RESUMEN

Sustainable energies from weather are the most ubiquitous and non-depleted resources. However, existing devices exploiting weather-dependent energies are sensitive to weather conditions and geographical locations, making their universal applicability challenging. Herein, we propose an all-weather sustainable glass surface integrating a triboelectric nanogenerator and radiative cooler, which serves as a sustainable device, harvesting energy from raindrops and saving energy on sunny days. By systematically designing transparent, high-performance triboelectric layers, functioning as thermal emitters simultaneously, particularly compatible with radiative cooling components optimized with an evolutionary algorithm, our proposed device achieves optimal performance for all-weather-dependent energies. We generate 248.28 Wm-2 from a single droplet with an energy conversion ratio of 2.5%. Moreover, the inner temperature is cooled down by a maximum of 24.1 °C compared to pristine glass. Notably, as the proposed device is realized to provide high transparency up to 80% in the visible range, we are confident that our proposed device can be applied to versatile applications.

RESUMEN

Multiplexed ultraviolet (UV) metaholograms, which are capable of displaying multiple holographic images from a single-layer device, are promising for enhancing tamper resistance and functioning as optical encryption devices. Despite considerable interest in optical security, the commercialization of UV metaholograms encounters obstacles, such as high-resolution patterning and material choices. Here, we realize spin-multiplexed UV metaholograms using a high-throughput printable platform that incorporates a zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) particle-embedded resin (PER). Utilizing ZrO2 PER, which is transparent and exhibits a refractive index of approximately 1.8 at 320 nm, we fabricated a single device capable of encoding dual holographic information depending on polarization states is fabricated. We demonstrate UV metaholograms achieving efficiencies of 56.23% with left circularly polarized incident beams and 57.28% with right circularly polarized incident beams. These multiplexed UV metaholograms fabricated using a one-step platform enable real-world applications in anticounterfeiting and encryption.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The association between tuberculous fibrosis and lung cancer development has been reported by some epidemiological and experimental studies; however, its underlying mechanisms remain unclear, and the role of macrophage (MФ) polarization in cancer progression is unknown. The aim of the present study was to investigate the role of M2 Arg-1+ MФ in tuberculous pleurisy-assisted tumorigenicity in vitro and in vivo. METHODS: The interactions between tuberculous pleural effusion (TPE)-induced M2 Arg-1+ MФ and A549 lung cancer cells were evaluated. A murine model injected with cancer cells 2 weeks after Mycobacterium bovis bacillus Calmette-Guérin pleural infection was used to validate the involvement of tuberculous fibrosis to tumor invasion. RESULTS: Increased CXCL9 and CXCL10 levels of TPE induced M2 Arg-1+ MФ polarization of murine bone marrow-derived MФ. TPE-induced M2 Arg-1+ MФ polarization facilitated lung cancer proliferation via autophagy signaling and E-cadherin signaling in vitro. An inhibitor of arginase-1 targeting M2 Arg-1+ MФ both in vitro and in vivo significantly reduced tuberculous fibrosis-induced metastatic potential of lung cancer and decreased autophagy signaling and E-cadherin expression. CONCLUSION: Tuberculous pleural fibrosis induces M2 Arg-1+ polarization, and M2 Arg-1+ MФ contribute to lung cancer metastasis via autophagy and E-cadherin signaling. Therefore, M2 Arg-1+ tumor associated MФ may be a novel therapeutic target for tuberculous fibrosis-induced lung cancer progression.

RESUMEN

Sustainability, humidity sensing and product origin are important features of food packaging. While waste generated from labelling and packaging causes environmental destruction, humidity can result in food spoilage during delivery and counterfeit-prone labelling undermines consumer trust. Here we introduce a food label based on a water-soluble nanocomposite ink with a high refractive index that addresses these issues. By patterning the nanocomposite ink using nanoimprint lithography, the resultant metasurface shows bright and vivid structural colours. This method makes it possible to quickly and inexpensively create patterns on large surfaces. A QR code is also developed that can provide up-to-date information on food products. Microprinting hidden in the QR code protects against counterfeiting, cannot be physically detached or replicated and may be used as a humidity indicator. Our proposed food label can reduce waste while ensuring customers receive accurate product information.

