RESUMEN

Permeable pavement is a technology that allows rainwater to infiltrate into the pavement. Permeable pavements not only help reduce surface runoff by allowing rainwater to infiltrate into the pavement, but also improve water quality with the filter layer that removes particulate matter pollutants. This study evaluated the particulate matter removal efficiency of bottom ash-sand mixtures as filter layers for removing fine (≤10 µm) or ultrafine (≤2.5 µm) particulate matter in the laboratory. Five filter media were tested: silica sand, bottom ash, and bottom ash-sand mixtures with 30:70, 50:50, and 70:30 ratios. The mixed filters exhibited more consistent and stable particulate matter removal efficiency over time than either the uniform sand or bottom ash filter. The 50:50 bottom ash-sand mixture demonstrated removal rates of 58.05% for 1.8 µm particles, 93.92% for 10 µm particles, and 92.45% for 60 µm particles. These findings highlight the potential of bottom ash-sand mixtures as effective filter media for removing PM10 road dust, although field validation with actual pavement systems is necessary.

Motor skill repertoire can be stably retained over long periods, but the neural mechanism underlying stable memory storage remains poorly understood. Moreover, it is unknown how existing motor memories are maintained as new motor skills are continuously acquired. Here we tracked neural representation of learned actions throughout a significant portion of a mouse's lifespan, and we show that learned actions are stably retained in motor memory in combination with context, which protects existing memories from erasure during new motor learning. We used automated home-cage training to establish a continual learning paradigm in which mice learned to perform directional licking in different task contexts. We combined this paradigm with chronic two-photon imaging of motor cortex activity for up to 6 months. Within the same task context, activity driving directional licking was stable over time with little representational drift. When learning new task contexts, new preparatory activity emerged to drive the same licking actions. Learning created parallel new motor memories while retaining the previous memories. Re-learning to make the same actions in the previous task context re-activated the previous preparatory activity, even months later. At the same time, continual learning of new task contexts kept creating new preparatory activity patterns. Context-specific memories, as we observed in the motor system, may provide a solution for stable memory storage throughout continual learning. Learning in new contexts produces parallel new representations instead of modifying existing representations, thus protecting existing motor repertoire from erasure.

Background: Kidney transplantation (KT) improves physical and psychological prognoses for patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). However, few comparative studies have examined depression and suicide rates among patients with ESKD treated with dialysis versus KT. Methods: Data on 21,809 patients with ESKD were extracted from the Korean National Health Insurance Service database, extending from January 2002 to December 2018. These patients exhibited no history of depression or insomnia before starting renal replacement therapy. Outcomes were compared between dialysis and KT recipients using 1:2 propensity score matching (PSM). Results: Of the patients, 17,649 received dialysis (hemodialysis, 15,537; peritoneal dialysis, 2,112), while 4,160 underwent KT. Of those on dialysis, 45.04% (7,949) experienced insomnia, compared to 25.72% (1,070) of KT recipients (P<0.001). Depression was more frequent among dialysis recipients (22.77%, 4,019) than KT recipients (8.61%, 358; P<0.001). Additionally, those on dialysis had a higher incidence of suicide (0.19%, 33) than recipients of KT (0.12%, 5; P=0.047). After PSM, the hazard ratio (HR) for depression in patients on dialysis compared to KT recipients was 1.76 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.56-1.99). In subgroup analysis, the relative likelihood of depression among dialysis recipients was particularly high for residents of urban areas (HR, 2.10; 95% CI, 1.80-2.44) and patients under 65 years old (HR, 1.82; 95% CI, 1.62-2.09). Conclusions: KT recipients exhibit a lower suicide rate than patients on dialysis. Furthermore, KT is associated with a lower prevalence of depression among Korean patients with ESKD, particularly urban residents and individuals under 65 years old.

Stroke is an acute cerebrovascular disease in which blood flow to the brain is suddenly disrupted, causing damage to nerve cells. It involves complex and diverse pathophysiological processes and the treatment strategies are also diverse. The treatment for patients with stroke and atrial fibrillation (AF) is aimed at suppressing thrombus formation and migration. However, information regarding the protein networking involved in different thrombus formation pathways in patients with AF and stroke is insufficient. We performed protein profiling of patients with ischemic stroke with and without AF to investigate the mechanisms of thrombus formation and its pathophysiological association while providing helpful information for treating and managing patients with AF. These two groups were compared to identify the protein networks related to thrombus formation in AF. We observed that patients with ischemic stroke and AF had activated inflammatory responses induced by C-reactive protein, lipopolysaccharide-binding protein, and alpha-1-acid glycoprotein 1. In contrast, thyroid hormones were increased due to a decrease in transthyretin and retinol-binding protein 4 levels. The mechanism underlying enhanced cardiac activity, vasodilation, and the resulting thrombosis pathway were confirmed in AF. These findings will play an essential role in improving the prevention and treatment of AF-related stroke.

