RESUMEN

Separation of racemic drugs is of great importance and interest in chemistry and pharmacology. Here, we report the bottom-up synthesis of the binaphthyl-based chiral covalent organic frameworks (CCOFs), (R)-BHTP-COF. Then, high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) columns were prepared using (R)-BHTP-COF as a chiral stationary phase (CSP). Racemic ibuprofen was successfully baseline-separated on (R)-BHTP-COF-based CSP, and achieved excellent selectivity (α = 2.32) and chromatographic resolution (Rs = 3.39) factors. Meanwhile, the separation of six racemic drugs by the (R)-BHTP-COF-packed column exhibited high resolution, selectivity, and durability. The successful applications indicate the great potential of CCOFs as a novel stationary phase for efficient HPLC separation.

BACKGROUND: Hypoxia inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) is a sensitive indicator of oxygen homeostasis, of which the expression elevates following hypoxia/ischemia. This study reveals the specific mechanisms underlying the effects of HIF-1α on ischemic stroke (IS). METHODS: IS model was established using middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO)-modeled male rats and oxygen glucose deprivation/reoxygenation (OGD/R)-treated mice hippocampal cells HT22, followed by the silencing of HIF-1α and the overexpression of C-X-C motif chemokine receptor 4 (CXCR4) and nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB). Following the surgery, Garcia's grading scale was applied for neurological evaluation. Cerebral infarcts and injuries were visualized using 2,3,5-triphenyltetrazolium chloride and hematoxylin-eosin staining. The levels of tumor necrosis factor-α, Interleukin (IL)-6, IL-1ß, malondialdehyde, and 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine, were calculated via ELISA. MTT assay and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) assay kit were adopted to determine the viability and cytotoxicity of OGD/R-modeled cells. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation was evaluated using a 2'-7'dichlorofluorescin diacetate (DCFH-DA) probe. The levels of HIF-1α, CXCR4, and NF-κB p65 were quantified via Western blot and immunofluorescence, respectively. RESULTS: HIF-1α knockdown improved Garcia's score, attenuated the cerebral infarct, inflammation, and ROS generation, and alleviated the levels of inflammatory cytokines and CXCR4/NF-κB p65 in MCAO-modeled rats. Such effects were reversed following the overexpression of CXCR4 and NF-κB. Also, in OGD/R-treated HT22 cells, HIF-1α silencing diminished the cytotoxicity and ROS production and reduced the expressions of CXCR4/NF-κB p65, while promoting viability. However, CXCR4/NF-κB p65 overexpression did the opposite. CONCLUSION: HIF-1α knockdown alleviates inflammation and oxidative stress in IS through the CXCR4/NF-κB pathway.

Neonicotinoid insecticides (NNIs) are extensively utilized globally because of their efficient and broad-spectrum properties. However, their residues are also extensively distributed in the environment. Herein, MIL-101-SO3Na with abundant -NH- and sulfonate groups was synthesized via chloromethylation and nucleophilic substitution postmodification strategies and used to extract NNIs via solid-phase extraction. MIL-101-SO3Na was enhanced by introducing C-H···N hydrogen bonds to strengthen interaction forces and -SO3Na groups to adjust surface charge and enhance electrostatic attraction. This modification and the substantial specific surface area (998 m2·g-1) of the metal-organic framework markedly enhanced the enrichment efficiency of MIL-101. The proposed method based on MIL-101-SO3Na exhibited a minimal detection threshold (0.04-0.87 ng·L-1), an extensive linear spectrum (1-2000 ng·L-1), and notable accuracy (a variation of 3.02-11.8%) in water and drink samples. NNI concentrations between 0.25 and 24.2 ng·L-1 in fruit juice and tea samples were accurately identified using the proposed method, demonstrating its feasibility in practical applications. The postmodification of MIL-101-SO3Na is an exceptional and promising approach for the sensitive detection of ultratrace NNI levels in complex matrices.

