INTRODUCTION: Big data optimization (Big-Opt) problems present unique challenges in effectively managing and optimizing the analytical properties inherent in large-scale datasets. The complexity and size of these problems render traditional data processing methods insufficient. OBJECTIVES: In this study, we propose a new multi-objective optimization algorithm called the multi-objective African vulture optimization algorithm with binary hierarchical structure and tree topology (MO_Tree_BHSAVOA) to solve Big-Opt problem. METHODS: In MO_Tree_BHSAVOA, a binary hierarchical structure (BHS) is incorporated to effectively balance exploration and exploitation capabilities within the algorithm; shift density estimation is introduced as a mechanism for providing selection pressure for population evolution; and a tree topology is employed to reinforce the algorithm's ability to escape local optima and preserve optimal non-dominated solutions. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated using CEC 2020 multi-modal multi-objective benchmark functions and CEC 2021 real-world constrained multi-objective optimization problems and is applied to Big-Opt problems. RESULTS: The performance is analyzed by comparing the results obtained with other multi-objective optimization algorithms and using Friedman's statistical test. The results show that the proposed MO_Tree_BHSAVOA not only provides very competitive results, but also outperforms other algorithms. CONCLUSION: These findings validate the effectiveness and potential applicability of MO_Tree_BHSAVOA in addressing the optimization challenges associated with big data.

Feature selection aims to select crucial features to improve classification accuracy in machine learning and data mining. In this paper, a new binary grasshopper optimization algorithm using time-varying Gaussian transfer functions (BGOA-TVG) is proposed for feature selection. Compared with the traditional S-shaped and V-shaped transfer functions, the proposed Gaussian time-varying transfer functions have the characteristics of a fast convergence speed and a strong global search capability to convert a continuous search space to a binary one. The BGOA-TVG is tested and compared to S-shaped and V-shaped binary grasshopper optimization algorithms and five state-of-the-art swarm intelligence algorithms for feature selection. The experimental results show that the BGOA-TVG has better performance in UCI, DEAP, and EPILEPSY datasets for feature selection.

For the classical multi-objective optimal power flow (MOOPF) problem, only traditional thermal power generators are used in power systems. However, there is an increasing interest in renewable energy sources and the MOOPF problem using wind and solar energy has been raised to replace part of the thermal generators in the system with wind turbines and solar photovoltaics (PV) generators. The optimization objectives of MOOPF with renewable energy sources vary with the study case. They are mainly a combination of 2-4 objectives from fuel cost, emissions, power loss and voltage deviation (VD). In addition, reasonable prediction of renewable power is a major difficulty due to the discontinuous, disordered and unstable nature of renewable energy. In this paper, the Weibull probability distribution function (PDF) and lognormal PDF are applied to evaluate the available wind and available solar power, respectively. In this paper, an enhanced multi-objective mayfly algorithm (NSMA-SF) based on non-dominated sorting and the superiority of feasible solutions is implemented to tackle the MOOPF problem with wind and solar energy. The algorithm NSMA-SF is applied to the modified IEEE-30 and standard IEEE-57 bus test systems. The simulation results are analyzed and compared with the recently reported MOOPF results.

With the wide application of mobile robots, mobile robot path planning (MRPP) has attracted the attention of scholars, and many metaheuristic algorithms have been used to solve MRPP. Swarm-based algorithms are suitable for solving MRPP due to their population-based computational approach. Hence, this paper utilizes the Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA) to address the problem, aiming to improve the solution accuracy. Whale optimization algorithm (WOA) is an algorithm that imitates whale foraging behavior, and the firefly algorithm (FA) is an algorithm that imitates firefly behavior. This paper proposes a hybrid firefly-whale optimization algorithm (FWOA) based on multi-population and opposite-based learning using the above algorithms. This algorithm can quickly find the optimal path in the complex mobile robot working environment and can balance exploitation and exploration. In order to verify the FWOA's performance, 23 benchmark functions have been used to test the FWOA, and they are used to optimize the MRPP. The FWOA is compared with ten other classical metaheuristic algorithms. The results clearly highlight the remarkable performance of the Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA) in terms of convergence speed and exploration capability, surpassing other algorithms. Consequently, when compared to the most advanced metaheuristic algorithm, FWOA proves to be a strong competitor.

