Introduction: Cisplatin is one of the most effective chemotherapeutic drugs used in oral cancer treatment, but systemic administration has side effects. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of iontophoresis on the enhancement of cisplatin release from cisplatin-encapsulated chitosan nanoparticles. Methods: The effect of different mass ratios of chitosan to tripolyphosphate (TPP) (5:1, 10:1, 15:1, 20:1) on the encapsulation efficiency of cisplatin was investigated. Uptake of cisplatin-encapsulated chitosan by cells was observed using a confocal laser scanning microscope. The cell viability at different cisplatin concentrations was examined using a 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay. Three iontophoresis methods, namely constant-current chronopotentiometry (CCCP), cyclic chronopotentiometry (CCP), and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), were used to enhance cisplatin release from cisplatin-encapsulated chitosan nanoparticles. In addition, mouse oral squamous cell carcinoma cell lines were implanted into the mouse oral mucosa to induce oral cancer. The effects of enhanced cisplatin release by CCCP, CCP, and DPV on tumor suppression in mice were evaluated. Tumors and lymph nodes were isolated for hematoxylin-eosin staining and immunohistochemistry staining including Ki-67 and pan CK after sacrifice. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry was conducted to quantify the platinum content within the tumors. Results: The results showed that nanoparticles with a mass ratio of 15:1 exhibited the highest cisplatin encapsulation efficiency (approximately 15.6%) and longest continued release (up to 35 days) in phosphate buffered saline with a release rate of 100%. Cellular uptake results suggested that chitosan nanoparticles were delivered to the cytoplasm via endocytosis. The results of the MTT assay revealed that the survival rate of cells decreased as the cisplatin concentration increased. The CCP (1 mA, on:off = 1 s: 1 s) and DPV (0-0.06 V) groups were the most effective in inhibiting tumor growth, and both groups exhibited the lowest percentage of Ki-67 positive and pan CK positive. Conclusion: This study is the first to investigate and determine the efficacy of DPV in enhancing in vivo drug release from nanoparticles for the treatment of cancer in animals. The results suggest that the CCP and DPV methods have the potential to be combined with surgery for oral cancer treatment.

Access to clean water is fundamental to public health and safety, serving as the cornerstone of well-being in communities. Despite the significant investments of millions of dollars in water testing and treatment processes, the United States continues to grapple with over 7 million waterborne-related cases annually. This persistent challenge underscores the pressing need for the development of a new, efficient, rapid, low-cost, and reliable method for ensuring water quality. The urgency of this endeavor cannot be overstated, as it holds the potential to safeguard countless lives and mitigate the pervasive risks associated with contaminated water sources. In this study, we introduce a biochip LAMP assay tailored for water source monitoring. Our method swiftly detects even extremely low concentrations of Escherichia coli (E. coli) in water, and 10 copies/µL of E. coli aqueous solution could yield positive results within 15 min on a PC-MEDA biochip. This innovation marks a significant departure from the current reliance on lab-dependent methods, which typically necessitate several days for bacterial culture and colony counting. Our multifunctional biochip system not only enables the real-time LAMP testing of crude E. coli samples but also holds promise for future modifications to facilitate on-site usage, thereby revolutionizing water quality assessment and ensuring rapid responses to potential contamination events.

BACKGROUND: Appropriate communication with dental patients enhances treatment outcomes and patient satisfaction. Implementing simulated patient interviews courses can improve patient-centered care and reduce conflict during clerkship training. Therefore, this study explored the relationship among student participation in a situational simulation course (SSC), academic performance, clerkship performance, and objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) performance. METHODS: This study was conducted with a sample of fifth-year dental students undergoing clerkship training. After implementing a situational simulation course to investigate the relationship among participation in SSC, academic performance, clerkship performance, and OSCE performance, a path analysis model was developed and tested. RESULTS: Eighty-seven fifth-year dental students were eligible for the SSC, and most (n = 70, 80.46%) volunteered to participate. The path analysis model revealed that academic performance had a direct effect on OSCE performance (ß = 0.281, P = 0.003) and clerkship performance (ß = 0.441, P < 0.001). In addition, SSC teaching had a direct effect on OSCE performance (ß = 0.356, P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: SSCs can enhance dental students' non-operational clinical competency and OSCE performance effectively. Simulated patient encounters with feedback, incorporated into the dental curricula, have led to improved communication. Based on our findings, we suggest implementing SSC teaching before the OSCE to improve communication and cognitive skills.

