RESUMEN

Quantitative MRI biomarkers are sought to replace painful and invasive sequential bone-marrow biopsies routinely used for myelofibrosis (MF) cancer monitoring and treatment assessment. Repeatability of MRI-based quantitative imaging biomarker (QIB) measurements was investigated for apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC), proton density fat fraction (PDFF), and magnetization transfer ratio (MTR) in a JAK2 V617F hematopoietic transplant model of MF. Repeatability coefficients (RCs) were determined for three defined tibia bone-marrow sections (2-9 mm; 10-12 mm; and 12.5-13.5 mm from the knee joint) across 15 diseased mice from 20-37 test-retest pairs. Scans were performed on consecutive days every two weeks for a period of 10 weeks starting 3-4 weeks after transplant. The mean RC with (95% confidence interval (CI)) for these sections, respectively, were for ADC: 0.037 (0.031, 0.050), 0.087 (0.069, 0.116), and 0.030 (0.022, 0.044) µm2/ms; for PDFF: 1.6 (1.3, 2.0), 15.5 (12.5, 20.2), and 25.5 (12.0, 33.0)%; and for MTR: 0.16 (0.14, 0.19), 0.11 (0.09, 0.15), and 0.09 (0.08, 0.15). Change-trend analysis of these QIBs identified a dynamic section within the mid-tibial bone marrow in which confident changes (exceeding RC) could be observed after a four-week interval between scans across all measured MRI-based QIBs. Our results demonstrate the capability to derive quantitative imaging metrics from mouse tibia bone marrow for monitoring significant longitudinal MF changes.

A murine model of myelofibrosis in tibia was used in a co-clinical trial to evaluate segmentation methods for application of image-based biomarkers to assess disease status. The dataset (32 mice with 157 3D MRI scans including 49 test-retest pairs scanned on consecutive days) was split into approximately 70% training, 10% validation, and 20% test subsets. Two expert annotators (EA1 and EA2) performed manual segmentations of the mouse tibia (EA1: all data; EA2: test and validation). Attention U-net (A-U-net) model performance was assessed for accuracy with respect to EA1 reference using the average Jaccard index (AJI), volume intersection ratio (AVI), volume error (AVE), and Hausdorff distance (AHD) for four training scenarios: full training, two half-splits, and a single-mouse subsets. The repeatability of computer versus expert segmentations for tibia volume of test-retest pairs was assessed by within-subject coefficient of variance (%wCV). A-U-net models trained on full and half-split training sets achieved similar average accuracy (with respect to EA1 annotations) for test set: AJI = 83-84%, AVI = 89-90%, AVE = 2-3%, and AHD = 0.5 mm-0.7 mm, exceeding EA2 accuracy: AJ = 81%, AVI = 83%, AVE = 14%, and AHD = 0.3 mm. The A-U-net model repeatability wCV [95% CI]: 3 [2, 5]% was notably better than that of expert annotators EA1: 5 [4, 9]% and EA2: 8 [6, 13]%. The developed deep learning model effectively automates murine bone marrow segmentation with accuracy comparable to human annotators and substantially improved repeatability.

Activation of compensatory signaling nodes in cancer often requires combination therapies that are frequently plagued by dose-limiting toxicities. Intestinal lymphatic drug absorption is seldom explored, although reduced toxicity and sustained drug levels would be anticipated to improve systemic bioavailability. A potent orally bioavailable multi-functional kinase inhibitor (LP-182) is described with intrinsic lymphatic partitioning for the combined targeting of phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathways without observable toxicity. We demonstrate selectivity and therapeutic efficacy through reduction of downstream kinase activation, amelioration of disease phenotypes, and improved survival in animal models of myelofibrosis. Our further characterization of synthetic and physiochemical properties for small molecule lymphatic uptake will support continued advancements in lymphatropic therapy for altering disease trajectories of a myriad of human disease indications.

