With the continuous exploitation of petroleum resources, the distribution and displacement of residual oils have become key issues in enhancing oil recovery. In a reservoir, there are various forms of residual oils caused by the capillary force, viscous force, and some other hydrodynamic effects, which lead to the Jamin effect, and they restrict the oil displacement process. In this study, the morphologies of oil droplets in a capillary tube laden with water and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) solutions are experimentally investigated. The pinning behavior of the oil droplet is observed in the waterflood with a lower velocity, while depinning and rupturing behaviors occur at a higher velocity. Hereto, we build a mechanics model to analyze the evolution of the Jamin effect in a capillary tube with varying cross sections. Using this theoretical model, we obtain the two critical velocities for the depinning and rupture of the oil droplet, which agree with the experimental results. Moreover, we find that oil droplets can more easily pass through the entire capillary tube in SDS solutions compared with water. The time required for oil droplets to pass through the pore throat becomes shorter with the increase of SDS concentration. Therefore, a theoretical model is established to determine the total pressure difference and the minimum applied pressure difference. These findings are beneficial to obtain a deep insight into the detailed oil displacement and achieve a higher oil recovery rate.

As an unconventional reservoir sedimentary rock, shale contains a series of layers and various microstructures that lead to complex mechanical properties, such as the anisotropy of stiffness and strength. This study is directed towards the anisotropy caused by the microstructures of the shale, employing the 2D particle flow code (PFC2D) to explore stiffness, strength, failure mode, and micro-crack evolution. More realistic microstructures and the calibration of microscopic parameters of the shale are reasonably considered through the computed tomography (CT) images and mineral analysis. The corresponding numerical simulation results are fully compared with the experimental results. In what follows, the sensitivity analysis is conducted on the key microscopic parameters and microstructure characteristics in numerical samples with laminated characteristics. The results show that the influence of microscopic parameters of the parallel bonding model on macroscopic parameters is related to the layering angle and the face type, and the microstructures and initial cracks of numerical samples can considerably affect the macroscopic mechanical behaviors of the laminated samples. Next, the effect of confining pressure on the mechanical properties of layered shale is also discussed based on the numerical results. These findings highlight the potential of this approach for applications in micro-scaled models and calibration of microscopic parameters to probe mechanical behaviors of the laminated rock.

OBJECTIVE: There is poor understanding on health care utilization, productivity losses, and burden of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) in multiethnic Asian populations. Part of this research gap stems from the limited epidemiological data on neglect, emotional abuse, bullying, and dysfunctional home environments. This study estimated health care utilization, productivity losses, and burden of ACEs (at least one exposure and multiple exposures) in Singapore. METHOD: A total of 4,441 adult residents were recruited via door-to-door surveys in a nationally representative study in Singapore. All participants were assessed for ACEs, health care utilization, productivity losses, chronic physical disorders, and mental disorders on structured interviews. Approximation formulas were applied to calculate the estimated cost of ACEs in Singapore. RESULTS: ACEs were prevalent (63.9%) in the Singapore population. Individuals exposed to ≥ 3 ACEs (13.1%) utilized more direct medical care (e.g., primary care doctor and accident and emergency visits) and experienced greater productivity losses than those without ACEs (36.1%). The adjusted excess costs associated with ACEs per person were estimated to be S$767.40 (at least one ACE; 63.9%) and S$2167.84 (≥ 3 ACEs; 13.1%). The adjusted incremental costs of ACEs in the Singapore population were estimated to be S$1.18 billion (at least one ACE) and S$680 million (≥ 3 ACEs) per year. CONCLUSIONS: The health and economic burden of ACEs is substantial in Singapore. Our results highlight the importance of investing in novel, population-based ACEs interventions, and the potential return on investment through preventive care and alleviation of the health care burden. OBJECTIVES: Oral mucoceles are most frequently encountered on the lower lip. A variety of treatment options are currently employed, including surgical excision, pharmacological injections, and laser therapy. However, each of these approaches may introduce risks and potential complications. Clinical practice has demonstrated a potential for self-healing in lower lip mucoceles, making a conservative observational approach more appealing. This research is a prospective study aimed at evaluating the self-healing capacity of lower lip mucoceles. METHODS: In this prospective study, patients with mucoceles were encouraged to intentionally delay medical intervention and to wait for self-healing. Disappearance of the mucocele for at least 3 months was defined as self-healing. RESULTS: Thirty patients with lower lip mucoceles were included. With no intervention, 24 patients (80%) reported self-healing of lower lip mucoceles. The mean natural duration of the mucoceles was 3.63 (± 4.7; 1-24) months. After self-healing of the mucocele, the patients were followed up for 17.21 (± 9.45; 2-30) months and there were no reported recurrences. CONCLUSIONS: Lower lip mucoceles have a high potential for self-healing and patients may be routinely encouraged to wait for self-healing. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The high self-healing rate observed in this study suggests that a conservative, non-interventional approach might be considered as the first-line management for lower lip mucoceles.

