RESUMEN

Hydrometallurgy recycling of heavy metals from electroplating sludge is of hot spot in recent decades. Such recycling was tedious in the separation of impure Fe/Al prior to heavy metals from acid leachate after sludge dissolution. Herein, a facile hydrothermal route was developed to separate Fe/Al from Cu-bearing leachate. The results showed that when the leachate was directly hydrothermally treated at 160 °C in the presence of nitrate and ethanol, Al/Cu were stable in the leachate, but nearly 100% Fe was removed as hematite nanoparticles. With the addition of chloridion, the removal efficiencies of Fe/Al/Cu did not change apparently, but the corresponding precipitate was akageneite, not hematite. By replacing chloridion with sulfate, nearly 100% Fe and 98.6% Al were separated as natrojarosite/natroalunite block, while the Cu loss was only 1.7%. However, with the supplementary of phosphate, the Fe/Al removal achieved nearly 100%, but the Cu removal also achieved by 92.6%. The thermodynamic analysis showed that Cu was precipitated rapidly via the phosphate/Cu oxyhydroxide route by adding phosphate but removed slightly via the coordination route on the Fe/Al precipitates with the addition of nitrate, chloridion, and sulfate. In summary, Fe was effectively separated as hematite, akageneite, natrojarosite, and phosphate halite, in the presence of nitrate, chloridion, sulfate, and phosphate, separately. But the removal of Al as natroalunite and AlPO4 only started by adding sulfate and phosphate, respectively. Such results enabled a short hydrometallurgy process to effectively recycle heavy metals from electroplating sludge.

OBJECTIVES: We explored the epidemiological and molecular characteristics of Candida parapsilosis sensu stricto isolates in China, and their mechanisms of azole resistance. METHODS: Azole susceptibilities of 2318 non-duplicate isolates were determined using CLSI broth microdilution. Isolates were genotyped by a microsatellite typing method. Molecular resistance mechanisms were also studied and functionally validated by CRISPR/Cas9-based genetic alterations. RESULTS: Fluconazole resistance occurred in 2.4% (n = 56) of isolates, and these isolates showed a higher frequency of distribution in ICU inpatients compared with susceptible isolates (48.2%, n = 27/56 versus 27.8%, 613/2208; P = 0.019). Microsatellite-genotyping analysis yielded 29 genotypes among 56 fluconazole-resistant isolates, of which 10 genotypes, including 37 isolates, belonged to clusters, persisting and transmitting in Chinese hospitals for 1-29 months. Clusters harbouring Erg11Y132F (5/10; 50%) were predominant in China. Among these, the second most dominant cluster MT07, including seven isolates, characteristically harbouring Erg11Y132F and Mrr1Q625K, lent its carriage to being one of the strongest associations with cross-resistance and high MICs of fluconazole (>256 mg/L) and voriconazole (2-8 mg/L), causing transmission across two hospitals. Among mutations tested, Mrr1Q625K led to the highest-level increase of fluconazole MIC (32-fold), while mutations located within or near the predicted transcription factor domain of Tac1 (D440Y, T492M and L518F) conferred cross-resistance to azoles. CONCLUSIONS: This study is the first Chinese report of persistence and transmissions of multiple fluconazole-resistant C. parapsilosis sensu stricto clones harbouring Erg11Y132F, and the first demonstration of the mutations Erg11G307A, Mrr1Q625K, Tac1L263S, Tac1D440Y and Tac1T492M as conferring resistance to azoles.

In some industrial applications, it is required to do off-line multiobjective optimization in embedded systems. Due to their limited computing and memory capability, embedded processor may not be able to run conventional multiobjective optimization evolutionary algorithms (MOEAs). This article proposes a micro MOEA with piecewise strategy (µ MOEA) for industrial optimization in embedded processor. µ MOEA introduces an improved piecewise strategy based on the MOEA/D framework, which serially optimizes subclusters to be compatible with embedded processor under limited computing power. For the purpose of further enhancing µ MOEA, a dynamic and flexible weight vector update trigger mechanism is proposed, so that the algorithm can save and utilize the computing resources of the embedded processor as much as possible. Abundant artificial test problems are carrying out to test the performance of µ MOEA. Through various experiments, it can be found that µ MOEA has outstanding performance in ZDT, DTLZ, SMOP, and MaF problems. Last and most importantly, µ MOEA is successfully applied to two specific application scenarios of industrial optimization on embedded processor for simulation, such as two different types of semi-autogenous grinding optimization problems and micro-grid energy optimization problem, which prove the feasibility of applying MOEA to embedded processor.

