RESUMEN

Ammonia recovery from industrial wastewater using membrane contactor processes is emerging as a promising method owing to the diverse applications of ammonia. This study uniquely addressed ammonia recovery from coke plant wastewater, which is challenging due to the presence of numerous toxic and volatile phenolic compounds. Experiments were conducted using a synthetic coke plant effluent to assess the effects of various pH levels and temperatures on ammonia recovery. Specifically, the aim was to achieve high-purity ammonia recovery while minimizing the permeation of phenolic compounds. The results demonstrate that ammonia recovery in the membrane contactor processes is highly efficient, even in the presence of phenolic compounds. During temperature variations at 25 °C and 40 °C, the recovery of ammonia increased from 42.36% to 52.97% at pH 11. Additionally, increasing the pH of a feed solution from 7 to 12 significantly increased the ammonia content to 58.3%. At this pH, the recovered ammonia was of exceptional purity (>99%), with phenol, p-Cresol, and 2,4-xylenol present at negligible concentrations (0.001%, 0.002%, and 0.004%, respectively). This was attributed to the ionization of phenolic compounds at higher pH levels, which prevents their permeation through the hydrophobic membrane. The estimated cost analysis revealed that the membrane contactor process at pH 12 was approximately 1.41 times more cost-effective than conventional air-stripping processes over eight years of operating period (pH-12 membrane contactor: $19.79; pH-12 air stripping: $23.75). This study provides a detailed analysis of the optimal conditions for selective ammonia recovery from complex wastewater, highlighting both effective treatment and sustainable resource recovery and offering a superior alternative to traditional methods.

In the ongoing battle against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), understanding its pathogenesis and developing effective treatments remain critical challenges. The creation of animal models that closely replicate human infection stands as a critical step forward in this research. Here, we present a genetically engineered mouse model with specifically-humanized knock-in ACE2 (hiACE2) receptors. This model, featuring nine specific amino acid substitutions for enhanced interaction with the viral spike protein, enables efficient severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 replication in respiratory organs without detectable infection in the central nervous system. Moreover, it mirrors the age- and sex-specific patterns of morbidity and mortality, as well as the immunopathological features observed in human COVID-19 cases. Our findings further demonstrate that the depletion of eosinophils significantly reduces morbidity and mortality, depending on the infecting viral dose and the sex of the host. This reduction is potentially achieved by decreasing the pathogenic contribution of eosinophil-mediated inflammation, which is strongly correlated with neutrophil activity in human patients. This underscores the model's utility in studying the immunopathological aspects of COVID-19 and represents a significant advancement in COVID-19 modeling. It offers a valuable tool for testing vaccines and therapeutics, enhancing our understanding of the disease mechanisms and potentially guiding more targeted and effective treatments.

Background: Traditional medicine (TM) plays a significant role in healthcare either as part of the primary healthcare system or as an adjunct to conventional medicine. This study aimed to map systematic reviews (SRs) of TM modalities across health conditions and identify gaps in the research literature to facilitate priority setting in future TM research. Methods: We searched 17 databases from January 2018 to December 2022. Reviewers in pairs independently performed the database search, screened each record for inclusion, extracted data, and performed quality assessments using the AMSTAR 2 - A Measurement Tool to Assess systematic Reviews. To be included in this evidence map, the studies had to be SRs of clinical studies that evaluated the effectiveness of a TM modalities. The included SRs were analyzed according to TM modality, ICD-11 disease classification, and health outcomes, and visualized using graphical plots. Results: We retrieved 241,509 records. After excluding duplicate records, 181,616 titles and abstracts were screened and 20,856 records were selected for full-text assessment, of which 18,137 records were further excluded. The final 2719 included SRs were primarily in adults (2591) with only 128 SRs in the pediatric population. The most commonly evaluated health conditions were diseases of the digestive system, circulatory system, and genitourinary system, with herbal medicine (n = 1867) and acupuncture (n = 471) being the most investigated TM modalities in treating these illnesses. Based on AMSTAR 2 criteria, the methodology quality of the included SRs is considerably low. Conclusion: This evidence map provides a comprehensive overview of the extent and nature of the available research onTM modalities across health conditions. It provides an initial step towards characterizing the global evidence base and outlining gaps in the existing evidence. We regard this study as laying the basis for future research of TM modalities. Background: Infections of Coronavirus Disease-2019 (COVID-19) can cause long-term effects known as long COVID. This pilot study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of a clinical study as well as the efficacy and safety of traditional East Asian herbal medicines in alleviating fatigue and cognitive dysfunction in patients with long COVID. Methods: This prospective pilot study investigated the use of three types of herbal medicines, Bojungikgi-tang (BIT), Kyungok-go (KOG), and Cheonwangbosim-dan (CBD), for a 12-week period as potential treatments for fatigue and cognitive dysfunction in patients with long COVID. Forty-five patients with long COVID were recruited, and one of three drugs was given based on the patient's symptoms and pattern identification. The effect of herbal medications on fatigue and cognitive function outcomes was assessed over a 36-week period, with patient adherence closely monitored. Results: After 12 weeks of herbal drug administration, fatigue symptoms improved significantly across all groups, with treatment success rates of 80 %, 53.33 %, and 46.67 % in the BIT, KOG, and CBD groups, respectively. However, cognitive dysfunction symptoms showed less improvement, with treatment success rates of 40 %, 46.67 %, and 13.33 % in the BIT, KOG, and CBD groups, respectively. All adverse events reported were mild and unrelated to the medication. The study design was found to be feasible with high medication adherence. Conclusions: This study demonstrated the feasibility of conducting a clinical trial with three herbal medicines to treat long COVID symptoms like fatigue and cognitive dysfunction.

