RESUMEN

In recent years, silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) have been used as positive electrode material for zinc/silver batteries, and the silver oxides formed during the charging process determine the discharge performance of batteries. Therefore, it is important to study the oxidation behavior of Ag NPs in alkaline solution. Single-nanoparticle collision is an important tool for analyzing oxidation behavior of individual nanoparticles. Based on thermodynamic information from collision events, it is known that oxidation products are potential-dependent and size-dependent. Based on dynamic information, including collisional peak shapes and duration time, it was observed that the Ag NP collision oxidation process changed from stepwise oxidation to direct oxidation as the potential increased or size decreased. This work provides guidance for application of Ag NPs in zinc/silver batteries and proposed a strategy for oxidation behavior of individual NP that could be tracked in situ through an all-encompassing view of thermodynamic and dynamic information.

AIM: Our aim was to explore the feasibility of using radiomics data derived from intratumoral and peritumoral edema on fat-suppressed T2-weighted imaging (T2 FS) to distinguish triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) from non-triple-negative breast cancer (non-TNBC). METHODS: This retrospective study enrolled 174 breast cancer patients. According to the MRI examination time, patients before 2021 were divided into training (n = 119) or internal test (n = 30) cohorts at a ratio of 8:2. Patients from 2022 were included in the external test cohort (n = 25). Four regions of interest for each lesion were defined: intratumoral regions, peritumoral edema regions, regions with a combination of intratumoral and peritumoral edema, and regions with a combination of intratumoral and 5-mm peritumoral. Four radiomic signatures were built using the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) method after selecting features. Furthermore, a radio mic-radiological model was constructed using a combination of intratumoral and peritumoral edema regions along with clinical-radiologic features. Area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) calculations, decision curve analysis, and calibration curve analysis were performed to assess the performance of each model. RESULTS: The radiomic-radiological model showed the highest AUC values of 0.906 (0.788-1.000) and 82.5 (0.622-0.947) in both the internal and external test sets, respectively. The radiology-radiomic model exhibited excellent predictive performance, as evidenced by the calibration curves and decision curve analysis. CONCLUSION: The ensemble model based on T2 FS-based radiomic features of intratumoral and peritumoral edema, along with radiological factors, performed better in distinguishing TNBC from non-TNBC than a single model. We explored the possibility of developing explainable models to support the clinical decision-making process.

We proposed a deep learning approach to classify various error types in daily VMAT treatment of head and neck cancer patients based on EPID dosimetry, which could provide additional information to support clinical decisions for adaptive planning. 146 arcs from 42 head and neck patients were analyzed. Anatomical changes and setup errors were simulated in 17,820 EPID images of 99 arcs obtained from 30 patients using in-house software for model training, validation, and testing. Subsequently, 141 clinical EPID images from 47 arcs belonging to the remaining 12 patients were utilized for clinical testing. The hierarchical convolutional neural network (HCNN) model was trained to classify error types and magnitudes using EPID dose difference maps. Gamma analysis with 3%/2 mm (dose difference/distance to agreement) criteria was also performed. The F1 score, a combination of precision and recall, was utilized to evaluate the performance of the HCNN model and gamma analysis. The adaptive fractioned doses were calculated to verify the HCNN classification results. For error type identification, the overall F1 score of the HCNN model was 0.99 and 0.91 for primary type and subtype identification, respectively. For error magnitude identification, the overall F1 score in the simulation dataset was 0.96 and 0.70 for the HCNN model and gamma analysis, respectively; while the overall F1 score in the clinical dataset was 0.79 and 0.20 for the HCNN model and gamma analysis, respectively. The HCNN model-based EPID dosimetry can identify changes in patient transmission doses and distinguish the treatment error category, which could potentially provide information for head and neck cancer treatment adaption.

Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and interleukin-4 (IL-4) play important roles in inducing M1 and M2 macrophage polarization. Studies have shown that LPS can promote the polarization of macrophages to M1-type and produce many pro-inflammatory cytokines, while IL-4 can promote the polarization of macrophages to M2-type and produce many anti-inflammatory cytokines. Moreover, Connexin 43 (Cx43) is widely expressed in macrophages and has various regulatory functions. However, whether Cx43 is involved in the regulation of macrophage M1/M2 polarization has not been fully studied. This study examined the role of Cx43 and M2 polarization markers using Western blot, immunofluorescence, flow cytometry. Cx43 overexpression was induced using Cx43 overexpressing lentivirus. The statistical software SPSS 20.0 (IBM Corp.) and GraphPad Prism 8.0 (GraphPad Software, La Jolla, CA, United States) were used to analyze the results. P values < .05 were considered to indicate statistically significant differences. Our results showed that LPS promotes the polarization of macrophages to M1-type, which is accompanied by an increase in Cx43 expression from 0 to 24 hours. Moreover, the application of the Cx43-specific blockers Gap19 and Gap26 reduces the expression of macrophage M1-type polarization markers. Thus, the expression of Cx43 increases first, and then, due to the initiation of intracellular autophagy during LPS-induced macrophage M1 polarization. Cx43 is degraded and the expression of Cx43 decreases from 24 hours to 48 hours. IL-4 decreases the expression of Cx43 from 24 hours to 48 hours and promotes the transformation of macrophages to M2-type. The application of Cx43 overexpression lentivirus leads to a reduction in the expression of M2 polarization markers. IL-4-induced M2 polarization of macrophages inhibits cell autophagy, reducing Cx43 degradation and leading to an increase in Cx43 from 24 hours to 48 hours. Thus, Cx43 expression in M2-type polarization experiences a reduction at first and then an increase from 24 hours to 48 hours. The direction of macrophage polarization can be controlled by regulating the expression of Cx43, thus providing a theoretical basis for treating atherosclerosis, tumors, and other diseases associated with macrophage polarization.

RESUMEN

Bacterial enteritis has a substantial role in contributing to a large portion of the global disease burden and serves as a major cause of newborn mortality. Despite advancements gained from current animal and cell models in improving our understanding of pathogens, their widespread application is hindered by apparent drawbacks. Therefore, more precise models are imperatively required to develop more accurate studies on host-pathogen interactions and drug discovery. Since the emergence of intestinal organoids, massive studies utilizing organoids have been conducted to study the pathogenesis of bacterial enteritis, revealing new mechanisms and validating established ones. In this review, we focus on the advancements of several bacterial pathogenesis mechanisms observed in intestinal organoid/enteroid models, exploring the host response and bacterial effectors during the infection process. Finally, we address the features that warrant additional investigation or could be enhanced in existing organoid models in order to guide future research endeavors.

The algal-bacterial wastewater treatment process has been proven to be highly efficient in removing nutrients and recovering nitrogen (N). However, the recovery of the valuable N-rich biopolymer, cyanophycin, remains limited. This research explored the synthesis mechanism and recovery potential of cyanophycin within two algal-bacterial symbiotic reactors. The findings reveal that the synergy between algae and bacteria enhances the removal of N and phosphorus. The crude contents of cyanophycin in the algal-bacterial consortia reached 115 and 124 mg/g of mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS), respectively, showing an increase of 11.7 %-20.4 % (p < 0.001) compared with conventional activated sludge. Among the 170 metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) analyzed, 50 were capable of synthesizing cyanophycin, indicating that cyanophycin producers are common in algal-bacterial systems. The compositions of cyanophycin producers in the two algal-bacterial reactors were affected by different lighting initiation time. The study identified two intracellular synthesis pathways for cyanophycin. Approximately 36 MAGs can synthesize cyanophycin de novo using ammonium and glucose, while the remaining 14 MAGs require exogenous arginine for production. Notably, several MAGs with high abundance are capable of assimilating both nitrate and ammonium into cyanophycin, demonstrating a robust N utilization capability. This research also marks the first identification of potential horizontal gene transfer of the cyanophycin synthase encoding gene (cphA) within the wastewater microbial community. This suggests that the spread of cphA could expand the population of cyanophycin producers. The study offers new insights into recycling the high-value N-rich biopolymer cyanophycin, contributing to the advancement of wastewater resource utilization.

