RESUMEN

Complicated chemical reactions occur in the decoction of traditional Chinese medicines(TCMs) which features complex components, influencing the safety, efficacy, and quality controllability of TCMs. Therefore, it is particularly important to clarify the chemical reaction mechanism of TCMs in the decoction. This study summarized eight typical chemical reactions in the decoction of TCMs, such as substitution reaction, redox reaction, isomerization/stereoselective reaction, complexation, and supramolecular reaction. With the "toxicity attenuation and efficiency enhancement" of aconitines and other examples, this study reviewed the reactions in decoction of TCMs, which was expected to clarify the variation mechanisms of key chemical components in this process and to help guide medicine preparation and safe and rational use of medicine in clinical settings. The current main research methods for chemical reaction mechanisms of decoction of TCMs were also summed up and compared. The novel real-time analysis device of decoction system for TCMs was found to be efficient and simple without the pre-treatment of samples. This device provides a promising solution, which has great potential in quantity evaluation and control of TCMs. Moreover, it is expected to become a foundational and exemplary research tool, which can advance the research in this field.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Semen Ziziphi Spinosae (SZS), the seed of Ziziphus jujuba var. spinosa (Bunge) Hu ex H.F. Chow (Chinese name Suan-Zao-Ren), is widely distributed in China, Laos, Myanmar, and Iran. It is a classic traditional Chinese medicine with sedative and sleeping effects. In clinical practice, there are more than 155 proprietary Chinese medicines containing SZS. However, many commercial SZS products are difficult to qualify using current methods. Moreover, there is a scarcity of quality standards for SZS in proprietary Chinese medicines. AIM OF THE STUDY: The purpose of this study was to clearly reveal the quality indicators during the entire production process of SZS and its products. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study reviewed more than 230 articles and related books on the quality control of SZS and its proprietary Chinese medicines published over the last 40 years (from January 1979 to October 2022). Moreover, where available, information on the quality of SZS and its proprietary Chinese medicines was also collected from websites for comparison, including online publications (e.g. PubMed, CNKI, Google Scholar, and Web of Science), the information at Yaozhi website and China Medical Information Platform, along with some classic books on Chinese herbal medicine. The literature and information search were conducted using keywords such as "Suan-Zao-Ren", " Ziziphus jujuba" and "quality control", and the latest results from various databases were combined to obtain valid information. The active components, which in vivo exposure, and Q-markers were also summarized. RESULTS: The jujuboside A, jujuboside B, and spinosin were revealed as the key Q-markers for SZS. Moreover, the advancements and prospects of the quality control for SZS and its extract, proprietary Chinese medicines, health foods, and adulterants were comprehensively summarized. The high-performance liquid chromatography-UV/evaporative light scattering detection and fingerprint analysis were found to be the mainstream methods for the SZS quality control. In particular, the novel quality evaluation method based on the unit content was applied for SZS and its proprietary Chinese medicines. Significant fluctuations were found in the contents of Q-markers. Moreover, the mass transfer rule of Q-markers was comprehensively clarified based on the entire production process, including production origins, ripening time, primary process, processing, compatibility decoction/extract, and storage. Ultimately, the crushing and compatibility of SZS were found to be the key steps affecting the active components. CONCLUSIONS: In short, this study provides solid evidences to reveal quality indicators for the entire production process of developing rational quality standards for SZS and its products. Moreover, this study also provides a template quality control overview, which could be extended to other traditional Chinese medicines.

Objectives: To investigate a deep learning reconstruction algorithm to reduce the time of synthetic MRI (SynMRI) scanning on the breast and improve the image quality. Materials and Methods: A total of 192 healthy female volunteers (mean age: 48.1 years) underwent the breast MR examination at 3.0 T from September 2020 to June 2021. Standard SynMRI and fast SynMRI scans were collected simultaneously on the same volunteer. Deep learning technology with a generative adversarial network (GAN) was used to generate high-quality fast SynMRI images by end-to-end training. Peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR), mean squared error (MSE), and structural similarity index measure (SSIM) were used to compare the image quality of generated images from fast SynMRI by deep learning algorithms. Results: Fast SynMRI acquisition time is half of the standard SynMRI scan, and the generated images of the GAN model show that PSNR and SSIM are improved and MSE is reduced. Conclusion: The application of deep learning algorithms with GAN model in breast MAGiC MRI improves the image quality and reduces the scanning time.