Histopathology, the standard method to assess BM in hematologic malignancies such as myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs), suffers from notable limitations in both research and clinical settings. BM biopsies in patients fail to detect disease heterogeneity, may yield a nondiagnostic sample, and cannot be repeated frequently in clinical oncology. Endpoint histopathology precludes monitoring disease progression and response to therapy in the same mouse over time, missing likely variations among mice. To overcome these shortcomings, we used MRI to measure changes in cellularity, macromolecular constituents, and fat versus hematopoietic cells in BM using diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), magnetization transfer, and chemical shift-encoded fat imaging. Combining metrics from these imaging parameters revealed dynamic alterations in BM following myeloablative radiation and transplantation. In a mouse MPLW515L BM transplant model of MPN, MRI detected effects of a JAK2 inhibitor, ruxolitinib, within 5 days of initiating treatment and identified differing kinetics of treatment responses in subregions of the tibia. Histopathology validated the MRI results for BM composition and heterogeneity. Anatomic MRI scans also showed reductions in spleen volume during treatment. These findings establish an innovative, clinically translatable MRI approach to quantify spatial and temporal changes in BM in MPN.

In this study, we investigated the baseline characteristics and "trajectories" of clinical response in men and women after cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) implantation. Although women enjoy improved echocardiographic response after CRT compared with men, the kinetics of this response and its relation to functional performance and outcomes are less clear. We identified 592 patients who underwent CRT implantation at our center between 2004 and 2017 and were serially followed in a multidisciplinary clinic. Longitudinal linear mixed effects regression for cardiac response was specified, including interaction terms between time after CRT and sex , and Cox regression models were used to assess differences in all-cause mortality by gender after CRT. Women in our cohort were younger than men, had less frequent ischemic etiology of heart failure (24% vs 60% in men), a shorter QRS (151 vs 161 ms) and more frequent left bundle branch block (77% vs 52%) at baseline. Women had a greater improvement in left ventricular ejection fraction that was evident starting at approximately 1-month after CRT. We did not observe effect modification by gender in New York Heart Association class or 6-minute walk distance after CRT. Although women had improved mortality after CRT, after adjustment for potential confounders, gender was not associated with mortality after CRT. In conclusion, women were more likely to have CRT implantation for left bundle branch block and exhibited improved echocardiographic but not functional response within the first year after CRT. Clinical outcomes after CRT were not associated with gender in adjusted analysis.

BACKGROUND: Catheter ablation (CA) for atrial fibrillation (AF) is increasingly utilized in recent years, with promising results. We aimed to investigate the nationwide trends in utilization and procedural complications of CA for AF in patients with mechanical prosthetic valves (MPVs). METHODS AND RESULTS: We drew data from the US National Inpatient Sample (NIS) database to identify cases of AF ablations in patients with MPVs, between 2003 and 2015. Sociodemographic and clinical data were collected, and incidence of procedural complications, mortality, and length of stay were analyzed. We compared the outcomes to a propensity-matched cohort of patients without MPVs. The study included a weighted total of 1898 CA for AF cases in patients with MPVs. The median age of the study population was 67 (61-75) years and 53% were males. Despite the increasing age and significant uptrend in the prevalence of individual comorbidities and Deyo-Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) over the years, the risk of peri-procedural complications and mortality in the study group did not change between the early (2003-2008) and late (2009-2015) study years. The peri-procedural complication rate (8.4% vs. 10.4%, p = .33) and in-hospital mortality (0.2% vs. 0.2%, p = .9) did not differ significantly between patients with MPVs and 1901 matched patients without MPVs. Length of stay was higher among patients with prior MPVs compared to the controls (4.0 ± 0.2 vs. 3.3 ± 0.2 days, p = .011). CONCLUSION: This nationwide analysis shows that AF ablation in patients with mechanical valve prothesis bares a similar risk of periprocedural complications and mortality as in patients without prosthetic valves.

Established roles for PI3K and MAPK signaling pathways in tumorigenesis has prompted extensive research towards the discovery of small-molecule inhibitors as cancer therapeutics. However, significant compensatory regulation exists between these two signaling cascades, leading to redundancy among survival pathways. Consequently, initial clinical trials aimed at either PI3K or MEK inhibition alone have proven ineffective and highlight the need for development of targeted and innovative therapeutic combination strategies. We designed a series of PI3K inhibitor derivatives wherein a single morpholine group of the PI3K inhibitor ZSTK474 was substituted with a variety of 2-aminoethyl functional groups. Analogs with pendant hydroxyl or methoxy groups maintained low nanomolar inhibition towards PI3Kα, PI3Kγ, and PI3Kδ isoforms in contrast to those with pendant amino groups which were significantly less inhibitory. Synthesis of prototype PI3K/MEK bifunctional inhibitors (6r, 6s) was guided by the structure-activity data, where a MEK-targeting inhibitor was tethered directly via a short PEG linker to the triazine core of the PI3K inhibitor analogs. These compounds (6r, 6s) displayed nanomolar inhibition towards PI3Kα, δ, and MEK (IC50 ∼105-350 nM), and low micromolar inhibition for PI3Kß and PI3Kγ (IC50 ∼1.5-3.9 µM) in enzymatic inhibition assays. Cell viability assays demonstrated superior anti-proliferative activity for 6s over 6r in three tumor-derived cell lines (A375, D54, SET-2), which correlated with inhibition of downstream AKT and ERK1/2 phosphorylation. Compounds 6r and 6s also demonstrated in vivo tolerability with therapeutic efficacy through reduction of kinase activation and amelioration of disease phenotypes in the JAK2V617F mutant myelofibrosis mouse cancer model. Taken together, these results support further structure optimization of 6r and 6s as promising leads for combination therapy in human cancer as a new class of PI3K/MEK bifunctional inhibitors.

