Salmo caspius Kessler, 1877 is one of the most commercially important species of Salmonidae in the southern basin of the Caspian Sea. The occurrence of its wild populations has undergone sever reduction during the last years. In spite of the yearly restocking activity, still no progress on the recovery of its wild population has been observed. Hence, the present study was done in order to assess the efficiency of the current restocking activity in the southern Caspian basin in term of genetic diversity. DNA extracts of 32 S. caspius from four different groups were screened using 62621 genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP). The overal genetic diversity and Fst values were 0.18 and 0.08, respectively. Considering the observed admixture pattern and the positive values for inbreeding coeficient it seems that S. caspius suffers from its small effective population size. In order to obtain the maximum performance, alonside with expanding the size of brood stocks, rehabilitation of the habitats and spawning rivers of this nationally endangered species is of great importance.

Morphology and feature selection are key approaches to address several issues in fisheries science and stock management, such as the hypothesis of admixture of Caspian common carp (Cyprinus carpio) and farmed carp stocks in Iran. The present study was performed to investigate the population classification of common carp in the southern Caspian basin using data mining algorithms to find the most important characteristic(s) differing between Iranian and farmed common carp. A total of 74 individuals were collected from three locations within the southern Caspian basin and from one farm between November 2015 and April 2016. A dataset of 26 traditional morphometric (TMM) attributes and a dataset of 14 geometric landmark points were constructed and then subjected to various machine learning methods. In general, the machine learning methods had a higher prediction rate with TMM datasets. The highest decision tree accuracy of 77% was obtained by rule and decision tree parallel algorithms, and "head height on eye area" was selected as the best marker to distinguish between wild and farmed common carp. Various machine learning algorithms were evaluated, and we found that the linear discriminant was the best method, with 81.1% accuracy. The results obtained from this novel approach indicate that Darwin's domestication syndrome is observed in common carp. Moreover, they pave the way for automated detection of farmed fish, which will be most beneficial to detect escapees and improve restocking programs.

In industrial animal production, breeding strategies are essential to produce offspring of better quality and vitality. It is also known that host microbiome has a bearing on its health. Here, we report for the first time the influence of crossbreeding strategy, inbreeding or outbreeding, on the buccal and intestinal bacterial communities in female Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Crossbreeding was performed within a family and between different fish families to obtain the inbred and outbred study groups, respectively. The genetic relationship and structure analysis revealed significant genetic differentiation between the inbred and outbred groups. We also employed a 16S rRNA gene sequencing technique to understand the significant differences between the diversities of the bacterial communities of the inbred and outbred groups. The core microbiota composition in the mouth and the intestine was not affected by the crossbreeding strategy but their abundance varied between the two groups. Furthermore, opportunistic bacteria were abundant in the buccal cavity and intestine of the outbred group, whereas beneficial bacteria were abundant in the intestine of the inbred group. The present study indicates that crossbreeding can influence the abundance of beneficial bacteria, core microbiome and the inter-individual variation in the microbiome.

Environmental DNA (eDNA) has been used to detect the presence of various species in aquatic ecosystems, but its degradation by several environmental factors can influence the correct identification of aquatic organisms. The present study examined the effects of a pesticide, diazinon, on breakage of Cyprinus carpio eDNA. The specimens were exposed to 0 (control), 0.06, 0.1, and 1 ppm of diazinon for 9 days. Water samples were collected at three time points (3, 6, and 9 days postexposure, dpe), and eDNA was extracted. The cytochrome oxidase I (COI) gene was successfully amplified by PCR, and a fuzzy inference system was used to convert DNA smears and breakage to numerical values. eDNA breakage percentage increased with diazinon concentration at all sampling times. At 3 dpe, the maximum eDNA breakage percentage occurred at 0.06 and 0.1 ppm of diazinon; whereas at 6 and 9 dpe, the maximum breakage was found at 1 ppm of diazinon, while exposure time had no significant effect. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to demonstrate that eDNA integrity can be compromised by a diazinon in surface waters. Hence, it is recommended that future eDNA studies take into account pesticide pollution when detecting aquatic species.

Genetic diversity studies are essential in characterization of populations and species conservation. Alosa braschnikowi is a commercially valuable species native to the Caspian Sea. It is thought to have eight to nine subspecies, but the genetics of these populations remains to be investigated. The present study was performed to evaluate the genetic population structures of Caspian marine shad (Alosa braschnikowi) in the southern coast of the Caspian Sea using six pairs of SSR markers. A total of Alosa braschnikowi 140 specimens through five locations across the southern coast of the Caspian Sea were genotyped and 130 alleles were identified. The overall mean values of Ho and He were 0.58 and 0.87, respectively, with the highest and minimum value of Ho observed in Sari (0.67 ± 0.08) and Miankaleh (0.50 ± 0.04), respectively. The overall mean value of allelic richness was 12.6. The data suggest that there was a high rate of migration between populations of Alosa braschnikowi (overall mean of Nm = 13.57), with the highest value (19.07) between Gomishan and Mahmodabad locations. AMOVA results showed that 96% of variation was related to within populations and only 4% belonged to between populations. The mean Fst value of 0.019 indicates a low level of population differentiation. Our data suggest that there may be two genetically separate populations of Alosa braschnikowi across the southern coast of the Caspian Sea and a high rate of migration is likely to limit genetic diversity between them.

Manipulating the coupling coefficient at subwavelength scales provides an additional degree of freedom in designing integrated Bragg gratings. We demonstrate asymmetric contradirectional couplers (contra-DCs) using sidewall-corrugated subwavelength grating (SWG) waveguides for broadband add-drop Bragg filters. We show that a SWG can effectively increase the overlap of coupled modes and thus the photonic band gap. The measured spectra show good agreement with the prediction of photonic band structure simulations. A record bandwidth of 4.07 THz (33.4 nm) has been achieved experimentally. A four-port Bragg resonating filter made of a phase-shifted Bragg grating SWG contra-DC is also demonstrated for narrow-band (near 100 GHz) filtering. All these devices are achieved on the 220-nm silicon-on-insulator platform with a compact length of less than 150 µm. These large stopband filters may find important applications such as band splitting, reconfigurable channel band switching, bandwidth-tunable filtering, and dispersion engineering.

Nano-titanium dioxide (nanoTiO2) under ultraviolet irradiation (UV) followed by dilute sulfuric acid hydrolysis of sugarcane bagasse was used to enhance the production of biohydrogen and biomethane in a consecutive dark fermentation and anaerobic digestion. Different concentrations of 0.001, 0.01, 0.1 and 1g nanoTiO2/L under different UV times of 30, 60, 90 and 120min were used. Sulfuric acid (2%v/v) at 121°C was used for 15, 30 and 60min to hydrolyze the pretreated bagasse. For acidic hydrolysis times of 15, 30 and 60min, the highest total free sugar values were enhanced by 260%, 107%, and 189%, respectively, compared to samples without nanoTiO2 pretreatment. The highest hydrogen production samples for the same acidic hydrolysis times showed 88%, 127%, and 25% enhancement. The maximum hydrogen production of 101.5ml/g VS (volatile solids) was obtained at 1g nanoTiO2/L and 120min UV irradiation followed by 30min acid hydrolysis.
