RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To evaluate the ventricular electrophysiologic effects of long-term stimulation of the left dorsal branch of thoracic nerve (LDTN) derived from the left stellate ganglion (LSG) in a canine model of chronic myocardial infarction (MI). METHODS: Seventeen adult male beagles were randomly divided into three groups: the sham group (sham operated, n = 6), the MI group (n = 6), and the MI + LDTN group (MI plus LDTN stimulation, n = 5). The canine model of chronic MI was induced by the occlusion of the left anterior descending artery (LADO). The LDTN was separated and intermittently stimulated immediately after LADO for 2 months. The heart rate variability (HRV) analysis, in vivo electrophysiology, the evaluation of LSG function and neural activity, histological staining, and western blotting (WB) assay were performed to evaluate the effect of LDTN stimulation on the heart. RESULTS: The canine MI model was successfully established by LADO, and the LDTN was separated and stimulated immediately after LADO. The HRV analysis showed that LDTN stimulation reversed the increased LF value and LF/HF ratio of the MI group. LDTN stimulation prolonged the shortening ERP and APD90, decreased the dispersion of ERP and APD90, and increased the VFT. Additionally, LDTN stimulation inhibits the LSG function and neural activity. Furthermore, LDTN stimulation suppressed the activation of Wnt/ß-catenin signaling, which contributed to the LSG neuronal apoptosis by upregulation of pro-apoptotic Bax and downregulation of anti-apoptotic Bcl-2. CONCLUSION: LDTN stimulation could attenuate cardiac sympathetic remodeling and improve ventricular electrical remodeling, which may be mediated by suppressing the activated Wnt/ß-catenin signaling pathway and then promoting the LSG neuronal apoptosis.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a global public health event of great concern, however epidemic data on TB covering entire areas during the special period of the COVID-19 epidemic have rarely been reported. We compared the dissemination and multidrug-resistance patterns of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) in the main urban area of Luoyang City, China (including six municipal jurisdictions) and nine county and township areas under its jurisdiction, aimed to establish the epidemiology of TB in this region and to provide reference for precision anti-TB in places with similar settings. METHODS: From 2020 to 2022, sputum samples were collected from 18,504 patients with confirmed, suspected and unexcluded TB in 10 designated TB medical institutions. Insertion sequence 6110 was amplified by PCR (rpoB gene detection if necessary) to confirm the presence of MTBC. PCR-positive specimens were analyzed by multicolor melting curve analysis to detect multidrug resistance. RESULTS: Among the 18,504 specimens, 2675 (14.5%) were MTBC positive. The positive rate was higher in the main urban area than in the county and township areas (29.8% vs. 10.9%, p < 0.001). Male, re-treated and smear-positive groups were high-burden carriers of MTBC. Individuals aged > 60 years were the largest group infected with MTBC in the main urban area, compared with individuals aged < 61 years in the county and township areas. The detection of multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) was higher in the main urban area than in the county and township areas (13.9% vs. 7.8%, p < 0.001). In all areas, MDR-TB groups were dominated by males, patients with a history of TB treatment, and patients aged < 61 years. Stratified analysis of MDR-TB epidemiology showed that MDR4 (INH þ RIF þ EMB þ SM) was predominant in the main urban area, while MDR3 (INH þ RIF þ SM) was predominant in the county and township areas. MDR-TB detection rate and epidemiology differed among the county and township areas. CONCLUSIONS: For local TB control, it is necessary to plan more appropriate and accurate prevention and control strategies according to the regional distribution of MTBC infection.