Recent characterization of spatiotemporal genomic architecture of IDH-wild-type multifocal glioblastomas (M-GBMs) suggests a clinically unobserved common-ancestor (CA) with a less aggressive phenotype, generating highly genetically divergent malignant gliomas/GBMs in distant brain regions. Using serial MRI/3D-reconstruction, whole-genome sequencing and spectral karyotyping-based single-cell phylogenetic tree building, we show two distinct types of tumor evolution in p53-mutant driven mouse models. Malignant gliomas/GBMs grow as a single mass (Type 1) and multifocal masses (Type 2), respectively, despite both exhibiting loss of Pten/chromosome 19 (chr19) and PI3K/Akt activation with sub-tetraploid/4N genomes. Analysis of early biopsied and multi-segment tumor tissues reveals no evidence of less proliferative diploid/2N lesions in Type 1 tumors. Strikingly, CA-derived relatively quiescent tumor precursors with ancestral diploid/2N genomes and normal Pten/chr19 are observed in the subventricular zone (SVZ), but are distantly segregated from multi focal Type 2 tumors. Importantly, PI3K/Akt inhibition by Rictor/mTORC2 deletion blocks distant dispersal, restricting glioma growth in the SVZ.

BACKGROUND: Millions of flying migrants encounter the Great Lakes and other large water bodies on long-distance flights each spring and fall, but quantitative data regarding how they traverse these obstacles are limited. Shorelines are known areas of migrant concentration due to the ecological barrier effect, but details on the magnitude of this concentration and the flight behaviors causing it are largely unknown and difficult to quantify. Mobile avian radar can provide a unique view of how birds and bats move across landscapes by tracking thousands of individual migrants moving through a sample volume that extends multiple kilometers in radius. RESULTS: During the spring of 2014 we used two avian radar units to compare migration patterns at shoreline (1.5 km from the shore) and inland (20 km from the shore) sites along the eastern shoreline of Lake Michigan in the north-central US. We found shoreline activity to be 27% greater than inland activity over all time periods, and 132% greater during the hour surrounding dawn. An analysis of flight directions found that migrants flew to the north and northwest during dusk and night, with many heading out over the lake, but shifted direction towards the east at dawn, as those flying over water reoriented towards land. This shift in direction, which was most intense at the shoreline, may contribute to the higher concentrations of migrants observed at shorelines in this study and others. CONCLUSIONS: These findings help confirm and quantify the phenomenon of nocturnal migrant reorientation at dawn, and also stress the functional importance of coastal regions for aerial migrants. The high use of coasts by migrants highlights the importance of conserving shoreline stopover habitat, which often competes with anthropogenic uses. We suggest using a high degree of caution when assessing potential impacts from development in these sensitive environments, and encourage protection of these high-use areas.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a common worldwide cancer that is rising rapidly in incidence. MRI is a powerful noninvasive imaging modality for HCC detection, but lack of specific contrast agents limits visualization of small tumors. EGFR is frequently overexpressed in HCC and is a promising target. Peptides have fast binding kinetics, short circulatory half-life, low imaging background, high vascular permeability, and enhanced tissue diffusion for deep tumor penetration. We demonstrate a peptide specific for EGFR labeled with an ultrasmall paramagnetic iron oxide (UPIO) nanoparticle with 3.5 nm dimensions to target HCC using T1-weighted MRI. We modified the hydrophobic core with oleic acid and capped with PEGylated phospholipids DSPE-PEG and DSPE-PEG-Mal. The EGFR peptide is attached via thioether-mediated conjugation of a GGGSC linker to the maleimide-terminated phospholipids. On in vivo MR images of HCC xenograft tumors, we observed peak nanoprobe uptake at 2 h post-injection followed by a rapid return to baseline by ∼24 h. We measured significantly greater MR signal in tumor with the targeted nanoprobe versus scrambled peptide, blocked peptide, and Gadoteridol. Segmented regions on MR images support rapid renal clearance. No significant difference in animal weight, necropsy, hematology, and chemistry was found between treatment and control groups at one month post-injection. Our nanoprobe based on an EGFR specific peptide labeled with UPIO designed for high stability and biocompatibility showed rapid tumor uptake and systemic clearance to demonstrate safety and promise for clinical translation to detect early HCC.

