RESUMEN

The current study evaluated the effectiveness of intravenous ketamine treatment for suicidality in a community-based clinical sample of 295 outpatients (mean age=  40.37; 58.6 % male). We conducted growth mixture modeling to estimate latent classes of changes in symptoms of suicidality measured by the Concise Health Risk Tracking - Self-Report (CHRT-SR) across five infusions in a two-week course of treatment. Best-fit indices indicated three trajectory groups demonstrating non-linear, quadratic changes in CHRT-SR scores during ketamine treatment. The largest group of patients (n=  170, 57.6 %) had moderate CHRT-SR scores at baseline and showed gradual improvement during treatment. The other two groups of patients had severe CHRT-SR scores at baseline and diverged into one group with no improvement throughout treatment (n = 63, 21  %) and one group with rapid improvement (n = 62, 21 %). Of the clinical and demographic variables available and tested, only higher scores pertaining to active thoughts of death and/or plan were found to predict which of the patients with severe CHRT-SR scores at baseline would not benefit from treatment. The present study provides an important contribution to the knowledge of ketamine's effects on symptoms related to suicide over time. providing support for the possible effectiveness of ketamine in a proportion of patients.

Aerosol jet printing (AJP) is a new non-contact direct writing technique designed to achieve precise and intricate patterns on various substrates. Specifically, the pneumatic AJP process breaks down the ink into fine particles, significantly reducing the risk of nozzle clogging and rendering it highly advantageous for industrial applications. This paper focuses on the optimization of the line electrode formation process using soluble silver clusters as the conductive ink, along with the aerosol formation procedure. The main parameters of the AJP process, namely sheath flow rate, atomizer flow rate, and dispensing speed, were identified and examined for their influence on line width and resistivity. Through this analysis, an operability window, including optimized conditions for printing high-quality lines using the AJP process, was established, along with a regression equation enabling the statistical estimation of line width. In summary, the outcomes of this investigation underscore the feasibility of an integrated printing system capable of precision control over line width, achieved through the optimization of AJP process parameters. Furthermore, it was established that pneumatic AJP offers robust process stability. The practical applicability of the proposed optimization techniques was assessed, highlighting their potential utilization in electrode formation processes within the electronic and display industry.

We configured a long-distance ranging apparatus to test the principle of dual-comb time-of-flight measurement using ultrashort lasers. Emphasis was given to the evaluation of open-air performance quantitatively in terms of the measurement resolution and stability. The test results revealed that our dual-comb asynchronous optical pulse sampling permits micrometer-resolved ranging with a repeatability of 2.05 µm over a 648 m distance in dry weather conditions. Further atmospheric effects were evaluated in three different weather conditions with corresponding Allan deviations. Finally, the capability of simultaneous determination of multiple targets was verified with the potential of advanced industrial applications, such as manufacturing, surveying, metrology, and geodesy.

Background: Non-nutritive suck (NNS) is used to promote ororhythmic patterning and assess oral feeding readiness in preterm infants in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). While time domain measures of NNS are available in real time at cribside, our understanding of suck pattern generation in the frequency domain is limited. The aim of this study is to model the development of NNS in the frequency domain using Fourier and machine learning (ML) techniques in extremely preterm infants (EPIs). Methods: A total of 117 EPIs were randomized to a pulsed or sham orocutaneous intervention during tube feedings 3 times/day for 4 weeks, beginning at 30 weeks post-menstrual age (PMA). Infants were assessed 3 times/week for NNS dynamics until they attained 100% oral feeding or NICU discharge. Digitized NNS signals were processed in the frequency domain using two transforms, including the Welch power spectral density (PSD) method, and the Yule-Walker PSD method. Data analysis proceeded in two stages. Stage 1: ML longitudinal cluster analysis was conducted to identify groups (classes) of infants, each showing a unique pattern of change in Welch and Yule-Walker calculations during the interventions. Stage 2: linear mixed modeling (LMM) was performed for the Welch and Yule-Walker dependent variables to examine the effects of gestationally-aged (GA), PMA, sex (male, female), patient type [respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD)], treatment (NTrainer, Sham), intervention phase [1, 2, 3], cluster class, and phase-by-class interaction. Results: ML of Welch PSD method and Yule-Walker PSD method measures revealed three membership classes of NNS growth patterns. The dependent measures peak_Hz, PSD amplitude, and area under the curve (AUC) are highly dependent on PMA, but show little relation to respiratory status (RDS, BPD) or somatosensory intervention. Thus, neural regulation of NNS in the frequency domain is significantly different for each identified cluster (classes A, B, C) during this developmental period. Conclusions: Efforts to increase our knowledge of the evolution of the suck central pattern generator (sCPG) in preterm infants, including NNS rhythmogenesis will help us better understand the observed phenotypes of NNS production in both the frequency and time domains. Knowledge of those features of the NNS which are relatively invariant vs. other features which are modifiable by experience will likewise inform more effective treatment strategies in this fragile population.