Single-pixel imaging (SPI) has attracted widespread attention because it generally uses a non-pixelated photodetector and a digital micromirror device (DMD) to acquire the object image. Since the modulated patterns seen from two reflection directions of the DMD are naturally complementary, one can apply complementary balanced measurements to greatly improve the measurement signal-to-noise ratio and reconstruction quality. However, the balance between two reflection arms significantly determines the quality of differential measurements. In this work, we propose and demonstrate a simple secondary complementary balancing mechanism to minimize the impact of the imbalance on the imaging system. In our SPI setup, we used a silicon free-space balanced amplified photodetector with 5 mm active diameter which could directly output the difference between two optical input signals in two reflection arms. Both simulation and experimental results have demonstrated that the use of secondary complementary balancing can result in a better cancellation of direct current components of measurements, and can acquire an image quality slightly better than that of single-arm single-pixel complementary measurement scheme (which is free from the trouble of optical imbalance) and over 20 times better than that of double-arm dual-pixel complementary measurement scheme under optical imbalance conditions.

Glomerulosclerosis and renal interstitial fibrosis occur with the aging kidney. In this study, we examined the expression of miR-21, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor(PPARα), hypoxia-inducible factor(HIF-1α) in the kidney of 3-month-old rats fed ad libitum (YAL), 24-month-old rats fed ad libitum (OAL) and 24-month-old rats subjected to a 70% calorie-restricted diet for 8 months (OCR). We found long-term caloric restriction (CR) ameliorated aging and aging-related fibrosis. CR ameliorated the increment of miR-21 and HIF-1α, as well as the decrement of PPARα in old ad libitum group. Human proximal tubular cells (HPTCs) presented phenotypes of senescence and epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) under high-glucose conditions, in which senescence occurred earlier than EMT. Senescent cells secreted extracellular vesicles (EVs) which contained miR-21 into the recipient cells. Inhibiting miR-21 of donor cells prevented the occurrence of EMT in recipient cells. In addition, miR-21 induced EMT through targeting PPARα protein and consequently enhancing HIF-1α expression, although other pathways cannot be ruled out. These findings demonstrated that miR-21-containing EVs derived from the senescent cells could facilitate EMT of HPTCs via PPARα-HIF-1α signaling pathway. Long-term caloric restriction and caloric restriction mimetics alleviated aging-related-fibrosis of kidney through downregulation of miR-21.

BACKGROUND: Previous clinical studies have reported that electrical stimulation (ES) can be utilized to treat children with limbs spasticity (LS) after traumatic brain injury (TBI). Currently, no systematic review has addressed the effect of ES in children with LS following TBI. Thus, this systematic review will assess the effect and safety of ES for the children with LS after TBI. METHODS: We will conduct the present systematic review of randomized controlled trials that will be retrieved from searches of PubMed, PsycINFO, WOS, Scopus, OpenGrey, Google Scholar, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Embase, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Allied and Complementary Medicine Database, and Chinese Biomedical Literature Database from the inception to the date of the literature searched. In addition, the clinical register websites, and reference lists of relevant studies will also be searched. Two independent reviewers will evaluate the eligibility criteria for all papers, extract the data and determine the methodology quality by using Cochrane risk of bias tool. RESULTS: The results of this systematic review will pool the latest available data, and are expected to provide the summary of present evidence of ES for children with LS following TBI. TIMELINE: This systematic review will start on January 10, 2019 and expected to complete by June 1, 2019. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: No research ethic approval is needed in this study, because the data of this systematic review will not base on the individual data level. The results will be disseminated to publish at peer-reviewed journals or will present at relevant conferences. PROSPERO REGISTRATION NUMBER: CRD42019120037.

The mimicry of human skin to detect both oncoming and physical-contacting object is of great importance in the fields of manufacturing, artificial robots and vehicles, etc. Herein, a novel bioinspired flexible and highly responsive dual-mode strain/magnetism composite sensor, which works via both contact and contactless modes, is first fabricated by incorporating Fe3O4/silicone system into a carbon fiber aerogel (CFA). The distance dependence of magnetic field endorses the CFA/Fe3O4/silicone composite possible for spatial sensing due to the introduction of Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles. As a result, the as-prepared flexible sensor exhibits precise and real-time response not only to direct-contact compression as usual but also to contactless magnetic field in a wide frequency range from 0.1 to 10 Hz, achieving the maximum variance of 68% and 86% in relative electrical resistance, respectively. The contact and contactless sensing modes of the strain/magnetism sensor are clearly demonstrated by recording the speeds of bicycle riding and walking, respectively. Interestingly, this dual-mode composite sensor exhibits the capacity of identifying the contact and contactless state, which is the first report for flexible sensors. The current protocol is eco-friendly, facile, and thought-provoking for the fabrication of multifunctional sensors.
