RESUMEN

The role of melatonin and plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) in enhancing abiotic stress tolerance has been widely investigated. However, the mechanism underlying the interaction between melatonin and PGPR in drought stress tolerance is poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the role of Bacillus sp. strain IPR-4 co-inoculated with melatonin (IPR-4/MET) to ameliorate drought stress response in soybean. Initially, 16 random isolates were selected from a previously pooled collection of isolates from soil at plant physiology lab, and were screesn for plant growth promoting (PGP) traits and their survival rate polyethylene glycol (PEG6000) (5%, 10%, and 15%). Among these isolate Bacillus sp. strain IPR-4 were selected on base of its significant PGP traits such as the survival rate gradient concentrations of PEG6000 (5%, 10%, and 15%) compared to other isolates, and produced high levels of indole-3-acetic acid and organic acids, coupled with exopolysaccharide, siderophores, and phosphate solubilization under drought stress. The Bacillus sp. strain IPR-4 were then validated using 16S rRNA sequencing. To further investigate the growth-promoting ability of the Bacillus sp. IPR-4 and its potential interaction with MET, the bacterial inoculum (40 mL of 4.5 × 10-8 cells/mL) was applied alone or in combination with MET to soybean plants for 5 days. Then, pre-inoculated soybean plants were subjected to drought stress conditions for 9 days by withholding water under greenhouse conditions. Furthermore, when IPR-4/MET was applied to plants subjected to drought stress, a significant increase in plant height (33.3%) and biomass (fresh weight) was observed. Similarly, total chlorophyll content increased by 37.1%, whereas the activity of peroxidase, catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione reductase increased by 38.4%, 34.14%, 76.8%, 69.8%, and 31.6%, respectively. Moreover, the hydrogen peroxide content and malondialdehyde decreased by 37.3% and 30% in drought-stressed plants treated with IPR-4 and melatonin. Regarding the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl activity and total phenolic content, shows 38% and 49.6% increase, respectively. Likewise, Bacillus-melatonin-treated plants enhanced the uptake of magnesium, calcium, and potassium by 31.2%, 50.7%, and 30.5%, respectively. Under the same conditions, the salicylic acid content increased by 29.1%, whereas a decreasing abscisic acid content (25.5%) was observed. The expression levels of GmNCED3, GmDREB2, and GmbZIP1 were recorded as the lowest. However, Bacillus-melatonin-treated plants recorded the highest expression levels (upregulated) of GmCYP707A1 and GmCYP707A2, GmPAL2.1, and GmERD1 in response to drought stress. In a nutshell, these data confirm that Bacillus sp. IPR-4 and melatonin co-inoculation has the highest plant growth-promoting efficiency under both normal and drought stress conditions. Bacillus sp. IPR-4/melatonin is therefore proposed as an effective plant growth regulator that optimizes nutrient uptake, modulates redox homeostasis, and enhances drought tolerance in soybean plants.

Understanding the pivoting neuromuscular control of the lower limb and its associated muscle properties is critical for developing diagnostic and rehabilitation tools. However, to the best of our knowledge, a device that can evaluate these factors simultaneously remains lacking. To address this gap, a device that can investigate pivoting neuromuscular control and associated muscle properties was developed in this study. The proposed device consisted of a pivoting mechanism and height-adjustable chair with a brace interface. The device can control a footplate at various speeds to facilitate pivoting stretching and quantify neuromuscular control. Time-synchronized ultrasonographic images can be acquired simultaneously to quantify muscle properties during both active and passive pivoting movements. The muscle displacement, fascicle length/displacement, pennation angle, pivoting stiffness, and pivoting instability were investigated using the proposed device. Further, the feasibility of the device was demonstrated through a cross-sectional study with healthy subjects. The proposed device successfully quantified changes in muscle displacement during passive and active pivoting movements, pivoting stiffness during passive movements, and neuromuscular control during active movements. Therefore, the proposed device is expected to be used as a research and therapeutic tool for improving pivoting neuromuscular control and muscle functions and investigating the underlying mechanisms associated between muscle properties and joint movement in the transverse plane.