BACKGROUND: The goal of this study was to replicate previous findings of three distinct treatment response pathways associated with repeated intravenous (IV) ketamine infusions among patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). METHODS: We conducted growth mixture modeling to estimate latent classes of change in depression (Quick Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology-Self Report, QIDS-SR) across six treatment visits in 298 patients with MDD treated with IV ketamine in an outpatient community clinic. Mean age was 40.36 and patients were primarily male (58.4 %). The sample had relatively severe depression (QIDS-SR = 16.61) at pre-treatment and the majority had not responded to at least two prior medications. RESULTS: Best-fit indices indicated three trajectory groups to optimally demonstrate non-linear, quadratic changes in depressive symptoms during ketamine treatment. Two groups had severe depression at baseline but diverged into a group of modest improvement over the treatment course (n = 78) and a group of patients with rapid improvement (n = 103). A third group had moderate depression at baseline with moderate improvement during the treatment course (n = 117). Additional planned trajectory comparisons showed that suicidality at entry was higher in the high depression groups and that change in suicidality severity followed that of depression. LIMITATIONS: This was a retrospective analysis of a naturalistic sample. Patients were unblinded and more heterogenous than those included in most controlled clinical trial samples. CONCLUSIONS: This replication study in an independent community-based ketamine clinic sample revealed similar response trajectories, with only about a third of depressed patients benefitting substantially from an acute induction course of ketamine infusions.

RESUMEN

This study provides a novel approach to understand human perception changes in their experiences of and interactions with public greenspaces during the early months of COVID-19. Using social media data and machine learning techniques, the study delivers new understandings of how people began to feel differently about their experiences compared to pre-COVID times. The study illuminates a renewed appreciation of nature as well as an emerging but prominent pattern of emotional and spiritual experiences expressed through a social media platform. Given that most park and recreational studies have almost exclusively examined whether park use increased or decreased during the pandemic, this research provides meaningful implications beyond the simple extensional visit pattern and lends weight to the growing evidences on changing perceptions over and the positive psychological impacts of nature. The study highlights the preeminent roles parks and greenspaces play during the pandemic and guides a new direction in future park development to support more natural elements and nature-oriented experiences from which emotional and spiritual well-being outcomes can be drawn.

Materials that can switch adhesive properties based on external stimuli are required in several industries for temporary bonding or transfer processes. Previously studied materials achieve this under restricted conditions (hydration, heat, and long switching times), and some materials have limitations related to reuse because of irreversible reactions or residue formation on substrates. Herein, a rapid photoresponsive switchable pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) fabricated using an acrylic polymer and an aliphatic monomer containing azobenzene is reported. The adhesion force of the proposed PSA can be switched by photoisomerizing the azobenzene moiety. The process induces the transition of surface energy and modulus of the PSA. Ultraviolet and visible light irradiation can switch the probe tack force from 200 to 4 kPa within 15-30 s. Adhesion switching is possible in a state wherein the PSA remains adhered to a substrate. Mini-LEDs are selectively transferred from the carrier PSA to a polydimethylsiloxane substrate following the process of partial adhesion switching of the PSA. The novel and switchable PSA, which exhibits a selective and repeatable adhesion switching property and high switching ratio when stimulated by light stimuli, may be potentially used to realize the mini-LED or micro-LED transfer processes.