BACKGROUND: With the increasing resistance to antimicrobial agents, susceptibility-guided tailored therapy has been emerging as an ideal strategy for Helicobacter pylori treatment. However, susceptibility-guided tailored therapy requires additional cost, time consumption, and invasive procedure (endoscopy) and its superiority over empirical quadruple therapy as the first-line H. pylori treatment remains unclear. AIMS: To compare the efficacy of culture-based susceptibility-guided tailored versus empirical concomitant therapy as the first-line Helicobacter pylori treatment. METHODS: This open-label, randomized trial was performed in four Korean institutions. A total of 312 Patients with H. pylori-positive culture test and naïve to treatment were randomly assigned in a 3:1 ratio to either culture-based susceptibility-guided tailored therapy (clarithromycin-based or metronidazole-based triple therapy for susceptible strains or bismuth quadruple therapy for dual-resistant strains, n = 234) or empirical concomitant therapy (n = 78) for 10 days. Eradication success was evaluated by 13C-urea breath test at least 4 weeks after treatment. RESULTS: Prevalence of dual resistance to both clarithromycin and metronidazole was 8%. H. pylori eradication rates for tailored and concomitant groups were 84.2% and 83.3% by intention-to-treat analysis (p = 0.859), respectively, and 92.9% and 91.5% by per-protocol analysis, respectively (p = 0.702), which were comparable between the two groups. However, eradication rates for dual-resistant strains were significantly higher in the tailored group than in the concomitant group. All adverse events were grade 1 or 2 based on the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events and the incidence was significantly lower in the tailored group. The proportion of patients discontinuing treatment for adverse events was comparable between the two groups (2.1% vs. 2.6%). CONCLUSIONS: The culture-based susceptibility-guided tailored therapy failed to show superiority over the empirical concomitant therapy in terms of eradication rate. Based on these findings, the treatment choice in clinical practice would depend on the background rate of antimicrobial resistance, availability of resources and costs associated with culture and susceptibility testing.

Primary malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) is a malignant tumor of mesenchymal origin that rarely occurs in the urinary tract, particularly in the urinary bladder. Unlike urothelial carcinoma, which accounts for most bladder cancers, it occurs in the submucosal portion of the bladder wall and consists of the lamina propria, muscularis propria, and adventitia. It is presumed to originate from poorly differentiated pluripotent mesenchymal cells in which fibroblasts and histiocytes are partially differentiated. Radiologically, it is known as the "non-papillary tumor" and is commonly diagnosed as a large mass without necrosis, which shows invasion beyond the muscularis propia. Although the prognosis of this rare malignancy depends on pathological parameters, it generally has a poor prognosis with high local tumor recurrence. Here, we present a case of primary MFH in the urinary bladder with clinical symptoms of lower abdominal pain without gross hematuria that recurred rapidly and showed an aggressive disease course.

