RESUMEN

AIM: Faecal immunochemical testing (FIT) is used to triage people with signs or symptoms of a colorectal cancer (CRC). Recent guidelines have recommended further research to improve access, uptake and return of FIT. This systematic scoping review aims to understand the barriers and facilitators to FIT testing in symptomatic patients. METHOD: Qualitative, quantitative and mixed-methods studies published after September 2013 were included. MEDLINE, EMBASE and PsycINFO databases were searched to identify publications examining barriers and facilitators to FIT. Initially, the data underwent thematic analysis, and subsequently, factors were aligned to components of the Capability, Opportunity, Motivation, Behaviour model. All outcomes are presented in adherence to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. RESULTS: One thousand two hundred thirty-two papers were identified; 11 met the inclusion criteria. Barriers and facilitators were identified at the patient (e.g., knowledge), provider (e.g., general practitioner awareness) and service level (e.g., method of providing FIT kits). Factors were categorised into the subcomponents of the model: psychological capability (e.g., lack of FIT knowledge), reflective motivation (e.g., beliefs regarding FIT sampling and faeces being unhygienic) and automatic motivation (e.g., embarrassment, scary, anxiety provoking). Gaps in knowledge emerged in three domains: (1) patient experience, (2) FIT pathway and (3) healthcare professionals experience of FIT. CONCLUSION: This systematic scoping review provides a summary of the literature on FIT uptake, and identified factors across multiple levels and components. To increase adherence to FIT completion within primary care, a multifaceted theory and evidence-based approach is needed to underpin future behavioural science interventions.

RESUMEN

The first example of Lewis base promoted [4 + 2] annulation between o-acylamino-aryl MBH carbonates and isatin has been developed. This methodology exhibits excellent substrate applicability and has synthesized 1,4-dihydrospiro benzo[d][1,3]oxazine-oxindoles with yields up to 98%. The practical value of this method is underscored by its successful application in a 50-fold scale-up.

BACKGROUND: With the increasing use of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) in advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), there remains an unmet need for options to address disease progression after prior ICIs. This single-arm phase II study evaluated the efficacy and safety of re-challenge with camrelizumab plus apatinib in patients with advanced ESCC who were previously treated with ICIs. METHODS: This study enrolled patients aged 18-75 years with unresectable locally advanced, locally recurrent, or distant metastatic ESCC who received prior ICIs. Patients received intravenous camrelizumab 200 mg every 2 weeks and oral apatinib 250 mg daily until disease progression, unacceptable toxicity, or consent withdrawal. The primary endpoint was the investigator-assessed confirmed objective response rate (ORR). RESULTS: Between September 1, 2021 and March 29, 2023, 49 eligible patients were enrolled and received treatment. Among the 49 patients, the confirmed ORR was 10.2 % (95 % CI 3.4-22.2), the disease control rate (DCR) was 69.4 % (54.6-81.7), the median progression-free survival (PFS) was 4.6 months (95 % CI 3.8-6.5) and overall survival (OS) was 7.5 months (5.5-13.6). Grade ≥ 3 treatment-related adverse events occurred in 17 patients (34.7 %). No treatment-related deaths occurred. CONCLUSIONS: This study showed that the confirmed ORR was modest and did not reach clinically meaningful improvement for patients with ESCC who were previously treated with ICIs, with a manageable safety profile.

The study explored the use of current fluid dynamics drying technology for apricot abalone mushroom, examining how different output voltages (15, 25, and 35 kV) affected drying characteristics, microstructure, and volatile components. Comparisons were made with samples dried using hot air drying (HAD) and natural air drying (AD). Results revealed that HAD had the fastest drying rate at 0.29664(g·h-1). However, apricot abalone mushroom treated with electrohydrodynamic drying (EHD) maintained a color closer to fresh samples, exhibited a 21% increase in the ordered structure of protein secondary structure, a 12.5-fold increase in bound water content, and the most stable cell structure compared to HAD and AD treatments. A total of 83 volatile organic compounds were identified in the apricot abalone mushroom, with alcohols and aldehydes being the most prominent in terms of threshold and relative content, peaking in the 35 kV treatment group. These findings provide both experimental and theoretical insights into applying current fluid dynamics for drying apricot abalone mushroom.

