RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Demyelination is a key factor in axonal degeneration and neural loss, leading to disability in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. Transforming growth factor beta activated kinase 1 (TAK1) is a critical molecule involved in immune and inflammatory signaling pathways. Knockout of microglia TAK1 can inhibit autoimmune inflammation of the brain and spinal cord and improve the outcome of MS. However, it is unclear whether inhibiting TAK1 can alleviate demyelination. METHODS: Eight-week-old male c57bl/6j mice were randomly divided into five groups: (a) the control group, (b) the group treated with cuprizone (CPZ) only, (c) the group treated with 5Z-7-Oxozaenol (OZ) only, and (d) the group treated with both cuprizone and 15 µg/30 µg OZ. Demyelination in the mice of this study was induced by administration of CPZ (ig) at a daily dose of 400 mg/kg for consecutive 5 weeks. OZ was intraperitoneally administered at mentioned doses twice a week, starting from week 3 after beginning cuprizone treatment. Histology, rotarod test, grasping test, pole test, Western blot, RT-PCR, and ELISA were used to evaluate corpus callosum demyelination, behavioral impairment, oligodendrocyte differentiation, TAK1 signaling pathway expression, microglia, and related cytokines. RESULTS: Our results demonstrated that OZ protected against myelin loss and behavior impairment caused by CPZ. Additionally, OZ rescued the loss of oligodendrocytes in CPZ-induced mice. OZ inhibited the activation of JNK, p65, and p38 pathways, transformed M1 polarized microglia into M2 phenotype, and increased brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) expression to attenuate demyelination in CPZ-treated mice. Furthermore, OZ reduced the expression of proinflammatory cytokines and increases anti-inflammatory cytokines in CPZ-treated mice. CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that inhibiting TAK1 may be an effective approach for treating demyelinating diseases.

Both Chamaecyparis formosensis and C. obtusa var. formosana are representative cypresses of high economic value in Taiwan, the southernmost subtropical region where cypresses are found. Both species show differences of their habitats. To find out the effects of environmental factors on the CO2 assimilation rate and the biogenic volatile organic compound (BVOC) emission of both species, saplings from both species were grown under different light intensity and temperature regimes. The results indicated that the net CO2 assimilation rates and total BVOC emission rates of both species increased with increasing light intensity. C. formosensis showed a higher magnitude of change, but C. obtusa var. formosana had considerably increased sesquiterpenoid and diterpenoid emission in BVOC under high light intensity. Both species grown under higher temperatures had significantly lower BVOC emission rates. Proteomic analyses revealed that compared to C. formosensis saplings, C. obtusa var. formosana saplings had less differentially expressed proteins in terms of protein species and fold changes in response to the growth conditions. These proteins participated mainly in photosynthesis, carbon metabolism, amino acid and protein processing, signal transduction, and stress mechanisms. These proteins might be the major regulatory factors affecting BVOC emission of these two species under different environments.

Many studies have shown that solving addition and subtraction problems can induce overt shifts of spatial attention. In particular, right-side targets are detected faster than left-side targets when preceded by an addition operation, while left-side targets are detected faster than right-side targets when preceded by a subtraction operation. However, the interaction between space and arithmetic in multiplication or division is hardly studied and remains controversial. In order to make a strong case for the interaction between space and mental arithmetic, we attempted to replicate the spatial-arithmetic association in addition and subtraction (Experiment 1), and at the same time investigated whether shift of spatial attention would also be induced by multiplication or division operations (Experiment 2). We found that solving addition problems facilitated the detection of right-side targets, whereas left-side targets were detected faster after solving subtraction problems. However, no interaction between space and arithmetic operation was observed in multiplication or division. The implication of these findings is discussed.

BACKGROUND: Hairy beggar-ticks (Bidens pilosa L.) is a common invasive plant in tropical and subtropical regions. The Flora of Taiwan listed three varieties of B. pilosa in Taiwan, var. minor, var. pilosa and var. radiata. Among the three varieties, var. radiata was the most recently, in 1970s, introduced into Taiwan. However, after its introduction into Taiwan, var. radiata has become dominant over the other two varieties and is considered a serious invasive plant in lowland of Taiwan. Our previous study showed that var. radiata is self-incompatible and the other two varieties are self-fertile. Could it be possible that different chromosome numbers contribute to the different breeding systems of these three varieties? In addition, the heterogeneities of traits of var. radiata were found higher than those of var. minor and var. pilosa. Is the phenomenon resulting from the hybridization between var. radiata with other varieties? We counted chromosome numbers of populations of these three varieties distributed in Taiwan and conducted hand pollination treatment between var. radiata (as pollen receiver) and var. minor or var. pilosa (as pollen donor) to provide answer for the aforementioned questions. RESULTS: No difference was found in chromosome numbers among populations of the same variety. Forty-eight chromosomes (2n = 48) were counted for var. radiata while 72 (2n = 72) chromosomes for var. minor and var. pilosa. Therefore, var. radiata is tetraploid and var. minor and var. pilosa are hexaploid. No successful hybridization was found between var. radiata and var. minor or between var. radiata and var. pilosa. CONCLUSIONS: This study provided the evidence that the invasive plant (B. pilosa var. radiata) has different chromosome numbers from the other two varieties and is unlikely to hybridize with the other two varieties.