BACKGROUND: A phase-III interdisciplinary quality improvement program, the preanesthetic oral examination (PAOE), was implemented as a new program in an academic medical center to prevent perioperative dental injuries. This study was aimed at surveying the perceived service quality and satisfaction of patients who had undergone PAOE based on the SERVQUAL model. METHODS: This cross-sectional survey was conducted at the Kaohsiung Medical University Hospital using convenience sampling. Patients referred for PAOE (PAOE group) and those who had voluntarily availed dental services (control group) were recruited. A modified SERVQUAL questionnaire was used to assess the perceived service quality and patient satisfaction with dental services. Cronbach's alpha for SERVQUAL was 0.861. RESULTS: We enrolled 286 (68.8%) and 130 (31.2%) participants in the PAOE and control groups, respectively. The path analysis revealed that the PAOE group scored lower in dimensions of reliability (ß = -0.074, P = 0.003), responsiveness (ß = -0.148, P = 0.006), and empathy (ß = -0.140, P = 0.011). Furthermore, reliability (ß = 0.655, P < 0.001) and responsiveness (ß = 0.147, P = 0.008) showed a direct effect on patient satisfaction. Overall, participants were highly satisfied with the dental services. CONCLUSIONS: The PAOE group showed lower satisfaction and perceived quality of dental services compared to the control group. Although implementing an interdisciplinary program reduces the perceived service quality, its influence is limited. Employing an interdisciplinary teamwork is a win-win strategy encouraged to improve patient safety and reduce malpractice claims. Future suggestions should focus on establishing waiting times that are considered reasonable by patients. Patient-centered education related to the risk of perioperative dental injuries should be provided, and awareness of oral conditions for patient safety should be improved. Moreover, interprofessional education in continuous and undergraduate programs is necessary to improve professional quality.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to enhance the bond strength between Biodentine™ (BD), a bioactive tricalcium silicate (C3S) based material, and resin composite through various surface treatments. METHODOLOGY: BD samples were immersed in either double distilled water or Hank's Balanced Salt Solution and analyzed using X-ray Diffraction (XRD). Shear bond strength (SBS) evaluations of BD were performed using Prime & Bond™ NT (PNT), Single Bond Universal (SBU), Xeno V (Xeno), and glass ionomer cement (GIC) following various etching durations (0 s/ 15 s/ 30 s/ 60 s with 37.5% phosphoric acid). Two primers, RelyX™ Ceramic Primer (RCP) and Monobond ™ Plus (MBP), were chosen to prime BD for SBS enhancement. Fractography and bonding interfaces were examined with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS)/ scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). RESULTS: XRD confirmed BD's main compositions as C3S, Ca(OH)2, CaCO3 and ZrO2 after 14 days crystal maturation. Etched BD did not improve SBS. GIC exhibited the lowest SBS (p < 0.05) among all adhesives, regardless of the etching mode (all < 1 MPa). The highest SBS (17.5 ± 3.6 MPa, p < 0.05) was achieved when BD primed with MBP followed by SBU application. FTIR and EDS showed γ-MPTS and10-MDP within the MBP primer interacted with C3S and ZrO2 of BD, achieving enhanced SBS. Most specimens exhibited mixed or cohesive failure modes. Significance BD's subpar mechanical properties and texture may contribute to its poor adhesion to resin composite. Pretreating BD with MBP primer, followed by SBU adhesive is recommended for improving bond strength.

