BACKGROUND: Bariatric surgery is one of the most effective ways to treat morbid obesity, and postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) is one of the common complications after bariatric surgery. At present, the mechanism of the high incidence of PONV after weight-loss surgery has not been clearly explained, and this study aims to investigate the effect of surgical position on PONV in patients undergoing bariatric surgery. AIM: To explore the effect of the operative position during bariatric surgery on PONV. METHODS: Data from obese patients, who underwent laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) in the authors' hospital between June 2020 and February 2022 were divided into 2 groups and retrospectively analyzed. Multivariable logistic regression analysis and the t-test were used to study the influence of operative position on PONV. RESULTS: There were 15 cases of PONV in the supine split-leg group (incidence rate, 50%) and 11 in the supine group (incidence rate, 36.7%) (P = 0.297). The mean operative duration in the supine split-leg group was 168.23 ± 46.24 minutes and 140.60 ± 32.256 minutes in the supine group (P < 0.05). Multivariate analysis revealed that operative position was not an independent risk factor for PONV (odds ratio = 1.192, 95% confidence interval: 0.376-3.778, P = 0.766). CONCLUSION: Operative position during LSG may affect PONV; however, the difference in the incidence of PONV was not statistically significant. Operative position should be carefully considered for obese patients before surgery.

Anthocyanins are natural flavonoids with a high antioxidant power and many associated health benefits, but most rice produce little amounts of these compounds. In this study, 141 MYB transcription factors in 15 chromosomes, including the nucleus-localised ZlMYB1 (Zla03G003370) and ZlMYB2 (Zla15G015220), were discovered in Zizania latifolia. Overexpression of ZlMYB1 or ZlMYB2 in rice seeds induced black pericarps, and flavonoid content, antioxidant capacity, and α-glucosidase and tyrosinase inhibition effects significantly increased compared to those in the control seeds. ZlMYB1 and ZlMYB2 overexpression induced the upregulation of 764 and 279 genes, respectively, and the upregulation of 162 and 157 flavonoids, respectively, linked to a black pericarp phenotype. The expression of flavonoid 3'-hydroxylase and UDP-glycose flavonoid glycosyltransferase, as well as the activities of these enzymes, increased significantly in response to ZlMYB1 or ZlMYB2 overexpression. This study systematically confirmed that the overexpression of ZlMYB1 and ZlMYB2 promotes flavonoid biosynthesis (especially of anthocyanins) in rice.

Antimicrobial blue light (aBL) is utilized as a new approach to inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). Mediated by the endogenous chromophore, aBL possesses the similar photokilling property with aPDI (antimicrobial photodynamic inactivation), however, their mechanistic discrepancies in triggering the death of staphylococcal cells are not yet understood. Here, we describe the use of a 460-nm-LED to curb the viability of S. aureus. According to the results, the bacterial survival was sharply decreased when blue light was applied, reaching a maximum of 4.11 ± 0.04 log10 units. Moreover, the membrane integrity was damaged by aBL, causing the leakage of intracellular DNA. Transcriptomic analysis indicates the divergent gene expression upon either aBL or aPDI, with pathways such as transport, DNA repair, expression regulation and porphyrin massively affected by aBL. Among the commonly regulated genes, LrgA was underpinned on account of its involvement with biofilm formation and protein transport. By comparing the wildtype with the LrgA-overexpressing (LrgA+) strain, the survival rate, membrane penetration, surface structure and biofilm formation were, to a varying degree, improved for LrgA+, which may suggest that LrgA plays essential roles in modulating the responsiveness of S. aureus. Besides, LrgA may function through regulating the expression of autolysis-related systems. Finally, LrgA overexpression did not attenuate but aggravate the impairment induced by aPDI, showcasing a distinct responsive strategy from aBL. Taken together, this study unveils a unique molecular alteration for the aBL-mediated inactivation, providing the basis of utilizing blue light to reduce the harm brought by S. aureus.

On the basis of a novel ynol-diene cyclization developed as a rapid access to tropone unit, the first divergent strategy to 17-nor-cephalotane diterpenoids has been successfully established. Combining with a bioinspired stereoselective dual hydrogenation, the divergent total synthesis of (+)-3-deoxyfortalpinoid F, (+)-harringtonolide, (-)-fortalpinoids M/N/P, and analog (-)-20-deoxocephinoid P have been achieved in 14-17 linear longest steps starting from commercially available materials.