BACKGROUND: Foreign body (FB) inhalation, ingestion, and insertion account for 11% of emergency admissions for ear, nose, and throat conditions. Children are disproportionately affected, and urgent intervention may be needed to maintain airway patency and prevent blood vessel occlusion. High-quality, readable online information could help reduce poor outcomes from FBs. OBJECTIVE: We aim to evaluate the quality and readability of available online health information relating to FBs. METHODS: In total, 6 search phrases were queried using the Google search engine. For each search term, the first 30 results were captured. Websites in the English language and displaying health information were included. The provider and country of origin were recorded. The modified 36-item Ensuring Quality Information for Patients tool was used to assess information quality. Readability was assessed using a combination of tools: Flesch Reading Ease score, Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level, Gunning-Fog Index, and Simple Measure of Gobbledygook. RESULTS: After the removal of duplicates, 73 websites were assessed, with the majority originating from the United States (n=46, 63%). Overall, the quality of the content was of moderate quality, with a median Ensuring Quality Information for Patients score of 21 (IQR 18-25, maximum 29) out of a maximum possible score of 36. Precautionary measures were not mentioned on 41% (n=30) of websites and 30% (n=22) did not identify disk batteries as a risky FB. Red flags necessitating urgent care were identified on 95% (n=69) of websites, with 89% (n=65) advising patients to seek medical attention and 38% (n=28) advising on safe FB removal. Readability scores (Flesch Reading Ease score=12.4, Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level=6.2, Gunning-Fog Index=6.5, and Simple Measure of Gobbledygook=5.9 years) showed most websites (56%) were below the recommended sixth-grade level. CONCLUSIONS: The current quality and readability of information regarding FBs is inadequate. More than half of the websites were above the recommended sixth-grade reading level, and important information regarding high-risk FBs such as disk batteries and magnets was frequently excluded. Strategies should be developed to improve access to high-quality information that informs patients and parents about risks and when to seek medical help. Strategies to promote high-quality websites in search results also have the potential to improve outcomes.

The pyroptosis of renal tubular epithelial cells leads to tubular loss and inflammation and then promotes renal fibrosis. The transcription factor Krüppel-like factor 4 (KLF4) can bidirectionally regulate the transcription of target genes. Our previous study revealed that sustained elevation of KLF4 is responsible for the transition of acute kidney injury (AKI) into chronic kidney disease (CKD) and renal fibrosis. In this study, we explored the upstream mechanisms of renal tubular epithelial cell pyroptosis from the perspective of posttranslational regulation and focused on the transcription factor KLF4. Mice were subjected to unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO) surgery and euthanized on D7 or D14 for renal tissue harvesting. We showed that the pyroptosis of renal tubular epithelial cells mediated by both the Caspase-1/GSDMD and Caspase-3/GSDME pathways was time-dependently increased in UUO mouse kidneys. Furthermore, we found that the expression of the transcription factor KLF4 was also upregulated in a time-dependent manner in UUO mouse kidneys. Tubular epithelial cell-specific Klf4 knockout alleviated UUO-induced pyroptosis and renal fibrosis. In Ang II-treated mouse renal proximal tubular epithelial cells (MTECs), we demonstrated that KLF4 bound to the promoter regions of Caspase-3 and Caspase-1 and directly increased their transcription. In addition, we found that ubiquitin-specific protease 11 (USP11) was increased in UUO mouse kidneys. USP11 deubiquitinated KLF4. Knockout of Usp11 or pretreatment with the USP11 inhibitor mitoxantrone (3 mg/kg, i.p., twice a week for two weeks before UUO surgery) significantly alleviated the increases in KLF4 expression, pyroptosis and renal fibrosis. These results demonstrated that the increased expression of USP11 in renal tubular cells prevents the ubiquitin degradation of KLF4 and that elevated KLF4 promotes inflammation and renal fibrosis by initiating tubular cell pyroptosis.