RESUMEN

Oral medication for ulcerative colitis (UC) is often hindered by challenges such as inadequate accumulation, limited penetration of mucus barriers, and the intricate task of mitigating excessive ROS and inflammatory cytokines. Here, we present a strategy involving sodium alginate microspheres (SAMs) incorporating M2 macrophage membrane (M2M)-coated Janus nanomotors (denominated as Motor@M2M) for targeted treatment of UC. SAM provides a protective barrier, ensuring that Motor@M2M withstands the harsh gastric milieu and exhibits controlled release. M2M enhances the targeting precision of nanomotors to inflammatory tissues and acts as a decoy for the neutralization of inflammatory cytokines. Catalytic decomposition of H2O2 by MnO2 in the oxidative microenvironment generates O2 bubbles, propelling Motor@M2M across the mucus barrier into inflamed colon tissues. Upon oral administration, Motor@M2M@SAM notably ameliorated UC severity, including inflammation mitigation, ROS scavenging, macrophage reprogramming, and restoration of the intestinal barrier and microbiota. Consequently, our investigation introduces a promising oral microsphere formulation of macrophage-biomimetic nanorobots, providing a promising approach for UC treatment.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Infections by non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) have become more common in recent years. Mycobacterium canariasense (M. canariasense) was first reported as an opportunistic pathogen in 2004, but there have been very few case reports since then. Nocardia is a genus of aerobic and Gram-positive bacilli, and these species are also opportunistic pathogens and in the Mycobacteriales order. Conventional methods for diagnosis of NTM are inefficient. Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) can rapidly detect many pathogenic microorganisms, even rare species. Most NTM and Nocardia infections occur in immunocompromised patients with atypical clinical symptoms. There are no previous reports of infection by M. canariasense and Nocardia farcinica (N. farcinica), especially in immunocompetent patients. This case report describes an immunocompetent 52-year-old woman who had overlapping infections of M. canariasense, N. farcinica, and Candida parapsilosis (C. parapsilosis) based on mNGS. CASE SUMMARY: A 52-year-old woman presented with a productive cough and chest pain for 2 wk, and recurrent episodes of moderate-grade fever for 1 wk. She received antibiotics for 1 wk at a local hospital, and experienced defervescence, but the productive cough and chest pain persisted. We collected samples of a lung lesion and alveolar lavage fluid for mNGS. The lung tissue was positive for M. canariasense, N. farcinica, and C. parapsilosis, and the alveolar lavage fluid was positive for M. canariasense. The diagnosis was pneumonia, and application of appropriate antibiotic therapy cured the patient. CONCLUSION: Etiological diagnosis is critical for patients with infectious diseases. mNGS can identify rare and novel pathogens, and does not require a priori knowledge.

RESUMEN

CsPbBr3 nanoplatelets (NPLs), as some of the two-dimensional lead halide perovskites, have been intensively investigated due to their outstanding photophysical and photoelectric properties. However, there remain unclear fundamental issues on their carrier kinetics and the low-energy tail in their photoluminescence (PL) spectrum. In this paper, we synthesized CsPbBr3 NPLs with five [PbBr6]4- monolayers and performed comprehensive studies by using steady-state absorption, PL, and femtosecond transient absorption (fs-TA) spectroscopic measurements. We determined both the biexciton Auger recombination time (7 ± 2 ps) and trapped exciton lifetime (110 ± 15 ps) of the five monolayer CsPbBr3 NPLs. We also investigated the origin of the low-energy tail emission in their PL spectrum. More importantly, we found that a negative ΔA feature in the energy range of 2.45-2.55 eV appears in their fs-TA spectrum at 2, 4 and 10 ps delay times, which could help them act as a laser gain medium. The low-energy tail emission in their PL spectrum overlaps well with the negative ΔA feature in the energy range of 2.45-2.55 eV in their fs-TA spectrum at 2, 4 and 10 ps delay times.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To study the correlation between achilles tendon rupture (ATR) and hyperuricemia, also verify the known risk factors for ATR. METHODS: A retrospective review of 488 subjects was performed (182 with Achilles tendon rupture, 306 controls with ankle sprains). Demographic variables and risk factors for rupture were tabulated and compared. The baseline data and related indicators were compared, and the risk factors of ATR were analyzed by constructing a binary logistic regression model. RESULTS: Univariate logistic analysis showed that BMI, smoking, and hyperuricemia were risk factors for the development of ATR (OR = 1.65, 95%CI 1.13-2.42, P = 0.01; OR = 1.47, 95%CI 1.00-2.24, P < 0.05; OR = 2.85, 95%CI 1.84-4.42, P < 0.01). Multifactorial analysis showed that BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2, smoking, and hyperuricemia were independent risk factors for the development of ATR (OR = 1.66, 95%CI 1.11-2.49, P = 0.01; OR = 2.15, 95%CI 1.28-3.60, P < 0.01; OR = 3.06, 95%CI 1.92-4.89, P < 0.01). Among the blood biochemical indicators, total cholesterol (TC) and uric acid (UA) were independent risk factors for the occurrence of ATR (OR = 1.54, 95% CI 1.12-2.12, P = 0.01; OR = 1.01, 95% CI 1.01-1.01, P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: Our study confirmed that, as in previous results, higher BMI, smoking, and total cholesterol are risk factors for ATR, Hyperuricemia may contribute to the development of ATR, and adjunctive tests for TC and UA in the blood biochemistry may be helpful in predicting the risk of ATR.

