RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Achalasia is a very rare disease characterized by the lack of motor coordination in various phases of contraction-relaxation of esophageal muscles. The aim of the study is to determine the correlation between esophageal achalasia and oral diseases. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Thirteen esophageal achalasia patients were assessed for the presence of any potential oral symptoms through a questionnaire. 5 volunteered to be included in the study. The oral health status of these 5 patients was assessed by a clinical oral examination. The oral health status of the included cases was compared to the oral health status data from a published observational study on healthy individuals belonging to the same (Italian) population. RESULTS: Our results show that the number of periodontal pockets with Probing Pocket Dept > 4 mm is significantly increased, compared to the average of the Italian population; the Bleeding On Probing (BOP) is not related to the Plaque Control Record (PCR); so we can say that the value of periodontal index is not correlated with the value of oral hygiene index. CONCLUSIONS: Considering the limitations of a research based on small numbers, it nevertheless seems advisable to assert that there is a correlation between esophageal achalasia and periodontal disease.

RESUMEN

(1) Background: In Italy, about one fourth of all schoolchildren experience a trauma to the permanent dentition. Management of avulsion trauma is challenging and requires adherence to clinical protocols. The aim of this study was to investigate the management knowledge of avulsed teeth among Italian dentists and to promote the guidelines' dissemination through the use of new social media. (2) Methods: The survey was carried out during the COVID-19 lockdown in Italy (March-May 2020). The questionnaire was sent anonymously to a total of 600 dentists. The questionnaire consisted of two parts. Part A-demographic and professional data and Part B-management of traumatic avulsion. (3) Results: The response rate was 50.6% and the mean fraction of correct responses was 0.524. Issues related to the therapeutic management of avulsed teeth were shown to be not well understood by the respondents. Professionals with qualifications in dentistry and those who declared to know the guidelines responded better, while other demographic and professional factors were insignificant. (4) Conclusions: Italian dentists' knowledge of the management of avulsion trauma should be improved. Educational programs and campaigns must be undertaken to improve their awareness and adherence to the Italian and international guidelines.

RESUMEN

Developmental defects of enamel are encountered daily in our dental practice. The management of enamel hypomineralized lesions may be challenging, especially as esthetic concern around the young population is increasing. Resin infiltration, a new technique firstly proposed to halt caries progression in the posterior segment, showed a strong positive esthetic effect in the treatment of developmental defects with different etiologies. Future in-vivo studies are needed to evaluate the longterm color stability, in order to provide a strong clinical recommendation.

RESUMEN

AIM: Aim of this literature overview was to analyze the diagnostic procedures of hidden caries lesions and to present a restorative protocol. METHODS: A literature overview was performed in order to evaluate hidden caries etiological hypothesis and the reported prevalence. The diagnostic procedure is performed with the aid of an intra-oral fluorescence based camera and the restorative procedure is completed with the use of a novel bisphenol-A free composite. RESULTS: Non cavitated occlusal caries lesions prevalence is high in young adults population. Diagnosis of hidden caries requires both high sensitivity and specificity. CONCLUSIONS: The novel diagnostic and restorative protocol showed to be highly effective in hidden caries assessment and restoration.

RESUMEN

Torsades de pointes is a unique form of ventricular tachycardia that occurs in the presence of prolonged QT interval. Many predisposing factors have been identified. A classical form of torsades de pointes occurring in the presence of hypocalcemia and prolonged QT interval in an elderly woman is reported. In this patient the QT prolongation was markedly rate-dependent. Hypocalcemia was a postoperative complication following removal of parathyroid adenoma, performed earlier for hyperparathyroidism. Torsades de pointes did not recur after normalization of serum calcium. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first electrocardiographic documentation of hypocalcemic torsades de pointes.
