OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to test the low sensitivity of the Allberg and Miles index to the stifle opening angle, evaluate the displacement of the patella after a Modified Maquet Technique using this index and assess the incidence of patellar luxation post-Modified Maquet Technique in dogs. STUDY DESIGN: Medical records were reviewed from 2012 to 2017. Allberg Miles index were determined for each stifle pre- and postoperatively, as well as the stifle joint opening of each case. Occurrence of patellar luxation was recorded. RESULTS: 137 stifles on 116 dogs were reviewed. The stifle opening angle did not influence the Allberg Miles index. Pre- and postoperative index showed a distal displacement of the patella after a Modified Maquet Procedure, especially at 135° of stifle opening angle. Only 1/137 cases demonstrated patellar luxation after the surgery. CONCLUSION: Based on our statistical analysis, we were able to conclude that within the maximum stifle opening angle range recorded in our series of cases; the Allberg Miles index variation was not significant. While patellar baja is clearly induced by the Modified Maquet Technique, the latter did not seem to predispose patients to post-operative patellar luxation in our study population.

BACKGROUND: The cranial cruciate ligament rupture is one of the most common orthopaedic diseases encountered in dogs. Surgical techniques have been developed to stabilize the stifle, with an overall accepted benefit of tibial osteotomies among which is the tibial tuberosity advancement (TTA). Prior to surgery, the required TTA must be determined on a strict lateral radiographical view of the affected stifle with femur and tibia at an angle of 135° as initially recommended. This value, initially determined in only two dog breeds, has been considered the mean standard value of the canine stifle angle during the mid-stance phase. METHODS: We sought to determine if this particular stifle angle around mid-stance phase was similar among multiple dog breeds. We built up a custom-made radiographic system for stifle angle measurement in standing dogs. RESULTS: A mean value of stifle angle of 145° was obtained. Mean stifle angle at mid-stance phase in a healthy dog is regularly higher than 135° and is likely breed and individual dependent. CONCLUSIONS: The pre-operative measurement of the required TTA made on stifles in 145° extension, a value close to full physiological extension could contribute to decreasing the incidence of late post-operative meniscal lesion, consecutive to underestimation of TTA.

In order to further develop the potential applications of lignin biomass, the research on lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) and their nanocomposites has attracted increasing attention. In this study, a facile and no chemical modification approach to prepare stable alkali lignin nanospheres is presented. The nanospheres around 85-125 nm were prepared through the π-π interactions between molecules in the self-assembly process. Lignin alkali was dissolved in ethylene glycol at different initial concentrations and subsequently ultrasound and dialysis treatment were conducted to prepare LNPs. The prepared LNPs had zeta potentials between -20 mV and -40 mV, and they were electrostatically stable over the pH range of 3 to 12 in aqueous solution. The chemical structure of LNPs was not significantly modified compared to lignin. Meanwhile the increased content of carboxyl and aliphatic hydroxyl groups in the LNPs structure was observed. Furthermore, the thermal stability and solubility in organic solvents (ethanol, acetone and THF) of LNPs were enhanced compared to those of lignin. In vitro cell viability evaluation indicated that the prepared LNPs had no cytotoxicity and excellent biocompatibility with mouse fibroblast. Therefore, we proposed here the production of high-quality and renewable LNPs, which will provide a novel perspective for multifunctional applications of bio-based nanomaterials.

OBJECTIVE: To identify risk factors for tibial damage associated with the modified Maquet technique (MMT) in dogs with cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) disease. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study. SAMPLE POPULATION: One hundred and seventy-four stifles from 147 client-owned dogs. METHODS: Medical records of dogs diagnosed with CCL disease and treated with the current version of MMT were reviewed. Dogs were included if immediate postoperative radiographs were available. Cortical hinge fracture or fissure, tibial tuberosity fracture, and diaphyseal fractures of the tibia were recorded. Age, body weight (BW), thickness of the tibial cortical hinge, and angle of opening of the osteotomy were tested as potential risk factors for tibial damage by univariate logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: Tibial damage included intraoperative tibial fissures in 37% of MMTs, intraoperative fractures of the cortical hinge in 3.4% of MMTs, postoperative tibial fractures in 14% of MMTs. Risk factors for intraoperative fissure included BW (P = .0153) and thickness of cortical hinge (P = .0006). The angle of opening of the osteotomy was identified as a risk factor for intraoperative cortical hinge fracture (P = .0034), angles below 11° being preventive. No risk factor was identified for postoperative fracture. CONCLUSION: Based on these results, preventive measures against tibial damage associated with MMT should include: a thickness of cortical hinge based on the equation related to the BW; a length of osteotomy adjusted to the amount of TTA with an osteotomy angle below 10°; and slow advancement of the tibial tuberosity.

BACKGROUND: We have previously demonstrated that a mixture of Curcuminoids extract, hydrolyzed COllagen and green Tea extract (CCOT) inhibited inflammatory and catabolic mediator's synthesis by bovine and human chondrocytes. A randomly allocated, double-blind, prospective, placebo-controlled study was performed to evaluate the efficacy of a diet containing this CCOT mixture on dogs with naturally occurring osteoarthritis (OA). Therefore, 42 owner's dogs with OA were randomly assigned to receive for 3 months an experimental diet (control) or the same diet supplemented with CCOT. RESULTS: Ground reaction forces did not show statistical differences between groups. After 3 months of feeding, there was a significant reduction of pain at manipulation in the CCOT group, but not in the control group. The evolution for pain at manipulation depended on the diet. The three other parameters evaluated by veterinary subjective assessment (lameness, pain at palpation and joint mobility) did not show statistical differences. Concerning owner subjective assessment, pain severity score worsened in the control group but remained stable in CCOT group. The evolution for pain severity depended on the diet. No statistical difference was found for pain interference, except for the ability to rise to standing from lying down, which was significantly improved in the CCOT compared to the control group. Serum OA biomarkers did not show statistical differences. CONCLUSIONS: Objective variables measured, such as ground reaction forces and OA biomarkers, did not show statistical differences. However, indicators of pain appeared reduced in dogs receiving CCOT mixture for 3 months. The difference of evolution between groups suggests that a greater number of dogs may be necessary to reach a stronger effect on other parameters.

Cranial cruciate ligament (CrCL) deficiency is the leading cause of lameness of the canine stifle. Application of tension in the quadriceps muscle could trigger cranial tibial translation in case of CrCL rupture. We replaced the quadriceps muscle and the gastrocnemius muscle by load cells and turn-buckles. First, eight canine limbs were placed in a servo-hydraulic testing machine, which applied 50% of body weight (BW). In a second phase, the CrCL was transected, and the limbs were tested in a similar manner. In a third phase, a quadriceps pretension of 15% BW was applied and limbs were again tested in a similar manner. Cranial tibial translation was significantly decreased in CrCL deficient stifles (p < 0.05) when quadriceps pretension was applied. These findings indicate that quadriceps pretension could play a role in the stability of a CrCL deficient stifle and should then be considered in rehabilitation programs and conservative treatment of CrCL rupture in dogs.