Phosphorus concentration on the surface of seawater varies greatly with different environments, especially in coastal. The molecular mechanism by which cyanobacteria adapt to fluctuating phosphorus bioavailability is still unclear. In this study, transcriptomes and gene knockouts were used to investigate the adaptive molecular mechanism of a model coastal cyanobacterium Synechococcus sp. PCC 7002 during periods of phosphorus starvation and phosphorus recovery (adding sufficient phosphorus after phosphorus starvation). The findings indicated that phosphorus deficiency affected the photosynthesis, ribosome synthesis, and bacterial motility pathways, which recommenced after phosphorus was resupplied. Even more, most of the metabolic pathways of cyanobacteria were enhanced after phosphorus recovery compared to the control which was kept in continuous phosphorus replete conditions. Based on transcriptome, 54 genes potentially related to phosphorus-deficiency adaptation were selected and knocked out individually or in combination. It was found that five mutants showed weak growth phenotype under phosphorus deficiency, indicating the importance of the genes (A0076, A0549-50, A1094, A1320, A1895) in the adaptation of phosphorus deficiency. Three mutants were found to grow better than the wild type under phosphorus deficiency, suggesting that the products of these genes (A0079, A0340, A2284-86) might influence the adaptation to phosphorus deficiency. Bioinformatics analysis revealed that cyanobacteria exposed to highly fluctuating phosphorus concentrations have more sophisticated phosphorus acquisition strategies. These results elucidated that Synechococcus sp. PCC 7002 have variable phosphorus response mechanisms to adapt to fluctuating phosphorus concentration, providing a novel perspective of how cyanobacteria may respond to the complex and dynamic environments. BACKGROUND: Environmental endocrine disruptors (EEDs) are a class of new pollutants that are diffusely used in the medical industry and animal husbandry. In view of toxicity concerns, elevated levels of EEDs in the environment and food, which cause potential harm to human beings and ecosystems, must be monitored. Determination of EEDs contaminants to ensure environment and food safety has became a major concern worldwide, it is also a challenging task because of their trace level and probable matrices interference. Thus, developing rapid adsorption and efficient analysis methods for EEDs is apparently necessary. RESULTS: A magnetic conjugated micro-porous polymer (Fe3O4@TbDt) was designed and synthesized, which was endowed with large specific surface area, rich functional groups and magnetic responsiveness. The material showed high extraction efficiency for EEDs via magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE). The quantum chemistry calculations showed the adsorption mechanism of Fe3O4@TbDt on EEDs mainly included electrostatic interactions, van der waals forces (N-H … π interaction, C-H … π interaction), and multiple hydrogen bonds. Finally, a trace analysis method for nine EEDs was established combined with HPLC-MS/MS under optimized MSPE conditions. The method showed a good linearity (R2 ≥ 0.996), low limits of detection (0.25-5.1 ng L-1), high precision (RSD of 1.1-8.2 %, n = 6). The applicability of this method was investigated by analyzing four water samples and two dairy products, and satisfactory recovery rates (82.1-100.7 %) were obtained. The proposed method showed the potential for the analysis of EEDs residues in food and environmental samples. SIGNIFICANCE: The developed MSPE method based on conjugated micro-porous polymers (CMPs) is simple, green, and efficient compared to existing techniques. The application of CMPs provides a new idea for preparing versatile sample pre-treatment materials. What's more, this work has certain reference value for addressing of EEDs residues in the environment and food.

Background: Sleep is critical in health problems including Parkinson's disease (PD). This study examined the association between sleep characteristics and the likelihood of prodromal PD. Methods: At baseline examination of the Heart and Brain Investigation in Taicang (HABIT) study, potential PD biomarkers were obtained for 8777 participants aged over 50 years, and the probability of prodromal PD was assessed based on the Chinese expert consensus and Movement Disorder Society (MDS) criteria. General and component sleep characteristics were evaluated by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Median regression was applied to examine the association between sleep and the probability of prodromal PD, adjusting for age, sex, education level, physical activity, obesity, fast plasma glucose, lipids, and hypertension. Results: Based on China criteria, a higher level of PSQI score was significantly associated with a higher probability of prodromal PD (ß = 0.02, 95% CI: 0.01-0.03) and a higher risk of having an increased probability of prodromal PD (OR = 1.04, 95% CI: 1.02-1.05). Compared to participants with good quality sleep, those with poor quality sleep had a 0.07% increased probability of prodromal PD (95% CI: 0.01-0.13) and a 19% increased risk of having a high prodromal PD probability (95% CI: 1.04-1.20). Similar associations between sleep quality and the probability of prodromal PD were also observed using the MDS criteria. Subjective sleep quality, sleep latency, habitual sleep efficiency, daytime dysfunction, and use of sleep medications were also associated with the probability of prodromal PD. Conclusion: Poor sleep quality was associated with a high probability of prodromal PD. Sleep may be helpful for understanding and intervention of prodromal PD.

