RESUMEN

6-Gingerol (6-G), an active ingredient of ginger with anti-inflammation and anti-oxidation properties, can treat ulcerative colitis (UC). However, its underlying mechanism is still unclear. In this study, the pharmacodynamic evaluation of 6-G for treating UC was performed, and the mechanism of 6-G in ameliorating UC was excavated by plasma metabolomics and network pharmacology analysis, which was further validated by experimental and molecular docking. The results showed that 6-G could notably reduce diarrhea, weight loss, colonic pathological damage, and inflammation in UC mice. Plasma metabolomic results indicated that 6-G could regulate 19 differential metabolites, and its metabolic pathways mainly involved linoleic acid metabolism and arachidonic acid metabolism, which were closely associated with ferroptosis. Moreover, 60 potential targets for 6-G intervention on ferroptosis in UC were identified by network pharmacology, and enrichment analysis revealed that 6-G suppressed ferroptosis by modulating lipid peroxidation. Besides, the integration of metabolomics and network pharmacology showed that the regulation of 6-G on ferroptosis focused on 3 key targets, including ALOX5, ALOX15, and PTGS2. Further investigation indicated that 6-G significantly inhibited ferroptosis by decreasing iron load and malondialdehyde (MDA), and enhanced antioxidant capacity by reducing the content of glutathione disulfide (GSSG) and increasing the levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione (GSH) in UC mice and RSL3-induced Caco-2 cells. Furthermore, molecular docking showed the high affinity of 6-G with the identified 3 key targets. Collectively, this study elucidated the potential of 6-G in ameliorating UC by inhibiting ferroptosis. The integrated strategy also provided a theoretical basis for 6-G in treating UC.

Background: Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) has recently emerged as a critical support system for lung function in patients awaiting lung transplantation. This meta-analysis investigates the prognostic factors of lung transplantation following ECMO bridging therapy. Methods: A comprehensive search was conducted in PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, CINAHL, Web of Science, Scopus, and ProQuest databases from inception to August 11, 2023. Included were cohort or case-control studies focusing on prognostic factors of lung transplantation with ECMO bridging therapy. Data extraction was performed independently, and study quality was assessed. A meta-analysis was carried out using RevMan 5.4 and Stata17.0 software to aggregate mortality rates and pertinent prognostic factors of ECMO as a bridge to lung transplantation. Results: The search identified eight trials encompassing 1,086 participants. The prognosis of patients undergoing lung transplantation with ECMO bridging was significantly associated with several factors: prolonged ECMO support [odds ratio 1.07, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.02-1.12, I2=77%], deterioration in liver and kidney function (odds ratio 3.62, 95% CI: 2.37-5.54, I2=0%), and complications during ECMO (odds ratio 2.24, 95% CI: 1.45-3.44, I2=5%). Conclusions: Prolonged ECMO support, declining liver and kidney functions, and complications during ECMO are vital prognostic factors in lung transplantation following ECMO bridging therapy.

Carbon catabolite repression (CCR) is a highly conserved mechanism that regulates carbon source utilization in Streptomyces. CCR has a negative impact on secondary metabolite fermentation, both in industrial and research settings. In this study, CCR was observed in the daunorubicin (DNR)-producing strain Streptomyces coeruleorubidus DM, which was cultivated in high concentration of carbohydrates. Unexpectedly, DM exhibited a high ability for anthraquinone glucuronidation biotransformation under CCR conditions with a maximum bioconversion rate of 95% achieved at pH 6, 30°C for 24 h. The co-utilization of glucose and sucrose resulted in the highest biotransformation rate compared to other carbon source combinations. Three novel anthraquinone glucuronides were obtained, with purpurin-O-glucuronide showing significantly improved water solubility, antioxidant activity, and antibacterial bioactivity. Comparative transcript analysis revealed that glucose and sucrose utilization were significantly upregulated as DM cultivated under CCR condition, which strongly enhance the biosynthetic pathway of the precursors Uridine diphosphate glucuronic acid (UDPGA). Meanwhile, the carbon metabolic flux has significantly enhanced the fatty acid biosynthesis, the exhaust of acetyl coenzyme A may lead to the complete repression of the biosynthesis of DNR, Additionally, the efflux transporter genes were simultaneously downregulated, which may contribute to the anthraquinones intracellular glucuronidation. Overall, our findings demonstrate that utilizing CCR can be a valuable strategy for enhancing the biotransformation efficiency of anthraquinone O-glucuronides by DM. This approach has the potential to improve the bioavailability and therapeutic potential of these compounds, opening up new possibilities for their pharmaceutical applications.

