RESUMEN

A novel DC-assisted fast hot-pressing (FHP) powder sintering technique was utilized to prepare Al/Diamond composites. Three series of orthogonal experiments were designed and conducted to explore the effects of sintering temperature, sintering pressure, and holding time on the thermal conductivity (TC) and sintering mechanism of an Al-50Diamond composite. Improper sintering temperatures dramatically degraded the TC, as relatively low temperatures (≤520 °C) led to the retention of a large number of pores, while higher temperatures (≥600 °C) caused unavoidable debonding cracks. Excessive pressure (≥100 MPa) induced lattice distortion and the accumulation of dislocations, whereas a prolonged holding time (≥20 min) would most likely cause the Al phase to aggregate into clusters due to surface tension. The optimal process parameters for the preparation of Al-50diamond composites by the FHP method were 560 °C-80 MPa-10 min, corresponding to a density and TC of 3.09 g cm-3 and 527.8 W m-1 K-1, respectively. Structural defects such as pores, dislocations, debonding cracks, and agglomerations within the composite strongly enhance the interfacial thermal resistance (ITR), thereby deteriorating TC performance. Considering the ITR of the binary solid-phase composite, the Hasselman-Johnson model can more accurately predict the TC of Al-50diamond composites for FHP technology under an optimal process with a 3.4% error rate (509.6 W m-1 K-1 to 527.8 W m-1 K-1). The theoretical thermal conductivity of the binary composites estimated by data modeling (Hasselman-Johnson Model, etc.) matches well with the actual thermal conductivity of the sintered samples using the FHP method.

We present the preparation of CoCu bimetallic nanoclusters (Co@Cu-BNCs) by a hydrothermal and one-step pyrolysis method to build a colorimetric and electrochemical dual-mode sensing platform for uric acid (UA) detection. In the presence of H2O2, Co@Cu-BNCs with peroxidase-mimicking activity may convert colorless 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to blue-colored oxidized TMB (oxTMB). However, due to the inhibitory effect of uric acid (UA) on the oxidation process of TMB, the characteristic absorption peak intensity of oxTMB decreased when UA was added into a mixed solution. In this approach, a colorimetric assay platform for the detection of UA was demonstrated, with a linear range of 0.1-195 µM and a low limit of detection of 0.06 µM (S/N ratio of 3). In addition, an even wider detection range is achieved in the electrochemical method, due to the pronounced electrocatalytic activity of Co@Cu-BNCs. The surface of the glassy carbon electrode was modified with Co@Cu-BNCs to build an electrochemical sensor for detecting UA. The sensor achieves a wider linear range from 2 to 1000 µM and a limit of detection of 0.61 µM (S/N ratio of 3). Moreover, the detection of UA in a human serum sample showed satisfactory results. The results proved that the colorimetric and electrochemical dual-mode detection platform was sensitive, convenient and accurate.

High-performance pressure sensors provide the necessary conditions for smart shoe applications. In this paper, the elastic Macroporous Graphene Aerogel (MGA) was synthesized via the modified Hummers' method, and it was further combined with Expanded-Thermoplastic polyurethane (ETPU) particles to assemble MGA-ETPU flexible sensors. The MGA-ETPU has a low apparent density (3.02 mg/cm3), high conductivity (0.024 S/cm) and fast response time (50 ms). The MGA-ETPU has a large linear sensing range (0-10 kPa) and consists of two linear regions: the low-pressure region (0 to 8 kPa) and the high-pressure region (8 to 10 kPa), with sensitivities of 0.08 kPa-1, and 0.246 kPa-1, respectively. Mechanical test results show that the MGA-ETPU sensor showed 19% reduction in maximum stress after 400 loading-unloading compression cycles at 40% strain. Electrical performance tests showed that the resistance of MGA-ETPU sensor decreased by 12.5% when subjected to sudden compression at 82% strain and returned to its original state within 0.05 s. Compared to existing flexible sensors, the MGA-ETPU sensors offer excellent performance and several distinct advantages, including ease of fabrication, high sensitivity, fast response time, and good flexibility. These remarkable features make them ideally suited as flexible pressure sensors for smart shoes.