Background: About 20% of on-treatment patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) experienced low-level viraemia (LLV), which is associated with persistent low-grade inflammation, fibrosis progression, and increased risk of hepatocellular carcinoma. We aimed to investigate the high-risk factors related to LLV. Methods: In this retrospective study, patients receiving entecavir (ETV) treatment from January 2018 to January 2023 were enrolled, and were divided into a LLV (HBV DNA 20-2000 IU/mL) cohort and a complete virological response (CVR) (HBV DNA < 20 IU/mL) cohort according to the virological response at week 48 posttreatment. Treatment baseline characteristics were retrieved from electronic medical records. Multivariate logistic regression was performed. Results: Totally, 1653 patients were enrolled, male patients accounted for 73.0%; the median age was 44 years; the mean HBV DNA level was 5.9 Log10 IU/ml. Among them, 472 (28.6%) experienced LLV. Multivariate analysis showed that HBeAg positivity (OR = 2.650, 95% CI: 2.000-3.511, p < 0.001), HBV DNA ≥ 6.0 Log10 IU/mL (OR = 1.370, 95% CI: 1.054-1.780, p = 0.019), qHBsAg ≥ 9000 IU/mL (OR = 4.472, 95% CI: 3.410-5.866, p < 0.001), cirrhosis (OR = 1.650, 95% CI: 1.234-2.207, P = 0.001), LSM ≥ 13.0 kPa (OR = 1.644, 95% CI: 1.203-2.246, p = 0.002), and PLT < 100×109/L (OR = 1.450, 95% CI: 1.094-1.922, p = 0.010) at baseline were related to the development of LLV. Conclusions: High HBV DNA/HBsAg quantification/LSM, low PLT, HBeAg positivity, and liver cirrhosis were high-risk factors associated with LLV in patients receiving entecavir treatment.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have been linked to kidney function. Studies have shown that PFAS can cause changes in lipid metabolism and that lipids play an important role in regulating kidney function. However, few studies have explored the overall impact of PFAS mixture on kidney function. Moreover, the mechanisms by which PFAS influences kidney function remain unclear. This study was performed to investigate the overall impact of PFAS mixture on kidney function indexes, dissect the mechanism by which PFAS affect kidney function by analyzing lipid molecule profiles, and analyze the associations between different subclasses of lipids and kidney function indexes. We measured blood PFAS levels and kidney function indexes in a community population containing 278 males. Metabolomic analysis detected 332 lipid molecules. A quantile-based g-computation model was applied to assess the overall effect of PFAS mixture on kidney function index, and revealed that PFAS mixture were associated with a higher level of uric acid (UA). Linear regression analysis demonstrated a positive association between PFOA and UA, and logistic regression analysis indicated a positive association between PFOA and hyperuricemia odds. Notably, none of the PFAS were associated with the estimated glomerular filtration rate, indicating that PFAS didn't have an obvious effect on glomerular filtration. Further analysis identified 20 lipid molecules associated with both PFOA and UA. High-dimensional mediation effect analysis showed that seven lipid molecules (one glycerophospholipid, three fatty acyls, and three prenol lipids) mediated the association between PFOA and UA. Additionally, quantile-based g-computation analysis revealed positive associations between specific lipid subclasses-mainly fatty acid esters, fatty acids and conjugates, and sesquiterpenoids-and kidney function indexes. Our findings provide insights into the renal toxicity of PFAS and may also lead to more in-depth investigations using animal models and other population studies.