RESUMEN

The use of digital twins (DTs) has proliferated across various fields and industries, with a recent surge in the healthcare sector. The concept of digital twin for health (DT4H) holds great promise to revolutionize the entire healthcare system, including management and delivery, disease treatment and prevention, and health well-being maintenance, ultimately improving human life. The rapid growth of big data and continuous advancement in data science (DS) and artificial intelligence (AI) have the potential to significantly expedite DT research and development by providing scientific expertise, essential data, and robust cybertechnology infrastructure. Although various DT initiatives have been underway in the industry, government, and military, DT4H is still in its early stages. This paper presents an overview of the current applications of DTs in healthcare, examines consortium research centers and their limitations, and surveys the current landscape of emerging research and development opportunities in healthcare. We envision the emergence of a collaborative global effort among stakeholders to enhance healthcare and improve the quality of life for millions of individuals worldwide through pioneering research and development in the realm of DT technology.

RESUMEN

Membrane-camouflaged nanomedicines often suffer from reduced efficacy caused by membrane protein disintegration and spatial disorder caused by separation and reassembly of membrane fragments during the coating process. Here we show that intracellularly gelated macrophages (GMs) preserve cell membrane structures, including protein content, integration and fluidity, as well as the membrane lipid order. Consequently, in our testing GMs act as cellular sponges to efficiently neutralize various inflammatory cytokines via receptor-ligand interactions, and serve as immune cell-like carriers to selectively bind inflammatory cells in culture medium, even under a flow condition. In a rat model of collagen-induced arthritis, GMs alleviate the joint injury, and suppress the overall arthritis severity. Upon intravenous injection, GMs efficiently accumulate in the inflammatory lungs of acute pneumonia mice for anti-inflammatory therapy. Conveniently, GMs are amenable to lyophilization and can be stored at ambient temperatures for at least 1 month without loss of integrity and bio-activity. This intracellular gelation technology provides a universal platform for targeted inflammation neutralization treatment.