BACKGROUND: Social support is a robust predictor of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Although the inverse relationship between perceived social support and PTSD (social causation model) is supported, less is understood about the antecedents of the social causation model. Further, there is limited research in non-Western psychiatric populations that experience elevated rates of trauma and PTSD (e.g., mood disorders). The present study evaluated whether cumulative traumatic life events influenced current PTSD symptoms through maladaptive personality traits and perceptions of social support among Asian patients with mood disorders. METHODS: A total of 200 Asian patients (77.5 % Chinese) with mood disorders were assessed for maladaptive personality traits, perceptions of social support, cumulative traumatic life events, PTSD, and depressive symptoms. Structural equation modelling was conducted to evaluate the extended social causation model. RESULTS: The extended social causation model demonstrated acceptable fit to the data (Comparative Fit Index [CFI] = 0.90; absolute Root Mean Square Error of Approximation [RMSEA] = 0.08). There were significant indirect effects of cumulative traumatic life events on current PTSD symptoms (ß = 0.29, p < .001; 85 % variance explained) and depressive symptoms (ß = 0.28, p < .001; 69 % variance explained). LIMITATIONS: Results may not be generalizable beyond the Singapore population due to the socio-cultural and environmental context. CONCLUSIONS: The present findings provide conceptual support for a maladaptive personality-informed model of social support and PTSD, which could better inform trauma-focused interventions in preventing and treating the debilitating effects of PTSD in psychiatric populations.

The fermentation of the high-viscosity polysaccharide WL gum has always been associated with poor mass transfer. Appropriate impeller configurations are key factors in maintaining homogeneity and sufficient mass transfer conditions. Therefore, a flat-folded disc turbine impeller (FFDT) taking into account both the reduced cavitation effect and the increased contact area was designed. Besides, a curved cross impeller (CC) and a fishbone-shaped impeller (FS) generating axial flow were also designed. The energy consumption and efficiency of the designed impellers and eight reported impellers were evaluated through fermentation and principal component analysis (PCA). Compared to the commonly-used six-blade flat-blade disc turbine (FBDT), the ungassed power number of FFDT was reduced by 50 %. Combinations of six-blade Brumajin impeller (BM) + FFDT and CC + FFDT produced high WL gum production and viscosity (34.0 g/L, 35.50 g/L, and 62.64 Pa·s, 61.68 Pa·s, respectively) and were suitable impellers for WL biosynthesis. WL gum from BM + FFDT showed higher viscosity, viscoelasticity, and molecular weight than that from FBDT + FBDT. In addition, fewer amino acids and pyruvic acid intermediates were formed using BM + FFDT, indicating a greater metabolic flux towards WL gum synthesis. This work provided an important reference for the design of impellers in high-viscosity fermentation systems.

BACKGROUND: Emotional urgency, defined as a trait concept of emotion-based impulsivity, is at least moderately associated with general psychopathology. However, its clinical significance and associations with clinically relevant features of bipolar disorder remain unclear. This scoping review aims address this gap by determining the extent of evidence in this niche scope of study. METHODS: Evidence of between-group differences of positive and negative urgency, its associations with mood severity, and all peripheral associations related to illness and psychosocial outcomes were synthesized based on PRISMA checklists and guidelines for scoping reviews (PRISMA-ScR). DESIGN: Electronic databases were searched for articles published between January 2001 and January 2024. A total of 1013 entries were gathered, and a total of 10 articles were included in the final selection after the removal of duplicates and ineligible articles. RESULTS: Differences in urgency scores between bipolar disorder and healthy controls were large (Cohen's d ranged from 1.77 to 2.20). Negative urgency was at least moderately associated with overall trauma, emotional abuse, neglect, suicide ideation, neuroticism, and irritable/cyclothymic temperament, whereas positive urgency was at least moderately associated with various aspects of aggression and quality of life. Positive but not negative urgency was associated with quality of life in bipolar disorder. CONCLUSION: Large between-group differences found for emotional urgency in bipolar disorder imply large clinical significance. Emotional urgency was associated with worse clinical features and outcomes. Given the high clinical heterogeneity of the disorder, emotional urgency may be an important phenotype indicative of greater disorder severity.