Representing the probability and uncertainty of outcomes facilitates adaptive behavior by allowing organisms to prepare in advance and devote attention to relevant events. Probability and uncertainty are often studied only for valenced (appetitive or aversive) outcomes, raising the question whether the identified neural machinery also processes the probability and uncertainty of motivationally neutral outcomes. Here, we aimed to dissociate valenced from valence-independent (i.e., generic) probability (p; maximum at p=1) and uncertainty (maximum at p=0.5) signals using human neuroimaging. In a Pavlovian task (n=41; 19 females), different cues predicted appetitive, aversive, or neutral liquids with different probabilities (p=0, p=0.5, p=1). Cue-elicited motor responses accelerated, and pupil sizes increased primarily for cues that predicted valenced liquids with higher probability. For neutral liquids, uncertainty rather than probability tended to accelerate cue-induced responding and decrease pupil size. At the neural level, generic uncertainty signals were limited to occipital cortex, while generic probability also activated anterior ventromedial prefrontal cortex. These generic probability and uncertainty signals contrasted with cue-induced responses that only encoded the probability and uncertainty of valenced liquids in medial prefrontal, insular and occipital cortices. Our findings show that the brain processes probability and uncertainty in a generic fashion. Moreover, the behavioral and neural dissociation of generic and valenced signals indicates that the brain keeps track of motivational charge and highlights the need and usefulness of characterizing the exact nature of learned representations.Significance Statement Encoding the probability and uncertainty of outcomes is important for adaptive behavior. Here we ask to what extent the brain represents probability and uncertainty regardless of whether the predicted outcomes are valenced (i.e. motivationally relevant) or generic (i.e., valence-independent). We dissociate generic from valenced variables by using not only cues that predict appetitive or aversive outcomes, but also cues that predict neutral outcomes. Our data reveal distinct behavioral effects and largely separate neural representations of valenced and generic variables. For example, valenced probability activated more proximal parts of medial prefrontal and occipital cortex whereas generic probability activated more distal parts. Thus, the representation of probability and uncertainty is multiplexed, allowing for tailored information processing according to computational needs.

BACKGROUND: Precise preoperative assessment of liver vasculature and volume in living donor liver transplantation is essential for donor safety and recipient surgery. Traditional manual segmentation methods are being supplemented by deep learning (DL) models, which may offer more consistent and efficient volumetric evaluations. METHODS: This study analyzed living liver donors from Samsung Medical Center using preoperative CT angiography data between April 2022 and February 2023. A DL-based 3D residual U-Net model was developed and trained on segmented CT images to calculate the liver volume and segment vasculature, with its performance compared to traditional manual segmentation by surgeons and actual graft weight. RESULTS: The DL model achieved high concordance with manual methods, exhibiting Dice Similarity Coefficients of 0.94±0.01 for the right lobe and 0.91±0.02 for the left lobe. The liver volume estimates by DL model closely matched those of surgeons, with a mean discrepancy of 9.18 mL, and correlated more strongly with actual graft weights (R-squared value of 0.76 compared to 0.68 for surgeons). CONCLUSION: The DL model demonstrates potential as a reliable tool for enhancing preoperative planning in liver transplantation, offering consistency and efficiency in volumetric assessment. Further validation is required to establish its generalizability across various clinical settings and imaging protocols.

Background: Droplet digital (dd)PCR is a new-generation PCR technique with high precision and sensitivity; however, the positive and negative droplets are not always effectively separated because of the "rain" phenomenon. We aimed to develop a practical optimization and evaluation process for the ddPCR assay and to apply it to the detection of BRAF V600E in fine-needle aspiration (FNA) specimens of thyroid nodules, as an example. Methods: We optimized seven ddPCR parameters that can affect "rain." Analytical and clinical performance were analyzed based on histological diagnosis after thyroidectomy using a consecutive prospective series of 242 FNA specimens. Results: The annealing time and temperature, number of PCR cycles, and primer and probe concentrations were found to be more important considerations for assay optimization than the denaturation time and ramp rate. The limit of blank and 95% limit of detection were 0% and 0.027%, respectively. The sensitivity of ddPCR for histological papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) was 82.4% (95% confidence interval [CI], 73.6%-89.2%). The pooled sensitivity of BRAF V600E in FNA specimens for histological PTC was 78.6% (95% CI, 75.9%-81.2%, I2=60.6%). Conclusions: We present a practical approach for optimizing ddPCR parameters that affect the separation of positive and negative droplets to reduce rain. Our approach to optimizing ddPCR parameters can be expanded to general ddPCR assays for specific mutations in clinical laboratories. The highly sensitive ddPCR can compensate for uncertainty in cytological diagnosis by detecting low levels of BRAF V600E.