Herein we report the colorimetry and an electrochemical for the determination of dopamine (DA) by using MnO2 nanoparticles and graphene nanosheets composite (MnO2@G) that display oxidase mimicking property. MnO2@G could directly oxidize colorless 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) into a blue product (oxTMB) without extra oxidants such as H2O2. Nevertheless, the presence of DA will inhibit the TMB oxidation due to the presence of the competitive reaction of MnO2@G and DA, giving a product color change from blue to colorless. A colorimetric assay for detect the concentration of DA was worked out according to this finding. Response is linear in the 0.1 to 15 µM DA concentration range, and the detection limit is 0.14 µM. Wider detection range is achieved in an electrochemical method which is due to the pronounced electrocatalytic activity of MnO2@G. The MnO2@G was modified on the surface of the glassy carbon electrode in order to fabricate one type electrochemical sensor. The sensor achieves a wide detection two linear ranges from 0.4 to 70 µM, with the detection limit of 1.16 µM. The detection of DA in real serum sample proved that the nanozyme based on MnO2@G could be developed into a colorimetry and electrochemical dual-readout sensing platform.

BACKGROUND: As the expansion of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits and pandemic emergency assistance programs ended in late 2021, little is known about subsequent trends in food insufficiency (FI) among households with children. OBJECTIVES: This research examined the association between SNAP participation and FI among households with children in the United States, particularly non-Hispanic Black (Black) and Hispanic households. METHODS: This cross-sectional analysis used Household Pulse Survey data collected from December 2021 to May 2022. Spatial analysis was conducted to visualize FI and SNAP participation rates across 50 states. With state SNAP policy rules as exogenous instruments and sociodemographic factors as control variables, 2-stage probit models were utilized to assess the SNAP and FI association among all (n = 135,074), Black (n = 13,940), and Hispanic households with children (n = 17,869). RESULTS: Approximately 13.9% [95% confidence interval (CI): 13.85%, 13.99%] of households experienced FI, and 20.4% (CI: 20.35%, 20.51%) received SNAP benefits. Among Black and Hispanic households, higher rates were observed, with 23.3% (CI: 23.12%, 23.4%) and 20.8% (CI: 20.61%, 20.95%) experiencing FI and 36.3% (CI: 36.1%, 36.5%) and 26.9% (CI: 26.61%, 27.13%) receiving SNAP benefits. These rates varied across states, ranging from 8% (Utah) to 21.1% (Mississippi) for FI and from 8.8% (Utah) to 32.7% (New Mexico) for SNAP participation. SNAP participants demonstrated a 12% lower likelihood of FI than nonparticipants (CI: -0.18, -0.05, P < 0.001). Among Black households, SNAP participants had a 29% lower likelihood of FI than nonparticipants (CI: -0.54, -0.03, P < 0.001). However, SNAP participation was not significant among Hispanic households (P = 0.99), nor did it narrow the FI gap between Hispanic and non-Hispanic households (P = 0.22). CONCLUSIONS: SNAP participation was associated with lower levels of FI among households with children, particularly for Black households. However, there was no significant association between SNAP participation and FI among Hispanic households with children.

RESUMEN

The rapid advancement of electronic communication technology has greatly aided human productivity and quality of life, but it has also resulted in significant electromagnetic pollution issues. Traditional metals and alloys are often used for electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding due to their excellent electrical conductivity. However, they have drawbacks such as being heavy, expensive, and having low corrosion resistance, which limits their application in electromagnetic shielding. Therefore, it is crucial to develop novel EMI shielding materials. Polymers, being highly flexible, corrosion-resistant, and possessing high specific strength, are frequently employed in electromagnetic shielding materials. In this review, we firstly introduce the basic theory of electromagnetic shielding. Then, we outline the processing methods and recent developments of polymer-based electromagnetic shielding composites, including uniform-, foam-, layered-, and segregated structures. Lastly, we present the challenges and prospects for the field, aiming to provide direction and inspiration for the study of polymer-based electromagnetic shielding composite materials.