Peach fruit is prone to chilling injury (CI) during low-temperature storage, resulting in quality deterioration and economic losses. Our previous studies have found that exogenous trehalose treatment can alleviate the CI symptoms of peach by increasing sucrose accumulation. The purpose of this study was to explore the potential molecular mechanism of trehalose treatment in alleviating CI in postharvest peach fruit. Transcriptome analysis showed that trehalose induced gene expression in pathways of plant MAPK signaling, calcium signaling, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) signaling. Furthermore, molecular docking analysis indicated that PpCDPK24 may activate the ROS signaling pathway by phosphorylating PpRBOHE. Besides, PpWRKY40 mediates the activation of PpMAPKKK2-induced ROS signaling pathway by interacting with the PpRBOHE promoter. Accordingly, trehalose treatment significantly enhanced the activities of antioxidant-related enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and gluathione reductase (GR), as well as the transcription levels AsA-GSH cycle related gene, which led to the reduction of H2O2 and malondialdehyde (MDA) content in peach during cold storage. In summary, our results suggest that the potential molecular mechanism of trehalose treatment is to enhance antioxidant capacity by activating CDPK-mediated Ca2 + -ROS signaling pathway and WRKY-mediated MAPK-WRKY-ROS signaling pathway, thereby reducing the CI in peach fruit.

Block H, located in western Hubei-eastern Chongqing, remains at a low exploration degree. Characterized by its complex structural attributes, the area presents adverse conditions such as a thin thickness of high-quality shale reservoir, rapid lateral formation occurrence, and poor stratigraphic correlation, challenging conventional geosteering methods. The primary shale gas reservoir in Block H corresponds to the Upper Permian Wujiaping Formation. To ensure that the shale gas horizontal wells in this block effectively penetrate high-quality gas reservoirs, this study delves into the geological characteristics of this stratigraphic unit, identifies principal challenges faced by current geosteering techniques, and introduces a tailored technical solution. This solution encompasses the application of real-time 3D geological modeling to track while drilling, identification of steering marker layers, optimization of steerable tools, and optimization of the steering trajectory while drilling. In the technology of optimization of the steering trajectory while drilling, a trajectory control calculation model based on the average angle technique was established for the first time. Additionally, a sectional control chart for marker layers and well inclination under different deflecting constraints was established. These methods have solved the problems of large error in target prediction and poor trajectory control effects by using the equal thickness method alone. The findings from this study can significantly enhance target prediction and trajectory control accuracy in complex structural areas, offering pivotal insights for the proficient development of analogous shale gas reservoirs in the future.