Rituximab is a monoclonal antibody that targets CD20 antigen in B cells. For pemphigus, rituximab has been highly effective in steroid-sparing therapy for moderate to severe cases. Originator rituximab has demonstrated favorable treatment effects in patients with pemphigus, but its high cost remains a challenge. Biosimilar rituximab is expected to offer a potential solution. However, it is required for the comparative study of efficacy and safety between biosimilar and originator because all biosimilars may not be identical to the originator. In this study, we compared the treatment effects and safety of biosimilar (Truxima) and originator (MabThera) rituximab in patients with pemphigus. A final cohort of 52 patients in the MabThera group and 72 patients in the Truxima group was enrolled. Except for the intravenous immunoglobulin administration rate, there were no differences in baseline characteristics between the two groups, and for the purpose of comparing efficacy, investigations into time to complete remission, total steroid intake to complete remission, and total steroid intake for 6 months following rituximab treatment revealed no significant differences between the two groups. Truxima can be considered a relatively affordable alternative treatment option for pemphigus, offering cost-effectiveness to patients who are indicated for the treatment with MabThera.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has rapidly transformed various aspects of life, and the launch of the chatbot "ChatGPT" by OpenAI in November 2022 has garnered significant attention and user appreciation. ChatGPT utilizes natural language processing based on a "generative pre-trained transfer" (GPT) model, specifically the transformer architecture, to generate human-like responses to a wide range of questions and topics. Equipped with approximately 57 billion words and 175 billion parameters from online data, ChatGPT has potential applications in medicine and orthopedics. One of its key strengths is its personalized, easy-to-understand, and adaptive response, which allows it to learn continuously through user interaction. This article discusses how AI, especially ChatGPT, presents numerous opportunities in orthopedics, ranging from preoperative planning and surgical techniques to patient education and medical support. Although ChatGPT's user-friendly responses and adaptive capabilities are laudable, its limitations, including biased responses and ethical concerns, necessitate its cautious and responsible use. Surgeons and healthcare providers should leverage the strengths of the ChatGPT while recognizing its current limitations and verifying critical information through independent research and expert opinions. As AI technology continues to evolve, ChatGPT may become a valuable tool in orthopedic education and patient care, leading to improved outcomes and efficiency in healthcare delivery. The integration of AI into orthopedics offers substantial benefits but requires careful consideration and continuous improvement.

Soybean is an important agricultural crop known for its high protein and oil content, contributing to essential nutritional and health benefits for humans. Domesticated in China over 5000 years ago, soybean has since adapted to diverse environments and spread worldwide. This study aimed to investigate the genomic characteristics and population structures of 2,317 publicly available soybean whole-genome sequences from diverse geographical regions, including China, Korea, Japan, Europe, North America and South America. We used large-scale whole-genome sequencing data to perform high-resolution analyses to reveal the genetic characteristics of soybean accessions. Soybean accessions from China and Korea exhibited landrace characteristics, indicating higher genetic diversity and adaptation to local environments. On the other hand, soybean accessions from Japan, the European Union, and South America were found to have low genetic diversity due to artificial selection and breeding for agronomic traits. We also identified key variants and genes associated with the ability to adapt to different environments. In Korean soybean accessions, we observed strong selection signals for isoflavone synthesis, an adaptive trait critical for improving soybean adaptability, survival, and reproductive success by mitigating environmental stress. Identifying specific genomic regions showing unique patterns of selective sweeps for genes such as HIDH, CYP73A11, IFS1, and CYP81E11 associated with isoflavone synthesis provided valuable insights into potential adaptation mechanisms. Our research has significantly improved our understanding of soybean diversity at the genetic level. We have identified key genetic variants and genes influencing adaptability, laying the foundation for future advances in genomics-based breeding programs and crop improvement efforts.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) conversion into value-added chemicals/fuels by utilizing solar energy is a sustainable way to mitigate our dependence on fossil fuels and stimulate a carbon-neutral economy. However, the efficient and affordable conversion of CO2 is still an ongoing challenge. Here, we report an interfacially synthesized visible-light-active Ni(II)-integrated covalent organic frameworks (TaTpBpy-Ni COFs) film as a photocatalyst for efficient CO2 conversion into carboxylic acid under ambient conditions. Notably, the TaTpBpy-Ni COFs film showed excellent photocatalytic activity for the carboxylation of various arylamines with CO2 to the corresponding arylcarboxylic acid via C-N bond activation under solar-light irradiation. Moreover, this carboxylation protocol exhibits mild reaction conditions and good functional group tolerance without the necessity of using stoichiometric metallic reductants. This work shows a benchmark example of not only the interfacially synthesized COFs film used as a photocatalyst for solar-light energy utilization but also the selective solar chemical production system of arylcarboxylic acid directly from CO2.