Multilateration tracking systems (MLTSs) are used in industrial three-dimensional (3D) coordinate measuring applications. For high-precision measurement, system parameters must be calibrated properly in advance. For an MLTS using absolute distance measurement (ADM), the conventional self-calibration method significantly reduces estimation efficiency because all system parameters are estimated simultaneously using a complicated residual function. This paper presents a novel self-calibration method that optimizes ADM to reduce the number of system parameters via highly precise and separate estimations of dead paths. Therefore, the residual function to estimate the tracking station locations can be simplified. By applying a suitable mathematical procedure and solving the initial guess problem without the aid of an external device, estimation accuracy of the system parameters is significantly improved. In three self-calibration experiments, with ADM repeatability of approximately 3.4 µm, the maximum deviation of the system parameters estimated by the proposed self-calibration method was 68.6 µm, while the maximum deviation estimated by the conventional self-calibration method was 711.9 µm. Validation of 3D coordinate measurements in a 1000 mm × 1000 mm × 1000 mm volume showed good agreement between the proposed ADM-based MLTS and a commercial laser tracker, where the maximum difference based on the standard deviation was 17.7 µm. Conversely, the maximum difference was 98.8 µm using the conventional self-calibration method. These results confirmed the efficiency and feasibility of the proposed self-calibration method.

Ultrashort pulse lasers are emerging as an advanced tool of distance measurement, with their unique temporal and spectral characteristics being extended to diverse principles of absolute ranging and instrumentation. Here, a systematic methodology is presented for absolute ranging by means of the time-of-flight measurement of ultrashort light pulses using dual-comb asynchronous optical sampling. Based on an elaborate uncertainty analysis, influencing system parameters such as the pulse duration, repetition rate, and averaging time are optimized to achieve a sub-µm measurement accuracy. The absolute ranging system developed in this study demonstrates a combined standard uncertainty of 0.986 µm for a 0.5 ms averaging over a distance range of 3.0 m, with a further reduction to 0.056 µm when the averaging time is increased to 0.5 s. The outstanding performance leads to unprecedented multitarget applications: machine feed control with thermal error compensation in real time as well as the nondestructive inspection of multilens assembly in a production line.

Early discharge or reduced length of stay for inpatient psychiatric patients is related to increased readmission rates and worse clinical outcomes including increased risk for suicide. Trajectories of mental illness outcomes have been identified as an important method for predicting the optimal length of stay but the distinguishing factors that separate trajectories remain unclear. We sought to identify the distinct classes of patients who demonstrated similar trajectories of mental illness over the course of inpatient treatment, and we explore the patient characteristics associated with these mental illness trajectories. We used data (N = 3406) from an inpatient psychiatric hospital with intermediate lengths of stay. Using growth mixture modeling, latent mental illness scores were derived from six mental illness indicators: psychological flexibility, emotion regulation problems, anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, and disability. The patients were grouped into three distinct trajectory classes: (1) High-Risk, Rapid Improvement (HR-RI); (2) Low-Risk, Gradual Improvement (LR-GI); and (3) High-Risk, Gradual Improvement (HR-GI). The HR-GI was significantly younger than the other two classes. The HR-GI had significantly more female patients than males, while the LR-GI had more male patients than females. Our findings indicated that younger females had more severe mental illness at admission and only gradual improvement during the inpatient treatment period, and they remained in treatment for longer lengths of stay, than older males.

We present a fiber femtosecond laser oscillator that incorporates a pair of chirped fiber Bragg gratings (CFBGs) to augment the cavity length elongation produced by a PZT actuator. With a magnification factor of 18.2, the CFBG pair offers a 4.44 mm cavity length extension, providing a 25.59 kHz tuning range of the repetition rate from a 41.56 MHz nominal value without loss of mode locking. The extended tuning range enhances the performance of comb stabilization in uncontrolled environments and pulse-to-pulse interferometry for step height measurements.

We report a space radiation test performed on a semiconductor-type saturable absorber (SA) for its use in outer space as a key mode-locking component of fiber-based femtosecond pulse lasers. Gamma-ray effects on the nonlinear transmission behavior of the SA were evaluated by configuring a pump-probe experiment with femtosecond light pulses. Test results revealed that when the total ionizing dose of gamma-ray exposure reaches 120 krad, the SA encounters a sudden failure with its modulation depth and saturation fluence deteriorating from 11% to 6% and 40 to 110 µJ/cm2, respectively. On the other hand, no notable degradation was observed in its temporal response of absorption recovery.