Inhibitors of the epithermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) were screened from an autodisplayed Fv-antibody library using an anti-EGF antibody. The Fv-antibody library was expressed on the outer membrane of Escherichia coli, which corresponds to the heavy chain VH region of immunoglobulin G. The library was constructed by randomizing the CDR3 region of expressed VH regions (11 amino acid residues) by site-directed mutagenesis. Using an anti-EGF antibody as a screening probe, amino acid sequences (CDR3 region) with antibody binding affinity were screened from the Fv-antibody library. These amino acid sequences were considered to have similar chemical properties to EGF, which can bind to EGFR. Two autodisplayed clones with Fv-antibodies against EGFR were screened from the Fv-antibody library, and the screened Fv-antibodies were expressed as soluble proteins. The binding affinity (KD) was estimated using an SPR biosensor, and the inhibitory activity of expressed Fv-antibodies was observed for PANC-1 pancreatic tumor cells and T98G glioblastoma cells using Western blot analysis of proteins in the EGFR-mediated signaling pathway. The viability of PANC-1 and T98G cells was observed to decrease via the inhibitory activity of expressed Fv-antibodies. Finally, interactions between Fv-antibodies and EGFR were analyzed by using molecular docking simulations.

Despite the importance of the stability of the 2D catalysts in harsh electrolyte solutions, most studies have focused on improving the catalytic performance of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) catalysts rather than the sustainability of hydrogen evolution. In previous studies, the vulnerability of MoS2 crystals is reported that the moisture and oxygen molecules can cause the oxidation of MoS2 crystals, accelerating the degradation of crystal structure. Therefore, optimization of catalytic stability is crucial for approaching practical applications in 2D catalysts. Here, it is proposed that monolayered MoS2 catalysts passivated with an atomically thin hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) layer can effectively sustain hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and demonstrate the ultra-high current density (500 mA cm⁻2 over 11 h) and super stable (64 h at 150 mA cm⁻2) catalytic performance. It is further confirmed with density functional theory (DFT) calculations that the atomically thin h-BN layer effectively prevents direct adsorption of water/acid molecules while allowing the protons to be adsorbed/penetrated. The selective penetration of protons and prevention of crystal structure degradation lead to maintained catalytic activity and maximized catalytic stability in the h-BN covered MoS2 catalysts. These findings propose a promising opportunity for approaching the practical application of 2D MoS2 catalysts having long-term stability at high-current operation.

Using data from the 2022 Korea Community Health Survey (n = 13 320), this study investigated helmet use and related factors among Korean adults using personal mobility devices, without distinguishing between private and hired users. Among mobility device users, 32.1% responded that they always wore a helmet. The proportion of helmet use was 35.2% among men, 25.8% among women, 29.2% among those aged 19-44 years, 42.3% among those aged 45-64 years and 26.6% among those aged 65 years or older. Furthermore, those who drank less frequently and were physically active were more likely to wear helmets. Moreover, people who always wore a seat belt when driving a car or sitting in the rear seat and people who always wore a helmet when riding a motorcycle were more likely to wear a helmet while using electric personal mobility devices. Approximately one-third of users always wore a helmet. The helmet-wearing rate was related to general characteristics such as gender and education level, and to safety behaviors such as wearing a seat belt when driving a car, sitting in the rear seat of a car, or when riding a motorcycle. In addition to considering personal characteristics investigated in this study, the helmet-wearing rate should be improved through policies or systems at the national or regional levels.

