RESUMEN

Arecoline (ACL), an active constituent derived from Areca catechu L., exerts various pharmacological effects and serves as a potential plant-based insecticide. However, the effects of ACL on Spodoptera litura, an important and widely distributed agricultural pest, remain unknown. This study aimed to elucidate the mechanism underlying ACL-induced toxicity and its inhibitory effects on larval growth and development through intestinal pathology observations, intestinal transcriptome sequencing, intestinal digestive enzyme activity analysis. The results indicated that ACL exposure leads to pathological alterations in the S. litura midgut. Furthermore, the detection of digestive enzyme activity revealed that ACL inhibits the activities of acetyl CoA carboxylase, lipase, α-amylase, and trypsin. Simultaneously, upregulation of superoxide dismutase activity and downregulation of malondialdehyde levels were observed after ACL exposure. Transcriptome analysis identified 1118 genes that were significantly differentially expressed in the midgut after ACL exposure, potentially related to ACL toxic effects. Notably, ACL treatment downregulated key enzymes involved in lipid metabolism, such as fatty acid binding protein 2-like, pancreatic triacylglycerol lipase-like, pancreatic lipid-related protein 2-like, and fatty acid binding protein 1-like. Taken together, these results suggest that ACL induces midgut damage and impedes larval growth by suppressing digestive enzyme activity in the intestine. These findings can aid in the development of environmentally friendly plant-derived insecticides, utilizing ACL to effectively combat S. litura proliferation.

BACKGROUND: The burden of common urologic diseases, including benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), urinary tract infections (UTI), urolithiasis, bladder cancer, kidney cancer, and prostate cancer, varies both geographically and within specific regions. It is essential to conduct a comprehensive and precise assessment of the global burden of urologic diseases. METHODS: We obtained data on incidence, prevalence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) for the aforementioned urologic diseases by age, sex, location, and year from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2021. We analyzed the burden associated with urologic diseases based on socio-demographic index (SDI) and attributable risk factors. The trends in burden over time were assessed using estimated annual percentage changes (EAPC) along with a 95% confidence interval (CI). RESULTS: In 2021, BPH and UTI were the leading causes of age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR) and age-standardized prevalence rate (ASPR), with rates of 5531.88 and 2782.59 per 100,000 persons, respectively. Prostate cancer was the leading cause of both age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR) and age-standardized DALYs rate (ASDR), with rates of 12.63 and 217.83 per 100,000 persons, respectively. From 1990 to 2021, there was an upward trend in ASIR, ASPR, ASMR, and ASDR for UTI, while urolithiasis showed a downward trend. The middle and low-middle SDI quintile levels exhibited higher incidence, prevalence, mortality, and DALYs related to UTI, urolithiasis, and BPH, while the high and high-middle SDI quintile levels showed higher rates for the three cancers. The burden of these six urologic diseases displayed diverse age and sex distribution patterns. In 2021, a high body mass index (BMI) contributed to 20.07% of kidney cancer deaths worldwide, while smoking accounted for 26.48% of bladder cancer deaths and 3.00% of prostate cancer deaths. CONCLUSIONS: The global burden of 6 urologic diseases presents a significant public health challenge. Urgent international collaboration is essential to advance the improvement of urologic disease management, encompassing the development of effective diagnostic screening tools and the implementation of high-quality prevention and treatment strategies.

Clinical trials and studies have implicated that E3 ubiquitin ligase BTBD3 (BTB Domain Containing 3) is a cancer-associated gene. However, the role and underlying mechanism of BTBD3 in colorectal cancer (CRC) is not fully understood yet. Herein, our study demonstrated that the mRNA and protein levels of BTBD3 were decreased in CRC tissues and associated with TYPO3 and Wnt/ß-catenin pathway. Our results showed that circRAE1 knockdown and TYRO3 overexpression activated Wnt/ß-catenin signaling pathway and the EMT process-associated markers, indicating that circRAE1/miR-388-3p/TYRO3 axis exacerbated tumorigenesis of CRC by activating Wnt/ß-catenin signaling pathway. In addition, overexpression of BTBD3 reduced CRC cell migration and invasion in vitro and inhibited tumor growth in vivo. Our data demonstrated that BTBD3 suppressed CRC progression through negative regulation of the circRAE1/miR-388-3p/TYRO3 axis and the Wnt/ß-catenin pathway. Our data further confirmed that BTBD3 bound and ubiquitinated ß-catenin and led to ß-catenin degradation, therefore blocked the Wnt/ß-catenin pathway and suppressed the CRC tumorigenesis. This study explored the mechanism of BTBD3 involved in CRC tumorigenesis and provided a new theoretical basis for the prevention and treatment of CRC.

