RESUMEN

Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) is a key ingredient for various 2D van der Waals heterostructure devices, but the exact role of h-BN encapsulation in relation to the internal defects of 2D semiconductors remains unclear. Here, it is reported that h-BN encapsulation greatly removes the defect-related gap states by stabilizing the chemisorbed oxygen molecules onto the defects of monolayer WS2 crystals. Electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) combined with theoretical analysis clearly confirms that the oxygen molecules are chemisorbed onto the defects of WS2 crystals and are fixated by h-BN encapsulation, with excluding a possibility of oxygen molecules trapped in bubbles or wrinkles formed at the interface between WS2 and h-BN. Optical spectroscopic studies show that h-BN encapsulation prevents the desorption of oxygen molecules over various excitation and ambient conditions, resulting in a greatly lowered and stabilized free electron density in monolayer WS2 crystals. This suppresses the exciton annihilation processes by two orders of magnitude compared to that of bare WS2 . Furthermore, the valley polarization becomes robust against the various excitation and ambient conditions in the h-BN encapsulated WS2 crystals.

RESUMEN

Sulfuric acid, a constituent of lead-acid batteries, is an extremely hazardous substance, necessitating utmost caution. Unfortunately, many workers that utilize battery-operated equipment remain unaware of the potential exposure. This study aims to evaluate the potential exposure to sulfuric acid among workers employed by small companies associated with the operation of floor cleaning equipment powered by lead-acid batteries. Only cleaning equipment (hand-push and ride-on types) that required supplementation of lead-acid batteries with distilled water were targeted. Exposure measurement and analysis were performed according to the guidelines of NIOSH and including personal sampling and stationary sampling on the equipment. Exposure measurements indicated that workers were exposed to sulfuric acid. Additionally, the concentration level was slightly elevated in the stationary samples compared to personal samples. This study affirms that workers can experience exposure to sulfuric acid, even in the absence of direct handling of the substance. Consequently, there is a need to recognize and mitigate the potential risks.

RESUMEN

Over the last decade, highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) has severely affected poultry production systems across the globe. In particular, massive pre-emptive depopulation of all poultry within a certain distance has raised concerns regarding animal welfare and food security. Thus, alternative approaches to reducing unnecessary depopulation, such as risk-based depopulation, are highly demanded. This paper proposes a data-driven method to generate a rule table and risk score for each farm to identify preventive measures against HPAI. To evaluate the proposed method, 105 cases of HPAI occurring in a total of 381 farms in Jeollanam-do from 2014 to 2023 were evaluated. The accuracy of preventive measure identification was assessed for each case using both the conventional culling method and the proposed data-driven method. The evaluation showed that the proposed method achieved an accuracy of 84.19%, significantly surpassing the previous 10.37%. The result was attributed to the proposed method reducing the false-positive rate by 83.61% compared with the conventional method, thereby enhancing the reliability of identification. The proposed method is expected to be utilized in selecting farms for monitoring and management of HPAI.

RESUMEN

This paper deals with the practical application of Radar Cross Section (RCS) reduction technology using plasma. Although various plasma application technologies for RCS reduction have been studied, there are still many issues to be addressed for practical implementation. In order to achieve actual application, the discharge should be sustained regardless of the external environment of the aircraft. It is also important to investigate the actual plasma parameters to determine the expected RCS reduction effect. Building upon previous studies that optimized the electrodes for RCS reduction, this study fabricates a Dielectric Barrier Discharge (DBD) source suitable for dynamic environments and verifies the power consumption during one cycle of plasma generation. The obtained results are expected to contribute to the optimization of DBD electrodes for plasma RCS reduction.