Particle rafts are a new kind of soft matter formed by self-organization on the interface, which possesses mechanical properties between fluid and solid, and they have been widely used in many industrial fields. In the present study, the compression experiment of a circular particle raft is first performed, where an SDS (sodium dodecyl sulfate)-coated metal ring is placed around its periphery. When the surfactant diffuses, the particle raft shrinks, and its shrinkage ratio increases with the increase in the surfactant concentration, where the experimental results are consistent with the numerical simulation. Next, the relationship between the initial surface tension difference of SDS and the radius shrinkage of the particle raft is obtained by dimensional analysis. In what follows, the diffusion model is built to quantify the diffusion process of SDS at the liquid-gas interface, and then the analytical concentration solution of the concentration of SDS at the periphery of particle raft is given. The particle raft is viewed as an elastic circular plate under the action of the radial pressure, which originates from the surface tension difference, which has been verified by the experimental result. These explorations cast a new light on how to apply loads to measure mechanical properties of soft matter, which also provide some inspirations on the design of microsensors and microfluidics.

UAVs have been widely used in deformation monitoring because of their high availability and flexibility. However, the quality of UAV images is affected by changing attitude and surveying environments, resulting in a low monitoring accuracy. Cross-shaped markers are used to improve the accuracy of UAV monitoring due to their distinct center contrast and absence of eccentricity. However, existing methods cannot rapidly and precisely detect these markers in UAV images. To address these problems, this paper proposes an adaptive Radon-transform-based marker detection and localization method for UAV displacement measurements, focusing on two critical detection parameters, namely, the radius of marker information acquisition and the edge width of the cross-shaped scoring template. The experimental results show that the marker detection rate is 97.2% under different combinations of flight altitudes, radius ratios of marker information acquisition, and marker sizes. Furthermore, the root mean square error of detection and localization is 0.57 pixels, significantly surpassing the performance and accuracy of other methods. We also derive the critical detection radius and appropriate parameter combinations for different heights to further improve the practicality of the method.

This study evaluated the outcomes of a bare metal stent (BMS), DCB alone, atherectomy plus a drug-coated balloon (AT + DCB) and AT alone for the treatment of femoropopliteal artery occlusion. Four groups were included in this retrospective cohort study: 119 patients underwent the BMS procedure, 89 patients underwent DCB alone, 52 patients underwent AT + DCB, and 61 patients underwent AT alone. Patients were followed-up at 1, 6, 12 and 24 months after the procedure, the clinical outcomes and complications were assessed, and the primary outcomes were primary patency and restenosis. AT + DCB showed a lower bailout stent, and BMS displayed a higher retrograde puncture, flow-limiting dissection and postdilation (p < 0.05). For all procedures, the walking distance, ABI and pain score post-procedure were significantly improved compared with the pre-procedure values (p < 0.001). The restenosis rate was higher in BMS (21.0%) and AT alone (24.6%) than in DCB (10.1%) alone and AT + DCB (11.5%) (p = 0.04); there was no difference in amputation or clinically driven target lesion revascularization among procedures. The primary patency rates were 77.7%, 89.4%, 88.0% and 73.7% in the BMS, DCB alone, AT + DCB and AT alone groups at 24 months, respectively (p = 0.03), while the secondary patency and main adverse events (stroke, MI and death) were similar. Proximal concavity, proximal target vessel diameter ≥ 5 mm, runoff number ≥ 2 and DCB use were protective factors for primary patency. Our results suggested that AT + DCB and DCB alone were associated with higher primary patency, and DCB devices (combined with/without AT) should be the preferred choice for FP lesions.