BACKGROUND: Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is identified as one of the most prevalent and malignant brain tumors, characterized by poor treatment outcomes and a limited prognosis. CMTM6, a membrane protein, has been found to upregulate the expression of programmed cell death 1 ligand 1 protein (PD-L1) and acts as an immune checkpoint inhibitor by inhibiting the programmed death 1 protein/PD-L1 signaling pathway. Recent research has demonstrated a high expression of CMTM6 in GBM, suggesting its potential role in influencing the pathogenesis and progression of GBM, as well as its association with immune cell infiltration in the tumor microenvironment. However, the underlying mechanism of CMTM6 in GBM requires further investigation. METHODS: Data from cancer patients in The Cancer Genome Atlas, Gene Expression Omnibus and Chinese Glioma Genome Atlas cohorts were consolidated for the current study. Through multi-omics analysis, the study systematically examined the expression profile of CMTM6, epigenetic modifications, prognostic significance, biological functions, potential mechanisms of action and alterations in the immune microenvironment. Additionally, the study investigated CMTM6 expression in GBM cell lines and normal cells using reverse transcription PCR and western blot analysis. The impact of CMTM6 on GBM cell proliferation, migration and invasion was evaluated using a combination of cell counting kit-8 assay, clone formation assay, 5-ethynyl-2'-deoxyuridine incorporation assay, wound healing assay and Transwell assay. In order to explore the mechanism of CMTM6, the Wnt/ß-catenin signaling pathway and autophagy-related genes were further verified through western blot analysis. RESULTS: CMTM6 is highly expressed in multiple tumors, particularly GBM. CMTM6 has been shown to be a valuable diagnostic and prognostic biomarker by various bioinformatics approaches. Additionally, CMTM6 plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of cancer, specifically GBM, by modulating various biological processes such as DNA methyltransferase expression, RNA modification, copy number variation, genomic heterogeneity, tumor stemness and DNA methylation. The findings of the experiment indicate a significant correlation between elevated CMTM6 expression and the proliferation, invasion, migration and autophagy of GBM cells, with potential key roles mediated through the Wnt/ß-catenin signaling pathway. Furthermore, CMTM6 is implicated in modulating tumor immune cell infiltration and is closely linked to the expression of various immune checkpoint inhibitors and immune modulators, particularly within the context of GBM. High levels of CMTM6 expression also enhance the responsiveness of GBM patients to radiotherapy and chemotherapy, thereby offering valuable insights for guiding treatment strategies for GBM. CONCLUSIONS: Autophagy-related CMTM6 is highly expressed in various types of cancer, especially GBM, and it can regulate GBM progression through the Wnt/ß-catenin signaling pathway and is capable of being used as an underlying target for the diagnosis, treatment selection and prognosis of patients with GBM.

Recently, visible-light-driven photocatalysis attracts much concerns in the remediation of environmental organic pollutants. In this study, the cerium doped biochar was fabricated through the hydrothermal method, and served as an efficient photocatalyst towards rhodamine B degradation under visible light irradiation. Almost 100% of rhodamine B was removed by 2.0 g·L-1 cerium doped biochar after 60 min of visible light irradiation at pH 3, but only about 25.50% and 29.60% of rhodamine B was removed by cerium dioxide and biochar under identical conditions. The degradation process coincided well with the pseudo-first-order kinetic model, and the photodegradation rate constant of cerium doped biochar was 0.0485·min-1, which was respectively 97 and 44 times that of biochar (0.0005·min-1) and cerium dioxide (0.0011·min-1). According to the trapping experiments and electron spin resonance spectroscopy analysis, h+, O2-∙ and ∙OH all participated in the degradation of rhodamine B in the cerium doped biochar photocatalytic systems, and the function of h+ and ∙OH was dominated. Consequently, the biochar could not only be an excellent carrier for supporting cerium dioxide, but also greatly improved its photocatalytic activity. The band gap of cerium doped biochar was narrower than cerium dioxide, which could improve the separation and migration of photogenerated electron-hole pairs under visible-light excitation, thus ultimately enhanced the degradation of rhodamine B. This work provided a deeper understanding of the preparation of biochar-based photocatalyst and its application in the remediation of environmental organic pollution.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Craniopharyngiomas originate from the pituitary stalk (PS) and extend along the pituitary-hypothalamic axis. Peripheral retroinfundibular craniopharyngiomas, particularly, may have worse surgery outcomes than other types. This study aims to investigate the advantage of using "one-and-a-half" interdural transcavernous pituitary transposition/rotation to dissect the tumor from the residual stalk and hypophyseal portal system for this subtype of craniopharyngioma. METHODS: From August 2018 to February 2023, patients with peripheral retroinfundibular craniopharyngioma underwent surgical treatment. We analyzed clinical information, surgical records, imaging, and examination findings. The surgical procedure, including "one-and-a-half" interdural transcavernous pituitary transposition and rotation, was explained. Postoperative follow-up included endocrinological tests, MRI examinations, and urination surveys. RESULTS: Among the 52 patients diagnosed with craniopharyngioma who underwent surgical treatment, 9 were classified as peripheral retroinfundibular craniopharyngioma, and they received "one-and-a-half" interdural transcavernous pituitary transposition and stalk rotation. In 6 cases, the residual PS and most of the hypophyseal portal system were preserved. Gross total resection was achieved in 5 patients and near total resection in 1 patient. One patient had a transection of the bilateral inferior hypophyseal arteries and 5 unilaterally. None experienced permanent diabetes insipidus, but varying degrees of anterior pituitary dysfunction postoperatively required hormone replacement therapy, which gradually decreased over time. CONCLUSION: The natural anatomic corridor, "one-and-a-half" interdural transcavernous pituitary transposition, and stalk rotation provide increased working space compared with intradural or extradural pituitary transposition. Simultaneously rotating the tumor and pituitary enables a specific attack angle for lesion dissection after the anteriorly displaced residual stalk is rotated laterally. This approach preserves the residual PS and hypophyseal portal system, avoiding complications of diabetes insipidus and hypopituitarism. In most cases, only one side of the inferior hypophyseal artery needs to be sacrificed, ensuring normal pituitary function.