Li-rich Mn-based (LMR) layered oxides are considered promising cathode materials for high energy-density Li-ion batteries. Nevertheless, challenges such as irreversible oxygen loss at the surface during the initial charge, alteration of the bulk structure, and poor rate performance impede their path to commercialisation. Most modification methods focus on specific layers, making the overall impact of modifications at various depths on the properties of materials unclear. This research presents an approach by using doping to adjust both surface and bulk properties; the materials with surface and bulk fluoride anion doping are synthesised to explore the connection between doping depth, structural and electrochemical stability. The surface-doped material significantly improves the initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE) from 77.85% to 85.12% and limits phase transitions, yet it does not enhance rate performance. Conversely, doping in bulk stands out by improving both rate performance and cyclic stability: it increases the specific discharge capacity by around 60 mAh g-1 and enhances capacity retention from 57.69% to 82.26% after 300 cycles at 5C. These results highlight a notable dependence of material properties on depth, providing essential insights into the mechanisms of surface and bulk modifications.

BACKGROUND: Statins are widely used for treating patients with ischemic stroke at risk of secondary cerebrovascular events. It is unknown whether Asian populations benefit from more intensive statin-based therapy for stroke recurrence. Therefore, in the present study we evaluated the effectiveness and safety of high-dose and moderate-dose statins for patients who had experienced mild ischemic stroke during the acute period. METHODS AND RESULTS: This multicenter prospective study included patients with mild ischemic stroke who presented within 72 hours of symptom onset. The outcomes of patients in the high-intensity and moderate-intensity statin treatment groups were compared, with the main efficacy outcome being stroke recurrence and the primary safety end point being intracranial hemorrhage. The propensity score matching method was employed to control for imbalances in baseline variables. Subgroup analyses were conducted to evaluate group differences. In total, the data of 2950 patients were analyzed at 3 months, and the data of 2764 patients were analyzed at 12 months due to loss to follow-up. According to the multivariable Cox analyses adjusted for potential confounders, stroke recurrence occurred similarly in the high-intensity statin and moderate-intensity statin groups (3 months: adjusted hazard ratio [HR], 1.12 [95% CI, 0.85-1.49]; P=0.424; 12 months: adjusted HR, 1.08 [95% CI, 0.86-1.34]; P=0.519). High-intensity statin therapy was associated with an increased risk of intracranial hemorrhage (3 months: adjusted HR, 1.81 [95% CI, 1.00-3.25]; P=0.048; 12 months: adjusted HR, 1.86 [95% CI, 1.10-3.16]; P=0.021). The results from the propensity score-matched analyses were consistent with those from the Cox proportional hazards analysis. CONCLUSIONS: Compared with moderate-intensity statin therapy, high-dose statin therapy may not decrease the risk of mild, noncardiogenic ischemic stroke recurrence but may increase the risk of intracranial hemorrhage. Cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) is one of the most common nervous system diseases. Hypertension and neuroinflammation are considered important risk factors for the development of CSVD and white matter (WM) lesions. We used the spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR) as a model of early-onset CSVD and administered epimedium flavonoids (EF) for three months. The learning and memorization abilities were tested by new object recognition test. The pathological changes of WM were assessed using magnetic resonance imaging, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Luxol fast blue and Black Gold staining. Oligodendrocytes (OLs) and myelin basic protein were detected by immunohistochemistry. The ultrastructure of the tight junctions was examined using TEM. Microglia and astrocytes were detected by immunofluorescence. RNA-seq was performed on the corpus callosum of rats. The results revealed that EF could significantly improve the learning and memory impairments in SHR, alleviate the injury and demyelination of WM nerve fibers, promote the differentiation of oligodendrocyte precursor cells (OPCs) into mature OLs, inhibit the activation of microglia and astrocytes, inhibit the expression of p38 MAPK/NF-κB p65/NLRP3 and inflammatory cytokines, and increase the expression of tight-junction related proteins ZO-1, occludin, and claudin-5. RNA-seq analysis showed that the neurotrophin signaling pathway played an important role in the disease. RT-qPCR and WB results showed that EF could regulate the expression of nerve growth factor and brain-derived neurotrophic factor and their downstream related proteins in the neurotrophin signaling pathway, which might explain the potential mechanism of EF's effects on the cognitive impairment and WM damage caused by hypertension.