Background: The diffuse sclerosing variant (DSV) is among the aggressive variants of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) and is more prevalent in pediatric patients than in adult patients. Few studies have assessed its characteristics owing to its low incidence. We aimed to evaluate the relationship between recurrence and age in the DSV of PTC. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed patients diagnosed with the DSV or conventional PTC (cPTC) after surgery at a medical center between May 1988 and January 2019. We compared the clinico-pathological characteristics and surgical outcomes of the DSV and cPTC groups and between adult and pediatric patients with DSV. Results: Among the 24,626 patients, 202 had the DSV, and 24,424 were diagnosed with cPTC. The recurrence rate was significantly higher in the DSV group than in the cPTC group. In the DSV group, the recurrence rate was significantly higher in the pediatric patient group than in the adult patient group. Moreover, the association between recurrence and age group showed different patterns between the DSV and cPTC groups with restricted cubic splines (RCS). While both RCS curves showed a U-shaped distribution, the RCS curve tended to be located within the younger age group. Conclusions: This study demonstrated that pediatric patients with DSV are at a greater risk for recurrence compared with adult patients; moreover, the pattern of recurrence risk according to age is different from that of cPTC.

RESUMEN

The purpose of this paper is to propose a novel transfer learning regularization method based on knowledge distillation. Recently, transfer learning methods have been used in various fields. However, problems such as knowledge loss still occur during the process of transfer learning to a new target dataset. To solve these problems, there are various regularization methods based on knowledge distillation techniques. In this paper, we propose a transfer learning regularization method based on feature map alignment used in the field of knowledge distillation. The proposed method is composed of two attention-based submodules: self-pixel attention (SPA) and global channel attention (GCA). The self-pixel attention submodule utilizes both the feature maps of the source and target models, so that it provides an opportunity to jointly consider the features of the target and the knowledge of the source. The global channel attention submodule determines the importance of channels through all layers, unlike the existing methods that calculate these only within a single layer. Accordingly, transfer learning regularization is performed by considering both the interior of each single layer and the depth of the entire layer. Consequently, the proposed method using both of these submodules showed overall improved classification accuracy than the existing methods in classification experiments on commonly used datasets.

Background: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a significant challenge in healthcare, imposing a significant social burden. While there are considerable researches dedicated to AKI and the recovery of AKI patients, a crucial factor in their prognosis, is often overlooked. Thus, our study aims to address this issue through the development of a machine learning-based approach to predict restoration of kidney function in patients with AKI. Methods: Our study encompassed data from 350,345 cases, derived from two hospitals. AKI was classified in accordance with the Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes. Criteria for recovery were established as either a 33% decrease in serum creatinine levels at AKI onset or reduction to values lower than the baseline, which was initially employed for the diagnosis of AKI. We employed various machine learning models, selecting 43 pertinent features for analysis. Results: Our analysis contained 7,041 and 2,929 patients' data from internal cohort and external cohort respectively. The Categorical Boosting model demonstrated significant predictive accuracy, as evidenced by an internal area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) of 0.7860, and an external AUROC score of 0.7316, thereby confirming its robustness in predictive performance. SHapley Additive exPlanations values were employed to explain key factors impacting recovery of renal function in AKI patients, highlighting factors such as elevated urine specific gravity, body temperature, and phosphorus levels. Conclusion: This study presented a novel machine learning framework for predicting renal function recovery in patients with AKI, offering a deeper understanding of the key variables affecting recovery. The clinical applicability of the model was assessed across distinct hospital settings, which revealed variations in its efficacy. Although the model exhibited favorable outcomes, the necessity for further enhancements and the incorporation of more diverse datasets is imperative for its application in real-world scenarios.