Responses to targeted therapies frequently are brief, with patients relapsing with drug-resistant tumors. For oncogenic MEK and BRAF inhibition, drug resistance commonly occurs through activation of PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling and immune checkpoint modulation, providing a robust molecular target for concomitant therapy. Here, we evaluated the efficacy of a bifunctional kinase inhibitor (ST-162) that concurrently targets MAPK and PI3K signaling pathways. Treatment with ST-162 produced regression of mutant KRAS- or BRAF-addicted xenograft models of colorectal cancer and melanoma and stasis of BRAF/PTEN-mutant melanomas. Combining ST-162 with immune checkpoint blockers further increased efficacy in a syngeneic KRAS-mutant colorectal cancer model. Nascent transcriptome analysis revealed a unique gene set regulated by ST-162 related to melanoma metastasis. Subsequent mouse studies revealed ST-162 was a potent inhibitor of melanoma metastasis to the liver. These findings highlight the significant potential of a single molecule with multikinase activity to achieve tumor control, overcome resistance, and prevent metastases through modulation of interconnected cell signaling pathways. Brain tumor biopsies that are routinely performed in clinical settings significantly aid in diagnosis and staging. The aim of this study is to develop and evaluate a methodological image-guided approach that would allow for routine sampling of glioma tissue from orthotopic mouse brain tumor models. A magnetic resonance imaging-guided biopsy method is presented to allow for spatially precise stereotaxic sampling of a murine glioma coupled with genome-scale technology to provide unbiased characterization of intra- and intertumoral clonal heterogeneity. Longitudinal and multiregional sampling of intracranial tumors allows for successful collection of tumor biopsy samples, thus allowing for a pathway-enrichment analysis and a transcriptional profiling of RNA sequencing data. Spatiotemporal gene expression pattern variations revealing genomic heterogeneity were found.

Aims: Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) device implantation has been shown to reduce morbidity and mortality in selected patients with heart failure. We sought to investigate the utilization and in-hospital complications of cardiac resynchronization therapy defibrillator (CRT-D) and pacemaker (CRT-P) implantations in the United States from 2003 to 2013. Methods and results: Patients receiving CRT-D or CRT-P were identified in the National Inpatient Sample database (NIS), using the International Classification of Diseases-Ninth Revision-Clinical Modification procedure codes. Annual implantation rates, patient demographics, co-morbidities, in-hospital complications, and length of stay were analysed. From 2003 to 2013, an estimated total of 439 010 (95% CI: 406 723-471 296) inpatient CRT implantations were performed in the U.S. The median age of patients was 72 and 71% were male. Overall, 6.1% had at least one complication. During the study period, comorbidity index and overall complication rate increased (P = 0.002 and P = 0.01, respectively). Mortality and length of stay showed no significant trend. Predictors of complications included: age 65 and older, female sex (OR: 1.19; 95% CI: 1.12-1.27), Deyo-Charlson Comorbidity Index, and elective admission (OR: 0.61; 95% CI: 0.57-0.66). Conclusion: From 2003 to 2013, the severity of comorbid conditions increased and a rising trend was observed in the rate of periprocedural complications among patients undergoing CRT in the United States. In-hospital mortality and length of stay showed no uniform trend.