BACKGROUND: The potential of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) in revolutionizing regenerative medicine cannot be overstated. iPSCs offer a profound opportunity for therapies involving cell replacement, disease modeling, and cell transplantation. However, the widespread application of iPSC cellular therapy faces hurdles, including the imperative to regulate iPSC differentiation rigorously and the inherent genetic disparities among individuals. To address these challenges, the concept of iPSC super donors emerges, holding exceptional genetic attributes and advantageous traits. These super donors serve as a wellspring of standardized, high-quality cell sources, mitigating inter-individual variations and augmenting the efficacy of therapy. METHODS: In pursuit of this goal, our study embarked on the establishment of iPSC cell lines specifically sourced from donors possessing the HLA type (A33:03-B58:01-DRB1*03:01). The reprogramming process was meticulously executed, resulting in the successful generation of iPSC lines from these carefully selected donors. Subsequently, an extensive characterization was conducted to comprehensively understand the features and attributes of these iPSC lines. RESULTS: The outcomes of our research were highly promising. The reprogramming efforts culminated in the generation of iPSC lines from donors with the specified HLA type. These iPSC lines displayed a range of distinctive characteristics that were thoroughly examined and documented. This successful generation of iPSC lines from super donors possessing advantageous genetic traits represents a significant stride towards the realization of their potential in therapeutic applications. CONCLUSION: In summary, our study marks a crucial milestone in the realm of regenerative medicine. The establishment of iPSC lines from super donors with specific HLA types signifies a paradigm shift in addressing challenges related to iPSC cellular therapy. The standardized and high-quality cell sources derived from these super donors hold immense potential for various therapeutic applications. As we move forward, these findings provide a solid foundation for further research and development, ultimately propelling the field of regenerative medicine toward new horizons of efficacy and accessibility.

Biochips, a novel technology in the field of biomolecular analysis, offer a promising alternative to conventional testing equipment. These chips integrate multiple functions within a single system, providing a compact and efficient solution for various testing needs. For biochips, a pattern-control micro-electrode-dot-array (MEDA) is a new, universally viable design that can replace microchannels and other micro-components. In a Micro Electrode Dot Array (MEDA), each electrode can be programmatically controlled or dynamically grouped, allowing a single chip to fulfill the diverse requirements of different tests. This capability not only enhances flexibility, but also contributes to cost reduction by eliminating the need for multiple specialized chips. In this paper, we present a visible biochip testing system for tracking the entire testing process in real time, and describe our application of the system to detect SARS-CoV-2.

PURPOSE: To compare the plaque-removal efficacy of ultra-soft single-headed, triple-headed, and T-shaped toothbrushes and the subjective perceptions of users. METHODS: In this randomized, single-blind, crossover study, 30 healthy adult participants were randomly divided into three groups of 10, who tested the three types of toothbrushes in differing order, with a 1-week washout period between the tests. Dental plaque scores were recorded before and after toothbrushing, and questionnaires on subjective perceptions after toothbrushing were collected. RESULTS: The participants included 16 female participants and 14 male participants (average age: 29.4 ± 6.7 years). All three toothbrush types were effective in reducing dental plaque by 36-46%; however, the cleaning effect of the ultra-soft single-headed toothbrush was inferior to that of the triple-headed and T-shaped toothbrushes, the difference being statistically significant. The users' subjective perceptions suggested that the ultra-soft single-headed toothbrush was significantly superior to the other two toothbrush types. Plaque scores for the lower posterior tooth surfaces were higher than those for the upper posterior tooth surfaces, particularly on the left side, for both the ultra-soft single-headed and T-shaped toothbrushes. CONCLUSION: Healthcare practitioners should identify the type of toothbrush bristles used by individuals and provide appropriate oral health information.