BACKGROUND: The relationship among body mass index (BMI), setup error and radiation pneumonitis is not clearly illustrated. OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to investigate the role of BMI in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients' radiation treatment, focusing on its relationship with setup error of patient positioning, the dosimetric parameters of intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and the incidence of radiation pneumonitis. METHODS: This prospective observational study included 523 cases of NSCLC patients during 2020-2022. Patients were divided into different groups by different BMI. The setup error was obtained by cone beam CT (CBCT) at three positions, lateral (LAT), longitudinal (LNG) and vertical (VRT). IMRT dosimetric parameters of V5, V20, and mean dose were collected. RESULTS: Patients with BMI ≥28 kg/m2 showed significantly higher absolute values of LAT, LNG and VRT, higher V5, V20, mean dose, as well as higher total incidence of radiation pneumonitis and grade III radiation pneumonitis compared with patients with BMI <24 kg/m2 or 24-28 kg/m2. Spearman's analysis demonstrated that the absolute values of LAT, LNG and VRT were positively correlated with BMI, and positive correlation existed among BMI, dosimetric parameters and setup errors. ROC curves showed that LAT in setup errors and V5 in dosimetric parameters had the best diagnostic value for prediction of radiation pneumonitis. Only BMI, LAT, V5 and V20 were the independent risk factors for radiation pneumonitis. CONCLUSIONS: Setup error caused by higher BMI might be associated with the dosimetric parameters, as well as the incidence of radiation pneumonitis in NSCLC patients.

This study introduces a time-domain-based phase compensation method to address decoherence effects in optical heterodyne detection, which is critical for remote sensing and distance imaging. The numerical simulations demonstrate a substantial reduction in localization bias (6.56-2.85) and an increased probability of bias values below 2 (21.6%-70.5%). The experiments show significant improvement in whiteboard distance imaging accuracy at 10 m from the detector, with 91.7% of the data falling within 10-12 m, compared to a mere 2.3% accuracy before compensation. The method effectively enhances intensity image quality, mitigates decoherence phenomena, and improves detection accuracy and reliability without additional hardware.

Background: The original treatment may aggravate when hemodialysis (HD) patients have nontraumatic subdural hematoma (NSDH). End-stage kidney disease patients are at increased risk for NSDH, but its risk factors and outcomes are not sufficiently explored at present. Methods: Electronic databases, including PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science were searched by using various combinations of the keywords "Hemodialysis," "Renal Insufficiency," "Extracorporeal Dialysis," "Subdural Hematoma," "Subdural Hemorrhage," "Subdural Hematomas," and "Subdural Hemorrhages" in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines. Sixteen papers were selected. Relevant patient data were extracted, aggregated, and analyzed. Results: A total of 74 patients were analyzed, including 37 male, 26 female, and 11 with no gender data, with a mean age of 56 years (range, 16-81 years). There were 43 patients with hypertension, 36 patients with diabetes, 16 patients who used oral anticoagulants before dialysis, and 10 patients with atrial fibrillation. The diagnosis of subdural hematoma (SDH) was made by computed tomography (CT) (n = 51), carotid arteriography (n = 7), surgical exploration (n = 3), and autopsy (n = 2). Forty cases underwent surgical treatment, including craniotomy and burr hole (or twist drill) drainage. The 1 year mortality rate of NSDH was 45.9%. The mortality rate after conservative treatment (61.8%) was higher than that after surgical intervention (32.5%). The mortality rate of NSDH in dialysis patients with atrial fibrillation and in those who used oral anticoagulants before hemodialysis (HD) was 90 and 81%, respectively. Conclusion: NSDH is rare in HD, and mortality is high if NSDH occurs in dialysis patients. Surgical intervention reduces the mortality from NSDH in patients on HD (p < 0.02). Patients with atrial fibrillation and those who were taking oral anticoagulants before dialysis have a higher NSDH mortality (p < 0.01).