RESUMEN

Peripheral nerve injury (PNI) remains a severe clinical problem with debilitating consequences. Mesenchymal stem cell (MSC)-based therapy is promising, but the problems of poor engraftment and insufficient neurotrophic effects need to be overcome. Herein, we isolated platelet-rich plasma-derived exosomes (PRP-Exos), which contain abundant bioactive molecules, and investigated their potential to increase the regenerative capacity of MSCs. We observed that PRP-Exos significantly increased MSC proliferation, viability, and mobility, decreased MSC apoptosis under stress, maintained MSC stemness, and attenuated MSC senescence. In vivo, PRP-Exo-treated MSCs (pExo-MSCs) exhibited an increased retention rate and heightened therapeutic efficacy, as indicated by increased axonal regeneration, remyelination, and recovery of neurological function in a PNI model. In vitro, pExo-MSCs coculture promoted Schwann cell proliferation and dorsal root ganglion axon growth. Moreover, the increased neurotrophic behaviour of pExo-MSCs was mediated by trophic factors, particularly glia-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF), and PRP-Exos activated the PI3K/Akt signalling pathway in MSCs, leading to the observed phenotypes. These findings demonstrate that PRP-Exos may be novel agents for increasing the ability of MSCs to promote neural repair and regeneration in patients with PNI.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Peripheral nerve injury (PNI) presents a significant clinical challenge, leading to enduring sensory-motor impairments. While mesenchymal stem cell (MSC)-based therapy holds promise for PNI treatment, enhancing its neurotrophic effects remains crucial. Platelet-rich plasma-derived exosomes (PRP-Exo), rich in bioactive molecules for intercellular communication, offer potential for modulating cellular biological activity. METHODS: PRP-Exo was isolated, and its impact on MSC viability was evaluated. The effects of PRP-Exo-treated MSCs (MSCPExo) on Schwann cells (SCs) from injured sciatic nerves and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) were assessed. Furthermore, the conditioned medium from MSCPExo (MSCPExo-CM) was analyzed using a cytokine array and validated through ELISA and Western blot. RESULTS: PRP-Exo enhanced MSC viability. Coculturing MSCPExo with SCs ameliorated apoptosis and promoted SC proliferation following PNI. Similarly, MSCPExo-CM exhibited pro-proliferative, migratory, and angiogenic effects. Cytokine array analysis identified 440 proteins in the MSCPExo secretome, with 155 showing upregulation and 6 showing downregulation, many demonstrating potent pro-regenerative properties. ELISA confirmed the enrichment of several angiotrophic and neurotrophic factors. Additionally, Western blot analysis revealed the activation of the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway in MSCPExo. CONCLUSION: Preconditioning MSCs with PRP-Exo enhanced the paracrine function, particularly augmenting neurotrophic and pro-angiogenic secretions, demonstrating an improved potential for neural repair.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Frailty has been currently considered as a multidimensional concept, including physical, cognitive and social frailty. Frailty has also been associated with a range of adverse events, which might increase the risks of disability, falls, fractures, delirium and death. Increasing evidence has shown that multicomponent exercise training can improve physical and cognitive function, delay or reverse frailty. However, there is still a lack of exercise intervention programmes for the frail older adults in China. This trial aims to investigate the effects of the muscle-building and antifrailty exercise combined with Baduanjin on the physical function of frail older adults, as well as the effectiveness and safety of the intervention. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This study is a prospective randomised controlled trial. A total of 192 patients, aged 70 years or older, who are diagnosed as prefrailty or frailty based on the Fried criteria will be included. Prior written and informed consent will be obtained from every subject. These subjects will be randomly assigned to the exercise intervention group (n=96) and the control group (n=96). The exercise intervention group will undergo different exercise programmes for different levels of physical function. They will perform the muscle-building and antifrailty exercise three times per week for 30-60 min for 24 weeks. The control group will implement health education on frailty and maintain the old lifestyle without any intervention. The primary outcomes include the change in frailty and functional capacity, assessed according to the Fried Scale and the Short Physical Performance Battery. Secondary outcomes include the changes in body composition, Activities of daily living, Mini-Mental State Examination, The Geriatric Depression Scale-15 and the haematological indicators. ETHICS STATEMENT: The study has been approved by the Medical Ethics Committee of the PLA General Hospital (approval no.: S2022-600-02). TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: ChiCTR2300070535.

RESUMEN

COVID-19, known as Coronavirus Disease 2019, is a major health issue resulting from novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. Its emergence has posed a significant menace to the global medical community and healthcare system across the world. Notably, on December 12, 2020, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the utilization of the Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines. As of July 31, 2022, the United Stated has witnessed over 91.3 million cases of COVID-19 and nearly 1.03 million fatalities. An intriguing observation is the recent reduction in the mortality rate of COVID-19, attributed to an augmented focus on early detection, comprehensive screening, and widespread vaccination. Despite this positive trend in some demographics, it is noteworthy that the overall incidence rates of COVID-19 among African American and Hispanic populations have continued to escalate, even as mortality rates have decreased. Therefore, the objective of this research study is to present an overview of COVID-19, spotlighting the disparities among different racial and ethnic groups. It also delves into the management of COVID-19 within the minority populations. To reach our research objective, we used a publicly available COVID-19 dataset from kaggle:https://www.kaggle.com/datasets/paultimothymooney/covid19-cases-and-deaths-by-race. In addition, we obtained COVID-19 datasets from 10 different states with the highest proportion of African American populations. Many considerable strikes have been made in COVID-19. However, success rate of treatment in the African American population remains relatively limited when compared to other ethnic groups. Hence, there arises a pressing need for novel strategies and innovative approaches to not only encourage prevention measures against COVID-19, but also to increase survival rates, diminish mortality rates, and ultimately improve the health outcomes of ethnic and racial minorities.