RESUMEN

Background: Since the World Health Organization's pandemic declaration in March 2020, Korea has witnessed shifts in lifestyle behaviors, impacting habits tied to socioeconomic status and contributing to metabolic syndrome (MetS). To investigate this issue, the current study aimed to investigate changes in MetS prevalence, particularly based on income levels before and after the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Methods: This study used data from the 8th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2019-2020). A total of 6,840 individuals aged 30-65 years were included in this study. Household income was divided into high (≥75th percentile), middle (25-75th percentile), and low (≤25th percentile). A multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed to explore the interaction between this association before and after the COVID-19 pandemic. Results: A statistically significant difference was found in the prevalence of MetS before and after the COVID-19 pandemic (26.7% to 30.2%, P=0.001). These changes differed based on income levels. The increase in the prevalence of MetS was statistically significant in the low- and high-income groups but not in the middle-income group (low: 8.0%p increase [P=0.039], middle: 1.0%p increase [P=0.522], high: 6.4%p increase [P<0.001]). The interaction between household income and the COVID-19 pandemic on MetS was statistically significant (P for interaction= 0.032). Conclusion: This study revealed that P for interaction between household income, MetS, and the period before and after the COVID-19 pandemic was significant. Changes in physical activity and eating habits during the COVID- 19 pandemic may have contributed to these differences.

RESUMEN

Nanoimprint lithography (NIL) has been utilized to address the manufacturing challenges of high cost and low throughput for optical metasurfaces. To overcome the limitations inherent in conventional imprint resins characterized by a low refractive index (n), high-n nanocomposites have been introduced to directly serve as meta-atoms. However, comprehensive research on these nanocomposites is notably lacking. In this study, we focus on the composition of high-n zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) nanoparticle (NP) concentration and solvents used to produce ultraviolet (UV) metaholograms and quantify the transfer fidelity by the measured conversion efficiency. The utilization of 80 wt% ZrO2 NPs in MIBK, MEK, and acetone results in conversion efficiencies of 62.3%, 51.4%, and 61.5%, respectively, at a wavelength of 325 nm. The analysis of the solvent composition and NP concentration can further enhance the manufacturing capabilities of high-n nanocomposites in NIL, enabling potential practical use of optical metasurfaces.

RESUMEN

Metasurfaces are flat arrays of nanostructures that allow exquisite control of phase and amplitude of incident light. Although metasurfaces offer new active element for both fundamental science and applications, the challenge still remains to overcome their low information capacity and passive nature. Here, by integrating an inverse-designed-metasurface with oblique helicoidal cholesteric liquid crystal (ChOH), simultaneous spatial and spectral tunable metasurfaces with a high information capacity for dynamic hyperspectral holography, are demonstrated. The inverse design facilitates a single-phase map encoding of ten independent holographic images at different wavelengths. ChOH provides precise spectral modulation with narrow bandwidth and wide tunable regime in response to programmed stimuli, thus enabling dynamic switching of the multicolor holography. The results provide simple and generalizable principles for the rational design of interactive metasurfaces that will find numerous applications, including security platform.