The migration, proliferation, and apoptosis of trophoblastic cells play a crucial role in ensuring the effective preservation of pregnancy at the maternal-fetal interface. Any deviations in the structure and function of these cells might potentially result in the development of numerous pregnancy-related disorders, including missed abortion (MA). This study involved the examination of semaphorin 4A (SEMA4A) expression in missed abortion (n = 18) and normal early pregnancy (n = 18) villus. The findings of this study indicate a statistically significant decrease in the expression of SEMA4A in the villi of individuals diagnosed with missed abortion, as compared to the control group. The results of our vitro study showed that SEMA4A promoted the migration and proliferation of trophoblast cells and inhibited their apoptosis. Subsequent studies have shown that SEMA4A may be involved in regulating p-STAT3/STAT3, MMP9, bcl-2, and BAX levels. In summary, the findings of this study indicate a correlation between the decreased level of SEMA4A in chorionic villi and missed abortion. These results offer novel theoretical insights into the proper implantation and development of SEMA4A embryos at the maternal-fetal interface.

Introduction: Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch, a traditional Chinese medicinal herb known for its diverse pharmacological effects including heat-clearing, detoxification, phlegm dissolving, and cough relief, has experienced an exponential increase in demand due to its expanding clinical use and development prospects. Currently, large-scale cell culture stands out as one of the most promising biotechnological approaches for producing bioactive compounds from medicinal plants. However, the problem of cell browning represents a significant bottleneck in industrial applications of cell culture. Methods: This study focuses on the Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch cells from the Ordos plateau, aiming to elucidate the enzymatic browning process during plant cell culture. Key substrates and genes involved in enzymatic browning were identified by metabolome and transcriptome analysis of normal and browning cells. Results: Metabolome analysis reveals significant changes in the levels of chalcone, isoflavone, imidazole-pyrimidine, purine nucleosides, organic oxides, carboxylic acids and their derivatives, benzene and its derivatives, flavonoids, 2-arylated benzofuran flavonoids, diazanaphthalenes and fatty acyls within browning cells. In particular, chalcones, isoflavones, and flavones compounds account for a higher proportion of these changes. Furthermore, these compounds collectively show enrichment in four metabolic pathways: Isoflavone biosynthesis pathway; Cutin suberine and wax biosynthesis pathway; Aminoacyl-tRNA biosynthesis pathway; Isoquinoline alkaloid biosynthesis pathway; Transcriptome analysis revealed that the MYB transcription factor is a key regulator of flavonoid synthesis during the browning process in cells. In addition, 223 differentially expressed genes were identified, including phenylpropane, shikimic acid, glycolysis, and pentose phosphate pathways. Among these genes, 23 are directly involved in flavonoid biosynthesis; qPCR validation showed that eight genes (GlPK, GlPAL, Gl24CL, Gl1PDT, Gl3CHI, GlC4H, Gl2F3'H, and Gl2CCR) were up-regulated in browning cells compared to normal cells. These findings corroborate the sequencing results and underscore the critical role of these genes in cellular browning. Discussion: Consequently, modulation of their expression offers promising strategies for effective control of cellular browning issues.

BACKGROUND: N6-Methyladenosine (m6A) is a common messenger RNA (mRNA) modification that affects various physiological processes in stress responses. However, the role of m6A modifications in plants responses to herbivore stress remains unclear. RESULTS: Here, we found that an infestation of brown planthopper (Nilaparvata lugens) female adults enhanced the resistance of rice to N. lugens. The m6A methylome analysis of N. lugens-infested and uninfested rice samples was performed to explore the interaction between rice and N. lugens. The m6A methylation mainly occurred in genes that were actively expressed in rice following N. lugens infestation, while an analysis of the whole-genomic mRNA distribution of m6A showed that N. lugens infestation caused an overall decrease in the number of m6A methylation sites across the chromosomes. The m6A methylation of genes involved in the m6A modification machinery and several defense-related phytohormones (jasmonic acid and salicylic acid) pathways was increased in N. lugens-infested rice compared to that in uninfested rice. In contrast, m6A modification levels of growth-related phytohormone (auxin and gibberellin) biosynthesis-related genes were significantly attenuated during N. lugens infestation, accompanied by the down-regulated expression of these transcripts, indicating that rice growth was restricted during N. lugens attack to rapidly optimize resource allocation for plant defense. Integrative analysis of the differential patterns of m6A methylation and the corresponding transcripts showed a positive correlation between m6A methylation and transcriptional regulation. CONCLUSION: The m6A modification is an important strategy for regulating the expression of genes involved in rice defense and growth during rice-N. lugens interactions. These findings provide new ideas for formulating strategies to control herbivorous pests. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