INTRODUCTION: Fatigue is a common symptom observed in post-cancer treatment, yet its underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. Acupuncture has been employed to alleviate cancer-related fatigue (CRF); however, its effectiveness in addressing associated comorbidities that may influence fatigue is also poorly understood. This study represents the first investigation to use acupuncture as an intervention for fatigue in breast cancer survivors within a Norwegian cohort. The study will employ questionnaires to evaluate various facets of fatigue. As a pragmatic trial, it statistically assesses its clinical relevance, documents adverse events and evaluates the cost-effectiveness of the acupuncture treatment. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This assessor-blinded, pragmatic, randomised, mixed method, controlled trial with two parallel arms aims to evaluate the effectiveness, safety and cost-effectiveness of acupuncture. It will recruit 250 participants presented with CRF for 6 months or longer. Patients will be randomly allocated either to acupuncture and usual care (n=125) or to usual care alone (n=125). Acupuncture treatments (12 in total) are to be given within 12 weeks. The statistician who will analyse the data will be blinded to group allocation. The primary outcome will be changes in CRF measured by the Chalder fatigue scale. Measurements will be taken 12 weeks and 6 months after randomisation. The secondary outcomes include patient-reported outcomes of pain, anxiety, depression, hot flashes, insomnia and sleepiness. Health-related quality of life and economic evaluation will also be conducted 12 weeks and 6 months after randomisation. Nested within this randomised controlled trial are two qualitative studies and one sub-study measuring biomarkers (C-reactive protein, interleukin (IL)-1, IL-6, tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) and aPL in addition to the current genotype genes TNF-308 and IL-6-174) from blood samples (n=80). Such biomarkers can potentially address changes in CRF. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: Ethical approval of this study has been granted by the Regional Committees for Medical and Health Research Ethics (REC southeast ID number: 112285). Written informed consent will be obtained from all participants. The outcomes of the trial will be disseminated through peer-reviewed publications. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: NCT04418115.

Walking can have a positive impact on cognitive function in adolescents. This study aimed to compare the effects of walking with sneakers and barefoot on cognitive ability in adolescents. Fifty-nine adolescent male students were included in the study and assigned to the control (n = 20), sneaker (n = 19), and barefoot (n = 20) groups. The barefoot and sneakers group performed a 40-min walking exercise four times a week for 12 weeks during the morning physical activity time, while the control group performed self-study. Electroencephalogram (EEG) and brain activity variables were measured before and after the exercise program. The results showed that after 12 weeks, the barefoot group had a significant decrease in Gamma and H-beta waves and a significant increase in sensorimotor rhythm (SMR) and Alpha waves. Conversely, the control group showed a significant decrease in SMR waves and increase in Theta waves. The sneaker group showed a significant decrease in SMR waves alone. In an eyes-open resting state, the barefoot group showed a significant increase in H-beta, M-beta, SMR, and Alpha waves. The barefoot group also had a significant increase in cognitive speed and concentration and a significant decrease in brain stress. Taken together, barefoot walking can effectively enhance cognitive ability in adolescents, as demonstrated by the significant variation in EEG activity. This research highlights the potential benefits of barefoot walking as a simple and effective form of exercise for enhancing cognitive function in adolescents.

African swine fever, caused by African swine fever virus (ASFV), is a highly contagious and fatal disease that poses a significant threat to the global pig industry. The limited information on ASFV pathogenesis and ASFV-host interactions has recently prompted numerous transcriptomic studies. However, most of these studies have focused on elucidating the transcriptome profiles of ASFV-infected porcine alveolar macrophages in vitro. Here, we analyzed dynamic transcriptional patterns in vivo in nine organ tissues (spleen, submandibular lymph node, mesenteric lymph node, inguinal lymph node, tonsils, lungs, liver, kidneys, and heart) obtained from pigs in the early stages of ASFV infection (1 and 3 d after viremia). We observed rapid spread of ASFV to the spleen after viremia, followed by broad transmission to the liver and lungs and subsequently, the submandibular and inguinal lymph nodes. Profound variations in gene expression patterns were observed across all organs and at all time-points, providing an understanding of the distinct defence strategies employed by each organ against ASFV infection. All ASFV-infected organs exhibited a collaborative response, activating immune-associated genes such as S100A8, thereby triggering a pro-inflammatory cytokine storm and interferon activation. Functional analysis suggested that ASFV exploits the PI3K-Akt signalling pathway to evade the host immune system. Overall, our findings provide leads into the mechanisms underlying pathogenesis and host immune responses in different organs during the early stages of infection, which can guide further explorations, aid the development of efficacious antiviral strategies against ASFV, and identify valuable candidate gene targets for vaccine development.