The slime mould algorithm (SMA) is a new swarm intelligence algorithm inspired by the oscillatory behavior of slime moulds during foraging. Numerous researchers have widely applied the SMA and its variants in various domains in the field and proved its value by conducting various literatures. In this paper, a comprehensive review of the SMA is introduced, which is based on 130 articles obtained from Google Scholar between 2022 and 2023. In this study, firstly, the SMA theory is described. Secondly, the improved SMA variants are provided and categorized according to the approach used to apply them. Finally, we also discuss the main applications domains of the SMA, such as engineering optimization, energy optimization, machine learning, network, scheduling optimization, and image segmentation. This review presents some research suggestions for researchers interested in this algorithm, such as conducting additional research on multi-objective and discrete SMAs and extending this to neural networks and extreme learning machining.

In this paper, a new hybrid Manta Ray Foraging Optimization (MRFO) with Cuckoo Search (CS) algorithm (AMRFOCS) is proposed. Firstly, quantum bit Bloch spherical coordinate coding is used for the initialization of the population, which improves the diversity of the expansion of the traversal ability of the search space. Secondly, the dynamic disturbance factor is introduced to balance the exploratory and exploitative search ability of the algorithm. Finally, the unique nesting strategy of the cuckoo and Levy flight is introduced to enhance the search ability. AMRFOCS is tested on CEC2017 and CEC2020 benchmark functions, which is also compared and tested by using different dimensions and other state-of-the-art metaheuristic algorithms. Experimental results reveal that the AMRFOCS algorithm has a superior convergence rate and optimization precision. At the same time, the nonparametric Wilcoxon signed-rank test and Friedman test show that the AMRFOCS has good stability and superiority. In addition, the proposed AMRFOCS is applied to the three-dimensional WSN coverage problem. Compared with the other four 3D deployment methods optimized by metaheuristic algorithms, the AMRFOCS effectively reduces the redundancy of sensor nodes, possesses a faster convergence speed and higher coverage and then provides a more effective and practical deployment scheme.

Introduction: Extreme learning machine (ELM) is a training algorithm for single hidden layer feedforward neural network (SLFN), which converges much faster than traditional methods and yields promising performance. However, the ELM also has some shortcomings, such as structure selection, overfitting and low generalization performance. Methods: This article a new functional neuron (FN) model is proposed, we takes functional neurons as the basic unit, and uses functional equation solving theory to guide the modeling process of FELM, a new functional extreme learning machine (FELM) model theory is proposed. Results: The FELM implements learning by adjusting the coefficients of the basis function in neurons. At the same time, a simple, iterative-free and high-precision fast parameter learning algorithm is proposed. Discussion: The standard data sets UCI and StatLib are selected for regression problems, and compared with the ELM, support vector machine (SVM) and other algorithms, the experimental results show that the FELM achieves better performance.

In this paper, the multi-objective optimal power flow (MOOPF) problem optimization objectives focus on four optimization objectives: generation cost, emission, real power loss and voltage deviation (VD). Three renewable energy sources with successful industrial applications, including wind energy, solar energy, and tidal energy are introduced. Renewable energy supply is uncertain, so Weibull distribution probability, lognormal probability and Gumbel probability are used to calculate the instability and intermittency of wind energy, solar energy and tidal energy, respectively. The inclusion of four energy supplies on the IEEE-30 test system and the consideration of renewable energy reserves and penalty cost calculation improve the realism of the model. In order to obtain the control parameters that minimize the four optimization objectives, a named multi-objective pathfinder algorithm (MOPFA) based on elite dominance and crowding distance was proposed to solve this multi-objective optimization problem. Simulation results show the feasibility of the model, and MOPFA can get more evenly distributed Pareto front and provide more diverse solutions. A compromise solution was selected by the fuzzy decision system. Comparison with the recently published literature also shows that the proposed model can effectively reduce emissions and other indicators. In addition, the statistical test results show that MOPFA's multi-objective optimization performance ranks first. In solving this complex optimization problem, results show the MOPFA is superior to other multi-objective algorithms in optimization accuracy and speed.