We explore the effect of stress-recovery schedule on the cumulative creep response of lumbar tissues. Twelve participants performed a 48-minute protocol that consisted of 12 min of full trunk flexion and 36 min of upright standing. Two stress-recovery (work-rest) schedules were considered: a) three minutes of full trunk flexion followed by twelve minutes of upright standing (3:12), and b) one minute of full trunk flexion followed by four minutes of upright standing (1:4). Lumbar kinematics and EMG activity of erector spinae muscles were collected. Cumulative creep deformation was explored by considering the changes in peak lumbar flexion angles during full flexion and changes in the angles of flexion-relaxation (EMG-off) of the lumbar extensor musculature after the 48-minute protocol. The results of time-dependent lumbar flexion angle during full flexion revealed a noticeable creep response in both work-rest schedules, but the cumulative creep response was significantly greater in the 3:12 schedule (Δ3.5°) than in the 1:4 schedule (Δ1.6°). Similarly, the change in the EMG-off lumbar flexion angle in the 3:12 schedule was significantly greater than in the 1:4 schedule (Δ2.5° vs -Δ0.2°, respectively). These results indicate that the passive lumbar tissues recover their force producing capability more rapidly with shorter cycle times.

INTRODUCTION: Ceramic-on-ceramic (CoC) bearings have been increasingly used in total hip arthroplasty (THA) because of their superior wear resistance and biocompatibility. However, there is a scarcity of reports on the computed tomography (CT) evaluation of CoC bearings with more than 10 years. The aim of this study was to evaluate the long-term CT results of THA using CoC bearings for more than 20 years of follow-up. We hypothesized that there would be no wear, osteolysis, or ceramic fracture. METHODS: Between November 1997 and June 2003, 956 hips underwent THA using alumina-on-alumina bearings at a tertiary referral hospital. Among them, 107 hips were assessed, all of which underwent a CT examination more than 20 years after the index surgery. The mean age at the time of surgery was 41 years, and a CT scan was performed at an average of 22.0 years postoperatively (range, 20.0 to 25.1). The CT scans were thoroughly assessed for osteolysis, stem notching, and ceramic component fracture. RESULTS: No loosening was observed in the acetabular cup or femoral stem. Stem notching was observed in 3 hips (2.8%). In the CT scan taken after a minimum of 20 years of follow-up, one case (0.9%) of osteolysis around the cup and two cases (1.9%) of osteolysis around the femoral stem were noted. Suspected chip fractures of the ceramic insert were discovered in four cases (3.7%). Despite these findings, the patients remained asymptomatic, and no subsequent surgical intervention was needed after close follow-up. CONCLUSION: Routine CT examinations for patients who underwent THA using CoC bearings over 20 years ago revealed unexpected findings, such as osteolysis and suspected chip fractures of the ceramic liner. However, routine CT scans may not be universally necessary. The CT evaluation in this cohort should be selectively performed for patients who have relevant clinical symptoms.

Allelopathy is a biological process in which one organism releases biochemicals that affect the growth and development of other organisms. The current investigation sought to determine the allelopathic effect of Rumex acetosella on white clover (Trifolium repens) growth and development by using its shoot extract (lower IC50 value) as a foliar treatment. Here, different concentrations (25, 50, 100, and 200 g/L) of shoot extract from Rumex acetosella were used as treatments. With increasing concentrations of shoot extract, the plant growth parameters, chlorophyll and total protein content of Trifolium repens decreased. On the other hand, ROS, such as O2.- and H2O2, and antioxidant enzymes, including SOD, CAT, and POD, increased with increasing shoot extract concentration. A phytohormonal study indicated that increased treatment concentrations increased ABA and SA levels while JA levels were reduced. For the identification of allelochemicals, liquid‒liquid extraction, thin-layer chromatography, and open-column chromatography were conducted using R. acetosella shoot extracts, followed by a seed bioassay on the separated layer. A lower IC50 value was obtained through GC/MS analysis. gammaSitosterol was identified as the most abundant component. The shoot extract of Rumex acetosella has strong allelochemical properties that may significantly impede the growth and development of Trifolium repens. This approach could help to understand the competitive abilities of this weed species and in further research provide an alternate weed management strategy.