Accurate measurement of abdominal aortic aneurysm is essential for selecting suitable stent-grafts to avoid complications of endovascular aneurysm repair. However, the conventional image-based measurements are inaccurate and time-consuming. We introduce the automated workflow including semantic segmentation with active learning (AL) and measurement using an application programming interface of computer-aided design. 300 patients underwent CT scans, and semantic segmentation for aorta, thrombus, calcification, and vessels was performed in 60-300 cases with AL across five stages using UNETR, SwinUNETR, and nnU-Net consisted of 2D, 3D U-Net, 2D-3D U-Net ensemble, and cascaded 3D U-Net. 7 clinical landmarks were automatically measured for 96 patients. In AL stage 5, 3D U-Net achieved the highest dice similarity coefficient (DSC) with statistically significant differences (p < 0.01) except from the 2D-3D U-Net ensemble and cascade 3D U-Net. SwinUNETR excelled in 95% Hausdorff distance (HD95) with significant differences (p < 0.01) except from UNETR and 3D U-Net. DSC of aorta and calcification were saturated at stage 1 and 4, whereas thrombus and vessels were continuously improved at stage 5. The segmentation time between the manual and AL-corrected segmentation using the best model (3D U-Net) was reduced to 9.51 ± 1.02, 2.09 ± 1.06, 1.07 ± 1.10, and 1.07 ± 0.97 min for the aorta, thrombus, calcification, and vessels, respectively (p < 0.001). All measurement and tortuosity ratio measured - 1.71 ± 6.53 mm and - 0.15 ± 0.25. We developed an automated workflow with semantic segmentation and measurement, demonstrating its efficiency compared to conventional methods.

Ni-rich layered oxides have received significant attention as promising cathode materials for Li-ion batteries due to their high reversible capacity. However, intergranular and intragranular cracks form at high state-of-charge (SOC) levels exceeding 4.2 V (vs. Li/Li+), representing a prominent failure mechanism of Ni-rich layered oxides. The nanoscale crack formation at high SOC levels is attributed to a significant volume change resulting from a phase transition between the H2 and H3 phases. Herein, in contrast to the electrochemical crack formation at high SOC levels, another mechanism of chemical crack and pit formation on a nanoscale is directly evidenced in fully lithiated Ni-rich layered oxides (low SOC levels). This mechanism is associated with intergranular stress corrosion cracking, driven by chemical corrosion at elevated temperatures. The nanoscopic chemical corrosion behavior of Ni-rich layered oxides during aging at elevated temperatures is investigated using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, revealing that microcracks can develop through two distinct mechanisms: electrochemical cycling and chemical corrosion. Notably, chemical corrosion cracks can occur even in a fully discharged state (low SOC levels), whereas electrochemical cracks are observed only at high SOC levels. This finding provides a comprehensive understanding of the complex failure mechanisms of Ni-rich layered oxides and provides an opportunity to improve their electrochemical performance.

In this study, a one-step immunoassay for porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) based on Fv-antibodies and switching peptides was developed, and the assay results of PEDV were obtained by just mixing samples without any further reaction or washing steps. The Fv-antibodies with binding affinity to the spike protein of PEDV were screened from the Fv-antibody library using the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of the spike protein as a screening probe. Screened Fv-antibodies with binding affinities to the RBD antigen were expressed, and the binding constants (KD) were calculated to be 83-142 nM. The one-step immunoassay for the detection of PEDV was configured as a displacement immunoassay using a fluorescence-labeled switching peptide. The one-step immunoassay based on switching peptides was performed using PEDV, and the limit of detection (LOD) values for PEDV detection were estimated to be Ct = 39.7-36.4. Compared with the LOD value for a conventional lateral flow immunoassay (Ct = 33.0), the one-step immunoassay showed a remarkably improved LOD for the detection of PEDV. Finally, the interaction between the screened Fv-antibodies and the PEDV RBD was investigated using docking simulations and compared with the amino acid sequences of the receptors on host cells, such as aminopeptidase N (APN) and angiotensin-converting enzyme-2 (ACE-2).