BACKGROUND: Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scanning is used for patient setup in image-guided radiotherapy. However, its inaccurate CT numbers limit its applicability in dose calculation and treatment planning. PURPOSE: This study compares four deep learning methods for generating synthetic CT (sCT) to determine which method is more appropriate and offers potential for further clinical exploration in adaptive proton therapy for nasopharynx cancer. METHODS: CBCTs and deformed planning CT (dCT) from 75 patients (60/5/10 for training, validation and testing) were used to compare cycle-consistent Generative Adversarial Network (cycleGAN), Unet, Unet+cycleGAN and conditionalGenerative Adversarial Network (cGAN) for sCT generation. The sCT images generated by each method were evaluated against dCT images using mean absolute error (MAE), structural similarity (SSIM), peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR), spatial non-uniformity (SNU) and radial averaging in the frequency domain. In addition, dosimetric accuracy was assessed through gamma analysis, differences in water equivalent thickness (WET), and dose-volume histogram metrics. RESULTS: The cGAN model has demonstrated optimal performance in the four models across various indicators. In terms of image quality under global condition, the average MAE has been reduced to 16.39HU, SSIM has increased to 95.24%, and PSNR has increased to 28.98. Regarding dosimetric accuracy, the gamma passing rate (2%/2 mm) has reached 99.02%, and the WET difference is only 1.28 mm. The D95 value of CTVs coverage and Dmax value of spinal cord, brainstem show no significant differences between dCT and sCT generated by cGAN model. CONCLUSIONS: The cGAN model has been shown to be a more suitable approach for generating sCT using CBCT, considering its characteristics and concepts. The resulting sCT has the potential for application in adaptive proton therapy.

Intracranial chondrosarcoma is a rare tumor with limited reports. We reviewed the clinical outcomes, imaging findings, and pathological characteristics at three centers to improve the diagnosis and treatment of intracranial chondrosarcoma. We retrospectively analyzed 26 patients with intracranial chondrosarcoma who had undergone surgical treatment at Tangdu Hospital of Air Force Military Medical University, Mianyang Central Hospital, and Nanchong Central Hospital from January 2010 to July 2022. Clinical manifestations, imaging features, surgical treatment, prognosis, and overall survival (OS) were analyzed. All 26 chondrosarcomas were located at the skull base. Gross total resection (GTR), subtotal resection (STR), and partial resection (PR) were performed in 14, 10, and 2 cases, respectively. Four cases underwent endoscopic transnasal surgery, while the remaining cases underwent craniotomy. The clinical symptoms were evaluated 1 week after surgery, and 15 cases were relieved to varying degrees. Postoperative complications included pulmonary infection, subcutaneous hydrops, dysphagia and choking, facial numbness, abducens paralysis, and intracranial infection (ICI). Fifteen cases received postoperative adjuvant radiotherapy. Seven cases showed recurrence: two with PR, four with STR, and one with GTR. Six cases received reoperation or radiotherapy after tumor progression, and one untreated patient died 5 months after tumor recurrence. The extent of tumor resection (HR 21.74, 95% CI 1.25-376.6, P = 0.03) and pathological grading (HR 131.99, 95% CI 4.05-4300.5, P = 0.006) were associated with improved OS. We presented our experience in the treatment of intracranial chondrosarcoma at three centers in the past 12 years. Intracranial chondrosarcoma lacked typical imaging features and are difficult to differentiate from other skull base lesions. Maximum extent of tumor resection with minimal injury to neurological function remains the most important treatment strategy. The extent of surgical resection and pathological grading were found to be predictors for OS.