The rapid urbanization has exacerbated the heat island effect, impacting city development and residents' health. This study, using Local Climate Zones (LCZ) as a framework, connects spatial structure, resource allocation, and thermal environment research. It investigates the spatiotemporal heterogeneity of the surface thermal environment and its driving forces, crucial for mitigating heat issues. Utilizing various data sources like remote sensing images, road network data, land use data, high-resolution street view data, and building data, the research employs the random forest algorithm to map LCZs in Chongqing's central urban area. Through mathematical statistics, equi-sector analysis, ring-layer analysis, and Pearson correlation analysis, the study examines seasonal variations in spatiotemporal heterogeneity and driving mechanisms of the surface thermal environment. Key findings include: (1) The central urban area of Chongqing is dominated by open-building and vegetation-type LCZs, with building-type LCZs showing a "clustered" distribution, while natural-type LCZs are mainly found in the suburbs with ribbon and block distribution in the urban area. (2) The surface thermal environment in the study area correlates strongly with surface cover and exhibits significant high temperature effects in summer. (3) The surface thermal conditions vary significantly among different LCZs and exhibit seasonal patterns, natural-type LCZs generally have lower temperatures compared to building-type LCZs.(4) The surface thermal characteristics within the same category of LCZs in different locations display distinct differences and seasonal variations. (5) The internal temperatures of LCZs are significantly linked to four surface attributes, each displaying seasonal fluctuations. Greenness, height, and wetness are inversely related to the surface thermal conditions, while brightness shows a positive correlation. Both seasonal variations and LCZ types differences have a noticeable influence on their respective driving mechanisms to some degree.

Objective: This study aimed to explore the short-term clinical efficacy of modified Kamikawa anastomosis and double tract anastomosis after laparoscopic proximal gastrectomy. Methods: A retrospective analysis was carried out by collecting the clinical and pathological data of 42 patients who underwent laparoscopic proximal gastrectomy after admission in our centre from May 2020 to October 2022. Among the 42 enrolled patients, 22 underwent modified Kamikawa anastomosis (modified Kamikawa group), and the other 20 underwent double tract anastomosis (double tract group). Outcome measures included intraoperative condition, postoperative recovery, postoperative quality of life, postoperative nutritional status and gastroesophageal reflux. The patients were followed up using outpatient examination and telephone interviews to identify their nutritional status, reflux esophagitis and anastomotic status. Results: (1) Intraoperative condition: Compared with the double tract group, the modified Kamikawa group had significantly prolonged time for operation and digestive tract reconstruction. However, no statistically significant difference in intraoperative blood loss was found between the two groups. (2) Postoperative recovery: Compared with the double tract group, the modified Kamikawa group had a significantly shorter time for the first postoperative intake of fluids, drainage tube placement and postoperative hospital stay. No statistically significant difference in the time to first postoperative anal exhaust and postoperative complications was found between the two groups. (3) Postoperative quality of life: Compared with the double tract group, the modified Kamikawa group showed better quality of life at 12 months after surgery. (4) Postoperative nutritional status and gastroesophageal reflux: No statistically significant difference in hemoglobin, total serum albumin, albumin, body mass index, MUST score, PG-SGA score, grading of reflux esophagitis using the Los Angeles classification system and GERD score was found between the two groups at 6 and 12 months after surgery. All patients did not experience anastomotic stenosis and tumour recurrence or metastasis. Conclusions: Modified Kamikawa anastomosis is a safe and feasible treatment in laparoscopic proximal gastrectomy, which can ensure good postoperative anti-reflux effect and nutritional status. It has the advantage of better postoperative recorvery and quality of life compared with double tract anastomosis.