N6-methyladenosine (m6A) is the most prevalent modification in cellular RNA which orchestrates diverse physiological and pathological processes during stress response. However, the differential m6A modifications that cope with herbivore stress in resistant and susceptible crop varieties remain unclear. Here, we found that rice stem borer (RSB) larvae grew better on indica rice (e.g., MH63, IR64, Nanjing 11) than on japonica rice varieties (e.g., Nipponbare, Zhonghua 11, Xiushui 11). Then, transcriptome-wide m6A profiling of representative resistant (Nipponbare) and susceptible (MH63) rice varieties were performed using a nanopore direct RNA sequencing approach, to reveal variety-specific m6A modifications against RSB. Upon RSB infestation, m6A methylation occurred in actively expressed genes in Nipponbare and MH63, but the number of methylation sites decreased across rice chromosomes. Integrative analysis showed that m6A methylation levels were closely associated with transcriptional regulation. Genes involved in herbivorous resistance related to mitogen-activated protein kinase, jasmonic acid (JA), and terpenoid biosynthesis pathways, as well as JA-mediated trypsin protease inhibitors, were heavily methylated by m6A, and their expression was more pronounced in RSB-infested Nipponbare than in RSB-infested MH63, which may have contributed to RSB resistance in Nipponbare. Therefore, dynamics of m6A modifications act as the main regulatory strategy for expression of genes involved in plant-insect interactions, which is attributed to differential responses of resistant and susceptible rice varieties to RSB infestation. These findings could contribute to developing molecular breeding strategies for controlling herbivorous pests.

BACKGROUND: Stretch service goals strive to motivate healthcare practitioners to maintain high quality in service provision. However, little is known about how stretch service goals trigger nurses' unethical behavior. RESEARCH AIM: This study aimed to investigate the influence of stretch service goals on nurses' unethical behavior, as well as the mediating effects of patient entitlement and nurses' emotional dissonance. RESEARCH DESIGN: A quantitative cross-sectional study is designed. PARTICIPANTS AND RESEARCH CONTEXT: We sourced data by conducting a time-lagged three-wave survey study from March to September 2020. Random sampling was used, and data were collected from 422 nurse-patient pairs in Chinese hospitals. Bootstrapping method and structural equation modeling were employed to verify the conceptual model. ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS: The study was approved by the designated authority within hospitals and ethical committees. RESULTS: Stretch service goals are not directly related to nurses' unethical behavior. Stretch service goals can trigger nurses' unethical behavior via patient entitlement. Patient entitlement and nurses' emotional dissonance play a chain-mediating role between stretch service goals and nurses' unethical behavior. CONCLUSIONS: In the context of the healthcare industry, nurses may engage in unethical behavior due to the pressure of achieving stretch service goals. This study contributes to opening the "black box" of stretch service goals and nurses' unethical behavior by exploring the chain-mediating effect of patient entitlement and nurses' emotional dissonance.

In this paper, we formally address universal object detection, which aims to detect every category in every scene. The dependence on human annotations, the limited visual information, and the novel categories in open world severely restrict the universality of detectors. We propose UniDetector, a universal object detector that recognizes enormous categories in the open world. The critical points for UniDetector are: 1) it leverages images of multiple sources and heterogeneous label spaces in training through image-text alignment, which guarantees sufficient information for universal representations. 2) it involves heterogeneous supervision training, which alleviates the dependence on the limited fully-labeled images. 3) it generalizes to open world easily while keeping the balance between seen and unseen classes. 4) it further promotes generalizing to novel categories through our proposed decoupling training manner and probability calibration. These contributions allow UniDetector to detect over 7k categories, the largest measurable size so far, with only about 500 classes participating in training. Our UniDetector behaves the strong zero-shot ability on large-vocabulary datasets - it surpasses supervised baselines by more than 5% without seeing any corresponding images. On 13 detection datasets with various scenes, UniDetector also achieves state-of-the-art performance with only a 3% amount of training data.