Despite the use of ionizing radiation (IR) and temozolomide (TMZ), outcome for glioblastoma (GBM) patients remains dismal. Poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) is important in repair pathways for IR-induced DNA damage and TMZ-induced alkylation at N7-methylguanine and N3-methyldenine. However, optimized protocols for administration of PARP inhibitors have not been delineated. In this study, the PARP inhibitor ABT-888 was evaluated in combination with and compared to current standard-of-care in a genetically engineered mouse GBM model. Results demonstrated that concomitant TMZ/IR/ABT-888 with adjuvant TMZ/ABT-888 was more effective in inducing apoptosis and reducing proliferation with significant tumor growth delay and improved overall survival over concomitant TMZ/IR with adjuvant TMZ. Diffusion-weighted MRI, an early translatable response biomarker detected changes in tumors reflecting response at 1 day post TMZ/IR/ABT-888 treatment. This study provides strong scientific rationale for the development of an optimized dosing regimen for a PARP inhibitor with TMZ/IR for upfront treatment of GBM.

PURPOSE: To evaluate diffusion weighted MRI (DW-MR) as a response metric for assessment of neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) in patients with primary breast cancer using prospective multi-center trials which provided MR scans along with clinical outcome information. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 39 patients with locally advanced breast cancer accrued from three different prospective clinical trials underwent DW-MR examination prior to and at 3-7 days (Hull University), 8-11 days (University of Michigan) and 35 days (NeoCOMICE) post-treatment initiation. Thirteen patients, 12 of which participated in treatment response study, from UM underwent short interval (<1hr) MRI examinations, referred to as "test-retest" for examination of repeatability. To further evaluate stability in ADC measurements, a thermally controlled diffusion phantom was used to assess repeatability of diffusion measurements. MRI sequences included contrast-enhanced T1-weighted, when appropriate, and DW images acquired at b-values of 0 and 800 s/mm2. Histogram analysis and a voxel-based analytical technique, the Parametric Response Map (PRM), were used to derive diffusion response metrics for assessment of treatment response prediction. RESULTS: Mean tumor apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values generated from patient test-retest examinations were found to be very reproducible (|ΔADC|<0.1x10-3mm2/s). This data was used to calculate the 95% CI from the linear fit of tumor voxel ADC pairs of co-registered examinations (±0.45x10-3mm2/s) for PRM analysis of treatment response. Receiver operating characteristic analysis identified the PRM metric to be predictive of outcome at the 8-11 (AUC = 0.964, p = 0.01) and 35 day (AUC = 0.770, p = 0.05) time points (p<.05) while whole-tumor ADC changes where significant at the later 35 day time interval (AUC = 0.825, p = 0.02). CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates the feasibility of performing a prospective analysis of DW-MRI as a predictive biomarker of NAC in breast cancer patients. In addition, we provide experimental evidence supporting the use of sensitive analytical tools, such as PRM, for evaluating ADC measurements.

BACKGROUND: Radiation exposure in the electrophysiology lab is a major occupational hazard to the electrophysiologists. A catheter localization system (MediGuide Technology, St. Jude Medical Inc., St. Paul, MN, USA) allows the integration of electroanatomical mapping and x-ray imaging, and has been shown to be effective in reducing radiation exposure during several electrophysiological procedures. We intended to evaluate the feasibility of this catheter tracking system to guide transseptal (TS) access. METHODS: The feasibility of performing TS puncture with MediGuide (MDG) was assessed in a prospective observational study in 16 patients undergoing radiofrequency ablation for atrial fibrillation. These patients were compared to 16 matched patients undergoing similar procedures during the same time frame using conventional approach. There were no differences in mean age, gender distribution, and body mass index between the two groups. Total duration of fluoroscopic exposure during TS puncture was compared between the two groups. RESULTS: All patients underwent successful TS puncture. Fluoroscopy time for double TS puncture using the MDG system was significantly lower than the control group (0.48 ± 0.17 minutes vs. 5.9 ± 0.65 minutes; P < 0.0001). No major complications occurred during the procedures in either group. CONCLUSIONS: TS puncture can be successfully performed using MDG, and results in significant reduction in radiation exposure.