Algal-bacterial symbiosis systems have emerged as sustainable methods for the treatment of new pollutants and the recovery of resources. However, the bio-refinery of biomass derived from microalgae is inefficient and expensive. In order to simultaneously degrade antibiotic and recover resources efficiently, two algal-bacterial symbiosis systems were constructed using Pseudomonas aeruginosa (alginate overproduction) and Bacillus subtilis (poly-γ-glutamic acid overproduction) with amoxicillin-degrading-microalga Prototheca zopfii W1. The optimal conditions for W1 to degrade amoxicillin are 35 °C, pH 7, and 180 rpm. In the presence of 5-50 mg/L of amoxicillin, W1-P. aeruginosa and W1-B. subtilis exhibit higher amoxicillin degradation and produce more extracellular polymers than W1 or bacteria alone. The metabolomic analysis demonstrates that the algal-bacterial symbiosis enhances the tolerance of W1 to amoxicillin by altering carbohydrate metabolism and promotes the production of biopolymers by upregulating the precursors synthesis. Moreover, the removal of amoxicillin (10 mg/L) from livestock effluent by W1-P. aeruginosa and W1-B. subtilis is greater than 90 % in 3 days, and the maximum yields of alginate and poly-γ-glutamate are 446.1 and 254.3 mg/g dry cell weight, respectively. These outcomes provide theoretical support for the application of algal-bacterial symbiosis systems to treatment of amoxicillin wastewater and efficient production of biopolymers.

BACKGROUND: Type 2 Diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has become a major lifestyle disease endangering human health worldwide. Patients with T2DM face varying degrees of loneliness, which adversely affects their family and the larger society. This study investigates the serial multiple mediating roles of depression and self-perceived burden between family function and loneliness in the T2DM population of China. METHODS: In total, 260 T2DM patients were included. They rated themselves based on UCLA Loneliness Scale, Self-Rating Depression Scale, Self-Rating Anxiety Scale, Family Care Index, and Self-Perceived Burden Scale. Pearson and Spearman correlation analyses were conducted to clarify the association among variables. The SPSS macro-PROCESS program was used for a series of multiple mediation analyses. RESULTS: Family function, depression, self-perceived burden, and loneliness were significantly correlated (P < 0.01). Family function not only has a direct negative impact (effect = -2.809; SE = 0.213; 95%CI: LL = -3.228, UL = -2.390) on loneliness, but also has an indirect impact on loneliness through the independent mediating role of depression (effect = -0.862; SE = 0.165; 95%CI: LL = -1.202, UL = -0.567) and self-perceived burden (effect = -0.288; SE = 0.107; 95%CI: LL = -0.525, UL = -0.114) and the chain mediating role of depression and self-perceived burden (effect = -0.202; SE = 0.066; 95%CI: LL = -0.342, UL = -0.088). CONCLUSIONS: Diversified interventions aimed at improving family function of T2DM patients would help in reducing the level of depression and self-perceived burden, and ultimately reducing loneliness.

Polysaccharides, being a natural, active, and biodegradable polymer, have garnered significant attention due to their exceptional properties. These properties make them ideal for creating multifunctional hydrogels that can be used as wound dressings for skin injuries. Polysaccharide hydrogel has the ability to both simulate the natural extracellular matrix, promote cell proliferation, and provide a suitable environment for wound healing while protecting it from bacterial invasion. Polysaccharide hydrogels offer a promising solution for repairing damaged skin. This review provides an overview of the mechanisms involved in skin damage repair and emphasizes the potential of polysaccharide hydrogels in this regard. For different skin injuries, polysaccharide hydrogels can play a role in promoting wound healing. However, we still need to conduct more research on polysaccharide hydrogels to provide more possibilities for skin damage repair.

Background: Choroid plexus papilloma (CPP) is rare and even rarer in infants and young children, and it usually occurs in the ventricles. Due to the physical peculiarities of infants, tumor removal by microscopic or endoscopic surgery alone is difficult. Case Presentation: A 3-month-old patient was found to have an abnormally enlarged head circumference for 7 days. Cranial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examination revealed a lesion in the third ventricle. The patient underwent combined microscopic and endoscopic "chopstick" technique to remove the tumor. He recovered well after the surgery. Postoperative pathological examination revealed CPP. Postoperative MRI suggested total resection of the tumor. Follow-up for 1 month showed no recurrence or distant metastasis. The mechanism of antibiotic resistance (AR) development in an activated sludge system under tetracycline (TC) pressure was discussed and analyzed. According to the variation of macro-factors, including TC, COD, TN, TP, NH3-N, pH, heavy metals, and reactor settings, the tet genes respond accordingly. Consequently, the enrichment sites of tet genes form an invisible AR selection zone, where AR microorganisms thrive, gather, reproduce, and spread. The efflux pump genes tetA and tetB prefer anaerobic environment, while ribosome protective protein genes tetM, tetO, tetQ, tetT, and tetW were more concentrated in aerobic situations. As a corresponding micro-effect, different types of tet genes selected the corresponding dominant bacteria such as Thauera and Arthrobacter, suggesting the intrinsic relationship between tet genes and potential hosts. In summary, the macro-response and micro-effect of tet genes constitute an interactive mechanism with tet genes as the core, which is the crucial cause for the continuous development of AR. This study provides an executable strategy to control the development of AR in actual wastewater treatment plants from the perspective of macro-factors and micro-effects.