Fatty liver is a major metabolic disorder of high-producing dairy cows during the transition period. In nonruminants, it is well established that insulin-induced gene 1 (INSIG1) plays a crucial role in regulating hepatic lipogenesis by controlling the anchoring of sterol regulatory element-binding protein 1 (SREBP-1) on the endoplasmic reticulum along with SREBP cleavage-activating protein (SCAP). Whether the INSIG1-SCAP-SREBP-1c transport axis is affected in cows experiencing fatty liver is unknown. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the potential role of INSIG1-SCAP-SREBP-1c axis in the progression of fatty liver in dairy cows. For in vivo experiments, 24 dairy cows at the start of their fourth lactation (median; range 3-5) and 8 d in milk (median; range 4-12 d) were selected into a healthy group [n = 12; triglyceride (TG) content <1%] and a severe fatty liver group (n = 12; TG content >10%) according to their hepatic TG content. Blood samples were collected for detecting serum concentrations of free fatty acids, ß-hydroxybutyrate, and glucose. Compared with healthy cows, cows with severe fatty liver had higher serum concentrations of ß-hydroxybutyrate and free fatty acids and lower concentration of glucose. Liver biopsies were used to detect the status of INSIG1-SCAP-SREBP-1c axis, and the mRNA expression of SREBP-1c-target lipogenic genes acetyl-CoA carboxylase α (ACACA), fatty acid synthase (FASN), and diacylglycerol acyltransferase 1 (DGAT1). Cows with severe fatty liver had lower protein expression of INSIG1 in the hepatocyte endoplasmic reticulum fraction, greater protein expression of SCAP and precursor SREBP-1c in the hepatocyte Golgi fraction, and greater protein expression of mature SREBP-1c in the hepatocyte nuclear fraction. In addition, the mRNA expression of SREBP-1c-target lipogenic genes ACACA, FASN, and DGAT1 was greater in the liver of dairy cows with severe fatty liver. In vitro experiments were conducted on hepatocytes isolated from 5 healthy 1-d-old female Holstein calves, and hepatocytes from each calf were run independently. First, hepatocytes were treated with 0, 200, or 400 µM palmitic acid (PA) for 12 h. Exogenous PA treatment decreased INSIG1 protein abundance, enhanced the endoplasmic reticulum to Golgi export of SCAP-precursor SREBP-1c complex and the nuclear translocation of mature SREBP-1c, all of which was associated with increased transcriptional activation of lipogenic genes and TG synthesis. Second, hepatocytes were transfected with INSIG1-overexpressing adenovirus for 48 h and treated with 400 µM PA 12 h before the end of transfection. Overexpressing INSIG1 inhibited PA-induced SREBP-1c processing, upregulation of lipogenic genes, and TG synthesis in hepatocytes. Overall, the present in vivo and in vitro results indicated that the low abundance of INSIG1 contributed to SREBP-1c processing and hepatic steatosis in dairy cows. Thus, the INSIG1-SCAP-SREBP-1c axis may be a novel target for treatment of fatty liver in dairy cows.

Objective: To investigate whether an incubation time of 5 days (Aerobic/F, Anaerobic/F) and 14 days (Myco/F) blood culture bottles is sufficient to prevent false-negative results. Methods: We evaluated 1,244 blood bottles (344 patients) defined as negative by the BACTEC™ FX system. We also reviewed published cases and our own cases of bloodstream infection caused by Cryptococcus neoformans and simulated different scenarios, including different inoculation concentrations, bottle types, and clinical isolates. Results: Two bottles (0.16%) were found to contain C. neoformans when subcultured and Gram stained. A 5-day protocol with Aerobic/F bottles was insufficient for the growth of C. neoformans in some cases, and C. neoformans grew better in Myco/F bottles than in Aerobic/F bottles. Conclusion: Subculturing and Gram staining after a 5-day protocol were important for the detection of C. neoformans, and Myco/F bottles should be collected for the blood culture of C. neoformans.