OBJECTIVE: Global emotion dysregulation mediates the relationship between child maltreatment and severe depressive symptoms; however, there is a lack of research on maladaptive personality traits and their contribution to individual differences in global emotion dysregulation within this conceptual model. The present study tested a preliminary serial mediation model where maladaptive personality traits and global emotion dysregulation mediate the relationship between child maltreatment and severe depressive symptoms. METHOD: A total of 200 patients with mood disorders (Mage = 36.5 years; 54% females) were assessed for maladaptive personality traits (Personality Inventory for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders [5th ed.] Brief Form), global emotion dysregulation (Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale-Short), childhood trauma (Childhood Trauma Questionnaire), and depressive symptoms (Patient Health Questionnaire-9). RESULTS: Ordinary least squares regression and partial least squares-structural equation modeling revealed a consistent and significant indirect effect of child maltreatment on severe depressive symptoms through negative affectivity, detachment, psychoticism, and global emotion dysregulation. Among child maltreatment types, only emotional abuse had a significant indirect effect on severe depressive symptoms through maladaptive personality traits and global emotion dysregulation, b = 0.50, SE = 0.09, 95% confidence intervals [0.326, 0.694] after controlling for age, gender, and remaining types of child maltreatment. CONCLUSIONS: Findings support the view that maladaptive personality traits shed important insights on individual differences in global emotion dysregulation, and this information could aid clinical formulation and treatment of childhood adversity-related psychopathology. Introduction: Emotional urgency is an emotion-based subdimension of trait impulsivity that is more clinically relevant to psychopathology and disorders of emotion dysfunction than non-emotional subdimensions (i.e., lack of perseverance, sensation seeking, lack of premeditation). However, few studies have examined the relative effects of emotional urgency in bipolar disorder. This cross-sectional study aimed to establish the clinical relevance of emotional urgency in bipolar disorders by (1) explicating clinically relevant correlates of emotional urgency and (2) comparing its effects against non-emotional impulsivity subdimensions. Methods and results: A total of 150 individuals with bipolar disorder were recruited between October 2021 and January 2023. Zero-order correlations found that emotional urgency had the greatest effect on bipolar symptoms (r = 0.37 to 0.44). Multiple two-step hierarchical regression models showed that (1) positive urgency predicted past manic symptomology and dysfunction severity (b = 1.94, p < 0.001 and 0.35 p < 0.05, respectively), (2) negative urgency predicted current depression severity, and (3) non-emotional facets of impulsivity had smaller effects on bipolar symptoms and dysfunction by contrast, and were non-significant factors in the final step of all regression models (b < 0.30, ns); Those who had a history of attempted suicide had significantly greater levels of emotional urgency (Cohen's d = -0.63). Discussion: Notwithstanding the study's limitations, our findings expand status quo knowledge beyond the perennial relationship between non-emotion-based impulsivity and bipolar disorder and its implications.

Urechis unicinctus can utilize the ability of large deformation to advance in sands by radial expansion, just using a small force. However, the large deformation of U. unicinctus skin and the discrete nature of the sands make it hard to analyze this process quantitatively. In this study, we aim to uncover the burrowing mechanism of U. unicinctus in granular sediments by combining discrete and finite elements. We observe that U. unicinctus will expand radially at the head, and then the head will shrink to move forward. The radial expansion will collapse the sands and let them flow, making it easy to advance. U. unicinctus mainly relies on the skin's large deformation and sufficient pressure to achieve radial expansion. Thus, we first establish the large deformation constitutive model of the skin. The stress-strain relationship can be expressed by the Yeoh model. Meanwhile, the pressure required for radial expansion is indirectly measured by the balloon experiment. To study the effect of radial expansion on the burrowing behavior, we use the finite element method-discrete element method (FEM-DEM) coupling model to simulate the expansion process of burrowing. The simulated pressure for radial expansion is very close to the experimental data, verifying the reliability of the simulation. The results show that the expansion can drastically reduce the pressure of sand particles on the head front face by 97.1% ± 0.6%, significantly decreasing the difficulty of burrowing. This unique underwater burrow method of U. unicinctus can provide new ideas for engineering burrowing devices in soft soil, especially for granular sediments.