OBJECTIVE: Clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) for Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine (TCM and WM) are important medical documents used to assist medical decision-making and are of great significance for standardizing clinical pathways. However, due to the constraints of text format, it is difficult for Integrated TCM and WM CPGs to play a real role in medical practice. In addition, how to standardize the structure and semantic relationships between Integrated TCM and WM CPG knowledge, and realize the construction of computable, sharable and reliable CPGs, remains an urgent issue to be addressed. Therefore, we are proposing an ontology of CPGs for Integrated TCM and WM. METHODS: We first initialized domain concepts and relationships to ensure the accuracy of the ontology knowledge structure. We then screened CPGs that meet the standards for Integrated TCM and WM, analyzed and classified the contents, and extracted the common structures. Based on the seven-step ontology construction method combined with inference-complement, referring to the representation methods and hierarchical relationships of terms and concepts in MeSH, ICD-10, SNOMED-CT, and other ontologies and terminology sets, we formed the concept structure and semantic relationship tables for the ontology. We also achieved the matching and mapping between the ontology and reference ontologies and term sets. Next, we defined the aspects and constraints of properties, selected multiple Integrated TCM and WM CPGs as instances to populate, and used ontology reasoning tools and formulated defined inference rules to reason and extend the ontology. Finally, we evaluated the performance of the ontology. RESULTS: The content of the Integrated TCM and WM CPGs is divided into nine parts: basic information, background, development method, clinical question, recommendation, evidence, conclusion, result, and reason for recommendations. The Integrated TCM and WM CPG ontology has 152 classes and defines 90 object properties and 114 data properties, with a maximum classification depth of 4 layers. The terms of disease, drug and examination item names in the ontology have been standardized. CONCLUSIONS: This study proposes an Integrated TCM and WM CPG ontology. The ontology adopts a modular design, which has both sharing and scaling ability, and can express rich guideline knowledge. It provides important support for the semantic processing and computational application of guideline documents.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of adenocarcinoma of the esophagogastric junction (AEJ) is increasing, and with poor prognosis. Lymph node status (LNs) is particularly important for planning treatment and evaluating the prognosis of patients with AEJ. However, the use of radiomic based on enhanced computed tomography (CT) to predict the preoperative lymph node metastasis (PLNM) status of the AEJ has yet to be reported. PURPOSE: We sought to investigate the value of radiomic features based on enhanced CT in the accurate prediction of PLNM in patients with AEJ. METHODS: Clinical features and enhanced CT data of 235 patients with AEJ from October 2017 to May 2023 were retrospectively analyzed. The data were randomly assigned to the training cohort (n = 164) or the external testing cohort (n = 71) at a ratio of 7:3. A CT-report model, clinical model, radiomic model, and radiomic-clinical combined model were developed to predict PLNM in patients with AEJ. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression were used to screen for independent clinical risk factors. Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression was used to select the radiomic features. Finally, a nomogram for the preoperative prediction of PLNM in AEJ was constructed by combining Radiomics-score and clinical risk factors. The models were evaluated by area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC-ROC), calibration curve, and decision curve analyses. RESULTS: A total of 181 patients (181/235, 77.02%) had LNM. In the testing cohort, the AUC of the radiomic-clinical model was 0.863 [95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.738-0.957], and the radiomic model (0.816; 95% CI = 0.681-0.929), clinical model (0.792; 95% CI = 0.677-0.888), and CT-report model (0.755; 95% CI = 0.647-0.840). CONCLUSION: The radiomic-clinical model is a feasible method for predicting PLNM in patients with AEJ, helping to guide clinical decision-making and personalized treatment planning.

By examining and analyzing bran-free fermented Baijiu (BFB) with varying storage periods (0-20 years), it was observed that the overall concentration of volatile compounds initially increases and subsequently decreases over time. Furthermore, BFB exhibited more kinds of long chain esters, higher concentration of acetals, and reduced furfural content. The process of cellaring can enhance the aged, sweet, and fruity aroma of BFB. 16 flavor compounds, including 1,1-diethoxyethane, ethyl dodecanoate, and ethyl hexadecanoate, can be used as markers for vintage BFB, and electronic sensory technology was capable of discerning BFB in different years. The results of redundancy analysis (RDA) showed a positive correlation between metals and aldehydes, esters, and ketones, while indicating a negative correlation with acids and alcohols. Al, Fe, and Ca underwent the most significant changes during storage period, and they were positively correlated with differential substances, such as benzaldehyde, vanillin, ethyl isovalerate, and ethyl palmitate (P < 0.01).