Recurrence after stroke is common, and associated with a high mortality rate. Degradation of the elastic tissue in the arterial wall has been shown to aggravate atherosclerosis in blood vessels. Considering that type 1 collagen is present in both bone and vascular smooth muscle cells, we explored whether osteoporotic conditions affect the likelihood of stroke recurrence in postmenopausal women following atherosclerotic ischemic stroke. To determine actual bone mineral density (BMD), the Hounsfield unit values in the frontal skull were evaluated using brain computed tomography (CT) scans taken at admission. A multivariate Cox regression analysis was also performed to examine if osteoporosis could independently predict stroke recurrence in postmenopausal patients with large artery atherosclerosis (LAA) or small vessel occlusion (SVO) stroke. This study included 2130 consecutive patients (both males and females aged 50 and older) with acute LAA or SVO strokes. After adjusting for all covariates, hypothetical osteoporosis was identified as an independent predictor of stroke recurrence in female patients ≥50 years with acute LAA or SVO stroke (hazard ratio, 1.84; 95 % confidence interval, 1.05 to 3.24; p = 0.034). Our findings showed that osteoporosis could potentially affect the recurrence of ischemic stroke in postmenopausal patients with LAA or SVO stroke.

Phenotypic mutants are valuable resources for elucidating the function of genes responsible for their expression. This study examined mutant rice strains expressing three traits: spotted leaf 6 (spl6), lax panicle (lax), and liguleless (lg). In the mutant, the spl6 phenotype was a genetically programmed lesion-mimicking mutation (LMM) that displayed spontaneously scattered spots across the leaf surface. In the lg trait, the plant lacked a collar region, and there were no auricles and ligules at the junction of the leaf blade and leaf sheath. The lax panicle trait manifested as sparely arranged spikelets resulting from the terminal spikelet with no lateral spikelets, which caused a drastic reduction of the total seed number in the mutant. All three mutant genes were genetically recessive and had nuclear gene regulation. The dihybrid segregation of the lg gene was classified independently according to the Mendelian 9:3:3:1 dihybrid segregation ratio in the F2 generation, suggesting that the lg gene is not linked to the same chromosome as the lax and spl6 genes. On the other hand, spl6 and lax were not assorted independently, indicating that they are closely linked on chromosome 1 in rice. Additional linkage analysis from the recombination of spl6 and lax genes reconfirmed that the two genes were ~9.4 cM away from each other. The individual single-gene mutant plant from one plant with a three-gene mutation (spl6, lax, and lg) was isolated and characterized, which will be a crucial resource for the gene cloning and molecular characterization of these genes.

We synthesized a temperature-responsive ionic liquid, [N4444][SS], and incorporated it into an environmentally friendly cellulose acetate (CA)-based battery separator. A pore was formed in the battery separator by [N4444][SS], which pierced a plasticized part due to water pressure. Varying drying temperatures during membrane fabrication revealed that the CA/[N4444][SS] membrane dried at 50 °C exhibited greater thickness and a smaller average pore size, resulting in an asymmetric internal structure. Despite the asymmetry, this membrane demonstrated significantly higher water flux and a lower Gurley value compared to the membrane dried at 25 °C, indicating minimal tortuosity and low resistance within the internal pores. Thermal behavior analysis through TGA and DSC, as well as FT-IR spectroscopy, confirmed that [N4444][SS] remains within the CA matrix, forming coordinative bonds. The findings suggest that the CA/[N4444][SS] membrane, when used as a Li-ion battery separator, could enhance Li-ion transport properties and conductivity. Moreover, the recyclability of the IL in the membrane fabrication process contributes to a more environmentally friendly approach.