RESUMEN

Objective: Over the past few decades, the development of anti-cancer drugs in China has made outstanding achievements based on the support of national policies. To assess the progress of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) drugs, we conducted a statistical analysis of clinical trials of drugs targeting NSCLC in China from 2005 to 2023. Methods: We downloaded, screened and analysed the data from three official websites, the Centre for Drug Evaluation of China National Medical Products Administration website (NMPA), ClinicalTrials.gov and the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (ChiCTR). Results: From January 1, 2005 to April 15, 2023, a total of 1,357 drug clinical trials that met the standards were included, and the number of registered drug clinical trials has been increasing year by year, reaching the maximum of 199 in 2021. Among them, the maximum of 462 items (34.05%) in phase II clinical trials, followed by 333 (24.54%) in phase III clinical trials, and 139 (10.24%) in phase IV clinical trials. In all drug clinical trials, industry sponsored trials (ISTs) have 722 items (53.21%), which are higher than investigator-initiated trials (IITs). The clinical trials of chemical drugs have a maximum of 723 items (53.28%), while biopharmaceuticals have grown rapidly in the past 10 years, with a total of 374 (27.56%), and 48.19% of the drug clinical trials of combined medication. In addition, the geographical distribution of the leading units and participating units of Chinese drug clinical trials are uneven, and economic regions such as Beijing, Shanghai, Jiangsu are obviously ahead of other regions. Conclusion: From 2005 to 2023, the clinical trials of registered drugs for the treatment of NSCLC increased rapidly. Among them, due to the development of immunotherapy, the clinical trials of biopharmaceuticals and drugs for combined medication are growing most rapidly, while the exploration of the original drugs is a little far from enough. Our research provides a direction for the future drug clinical trials of NSCLC, laying foundation for further extending the survival rate of patients with NSCLC.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Phospholipases As (PLAs) are acyl hydrolases that catalyze the release of free fatty acids in phospholipids and play multiple functions in plant growth and development. The three families of PLAs are: PLA1, PLA2 (sPLA), and patatin-related PLA (pPLA). The diverse functions that pPLAs play in the growth and development of a broad range of plants have been demonstrated by prior studies. METHODS: Genome-wide analysis of the pPLA gene family and screening of genes for expression verification and gene silencing verification were conducted. Additionally, pollen vitality testing, analysis of the pollen expression pattern, and the detection of POD, SOD, CAT, MDA, and H2O2 were performed. RESULT: In this study, 294 pPLAs were identified from 13 plant species, including 46 GhpPLAs that were divided into three subfamilies (I-III). Expression patterns showed that the majority of GhpPLAs were preferentially expressed in the petal, pistil, anther, and ovule, among other reproductive organs. Particularly, GhpPLA23 and GhpPLA44, were found to be potentially important for the reproductive development of G. hirsutum. Functional validation was demonstrated by VIGS which showed that reduced expression levels of GhpPLA23 and GhpPLA44 in the silenced plants were associated with a decrease in pollen activity. Moreover, a substantial shift in ROS and ROS scavengers and a considerable increase in POD, CAT, SOD, and other physiological parameters was found out in these silenced plants. Our results provide plausibility to the hypothesis that GhpPLA23 and GhpPLA44 had a major developmental impact on cotton reproductive systems. These results also suggest that pPLAs are important for G. hirsutum's reproductive development and suggest that they could be employed as potential genes for haploid induction. CONCLUSIONS: The findings of the present research indicate that pPLA genes are essential for the development of floral organs and sperm cells in cotton. Consequently, this family might be important for the reproductive development of cotton and possibly for inducing the plant develop haploid progeny.

