RESUMEN

Crystalline rock is used as the host rock for the disposal of high-level radioactive waste. Two cationic elements (Cs(I) and Ni(II)) and three anionic elements (Se(IV/VI), Mo(VI), and U(VI)) were selected to comprehensively evaluate the sorption behaviors of these radionuclides on crystalline granite and biotite gneiss. The anionic elements showed weak sorption (log Kd (L·kg-1) < 1) and little competition effect, while the cationic elements (log Kd (L·kg-1) = 2-3) showed clear competition (18-98% in Kd values) even at low concentrations. Analysis by pseudo-second-order kinetics showed that Cs(I) sorbed at similar rates on both rocks (20% faster on biotite gneiss), but Ni(II) sorbed 190% faster on biotite gneiss than on granite. That is why the retardation factors for Cs(I) and Ni(II) were reversed in the biotite gneiss column compared to their distribution coefficients. Therefore, the sorption kinetics cannot be neglected in groundwater systems with high flow rates. In the desorption column test, the retardation followed the order of the distribution coefficient. The desorption column test revealed that the distribution coefficient determines the strength of sorption on crystalline rocks.

RESUMEN

Due to the neural toxicity of mercury, there is a need for the development of on-site detection systems for Hg2+ monitoring. To this end, a new colorimetric mercury detection probe, Fe3O4@SiO2@Au (magnetic-Au; Mag-Au) hybrid nanoparticles, has been developed. The Au on the surface of Mag-Au is an indicator of Hg2+, which forms an AuHg alloy (amalgam) on their surface (Mag-Au@Hg), with excellent peroxidase-like activity. The oxidation of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine by Mag-Au@Hg resulted in a color change of the indicator solution, which was enhanced with increasing Hg2+ concentration. Mag-Au can be used to detect Hg2+ at nanomolar concentrations. Additionally, magnetic separation can be used to easily purify and concentrate the Mag-Au@Hg from samples, and thus avoid interference from unwanted residues or colored samples. The feasibility of Mag-Au for Hg2+ detection was tested with an artificial urine solution and it can be used to detect Hg2+ in various real samples, such as river water, seawater, food, and biological samples.

RESUMEN

Mag-spinner, a system in which magnets are combined with a spinner system, is a new type of magnetic separation system for the preprocessing of biological and medical samples. Interference by undesired components restricts the detection accuracy and efficiency. Thus, the development of appropriate separation techniques is required for better detection of the desired targets, to enrich the target analytes and remove the undesired components. The strong response of iron oxide nanoclusters can successfully capture the targets quickly and with high efficiency. As a result, cancer cells can be effectively separated from blood using the developed mag-spinner system. Indeed, this system satisfies the requirements for desirable separation systems, namely (i) fast sorting rates, (ii) high separation efficiency, (iii) the ability to process native biological fluids, (iv) simple operating procedures, (v) low cost, (vi) operational convenience, and (vii) portability. Therefore, this system is widely applicable to sample preparation without limitations on place, cost, and equipment.