With increasing concern for the environment, the demand for carbon dioxide separation, a key contributor to global warming, has escalated. Therefore, this paper focuses on carbon dioxide separation by creating an hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC)(C2H6O2)x*(C6H7O2(OH)3)n/silver tetra fluoroborate (AgBF4)/aluminum nitrate (Al(NO3)3) composite film, demonstrating excellent separation performance with a permeance of 1.0 GPU and a selectivity of 100. Silver ions enhance the solubility of carbon dioxide, aiding in its separation, and we determined the optimal aluminum composition to stabilize the silver ions. To analyze this, we examined the cross-sections using SEM, confirming a selective layer of 1.7 µm for carbon dioxide separation. Furthermore, TGA, FT-IR, and NMR analyses were conducted to investigate the interaction between the polymer and additives. This revealed that the increased polymer chain due to the interaction between Ag and HEC, along with stabilized Ag facilitated by the addition of Al, maximized the interaction with carbon dioxide via the empty s-orbital. Additionally, SEM-EDX, UV-vis, XRD, XPS analyses were employed to elucidate the movement of ions within the membrane. These results provide insights into the performance of membranes based on cellulose polymer and offer valuable insights for future applications in gas separation technologies.

Daunorubicin, also known as daunomycin, is a DNA­targeting anticancer drug that is used as chemotherapy, mainly for patients with leukemia. It has also been shown to have anticancer effects in monotherapy or combination therapy in solid tumors, but at present it has not been adequately studied in colorectal cancer (CRC). In the present study, from a screening using an FDA­approved drug library, it was found that daunorubicin suppresses GLI­dependent luciferase reporter activity. Daunorubicin also increased p53 levels, which contributed to both GLI1 suppression and apoptosis. The current detailed investigation showed that daunorubicin promoted the ß­TrCP­mediated ubiquitination and proteasomal degradation of GLI1. Moreover, a competition experiment using BODIPY­cyclopamine, a well­known Smo inhibitor, suggested that daunorubicin does not bind to Smo in HCT116 cells. Administration of daunorubicin (2 mg/kg, ip, qod, 15 days) into HCT116 xenograft mice profoundly suppressed tumor progress and the GLI1 level in tumor tissues. Taken together, the present results revealed that daunorubicin suppresses canonical Hedgehog pathways in CRC. Ultimately, the present study discloses a new mechanism of daunorubicin's anticancer effect and might provide a rationale for expanding the clinical application of daunorubicin.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to understand the temporal and spatial distribution of canonical endochondral ossification (CEO) and non-canonical endochondral ossification (NCEO) of the normal growing rat condyle, and to evaluate their histomorphological changes following the simultaneous hypotrophy of the unilateral masticatory closing muscles with botulinum toxin (BTX). DESIGN: 46 rats at postnatal 4 weeks were used for the experiment and euthanized at postnatal 4, 8, and 16 weeks. The right masticatory muscles of rats in experimental group were injected with BTX, the left being injected with saline as a control. The samples were evaluated using 3D morphometric, histological, and immunohistochemical analysis with three-dimensional regional mapping of endochondral ossifications. RESULTS: The results showed that condylar endochondral ossification changed from CEO to NCEO at the main articulating surface during the experimental period and that the BTX-treated condyle presented a retroclined smaller condyle with an anteriorly-shifted narrower articulating surface. This articulating region showed a thinner layer of the endochondral cells, and a compact distribution of flattened cells. These were related to the load concentration, decreased cellular proliferation with thin cellular layers, reduced extracellular matrix, increased cellular differentiation toward the osteoblastic bone formation, and accelerated transition of the ossification types from CEO to NCEO. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that endochondral ossification under loading tended to show more NCEO, and that masticatory muscular hypofunction by BTX had deleterious effects on endochondral bone formation and changed the condylar growth vector, resulting in a retroclined, smaller, asymmetrical, and deformed condyle with thin cartilage.