Detailed data on safety associated with drug-drug interactions (DDIs) between Linezolid (LZD) and other antibiotics are limited. The aim of this study was to investigate the safety signals related to these DDIs and to provide a reference for clinically related adverse drug event monitoring. Adverse event (AE) information from 1 January 2004 to 16 June 2022 of the target antibiotics including LZD using alone or in combination with LZD was extracted from the OpenVigil FDA data platform for safety signal analysis. The combined risk ratio model, reporting ratio method, Ω shrinkage measure model, and chi-square statistics model were used to analyze the safety signals related to DDIs. Meanwhile, we evaluated the correlation and the influence of sex and age between the drug(s) and the target AE detected. There were 18991 AEs related to LZD. There were 2293, 1726, 4449, 821, 2431, 1053, and 463 AE reports when LZD was combined with amikacin, voriconazole, meropenem, clarithromycin, levofloxacin, piperacillin-tazobactam, and azithromycin, respectively. Except for azithromycin, there were positive safety signals related to DDIs between LZD and these antibiotics. These DDIs might influence the incidence of 13, 16, 7, 7, 6, and 15 types of AEs, respectively, and is associated with higher reporting rates of AEs compared with use alone. Moreover, sex and age might influence the occurrence of AEs. We found that the combinations of LZD and other antibiotics are related to multiple AEs, such as hepatotoxicity, drug resistance and electrocardiogram QT prolonged, but further research is still required to investigate their underlying mechanisms. This study can provide a new reference for the safety monitoring of LZD combined with other antibiotics in clinical practice.

Objective: To evaluate the current status and equity of older adult resource allocation in the 31 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) of mainland China, and to offer recommendations for the optimization of these allocations. Methods: Four key indicators, namely, the number of older adult institutions, employees, professionals, and beds in mainland China in the year 2020, were used and analyzed using various methods and tools, including agglomeration analysis, the Gini coefficient, and the Lorenz Curve. These methods were applied to evaluate the equity of older adult resource allocation across the different provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) and regions of China, using two dimensions, namely, the geographical area and the older adult population. Results: Overall, the number of older adult resource allocations was found to be increasing in China, while the number of employees with educational levels of junior college or above was relatively low and the population structure was aging. In terms of the equity of older adult resource allocation, the results showed that this was good according to the dimensions of the older adult population but was on the low side based on the dimension of geographical area, and the Gini coefficient of the western region, in particular, was in an alarming state. Different provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) were found to have an uneven allocation of resources for older adults, with large differences, with some areas having a serious under-allocation of resources, while others showed resource over-allocation. Conclusion: While China's allocation of older adult resources is relatively equitable, there is nevertheless a need to take into account recent changes in the older adult population and strengthen the construction of a reasonably structured, high-quality team of professionals and technicians, as well as consider factors such as geographical area and the older adult population, and rationally allocate older adult resources in the eastern, middle, and western regions, to achieve a balanced allocation in terms of equity and efficiency and enhance social capital, to better satisfy the demands for older adult services in older adults at multiple levels.

Mycorrhizal associations are key mutualisms that shape the structure of forest communities and multiple ecosystem functions. However, we lack a framework for predicting the varying dominance of distinct mycorrhizal associations in an integrated proxy of multifunctionality across ecosystems. Here, we used the datasets containing diversity of mycorrhizal associations and 18 ecosystem processes related to supporting, provisioning, and regulating services to examine how the dominance of ectomycorrhiza (EcM) associations affects ecosystem multifunctionality in subtropical mountain forests in Southwest China. Meanwhile, we synthesized the prevalence of EcM-dominant effects on ecosystem functioning in forest biomes. Our results demonstrated that elevation significantly modified the distributions of EcM trees and fungal dominance, which in turn influenced multiple functions simultaneously. Multifunctionality increased with increasing proportion of EcM associations, supporting the ectomycorrhizal-dominance hypothesis. Meanwhile, we observed that the impacts of EcM dominance on individual ecosystem functions exhibited different relationships among forest biomes. Our findings highlight the importance of ectomycorrhizal dominance in regulating multifunctionality in subtropical forests. However, this ectomycorrhizal feedback in shaping ecosystem functions cannot necessarily be generalized across forests. Therefore, we argue that the predictions for ecosystem multifunctionality in response to the shifts of mycorrhizal composition could vary across space and time.