Cisplatin is a first-line chemotherapeutic agent in the treatment of malignant tumors with remarkable clinical effects and low cost. However, the ototoxicity and neurotoxicity of cisplatin greatly limit its clinical application. This article reviews the possible pathways and molecular mechanisms of cisplatin trafficking from peripheral blood into the inner ear, the toxic response of cisplatin to inner ear cells, as well as the cascade reactions leading to cell death. Moreover, this article highlights the latest research progress in cisplatin resistance mechanism and cisplatin ototoxicity. Two effective protective mechanisms, anti-apoptosis and mitophagy activation, and their interaction in the inner ear are discussed. Additionally, the current clinical preventive measures and novel therapeutic agents for cisplatin ototoxicity are described. Finally, this article also forecasts the prospect of possible drug targets for mitigating cisplatin-induced ototoxicity. These include the use of antioxidants, inhibitors of transporter proteins, inhibitors of cellular pathways, combination drug delivery methods, and other mechanisms that have shown promise in preclinical studies. Further research is needed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of these approaches.

Near-infrared (NIR) photothermal therapy plays a critical role in the cancer treatment and diagnosis as a promising carcinoma treatment modalities nowadays. However, development of clinical application has been greatly limited due to the inefficient drug release and low tumor accumulation. Herein, we designed a NIR-light triggered indocyanine green (ICG)-based PCL core/P(MEO2MA-b-HMAM) shell nanocomposites (PPH@ICG) and evaluated their therapeutic effects in vitro and in vivo. The anticancer drug 5-fluorouracil (5Fu) and the photothermal agent ICG were loaded into a thermo-sensitive micelle (PPH@5Fu@ICG) by self-assembly. The nanoparticles formed were characterized using transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, and fluorescence spectra. The thermo-sensitive copolymer (PPH@5Fu@ICG) showed a great temperature-controlled drug release response with lower critical solution temperature. In vitro cellular uptake and TEM imaging proved that PPH@5Fu@ICG nanoparticles can home into the lysosomal compartments under NIR. Moreover, in gastric tumor-bearing nude mice, PPH@5Fu@ICG + NIR group exhibited excellent improvement in antitumor efficacy based on the NIR-triggered thermo-chemotherapy synergy, both in vitro and in vivo. In summary, the proposed strategy of synergistic photo-hyperthermia chemotherapy effectively reduced the 5Fu dose, toxic or side effect, which could serve as a secure and efficient approach for cancer theranostics.

OBJECTIVES: This study examined factors associated with the mental health of Medicare beneficiaries during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: The Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey COVID-19 Supplement administered in the Fall of 2020 of beneficiaries aged ≥65 years was analyzed (n = 6,173). A survey-weighted logistic model, adjusted for socio-demographics and comorbidities, was performed to examine factors (e.g., accessibility of medical/daily needs, financial security, and social connectivity) associated with stress/anxiety. RESULTS: Of Medicare beneficiaries, 40.8% reported feeling more stressed/anxious during the pandemic. Factors that were associated with this increased stress/anxiety include the inability to get home supplies (95% CI [3.4%, 16.5%]) or a doctor's appointment (95% CI [1.7%, 20.7%]), feeling less financially secure (95% CI [23.1%, 33.2%]) or socially connected (95% CI [19.1%, 25.6%]), and being female (95% CI [7.2%, 12.2%]), when compared with their respective counterparts. Non-Hispanic blacks were less likely to report feeling more stressed/anxious than non-Hispanic whites (95% CI [-19.9%, -9.0%]). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings highlight that beneficiaries' mental health was adversely influenced by the pandemic, particularly in those who felt financially insecure and socially disconnected. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: It is warranted to screen at risk beneficiaries for stress/anxiety during Medicare wellness visits and advocate for programs to reduce those risk factors.