This article aimed to assess the efficacy of periodontal regenerative therapy (PRT) for treating periodontal intrabony defects in East Asians. The systematic review was performed according to the PRISMA guidelines. Literature searches on the PubMed and national medical journal databases, and representative clinical journals of the East Asians were performed on July 31, 2018. Randomized controlled trials, prospective case-control studies, retrospective analyses, and case series receiving regenerative procedures, including barrier membrane (BM) and enamel matrix derivative (EMD) applications with or without bone replacement graft (BRG), with follow-up periods of 6 and 12 months were evaluated. The outcome variables were probing depth (PD) reduction and clinical attachment level (CAL) gain. Twenty studies were included, of which eight were assessed for bias risk. Compared to open flap debridement, PD reduction and CAL gain were superior in all PRTs at both follow-up time points. BM or EMD alone showed equivalent outcomes at 6 months, and CAL gain appeared greater with BM alone at 12 months. BM with BRG showed inferior CAL gain relative to BM alone, but EMD with BRG showed superior CAL gain relative to EMD alone at 12 months. In conclusion, PRT showed improved regenerative outcomes compared with OFD in East Asians, while BM application appeared less efficient than in non-East Asians. BRG supplementation provided additional clinical benefits in EMD application.

BACKGROUND: Digital dental technology (DDT) has progressed and been introduced to Taiwan in the recent years, gradually changing the industry ecology. Many studies have demonstrated that DDT is more accurate and faster than conventional dental technology. However, there is a paucity of research exploring dental technicians' perspectives on digital dental techniques, and their burnout, job satisfaction, and turnover intention. METHODS: This cross-sectional survey with convenience sampling was conducted at the conference venue of the Taiwan Association of Dental Technology to investigate the perspectives of dental technicians. We used the snowballing method in this study; two sampling methods were adopted, a convenience sampling of dental technicians to complete a survey, followed by asking the survey participants of the convenience sample to invite their colleagues to participate in the online survey. The survey questionnaire included questions on demographics, work-related information, acceptance and experiences of dental technicians toward DDT, occupational burnout, job satisfaction, and turnover intention. Regression models were used to determine the predictors of job satisfaction and determinants of turnover intention. RESULTS: In total, 341 valid questionnaires were obtained. Overall, the participants reported long working hours (95.5%), positive score on the DDT acceptance scale, moderate job satisfaction, higher personal burnout, and work burnout, along with lower over-commitment. Among them, 32.9% and 28.2% reported the intention to leave their organization and profession, respectively. The stepwise multiple regression model revealed that higher work burnout decreased job satisfaction, while higher DDT acceptance and position as employer increased job satisfaction. The binary logistic regression models revealed that geographical area of workplace, work burnout, and job satisfaction were significant predictors of turnover intentions. CONCLUSIONS: Many Taiwanese dental technicians reported turnover intentions and higher burnout. With the trend of digitalization in the dental industry, even though most dental technicians had a positive outlook toward DDT, its influence on job satisfaction appears limited. Retaining good and professional talents required of a dental technician is crucial, especially as Taiwan's dental care becomes increasingly specialized. Strategies for improving the work environment and occupational health of dental technicians should thus be the focus of future studies.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Review of literature, evaluation of the styloid process (SP) using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) has not been performed in a Taiwanese population. Our study aimed to evaluate the different characteristics of SP using CBCT in a Taiwanese population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: CBCT scans of 121 patients (55 males, 66 females; mean age, 27 ± 9.09 years) were evaluated to assess the length, morphological type, calcification pattern, and angulation of the SP. A SP length greater than or equal to 30.00 mm is considered to indicate an elongated SP (ESP). ESP was classified in terms of morphology as Type I: uninterrupted; Type II: pseudo-articulated; or Type III: segmented. The calcification pattern of SP was categorized as Type A: calcified outline; Type B: partially calcified; Type C: nodular; or Type D: completely calcified. The transverse and sagittal angles between the bilateral SP were also measured. RESULTS: One-hundred and nine patients had a bilateral SP and 12 patients had a unilateral SP. The mean SP length was 26.34 ± 7.44 mm. Forty-two (34.71%) patients had an ESP. The most common ESP morphology was Type 1, followed by Type II, then Type III, while the calcification pattern prevalence was of the descending order Type B, Type A, Type C, and Type D. The mean transverse and sagittal angles were 66.90 ± 5.41° and 26.67° ± 6.50°, respectively. CONCLUSION: The present study was the first to evaluate the characteristics of SP in a Taiwanese population using CBCT. The data contribute a useful basis for clinical investigation of the SP in future.