The effectiveness of radiation therapy in the treatment of cerebral cavernous malformations (CCM) remains debatable. However, numerous studies have shown a reduction in hemorrhage risk following radiotherapy for CCM. Therefore, herein, we share our experiences utilizing linear accelerator (LINAC)-based radiation for treating CCMs, with the aim of identifying the key factors influencing the therapeutic outcomes. We conducted a retrospective review of all patients with non-brainstem CCMs who underwent radiation treatment, as recorded in the NOVALIS registry at our institution. T2-weighted MR images were used for volumetric assessments using the iPlan radiotherapy planning software. To determine the independent predictors of nidus volume reduction and perilesional brain edema (PBE), we performed multivariate Cox regression analysis to calculate hazard ratios. Twenty patients with 31 non-brainstem CCMs were enrolled in this study. Analysis revealed age as an independent predictive factor for both nidus volume reduction and PBE after radiation treatment for CCM. Furthermore, a single fraction dose of 17 Gy or more was identified as an independent predictor of nidus volume decrease, while a single fraction dose of 18 Gy or more was found to be an independent risk factor for PBE in patients with CCM following LINAC-based radiation therapy. LINAC-based radiation therapy for non-brainstem CCMs with a single fraction radiation dose between 16.5 and 17.5 Gy, or a biologically equivalent dose of approximately 120 Gy, may be the most effective at reducing nidus volume and limiting side effects, particularly in patients under the age of 55 years. We further observed that the risk of PBE increased as the maximum radiation dose delivered to a 1 cc volume of the surrounding normal brain exceeded approximately 17.3 Gy. Therefore, we believe that calculating the D1cc of the normal brain may help to predict the occurrence of PBE when radiotherapy is administered to non-brainstem CCMs.

In this study, we investigated the anti-hypertensive properties of mulberry products by modulating the renin-angiotensin system (RAS). Comparative analysis showed that the ethyl acetate fractions, particularly from the Cheongil and Daeshim cultivars, contained the highest levels of polyphenols and flavonoids, with concentrations reaching 110 mg gallic acid equivalent (GE)/g and 471 mg catechin equivalent (CE)/g of extract, respectively. The ethyl acetate fraction showed superior angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory activity, mainly because of the presence of the prenylated flavonoids kuwanon G and H. UPLC/Q-TOF-MS analysis identified kuwanon G and H as the primary active components, which significantly contributed to the pharmacological efficacy of the extract. In vivo testing of mice fed a high-salt diet showed that the ethyl acetate fraction substantially reduced the heart weight and lowered the serum renin and angiotensinogen levels by 34% and 25%, respectively, highlighting its potential to modulate the RAS. These results suggested that the ethyl acetate fraction of mulberry root bark is a promising candidate for the development of natural ACE inhibitors. This finding has significant implications for the management of hypertension through RAS regulation and the promotion of cardiovascular health in the functional food industry.

BACKGROUND: Dermatofibrosarcoma Protuberans (DFSP) is a rare soft tissue sarcoma, accounting for approximately 1% of all tumors; however, DFSP of the breast is extremely rare. Moreover, DFSP generally has a low malignant potential and is characterized by a high rate of local recurrence along with a small but definite risk of metastasis. The risk of metastasis is higher in fibrosarcomatous transformation in DFSP than in ordinary DFSP. CASE REPORT: We have, herein, reported a case of a 61-year-old male patient with fibrosarcomatous transformation in DFSP. Preoperative Dynamic Contrastenhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging (DCE-MRI) of the breast revealed an oval-shaped mass with heterogeneous internal enhancement, a large vessel embedded within, and a washout curve pattern on kinetic curve analysis. The mass exhibited a hyperintense signal on Diffusion-weighted Imaging (DWI), with a low apparent diffusion coefficient value. Histologically, the bland spindle tumor cells were arranged in a storiform pattern. Areas with the highest histological grade demonstrated increased cellularity, cytological atypia, and mitotic activity. Immunohistochemically, Ki-67 and p53 were highly expressed. CONCLUSION: Recognizing the risk and accurately diagnosing fibrosarcomatous transformation in male breast DFSP are critical for improving prognosis and establishing appropriate treatment and follow-up plans. This emphasizes the significance of combining immunohistopathological features with DCE-MRI and DWI to assist clinicians in the early and accurate diagnosis of sarcomas arising from male breast DFSP.