This study aimed to identify and quantify the primary components in lotus leaf and to explore the hypolipidemic components through spectral-effect relationships and chemometric methods. Utilizing a data-dependent acquisition-diagnostic fragment ion/characteristic neutral loss screening strategy (DFI-NLS), a reliable HPLC-Q-TOF-MS analysis was conducted, identifying 77 compounds, including 36 flavonoids, 21 alkaloids, 3 terpenoids, 11 organic acids, 4 phenols, 1 lignin and 1 unsaturated hydrocarbon. A straightforward HPLC-DAD method was developed for the simultaneous determination of seven major components in lotus leaf, and quercetin-3-O-glucuronide (Q3GA) was identified as the most abundant component. The HPLC fingerprints of 36 lotus leaf sample batches were assessed using chemometric approaches such as principal component analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis. The hypolipidemic effect of these samples was analyzed by measuring total cholesterol (TC) and total triglycerides (TG) levels in palmitic acid (PA) and oleic acid (OA)-induced lipid modeling in HepG-2 cells, employing partial least squares regression and grey relation analysis to investigate the spectral-effect relationship of the lotus leaf. The in vivo hypolipidemic effect of these compounds was assessed using an egg yolk powder-induced high-fat zebrafish model. The findings indicated that peak No.11 (Q3GA) in the chemical fingerprint was significantly associated with hypolipidemic activity, suggesting it as a potential hypolipidemic compound in lotus leaf. In summary, this study facilitates the exploration of the phytochemical compounds and their bioactive properties in the lotus leaf.

Aromatic sulfones are the prevailing scaffolds in pharmaceutical and material sciences. However, compared to their widespread application, the selective deuterium labeling of these structures is restricted due to their electron-deficient properties. This study presents two comprehensive strategies for the deuteration of aromatic sulfones. The base-promoted deuteration uses DMSO-d6 as the deuterium source, resulting in a rapid H/D exchange within 2 h. Meanwhile, a silver-catalyzed protocol offers a much milder option by using economical D2O to furnish the labeled sulfones.

This present work consists of investigating the effects of particle size heterogeneity and flow rates on transport-reaction kinetics of CuSO4 and Na2EDTA2- in porous media, via the combination of a bimolecular reaction experiment and model simulations. In the early stages of transport, a peak is observed in the concentration breakthrough curve of the reactant CuSO4, related to the delayed mixing and reaction of the reactants. The numerical results show that an increase in flow rate promotes the mixing processes between the reactants, resulting in a larger peak concentration and a slighter tail of breakthrough curves, while an increase in medium heterogeneity leads to a more significant heavy tail. The apparent anomalous diffusion and heavy-tailing behavior can be effectively quantified by a novel truncated fractional derivative bimolecular reaction model. The truncated fractional-order model, taking into account the incomplete mixing, offers a satisfactory reproduction of the experimental data.

