RESUMEN

Sun hemp fibers are natural fibers obtained from plants grown in India and nearby countries. It is lignocellulosic biomass having the complex structure of hemicelluloses, cellulose and lignin. Chemical treatment of natural fibers is in practice to enhance the properties being used as reinforcement. Alkaline-treated fiber was sampled and thermal stability along with kinetic parameters was assessed with thermo gravimetric data at heating rates 10, 20 and 30 °C/min using four model-free methods Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose (KAS), Flynn-Wall-Ozawa (FWO), Friedman (FM), Starink (STAR) along with Distributed activation energy model (DAEM) to calculate pre-exponential factor. The calculated activation energy Ea by these model-free methods were in the range of 93.3-104.8 kJ/mol and pre-exponential factor (A) was observed between the range 46.6 x103-90.5 x106/min by the DAEM method. The standard deviation (σ) calculated from average activation energy using all four methods was 4.5 kJ/mol, which showed the consistency in the methods employed to determine the activation energy of sun hemp.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Lameness is one of the major causes of reduced physical performance and early retirement in working horses. TamaFlex™ (NXT15906F6) is a standardized synergistic anti-inflammatory botanical formulation containing Tamarindus indica seed extract and Curcuma longa rhizome extract at a 2:1 ratio. METHODS: We conducted a 12-week single-center, randomized, blinded, placebo-controlled trial demonstrating the efficacy of NXT15906F6 in horses with lameness grade 2-4 on the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) scale. Twenty-two lame horses were supplemented with NXT15906F6 (2.5 gram/day) or placebo over a period of 84 days. Improvement in lameness over placebo was the primary endpoint, and changes in the levels of rheumatoid factor (RF), anti-nuclear antibody (ANA), and anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide (ACC-peptide) in serum, and pro-inflammatory cytokines including interleukin (IL-1ß and IL-6), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and prostaglandin-E2 (PGE2 ) in serum and synovial fluid were the secondary endpoints. RESULTS: NXT15906F6 exhibited significant relief from lameness in a time-dependent manner. NXT15906F6 also reduced levels of ANA, PGE2 , IL-1ß, TNF-α and IL-6. Moreover, NXT15906F6 supplementation is safe and tolerable in alleviating joint pain in lame horses, and protects the joints from further degradation by reducing pro-inflammatory mediators. CONCLUSION: NXT15906F6 significantly reduces the lameness during walking and trotting, leading to an improvement in their joint flexibility, health, and working performances.

RESUMEN

Neutralizing antibody-based passive immunotherapy could be an important therapeutic option against COVID-19. Herein, we demonstrate that equines hyper-immunized with chemically inactivated SARS-CoV-2 elicited high antibody titers with a strong virus-neutralizing potential, and F(ab')2 fragments purified from them displayed strong neutralization potential against five different SARS-CoV-2 variants. F(ab')2 fragments purified from the plasma of hyperimmunized horses showed high antigen-specific affinity. Experiments in rabbits suggested that the F(ab')2 displays a linear pharmacokinetics with approximate plasma half-life of 47 h. In vitro microneutralization assays using the purified F(ab')2 displayed high neutralization titers against five different variants of SARS-CoV-2 including the Delta variant, demonstrating its potential efficacy against the emerging viral variants. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that F(ab')2 generated against SARS-CoV-2 in equines have high neutralization titers and have broad target-range against the evolving variants, making passive immunotherapy a potential regimen against the existing and evolving SARS-CoV-2 variants in combating COVID-19.

RESUMEN

Although the surgical extraction of the mandibular third molar is routinely performed in dental clinics, the precise management of complications associated with it requires thorough knowledge and experience in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery. Iatrogenic dislodgment of a tooth or its fragment is a rare complication and usually occurs when excessive, uncontrolled forces are applied via elevators. It also is possible that this rare complication may be underreported. This case report describes the retrieval, under local anesthesia, of a mandibular left third molar crown from the posterosuperior region of the pterygomandibular space after iatrogenic dislodgment.