BACKGROUND: To accurately assess the treatment effect of paclitaxel drug-coated balloon (DCB) angioplasty is essential for intracranial atherosclerotic disease (ICAD) patients. This study aimed to investigate the clinical feasibility of high-resolution vessel wall MRI (HR-VWI) in assessing ICAD with DCB angioplasty. METHODS: Forty-five patients with intracranial atherosclerotic stenosis ≥ 70% confirmed by digital subtraction angiography (DSA) underwent HR-VWI before and after DCB angioplasty. Postoperative follow-up was performed after 6 months (±1 month). The differences of pre- and postoperative HR-VWI characteristics, including vessel and lumen area at maximal lumen narrowing (MLN), plaque area and length, degree of stenosis, plaque burden (PB), remodeling index, and plaque enhancement amplitude (PEA) were compared. The relationship between stenotic rate obtained using HR-VWI and DSA was evaluated. Each HR-VWI characteristic and clinical factor before DCB angioplasty was separately evaluated for the association with postoperative restenosis. RESULTS: After six months, lumen area of MLN, plaque length and area, degree of stenosis, PB, and PEA showed a significantly difference relative to the value before DCB angioplasty (all P < 0.05). Spearman correlation coefficients of 0.865 and 0.932 were revealed between DSA and HR-VWI regarding the stenotic rate analysis pre- and post-operation (both P < 0.05). ROC analysis showed PEA, plaque length, and PB before DCB angioplasty separately provided robust prediction of postoperative restenosis (area under the curve = 0.909, 0.814 and 0.743; all P < 0.05). Multivariable analysis revealed that PEA was an independent predictor of prognosis. CONCLUSIONS: The HR-VWI can accurately assess the treatment effect of DCB and robustly predict prognosis.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGY RELEVANCE: Traditional herbal medicines have been considered as a novel and effective way to treat many diseases. Lizhong decoction (LZD), a classical prescription composed of Zingiber officinale Rosc., Panax ginseng C. A. Mey., Atractylodes macrocephala Koidz., and Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch., has been used to treat gastrointestinal disorders in clinical practices for thousands of years. However, the mechanism of LZD in alleviating ulcerative colitis (UC) is still unclear. AIM OF THE STUDY: The purpose of this study was to clarify the potential molecular mechanism of LZD in improving UC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The amelioration of LZD on dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced UC mice was evaluated by body weight, colon length, pathology of colon tissues, pro-inflammatory cytokines, and intestinal tight junction (TJ) proteins. Moreover, the gene expression profiles of UC patients were extracted to investigate potential pathological mechanisms of UC. The influence of LZD on ferroptosis was analyzed by iron load, malondialdehyde (MDA), and the expression of ferroptosis-associated proteins. Meanwhile, the inhibition of LZD on oxidative stress (OS) was assessed by the superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, as well as the expression levels of glutathione (GSH) and glutathione disulfide (GSSG). Furthermore, the influence of LZD on ferroptosis was assessed by inhibiting nuclear factor (erythroid-derived-2)-like 2 (Nrf2). RESULTS: LZD showed significant therapeutic effects in UC mice, including reduction of intestinal injury and inflammation. Moreover, LZD treatment notably upregulated the expression of TJ proteins. Further investigation indicated that LZD significantly inhibited the ferroptosis of enterocytes by decreasing iron load and MDA, and increasing the expression levels of solute carrier family 7 member 11 (SLC7A11) and glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) in colon tissues. Furthermore, the decreased activity of SOD, reduced level of GSH, and increased content of GSSG in UC mice were notably reversed by LZD. Consistent with in vivo results, LZD could markedly inhibit ferroptosis and OS in RSL3-induced Caco-2 cells. Mechanistically, LZD alleviated ferroptosis by suppressing OS through the activation of Nrf2 signaling. CONCLUSIONS: Collectively, LZD remarkably improved intestinal pathological injury in UC mice, and its potential mechanism was the suppression of ferroptosis in enterocytes by the Nrf2/SLC7A11/GPX4 pathway.