Introduction: The development of the Internet has made life much more convenient, but forms of network intrusion have become increasingly diversified and the threats to network security are becoming much more serious. Therefore, research into intrusion detection has become very important for network security. Methods: In this paper, a clustering algorithm based on the symbiotic-organism search (SOS) algorithm and a Kohonen neural network is proposed. Results: The clustering accuracy of the Kohonen neural network is improved by using the SOS algorithm to optimize the weights in the Kohonen neural network. Discussion: Our approach was verified with the KDDCUP99 network intrusion data. The experimental results show that SOS-Kohonen can effectively detect intrusion. The detection rate was higher, and the false alarm rate was lower.

Although Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) can learn thousands of times faster than traditional slow gradient algorithms for training neural networks, ELM fitting accuracy is limited. This paper develops Functional Extreme Learning Machine (FELM), which is a novel regression and classifier. It takes functional neurons as the basic computing units and uses functional equation-solving theory to guide the modeling process of functional extreme learning machines. The functional neuron function of FELM is not fixed, and its learning process refers to the process of estimating or adjusting the coefficients. It follows the spirit of extreme learning and solves the generalized inverse of the hidden layer neuron output matrix through the principle of minimum error, without iterating to obtain the optimal hidden layer coefficients. To verify the performance of the proposed FELM, it is compared with ELM, OP-ELM, SVM and LSSVM on several synthetic datasets, XOR problem, benchmark regression and classification datasets. The experimental results show that although the proposed FELM has the same learning speed as ELM, its generalization performance and stability are better than ELM.

The vehicle routing problem with time windows (VRPTW) is a classical optimization problem. There have been many related studies in recent years. At present, many studies have generally analyzed this problem on the two-dimensional plane, and few studies have explored it on spherical surfaces. In order to carry out research related to the distribution of goods by unmanned vehicles and unmanned aerial vehicles, this study carries out research based on the situation of a three-dimensional sphere and proposes a three-dimensional spherical VRPTW model. All of the customer nodes in this problem were mapped to the three-dimensional sphere. The chimp optimization algorithm is an excellent intelligent optimization algorithm proposed recently, which has been successfully applied to solve various practical problems and has achieved good results. The chimp optimization algorithm (ChOA) is characterized by its excellent ability to balance exploration and exploitation in the optimization process so that the algorithm can search the solution space adaptively, which is closely related to its outstanding adaptive factors. However, the performance of the chimp optimization algorithm in solving discrete optimization problems still needs to be improved. Firstly, the convergence speed of the algorithm is fast at first, but it becomes slower and slower as the number of iterations increases. Therefore, this paper introduces the multiple-population strategy, genetic operators, and local search methods into the algorithm to improve its overall exploration ability and convergence speed so that the algorithm can quickly find solutions with higher accuracy. Secondly, the algorithm is not suitable for discrete problems. In conclusion, this paper proposes an improved chimp optimization algorithm (MG-ChOA) and applies it to solve the spherical VRPTW model. Finally, this paper analyzes the performance of this algorithm in a multi-dimensional way by comparing it with many excellent algorithms available at present. The experimental result shows that the proposed algorithm is effective and superior in solving the discrete problem of spherical VRPTW, and its performance is superior to that of other algorithms.

