RESUMEN

Tactile sensory organs for sensing 3D force, such as human skin and fish lateral lines, are indispensable for organisms. With their sensory properties enhanced by layered structures, typical sensory organs can achieve excellent perception as well as protection under frequent mechanical contact. Here, inspired by these layered structures, a split-type magnetic soft tactile sensor with wireless 3D force sensing and a high accuracy (1.33%) fabricated by developing a centripetal magnetization arrangement and theoretical decoupling model is introduced. The 3D force decoupling capability enables it to achieve a perception close to that of human skin in multiple dimensions without complex calibration. Benefiting from the 3D force decoupling capability and split design with a long effective distance (>20 mm), several sensors are assembled in air and water to achieve delicate robotic operation and water flow-based navigation with an offset <1.03%, illustrating the extensive potential of magnetic tactile sensors in flexible electronics, human-machine interactions, and bionic robots.

BACKGROUND: Neurocysticercosis is a parasitic infection of the central nervous system by tapeworm larvae. Spinal cysticercosis is thought to be relatively rare, and spinal nerve root sleeve cysticercosis have not been reported previously. CASE PRESENTATION: A 46-year-old Chinese Han female patient presented with low back pain and radicular pain of the right lower limb. The visual analog scale was 6. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a subarachnoid cyst at the S1 level, with a slight enhanced rim. The patient underwent surgical treatment. During surgery, we found the cyst located mainly in the subarachnoid space and partly in a sacral nerve root sleeve. Cysticercosis was also confirmed by postoperative pathological examination. Postoperative drug therapy was performed after cysticercosis was confirmed. Postoperatively, the patient was treated with oral albendazole (15 mg/kg) for 1 month. Only mild sensory impairment was left when she was discharged. After 3 years of follow-up, the visual analog scale reduced from 6 to 2, and the patient's sensory function completely recovered. Magnetic resonance imaging showed no recurrence of cysticercosis. CONCLUSION: Subarachnoid cysticercosis may extend to nerve root sleeve causing back pain and radiculopathy, which may present with similar magnetic resonance imaging manifestations to Tarlov cysts. Hence, spinal subarachnoid cysticercosis should be considered as an important differential diagnosis of arachnoid cyst and sacral Tarlov cyst. Combined treatment with surgical removal and drug therapy is effective to manage spinal subarachnoid cysticercosis.

Multilayer polymer composite structures have been playing important roles in various fields, but the voids inside are not allowed in most scenarios. Ultrasonic technology has been widely used to inspect voids in concrete and metal structures. However, the application of ultrasonic imaging in polymer composite structures is severely blocked by the coating and lamination structures and unstable manufacturing induced sound speed variations. In this paper, a method to autofocus imaging of internal voids in multilayer polymer composite structures with ultrasonic phased array is firstly proposed. The method processes the full matrix capture (FMC) and focuses all voids in the multilayer structure automatically without the prior information of the speed of sound (SOS). The method utilizes the focus criterions to evaluate the focusing quality and then estimates the SOS with differential evolution layer by layer from surface to deep, which improves the robustness and computational efficiency. The method was examined with simulation data from three multilayer structures and well-focused all voids with position error less than 0.6 mm and SOS error less than 6 %. Moreover, the method was verified with the experimental data and focused voids with position error less than 1 mm.

Diffuse reflectance spectrophotometry (DRS) is a new, fast, and reliable method to characterize Fe-oxides in soils. The Fe-oxide mineralogy of the Jiujiang red earth sediments was investigated using DRS to investigate the climate evolution of southern China since the mid-Pleistocene. The DRS results show that hematite/(hematite + goethite) ratios [Hm/(Hm + Gt)] exhibit an upward decreasing trend within the Jiujiang section, suggesting a gradual climate change from warm and humid in the middle Pleistocene to cooler and drier in the late Pleistocene. Upsection trends toward higher (orthoclase + plagioclase)/quartz ratios [(Or + Pl)/Q] and magnetic susceptibility values (χlf) support this inference, which accords with global climate trends at that time. However, higher-frequency climatic subcycles observed in loess sections of northern China are not evident in the Jiujiang records, indicating a relatively lower climate sensitivity of the red earth sediments in southern China.