Mammography remains the primary screening strategy for breast cancer, which continues to be the most prevalent cancer diagnosis among women globally. Because screening mammograms capture both the left and right breast, there is a nonnegligible correlation between the pair of images. Previous studies have explored the concept of averaging between the pair of images after proper image registration; however, no comparison has been made in directly utilizing the paired images. In this paper, we extend the bivariate functional principal component analysis over triangulations to jointly characterize the pair of imaging data bounded in an irregular domain and then nest the extracted features within the survival model to predict the onset of breast cancer. The method is applied to our motivating data from the Joanne Knight Breast Health Cohort at Siteman Cancer Center. Our findings indicate that there was no statistically significant difference in model discrimination performance between averaging the pair of images and jointly modeling the two images. Although the breast cancer study did not reveal any significant difference, it is worth noting that the methods proposed here can be readily extended to other studies involving paired or multivariate imaging data.

Introduction: The contamination of dental unit waterlines (DUWLs) poses a significant risk of cross-infection in dentistry. Although chemical disinfectants have been effective in reducing number of bacteria, they do have limitations. Methods: This study aimed to investigate the potential of chlorogenic acid, a natural substance with broadspectrum antibacterial properties, for treating DUWLs. Over a period of three months, we analyzed the microbial communities in 149 DUWLs samples collected from 5 dental units using high-throughput pyrophosphate sequencing. Results: The results revealed that chlorogenic acid treatment had a significant impact on the microbial community profile in the DUWLs, with the most significant changes occurring within the first 15 days and stabilization observed in the last 30 days. The predominant genera detected in the samples were Bacteroides, Lactobacillus, Streptococcus, Methylobacterium, and Phreatobacter. Additionally, the relative abundance of certain beneficial bacteria, such as Alloprevotella, Roseburia, and Blautia, increased, while the presence of opportunistic pathogens like Mycobacteria significantly decreased. The functional prediction analysis using the KEGG database indicated a decrease in the pathogenicity of the bacterial community in the DUWLs following chlorogenic acid treatment. Discussion: This study introduces a novel approach for the prevention and treatment of infections associated with dental care.