Despite the precarious state of marine turtles as a highly endangered species, our understanding of their diseases remains limited. This case report presents a detailed pathological investigation of spirorchiidiasis, a blood fluke infection that poses a substantial threat to marine turtles. This retrospective study examined three cases of spirorchiid-infected sea turtles, specifically, green sea turtles stranded on Jeju Island, South Korea. Premortem examination of the three spirorchiid-infected green sea turtles demonstrated nonspecific clinical symptoms; blood analysis revealed dehydration, malnutrition, and anemia. Computed tomography scans provided insights into severe pulmonary and extrapulmonary manifestations, including the mass present in the joint region. Post-mortem examinations consistently indicated severe lung lesions and systemic manifestations, with histopathological examination confirming the presence of spirorchiid ova across various organs. Despite the global prevalence of spirorchiidiasis in sea turtles, disease severity varies regionally. This report provides a detailed demonstration of the pathology of spirorchiidiasis in sea turtles from Northeast Asia.

BACKGROUND: Overactive bladder (OAB) is a common condition in middle-aged and older women. It has been reported to be potentially linked to cognitive decline, particularly in older adults. This study investigated the association between OAB symptoms and cognitive impairment in middle-aged women. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study had a sample of 1652 women (mean age 49.3 ± 2.8 years) who were not taking medication for either urinary tract infection or OAB. OAB symptoms and cognitive function were evaluated by self-administered questionnaires: the Overactive Bladder Symptom Score and the Alzheimer's disease 8. Logistic regression models estimated prevalence ratios (PRs) with 95 % confidence intervals (CI) for cognitive impairment according to the presence/absence of OAB. Mediation analyses assessed the impact of poor sleep quality on this association. RESULTS: Cognitive impairment was more prevalent in women with OAB than in those without OAB (multivariable-adjusted PR: 1.88 [95 % CI: 1.52-2.24]). Women experiencing nocturia (≥twice a night), urinary urgency at least once a week, and urgency urinary incontinence at least once a week had multivariable-adjusted PRs (95 % CI) for cognitive impairment of 2.08 (1.50-2.65), 2.12 (1.66-2.58), and 1.75 (1.17-2.34), respectively. Poor sleep quality mediated 10.81 % [95 % CI: 4.55-19.44 %] of the relationship between OAB and cognitive impairment. CONCLUSIONS: Among middle-aged women not taking OAB medications, OAB symptoms were associated with cognitive impairment, partly because of poor sleep quality. Further research is needed to determine whether early screening of patients with OAB can help identify those susceptible to cognitive impairment associated with OAB medication and if preventive measures should be targeted at this group.

This study explores how elevated carbon dioxide (CO2) levels affects the growth and defense mechanisms of plants. We focused on Aristolochia contorta Bunge (Aristolochiaceae), a wild plant that exhibits growth reduction under elevated CO2 in the previous study. The plant has Sericinus montela Gray (Papilionidae) as a specialist herbivore. By analyzing primary metabolites, understanding both the growth and defense response of plants to herbivory under elevated CO2 conditions is possible. The experiment was conducted across four groups, combining two CO2 concentration conditions (ambient CO2 and elevated CO2) with two herbivory conditions (herbivory treated and untreated). Although many plants exhibit increased growth under elevated CO2 levels, A. contorta exhibited reduced growth with lower height, dry weight, and total leaf area. Under herbivory, A. contorta triggered both localized and systemic responses. More primary metabolites exhibited significant differences due to herbivory treatment in systemic tissue than local leaves that herbivory was directly treated. Herbivory under elevated CO2 level triggered more significant responses in primary metabolites (17 metabolites) than herbivory under ambient CO2 conditions (five metabolites). Several defense-related metabolites exhibited higher concentrations in the roots and lower concentrations in the leaves in response to the herbivory treatment in the elevated CO2 group. This suggests a potential intensification of defensive responses in the underground parts of the plant under elevated CO2 levels. Our findings underscore the importance of considering both abiotic and biotic factors in understanding plant responses to environmental changes. The adaptive strategies of A. contorta suggest a complex response mechanism to elevated CO2 and herbivory pressures.