Monocarboxylate transporter-1 (MCT-1) inhibitors were screened from the Fv-antibody library, which contained complementary determining region 3 with randomized amino acid sequences (11 residues) through site-directed mutagenesis. Fv-antibodies against MCT-1 were screened from the autodisplayed Fv-antibody library. Two clones were screened, and the binding affinity (KD) against MCT-1 was estimated using flow cytometry. The screened Fv-antibodies were expressed as soluble fusion proteins (Fv-1 and Fv-2) and the KD for MCT-1 was estimated using the SPR biosensor. The inhibitory activity of the expressed Fv-antibodies was observed in HEK293T and Jurkat cell lines by measuring intracellular pH and lactate accumulation. The level of cell viability in HEK293T and Jurkat cell lines was decreased by the inhibitory activity of the expressed Fv-antibodies. The binding properties of the Fv-antibodies to MCT-1 were analyzed using molecular docking simulations. Overall, the results showed that the screened Fv-antibodies against MCT-1 from the Fv-antibody library had high binding affinity and inhibitory activity against MCT-1, which could be used as potential therapeutic drug candidates for the MCT-1 inhibitor.

Accurate lesion diagnosis through computed tomography (CT) and advances in laparoscopic or robotic surgeries have increased partial nephrectomy survival rates. However, accurately marking the kidney resection area through the laparoscope is a prevalent challenge. Therefore, we fabricated and evaluated a 4D-printed kidney surgical guide (4DP-KSG) for laparoscopic partial nephrectomies based on CT images. The kidney phantom and 4DP-KSG were designed based on CT images from a renal cell carcinoma patient. 4DP-KSG were fabricated using shape-memory polymers. 4DP-KSG was compressed to a 10 mm thickness and restored to simulate laparoscopic port passage. The Bland-Altman evaluation assessed 4DP-KSG shape and marking accuracies before compression and after restoration with three operators. The kidney phantom's shape accuracy was 0.436 ± 0.333 mm, and the 4DP-KSG's shape accuracy was 0.818 ± 0.564 mm before compression and 0.389 ± 0.243 mm after restoration, with no significant differences. The 4DP-KSG marking accuracy was 0.952 ± 0.682 mm before compression and 0.793 ± 0.677 mm after restoration, with no statistical differences between operators (p = 0.899 and 0.992). In conclusion, our 4DP-KSG can be used for laparoscopic partial nephrectomies, providing precise and quantitative kidney tumor marking between operators before compression and after restoration.

This study aimed to investigate adsorption effects of electron scavengers (H2O2 and S2O82-) on oxidation performance for mineralization of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) in radiation treatment using catalysts (Al2O3, TiO2). Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2, 1 mM) as an electron scavenger showed weak adsorption onto catalysts (0.012 mmol g-1-Al2O3 and 0.004 mmol g-1-TiO2, respectively), leading to an increase in TOC removal efficiency of SMX within the absorbed dose of 30 kGy by 12.3% with Al2O3 and by 8.0% with TiO2. The weak adsorption of H2O2 onto the catalyst allowed it to act as an electron scavenger, promoting indirect decomposition reactions. However, high adsorption of S2O82- (1 mM) onto Al2O3 (0.266 mmol g-1-Al2O3) showed a decrease in TOC removal efficiency of SMX from 76.2% to 30.2% within the absorbed dose of 30 kGy. The high adsorption of S2O82- onto the catalyst inhibited direct decomposition reaction by reducing adsorption of SMX on catalysts. TOC removal efficiency for Al2O3 without electron scavengers in an acidic condition was higher than that in a neutral or alkaline condition. However, TOC removal efficiency for Al2O3 with S2O82- was higher in a neutral condition than in other pH conditions. This indicates that the pH of a solution plays a critical role in the catalytic oxidation performance by determining surface charges of catalysts and yield of reactive radicals produced from water radiolysis. In the radiocatalytic system, H2O2 enhances the oxidation performance of catalysts (Al2O3 and TiO2) over a wide pH range (3-11). Meanwhile, S2O82- is not suitable with Al2O3 in acidic conditions because of its strong adsorption onto Al2O3 in this study.