Zucchini (Cucurbita pepo L.) is one of the main vegetable crops grown under protected cultivation in northern China. Low-temperature (LT) stress severely inhibits the growth of zucchini seedlings, resulting in reductions in yield and quality. Here, using three kinds of different humic acids, including coal-based humic acid (CHA), fulvic acid (FA), and biochemical humic acid (BHA), we investigated the effects of humic acids against LT stress (5 °C) in zucchini seedlings. Treatment with all three kinds of humic acids improves LT stress tolerance by decreasing oxidative damage through increases in antioxidative enzyme activities and the contents of soluble sugar and proline in zucchini seedlings, especially after BHA application. Comparative transcriptomic analysis revealed that a total of 17 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were commonly induced in the leaves of FA-, CHA-, and BHA-treated zucchini seedlings under LT stress, including calmodulin, ethylene-responsive transcription factors (TFs), peroxidases, and 10 TFs, including two NAC and seven WRKY genes. Altogether, these results indicated that supplementation with humic acids reprograms plant metabolism and modulates the expression of genes involved in ROS scavenging, phytohormone metabolism, or signaling pathways, finally improving LT stress tolerance in zucchini seedlings.

Candida albicans remains the most common species causing invasive candidiasis. In this study, we present the population structure of 551 global C. albicans strains. Of these, the antifungal susceptibilities of 370 strains were tested. Specifically, 66.6% of the azole-nonsusceptible (NS)/non-wild-type (NWT) strains that were tested belonged to Clade 1. A phylogenetic analysis, a principal components analysis, the population structure, and a loss of heterozygosity events revealed two nested subclades in Clade 1, namely, Clade 1-R and Clade 1-R-α, that exhibited higher azole-NS/NWT rates (75.0% and 100%, respectively). In contrast, 6.4% (21/326) of the non-Clade 1-R isolates were NS/NWT to at least 1 of 4 azoles. Notably, all of the Clade 1-R-α isolates were pan-azole-NS/NWT that carried unique A114S and Y257H double substitutions in Erg11p and had the overexpression of ABC-type efflux pumps introduced by the substitution A736V in transcript factor Tac1p. It is worth noting that the Clade 1-R and Clade 1-R-α isolates were from different cities that are distributed over a large geographic span. Our study demonstrated the presence of specific phylogenetic subclades that are associated with antifungal resistance among C. albicans Clade 1, which calls for public attention on the monitoring of the future spread of these clones. IMPORTANCE Invasive candidiasis is the most common human fungal disease among hospitalized patients, and Candida albicans is the predominant pathogen. Considering the large number of infected cases and the limited alternative therapies, the azole-resistance of C. albicans brings a huge clinical threat. Here, our study suggested that antifungal resistance in C. albicans could also be associated with phylogenetic lineages. Specifically, it was revealed that more than half of the azole-resistant C. albicans strains belonged to the same clade. Furthermore, two nested subclades of the clade exhibited extremely high azole-resistance. It is worth noting that the isolates of two subclades were from different cities that are distributed over a large geographic span in China. This indicates that the azole-resistant C. albicans subclades may develop into serious public health concerns.

Pilot scale production of one-dimensional (FeS2)nn- rods was performed by using an automatic 20 L vessel at 80 °C under atmosphere condition with the resource utilization of Fe-rich sludge. The sludge was simulated at lab-scale with chemical pure of ferric trichloride. After the sludge treatment, the corresponding rods were not formed at room temperature. But by heating at 80 °C, erdite rod was well-crystallized after 0.5 h by only adding Na halite, and KFeS2 rod was crystallized weakly after 2 h and highly at 10 h with the addition of K halite. After 48 h heating, the rods grow radially to 300 nm for erdite, but to 5 µm for KFeS2. However, at room temperature, erdite rod was converted to high crystallized KFeS2 in KOH water or ethanol solution, whilst the conversion of KFeS2 rod to erdite also occurred in NaOH water solution, but terminated in NaOH ethanol solution, without any morphology change. It is also noted that with the presence of both Na and K halite, the rod was an intermediate of erdite to KFeS2 with 1 µm length after heating at 100 °C but converted to 10-µm-length KFeS2 crystal at the temperature of > 120 °C. The thermodynamic results confirmed that during the rod polymerization, the Fe(OH)3HS- formation was the sole rate-limiting step and showed a positive Gibbs value of 6.45 kJ/mol at room temperature and negative values at the temperature of > 48 °C. In summary, this method not only enabled the vaporization of waste Fe-rich sludge as value-added rods without generating any secondary waste but also showed a new route for the in situ conversion of erdite/KFeS2 rods at room temperature.