Chemokines regulate the trophoblast dysfunction involved in the occurrence and development of pathological pregnancy, including missed abortions. In particular, CXC chemokine receptor type 5 mediates cell proliferation, migration, and inflammation; nonetheless, its role in missed abortions remains unclear. This study aimed to examine the expression of CXC chemokine receptor type 5 in missed abortions and to investigate the effects of CXC chemokine receptor type 5 on the biological behaviour of trophoblasts, as well as the underlying mechanisms. Our results indicated that CXC chemokine receptor type 5 was upregulated in the villi of women who experienced unexplained missed abortions, as compared with those who had normal pregnancies. CXC chemokine receptor type 5 inhibited the proliferation and migration of human first-trimester trophoblast/simian virus cells but promoted cell apoptosis. With respect to its mechanisms, CXC chemokine receptor type 5 activated the extracellular signal-regulated protein kinase 1/2 signalling pathway and upregulated the secretion of interleukin-6; however, it had no effect on the secretion of tumour necrosis factor-α. In conclusion, our findings suggest that CXC chemokine receptor type 5 induces trophoblast dysfunction and participates in the processes of unexplained missed abortions, wherein p-ERK and interleukin-6 may be involved.

Megalencephaly-polymicrogyria-polydactyly-hydrocephalus syndrome (MPPH), a type of overgrowth syndrome, is characterized by progressive megalencephaly, cortical brain malformations, and distal limb anomalies. Previous studies have revealed that the overactivity of the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase-Protein kinase B pathway and the increased cyclin D2 (CCND2) expression were the main factors contributing to this disease. Here, we present the case of a patient who exhibited megalencephaly, polymicrogyria, abnormal neuronal migration, and developmental delay. Serum tandem mass spectrometry and chromosome examination did not detect any metabolic abnormalities or copy number variants. However, whole-exome sequencing and Sanger sequencing revealed a de novo nonsense mutation (NM_001759.3: c.829C>T; p.Gln277X) in the CCND2 gene of the patient. Bioinformatics analysis predicted that this mutation may disrupt the structure and surface charge of the CCND2 protein. This disruption could potentially prevent polyubiquitination of CCND2, leading to its resistance against degradation. Consequently, this could drive cell division and growth by altering the activity of key cell cycle regulatory nodes, ultimately contributing to the development of MPPH. This study not only presents a new case of MPPH and expands the mutation spectrum of CCND2 but also enhances our understanding of the mechanisms connecting CCND2 with overgrowth syndromes.

RESUMEN

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Fuzheng Touxie Jiedu Huayu Decoction (FTJHD) is a commonly used clinical formula that has been found effective in resisting multidrug resistance-Pseudomonas aeruginosa in previous in vivo and in vitro studies. AIM OF THE STUDY: To investigate the antimicrobial effects of FTJHD and its drug-containing serum alone or in combination with ceftazidime on difficult-to-treat multidrug resistance-P. aeruginosa (DTMDR-P. aeruginosa). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The antibacterial effects of FTJHD and its drug-containing alone or in combination with ceftazidime against DTMDR-P. aeruginosa were examined by the tube dilution method and bacterial growth curves. The changes in the bacterial ultrastructure were examined by transmission electron microscopy. The biofilm formation ability of bacteria was examined by crystal violet staining and scanning electron microscopy. The expression of the MexAB-OprM efflux pump and quorum sensing system genes were validated through quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Molecular docking was used to evaluate the interaction between active components and the MexAB-OprM efflux pump. RESULTS: FTJHD-containing serums at 1-, 2-, 4-, and 8-fold concentrations reduced the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of ceftazidime against DTMDR-P. aeruginosa from 128 µg/mL to 64 µg/mL. Sub-inhibitory concentrations of ceftazidime in combination with FTJHD and FTJHD-containing serum prolonged the lag period of bacterial growth and reduced bacterial numbers. Additionally, 1/2 MIC of ceftazidime combined with FTJHD-containing serum significantly inhibited the activity of the MexAB-OprM efflux pump and quorum sensing system, thus reducing biofilm formation while causing more severe damage to the bacteria. Molecular docking revealed a strong affinity of quercetin, baicalein, luteolin, kaempferol, and ß-sitosterol for the efflux pump regulatory proteins OprM and MexR. CONCLUSION: FTJHD can exert synergistic anti-DTMDR-P. aeruginosa effects with ceftazidime by inhibiting biofilm formation mediated by the MexAB-OprM efflux pump and quorum sensing.