In this Letter, a method for the fabrication of bifocal lenses is presented by combining surface ablation and bulk modification in a single laser exposure followed by the wet etching processing step. The intensity of a single femtosecond laser pulse was modulated axially into two foci with a designed computer-generated hologram (CGH). Such pulse simultaneously induced an ablation region on the surface and a modified volume inside the fused silica. After etching in hydrofluoric acid (HF), the two exposed regions evolved into a bifocal lens. The area ratio (diameter) of the two lenses can be flexibly adjusted via control of the pulse energy distribution through the CGH. Besides, bifocal lenses with a center offset as well as convex lenses were obtained by a replication technique. This method simplifies the fabrication of micro-optical elements and opens a highly efficient and simple pathway for complex optical surfaces and integrated imaging systems.

Many researchers have explored the potential association between one neurosurgical disease and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), but few systematically analyzed the association and causality between COVID-19 and various neurosurgical diseases. A Mendelian randomization analysis was conducted to evaluate the causal association between COVID-19 (including critically ill COVID-19, hospitalized COVID-19, and respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection) and 30 neurosurgical diseases within European populations. The consequences of inverse variance weighted models suggest that genetic susceptibility of critically ill COVID-19 may increase the risk of cerebral infarction (odds ratio [OR] = 1.02; p-value = 0.006), genetic susceptibility of SARS-CoV-2 infection may increase the risk of stroke (OR = 1.02; p-value = 0.047), and conversely, genetic susceptibility of hospitalized COVID-19 may reduce the risk of pituitary adenoma and craniopharyngioma (OR = 0.90; p-value = 0.032). In addition, evidences revealed potential associations between genetic susceptibility of COVID-19 and spinal stenosis (OR = 1.03; p-value = 0.028), diffuse brain injury (OR = 1.21; p-value = 0.040) and focal brain injury (OR = 1.12; p-value = 0.040). By testing for heterogeneity and pleiotropy, the above causal conclusions are robust. In summary, our analysis shows that COVID-19 has an independent and powerful causal influence on multiple neurosurgical disorders.

RESUMEN

Substantial evidence has recently been gathered to substantiate the epidemiological correlation between this oral inflammatory ailment and several systemic health disorders, such as cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). It is worth noting that certain shared factors exist among individuals with periodontal disease (PD) and CVDs, like obesity or overweight, minimal physical activities, smoking habits, male gender, low socioeconomic position, advanced age, and limited educational attainment. Moreover, recent research suggests a distinct and separate relationship between PD and CVDs. This literature review discusses the association between CVDs and PD and their underlying mechanisms and connections. Current literature strongly confirms a correlation between cardiovascular risk and PD. The underlying mechanisms involve inflammation, epigenetics, epithelial dysfunction, oral microbiome dysbiosis, and the efficacy of periodontitis treatment. Future investigations are required to comprehend these complex interactions and develop targeted interventions for oral health improvement and reduction in cardiovascular risk.