BACKGROUND: Escherichia coli sequence type (ST)131 is an important urinary tract pathogen, and is responsible for considerable healthcare-associated problems and costs worldwide. A better understanding of the factors that contribute to its rapid worldwide spread may help in arresting its continual spread. We studied a large collection of fecal and urinary E. coli ST131 and E. coli non-ST131 phylogenetic group B2 isolates, from women, men and children, in regional NSW, Australia. RESULTS: We found out that there was a step up in ST131 prevalence (and possibly in virulence) from fecal to clinical (urinary) isolates in general, and specifically among ciprofloxacin resistant isolates, in the 3 host groups. Furthermore, our results revealed that the inferred virulence potential of the ST131 isolates (as measured by VF gene scores) was much higher than that of non-ST131 phylogenetic group B2 isolates, and this was much more pronounced amongst the urinary isolates. This finding suggests presence of possible E. coli phylogenetic B2 subgroups with varying levels of virulence, with ST131 being much more virulent compared to others. A strong association between ST131 and fluoroquinolone (FQ) resistance was also demonstrated, suggesting that FQ use is related to ST131 emergence and spread. Specifically, about 77% of ST131 isolates from women and men, and 47% from children, were extended spectrum ß- lactamase (ESBL) producers. Moreover, FQ resistant ST131 ESBL isolates on average harbored more VF genes than all other isolates. CONCLUSIONS: The strong association between ST131 prevalence and FQ resistance amongst the studied isolates suggests that FQ use is related to ST131 emergence and spread. Furthermore, our results demonstrate that FQ resistance and a plurality of VF genes can exist together in ST131, something that has traditionally been regarded as being inversely related. This may partly contribute to the emergence and worldwide spread of ST131.

BACKGROUND: Extraintestinal Escherichia coli (E. coli) causing urinary tract infections (UTIs), and often referred to as uropathogenic E. coli (UPEC), are a major contributor to the morbidity of UTIs and associated healthcare costs. UPEC possess several virulence factors (VFs) for infecting and injuring the host. We studied the papG allele distribution, and its association with other VF genes and phylogenetic groups, amongst 836 UPEC and fecal isolates from reproductive age women. RESULTS: The papGII gene was highly prevalent amongst pyelonephritis isolates (68%), whilst the majority, albeit smaller proportion, of cystitis isolates (31%) harboured the papGIII gene. Among the pyelonephritis and cystitis isolates, papG positive isolates on average had higher VF gene scores, and were more likely to belong to phylogenetic group B2, than their negative counterparts. This was mostly due to the contribution of papGII isolates, which on average contained more VF genes than their papGIII counterparts, irrespective of the uro-clinical syndrome. However, the papGII isolates from the pyelonephritis cohort had higher VF gene scores than the cystitis ones, suggesting presence of possible papGII clones with differing inferred virulence potential. Furthermore, papGII isolates were more likely to possess an intact pap gene operon than their papGIII counterparts. Also of note was the high proportion of isolates with the papGI allele which was not associated with other pap operon genes; and this finding has not been described before. CONCLUSIONS: The association of the papGII gene with several VF genes compared to the papGIII gene, appears to explain the abundance of these genes in pyelonephritis and cystitis isolates, respectively.