BACKGROUND: Dental anxiety is associated with negative experiences of dental treatment and dental-visiting behavior. The Modified Dental Anxiety Scale (MDAS) is widely used for assessing dental anxiety. The study aims to establish the psychometric properties of a Chinese version of the MDAS based on the Taiwan sample (i.e., T-MDAS). METHODS: The T-MDAS and dental-visiting behavior and experience were assessed for 402 adult subjects recruited from community and clinical sites. The following psychometric properties were assessed: (a) internal consistency, (b) temporal stability, (c) criterion-related validity (i.e., the association with the score of Index of Dental Anxiety and Fear, IDAF-4C), (d) discrimination validity (i.e., the difference in scores between the subjects with and without a habit of a regular dental visit, and (e) the construct validity from a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). RESULTS: The T-MDAS showed good internal consistency (Cronbach's α = 0.88) and temporal stability (ρ = 0.69, p < 0.001). The score was significantly correlated with the score of the IDAF-4C (ρ = 0.76, p < 0.001) and differed between subjects who regularly visited a dentist or not, supporting good criterion-related validity and discrimination validity. Results from CFA supports good construct validity. Furthermore, higher dental anxiety was related to the lack of a regular dental visit, feeling pain during treatment, and feeling insufficient skills and empathy of dentists. A higher proportion of high-dental anxiety subjects in female subjects (8.5%), compared to male subjects (5.0%), was noted. CONCLUSIONS: The T-MDAS is a valid tool for assessing adult dental anxiety. The score is highly associated with dental-visiting behavior and experience of dental patients.

BACKGROUND: The volume of literature about serious gaming in dental education has increased, however, none of the previous studies have developed a serious game for closing the gap between preclinical and clinical training. OBJECTIVE: Virtual Dental Clinic (VDC) is a serious game that was created to help develop clinical reasoning skills in dental students. This study aimed to evaluate VDC as an educational tool and its effectiveness on clinical skill and knowledge gain among clerkship dental students. METHODS: The following three stages of VDC design and testing were addressed from 2016 to 2020: development, validation, and application. The VDC was developed using Unity game engine. In the validation stage, the content validity was reviewed by five visiting staff; construct validity and face validity were examined by 9 postgraduate-year dentists and 14 clerkship dental students. Concurrent validity and predictive validity were examined by 34 fifth-year dental students during their clerkship from September, 2018 to May, 2019, the associations between VDC experiences, clerkship performance, and the score on a national qualification test were explored. In the application stage, the VDC was set up as a self-learning tool in the Family Dentistry Department from August, 2019, quantitative and qualitative analyses were conducted using the 92 clerkship students' feedback. RESULTS: The VDC showed good validity and a high potential for education in practice. Students who have used VDC received significantly higher scores on qualification test (p = 0.029); the VDC experiences significantly predicted higher performance score on periodontics (p = 0.037) and endodontics (p = 0.040). After the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic, significantly higher proportion of students confirmed the value of VDC as an assistant tool for learning clinical reasoning (p = 0.019). CONCLUSIONS: The VDC as an educational tool, and the effectiveness on clinical reasoning skills and knowledge gain among clerkship dental students has been validated and confirmed in this study.