RESUMEN

The rice stem borer (RSB), Chilo suppressalis, a notorious rice pest in China, has evolved a high resistance level to commonly used insecticides. Tetraniliprole, a new anthranilic diamide insecticide, effectively controls multiple pests, including RSB. However, the potential resistance risk of RSB to tetraniliprole is still unknown. In this study, the tetraniliprole-selection (Tet-R) strain was obtained through 10 continuous generations of selection with tetraniliprole 30% lethal concentration (LC30 ). The realized heritability (h2 ) of the Tet-R strain was 0.387, indicating that resistance of RSB to tetraniliprole developed rapidly under the continuous selection of tetraniliprole. The Tet-R strain had a high fitness cost (relative fitness = 0.53). We established the susceptibility baseline of RSB to tetraniliprole (lethal concentration at LC50  = 0.727 mg/L) and investigated the resistance level of 6 field populations to tetraniliprole. All tested strains that had resistance to chlorantraniliprole exhibited moderate- to high-level resistance to tetraniliprole (resistance ratio = 27.7-806.8). Detection of ryanodine receptor (RyR) mutations showed that the Y4667C, Y4667D, I4758M, and Y4891F mutations were present in tested RSB field populations. RyR mutations were responsible for the cross-resistance between tetraniliprole and chlorantraniliprole. Further, the clustered regularly interspaced palindromic repeats (CRISPR) / CRISPR-associated protein 9-mediated genome-modified flies were used to study the contribution of RyR mutations to tetraniliprole resistance. The order of contribution of a single RyR mutation to tetraniliprole resistance was Y4667D > G4915E > Y4667C ≈ I4758M > Y4891F. In addition, the I4758M and Y4667C double mutations conferred higher tetraniliprole resistance than single Y4667C mutations. These results can guide resistance management practices for diamides in RSB and other arthropods.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Cytokinin oxidase/dehydrogenase (CKX) plays a vital role in response to abiotic stress through modulating the antioxidant enzyme activities. Nevertheless, the biological function of the CKX gene family has yet to be reported in cotton. RESULT: In this study, a total of 27 GhCKXs were identified by the genome-wide investigation and distributed across 18 chromosomes. Phylogenetic tree analysis revealed that CKX genes were clustered into four clades, and most gene expansions originated from segmental duplications. The CKXs gene structure and motif analysis displayed remarkably well conserved among the four groups. Moreover, the cis-acting elements related to the abiotic stress, hormones, and light response were identified within the promoter regions of GhCKXs. Transcriptome data and RT-qPCR showed that GhCKX genes demonstrated higher expression levels in various tissues and were involved in cotton's abiotic stress and phytohormone response. The protein-protein interaction network indicates that the CKX family probably participated in redox regulation, including oxidoreduction or ATP levels, to mediate plant growth and development. Functionally identified via virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS) found that the GhCKX14 gene improved drought resistance by modulating the antioxidant-related activitie. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, the CKX gene family members were analyzed by bioinformatics, and validates the response of GhCKX gene to various phytohormone treatment and abiotic stresses. Our findings established the foundation of GhCKXs in responding to abiotic stress and GhCKX14 in regulating drought resistance in cotton.

RESUMEN

Riparian soils in the lower sections of the Lhasa River were chosen as the research focus, to examine the characteristics and sources of heavy metals in riparian soils of high-cold regions. To investigate the influence of various factors on the geographical distribution of heavy metals, three horizontal and one vertical profiles were considered. The geoaccumulation index, prospective ecological risk index, and enrichment factor were used to evaluate the extent of soil contamination. Correlation analysis and the positive-matrix-analysis receptor model were used to quantitatively examine the sources of the elements. According to the soil-evaluation, the topsoil was more polluted than the deep soil. Overall, the soil was slightly degraded and posed minor ecological concern. Cd was the primary contributor to the overall contamination, with moderate and considerable risk levels at certain locations. Five sources were identified for the six heavy metals. Transportation and agricultural production were the principal sources of Cd. Ni and Cr were mostly connected to agricultural practices and weathering of parent-soil materials. Pb and Zn were mostly related to geological history, geothermal development, and traffic pollution. Mineral resource development has had a major impact on Cu. Non-carcinogenic risk index of each heavy metal and their total value were <1, indicating they are not harmful to human health. The riparian soil of the Lhasa River Basin contains heavy metals from various sources; therefore, it is important to monitor these heavy metals. This study provides a scientific foundation for the safe utilization and classification of soils in high cold regions.