Rapid urbanization in many cities has produced massive amounts of problematic excavation soil. The direct disposal of untreated excavation soil often leads to significant land use and severe environmental concerns. A sustainable solution is to transform the soil waste into high-quality nano-calcined excavation soil (NCES) for application as a substitute for cement in construction. However, research in this area is very limited. This study presents a systematic investigation of the nano-sized calcined soil materials from preparation to application in cementitious material. The influence of milling parameters, including the rotational speed, milling duration, ball diameter, and milling strategy, was investigated to produce NCES with various specific surface areas. The effect of NCES substitution (15 wt% of Portland cement) in cementitious materials was then examined for mechanical performance, hydration dynamics, hydration products, and microstructure. A cement mix with very fine NCES (specific surface area of 108.76 m2/g) showed a 29.7% enhancement in mechanical strength and refined pore structure while a cement mix with un-grounded calcined soil showed a mechanical loss in comparison to the Control specimen. Delayed and reduced heat release at an early age was observed in a cement paste mixed with NCES. The underlying mechanism was investigated. The results of this work will contribute to the high-quality application of excavation soil waste.

Carexqingyuanensis, a new species of Cyperaceae from Guangdong Province, China, is described and illustrated. The new species is morphologically similar to Carexpeliosanthifolia F. T. Wang & Tang ex P. C. Li, but it can be distinguished by the racemose inflorescence branches appearing single (rarely binate or ternate) (vs. binate or ternate), one (rarely two or three) (vs. 1-3) spiked, male part of linear-cylindrical spikes much longer than the female part (vs. just male part short-cylindrical and slightly longer than female part), style base thickened (vs. not thickened) and perigynium horizontally patent with a short (vs. long and excurved) beak. Phylogenetic analysis, based on the two nuclear DNA regions (ETS 1f and ITS) and three chloroplast DNA regions (matK, ndhF and rps16), suggests that the new species belongs to sect. Siderostictaes.s. of subg. Siderosticta and shows a closer phylogenetic relationship to Carexscaposa C. B. Clarke.

The limited elasticity and inadequate bonding of hydrogels made from guar gum (GG) significantly hinder their widespread implementation in personalized wearable flexible electronics. In this study, we devise GG-based self-adhesive hydrogels by creating an interpenetrating network of GG cross-linked with acrylic, 4-vinylphenylboronic acid, and Ca2+. With the leverage of the dynamic interactions (hydrogen bonds, borate ester bonds, and coordination bonds) between -OH in GG and monomers, the hydrogel exhibits a high stretchability of 700%, superior mechanical stress of 110 kPa, and robust adherence to several substrates. The adhesion strength of 54 kPa on porcine skin is obtained. Furthermore, the self-adhesive hydrogel possesses stable conductivity, an elevated gauge factor (GF), and commendable durability. It can be affixed to the human body as a strain sensor to obtain precise monitoring of human movement behavior. Our research offers possibilities for the development of GG-based hydrogels and applications in wearable electronics and medical monitoring.

In response to the environmental implications of the massive quantities of excavation soil generated by global urbanization and infrastructure development, recent research efforts have explored the repurposing of calcined excavation soils as sustainable supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs). As it is still at an early stage, current research lacks systematic analysis across diverse soil deposits regarding their reactivity and mechanical properties within cementitious binders, despite recognized geographical variability in kaolinite content. Through comprehensive experimentation with soils sourced from four major southern Chinese cities, this study presents a pioneering assessment of the compressive strength, pozzolanic reactivity (X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance), and microstructural development (mercury intrusion porosimetry, scanning electron microscopy) of mortars modified by various calcined excavation soils (up to 28 days curing). The experimental data suggest that soils with a kaolinite content above 53.39% produce mortars of equal or superior quality to plain cement mixes, primarily due to their refined pore structures, microstructural densification, and enhanced hydration reactions. The findings highlight kaolinite-specifically, aluminum content-as the principal indicator of excavation soil viability for SCM application, suggesting a promising avenue for sustainable construction practices.