OBJECTIVES: This study examined the associations of discrepancies between perceived and physiological fall risks with repeated falls. METHODS: We analyzed the 2016 Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey of 2,487 Medicare beneficiaries aged ≥ 65 years with ≥ 1 fall. The outcome variable was repeated falls (≥ 2 falls), the key independent variable was a categorical variable of discrepancies between perceived (fear of falling) and physiological fall risks (physiological limitations), assessed using multivariate logistic regression. RESULTS: Among Medicare beneficiaries with ≥ 1 fall, 25.1% had low fear of falling but high physiological fall risk (Low Fear-High Physiological), 9.4% had high fear of falling but low physiological fall risk (High Fear-Low Physiological), 23.5% had low fear of falling and low physiological fall risks (Low Fear-Low Physiological), and 42.0% had high fear of falling and high physiological fall risks (High Fear-High Physiological). Having High Fear-High Physiological was associated with repeated falls (OR = 2.14; p < .001) compared to Low Fear-Low Physiological. Having Low Fear-High Physiological and High Fear-LowPhysiological were not associated with repeated falls. CONCLUSIONS: Given that High Fear-High Physiological was associated with repeated falls and that many at-risk Medicare beneficiaries had High Fear-High Physiological, prevention efforts may consider targeting those most at-risk including Medicare beneficiaries with High Fear-High Physiological. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: Assessing both perceived and physiological fall risks is clinically relevant, given it may inform targeted interventions for different at-risk Medicare beneficiaries among clinicians and other stakeholders.

BACKGROUND: Cuproptosis has recently been considered a novel form of programmed cell death. To date, long-chain non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) crucial to the regulation of this process remain unelucidated. AIM: To identify lncRNAs linked to cuproptosis in order to estimate patients' prognoses for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). METHODS: Using RNA sequence data from The Cancer Genome Atlas Live Hepatocellular Carcinoma (TCGA-LIHC), a co-expression network of cuproptosis-related genes and lncRNAs was constructed. For HCC prognosis, we developed a cuproptosis-related lncRNA signature (CupRLSig) using univariate Cox, lasso, and multivariate Cox regression analyses. Kaplan-Meier analysis was used to compare overall survival among high- and low-risk groups stratified by median CupRLSig risk score. Furthermore, comparisons of functional annotation, immune infiltration, somatic mutation, tumor mutation burden (TMB), and pharmacologic options were made between high- and low-risk groups. RESULTS: Three hundred and forty-three patients with complete follow-up data were recruited in the analysis. Pearson correlation analysis identified 157 cuproptosis-related lncRNAs related to 14 cuproptosis genes. Next, we divided the TCGA-LIHC sample into a training set and a validation set. In univariate Cox regression analysis, 27 LncRNAs with prognostic value were identified in the training set. After lasso regression, the multivariate Cox regression model determined the identified risk equation as follows: Risk score = (0.2659 × PICSAR expression) + (0.4374 × FOXD2-AS1 expression) + (-0.3467 × AP001065.1 expression). The CupRLSig high-risk group was associated with poor overall survival (hazard ratio = 1.162, 95%CI = 1.063-1.270; P < 0.001) after the patients were divided into two groups depending upon their median risk score. Model accuracy was further supported by receiver operating characteristic and principal component analysis as well as the validation set. The area under the curve of 0.741 was found to be a better predictor of HCC prognosis as compared to other clinicopathological variables. Mutation analysis revealed that high-risk combinations with high TMB carried worse prognoses (median survival of 30 mo vs 102 mo of low-risk combinations with low TMB group). The low-risk group had more activated natural killer cells (NK cells, P = 0.032 by Wilcoxon rank sum test) and fewer regulatory T cells (Tregs, P = 0.021) infiltration than the high-risk group. This finding could explain why the low-risk group has a better prognosis. Interestingly, when checkpoint gene expression (CD276, CTLA-4, and PDCD-1) and tumor immune dysfunction and rejection (TIDE) scores are considered, high-risk patients may respond better to immunotherapy. Finally, most drugs commonly used in preclinical and clinical systemic therapy for HCC, such as 5-fluorouracil, gemcitabine, paclitaxel, imatinib, sunitinib, rapamycin, and XL-184 (cabozantinib), were found to be more efficacious in the low-risk group; erlotinib, an exception, was more efficacious in the high-risk group. CONCLUSION: The lncRNA signature, CupRLSig, constructed in this study is valuable in prognostic estimation of HCC. Importantly, CupRLSig also predicts the level of immune infiltration and potential efficacy of tumor immunotherapy.