OBJECTIVES: The relationship between sleep and memory has been well documented. However, it remains unclear whether a mind-body exercise, i.e., Tai Chi exercise, can improve memory performance in older adults by improving their subjective and objective sleep. METHOD: A randomized controlled trial was conducted with participants (M = 67.36, 56-79 years) randomly assigned to Tai Chi and control groups. The primary outcomes were sleep, both subjectively reported and objectively assessed by actigraphy, and memory performance, as well as the mediating role of sleep in memory improvement with Tai Chi practice. RESULTS: Tai Chi exercise led to improvements in subjective sleep, as indicated by ISI (p < 0.001, Cohen's d = 0.62) and daytime dysfunction of the PSQI (p = 0.02, Cohen's d = 0.80), and in actigraphy-assessed sleep onset latency (p < 0.01, Cohen's d = 0.61), as well as improved memory performance on digit span forward (p < 0.001, Cohen's d = 1.20) and visual spatial memory tasks (p < 0.01, Cohen's d = 0.83) compared to the control group. Importantly, Tai Chi practice improved digit span forward memory performance through parallel mediation of both subjective sleep (i.e., daytime dysfunction of the PSQI) and objective sleep (i.e., sleep onset latency; b = 0.29, p < 0.01). DISCUSSION: Our findings uncovered the potential benefits of Tai Chi exercise in relation to both subjective and objective sleep in older adults, in turn, how sleep changes played a role in the link between Tai Chi exercise and memory changes in older adults.

Halogenation on the A unit of the D-π-A-type polymer donor has been proven as an effective strategy to improve the performance of organic solar cells (OSCs). Compared with fluorination, chlorination usually increases the open-circuit voltage because of the downward shift of energy levels, but decreases the charge transport ability due to the large steric hindrance of the chlorine atom. We reported herein a method to balance the energy loss and charge transport through asymmetric halogenation on the benzotriazole (BTA) unit of the polymer. The designed PE3-FCl based on the BTA unit containing fluorine and chlorine atoms rendered the highest power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 17.83% when eC9-2Cl-γ and o-xylene were used as the electron acceptor and solvent, respectively. The performance is obviously higher than that of the polymer PE3 containing a difluorinated BTA unit (16.65%) and polymer PE3-2Cl with dichlorinated BTA (14.65%) due to the manipulated morphology by preaggregation, improved and more balanced charge carrier transport, and reduced recombination loss. Notably, this PCE is a breakthrough for the BTA-based polymers processed by nonhalogenated solvent. This work gives deep insight into the asymmetric halogenation of polymer donors for high-performance green solvent-processed OSCs.

P2X receptors, a subfamily of ligand-gated ion channels activated by extracellular ATP, are implicated in various physiopathological processes, including inflammation, pain perception, and immune and respiratory regulations. Structural determinations using crystallography and cryo-EM have revealed that the extracellular three-dimensional architectures of different P2X subtypes across various species are remarkably identical, greatly advancing our understanding of P2X activation mechanisms. However, structural studies yield paradoxical architectures of the intracellular domain (ICD) of different subtypes (e.g., P2X3 and P2X7) at the apo state, and the role of the ICD in P2X functional regulation remains unclear. Here, we propose that the P2X3 receptor's ICD has an apo state conformation similar to the open state but with a less tense architecture, containing allosteric sites that influence P2X3's physiological and pathological roles. Using covalent occupancy, engineered disulfide bonds and voltage-clamp fluorometry, we suggested that the ICD can undergo coordinated motions with the transmembrane domain of P2X3, thereby facilitating channel activation. Additionally, we identified a novel P2X3 enhancer, PSFL77, and uncovered its potential allosteric site located in the 1α3ß domain of the ICD. PSFL77 modulated pain perception in P2rx3+/+, but not in P2rx3-/-, mice, indicating that the 1α3ß, a "tunable" region implicated in the regulation of P2X3 functions. Thus, when P2X3 is in its apo state, its ICD architecture is fairly ordered rather than an unstructured outward folding, enabling allosteric modulation of the signaling of P2X3 receptors.