RESUMEN

In this study, the problems encountered in radar cross-section (RCS) measurement experiments utilizing a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma system are examined and an effective solution is proposed. A DBD plasma system generates heat due to the high bias voltage required for plasma generation. The thermal-induced structural deformation of the DBD structure caused by this high voltage and its impact on RCS measurements are analyzed. In addition, techniques for minimizing the thermal-induced deformation and compensation methods for addressing the minimized deformation are proposed. Furthermore, RCS measurements are conducted on two kinds of DBD structures using the proposed method to experimentally demonstrate the improved agreement between the simulation and measurement results. For both structures, the RCS experimental results are in very good agreement with the simulation results, which enables accurate plasma characterization. In conclusion, it can be expected that the proposed method can be used to provide more accurate RCS measurements on various DBD structures that generate high heat.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Thread lifting is a common procedure in minimally invasive esthetic techniques and can also be used to raise the drooping soft tissue of the forehead by vertically inserting threads into the forehead. AIMS: This study aimed to examine the effect of forehead thread lifting on enhancing upper eyelid opening. METHODS: Fifteen patients were included in this study, all of whom underwent eyebrow thread lifting with MINT LIFT® UP. Photographs of the patients were taken before, immediately after, and 1 and 12 weeks after surgery. Changes in the position of the eyebrows and eyelids were measured. The paired t-test was used to determine the statistical significance of differences. RESULTS: At 1 week after surgery, the eyebrows were at a lower level compared with before surgery, and no significant changes in eye-opening were observed. However, at 12 weeks after surgery, the eyebrows and upper eyelids were both significantly elevated when compared to the preoperative state. CONCLUSIONS: Eyebrow lifting can be performed using multidirectional thread lifting.

RESUMEN

An eight-year-old Maltese dog presented with diarrhea and anorexia. Ultrasonography revealed marked focal wall thickening with loss of layering in the distal ileum. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) revealed a preserved wall layer with hypoattenuating middle wall thickening. In some segments of the lesion, small nodules protruding toward the mesentery from the outer layer were observed. Histopathology revealed focal lipogranulomatous lymphangitis (FLL) with lymphangiectasia. This is the first report to describe the CT features of FLL in a dog. CT features of preserved wall layers with hypoattenuating middle wall thickening and small nodules can assist in diagnosing FLL in dogs.

RESUMEN

To investigate the optimal scanning parameters of dual-energy computed tomography (DECT), which can accurately determine sensitivity (the detectability of urinary stones) and accuracy (the composition matching of urinary stones), and to apply them to clinical trials. Fifteen urinary stones were chemically analyzed, and their chemical compositions were considered a reference standard with which we compared the uric acid (UA) and non-UA compositions determined using DECT. The urinary stones were placed inside a bolus and scanned with a dual-source CT scanner under various selected dual-energy conditions (A to X) using various solid water phantom thicknesses. These datasets were analyzed using the Siemens syngo.via software tool (integrated into the CT system) for matching the sensitivity and accuracy assessments. This study showed that 80% of the highest sensitivity (detection of urinary stones) and 92% of the highest accuracy (composition matching of urinary stones) were achieved under condition A (a collimation beam width setting of 2 × 32 × 0.6 mm, an automatic exposure control setting of 80/sn140 peak kilovoltage, and a slice thickness of 0.5/0.5 mm) (P < 0.05). Application of the DECT energy parameters presented in the study will help identify the sensitivity and accuracy of UA and non-UA stone analysis, even in patients with small-sized urinary stones and in conditions difficult for analysis.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To investigate typical computed tomography (CT) features for the differentiation of vaginal from the uterine origin in dogs. ANIMALS: 7 healthy Beagles in the prospective study and 5 bitches in the retrospective study. PROCEDURES: In the prospective study, dual-phase CT images were obtained from sexually intact female Beagles (n = 7) during anestrus and estrus. On the CT images, the vagina and uterine horns, body, and cervix were assessed for diameter, attenuation, and contrast enhancement pattern. In the retrospective study, CT features of large vaginal lesions (leiomyoma, leiomyosarcoma, adenocarcinoma, hematocolpos, and Gartner's duct cyst) were assessed in 5 bitches. RESULTS: In normal bitches, the cervix was thicker with strong central enhancement compared to the uterus and vagina. The uterine artery, which enters the mesometrium at the level of the cervix, was clearly visualized and assisted in identifying the cervix. In bitches with large vaginal masses, uterine arteries were displaced by the lesions and could not be used to locate the cervix. In 4/5 dogs with vaginal masses, identification of the cervix allowed the determination of the organ of origin. In 1 dog with adenocarcinoma, CT vaginography was additionally required for determining the origin of mass. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results from this study indicate that the cervix, recognized in CT as focal thickening of the uterus with central enhancement, may be used as a landmark for the differentiation between the uterus and vagina in bitches.