RESUMEN

The Junggar Basin in Xinjiang is located in the hinterland of Eurasia, where the groundwater is a significant resource and has important ecological functions. The introduction of harmful organic pollutants into groundwater from increasing human activities and rapid socioeconomic development may lead to groundwater pollution at various levels. Therefore, to develop an effective regulatory framework, establishing a list of priority control organic pollutants (PCOPs) is in urgent need. In this study, a method of ranking the priority of pollutants based on their prevalence (Pv), occurrence (O) and persistent bioaccumulative toxicity (PBT) has been developed. PvOPBT in the environment was applied in the screening of PCOPs among 34 organic pollutants and the risk assessment of screened PCOPs in groundwater in the Junggar Basin. The results show that the PCOPs in groundwater were benzo[a]pyrene, 1,2-dichloroethane, trichloromethane and DDT. Among the pollutants, benzo[a]pyrene, 1,2-dichloroethane and DDT showed high potential ecological risk, whilst trichloromethane represented low potential ecological risk. With the exception of benzo[a]pyrene, which had high potential health risks, the other screened PCOPs had low potential health risks. Unlike the scatter distribution of groundwater benzo[a]pyrene, the 1,2-dichloroethane and trichloromethane in groundwater were mainly concentrated in the central part of the southern margin and the northern margin of the Junggar Basin, while the DDT in groundwater was only distributed in Jinghe County (in the southwest) and Beitun City (in the north). Industrial and agricultural activities were the main controlling factors that affected the distribution of PCOPs.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: At present, there are several diagnostic criteria of sarcopenia were used in China, and the diagnostic criteria were not unified. This study aims to investigate the consistency between the latest sarcopenia diagnostic criteria Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia(AWGS 2019) and other common diagnostic criteria. The changes of muscle mass, muscle strength and physical function with age and their effects on the diagnosis of sarcopenia were also analyzed. METHODS: A total of 1009 men aged ≥60 years were enrolled from multiple communities. Skeletal muscle mass index, grip strength and 6 m gait speed were measured. The consistency of AWGS 2019 with other diagnostic criteria was analyzed and the trends of these three indicators were observed. The differences of muscle mass, muscle strength and function among different diagnostic criteria and age groups were evaluated. In addition, the change trends of these three indicators with age were observed. RESULTS: According to AWGS 2019 diagnostic criteria, the incidence of sarcopenia in male aged 60-69 years, 70-79 years and over 80 years was 1.5%, 9.6% and 33.1%, respectively. AWGS 2019 was highly consistent with other diagnostic criteria (Kappa = 0.66-0.80, P < 0.01), except the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health(FNIH) (Kappa = 0.32, P < 0.01). When AWGSA2019 diagnostic criteria are applied, the prevalence of decreased muscle strength (39.1%) and physical function (46.4%) was significantly higher than that of low muscle mass (35.9%) in the men over 80 years old. Muscle strength (P < 0.01) and function (P < 0.01) decreased at the same rate with age, both of which were more significant than muscle mass (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: AWGS 2019 was highly consistent with other criteria. Maintaining muscle mass should be the focus of attention before age 80, while improving muscle strength and function should be focused after age 80 to prevent disability.

RESUMEN

A facile cotton fabric with a built-in TLC-SERS structure was fabricated to demonstrate an integrated TLC separation and SERS identification of mixed dyes. The soft and flexible SERS fabric was firstly fabricated using a simple method in which gold nanoparticles were in-situ synthesized on cotton fabrics by heating. ß-CD was then grafted onto cotton fabric through crosslinking with citric acid in presence of sodium hypophosphite monohydrate via esterification reaction. The adsorption and TLC development performance of ß-CD grafted fabrics were comprehensively investigated with two organic dyes, one anionic dye and one nonionic dye. Besides, the recyclable adsorption and separation performance were tested to evaluate its sustainable application prospects. It displayed less adsorption capacity loss and reusable separation performance after several cycles than the pristine cotton fabrics. Finally, two sets of mixed dyes were successfully separated on the TLC fabrics and then identified via on-site SERS according to their different migration distance. The developed TLC-SERS fabric shows the advantage of quick, easy to handle, low-cost, sensitive, and could be exploited in on-site study of synthetic dyes in art objects, textile and packaging products or forensic applications.