BACKGROUND: A false negative result is one of the major problems in nucleic acid detection. Failure to screen positive samples for pathogens or viruses poses a risk to public health. This situation will lead to more serious consequences for infectious pathogens or viruses. At present, the common solution is to introduce exogenous or endogenous internal control. Because it amplifies and is detected separately from the target gene, it cannot avoid false negative results caused by DNA extraction failure or reagent inactivation. There is an urgent need for a simple and reliable method to solve the false negative problem of nucleic acid detection. RESULTS: We established a chip and an on-chip detection method for the integrated detection of target genes and internal control using the CRISPR system in LAMP amplification products. The chip is processed from a low-cost PMMA board and has three chambers and some channels. After adding the sample, the chip only needs to be rotated twice, and the sample enters three chambers successively depending on its gravity for dual LAMP reaction and CRISPR detections. With a portable LED blue light exciter, visual fluorescence detection is realized. Whether the detection result is positive, negative, or invalid can be determined according to the fluorescence in the CRISPR chamber for target gene and CRISPR chamber for internal control. In this study, the detection of Salmonella enterica in Fenneropenaeus chinensis was taken as an example. The results showed good specificity and sensitivity. It could detect as low as 15 copies/µL of Salmonella enterica. SIGNIFICANCE: The on-chip detection solves the problem of aerosol contamination and false negative results. It has the advantages of high sensitivity, high specificity, high accuracy, and low cost. This research will advance the development of nucleic acid detection technology, providing a new and reliable strategy for POCT detection of pathogenic bacteria and viruses.

Objective Our study aimed to explore four serum levels of biochemical markers, including brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), homocysteine (Hcy), nitric oxide (NO), and γ-interferon (IFN-γ), in elderly patients with vascular dementia (VD) after the cerebral infarction and to elucidate possible connections between them. Method The elderly patients with VD after cerebral infarction admitted in our hospital, and the elderly persons for physical examination from November 2020 to December 2021 were included in this study. The serum levels of BDNF, Hcy, NO, and IFN-γ were compared between the study group and the control group. Results In the study group, the serum levels of Hcy and IFN-γ were significantly higher than that in the control group, whereas significantly lower serum levels of BDNF and NO were found in the study group compared with the control group. After receiving the intervention of donepezil and/or idebenone, the serum levels of Hcy and IFN-γ in group B were significantly lower than that in group A, while the serum levels of BDNF and NO in group B were significantly higher than that in Group A. Conclusion The results of our study showed abnormally expressed serum levels of Hcy, IFN-γ, BDNF, and NO in elderly patients with VD after cerebral infarction which might strongly reflect the severity of VD. Moreover, after intervention of donepezil alone or combined with idebenone, the changes of serum levels of Hcy, IFN-γ, BDNF, and NO may reflect the curative effect of the disease.

Background: Increasing research efforts have focused on understanding why some individuals develop severe psychopathology after exposure to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). Sleep disturbances (insomnia, nightmares, and sleep disorders) are prevalent sequelae of ACEs and associated with psychopathology; however, there is no meta-analytic evidence on whether sleep disturbance functions as a transdiagnostic mediator in the relationship between ACEs and psychopathology (internalizing/externalizing disorders and psychosis) in children and adolescents. Methods: Systematic searches in three databases (PubMed; PsycINFO; Web of Science) identified 98 articles (N = 402,718; age range 1-17 years) and the present study used a novel two-stage meta-analytic structural equation model to investigate whether ACEs predict psychopathology through sleep disturbance. Subgroup analyses determined potential biases due to study design (cross-sectional vs. longitudinal) and geographical differences (Western vs. non-Western countries). Sensitivity analyses evaluated the influence of early childhood (<5 years old) and overlapping symptoms (i.e., nightmares and trauma symptoms) on model stability. Results: The pooled correlations among ACEs, sleep disturbance, and psychopathology were significant; the effect sizes ranged from moderate to high (r = 0.21 to r = 0.29). The indirect effect from ACEs via sleep disturbance to psychopathology was significant (ß = 0.05, 95% CI [0.04, 0.06]). The direct effect of ACEs on psychopathology was significant (ß = 0.18, 95% CI 0.13-0.24). Subgroup analyses revealed larger effects for cross-sectional studies than longitudinal studies (Δ χ2 (3) = 9.71, p = 0.021). Sensitivity analyses revealed stable and consistent results. Conclusions: The present meta-analytic results indicate that sleep disturbance is a transdiagnostic mediator in the relationship between ACEs and psychopathology among children and adolescents. Further research is required to determine the synergistic effects between sleep disturbance and other risk mechanisms, and elucidate the complex pathways that lead to disorder in the aftermath of childhood adversities.