BACKGROUND: Acupuncture is known for a harmless treatment when administered by well-trained clinicians. However, multiple case reports of traumatic adverse events (AEs) related to acupuncture treatments continue to be published in literature. In this review, we evaluated the reporting quality and conducted causality assessments of case studies that have reported acupuncture-related traumatic AEs in Korea. METHODS: Eight databases were searched from their inception to January 2024. Only Korean case studies that reported traumatic AEs following acupuncture procedures were included without any language restrictions. Reporting quality was evaluated based on patient characteristics, AEs, and acupuncture practice. Causality was assessed using the modified WHO-UMC causality criteria. RESULTS: Twenty-eight studies were included from a total of 1,154 identified studies. The quality of reporting in the included studies was low overall. While the descriptions of patient characteristics and AEs were relatively well detailed, most information on acupuncture practice was not reported at all. During the causality assessment, only three (10.7%) studies were judged to be "certain". Twelve (42.9%) studies were "unassessable" because they inadequately described the information necessary for decision-making. It was practically difficult to establish the causality between acupuncture and AEs, as well as the appropriateness of acupuncture practice. CONCLUSIONS: Insufficient and inappropriate reporting was observed in most case studies reporting acupuncture-related traumatic AEs in Korea. To overcome these limitations, we have suggested tentative guidelines in the form of a set of items that should be reported by future authors who plan to publish case studies on acupuncture-related traumatic AEs in a clinical setting.

BACKGROUND: ArtiSential, a class of innovative laparoscopic instrument, has been developed to overcome the limitations of conventional laparoscopic surgery by enabling free, 360°-unrestricted movement of the wrist joint, as in robotic surgery. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to describe the initial experiences with these devices in myomectomy and to report the surgical outcomes. METHODS: A total of 77 women undergoing laparoscopic or robotic myomectomy between January 2021 and June 2022 were included in this multicenter prospective study. The ArtiSential instruments used by the surgeons were those chosen according to their respective preferences. The baseline characteristics, surgical outcomes, trocar placement options, and operator survey results were scrutinized. RESULTS: The mean age of the patients was 39.9 ± 6.3, and the mean body mass index (BMI, calculated as weight in kilograms divided by the square of height in meters) was 22.4 ± 3.4 kg/m2; 46.8% of the patients underwent robotic surgery, while 53.2% underwent laparoscopic surgery. The number of removed myomas was 3.3 ± 3.0, the size of the largest myoma was 7.1 ± 2.3 cm, and the operative time was 130.0 ± 54.0 min. No transfusions or laparotomy conversions were required. Other than one case of ileus, there were no postoperative complications. In most cases, the instruments were inserted through the umbilicus trocar, and the fenestrated forceps, needle holder, and bipolar fenestrated forceps, in that order, were frequently employed. According to a surgeon survey, 29.9% moderately or strongly agreed that the ArtiSential devices utilized were more convenient than conventional laparoscopic instruments, while only 9.7% moderately or strongly agreed that they were more convenient than robotic instruments. CONCLUSIONS: Myomectomy as performed with an ArtiSential instrument seems to be feasible and safe. Further studies are necessary in order to comparatively assess the outcomes and potential benefits of ArtiSential, robotic, and conventional laparoscopic myomectomy.

Objective: In sham acupuncture-controlled acupuncture clinical trials, although sham acupuncture techniques are different from those of verum acupuncture, the same acupuncture points are often used for verum and sham acupuncture, raising the question of whether sham acupuncture is an appropriate placebo. We aimed to examine the effects of sham and verum acupuncture according to the points needled (same or different between verum and sham acupuncture) in knee osteoarthritis. Methods: Ten databases were searched to find randomized controlled clinical trials (RCTs) assessing the effects of verum acupuncture with sham acupuncture or waiting lists on knee osteoarthritis. Sham acupuncture was classified as using the same acupuncture points as those in verum acupuncture (SATV) or using sham points (SATS). A frequentist network meta-analysis (NMA) was conducted, and the certainty of evidence was evaluated. Results: A total of 10 RCTs involving 1628 participants were included. Verum acupuncture was significantly superior to SATS but not different from SATV in terms of pain reduction. Additionally, SATV was significantly superior to the waiting list. For physical function, no difference were found between verum acupuncture, SATV, and SATS. The certainty of evidence was low to moderate. Conclusion: For knee osteoarthritis, the pain reduction effect of acupuncture may differ according to the needling points of sham acupuncture, and the control group should be established according to the specific aim of the study design and treatment mechanism.