RESUMEN

Using a catalyst-free one-pot polycondensation approach, a new donor-acceptor (D-A) based porous polyimide (PeTt-POP) photocatalyst was developed. PeTt-POP produced CH4 (125.63 ppm g-1 in 6 h) from CO2 under visible light irradiation in the gas-solid mode without the use of co-catalysts or sacrificial agents. The progress of the reaction and the corresponding intermediate species involved in the CO2 reduction were identified by operando DRIFTS experiments, from which a plausible reaction mechanism was proposed.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Hyperphosphatemia occurs frequently in end-stage renal disease patients on hemodialysis and is associated with increased mortality. Hyperphosphatemia contributes to vascular calcification in these patients, but there is emerging evidence that it is also associated with endothelial cell dysfunction. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study in hypertensive hemodialysis patients. We obtained pre-hemodialysis measurements of total peripheral resistance index (TPRI, non-invasive cardiac output monitor) and plasma levels of endothelin-1 (ET-1) and asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA). We ascertained the routine peridialytic blood pressure (BP) measurements from that treatment and the most recent pre-hemodialysis serum phosphate levels. We used generalized linear regression analyses to determine independent associations between serum phosphate with BP, TPRI, ET-1, and ADMA while controlling for demographic variables, parathyroid hormone (PTH), and interdialytic weight gain. RESULTS: There were 54 patients analyzed. Mean pre-HD supine and seated systolic and diastolic BP were 164 (27), 158 (21), 91.5 (17), and 86.1 (16) mmHg. Mean serum phosphate was 5.89 (1.8) mg/dL. There were significant correlations between phosphate with all pre-hemodialysis BP measurements (r = 0.3, p = .04; r = 0.4, p = .002; r = 0.5, p < .0001; and r = 0.5, p = .0003.) The correlations with phosphate and TPRI, ET-1, and ADMA were 0.3 (p = .01), 0.4 (p = .007), and 0.3 (p = .04). In our final linear regression analyses controlling for baseline characteristics, PTH, and interdialytic weight gain, independent associations between phosphate with pre-hemodialysis diastolic BP, TPRI, and ET-1 were retained (ß = 4.33, p = .0002; log transformed ß = 0.05, p = .005; reciprocal transformed ß = -0.03, p = .047). CONCLUSIONS: Serum phosphate concentration is independently associated with higher pre-HD BP, vasoconstriction, and markers of endothelial cell dysfunction. These findings demonstrate an additional negative impact of hyperphosphatemia on cardiovascular health beyond vascular calcification. TRIAL REGISTRATION: The study was part of a registered clinical trial, NCT01862497 (May 24, 2013).

RESUMEN

Alkaline water electrolysis (AWE) refers to a representative water electrolysis technology that applies electricity to synthesize hydrogen gas without the production of carbon dioxide. The ideal polymer electrolyte membranes for AWE should be capable of transporting hydroxide ions (OH-) quickly in harsh alkaline environments at increased temperatures. However, there has not yet been any desirable impedance measurement method for estimating hydroxide ions' conduction behavior across the membranes, since their impedance spectra are significantly affected by connection modes between electrodes and membranes in the test cells and the impedance evaluation environments. Accordingly, the measurement method suitable for obtaining precise hydroxide ion conductivity values through the membranes should be determined. For this purpose, Zirfon®, a state-of-the-art AWE membrane, was adopted as the standard membrane sample to perform the impedance measurement. The impedance spectra were acquired using homemade test cells with different electrode configurations in alkaline environments, and the corresponding hydroxide ion conductivity values were determined based on the electrochemical spectra. Furthermore, a modified four-probe method was found as an optimal measurement method by comparing the conductivity obtained under alkaline conditions.