Reliable and controllable growth of two-dimensional (2D) hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) is essential for its wide range of applications. Substrate engineering is one of the critical factors that influence the growth of the epitaxial h-BN films. Here, we report the growth of monolayer h-BN on Ni (111) substrates incorporated with oxygen atoms via molecular beam epitaxy. It was found that the increase of incorporated oxygen concentration in the Ni substrate through a pretreatment process prior to the h-BN growth step would have an adverse effect on the morphology and growth rate of 2D h-BN. Under the same growth condition, h-BN monolayer coverage decreases exponentially as the amount of oxygen incorporated into Ni (111) increases. Density functional theory calculations and climbing image nudged elastic band (CI-NEB) method reveal that the substitutional oxygen atoms can increase the diffusion energy barrier of B and N atoms on Ni (111) thereby inhibiting the growth of h-BN films. As-grown large-area h-BN monolayer films and fabricated Al/h-BN/Ni (MIM) nanodevices were comprehensively characterized to evaluate the structural, optical and electrical properties of high-quality monolayers. Direct tunneling mechanism and high breakdown strength of ∼11.2 MV cm-1are demonstrated for the h-BN monolayers grown on oxygen-incorporated Ni (111) substrates, indicating that these films have high quality. This study provides a unique example that heterogeneous catalysis principles can be applied to the epitaxy of 2D crystals in solid state field. Similar strategies can be used to grow other 2D crystalline materials, and are expected to facilitate the development of next generation devices based on 2D crystals.

In the present study, the morphology evolution of a particle raft with a preprepared crack, which is caused by injecting the surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) into water, is demonstrated. Experimental results on the process of crack closure and configuration evolution are captured and are in excellent agreement with the numerical simulations. Then a surface diffusion model on SDS is proposed to quantify the detailed physical scenario. The surface diffusion factor is determined through the shooting method based on the experimental result of dynamic surface tension. As a result, the analytical solution for the SDS concentration distribution is given. The theoretical result on the dependence relationship between the profile shrinkage ratio and the time variable is consistent with the experimental result. At last, the relation between the initial surface tension difference of SDS and the profile shrinkage ratio is obtained in the light of experiments and dimensional analysis, and the two results are very close. These analyses provide a comprehensive understanding of the coupling between chemicals and mechanical behaviors of soft matter, and the modulation of defects in the particle raft provides some inspiration for engineering new devices at the microscale.

Cancer metastasis is an extremely complex process affected by many factors. An acidic microenvironment can drive cancer cell migration toward blood vessels while also hampering immune cell activity. Here, we identified a mechanism mediated by sialyltransferases that induces an acidic tumor-permissive microenvironment (ATPME) in BRCA1-mutant and most BRCA1-low breast cancers. Hypersialylation mediated by ST8SIA4 perturbed the mammary epithelial bilayer structure and generated an ATPME and immunosuppressive microenvironment with increased PD-L1 and PD1 expressions. Mechanistically, BRCA1 deficiency increased expression of VEGFA and IL6 to activate TGFß-ST8SIA4 signaling. High levels of ST8SIA4 led to accumulation of polysialic acid (PSA) on mammary epithelial membranes that facilitated escape of cancer cells from immunosurveillance, promoting metastasis and resistance to αPD1 treatment. The sialyltransferase inhibitor 3Fax-Peracetyl Neu5Ac neutralized the ATPME, sensitized cancers to immune checkpoint blockade by activating CD8 T cells, and inhibited tumor growth and metastasis. Together, these findings identify a potential therapeutic option for cancers with a high level of PSA. SIGNIFICANCE: BRCA1 deficiency generates an acidic microenvironment to promote cancer metastasis and immunotherapy resistance that can be reversed using a sialyltransferase inhibitor.

With the rapid development of origami technology, worm-inspired origami robots have attracted tremendous interest owing to their colourful locomotion behaviours, such as creeping, rolling, climbing and obstacle crossing. In the present study, we aim to engineer a worm-inspired robot based on knitting process with paper, which could realize complicated functions associated large deformation and exquisite locomotion patterns. At first we fabricate the backbone of the robot by using the paper-knitting technique. The experiment shows that the backbone of the robot can endure significant deformation during the tension, compression and bending process, and this feature ensures it can achieve the desired targets of motion. Next, the magnetic forces and torques under the actuation of permanent magnets are analysed, which are just the driving forces of the robot. We then consider three formats of motion on the robot, i.e. the inchworm motion, the Omega motion, and the hybrid motion. Typical examples for the robot fulfil desired tasks are given, including sweeping obstacles, climbing the wall and delivering cargoes. Detailed theoretical analyses and numerical simulations are performed to illustrate these experimental phenomena. The results show that the developed origami robot is equipped with such characteristics as lightweight and great flexibility, which is sufficiently robust in various environments. These promising performances shed new light on design and fabrication of bio-inspired robots with good intelligence.