OBJECTIVE: Endometrial cancer (EC) is an oestrogen-dependent tumour, the occurrence of which is closely related to an imbalance of oestrogen homeostasis. Our previous studies explored the effects of Resveratrol(Res) on oestrogen metabolism. However, systematic research on the exact mechanism of action of Res is still lacking. Based on network pharmacology, molecular docking and animal experiments, the effects and molecular mechanisms of Res on endometrial cancer were investigated. METHODS: The target of Res was obtained from the high-throughput experiment and reference-guided database of TCM (HERB) and the Encyclopedia of Traditional Chinese Medicine (ETCM) databases, and the target of endometrial cancer was obtained by using the Genecards database. Venny map was used to obtain the intersection target of Res in the treatment of endometrial cancer, and the protein interaction network of the intersection target was constructed by importing the data into the STRING database. Then, the drug-disease-target interaction network was constructed based on Cytoscape 3.9.1 software. Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment analyses were performed for intersection targets using the OmicShare cloud platform. Res and core targets were analysed by molecular docking. EC model mice induced by MNNG were randomly divided into the control group, Res group, MNNG group, MNNG + Res group, and MNNG + Res + MAPK/ERKi group. The protein levels of ERK and p-ERK in the mouse uterus were detected by Western blot. The levels of E1, E2, E3, 16-epiE3, 17-epiE3, 2-MeOE1, 4-MeOE1, 2-MeOE2, 4-MeOE2, 3-MeOE1, 2-OHE1, 4-OHE1, 2-OHE2, 4-OHE2, and 16α-OHE1 in the serum and endometrial tissue of mice were measured by LC‒MS/MS. RESULTS: A total of 174 intersection targets of Res anti-endometrial cancer were obtained. The signalling pathways analysed by KEGG enrichment included the AGE-RAGE signalling pathway in diabetic complications, the PI3K-Akt signalling pathway and the MAPK signalling pathway. The top 10 core targets were MAPK3, JUN, TP53, CASP3, TNF, IL1B, AKT1, FOS, VEGFA and INS. Molecular docking showed that in addition to TNF, other targets had good affinity for Res, and the binding activity with MAPK3 was stable. Western blot results showed that Res increased the phosphorylation level of ERK and that MAPK/ERKi decreased ERK activation. In the LC-MS/MS analysis, the levels of 2-MeOE1, 2-MeOE2 and 4-MeOE1 in serum and uterine tissue showed a significantly decreasing trend in the MNNG group, while that of 4-OHE2 was increased (P < 0.05). The concentrations of 4-MeOE1 in serum and 2-MeOE1 and 2-MeOE2 in the endometrial tissue of mice were significantly increased after Res treatment, and those of 4-OHE2 in the serum and uterus of mice were significantly decreased (P < 0.05). Meanwhile, in the MAPK/ERKi intervention group, the effect of Res on the reversal of oestrogen homeostasis imbalance was obviously weakened. CONCLUSION: Res has multiple targets and multiple approaches in the treatment of endometrial cancer. In this study, it was found that Res regulates oestrogen metabolism by activating the MAPK/ERK pathway. This finding provides a new perspective for subsequent research on the treatment of endometrial cancer.

In this work, we reported that by using a strong thiol ligand as the morphology-directing reagent, a series of Au nanoparticles with plate-like surface sub-structures could be successfully obtained via a one-pot seedless synthesis. The size and the density of the plates on the surface of Au can be readily tuned with the amount of the thiol ligand, resembling different roughness of the surface. Arising from the different surface roughness, the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of these shape and morphological alike Au nanoparticles can be continuously tuned within the visible-NIR region. The broad LSPR absorptions and feasible tunability make the Au nanoparticles suitable candidate for plasmonic-related applications. Interestingly, huge SERS enhancement was simultaneously achieved based on the specific surface roughness. Our results demonstrate the great potentials for tuning the LSPR and SERS of Au nanostructures through the engineering of the surface morphologies, which would assist for the design, synthesis, and applications of Au-based plasmonic nanomaterials in various fields.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the clinical phenotype and gene mutation of a genetic coagulation factor XII (FXII) deficiency pedigree and explore the molecular pathogenesis. METHODS: The activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) and FXII activity (FXII:C) were detected by clotting method. The FXII antigen (FXII:Ag) was tested with ELISA. All exons and flanks of F12 gene were determined by Sanger sequencing. ClustalX-2.1-win, PROVEAN and Swiss-Pdb Viewer software were used to analyze the conservatism of amino acids at the mutant site, forecast whether the mutant amino acids were harmful and confirm the influence of the mutation on protein structure. RESULTS: The APTT of the proband prolonged to 71.3 s. The FXII:C and FXII:Ag were decreased to 5% and 6%, respectively. There were two heterozygous missense mutations c.580G>T and c.1681G>A detected in exon 7 and exon 14 of F12 gene, resulting in p.Gly175Cys and p.Gly542Ser, severally. Proband's father carried the p.Gly175Cys heterozygous mutation, while mother, brother and daughter had the p.Gly542Ser heterozygous mutation. Software analysis showed that both Gly175 and Gly542 were conserved, the two mutations were harmful and when mutations had occurred, the corresponding sites affected the protein local structure. CONCLUSION: The p.Gly175Cys and p.Gly542Ser compound heterozygous mutations are the molecular pathogenesis of the hereditary coagulation FXII deficiency pedigree. The p.Gly175Cys mutation has been detected for the first time in the world.