Clustering is an unsupervised learning technique widely used in the field of data mining and analysis. Clustering encompasses many specific methods, among which the K-means algorithm maintains the predominance of popularity with respect to its simplicity and efficiency. However, its efficiency is significantly influenced by the initial solution and it is susceptible to being stuck in a local optimum. To eliminate these deficiencies of K-means, this paper proposes a quantum-inspired moth-flame optimizer with an enhanced local search strategy (QLSMFO). Firstly, quantum double-chain encoding and quantum revolving gates are introduced in the initial phase of the algorithm, which can enrich the population diversity and efficiently improve the exploration ability. Second, an improved local search strategy on the basis of the Shuffled Frog Leaping Algorithm (SFLA) is implemented to boost the exploitation capability of the standard MFO. Finally, the poor solutions are updated using Levy flight to obtain a faster convergence rate. Ten well-known UCI benchmark test datasets dedicated to clustering are selected for testing the efficiency of QLSMFO algorithms and compared with the K-means and ten currently popular swarm intelligence algorithms. Meanwhile, the Wilcoxon rank-sum test and Friedman test are utilized to evaluate the effect of QLSMFO. The simulation experimental results demonstrate that QLSMFO significantly outperforms other algorithms with respect to precision, convergence speed, and stability.

The vehicle routing problem (VRP) problem is a classic NP-hard problem. Usually, the traditional optimization method cannot effectively solve the VRP problem. Metaheuristic optimization algorithms have been successfully applied to solve many complex engineering optimization problems. This paper proposes a discrete Harris Hawks optimization (DHHO) algorithm to solve the shared electric vehicle scheduling (SEVS) problem considering the charging schedule. The SEVS model is a variant of the VPR problem, and the influence of the transfer function on the model is analyzed. The experimental test data are based on three randomly generated examples of different scales. The experimental results verify the effectiveness of the proposed DHHO algorithm. Furthermore, the statistical analysis results show that other transfer functions have apparent differences in the robustness and solution accuracy of the algorithm.

In order to solve the inverse kinematics (IK) of complex manipulators efficiently, a hybrid equilibrium optimizer slime mould algorithm (EOSMA) is proposed. Firstly, the concentration update operator of the equilibrium optimizer is used to guide the anisotropic search of the slime mould algorithm to improve the search efficiency. Then, the greedy strategy is used to update the individual and global historical optimal to accelerate the algorithm's convergence. Finally, the random difference mutation operator is added to EOSMA to increase the probability of escaping from the local optimum. On this basis, a multi-objective EOSMA (MOEOSMA) is proposed. Then, EOSMA and MOEOSMA are applied to the IK of the 7 degrees of freedom manipulator in two scenarios and compared with 15 single-objective and 9 multi-objective algorithms. The results show that EOSMA has higher accuracy and shorter computation time than previous studies. In two scenarios, the average convergence accuracy of EOSMA is 10e-17 and 10e-18, and the average solution time is 0.05 s and 0.36 s, respectively.

The slime mould algorithm (SMA) is a metaheuristic algorithm recently proposed, which is inspired by the oscillations of slime mould. Similar to other algorithms, SMA also has some disadvantages such as insufficient balance between exploration and exploitation, and easy to fall into local optimum. This paper, an improved SMA based on dominant swarm with adaptive t-distribution mutation (DTSMA) is proposed. In DTSMA, the dominant swarm is used improved the SMA's convergence speed, and the adaptive t-distribution mutation balances is used enhanced the exploration and exploitation ability. In addition, a new exploitation mechanism is hybridized to increase the diversity of populations. The performances of DTSMA are verified on CEC2019 functions and eight engineering design problems. The results show that for the CEC2019 functions, the DTSMA performances are best; for the engineering problems, DTSMA obtains better results than SMA and many algorithms in the literature when the constraints are satisfied. Furthermore, DTSMA is used to solve the inverse kinematics problem for a 7-DOF robot manipulator. The overall results show that DTSMA has a strong optimization ability. Therefore, the DTSMA is a promising metaheuristic optimization for global optimization problems.