The flue gas desulfurization wastewater is highly saline and has too many refractory pollutants to be recycled during the desulfurization process of the coal-fired heating plant. Given that waste heat is abundant in coal-fired heating plants, a thermal treatment method was developed to simultaneously remove sulfates and nitrates from the wastewater, with the production of chemical-grade natroalunite and recycled water. The results showed that sulfates and nitrates were 50.3 and 10 g/L in the wastewater, respectively, and only 2.8% and 9.1% were removed after direct treatment at 270°C for 7 h; but these rates increased to 99.3% and 99.9%, respectively, with the addition of commercial poly aluminum chloride. Mass balance summarized that the treatment of 1 ton wastewater needed 0.1 ton PAC and produced 0.11 ton natroalunite and 0.92 ton recycle water. The removal of sulfates and nitrates was mainly done by the precipitation reaction of sulfates such as natroalunite and the redox reaction between nitrates and organics, respectively. Thermodynamic analysis demonstrated that the precipitate reaction occurred at 45°C and accelerated in the temperature range of 45-270°C, but became slow with the decrease of sulfate and Al concentrations in wastewater. Four other reagents were also used for wastewater treatment in comparison with PAC and showed the following order of performance: PAC > citrate calcium > limestone > subacetate aluminum > citrate ferric. This method provided a practical route to treat wastewater from flue gas desulfurization without generating secondary waste.

Background: Strongyloides stercoralis, the causative agent of strongyloidiasis, is a parasitic worm that has larvae capable of reinfecting the same host. This nematode infection is therefore difficult to treat and to achieve total cure. Information about genetic variation and differences in drug susceptibility between strains is needed to improve treatment outcomes. Aim: To develop a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to identify the intra-species variation among 13 S. stercoralis isolates collected from Bangladesh, USA and Australia. Material & Methods: PCR assays were designed by using primers targeting S. stercoralis internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions 1 and 2. Sequence data generated by these PCR products were compared to the existing ITS1/2, 18S and 28S rRNA gene sequences in GenBank for phylogenetic analysis. Results: Intra-species single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were identified in ITS1 and in the 5.8S rRNA gene. The generated phylogram grouped the 13 isolates into dog, Orangutan and human clusters. Conclusion: This method could be used as an epidemiological tool to study strain differences in larger collections of S. stercoralis isolates. The study forms the basis for further development of an ITS-based assay for S. stercoralis molecular epidemiological studies.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to explore the molecular mechanisms of tibolone treatment in postmenopausal women. METHODS: The gene set enrichment profile, GSE12446, which includes 9 human endometrial samples from postmenopausal women treated with tibolone (tibolone group) and 9 control samples (control group), was downloaded from GEO database for analysis. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in tibolone vs. control groups were identified and then used for function and pathway enrichment analysis. Protein-protein interaction (PPI) network and module analyses were also performed. Finally, drug-target interaction was predicted for genes in modules, and then were validated in Pubmed. RESULTS: A total of 238 up-regulated DEGs and 72 down-regulated DEGs were identified. These DEGs were mainly enriched in various biological processed and pathways, such as cilium movement (e.g., CCDC114 and DNAI2), calcium ion homeostasis, regulation of hormone levels and complement/coagulation cascades. PPI network contained 368 interactions and 166 genes, of which IGF1, DNALI1, CCDC114, TOP2A, DNAH5 and DNAI2 were the hue genes. A total of 96 drug-gene interactions were obtained, including 94 drugs and eight genes. TOP2A and HTR2B were found to be targets of 28 drugs and 38 drugs, respectively. Among the 94 obtained drugs, only 12 drugs were reported in studies, of which 7 drugs (e.g., epirubicin) were found to target TOP2A. CONCLUSIONS: CCDC114 and DNAI2 might play important roles in tibolone-treated postmenopausal women via cilium movement function. TOP2A might be a crucial target of tibolone in endometrium of postmenopausal women.

ASS1 genetic deficiency in patients leads to an autosomal recessive urea cycle disorder citrullinemia, while its somatic silence or down-regulation is very common in various human cancers. Here, we show that ASS1 functions as a tumor suppressor in breast cancer, and the pesticide spinosyn A (SPA) and its derivative LM-2I suppress breast tumor cell proliferation and growth by binding to and activating ASS1. The C13-C14 double bond in SPA and LM-2I while the Cys97 (C97) site in ASS1 are critical for the interaction between ASS1 and SPA or LM-2I. SPA and LM-2I treatment results in significant enhancement of ASS1 enzymatic activity in breast cancer cells, particularly in those cancer cells with low ASS1 expression, leading to reduced pyrimidine synthesis and consequently the inhibition of cancer cell proliferation. Thus, our results establish spinosyn A and its derivative LM-2I as potent ASS1 enzymatic activator and tumor inhibitor, which provides a therapeutic avenue for tumors with low ASS1 expression and for those non-tumor diseases caused by down-regulation of ASS1.

Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) has been accepted as a rapid, accurate, and less labor-intensive method in the identification of microorganisms in clinical laboratories. However, there is limited data on systematic evaluation of its effectiveness in the identification of phylogenetically closely-related yeast species. In this study, we evaluated two commercially available MALDI-TOF systems, Autof MS 1000 and Vitek MS, for the identification of yeasts within closely-related species complexes. A total of 1,228 yeast isolates, representing 14 different species of five species complexes, including 479 of Candida parapsilosis complex, 323 of Candida albicans complex, 95 of Candida glabrata complex, 16 of Candida haemulonii complex (including two Candida auris), and 315 of Cryptococcus neoformans complex, collected under the National China Hospital Invasive Fungal Surveillance Net (CHIF-NET) program, were studied. Autof MS 1000 and Vitek MS systems correctly identified 99.2% and 89.2% of the isolates, with major error rate of 0.4% versus 1.6%, and minor error rate of 0.1% versus 3.5%, respectively. The proportion of isolates accurately identified by Autof MS 1000 and Vitek MS per each yeast complex, respectively, was as follows; C. albicans complex, 99.4% vs 96.3%; C. parapsilosis complex, 99.0% vs 79.1%; C glabrata complex, 98.9% vs 94.7%; C. haemulonii complex, 100% vs 93.8%; and C. neoformans, 99.4% vs 95.2%. Overall, Autof MS 1000 exhibited good capacity in yeast identification while Vitek MS had lower identification accuracy, especially in the identification of less common species within phylogenetically closely-related species complexes.

To explore the role of dryocrassin ABBA (ABBA) in the prevention and treatment of Streptococcus pneumoniae (S. pneumoniae) infections in vitro, a minimal inhibitory concentration test, growth curve assay, hemolysis assay, BacLight LIVE/DEAD staining experiments, oligomerization inhibition assay, time-killing test, LDH release detection assay and cytotoxicity test were performed to evaluate the efficacy of ABBA against S. pneumoniae infections in vitro. The results indicated that ABBA treatment exists bactericidal effect on S. pneumoniae at a concentration of less than 8 µg/ml. Furthermore, ABBA was effective at inhibiting the oligomerization of pneumolysin (PLY) from reducing its hemolytic activity. Meanwhile, ABBA could ameliorate cell injury by neutralizing the biological activity of PLY without cytotoxicity. In summary, ABBA was a leading compound against S. pneumoniae infections through bactericidal effect and neutralizing PLY activity.

BACKGROUND: Omadacycline (ZL-2401) is a semi-synthetic derivative of minocycline. It has a broadspectrum activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, and atypical pathogens. The objective of this study was to evaluate the antibacterial activity of omadacycline against recently collected bacterial isolates from Chinese patients. RESULTS: Omadacycline showed potent activity against all Gram-positive pathogens: S. aureus MICs were low regardless of susceptibility to methicillin (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, MRSA: N = 97, MIC50/90 0.12/0.25 mg/L, 98.5% susceptible; methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus, MSSA: N = 100, MIC50/90 0.12/0.12 mg/L, 100.0% susceptible). Omadacycline was also very effective against ß-haemolytic streptococci (MIC50/90, 0.06/0.12 mg/L), viridans group streptococci (MIC50/90,<0.03/0. 06 mg/L), and enterococci (MIC50/90, 0.03/0.12 mg/L). Against S. pneumoniae, omadacycline was highly active regardless of penicillin-resistance (MIC90 0.06 mg/L) and despite the fact that less than 10.0% of these strains were susceptible to tetracycline. Omadacycline exhibited good in vitro activity against Enterobacterales isolates (MIC50/90, 2/8 mg/L), inhibiting 81.7% of the isolates at ≤4 mg/L. M. catarrhalis isolates (MIC50/90, 0.12/0.25 mg/L) were fully susceptible to omadacycline at ≤0.5 mg/L. CONCLUSIONS: Omadacycline showed potent in vitro activity against most common bacterial pathogens, and even against highly resistant problem pathogens, such as MRSA, penicillin-R and tetracycline-R S. pneumoniae and enterococci. The susceptibility rate of Chinese isolates was similar to those reported in other countries, but the decreased activity against K. pneumoniae isolates in the present study should be noted.