BACKGROUND: Dental fear is associated with the experience of prior dental treatment and avoidance of dental visits. It remains unclear if individuals show an intention of avoidance (IA) towards treatments that they have not received (i.e., non-experienced dental treatment). The study aims to investigated (a) if individuals showed an increased fear and IA to non-experienced, compared to experienced dental treatment, and (b) if fear and IA to non-experienced treatment is associated with dental anxiety. METHODS: Fear/IA of 12 common conditions of dental treatment of 402 adults were investigated. If subjects have experienced the condition, fear and IA were assessed based on subjects' prior experience (i.e., ExpFear/ExpIA). If they have not experienced the condition, fear and IA were assessed based on their anticipation (i.e., NExpFear/NExpIA). Trait dental anxiety was assessed using the Index of Dental Anxiety and Fear (IDAF-4C+). RESULTS: (A) NExpFear and NExpIA were significantly higher than ExpFear and ExpIA, respectively. (B) The IDAF-4C+ scores are positively correlated with NExpFear/NExpIA and negatively correlated with the magnification of fear (i.e., the discrepancy in the fear/IA of non-experienced vs. experienced conditions). (C) The condition 'extraction of a wisdom tooth' and 'root canal treatment' showed the highest ratings on NExpFear. CONCLUSIONS: Individuals may develop a high degree of fear and IA of the treatment they have not received. Trait dental anxiety plays a key role in the fear of non-experienced treatment.

Liver transplantation (LT) candidates often present with poor oral hygiene, which could potentially lead to systemic infections and sepsis owing to their cirrhotic state. In this study, we investigated the oral health status of LT candidates and propose guidance for the detection and treatment of encountered oral lesions among these patients. The decayed, missing, and filled teeth (DMFT) index was determined through oral examination. The presence of dental calculus was detected using panoramic radiography and defined by the radiopaque dental calculus (RDC). From January 2011 to August 2018, 56 LT candidates were enrolled with a median follow-up of 39 months. The overall mean numbers of decayed, missing, and filled teeth among these patients were 2.7 ± 2.8, 10.9 ± 8.3, and 5.4 ± 4.5, respectively. Eighteen patients (32.1%) had RDC. The 5-year survival rates of all 56 patients was 57.7%, while that of those who either received LT (23 patients) or not were 82.1% and 39.8%, respectively. A Cox regression model revealed better overall survival of patients after LT (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR] = 0.067, p = 0.001), worse survival among patients with RDC (aHR = 3.468, p = 0.010), at Child-Pugh stages B and C (aHR for stage B = 11.889, p = 0.028; aHR for stage C = 19.257, p = 0.013) compared to patients at Child-Pugh stage A, and those with a model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) score ≥25 (aHR = 13.721, p = 0.018). This study demonstrates that RDC was associated with worse prognosis in LT candidates. We therefore recommend that interprofessional collaboration should be a routine preoperative procedure for the evaluation of oral hygiene among LT candidates.

Emotion is a crucial aspect of human health, and emotion recognition systems serve important roles in the development of neurofeedback applications. Most of the emotion recognition methods proposed in previous research take predefined EEG features as input to the classification algorithms. This paper investigates the less studied method of using plain EEG signals as the classifier input, with the residual networks (ResNet) as the classifier of interest. ResNet having excelled in the automated hierarchical feature extraction in raw data domains with vast number of samples (e.g., image processing) is potentially promising in the future as the amount of publicly available EEG databases has been increasing. Architecture of the original ResNet designed for image processing is restructured for optimal performance on EEG signals. The arrangement of convolutional kernel dimension is demonstrated to largely affect the model's performance on EEG signal processing. The study is conducted on the Shanghai Jiao Tong University Emotion EEG Dataset (SEED), with our proposed ResNet18 architecture achieving 93.42% accuracy on the 3-class emotion classification, compared to the original ResNet18 at 87.06% accuracy. Our proposed ResNet18 architecture has also achieved a model parameter reduction of 52.22% from the original ResNet18. We have also compared the importance of different subsets of EEG channels from a total of 62 channels for emotion recognition. The channels placed near the anterior pole of the temporal lobes appeared to be most emotionally relevant. This agrees with the location of emotion-processing brain structures like the insular cortex and amygdala.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Dental visits are a high risk activity during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study investigated the utilization of emergency dental services and clinical practical attitudes of dental residents in this period. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective chart data from 13th November 2019 to 31st March 2020 in Kaohsiung Medical University Hospital, Taiwan were used. We obtained electronic medical records to review data from 515 patients who visited the emergency department with dental complaints and we contacted the 26 residents assigned to act as primary care providers to participate in this study. RESULTS: After the COVID-19 outbreak, 17% fewer patients had dental emergency utilization at a hospital emergency center relative to the previous period. A survey of residents also showed a decline in the number of patients. There were no significant differences of patients' problems and diagnoses between the two periods. After the COVID-19 outbreak, 61.5% of the residents were afraid of being infected by a patient's disease and the proportions of dentists wearing waterproof gowns, face shields, and surgical hair caps were 76.9%, 88.5%, and 76.3%, respectively. These variables increased significantly after the outbreak of COVID-19. CONCLUSION: Despite the trend of a decreased number of patients, their utilization of dental emergency services seems to be similar before and after the COVID-19 outbreak, possibly related to strict hospital infection control policies and the relatively low number of COVID-19 confirmed patients internationally at that time.

