RESUMEN

Hunter syndrome (MPS II), an X-linked recessive lysosomal storage disorder, is a result of deficiency of the iduronate 2-sulfatase enzyme (IDS), leading to cognitive impairment, systemic organ involvement, and increased dental problems. This case report describes the management of a child with Hunter syndrome who was referred to the Department of Paediatric and Preventive Dentistry for pain in the upper front teeth. Intraoral examination revealed severe early childhood caries, prompting planning for full-mouth rehabilitation under general anaesthesia due to the child's uncooperative behaviour. In response to recommendations from the Department of Otolaryngology and the Department of Paediatric Surgery, a comprehensive treatment plan consolidated full-mouth rehabilitation in addition to adenoidectomy and inguinal and umbilical herniotomy procedures during a single session of general anaesthesia. Successful interventions were reflected in the uneventful one-month follow-up of the patient, highlighting the efficacy of the interdisciplinary approach. The key takeaway underscores the importance of collaborative interventions, emphasising singular intubation for patients requiring recurrent hospitalisations, providing both monetary relief and reducing post operative healing time. Designed to address global developmental delay in the child, a personalised home care plan was also implemented. Evaluation of plaque and gingival indices before and after the home care regimen demonstrated a notable improvement, indicating an enhanced oral quality of life.

Underneath the ignorance of adverse oral habits and general health practices in children proved to fetch harm, lies the basis and the motive in carrying out this study. This survey screened a total of 2636 children between the age group 4 and 15 years, residing in areas in South Kanara district and the prevalence of the adverse habits were assessed using a questionnaire and clinical examination. 526 students (19.95%) were found to be victims of adverse oral habits with nail biting being the most prevalent habit and bruxism, the least. Though the overall percentage of knowledge on basic body cleanliness was good, a small fraction weren't aware, thus posing the necessity of educating children right from home and school and thus ensuring that the health of ones child is safe and secure.

It is widely accepted that all foods containing "fermentable carbohydrates" have the potential to contribute to caries formation. Fermentable carbohydrates are present in most starches and all sugars, including those that occur naturally in foods and those added in processed foods. The relative cariogenicity of chocolates is dependent on their composition, texture, solubility, retentiveness and ability to stimulate salivary flow. The composition of the chocolates has profound impact on its cariogenic potential. There are a wide range of chocolates available in the market and very few studies have compared the chocolates available in the Indian market. This study was an in vivo study done on 30 dental volunteers where the cariogenicity between filled and unfilled chocolates were compared by evaluating the pH of plaque at different time intervals taken at baseline and at 5, 10, 15, 20 and 30 minutes using a pH meter. In unfilled group, milk chocolate had maximum pH drop at 20 minutes (5.895) and diet chocolate had minimum pH drop at 10 minutes (6.143). In filled group, fruit and nut had maximum pH drop at 20 minutes (5.713) and caramel had minimum pH drop at 15 minutes (5.817). The results between unfilled and filled chocolate were found to be statistically significant between 15-30 minutes (p < 0.0005) and suggestive that filled chocolates were more cariogenic than unfilled chocolates.

RESUMEN

The lure of convenience in addition to good taste gets people to junk food addiction. With the advent of television even in the remotest areas people have become more aware of the fast food items available. Children watch television where fast food continues to dominate the food advertisements viewed by children. The easily available fast food in and around school campus and with little knowledge of the far reaching effects of these food items consumed, children fall an easy prey to junk food. Children are unaware of the food they eat and the effects it has on their growth and development. This survey reflects the large percentageof children who surrender to the temptation junk food consumption with little knowledge of its far sighted effects on their health.