OBJECTIVES: To analyse the prognostic factors for visual acuity in acute retinal necrosis (ARN) patients treated non-surgically. METHODS: The clinical data of ARN patients who visited our hospital from January 2010 to January 2023 were retrospectively analysed. RESULTS: Twenty-four patients (29 eyes) were included. Aqueous humour samples were collected from 20 out of 29 eyes, and PCR confirmed that 85% (17/20) of the eyes had VZV infection, 10% (2/20) had CMV infection, and 5% (1/20) had HSV infection. All patients were treated with intravenous antiviral agents. Intravitreal ganciclovir and oral corticosteroids were given according to the patients' wishes. A comparison of visual acuity at the time of first identification of inactive ARN with that at the first visit revealed that 16 (55.2%) eyes improved and 13 (44.8%) did not improve. Logistic regression analysis revealed that risk factors for failure to improve vision after treatment included retinal detachment (odds ratio [OR],33.75; 95% CI, 3.245-351.067; P = 0.003), necrotising retinitis involving the posterior pole (odds ratio [OR],8.167; 95% CI, 1.297-51.403, P = 0.025), and arteritis involving the large retinal arteries (odds ratio [OR],9.167; 95% CI, 1.493-56.297; P = 0.017). The VZV viral load in the aqueous humour at initial presentation was significantly associated with visual prognosis (r = 0.688, P = 0.013), retinal detachment (τ = 0.597, P = 0.021) and the extent of retinal necrosis (τ = 0.57, P = 0.027). The neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) of VZV-infected patients at first presentation was significantly correlated with the prognosis of visual acuity (r = 0.616, P = 0.033) and retinal detachment (τ = 0.728, P = 0.004). CONCLUSIONS: High NLR and viral DNA copy number in the aqueous humour at the initial presentation, as well as subsequent retinal detachment, necrotising retinitis involving the posterior pole, and arteritis involving the large retinal arteries were risk factors for poor visual prognosis in VZV-infected ARN patients.

While atomically precise metal nanoclusters (NCs) with unique structures and reactivity are very promising in catalysis, the spatial resistance caused by the surface ligands and structural instability poses significant challenges. In this work, Au25(Cys)18 NCs are encapsulated in multivariate metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to afford Au25@M-MOF-74 (M = Zn, Ni, Co, Mg). By the MOF confinement, the Au25 NCs showcase highly enhanced activity and stability in the intramolecular cascade reaction of 2-nitrobenzonitrile. Notably, the interaction between the metal nodes in M-MOF-74 and Au25(Cys)18 is able to suppress the free vibration of the surface ligands on the Au25 NCs and thereby improve the accessibility of Au sites; meanwhile, the stronger interactions lead to higher electron density and core expansion within Au25(Cys)18. As a result, the activity exhibits the trend of Au25@Ni-MOF-74 > Au25@Co-MOF-74 > Au25@Zn-MOF-74 > Au25@Mg-MOF-74, highlighting the crucial roles of microenvironment modulation around the Au25 NCs by interaction between the surface ligands and MOF hosts.

Flexible strain sensors have been widely used in wearable electronics. However, the fabrication of flexible strain sensors with a large strain detection range, high sensitivity, and negligible hysteresis remains a formidable challenge, even after enormous advancements in the field. Herein, a flexible microfluidic strain sensor was fabricated by filling poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrenesulfonate-MXene-gold (PEDOT:PSS-MXene-Au) nanocomposites into microchannels in an elastic matrix. Owing to the unique properties of the nanofiller and Ecoflex elastomer microchannel, the microfluidic strain sensor detected a strain of 0%-500% with low hysteresis (2.4%), high sensitivity (guage factor = 25.4), short response times (∼86 ms), and good durability. Moreover, the flexible microfluidic sensor was used to detect various physiological signals and human activities, control a mechanical hand, and capture hand motions in real time. As demonstrated by its good performance, the proposed flexible microfluidic sensor holds great potential in applications such as wearable electronics, physiological signal monitoring and human-machine interactions.

BACKGROUND: The traditional method of post-hospital intervention and guidance of stroke patients has some limitations. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of Internet + wearable device training on limb function recovery and the levels of serum neurocytokines (BDNF, NT-3, and NGF) in stroke patients. METHODS: 80 stroke patients with hemiplegia were randomly selected from the Department of Neurorehabilitation, Affiliated Rehabilitation Hospital of Chongqing Medical University. They were divided into a control group and an observation group, with 40 patients in each group. The control group received routine post-hospital follow-up guidance, while the observation group received Internet remote home rehabilitation guidance combined with wearable device training. The interventions were compared between the two groups. RESULTS: At 4 weeks and 12 weeks after discharge, the observation group showed higher scores on the Fugl-Meyer scale (FMA), Berg Balance Scale (BBS), modified Barthel Index (MBI), stride length, gait speed, gait frequency, and higher levels of BDNF, NT-3, and NGF. Additionally, the observation group had lower scores on the Hamilton Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The application of Internet remote home rehabilitation guidance combined with wearable device training in stroke patients with hemiplegia can improve limb function recovery. It effectively increases the levels of BDNF, NT-3, and NGF, promoting the nutritional repair of damaged nerves. These findings hold clinical significance.