Genomic amplification of the gene encoding and phosphorylation of the protein FADD (Fas-associated death domain) is associated with poor clinical outcome in lung cancer and in head and neck cancer. Activating mutations in the guanosine triphosphatase RAS promotes cell proliferation in various cancers. Increased abundance of phosphorylated FADD in patient-derived tumor samples predicts poor clinical outcome. Using immunohistochemistry analysis and in vivo imaging of conditional mouse models of KRAS(G12D)-driven lung cancer, we found that the deletion of the gene encoding FADD suppressed tumor growth, reduced the proliferative index of cells, and decreased the activation of downstream effectors of the RAS-MAPK (mitogen-activated protein kinase) pathway that promote the cell cycle, including retinoblastoma (RB) and cyclin D1. In mouse embryonic fibroblasts, the induction of mitosis upon activation of KRAS required FADD and the phosphorylation of FADD by CK1α (casein kinase 1α). Deleting the gene encoding CK1α in KRAS mutant mice abrogated the phosphorylation of FADD and suppressed lung cancer development. Phosphorylated FADD was most abundant during the G2/M phase of the cell cycle, and mass spectrometry revealed that phosphorylated FADD interacted with kinases that mediate the G2/M transition, including PLK1 (Polo-like kinase 1), AURKA (Aurora kinase A), and BUB1 (budding uninhibited by benzimidazoles 1). This interaction was decreased in cells treated with a CKI-7, a CK1α inhibitor. Therefore, as the kinase that phosphorylates FADD downstream of RAS, CK1α may be a therapeutic target for KRAS-driven lung cancer.

BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been considered contraindicated in patients with cardiac pacemakers (PPMs). Recently, Medtronic (MDT) MRI SureScan PPM (Medtronic Inc., Minneapolis, MN, USA) and leads were introduced into clinical practice in the United States of America. OBJECTIVE: To compare MDT CapSureFix 5086 MRI SureScan lead-associated perforation and dislodgement rates with MDT non-MRI SureScan active fixation leads. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the records of all patients implanted with MDT CapSureFix 5086 MRI SureScan leads as well as all patients implanted with MDT 4076 and 5076 leads at our institution from April 2011 to April 2014. RESULTS: Four of 72 patients implanted with MDT CapSureFix 5086 MRI SureScan leads (5.5%) had evidence of lead perforation, necessitating pericardiocentesis in three cases and lead revision in one case. Three of the four perforations were delayed perforations, presenting more than 3 weeks postimplant. Two patients implanted with MDT CapSureFix 5086 MRI SureScan leads (2.8%) had lead dislodgement. Of 420 patients implanted with MDT non-MRI SureScan leads, there were two perforations (0.47%) and four dislodgements (0.9%). There were significantly increased lead perforations associated with MDT CapSureFix 5086 MRI SureScan leads (P = 0.005) and a nonsignificant trend toward increased dislodgements (P = 0.18) when compared with MDT non-MRI SureScan leads. CONCLUSION: In contradiction to prior studies, this retrospective study suggests an increased perforation rate with MDT CapSureFix 5086 MRI SureScan leads. Most perforations were delayed perforations, presenting more than 3 weeks postimplant. Higher volume prospective studies with longer follow-up are needed to confirm our findings.

Wind turbines are causing unprecedented numbers of bat fatalities. Many fatalities involve tree-roosting bats, but reasons for this higher susceptibility remain unknown. To better understand behaviors associated with risk, we monitored bats at three experimentally manipulated wind turbines in Indiana, United States, from July 29 to October 1, 2012, using thermal cameras and other methods. We observed bats on 993 occasions and saw many behaviors, including close approaches, flight loops and dives, hovering, and chases. Most bats altered course toward turbines during observation. Based on these new observations, we tested the hypotheses that wind speed and blade rotation speed influenced the way that bats interacted with turbines. We found that bats were detected more frequently at lower wind speeds and typically approached turbines on the leeward (downwind) side. The proportion of leeward approaches increased with wind speed when blades were prevented from turning, yet decreased when blades could turn. Bats were observed more frequently at turbines on moonlit nights. Taken together, these observations suggest that bats may orient toward turbines by sensing air currents and using vision, and that air turbulence caused by fast-moving blades creates conditions that are less attractive to bats passing in close proximity. Tree bats may respond to streams of air flowing downwind from trees at night while searching for roosts, conspecifics, and nocturnal insect prey that could accumulate in such flows. Fatalities of tree bats at turbines may be the consequence of behaviors that evolved to provide selective advantages when elicited by tall trees, but are now maladaptive when elicited by wind turbines.

The diagnosis of an old MI and the identification of myocardial scar via the electrocardiogram are difficult because there are no other specific signs for a non-Q-wave MI. In this article, we will review the fragmented QRS and its role in identifying myocardial scar and depolarization abnormalities in patients with coronary artery disease.