The environmental behavior of emerging contaminants of microplastics (MPs), antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the leachate activated sludge system has been monitored and analyzed comprehensively. The results suggested that MPs could effectively alter the migration trajectory of tetracycline resistance genes (tet genes) in the leachate activated sludge system under intermittent and continuous influent conditions. After adding MPs, the total average abundance of tet genes in leachate increased from 0.74 ± 0.07 to 0.78 ± 0.07 (log10tet genes/log10 16S rRNA) and that in sludge increased from 0.65 ± 0.08 to 0.70 ± 0.06 (log10tet genes/log10 16S rRNA). Except for tetA, the abundance of tetB, tetO, tetM and tetQ on MPs increased with increasing TC concentration under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. MPs not only significantly affect the abundance level and migration trajectory of ARGs in the leachate activated sludge system, but also remarkably improve the level of heavy metals in the ambient environment, indirectly promoting the selective effect of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and promoting the development of antibiotic resistance (AR). In addition, MPs changed their physicochemical properties and released hazardous substances with aging to force tet genes to migrate from the leachate activated sludge system to the MPs, making AR more difficult to eliminate and persisted in wastewater treatment plants. Meanwhile, microorganisms played a driving role, making MPs serve as a niche for ARGs and ARB colonization. The co-occurrence network analysis indicated the specific distribution pattern of tet genes and microorganisms in different media, and the potential host was speculated. This study improves the understanding of the environmental behavior of emerging contaminants in leachate activated sludge system and lays a theoretical for protecting the ecological environment.

High tibial osteotomy (HTO) is used as an alternative to total knee arthroplasty in young patients with knee osteoarthritis. In the conventional HTO, if the distraction distance is large, the osteotomy section will be significantly separated, forming a large bone defect gap, which may lead to delayed healing or even nonunion. We treated a series of 10 patients with medial knee osteoarthritis by a novel M-shaped high tibial osteotomy. This helped to improve greater contact of cortical sections and rapid healing of the osteotomy break. Over a mean follow-up period of 8.5 months (range, 6.0-12.0 months), all patients achieved bone union. None of the patients showed complications such as nonunion or infection. The novel M-shaped HTO procedure can reduce the probability of delayed union/nonunion and avoid the complications associated with bone grafting. Hence, this technique may be an effective alternative for the HTO.

Organoids have been developed in the last decade as a new research tool to simulate organ cell biology and disease. Compared to traditional 2D cell lines and animal models, experimental data based on esophageal organoids are more reliable. In recent years, esophageal organoids derived from multiple cell sources have been established, and relatively mature culture protocols have been developed. Esophageal inflammation and cancer are two directions of esophageal organoid modeling, and organoid models of esophageal adenocarcinoma, esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, and eosinophilic esophagitis have been established. The properties of esophageal organoids, which mimic the real esophagus, contribute to research in drug screening and regenerative medicine. The combination of organoids with other technologies, such as organ chips and xenografts, can complement the deficiencies of organoids and create entirely new research models that are more advantageous for cancer research. In this review, we will summarize the development of tumor and non-tumor esophageal organoids, the current application of esophageal organoids in disease modeling, regenerative medicine, and drug screening. We will also discuss the future prospects of esophageal organoids.