In this study, we developed a wearable nanozyme-enzyme electrochemical biosensor that enablies sweat lactate monitoring. The biosensor comprises a flexible electrode system prepared on a polyimide (PI) film and the Janus textile for unidirectional sweat transport. We obtained favorable electrochemical activities for hydrogen peroxide reduction by modifying the laser-scribed graphene (LSG) electrode with cerium dioxide (CeO2)-molybdenum disulphide (MoS2) nanozyme and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). By further immobilisation of lactate oxidase (LOx), the proposed biosensor achieves chronoamperometric lactate detection in artificial sweat within a range of 0.1-50.0 mM, a high sensitivity of 25.58 µA mM-1cm-2 and a limit of detection (LoD) down to 0.135 mM, which fully meets the requirements of clinical diagnostics. We demonstrated accurate lactate measurements in spiked artificial sweat, which is consistent with standard ELISA results. To monitor the sweat produced by volunteers while exercising, we conducted on-body tests, showcasing the wearable biosensor's ability to provide clinical sweat lactate diagnosis for medical treatment and sports management.

RESUMEN

Organic transformation by light-driven catalysis, especially, photocatalysis and photothermal catalysis, denoted as photo(thermal) catalysis, is an efficient, green, and economical route to produce value-added compounds. In recent years, owing to their diverse structure types, tunable pore sizes, and abundant active sites, metal-organic framework (MOF)-based photo(thermal) catalysis has attracted broad interest in organic transformations. In this review, we provide a comprehensive and systematic overview of MOF-based photo(thermal) catalysis for organic transformations. First, the general mechanisms, unique advantages, and strategies to improve the performance of MOFs in photo(thermal) catalysis are discussed. Then, outstanding examples of organic transformations over MOF-based photo(thermal) catalysis are introduced according to the reaction type. In addition, several representative advanced characterization techniques used for revealing the charge reaction kinetics and reaction intermediates of MOF-based organic transformations by photo(thermal) catalysis are presented. Finally, the prospects and challenges in this field are proposed. This review aims to inspire the rational design and development of MOF-based materials with improved performance in organic transformations by photocatalysis and photothermal catalysis.

What is already known about this topic?: Brucellosis of the central nervous system (CNS) is rare and frequently fatal, often being overlooked or misdiagnosed. What is added by this report?: In April 2023, the Jinan CDC identified a case of CNS brucellosis in a 54-year-old woman through cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) culture. Upon confirming the diagnosis of brucellosis, the Jinan CDC immediately informed Qilu Hospital of Shandong University, to which the patient had been transferred, and she was subsequently tracked and successfully treated. What are the implications for public health practice?: The successful outcome can be attributed to the effective integration of a system that facilitated coordinated and collaborative actions between public health services and clinical institutions.

Objective: This study aims to analyze the awareness of influenza prevention and control and the behavioral attitudes toward the work among parents and staff in schools in Taicang City and the impact of the vaccination rate among students on influenza outbreaks in schools. The findings can provide references for the development of effective control strategies for the spread of influenza. Methods: An anonymous questionnaire survey was conducted on 10,962 students from 20 schools in Taicang City, with class as the unit of analysis. The survey investigated their awareness of influenza prevention and control, their attitudes, and the vaccination coverage. Results: From January to June 2023, a total of 388 influenza outbreaks were reported in schools in Taicang City, involving 77 schools. There were 3,475 confirmed cases, with an average infection rate of 18.53%. In schools where influenza outbreaks had occurred, the incidence rate of those who received influenza vaccine was significantly lower than those who did not, and the vaccine protection rate was 28.22%. The knowledge awareness rates of "the main transmission routes of influenza" and "influenza vaccination can prevent influenza" among parents of students were 95.49 and 93.16%, respectively. The differences between schools involved in the epidemic and non-epidemic were statistically significant (p < 0.05). The correct attitudes of parents toward "actively reporting relevant symptoms to teachers when their children show symptoms" and "avoiding classes with diseases when their children are suspected to be sick" are 98.80 and 96.26%, respectively. The differences between schools with and without epidemic are statistically significant (p < 0.05). The correct attitudes of the class teacher toward "correct management and control of students with flu like symptoms in the class" and "taking correct prevention and control measures in the event of a flu epidemic in the class" were 89.36 and 92.55%, respectively. The differences between epidemic related and non-epidemic related classes were statistically significant (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Enhance the knowledge level of influenza prevention and control among parents of students, Strengthening the training for class teachers in emergency response to infectious diseases and increasing vaccination coverage among students can effectively reduce the incidence of influenza and thereby the occurrence of cluster outbreaks in schools.