INTRODUCTION: Physical inactivity has become a public health issue as it can trigger many chronic diseases. Studies have found that an individual's social networks (SNs) influence their engagement in physical activity (PA). However, it remains unclear how the influence varies between different sociodemographic groups. This study examined the associations between the SN structures and the PA of young adults across sociodemographic groups. METHOD: Data on 14,595 young adults aged 24-32 were obtained from Wave IV of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health. Latent class analysis was conducted to identify heterogeneous subgroups of respondents with respect to their engagement in PA and SN structures were measured in terms of the relationship quality, contact frequency, network size, and spatial accessibility. Logistic regression and chi-square tests were used to further test the relationships between PA and SNs as well as the sociodemographic factors. RESULTS: SNs were found to have a significant influence on PA. Relationship quality was identified as the most important feature of an individual's SN, followed by network size, contact frequency, and accessibility. The effects of SNs on PA varied with the individuals' gender, ethnicity, income, and educational attainment. For example, male participants tended to be physically active if they had frequent connections with their neighbors, while the engagement in PA of the female participants was strongly related to the frequency of their contact with their children. CONCLUSIONS: This research has important implications for practitioners as it suggests that PA intervention programs should be designed to target specific population groups.

Background: Accumulating evidence suggests that cellular senescence promotes tumor formation and that long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) expression predicts tumor prognosis. However, senescence-related variables, particularly lncRNAs, are still largely unknown. Therefore, the present study developed a novel senescence-associated lncRNA signature to predict colorectal cancer (CRC) prognosis. Methods: A co-expression network of senescence-associated mRNAs and lncRNAs was built using RNA-sequence data from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). By using the prognosis outcomes data of overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) from TCGA, we constructed a prognostic senescence-associated lncRNA signature (SenALSig). The OS and DFS were compared between the low- and high- risk groups defined by SenALSig. A single-sample gene set enrichment analysis (ssGSEA) and CIBERSORT algorithm were used to investigate the relationship between the predictive signature and immune status. Finally, the relationship between SenALSig and drug treatment options was investigated. An independent CRC cohort and three CRC cell lines were recruited to perform real-time quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) analysis to validate the results discovered in silico. Results: A prognostic risk model consisting of six senescence-associated lncRNAs was constructed, including SNHG16, AL590483.1, ZEB1-AS1, AC107375.1, AC068580.3, and AC147067.1. High-risk scores according to the SenALSig were significantly associated with poor OS (hazard ratio =1.218, 95% confidence interval: 1.140-1.301; P<0.001). The model's accuracy was further supported by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves (the area under the curve is 0.714) and a principal component analysis (PCA). In univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses, SenALSig was further found to be a prognostic factor independent of other clinical factors. Furthermore, we discovered that immune checkpoint expression and response to chemotherapy and targeted therapy differed significantly between the SenALSig-stratified high- and low-risk groups. Finally, the qPCR results revealed that the expression levels of the six senescence-associated lncRNAs differed significantly between tumor and normal tissues and between the CRC cell lines and a normal human colon mucosal epithelial cell line. Conclusions: SenALSig can better predict survival and risk in CRC patients, as well as help develop new anti-cancer treatment strategies for CRC.