RESUMEN

Industrial cities are strongly influenced by primary emissions of PM2.5 from local industries. In addition, gaseous precursors, such as sulfur oxides (SOX), nitrogen oxides (NOX), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), emitted from industrial sources, undergo conversion into secondary inorganic and organic aerosols (SIAs and SOAs). In this study, the spatial distributions of primary and secondary PM2.5 in Ulsan, the largest industrial city in South Korea, were visualized. PM2.5 components (ions, carbons, and metals) and PM2.5 precursors (SO2, NO2, NH3, and VOCs) were measured to estimate the concentrations of secondary inorganic ions (SO42-, NO3-, and NH4+) and secondary organic aerosol formation potential (SOAFP). The spatial distributions of SIAs and SOAs were then plotted by combining atmospheric dispersion modeling, receptor modeling, and monitoring data. Spatial distribution maps of primary and secondary PM2.5 provide fundamental insights for formulating management policies in different districts of Ulsan. For instance, among the five districts in Ulsan, Nam-gu exhibited the highest levels of primary PM2.5 and secondary nitrate. Consequently, controlling both PM2.5 and NO2 emissions becomes essential in this district. The methodology developed in this study successfully identified areas with dominant contributions from both primary emissions and secondary formation. This approach can be further applied to prioritize control measures during periods of elevated PM levels in other industrial cities.

RESUMEN

Conventional photonic devices exhibit static optical properties that are design-dependent, including the material's refractive index and geometrical parameters. However, they still possess attractive optical responses for applications and are already exploited in devices across various fields. Hydrogel photonics has emerged as a promising solution in the field of active photonics by providing primarily deformable geometric parameters in response to external stimuli. Over the past few years, various studies have been undertaken to attain stimuli-responsive photonic devices with tunable optical properties. Herein, we focus on the recent advancements in hydrogel-based photonics and micro/nanofabrication techniques for hydrogels. In particular, fabrication techniques for hydrogel photonic devices are categorized into film growth, photolithography (PL), electron-beam lithography (EBL), and nanoimprint lithography (NIL). Furthermore, we provide insights into future directions and prospects for deformable hydrogel photonics, along with their potential practical applications.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Electronic health (eHealth) literacy is a relatively new concept used to determine health outcomes. However, it is not well known how eHealth literacy relates to health outcomes such as diabetes self-management. PURPOSE: This study was designed to examine the relationships among eHealth literacy, self-efficacy, social support, and self-management in people with Type 2 diabetes. METHODS: A cross-sectional design was used to examine secondary data from a field survey of people with Type 2 diabetes recruited from outpatient clinics from August to December 2021 ( N = 453). A structural equation model was used that first analyzed the measurement model using confirmatory factor analysis and then tested the hypothesized structural model to estimate the expected relationships among the study variables. The significance of the statistical estimates for the model was assessed based on the 95% bias-corrected bootstrap confidence interval from 5,000 bootstrap resamples. RESULTS: Significant, indirect relationships were found between eHealth literacy and self-management via self-efficacy (ß = 0.26, B = 0.17, 95% CI [0.10, 0.24]) and via social support and, in turn, self-efficacy (ß = 0.08, B = 0.05, 95% CI [0.04, 0.08]). eHealth literacy, social support, and self-efficacy together explained 58.1% of the variance in self-management. CONCLUSION/IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: This study provides new evidence regarding how eHealth literacy relates to self-management in people with Type 2 diabetes via two indirect pathways, including self-efficacy alone and social support and self-efficacy in series. An eHealth literacy program for self-management should be developed in clinical practice that includes strategies for inducing synergistic effects from self-efficacy and social support on self-management in people with Type 2 diabetes.

RESUMEN

The Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) is widely used to measure the severity of depressive symptoms and to screen for depressive disorder, but its measurement invariance has received little research attention. The aim of this study was to assess the measurement invariance of the PHQ-9 across various sociodemographic and medical-condition groups. The structural validity and internal consistency of the PHQ-9 were also assessed as the prerequisite properties for measurement invariance. This study was conducted using data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The included participants comprised 5,347 people older than 19 years. Exploratory graph analysis (EGA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were performed to determine structural validity, and the omega coefficient (ω) was used to determine internal consistency. Measurement invariance (configural, metric, and scalar invariance) was evaluated using multigroup confirmatory factor analysis (MGCFA). The single structural model of the PHQ-9 that was validated by EGA was also satisfactory with fit indices of χ2 = 770.765 (p < 0.001), CFI = 0.944, SRMR = 0.040, and RMSEA = 0.076 (90% CI = 0.072-0.081). The ω of the PHQ-9 was 0.812, implying satisfactory internal consistency. The one-factor PHQ-9 had equivalent overall structure, factor loadings, and item intercepts across age groups, suggesting invariance across ages. Partial scalar invariance was demonstrated across sex and marital-status groups. Partial metric and scalar invariance were supported across education groups. Scalar invariance was supported among all of the medical-condition (hypertension, diabetes, cancer, arthritis, asthma, and heart disease) groups. Overall, the measurement invariance of the one-factor PHQ-9 was empirically supported across sociodemographic and medical-condition groups. The PHQ-9 can be reliably used to compare the severity of depressive symptoms across these groups in research and practice.