RESUMEN

A conjugated polymer particle in an aqueous phase is covalently networked in 3D by crosslinking with azide groups, leading to significantly enhanced activity-a high photocatalytic H2 evolution rate (11 024 µmol g-1 h-1 (λ > 420 nm)) and a high apparent quantum yield (up to 0.8%). The reaction between the photoactive azide and the alkyl chains of the conjugated polymer provides more intact intermolecular polymeric interactions in the colloidal state, thus preventing physical swelling and inhibiting the recombination of photoproduced carriers. The covalent network efficiently promotes exciton diffusion, which greatly facilitates charge separation and transfer. The azide photo-crosslinking also leads to more compact and better-packed nanoparticles in the aqueous phase and efficient transfer of excitons to the outer surface of the nanoparticles, where photocatalytic reactions occur. These results show that photo-crosslinking can suppress the adverse effects of alkyl chains which inhibit photocatalytic performance. Therefore, covalent crosslinking is a promising strategy for the development of solar and hydrogen energy.

RESUMEN

This paper proposes a post-processing method called bidirectional interpolation method for sampling-based path planning algorithms, such as rapidly-exploring random tree (RRT). The proposed algorithm applies interpolation to the path generated by the sampling-based path planning algorithm. In this study, the proposed algorithm is applied to the path created by RRT-connect and six environmental maps were used for the verification. It was visually and quantitatively confirmed that, in all maps, not only path lengths but also the piecewise linear shape were decreased compared to the path generated by RRT-connect. To check the proposed algorithm's performance, visibility graph, RRT-connect algorithm, Triangular-RRT-connect algorithm and post triangular processing of midpoint interpolation (PTPMI) were compared in various environmental maps through simulation. Based on these experimental results, the proposed algorithm shows similar planning time but shorter path length than previous RRT-like algorithms as well as RRT-like algorithms with PTPMI having a similar number of samples.

RESUMEN

To identify the dietary composition and characteristics of both Adélie (Pygoscelis adeliae) and Emperor (Aptenodytes forsteri) penguins at four breeding sites, we performed stable carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) isotope analysis of down samples taken from penguin chicks. Adélie Penguin chicks at Cape Hallett mostly fed on Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba; 65.5 ± 3.5%), a reflection of the prevalence of that species near Cape Hallett, and no significant differences were noted between 2017 and 2018. However, Adélie Penguin chicks at Inexpressible Island, located near Terra Nova Bay, fed on both Antarctic silverfish (Pleuragramma antarctica; 42.5%) and ice krill (Euphausia crystallorophias; 47%), reflecting the high biomass observed in Terra Nova Bay. Meanwhile, no significant difference was noted between the two breeding sites of the Emperor Penguin. Emperor Penguin chicks predominantly fed on Antarctic silverfish (74.5 ± 2.1%) at both breeding sites (Cape Washington and Coulman Island), suggesting that diet preference represents the main factor influencing Emperor Penguin foraging. In contrast, the diet of the Adélie Penguin reflects presumed regional differences in prey prevalence, as inferred from available survey data.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the efficacy of a phospholipid-stabilized sulfur hexafluoride microsphere (SHM) contrast agent and water for hydrosonography of the upper portion of the gastrointestinal tract of dogs. ANIMALS: 12 healthy adult Beagles. PROCEDURES: In a crossover study, each dog was anesthetized and underwent noncontrast ultrasonography then hydrosonography following administration of tap water (30 mL/kg) without (water method) or with SHM (0.1 mL; SHM method) via an orogastric tube. There were at least 3 days between hydrosonographic procedures. Wall thickness, wall layer definition, conspicuity of the mucosal-luminal interface, and image quality were evaluated separately in the near and far fields for the gastric cardia, body, and pylorus and descending duodenum and compared among the 3 scanning methods. RESULTS: Mean wall thickness measurements did not differ significantly between the water and SHM methods at any location except the far-field gastric cardia where the mean wall thickness for the SHM method was less than that for the water method. In general, the SHM method improved wall layer definition and conspicuity of the mucosal-luminal interface of structures in the near field, compared with noncontrast method. The water and SHM methods both resulted in superior image quality relative to the noncontrast method for the near-field gastric cardia, far-field gastric cardia, and far-field duodenum. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results indicated that, for dogs, gastrointestinal hydrosonography by use of the SHM method improved wall layer definition and mucosal conspicuity, particularly in near-field images of the upper portion of the gastrointestinal tract.