Mayfly algorithm (MA) is a bioinspired algorithm based on population proposed in recent years and has been applied to many engineering problems successfully. However, it has too many parameters, which makes it difficult to set and adjust a set of appropriate parameters for different problems. In order to avoid adjusting parameters, a bioinspired bare bones mayfly algorithm (BBMA) is proposed. The BBMA adopts Gaussian distribution and Lévy flight, which improves the convergence speed and accuracy of the algorithm and makes better exploration and exploitation of the search region. The minimum spanning tree (MST) problem is a classic combinatorial optimization problem. This study provides a mathematical model for solving a variant of the MST problem, in which all points and solutions are on a sphere. Finally, the BBMA is used to solve the large-scale spherical MST problems. By comparing and analyzing the results of BBMA and other swarm intelligence algorithms in sixteen scales, the experimental results illustrate that the proposed algorithm is superior to other algorithms for the MST problems on a sphere.

Since the meta-heuristic water cycle algorithm (WCA) was presented, it has been used extensively in scientific computation and engineering optimization. The aims of this study are to improve the exploration and exploitation capabilities of the WCA algorithm, accelerate its convergence speed, and enhance its calculation accuracy. In this paper, a novel complex-valued encoding WCA (CWCA) is proposed. The positions of rivers and streams are divided into two parts, that is, the real part and imaginary part, and modified formulas for the new positions of rivers and streams are proposed. To evaluate the performance of the CWCA, 12 benchmark functions and four engineering examples were considered. The experimental results indicated that the CWCA had higher precision and convergence speed than the real-valued WCA and other well-known meta-heuristic algorithms.

Feature selection (FS) is a classic and challenging optimization task in the field of machine learning and data mining. Gradient-based optimizer (GBO) is a recently developed metaheuristic with population-based characteristics inspired by gradient-based Newton's method that uses two main operators: the gradient search rule (GSR), the local escape operator (LEO) and a set of vectors to explore the search space for solving continuous problems. This article presents a binary GBO (BGBO) algorithm and for feature selecting problems. The eight independent GBO variants are proposed, and eight transfer functions divided into two families of S-shaped and V-shaped are evaluated to map the search space to a discrete space of research. To verify the performance of the proposed binary GBO algorithm, 18 well-known UCI datasets and 10 high-dimensional datasets are tested and compared with other advanced FS methods. The experimental results show that among the proposed binary GBO algorithms has the best comprehensive performance and has better performance than other well known metaheuristic algorithms in terms of the performance measures.

Symbiotic organisms search (SOS) is a new robust and powerful metaheuristic algorithm, which stimulates the symbiotic interaction strategies adopted by organisms to survive and propagate in the ecosystem. In the supervised learning area, it is a challenging task to present a satisfactory and efficient training algorithm for feedforward neural networks (FNNs). In this paper, SOS is employed as a new method for training FNNs. To investigate the performance of the aforementioned method, eight different datasets selected from the UCI machine learning repository are employed for experiment and the results are compared among seven metaheuristic algorithms. The results show that SOS performs better than other algorithms for training FNNs in terms of converging speed. It is also proven that an FNN trained by the method of SOS has better accuracy than most algorithms compared.

OBJECTIVE: To identify the hexavalent chromium reduction Cr4-1, and to study the better conditions of the bacterial growth and its Cr(VI) reduction. METHODS: The physiological and biochemical methods and 16s rDNA sequencing were used for identification of bacteria Cr4-1. The influence of temperature, pH, initial Cr (VI) concentration and shaking speed on bacterial growth and Cr (VI) reduction were studied. Mass balance analysis was used to analyze the end products of the reduction reaction. RESULTS: A Cr(VI) reducing bacteria Cr4-1, screened from acclimated activated sludge, was identified as Bacillus cereus. The appropriate conditions of bacterial growth was 25 °C, pH 7 to 8, shaking speed 150 r/min, while the suitable conditions for Cr(VI) reduction was 35 °C, pH 8 to 9. When the initial Cr(VI) concentration increased from 20 mg/L to 60 mg/L, the reduction rate decreased gradually. Under the suitable reducing conditions, when the initial concentration of Cr (VI) was 30 mg/L, the reduction rate could up to 100% in 9 h. The end product was soluble trivalent chromium. CONCLUSION: Strain Cr4-1 had a good effect on Cr (VI) reduction and the final product was soluble trivalent chromium.