RESUMEN

Magnetic nanoparticles have an important role as heat generators in magnetic fluid hyperthermia, a type of next-generation cancer treatment. Despite various trials to improve the heat generation capability of magnetic nanoparticles, iron oxide nanoparticles are the only approved heat generators for clinical applications, which require a large injection dose due to their low hyperthermia efficiency. In this study, iron oxide nanoclusters (NCs) with a highly enhanced hyperthermia effect and adjustable size were synthesized through a facile and simple solvothermal method. Among the samples, the NCs with a size of 25 nm showed the highest hyperthermia efficiency. Differently sized NCs exhibit inconsistent interparticle crystalline alignments, which affect their magnetic properties (e.g., coercivity and saturation magnetization). As a result, the optimal NCs exhibited a significantly enhanced heat generation efficiency compared with that of isolated iron oxide nanoparticles (ca. 7 nm), and their hyperthermia effect on skin cancer cells was confirmed.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The patient's pattern identification has been used for personalized medicine in traditional Korean medicine (TKM) and aims for patient-specific therapy by Korean medical doctors. The pattern identification in this trial will be diagnosed from body constitution questionnaire (BCQ) with a more objective diagnosis of it but this method still needs a more concrete scientific basis. Glycoproteins are well-known to be associated with diseases (especially cancers) so glycoproteomics can be applied to differentiate pattern identification types of lung cancer patients. Thus, for the first time proteomics approach will be applied to the pattern identification by comparing BCQ assessment in order to establish a scientific basis with clinical proteomics for precision medicine. METHODS: This observational trial will at first diagnose the pattern identification types of lung cancer patients with BCQ assessment and then elucidate their relationships with proteomics. Blood samples will be collected before surgery along with clinical information of participants. The patients' pattern identification in TKM will be diagnosed from BCQ assessment. Then, lung cancer patients will be divided and pooled into 3 lung cancer entire (LCE) groups according to their pattern identification types (Xu, Stasis, or Gentleness). Three lung cancer representative (LCR) groups will be selected and pooled from each LCE group by selecting those with the same control factors. The 3 LCE groups and the 3 LCR groups from lung cancer patients will be independently analyzed through the glycoproteomics approach based on the patients' pattern identification. Glycoproteins from the 6 groups will be identified through proteomics approach and then categorized for analysis. DISCUSSION: This study intends to diagnose pattern identification of patients in TKM with BCQ assessment and proteomics approach. The identification of the glycoproteins in each group will lead to the scientific foundation of personalized medicine in TKM according to patients' pattern identification for lung cancer therapy. We intend to(1) diagnose the pattern identification types of lung cancer patients with BCQ under the framework of TKM;(2) evaluate BCQ assessment with glycoproteomics approach for precision medicine. TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials.gov NCT03384680. Registered 27 December 2017. Retrospectively registered.

RESUMEN

Gamma-irradiation (0-7 kGy) of ginseng is permitted in Korea for the purpose of microbial decontamination; with strict labeling, traceability and monitoring requirements. An identification study was conducted to determine the photostimulated-luminescence (PSL) and thermoluminescence (TL) properties of gamma-irradiated fresh and white ginsengs cultivated in different areas. Dosedependent PSL-based screening was possible for white ginseng samples; however, inappropriate results from non-irradiated fresh ginseng samples were obtained, showing intermediate (700 to 5,000) or positive (T2 >5,000, irradiated) PSL counts due to the abundance of minerals on the surfaces of the samples. TL analysis of separated minerals from all non-irradiated samples gave TL glow curves of low intensity with a maximum peak after 300℃. However, well-defined irradiation-specific (high intensity with a maximum peak at about 200℃) glow curves were observed for all the irradiated samples, regardless of their type and origins. TL ratios (first glow curve /second glow curve) were also determined to confirm the irradiated (>0.1) and non-irradiated (<0.1) results. SEM-EDX (scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive X-ray) and XRD (X-ray diffraction) spectroscopic analyses showed that feldspar and quartz minerals were the main source for the typical radiation-specific luminescence properties.

RESUMEN

The monetary value of the man-mSv for operators of Korean nuclear power plants (NPPs) was calculated using a radiation aversion factor based on a survey of NPP workers. Initially, the life expectancy in the population is 79.4 y, the average age of cancer occurrence is 60 y, the average annual wage for an electric worker is 56 000 $ y(-1) and the nominal risk coefficient induced by radiation is 4.2E(-5) mSv were used to evaluate the basic monetary value (α(base)) resulting in 45.6 $ mSv(-1). To investigate the degree of radiation aversion, the subject of the investigation was selected as the working radiation workers in 10 NPPs in Korea (Kori 1-2, Yeonggwang 1-3, Ulchin 1-3 and Wolseong 1-2). In August 2010, with the cooperation of KHNP and partner companies, a total of 2500 survey questionnaires to 10 NPPs (or 250 surveys to each NPP) were distributed to currently employed radiation workers. From these, 2157 responses were obtained between August and October 2010. The assessed radiation aversion factor and the monetary value of the man-mSv from the calculated radiation aversion factor were 1.26 and ∼50 $ in the 0-1 mSv range, 1.38 and ∼200 $ in the 1-5 mSv range, 1.52 and ∼1000 $ in the 5-10 mSv range, 1.65 and ∼4000 $ in the 10-20 mSv range and 1.74 and ∼8500 $ >20 mSv.