RESUMEN

The mitogenome of Myuroclada maximowiczii (GenBank accession number MT834960) has a total length of 104,216 bp and encodes 40 protein-coding genes, three ribosomal RNAs, and 24 transfer RNAs. The overall nucleotide composition is asymmetric (29.6% A, 29.4% T, 21.2% G, and 19.8% C), with AT content (59.0%) higher than GC content (41.0%). The gene arrangement of this mitogenome is identical to that in other bryophytes. Phylogenetic trees were constructed using complete mitochondrial genome sequences of 24 bryophytes publicly available in GenBank and the mitogenome sequence derived in this study. Our phylogenetic analysis revealed that M. maximowiczii clustered in a clade with other hypnalean taxas.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To investigate radiographic variables for correlation with splenic size as estimated with CT in cats. ANIMALS: 38 healthy adult cats. PROCEDURES: The width and height of the splenic head and total length, segmental length, and width of the spleen were measured on radiographic and CT images obtained from 10 cats in prospective, exploratory experiments. Distance between the splenic head and left kidney, anatomic locations of the head and tail of the spleen, and CT-derived splenic volume were also assessed. Correlation and agreement between radiographic and CT measurements and interobserver agreement for measurements with each method were determined. A retrospective evaluation of radiographs obtained without sedation or anesthesia for 28 cats was performed to establish preliminary guidelines for the measurement deemed the most reliable estimator of splenic size. RESULTS: Radiographic measurements of total and segmental splenic length were significantly correlated with the respective CT measurements and with splenic volume. Agreement between radiographic and CT measurements of segmental length was good; interobserver agreement was excellent for all variables. In retrospective evaluations, median segmental length of the spleen was 57.87 mm (range, 34.72 to 105.44 mm) on radiographs; the caudal border of the splenic head on lateral views was located from the cranial part of L1 to the caudal part of L2, and the caudal border of the splenic tail on ventrodorsal views was located from the caudal part of L2 to the caudal part of L5. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results indicated that segmental length of the spleen on radiographs is a reliable estimator of splenic size in healthy cats.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Oblique lumbar interbody fusion (OLIF) is useful as surgical treatment of degenerative lumbar disease. However, revision surgery has often resulted in worse surgical outcomes than primary surgery. Thus, we compared the usefulness of OLIF as primary surgery (PS) versus revision surgery (RS). METHODS: We retrospectively investigated 173 patients who had undergone single-level OLIF from 2016 to 2018. The radiological and clinical outcomes were compared between PS (n = 152) and RS (n = 21). The effects of RS on the clinical outcomes (Oswestry Disability Index [ODI] cutoff, 12) after surgery were investigated. RESULTS: The ODI and visual analog scale score at 6 and 12 months after surgery was worse in the RS group than in the PS group (P < 0.05). In the RS group, the visual analog scale score for leg pain of the previous laminectomy side was worse than that of the virgin side at 6 and 12 months after surgery (P < 0.05). The disc height, ligamentum flavum, and subsidence did not differ between the 2 groups. However, the cross-sectional area enlargement differed between the 2 groups (P < 0.05). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that RS and severe subsidence were risk factors for differences in the ODI (P = 0.006 and P = 0.017, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Most radiological outcomes were similar between the RS and PS groups, with no differences in complications or the requirement for additional posterior decompression. However, OLIF resulted in relatively poor clinical outcomes when used as RS. Thus, revision spine surgery tends to result in poor outcomes compared with those of primary spine surgery; however, OLIF can be a tolerable option for revision spine surgery.