RESUMEN

A single-step printable platform for ultraviolet (UV) metasurfaces is introduced to overcome both the scarcity of low-loss UV materials and manufacturing limitations of high cost and low throughput. By dispersing zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) nanoparticles in a UV-curable resin, ZrO2 nanoparticle-embedded-resin (nano-PER) is developed as a printable material which has a high refractive index and low extinction coefficient from near-UV to deep-UV. In ZrO2 nano-PER, the UV-curable resin enables direct pattern transfer and ZrO2 nanoparticles increase the refractive index of the composite while maintaining a large bandgap. With this concept, UV metasurfaces can be fabricated in a single step by nanoimprint lithography. As a proof of concept, UV metaholograms operating in near-UV and deep-UV are experimentally demonstrated with vivid and clear holographic images. The proposed method enables repeat and rapid manufacturing of UV metasurfaces, and thus will bring UV metasurfaces more close to real life.

RESUMEN

Humidity-responsive structural coloration is actively investigated to realize real-time humidity sensors for applications in smart farming, food storage, and healthcare management. Here, humidity-tunable nano pixels are investigated with a 700 nm resolution that demonstrates full standard RGB (sRGB) gamut coverage with a millisecond-response time. The color pixels are designed as Fabry-Pérot (F-P) etalons which consist of an aluminum mirror substrate, humidity-responsive polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) spacer, and a top layer of disordered silver nanoparticles (NPs). The measured volume change of the PVA reaches up to 62.5% when the relative humidity (RH) is manipulated from 20 to 90%. The disordered silver NP layer permits the penetration of water molecules into the PVA layer, enhancing the speed of absorption and swelling down to the millisecond level. Based on the real-time response of the hydrogel-based F-P etalons with a high-throughput 3D nanoimprint technique, a high-resolution multicolored color print that can have potential applications in display technologies and optical encryption, is demonstrated.

RESUMEN

Metasurface-generated holography has emerged as a promising route for fully reproducing vivid scenes by manipulating the optical properties of light using ultra-compact devices. However, achieving multiple holographic images using a single metasurface is still difficult due to the capacity limit of a single meta-atom. In this work, an inverse design method based on gradient-descent optimization is presented to encode multiple pieces of holographic information into a single metasurface. The proposed method allows the inverse design of single-cell metasurfaces without the need for complex meta-atom design strategies, facilitating high-throughput fabrication using broadband low-loss materials. By exploiting the proposed design method, both multiplane red-green-blue (RGB) color and three-dimensional (3D) holograms are designed and experimentally demonstrated. Multiplane RGB color holograms with nine distinct holograms are achieved, which demonstrate the state-of-the-art data capacity of a phase-only metasurface. The first experimental demonstration of metasurface-generated 3D holograms with completely independent and distinct images in each plane is also presented. The current research findings provide a viable route for practical metasurface-generated holography by demonstrating the high-density holography produced by a single metasurface. It is expected to ultimately lead to optical storage, display, and full-color imaging applications.