Photocatalytic overall water splitting holds great promise for solar-to-hydrogen conversion. Maintaining charge separation is a major challenge but is key to unlocking this potential. Here we discovered a metal-organic framework (MOF) that shows suppressed charge recombination. This MOF features electronically insulated Zn2+ nodes and two chemically equivalent, yet crystallographically independent, linkers. These linkers behave as an electron donor-acceptor pair with non-overlapping band edges. Upon photoexcitation, the MOF undergoes a dynamic excited-state structural twist, inducing orbital rearrangements that forbid radiative relaxation and thereby promote a long-lived charge-separated state. As a result, the MOF achieves visible-light photocatalytic overall water splitting, in the presence of co-catalysts, with an apparent quantum efficiency of 3.09 ± 0.32% at 365 nm and shows little activity loss in 100 h of consecutive runs. Furthermore, the dynamic excited-state structural twist is also successfully extended to other photocatalysts. This strategy for suppressing charge recombination will be applicable to diverse photochemical processes beyond overall water splitting.

Background: Evidence of an association between maternal use of anti-seizure medication (ASM) during pregnancy and the risk of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children is conflicting. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to summarize the relationship between fetal exposure to ASM and the development of ASD or ADHD in offspring. Methods: A comprehensive literature search was conducted in PubMed and other databases to identify relevant epidemiological studies published from inception until 1 March 2024. Results: Seven cohort studies were included in the meta-analysis. The results showed that maternal exposure to ASMs during pregnancy was associated with an increased risk of ASD [odds ratio (OR): 2.1, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.63-2.71; p < 0.001] in the general population. This association became weaker (ASD: OR: 1.38, 95% CI: 1.11-1.73; p = 0.004) when the reference group was mothers with a psychiatric disorder or epilepsy not treated during pregnancy. Furthermore, an increased risk of ADHD was observed when the study data adjusted for drug indications were pooled (OR: 1.43, 95% CI: 1.07-1.92; p = 0.015). In subgroup analyses based on individual ASM use, only exposure to valproate preconception was significantly associated with an increased risk of ASD or ADHD. Conclusion: The significant association between maternal ASM use during pregnancy and ASD or ADHD in offspring may be partially explained by the drug indication or driven by valproate.

BACKGROUND: Vascular health has been associated with cognition but related evidence is limited in Chinese. The objective of this study was to examine the association of vascular aging assessed by arterial stiffness and blood pressure with cognitive function in an unselected Chinese population. METHODS: In the Tianning Cohort (N = 5158), indicators of arterial stiffness and blood pressure including carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV), ankle-brachial index (ABI), pulse pressure (PP), systolic blood pressure (SBP), and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) were measured. Cognitive function was assessed using the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) questionnaire. We applied Poisson regression and logistic regression to examine the associations of vascular aging and blood pressure with cognitive function. RESULTS: 76 (1.47%) participants had impaired cognitive function diagnosed by a MMSE score of less than 24 points. Participants with a higher level of PP were more likely to have a decreased score of MMSE (ß=-0.0121, P < 0.001 for log-transformed pulse pressure) and a higher risk of having impaired cognitive function (OR = 5.95, 95%CI: 2.02-17.79, P < 0.001 for log-transformed PP). Per standard deviation increment in SBP was significantly associated with lower MMSE score (ß=-0.0020, P < 0.001) and impaired cognitive function (OR = 1.69, 95%CI: 1.38-2.06, P < 0.001). No significant associations were found regarding other parameters. CONCLUSIONS: Blood pressure and hypertension were associated with cognitive function in Chinese adults. PP may be a potential predictor for impaired cognitive function.