BACKGROUND: Sarcomatoid carcinoma (SCA) of the jejunum is a rare and aggressive neoplasm affecting the smooth muscle cells of the jejunum. This study presents a recent case of jejunal SCA, detailing its diagnosis and treatment, thereby providing a reference for clinical practice. CASE SUMMARY: A 65-year-old male presented to Yichang Central People's Hospital with a chief complaint of hemorrhoids. A computed tomography (CT) scan incidentally revealed multiple abnormal signals in the liver. Subsequent positron emission tomography/CT at Wuhan Union Hospital indicated malignant tumor progression, with a primary duodenal tumor and multiple metastases in the upper left abdomen. Intraoperatively, a large tumor was identified on the omentum. Histopathological and immunohistochemical analyses of the resected specimen confirmed the diagnosis of jejunal SCA. The patient received a combination therapy of sintilimab, nanoparticle albumin-bound paclitaxel, and anlotinib. Follow-up imaging demonstrated significant reduction of hepatic and peritoneal lesions. The patient has remained stable for over one year postoperatively. CONCLUSION: This case suggests that chemotherapy, immunotherapy, plus targeted therapy may represent an optimal treatment for intestinal SCA, meriting further investigation.

Designing and synthesizing multifunctional hybrid copper halides with near ultraviolet (NUV) light-excited high-energy emission (<500 nm) remains challenging. Here, a pair of broadband-excited high-energy emitting isomers, namely, α-/ß-(MePh3P)2CuI3 (MePh3P=methyltriphenylphosphonium), were synthesized. α-(MePh3P)2CuI3 with blue emission peaking at 475 nm is firstly discovered wherein its structure contains regular [CuI3]2- triangles and crystallizes in centrosymmetric space group P21/c. While ß-(MePh3P)2CuI3 featuring distorted [CuI3]2- planar triangles shows inversion symmetry breaking and crystallizes in the noncentrosymmetric space group P21, which exhibits cyan emission peaking at 495 nm with prominent near-unity photoluminescence quantum yield and the excitation band ranging from 200 to 450 nm. Intriguingly, ß-(MePh3P)2CuI3 exhibits phase-matchable second-harmonic generation response of 0.54×KDP and a suitable birefringence of 0.06@1064 nm. Furthermore, ß-(MePh3P)2CuI3 also can be excited by X-ray radioluminescence with a high scintillation light yield of 16193 photon/MeV and an ultra-low detection limit of 47.97 nGy/s, which is only 0.87 % of the standard medical diagnosis (5.5 µGy/s). This work not only promotes the development of solid-state lighting, laser frequency conversion and X-ray imaging, but also provides a reference for constructing multifunctional hybrid metal halides.

The relationship among polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), endometrial cancer (EC), and glycometabolism remains unclear. We explored shared genes between PCOS and EC, using bioinformatics to unveil their pathogenic connection and influence on EC prognosis. Gene Expression Omnibus datasets GSE226146 (PCOS) and GSE196033 (EC) were used. A protein-protein interaction (PPI) network was constructed to identify the central genes. Candidate markers were screened using dataset GSE54250. Differences in marker expression were confirmed in mouse PCOS and human EC tissues using RT-PCR and immunohistochemistry. The effect of PGD on EC proliferation and migration was explored using Ki-67 and Transwell assays. PGD's impact on the glycometabolic pathway within carbon metabolism was assessed by quantifying glucose content and lactic acid production. R software identified 31 common genes in GSE226146 and GSE196033. Gene Ontology functional classification revealed enrichment in the "purine nucleoside triphosphate metabolism process," with key Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathways related to "carbon metabolism." The PPI network identified 15 hub genes. HK2, NDUFS8, PHGDH, PGD, and SMAD3 were confirmed as candidate markers. The RT-PCR analysis validated distinct HK2 and PGD expression patterns in mouse PCOS ovarian tissue and human EC tissue, as well as in normal and EC cells. Transfection experiments with Ishikawa cells further confirmed PGD's influence on cell proliferation and migration. Suppression of PGD expression impeded glycometabolism within the carbon metabolism of EC cells, suggesting PGD as a significant PCOS risk factor impacting EC proliferation and migration through modulation of single carbon metabolism. These findings highlight PGD's pivotal role in EC onset and prognosis.