Supercontinuum generation is performed using femtosecond laser pulses produced by combining two distinct mode-locking mechanisms of nonlinear polarization evolution with saturable absorption on an Er-doped fiber oscillator. The generated supercontinuum yields a high level of spectral visibility of 93%, without the presence of spontaneous emission of post-amplification, being well suited for precision spectroscopy, broadband interferometry, and coherent telecommunications.

Fast, precise 3-D measurement of discontinuous step-structures fabricated on microelectronic products is essential for quality assurance of semiconductor chips, flat panel displays, and photovoltaic cells. Optical surface profilers of low-coherence interferometry have long been used for the purpose, but the vertical scanning range and speed are limited by the micro-actuators available today. Besides, the lateral field-of-view extendable for a single measurement is restricted by the low spatial coherence of broadband light sources. Here, we cope with the limitations of the conventional low-coherence interferometer by exploiting unique characteristics of femtosecond laser pulses, i.e., low temporal but high spatial coherence. By scanning the pulse repetition rate with direct reference to the Rb atomic clock, step heights of ~69.6 µm are determined with a repeatability of 10.3 nm. The spatial coherence of femtosecond pulses provides a large field-of-view with superior visibility, allowing for a high volume measurement rate of ~24,000 mm3/s.

3-D profiles of discontinuous surfaces patterned with high step structures are measured using four wavelengths generated by phase-locking to the frequency comb of an Er-doped fiber femtosecond laser stabilized to the Rb atomic clock. This frequency-comb-referenced method of multi-wavelength interferometry permits extending the phase non-ambiguity range by a factor of 64,500 while maintaining the sub-wavelength measurement precision of single-wavelength interferometry. Experimental results show a repeatability of 3.13 nm (one-sigma) in measuring step heights of 1800, 500, and 70 µm. The proposed method is accurate enough for the standard calibration of gauge blocks and also fast to be suited for the industrial inspection of microelectronics products.

We propose an all-fiber-based multi-channel optical scheme that enables simultaneous generation of multiple continuous-wave laser wavelengths with stabilization to the frequency comb of a femtosecond laser. The intention is to produce highly stable, accurate wavelength channels with immunity to environmental disturbance so as to enhance the transmission capacity of dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) communications. Generated wavelengths lie over a wide spectral range of 5 THz about 1550 nm, each yielding a narrow linewidth of less than 24 kHz with an absolute position uncertainty of ~2.24 × 10¹² (10 s averaging) traceable directly to the atomic Rb clock.

We report on an Er-doped fiber oscillator that produces 146 fs pulses with 156 mW average power at a repetition rate of 49.9 MHz. The pulse energy reaches 3.13 nJ, surpassing the conventional power limit in the dispersion-managed soliton regime. Such high pulse power is obtained by devising a hybrid mode-locking scheme that combines saturable absorption with nonlinear polarization evolution. The oscillator also offers excellent temporal purity in the generated pulses with high power, providing a robust fiber-based frequency comb well suited for industrial uses.

A low-noise fiber frequency comb is demonstrated to improve the frequency accuracy and linewidth by suppressing the phase noise caused by the nonlinear self-phase modulation as well as the amplified spontaneous emission within the Er-doped fiber amplifier. The linewidth of the carrier-envelop- offset signal measures less than 1.9 mHz and the frequency stability well follows the reference Rb clock. This achievement will facilitate the use of the fiber frequency comb for industrial applications to precision near-infrared spectroscopy, frequency calibration, optical clocks and length metrology.

We report that the Tm:Ho-doped fiber can be utilized to improve the frequency stabilization of the Er-doped fiber comb. This rare-earth doped fiber provides photon absorption at 1.2 microm and 1.7 microm wavelengths together with emission at wavelengths between 1.8 microm to 2.1 microm. This unique combination of the absorption and emission regions constructively redistributes the spectral power of the supercontinuum generated by a highly nonlinear fiber to detect the carrier-envelope-offset frequency (f(ceo)) via a self-referencing f-2f interferometer. As a result, the signal to noise (S/N) ratio of the detected f(ceo) signal increases by 10 dB, thereby increasing the potential of enhancing the long-term frequency stability of the fiber frequency comb.