RESUMEN

Since the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs) were adopted by the UN Human Rights Council in 2011, they have diffused into policy frameworks, laws, and regulations across the globe. This special issue seeks to advance the interdisciplinary field of human rights research by examining key elements of the emerging transnational regime for the regulation of business and human rights. In seven original contributions, scholars from political science, law, accounting, and philosophy critically reflect on the theoretical foundations of the UNGPs, they analyze the effectiveness of implementation mechanisms and current regulatory practice, and they advance proposals for the future development of the business and human rights regime. In this introduction, we prepare the ground for these analyses, proceeding in three steps. Firstly, we argue that the adoption of the UNGPs has triggered a norm cascade which requires a distinctive, empirically oriented research agenda focusing on the scope, governance, and effectiveness of corporate human rights accountability norms and instruments. Secondly, we explain how the articles in this special issue contribute to that research agenda by addressing these themes. Thirdly, we provide an overview of the individual contributions and point out avenues for future research.

Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC), the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the world, has a high mortality rate. In recent decades, long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been proven to exert an important effect on CRC growth. However, the CTBP1-AS2 expression and function in CRC are largely unknown. Materials and Methods: The CTBP1-AS2 and miR-93-5p expression in CRC and para-cancerous tissues was detected by reverse transcription-PCR. The expression of CTBP1-AS2, miR-93-5p and the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-ß)/small mothers against decapentaplegic 2/3 (SMAD2/3) pathway was selectively regulated to study the correlation between CTBP1-AS2 expression and prognosis of patients with CRC. CRC cell proliferation, apoptosis, and invasion were measured in vivo and in vitro. In addition, bioinformatics was applied to explore the targeting relationship between CTBP1-AS2 and miR-93-5p. The targeting binding sites between CTBP1-AS2 and miR-93-5p, as well as between miR-93-5p and TGF-ß, were verified by the dual-luciferase reporter assay and the RNA immunoprecipitation experiment. Results: Compared with normal para-cancerous tissues, CTBP1-AS2 was considerably overexpressed in CRC tissues and was closely associated with worse survival of patients with CRC. Functionally, gain and loss in experiments illustrated that CTBP1-AS2 accelerated CRC cell proliferation and invasion and inhibited cell apoptosis. Mechanistically, CTBP1-AS2 regulated the malignant phenotype of tumor cells through the TGF-ß/SMAD2/3 pathway. Moreover, miR-93-5p, as an endogenous competitive RNA of CTBP1-AS2, attenuated the oncogenic effects mediated by CTBP1-AS2. Conclusion: CTBP1-AS2 promotes the TGF-ß/SMAD2/3 pathway activation by inhibiting miR-93-5p, thereby accelerating CRC development.