To investigate the short-term clinical efficacy of laparoscopic proximal gastrectomy with modified Kamikawa anastomosis and laparoscopic total gastrectomy with Roux-en-Y anastomosis. Retrospective cohort study was conducted. The clinicopathological data of 268 patients who underwent laparoscopic proximal gastrectomy for adenocarcinoma of esophagogastric junction and upper gastric adenocarcinoma from January 2016 to October 2022 were collected. Among 268 patients, 26 underwent laparoscopic proximal gastrectomy with modified Kamikawa anastomosis were assigned to Kamikawa group and 242 underwent laparoscopic total gastrectomy with Roux-en-Y anastomosis were assigned to Roux-en-Y group. The sex, age, BMI, preoperative albumin, maximum tumor diameter, histological grade, and pathological stage of patients in the Kamikawa group and the Roux-en-Y group were subjected to 1:1 propensity score matching. After matching, 16 patients in Kamikawa group and Roux-en-Y group were respectively included in this study. Outcome measures: (1) Intraoperative condition. (2) Postoperative recovery. (3) Follow-up information. The patients' nutritional status, reflux esophagitis and anastomotic stoma were investigated by outpatient and telephone follow-up. Nutritional status assessment comprising body mass index and Nutritional Risk Screening 2002 score. (1) Intraoperative condition. All patients successfully underwent laparoscopic proximal gastrectomy and total gastrectomy. Compared with Roux-en-Y group, the digestive tract reconstruction time in Kamikawa group was longer 93.0(74.0-111.0)min vs. 39.7(35.1-46.2)min, t = -2.001, P = 0.055., and the difference was statistically significant (P < 0.05). There was no statistically significant difference in total operation time and intraoperative blood loss (P > 0.05). (2) Postoperative recovery. There was no statistically significant difference between Kamikawa group and Roux-en-Y group in first anal exhaust time, first postoperative liquid intake time, postoperative hospitalization time, and postoperative complications (P > 0.05). (3) Follow-up information. All patients were followed up. BMI and NRS 2002 scores in Kamikawa group were better than those in Roux-en-Y group at 6 and 12 months after surgery 22.9 ± 3.0 kg/m2 vs. 20.8 ± 2.2 kg/m2, t = 2.165, P = 0.038; 23.1 ± 3.0 kg/m2 vs. 20.3 ± 2.2 kg/m2, t = 3.022, P = 0.005 and 2 (1-2) vs. 2 (1-3), Z = -2.585, P = 0.010; 2 (1-2) vs. 2 (1-3), Z = -2.273, P = 0.023., the difference was statistically significant (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference in GERD scale score and occurrence of ≥ Grade B reflux esophagitis at 6 and 12 months after surgery between Kamikawa group and Roux-en-Y group (P > 0.05). Anastomotic stenosis was not found in all patients by postoperative upper gastrointestinal angiography. Laparoscopic proximal gastrectomy with modified Kamikawa anastomosis is safe and feasible for the treatment of esophagogastric junction and upper gastric adenocarcinoma, and can achieve good anti-reflux effect. Besides, compared with traditional laparoscopic total gastrectomy, its postoperative nutritional status is better.

Objective: Chronological age (CAge), biological age (BAge), and accelerated age (AAge) are all important for aging-related diseases. CAge is a known risk factor for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH); However, the evidence of association of BAge and AAge with BPH is limited. This study aimed to evaluate the association of CAge, Bage, and AAge with BPH in a large prospective cohort. Method: A total of 135,933 males without BPH at enrolment were extracted from the UK biobank. We calculated three BAge measures (Klemera-Doubal method, KDM; PhenoAge; homeostatic dysregulation, HD) based on 16 biomarkers. Additionally, we calculated KDM-BAge and PhenoAge-BAge measures based on the Levine method. The KDM-AAge and PhenoAge-AAge were assessed by the difference between CAge and BAge and were standardized (mean = 0 and standard deviation [SD] = 1). Cox proportional hazard models were applied to assess the associations of CAge, Bage, and AAge with incident BPH risk. Results: During a median follow-up of 13.150 years, 11,811 (8.690%) incident BPH were identified. Advanced CAge and BAge measures were associated with an increased risk of BPH, showing threshold effects at a later age (all P for nonlinearity <0.001). Nonlinear relationships between AAge measures and risk of BPH were also found for KDM-AAge (P = 0.041) and PhenoAge-AAge (P = 0.020). Compared to the balance comparison group (-1 SD < AAge < 1 SD), the accelerated aging group (AAge > 2 SD) had a significantly elevated BPH risk with hazard ratio (HR) of 1.115 (95% CI, 1.000-1.223) for KDM-AAge and 1.180 (95% CI, 1.068-1.303) for PhenoAge-AAge, respectively. For PhenoAge-AAge, subgroup analysis of the accelerated aging group showed an increased HR of 1.904 (95% CI, 1.374-2.639) in males with CAge <50 years and 1.233 (95% CI, 1.088-1.397) in those having testosterone levels <12 nmol/L. Moreover, AAge-associated risk of BPH was independent of and additive to genetic risk. Conclusions: Biological aging is an independent and modifiable risk factor for BPH. We suggest performing active health interventions to slow biological aging, which will help mitigate the progression of prostate aging and further reduce the burden of BPH.

Mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) is commonly utilized for the treatment of neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD). However, a subset of patients experience significant gastrointestinal (GI) adverse effects following MMF administration. The present study aims to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of MMF-induced GI toxicity in NMOSD. Utilizing a vancomycin-treated mouse model, we compiled a comprehensive data set to investigate the microbiome and metabolome in the GI tract to elucidate the mechanisms of MMF GI toxicity. Furthermore, we enrolled 17 female NMOSD patients receiving MMF, who were stratified into non-diarrhea NMOSD and diarrhea NMOSD (DNM) groups, in addition to 12 healthy controls. The gut microbiota of stool samples was analyzed using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Vancomycin administration prevented weight loss and tissue injury caused by MMF, affecting colon metabolomes and microbiomes. Bacterial ß-glucuronidase from Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes was linked to intestinal tissue damage. The DNM group showed higher alpha diversity and increased levels of Firmicutes and Proteobacteria. The ß-glucuronidase produced by Firmicutes may be important in causing gastrointestinal side effects from MMF in NMOSD treatment, providing useful information for future research on MMF. IMPORTANCE: Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) patients frequently endure severe consequences like paralysis and blindness. Mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) effectively addresses these issues, but its usage is hindered by gastrointestinal (GI) complications. Through uncovering the intricate interplay among MMF, gut microbiota, and metabolic pathways, this study identifies specific gut bacteria responsible for metabolizing MMF into a potentially harmful form, thus contributing to GI side effects. These findings not only deepen our comprehension of MMF toxicity but also propose potential strategies, such as inhibiting these bacteria, to mitigate these adverse effects. This insight holds broader implications for minimizing complications in NMOSD patients undergoing MMF therapy.