Recently, microorganism and exogenous melatonin application has been recognized as an efficient biological tool for enhancing salt tolerance and heavy metal detoxification in agriculture crops. Thus, the goal of this study was to isolate and evaluate a novel melatonin-producing plant growth promoting bacterium. With high-throughput whole genome sequencing, phytohormone measurements, expression profiling, and biochemical analysis, we can identify a novel PGPB that produces melatonin and unravel how it promotes soybean growth and development and protects against salt and Cd stress. We identify the melatonin synthesis pathway (tryptophan→tryptamine→serotonin melatonin) of the halotolerant (NaCl > 800 mM) and heavy metal-resistant (Cd >3 mM) rhizobacterium Bacillus safensis EH143 and use it to treat soybean plants subjected to Cd and NaCl stresses. Results show that EH143 will highly bioaccumulate heavy metals and significantly improve P and Ca2+ uptake and the K+/Na+ (93%↑under salt stress) ratio while reducing Cd uptake (49% under Cd stress) in shoots. This activity was supported by the expression of the ion regulator HKT1, MYPB67, and the calcium sensors CDPK5 and CaMK1 which ultimately led to increased plant growth. EH143 significantly decreased ABA content in shoots by 13%, 20%, and 34% and increased SA biosynthesis in shoots by 14.8%, 31%, and 48.2% in control, salt, and Cd-treated plants, upregulating CYP707A1 and CYP707A2 and PAL1 and ICS, respectively. The melatonin content significantly decreased along with a reduced expression of ASMT3 following treatment with EH143; moreover, reduced expression of peroxidase (POD) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) by 134.5% and 39% under salt+Cd stress, respectively and increased level of total amino acids were observed. Whole-genome sequencing and annotation of EH143 revealed the presence of the melatonin precursor tryptophan synthase (trpA, trpB, trpS), metal and other ion regulators (Cd: cadA, potassium: KtrA and KtrB, phosphate: glpT, calcium: yloB, the sodium/glucose cotransporter: sgIT, and the magnesium transporter: mgtE), and enzyme activators (including the siderophore transport proteins yfiZ and yfhA, the SOD sodA, the catalase katA1, and the glutathione regulator KefG) that may be involved in programming the plant metabolic system. As a consequence, EH143 treatment significantly reduced the contents of lipid peroxidation (O2-, MDA, and H2O2) up to 69%, 46%, and 29% in plants under salt+Cd stress, respectively. These findings suggest that EH143 could be a potent biofertilizer to alleviate NaCl and Cd toxicity in crops and serve as an alternative substitute for exogenous melatonin application.

Chronic nonbacterial osteomyelitis (CNO) is histologically characterized by nonspecific osteitis. This inflammatory disorder, which lacks an infectious origin, typically presents with chronic pain and swelling at the affected site that can persist for months or even years. However, it is rare for CNO to affect the mandible. A 10-year-old girl presented with a primary complaint of pain in her left mandible. She had no significant medical or dental history. On examination, swelling was visible on the left buccal side, and imaging revealed radiolucent bone deterioration within the left mandible. This case report presents the radiological changes observed over a 12-year follow-up period. Variations in radiopacity, radiolucency, and periosteal reactions were noted periodically. This case highlights the radiological characteristics and findings that are crucial for the diagnosis of CNO, a condition for which no clear diagnostic criteria are currently available.

Diseases that occur in silkworms include soft rot, hardening disease, digestive diseases, and sepsis. However, research on the causes of bacterial diseases occurring in silkworms and the resulting changes in the microbial community is lacking. Therefore, we examined the morphological characteristics of sepsis and changes in the microbial community between silkworms that exhibit a unique odor and healthy silkworms; thus, we established a relationship between disease-causing microorganisms and sepsis. After producing a 16S rRNA amplicon library for samples showing sepsis, we obtained information on the microbial community present in silkworms using next-generation sequencing. Compared to that in healthy silkworms, in silkworms with sepsis, the abundance of the Firmicutes phylum was significantly reduced, while that of Proteobacteria was increased. Serratia sp. was dominant in silkworms with sepsis. After bacterial isolation, identification, and reinfection through the oral cavity, we confirmed this organism as the disease-causing agent; its mortality rate was 1.8 times higher than that caused by Serratia marcescens. In summary, we identified a new causative bacterium of silkworm sepsis through microbial community analysis and confirmed that the microbial community balance was disrupted by the aberrant proliferation of certain bacteria.