PURPOSE: To identify dietary factors that are related to premature aging in adult survivors of childhood cancer, we examined the associations between plant food intakes and age-related deficit accumulation. METHODS: A total of 3,322 childhood cancer survivors (age 18-65 years, mean = 31, standard deviation = 8.4) in the St Jude Lifetime Cohort had total fruit, total vegetables and subgroups, whole grains, refined grains, nuts/seeds, and nutrients intake assessed using a food frequency questionnaire. Premature aging at baseline was assessed by the deficit accumulation index (DAI) and categorized as low, medium, and high risk. Multinomial logistic regressions (reference: low risk) adjusting for confounders estimated odds ratios (ORs) and 95% CIs. Multivariable linear regression of a continuous intake against a continuous DAI was also performed. RESULTS: Dark green vegetable (ORhigh v low = 0.47 [95% CI, 0.28 to 0.78] per 1/2 cup/1,000 kcal increment) and nuts/seeds intakes (ORhigh v low = 0.71 [95% CI, 0.47 to 1.08] per 1 oz/1,000 kcal increment; coefficientlinear = -0.0115, P = .02) were associated with a lower risk of premature aging. Conversely, refined grain intake was related to an increased risk of premature aging (ORhigh v low = 1.33 [95% CI, 0.99 to 1.78], per 1 oz/1,000 kcal increment; coefficientlinear = 0.0093, P = .005). Fruit and whole grain intakes were not associated with premature aging risk. Among nutrients abundant in plant foods, dietary folate intake was associated with a lower risk of premature aging (ORhigh v low = 0.89 [95% CI, 0.80 to 0.99] per 50 mcg/1,000 kcal increase). Beta-carotene, lutein/zeaxanthin, and vitamin E intakes from foods were also related to a modestly lower, but not statistically significant, risk of premature aging. CONCLUSION: Specific plant foods are associated with lower risk of premature aging, providing targets for the interventions to promote healthy aging in childhood cancer survivors.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the specific dietary patterns in adult survivors of childhood cancer. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to identify dietary patterns specific to childhood cancer survivors and examine their associations with sociodemographic and lifestyle factors. METHODS: Adult survivors of childhood cancer (mean:31 ± 8 y; n = 3022) and noncancer controls (n = 497) in the St. Jude Lifetime Cohort self-reported diet over the past 12 mo using a validated food frequency questionnaire. Factor analysis with 48 predefined food groups was performed to identify foods consumed together. Subsequently, cluster analysis with energy-adjusted factor scores was used to categorize survivors into a mutually exclusive dietary pattern. Dietary patterns were the primary outcomes. Multivariable multinomial logistic regressions were used to cross-sectionally examine associations between sociodemographic and lifestyle factors and dietary patterns in cancer survivors. RESULTS: Among the 4 dietary patterns identified, the fast-food pattern (36 %) was the most common, followed by the Western contemporary (30 %), the plant-based (20 %), and the animal-based (14 %) patterns in childhood cancer survivors. By contrast, the plant-based (38 %) and fast-food patterns (29 %) were prevalent in controls. In survivors, male sex, younger age, lower educational attainment, and physical inactivity were associated with the fast-food, Western contemporary, or animal-based pattern. Compared with non-Hispanic White survivors consuming the plant-based diet, non-Hispanic Black survivors were 2-5 times more likely to consume the fast-food [odds ratio (OR:= 2.76; 95 % CI: 1.82, 4.18) or the animal-based diet (OR: 5.61; 95 % CI: 3.58, 8.78)]. Moreover, survivors residing in the most deprived area were 2-3 times more likely to consume the fast-food, Western contemporary, or animal-based diet. CONCLUSIONS: Unhealthy dietary patterns are prevalent in adult survivors of childhood cancer, especially those with lower socioeconomic status and racial minorities. Interventions to improve diet and health in childhood cancer survivors need to concurrently address disparities that contribute to adherence to healthy dietary practices. Creating different pore environments within a covalent organic framework (COF) will lead to useful multicompartment structure and multiple functions, which however has been scarcely achieved. Herein we report designed synthesis of three two-dimensional COFs with amphiphilic porosity by steric-hindrance-mediated precision hydrophilic-hydrophobic microphase separation. Dictated by the different steric effect of the substituents introduced to a monomer, dual-pore COFs with kgm net, in which all hydroxyls locate in trigonal micropores while hydrophobic sidechains exclusively distribute in hexagonal mesopores, have been constructed to form completely separated hydrophilic and hydrophobic nanochannels. The unique amphiphilic channels in the COFs enable the formation of Janus membranes via interface growth. This work has realized the creation of two types of channels with opposite properties in one COF, demonstrating the feasibility of introducing different properties/functions into different pores of heteropore COFs, which can be a useful strategy to develop multifunctional materials.