Objective: Various stem cell-loaded scaffolds have demonstrated promising endometrial regeneration and fertility restoration. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of stem cell-loaded scaffolds in treating uterine injury in animal models. Methods: The PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science databases were systematically searched. Data were extracted and analyzed using Review Manager version 5.4. Improvements in endometrial thickness, endometrial glands, fibrotic area, and number of gestational sacs/implanted embryos were compared after transplantation in the stem cell-loaded scaffolds and scaffold-only group. The standardized mean difference (SMD) and confidence interval (CI) were calculated using forest plots. Results: Thirteen studies qualified for meta-analysis. Overall, compared to the scaffold groups, stem cell-loaded scaffolds significantly increased endometrial thickness (SMD = 1.99, 95% CI: 1.54 to 2.44, P < 0.00001; I² = 16%) and the number of endometrial glands (SMD = 1.93, 95% CI: 1.45 to 2.41, P < 0.00001; I² = 0). Moreover, stem cell-loaded scaffolds present a prominent effect on improving fibrosis area (SMD = -2.50, 95% CI: -3.07 to -1.93, P < 0.00001; I² = 36%) and fertility (SMD = 3.34, 95% CI: 1.58 to 5.09, P = 0.0002; I² = 83%). Significant heterogeneity among studies was observed, and further subgroup and sensitivity analyses identified the source of heterogeneity. Moreover, stem cell-loaded scaffolds exhibited lower inflammation levels and higher angiogenesis, and cell proliferation after transplantation. Conclusion: The evidence indicates that stem cell-loaded scaffolds were more effective in promoting endometrial repair and restoring fertility than the scaffold-only groups. The limitations of the small sample sizes should be considered when interpreting the results. Thus, larger animal studies and clinical trials are needed for further investigation. BACKGROUND: Simulation is widely utilized in medical education. Exploring the effectiveness of high-fidelity simulation of clinical research within medical education may inform its integration into clinical research training curricula, finally cultivating physician-scientist development. METHODS: Standard teaching scripts for both clinical trial and cross-sectional study simulation were designed. We recruited undergraduates majoring in clinical medicine at 3th grade into a pre-post intervention study. Additionally, a cross-sectional survey randomly selected medical undergraduates at 4th or 5th grade, medical students in master and doctor degree as external controls. Self-assessment scores of knowledge and practice were collected using a 5-point Likert scale. Changes in scores were tested by Wilcoxon signed-rank test and group comparisons were conducted by Dunn's tests with multiple corrections. Multivariable quantile regressions were used to explore factors influencing the changes from baseline. RESULTS: Seventy-eight undergraduates involved the clinical trial simulation and reported improvement of 1.60 (95% CI, 1.48, 1.80, P < 0.001) in knowledge and 1.82 (95% CI, 1.64, 2.00, P < 0.001) in practice score. 83 undergraduates involved in the observational study simulation and reported improvement of 0.96 (95% CI, 0.79, 1.18, P < 0.001) in knowledge and 1.00 (95% CI, 0.79, 1.21, P < 0.001) in practice. All post-intervention scores were significantly higher than those of the three external control groups, P < 0.001. Higher agreement on the importance of clinical research were correlated with greater improvements in scores. Undergraduates in pre-post study showed high confidence in doing a future clinical research. CONCLUSION: Our study provides evidence supporting the integration of simulation into clinical research curriculum for medical students. The importance of clinical research can be emphasized during training to enhance learning effect.

Viruses are obligate intracellular parasites that rely on cell surface receptor molecules to complete the first step of invading host cells. The experimental method for virus receptor screening is time-consuming, and receptor molecules have been identified for less than half of known viruses. This study collected known human viruses and their receptor molecules. Through bioinformatics analysis, common characteristics of virus receptor molecules (including sequence, expression, mutation, etc.) were obtained to study why these membrane proteins are more likely to become virus receptors. An in-depth analysis of the cataloged virus receptors revealed several noteworthy findings. Compared to other membrane proteins, human virus receptors generally exhibited higher expression levels and lower sequence conservation. These receptors were found in multiple tissues, with certain tissues and cell types displaying significantly higher expression levels. While most receptor molecules showed noticeable age-related variations in expression across different tissues, only a limited number of them exhibited gender-related differences in specific tissues. Interestingly, in contrast to normal tissues, virus receptors showed significant dysregulation in various types of tumors, particularly those associated with dsRNA and retrovirus receptors. Finally, GateView, a multi-omics platform, was established to analyze the gene features of virus receptors in human normal tissues and tumors. Serving as a valuable resource, it enables the exploration of common patterns among virus receptors and the investigation of virus tropism across different tissues, population preferences, virus pathogenicity, and oncolytic virus mechanisms.

Plasma ice shape regulation is a technology which uses plasma actuator to regulate the continuous ice into safer intermittent ice by its significant thermal effect with limited energy. Whether plasma ice shape regulation could reduce flight risk is a new problem under the wing with continuous ice. The 3D printed ice shapes were arranged on the leading edge of the wing based on NACA0012 airfoil, aiming to simulate the configuration after ice shape regulation. And the aerodynamic parameters were obtained by wind tunnel experiments. The experimental results showed that the ratio of signal regulation ice width d to chord length of the wing b A determined the aerodynamic characteristics, and the aerodynamic characteristics changed better compared with configuration of the continuous ice. However, the flight risk of the wing under given regulation ratio is unknown. Based on the straight and swept wing after regulating, the flight safety boundaries were simulated by the reachable set method. Further, a method of quantitative assessment of flight risk is proposed. Quantitative values of risk were calculated. The results show that the flight risk all decreases from level 2 to level 4 compared with configuration of the continuous ice when d / b A equals 0.15 under conditions of swept and straight wing.