Past research supports the detrimental effects of parental psychological control on adolescent school adjustment in both emotional and academic domains. However, how psychological control changes during adolescence, and how such developmental course is related to adolescent psychological well-being and academic functioning are unclear. The direction of effects between parenting and child behaviors is also inconclusive. This 3-year longitudinal study addressed these research gaps by using five waves of survey data on 710 Chinese adolescents of high school ages (Mean age at T1 = 15.54 years, SD = 0.45, 50% males). Using latent growth curve models and latent class growth analysis, the majority of adolescents (about 63%) reported gradual increases of parental psychological control in the first 2 years of high school but a slight decline afterwards, while the other 37% perceived low and stable levels. Results from parallel latent growth modeling suggested that trajectories of psychological control were positively related to developmental trends of internalizing problems (i.e., depression and anxiety) and maladaptive academic functioning, but negatively associated with the trajectory of adaptive academic functioning, as indexed by intercept-intercept and slope-slope associations. The random-intercept cross-lagged models further revealed that psychological control was predictive of adolescent anxiety and lower adaptive academic functioning, and bidirectionally associated with maladaptive academic-related beliefs and behaviors at the within-person level. Taken together, these findings highlight the crucial role of parental psychological control on adolescent school adjustment in the Chinese cultural context and support the reciprocal model of parent-child interactions.

INTRODUCTION: Dimenhydrinate and scopolamine are frequently used drugs, but they cause drowsiness and performance decrement. Therefore, it is crucial to find peripheral targets and develop new drugs without central side effects. This study aimed to investigate the anti-motion sickness action and inner ear-related mechanisms of atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP). METHODS: Endolymph volume in the inner ear was measured with magnetic resonance imaging and expression of AQP2 and p-AQP2 was detected with Western blot analysis and immunofluorescence method. RESULTS: Both rotational stimulus and intraperitoneal arginine vasopressin (AVP) injection induced conditioned taste aversion (CTA) to 0.15% sodium saccharin solution and an increase in the endolymph volume of the inner ear. However, intraperitoneal injection of ANP effectively alleviated the CTA behaviour and reduced the increase in the endolymph volume after rotational stimulus. Intratympanic injection of ANP also inhibited rotational stimulus-induced CTA behaviour, but anantin peptide, an inhibitor of ANP receptor A (NPR-A), blocked this inhibitory effect of ANP. Both rotational stimulus and intraperitoneal AVP injection increased the expression of AQP2 and p-AQP2 in the inner ear of rats, but these increases were blunted by ANP injection. In in vitro experiments, ANP addition decreased AVP-induced increases in the expression and phosphorylation of AQP2 in cultured endolymphatic sac epithelial cells. CONCLUSION: Therefore, the present study suggests that ANP could alleviate motion sickness through regulating endolymph volume of the inner ear increased by AVP, and this action of ANP is potentially mediated by activating NPR-A and antagonising the increasing effect of AVP on AQP2 expression and phosphorylation.