Although recent medical studies have found a significant correlation between betel quid chewing and oral cancer, some Taiwanese aboriginal people continue the traditional betel quid culture. Using the transtheoretical model framework, we conducted a qualitative study to examine the stages of behavioral change in betel quid chewing in the Paiwan sociocultural context. We conducted in-depth interviews with 20 aboriginal chewers of betel quid. Results of a content analysis showed significant patterns in the precontemplation, contemplation, action, and maintenance stages, but none in the preparation stage. Relapse was most likely to occur between the contemplation and action stages. In the precontemplation stage, interviewees showed no motivation to change their chewing behavior due to shared positive attitudes of psychosocial benefits and cultural identity. In the contemplation stage, dependent-type chewers were aware of oral damage and pain caused by chewing betel quid but could not resist their cravings; social-type chewers showed approach-avoidance conflicts between social needs and cessation. Chewers entered the action stage once they decided to quit; "to stop immediately" or "reduce quantity" were the most frequent strategies reported. In this stage, chewers endured withdrawal symptoms and refused betel quid from others but tended to relapse easily. Participants entering the maintenance stage were not affected by withdrawal symptoms and did not have ulcers or pain. Future research should identify ways to preserve traditional aboriginal culture while encouraging aboriginal people to quit betel quid chewing to promote the prevention and treatment of oral cancer.

We evaluated the effect of toothbrush/dentifrice brushing on the weight variation and surface properties of different denture bases. Four denture base materials (conventional heat cure, high impact, CAD/CAM, and polyamide resins) were subjected to toothbrushing abrasion (50,000 strokes). The weight value, surface roughness, and topography of each group were determined before and after toothbrushing. The hardness was measured by the Vickers hardness test. Data were analyzed using ANOVA and Bonferroni tests. After toothbrushing, the weight of the polyamide resin had significantly increased; significant weight losses were observed for conventional heat cure and high impact resins, but none for the CAD/CAM resin. The surface roughness of each group increased significantly owing to the wear caused by toothbrushing. The weight variation and surface roughness were not affected by the hardness. Our results suggested that denture base materials deteriorate after brushing with toothpaste, in which the polyamide resin exhibited lower levels of abrasion.

This study develops an ultrasensitive electrical device, the silicon nanowire-field effect transistor (SiNW-FET) for detection of cardiac troponin I (cTnI) in obesity induced myocardial injury. The biosensor device utilizes metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) compatible top-down methodology for the fabrication process. After fabrication, the surface of the SiNW is modified with the cTnI monoclonal antibody (Mab-cTnI) upon covalent immobilization to capture cTnI antigen. The sensitivity of the device is also examined using cTnI at different concentrations with the lowest detection limit of 0.016 ng/mL. The electrocardiogram (ECG), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and superior vena cave (SVC) provide more information about cardiac responses in a mouse model of acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Further, magnetic resonance imaging helps to evaluate the cardiac output of an obesity induced myocardial injury mouse model. These methods play an essential role in monitoring the obesity based cardiac injury and hence, these studies were carried out. This is the first report to use the ECG, MRI, and SVC sampling methods to study the obesity based cardiac injury involving Syrian hamsters as animal models. The proposed SiNW-FET in this study shows greater sensitivity than the previously developed devices and demonstrates great potential for future applications in point-of-care (POC) diagnosis.