Callose, a ß-1,3-glucan plant cell wall polymer, regulates symplasmic channel size at plasmodesmata (PD) and plays a crucial role in a variety of plant processes. However, elucidating the molecular mechanism of PD callose homeostasis is limited. We screened and identified an Arabidopsis mutant plant with excessive callose deposition at PD and found that the mutated gene was α1-COP, a member of the coat protein I (COPI) coatomer complex. We report that loss of function of α1-COP elevates the callose accumulation at PD by affecting subcellular protein localization of callose degradation enzyme PdBG2. This process is linked to the functions of ERH1, an inositol phosphoryl ceramide synthase, and glucosylceramide synthase through physical interactions with the α1-COP protein. Additionally, the loss of function of α1-COP alters the subcellular localization of ERH1 and GCS proteins, resulting in a reduction of GlcCers and GlcHCers molecules, which are key sphingolipid (SL) species for lipid raft formation. Our findings suggest that α1-COP protein, together with SL modifiers controlling lipid raft compositions, regulates the subcellular localization of GPI-anchored PDBG2 proteins, and hence the callose turnover at PD and symplasmic movement of biomolecules. Our findings provide the first key clue to link the COPI-mediated intracellular trafficking pathway to the callose-mediated intercellular signaling pathway through PD.

The present study firstly reports surface sediment from the subsea depth of 200 m as a potential natural peloid. The fine-silt sediment exhibited a consistent clay mineral composition dominated by illite, chlorite, kaolinite, and diatomite. The most abundant clay mineral was illite/mica, with other minerals loosely packed in a face-to-face orientation. The thermal conductivity, specific heat capacity, and cation-exchange capacity of the sediment were in the range 0.855-0.885 W/m K, 2.718-2.821 J/g °C, and 23.06-32.96 cmol/kg, respectively. The concentrations of most toxic elements in the sediment were considerably lower than the limits set by domestic cosmetic regulations and other international standards. The analyzed samples exhibited similar properties to those of previously reported peloids, thus making them suitable for use in the field of pelotherapy; furthermore, the consistency in data across a wide peloid-distribution area is expected to enable economically viable mining. Future investigations should aim to to evaluate the long-term effects on the skin, the bioavailability of potentially hazardous substances, and the therapeutic efficacy for various skin conditions.

BACKGROUND: This study evaluates the effectiveness of Therapeutic Hypothermia (TH) in treating poor-grade aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), focusing on functional outcomes, mortality, and complications such as vasospasm, delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI), and hydrocephalus. METHODS: Adhering to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020 guidelines, a comprehensive literature search was conducted across multiple databases, including Medline, Embase, and Cochrane Central, up to November 2023. Nine studies involving 368 patients were selected based on eligibility criteria focusing on TH in poor-grade SAH patients. Data extraction, bias assessment, and evidence certainty were systematically performed. RESULTS: The primary analysis of unfavorable outcomes in 271 participants showed no significant difference between the TH and standard care groups (risk ratio [RR], 0.87). However, a significant reduction in vasospasm was observed in the TH group (RR, 0.63) among 174 participants. No significant differences were found in DCI, hydrocephalus, and mortality rates in the respective participant groups. CONCLUSIONS: TH did not significantly improve primary unfavorable outcomes in poor-grade SAH patients. However, the reduction in vasospasm rates indicates potential specific benefits. The absence of significant findings in other secondary outcomes and mortality highlights the need for further research to better understand TH's role in treating this patient population.

Background: Open thoracotomy has been the traditional surgical approach for patients with bronchogenic cysts (BCs). This study aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) compared to open surgery for the treatment of BCs in adults. Methods: This single-institution, retrospective cohort study included 117 consecutive adult patients who underwent VATS (group A) or open surgery (group B) for BC resection between February 2019 and January 2023. Data regarding clinical history, operation duration, length of hospital stay, 30-day mortality, and recurrence during follow-up were collected and analyzed. Results: Of the total cohort, 103 (88.0%) patients underwent VATS, while 14 (12.0%) patients underwent open surgery. Patients' age in group B were much older than group A (P=0.014), and no significant differences in other demographic and baseline clinical characteristics were observed between the groups. The VATS group had shorter median operation duration (96 vs. 149.5 min, P<0.001) and shorter mean length of hospital stay (5.0±5.5 vs. 8.6±4.0 days, P<0.001). One death occurred in the open surgery group. During a median follow-up of 34 (interquartile range, 20.8-42.5) months, no instances of BC recurrence were observed in either group. Conclusions: Compared to open surgery, VATS is also a safe and efficacious approach for treating BCs in adults. What's more, VATS offered shorter operative times and hospital stays. Considering the minimally invasive, VATS may be a better choice in most patients with bronchial cysts.