ABSTRACT: Microbiota has been suggested to play a role in patients with intestinal and cutaneous diseases. However, the profiling of perianal eczema microbiota has not been described. We have explored the general profile and possible differences between acute and chronic perianal eczema. A total of 101 acute perianal eczema (APE) and 156 chronic perianal eczema (CPE) patients were enrolled in this study and the perianal microbiota was profiled via Illumina sequencing of the 16S rRNA V4 region.The microbial α-diversity and structure are similar in APE and CPE patients; however, the perianal microbiota of the APE patients had a higher content of Staphylococcus (22.2%, P < .01) than that of CPE patients. Top10 genera accounting for more than 60% (68.81% for APE and 65.47% for CPE) of the whole microbiota, including Prevotella, Streptococcus, and Bifidobacterium, show an upregulation trend in the case of APE without reaching statistically significant differences. This study compared the microbiota profiles of acute and chronic perianal eczema. Our results suggest that the microbiota of acute perianal eczema patients is enriched in Staphylococcus compared with that in the chronic group. Our findings provide data for further studies.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness of strain elastography (SE), Virtual Touch tissue imaging and quantification (VTIQ; Siemens Medical Solutions, Mountain View, CA) and their combination (SE + VTIQ) in distinguishing benign from malignant American College of Radiology Thyroid Imaging Reporting and Data System category 4 nodules (TR4) to reduce unnecessary biopsy. METHODS: In this retrospective study, 985 thyroid nodules from 920 patients were initially enrolled and examined with conventional ultrasound, SE, and VTIQ. The sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of SE, VTIQ, and SE + VTIQ were calculated respectively. An area under the receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was applied to evaluate the diagnostic efficiency of SE, VTIQ, and SE + VTIQ in the differentiation of benign and malignant TR4 nodules. RESULTS: A total of 864 patients with 922 TR4 nodules were enrolled ultimately, as 63 thyroid nodules from 56 patients were excluded because they did not meet the inclusion criteria of this study. The sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of SE, VTIQ, and SE + VTIQ were 72.4% versus 86.3% versus 82.1%, 77.7% versus 80.5% versus 83.5%, 70.6% versus 76.1% versus 80.2%, 73.4% versus 76.3% versus 83.5%, and 75.5% versus 79.7% versus 82.8%, respectively. The areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve for the diagnosis of TR4 nodules by SE, VTIQ, and SE + VTIQ were 0.751, 0.817, and 0.844. CONCLUSIONS: In spite of a slight decrease in the sensitivity, the application of combining SE and VTIQ techniques can improve the specificity and accuracy of TR4 nodule diagnosis, which can help reduce unnecessary biopsies of TR4 nodules.

SRY-box transcription factors (SOXs) are effective inducers for the formation of stem-like phenotypes. As a member of SOX family, SOX9 (SRY-box transcription factor 9) has been reported to be highly expressed and exert oncogenic functions in multiple human cancers. In this study, we hypothesized that SOX9 could regulate the function of cancer stem/initiating cells (CSCs) to further facilitate the progression of colorectal cancer (CRC). Then, stable transfection of shRNAs was used to silence indicated genes. Loss-of-function experiments were conducted to demonstrate the in vitro function of CRC cells. In vivo study was conducted to determine the changes in tumorigenesis and metastasis in vivo. Bioinformatics analyses and mechanistic experiments were employed to explore the downstream molecules. Presently, GEPIA data indicated that SOX9 was upregulated in 275 COAD (colon adenocarcinoma) samples relative to 349 normal tissues. Besides, we also proved the upregulation of SOX9 in CRC cell lines (HCT15, SW480, SW1116, and HT-29) compared to normal NCM-460 cells. Silencing of SOX9 suppressed cell growth, stemness, migration, and invasion. Mechanistically, SOX9 activated the transcription of lncRNA phenylalanyl-tRNA synthetase subunit alpha antisense RNA 1 (FARSA-AS1), while FARSA-AS1 elevated SOX9 in turn by absorbing miR-18b-5p and augmented FARSA via sequestering miR-28-5p. Furthermore, loss of FARSA-AS1 hindered malignant phenotypes in vitro and blocked tumor growth and metastasis in vivo. Notably, we testified that FARSA-AS1 aggravated the malignancy in CRC by enhancing SOX9 and FARSA. Our study unveiled a mechanism of SOX9-FARSA-AS1-SOX9/FARSA loop in CRC, which provides some clews of promising targets for CRC.

In this article, a novel method to synthesize graphene quantum dots was developed via thermal treatment of crude graphite oxide (GO) in a dry and alkaline condition to cut the crude GO sheets into small graphene quantum dots (named as aGQDs). The aGQDs are nano-scale reduced graphene oxide pieces with the sizes around 5-10 nm. The aGQDs could disperse in water for their richment of oxygen-containing groups. The fluorescence properties were carefully investigated. The aGQDS aqueous solution shows a bright yellow-green fluorescence under the UV illumination. Besides, the uranyl ions show a strong fluorescence quenching effect on the a aGQD aqueous solution even at a low concentration (~10-7 M) compared with other common ions in natural water-body, which makes that these aGQDs could be applied as a chemosensor for detection of uranyl ions with good sensitivity and selectivity.