Harnessing solar energy to produce hydrogen through semiconductor-mediated photocatalytic water splitting is a promising avenue to address the challenges of energy scarcity and environmental degradation. Ever since Fujishima and Honda's groundbreaking work in photocatalytic water splitting, titanium dioxide (TiO2) has garnered significant interest as a semiconductor photocatalyst, prized for its non-toxicity, affordability, superior photocatalytic activity, and robust chemical stability. Nonetheless, the efficacy of solar energy conversion is hampered by TiO2's wide bandgap and the swift recombination of photogenerated carriers. In pursuit of enhancing TiO2's photocatalytic prowess, a panoply of modification techniques has been explored over recent years. This work provides an extensive review of the strategies employed to augment TiO2's performance in photocatalytic hydrogen production, with a special emphasis on foreign dopant incorporation. Firstly, we delve into metal doping as a key tactic to boost TiO2's capacity for efficient hydrogen generation via water splitting. We elaborate on the premise that metal doping introduces discrete energy states within TiO2's bandgap, thereby elevating its visible light photocatalytic activity. Following that, we evaluate the role of metal nanoparticles in modifying TiO2, hailed as one of the most effective strategies. Metal nanoparticles, serving as both photosensitizers and co-catalysts, display a pronounced affinity for visible light absorption and enhance the segregation and conveyance of photogenerated charge carriers, leading to remarkable photocatalytic outcomes. Furthermore, we consolidate perspectives on the nonmetal doping of TiO2, which tailors the material to harness visible light more efficiently and bolsters the separation and transfer of photogenerated carriers. The incorporation of various anions is summarized for their potential to propel TiO2's photocatalytic capabilities. This review aspires to compile contemporary insights on ion-doped TiO2, propelling the efficacy of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution and anticipating forthcoming advancements. Our work aims to furnish an informative scaffold for crafting advanced TiO2-based photocatalysts tailored for water-splitting applications.

BACKGROUND: The study on predicting the differentiation grade of colorectal cancer (CRC) based on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has not been reported yet. Developing a non-invasive model to predict the differentiation grade of CRC is of great value. AIM: To develop and validate machine learning-based models for predicting the differentiation grade of CRC based on T2-weighted images (T2WI). METHODS: We retrospectively collected the preoperative imaging and clinical data of 315 patients with CRC who underwent surgery from March 2018 to July 2023. Patients were randomly assigned to a training cohort (n = 220) or a validation cohort (n = 95) at a 7:3 ratio. Lesions were delineated layer by layer on high-resolution T2WI. Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression was applied to screen for radiomic features. Radiomics and clinical models were constructed using the multilayer perceptron (MLP) algorithm. These radiomic features and clinically relevant variables (selected based on a significance level of P < 0.05 in the training set) were used to construct radiomics-clinical models. The performance of the three models (clinical, radiomic, and radiomic-clinical model) were evaluated using the area under the curve (AUC), calibration curve and decision curve analysis (DCA). RESULTS: After feature selection, eight radiomic features were retained from the initial 1781 features to construct the radiomic model. Eight different classifiers, including logistic regression, support vector machine, k-nearest neighbours, random forest, extreme trees, extreme gradient boosting, light gradient boosting machine, and MLP, were used to construct the model, with MLP demonstrating the best diagnostic performance. The AUC of the radiomic-clinical model was 0.862 (95%CI: 0.796-0.927) in the training cohort and 0.761 (95%CI: 0.635-0.887) in the validation cohort. The AUC for the radiomic model was 0.796 (95%CI: 0.723-0.869) in the training cohort and 0.735 (95%CI: 0.604-0.866) in the validation cohort. The clinical model achieved an AUC of 0.751 (95%CI: 0.661-0.842) in the training cohort and 0.676 (95%CI: 0.525-0.827) in the validation cohort. All three models demonstrated good accuracy. In the training cohort, the AUC of the radiomic-clinical model was significantly greater than that of the clinical model (P = 0.005) and the radiomic model (P = 0.016). DCA confirmed the clinical practicality of incorporating radiomic features into the diagnostic process. CONCLUSION: In this study, we successfully developed and validated a T2WI-based machine learning model as an auxiliary tool for the preoperative differentiation between well/moderately and poorly differentiated CRC. This novel approach may assist clinicians in personalizing treatment strategies for patients and improving treatment efficacy.