The catalyst in the oxygen electrode is the core component of the aqueous metal-air battery, which plays a vital role in the determination of the open circuit potential, energy density, and cycle life of the battery. For rechargeable aqueous metal-air batteries, the catalyst should have both good oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalytic performance. Compared with precious metal catalysts, non-precious metal materials have more advantages in terms of abundant resource reserves and low prices. Over the past few years, great efforts have been made in the development of non-precious metal bifunctional catalysts. This review selectively evaluates the advantages, disadvantages and development status of recent advanced materials including pure carbon materials, carbon-based metal materials and carbon-free materials as bifunctional oxygen catalysts. Preliminary improvement strategies are formulated to make up for the deficiency of each material. The development prospects and challenges facing bifunctional catalysts in the future are also discussed.

Invasive aspergillosis (IA) due to Aspergillus lentulus is associated with high mortality. In this study, we investigated the clinical and microbiological characteristics of 6 fatal cases of proven or probable IA caused by A. lentulus in China. Underlying immunosuppression, prior antifungal exposure, and intensive care unit (ICU) hospitalization were important risk factors for invasive A. lentulus infection. Phenotypic differences were observed for A. lentulus isolates including slower growth, reduced sporulation, and inability to grow at 48°C, compared with Aspergillus fumigatus complex. ITS sequencing was unable to distinguish A. lentulus from A. fumigatus, but sequencing of the benA, CaM, and rod A loci enabled reliable distinction of these closely related species. Phylogenetic analysis further confirmed that the ITS region had little variation within the Aspergillus section Fumigati while the benA gene offered the highest intraspecific discrimination. Microsatellite typing results revealed that only loci on chromosomes 1, 3, 5, and 6b generated detectable amplicons for identification. All A. lentulus isolates showed in vitro resistance to multiple antifungal drugs including amphotericin B (MIC range 4 to 8 µg/ml), itraconazole (MIC 2 µg/ml), voriconazole (MIC of 4-16 µg/ml), and posaconazole (MIC of 0.5-1 µg/ml). However, MECs for the echinocandin drugs ranged from 0.03-0.25, ≤0.008-0.015, and ≤0.015-0.03 µg/ml for caspofungin, micafungin, and anidulafungin, respectively. A. lentulus is an emerging fungal pathogen in China, causing fatal disease, and clinicians as well as laboratories should be alert to their increasing presence.

Candida parapsilosis is an important species causing invasive candidiasis (IC) in China. The present survey was a national multicenter study of the molecular epidemiology and antifungal susceptibility profiles of C. parapsilosis. Non-duplicate C. parapsilosis isolates were collected from 10 hospitals across China in the CHIF-NET program 2016-2017. Isolates were genotyped using four highly polymorphic microsatellite markers, and susceptibility profiles determined using Sensititre YeastOneTM YO10. A total of 319 C. parapsilosis from separate patients with IC were studied; 49.2, 17.9, and 10.3% isolates were from patients in surgical departments, general intensive care units (ICUs) and neonatal ICUs (NICU), respectively. C. parapsilosis showed good susceptibility to nine antifungal drugs. Microsatellite analysis identified 122 microsatellite (MT) types. Most MT types had sporadic distribution. However, we identified 32 clusters across 10 hospitals; seven clusters were caused by seven endemic genotypes involving five or more isolates in hospitals designated as H01, H02, H06, and H10. These clusters mainly affected surgical departments and ICUs, except for genotype MT42 which was seen in 22 patients from NICU (hospital H06). Of 16 fluconazole-resistant isolates, seven from hospital H02 shared the same genotype MT70, and three from hospital H04 were of genotype MT47. For 37 isolates with non-wild type MICs to 5-flucytosine, 29 were from hospital H01 (genotype MT48). Here we present the first nationwide molecular epidemiology study of C. parapsilosis in China, identified several previously unrecognized clusters, which included antifungal drug resistant isolates. These findings provide important data for control of IC in China.