RESUMEN

AIM: To investigate the relationship between Type D personality and adverse health outcomes [glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) and health-related quality of life (HRQOL)] directly, and indirectly via diabetes distress and social isolation in people with type 2 diabetes. DESIGN: A secondary analysis of 524 participant's data derived from a cross-sectional, correlational study with people with type 2 diabetes. METHODS: Data were analysed using the PROCESS macro of SPSS. RESULTS: Type D personality was present in 31.3% of the participants, and exerted a direct effect on HRQOL but not on HbA1c. Type D personality indirectly affected both HbA1c and HRQOL via the mediators of diabetes distress and social isolation. Nurses need to monitor people with type 2 diabetes to determine whether Type D personality is present. Those with Type D personality should be provided with interventions to reduce diabetes distress and alleviate social isolation in order to improve HbA1c and HRQOL.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The revised Diabetes Knowledge Test (DKT2) is the instrument that is the most widely used for measuring diabetes knowledge; nevertheless, its structural validity has never been evaluated. This study aimed to determine the psychometric properties of the DKT2. METHODS: This study performed a secondary data analysis of people with diabetes recruited at university hospitals. Rasch analysis was used. RESULTS: One item in the 14-item DKT2 measuring general diabetes knowledge exhibited a poor-fit, and so it was eliminated. The person-item map showed that items of greater difficulty need to be added to the instrument. The principal-components analysis of residuals revealed a unidimensional structure. The person reliability was 0.50, with a person separation index of 1.01. Measurement invariance was not satisfied for items 11 and 2 according to gender and age. CONCLUSIONS: The unidimensional structure of the 13-item DKT2 demonstrated poor person reliability and a low person separation index. Females and elderly persons found it more difficult to respond to items 11 and 2, respectively. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: Careful consideration is necessary when using the 13-item DKT2 in practice and research. It is recommended for future studies to add items of greater difficulty to the instrument.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate studies on the measurement properties of self-reported instruments. METHOD: This descriptive review included studies on measurement properties that were reported in Asian Nursing Research over a five-year period from 2016 to September 2020. Nine key measurement properties were reviewed for each study: content validity, structural validity, internal consistency, cross-cultural validity/measurement invariance, reliability, measurement error, criterion validity, hypotheses-testing construct validity, and responsiveness. RESULTS: The most commonly applied measurement properties were structural validity and internal consistency. However, structural validity using confirmatory factor analysis or item response theory/Rasch analysis needs to be rigorously analyzed and interpreted. None of the studies assessed measurement error and responsiveness. CONCLUSION: It is recommended for nursing researchers to assess measurement properties beyond structural validity and internal consistency using more rigorous methodologies.

RESUMEN

Recent data suggested a causative role of uric acid (UA) in the development of renal disease, in which endothelial dysfunction is regarded as the key mechanism. Endothelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EndoMT) and shedding of the glycocalyx are early changes of endothelial dysfunction. We investigated whether UA induced EndoMT in HUVECs and an animal model of hyperuricemia fed with 2% oxonic acid for 4 wk. UA induced EndoMT in HUVECs with a generation of reactive oxygen species via the activation of membranous NADPH oxidase (from 15 min) and mitochondria (from 6 h) along with glycocalyx shedding (from 6 h), which were blocked by probenecid. GM6001, an inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinase, alleviated UA-induced glycocalyx shedding and EndoMT. Antioxidants including N-acetyl cysteine, apocynin, and mitotempo ameliorated EndoMT; however, they did not change glycocalyx shedding in HUVECs. In the kidney of hyperuricemic rats, endothelial staining in peritubular capillaries (PTCs) was substantially decreased with a de novo expression of α-smooth muscle actin in PTCs. Plasma level of syndecan-1 was increased in hyperuricemic rats, which was ameliorated by allopurinol. UA caused a phenotypic transition of endothelial cells via induction of oxidative stress with glycocalyx shedding, which could be one of the mechanisms of UA-induced endothelial dysfunction and kidney disease.-Ko, J., Kang, H.-J., Kim, D.-A., Kim, M.-J., Ryu, E.-S., Lee, S., Ryu, J.-H., Roncal, C., Johnson, R. J., Kang, D.-H. Uric acid induced the phenotype transition of vascular endothelial cells via induction of oxidative stress and glycocalyx shedding.
