Background: Dentists utilize various techniques and materials for post and core restoration of endodontically treated teeth, which remains a noteworthy health concern and can be addressed through interdisciplinary strategies to enhance outcomes. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the technical quality of the residual gutta-percha (GP) and posts by analysing the periapical radiographs of endodontically restored teeth. Methods: A total of 594 periapical digital radiographs were evaluated for tooth type, post material, post shape, design, diameter, length, residual GP, GP length, GP tapering, GP homogeneity, and final restoration. Frequency distribution and cross-tabulation of the variables were performed. Results: Maxillary molars had the highest frequency of restorations, including posts, accounting for 27.4 %, followed by maxillary premolars (25.4 %) and maxillary anterior teeth (19.2 %). The prefabricated metallic posts were most commonly used (81.0 %), among these, 50.4 % were screwed posts. Tapered posts were the most commonly used (65.6 %). The percentage of posts with an acceptable length was 58.2 %. The most commonly used posts exhibited a width of one-third of the root diameter, accounting for 87.0 %. Suitable GP lengths were observed in 61.1 % of the restorations, and 62.8 % demonstrated adequate GP homogeneity. The findings of this study revealed that crown restoration accounted for 42.6 % of the studied sample. Conclusions: The technical quality of the remaining GP after restoration was comparable to that of previous epidemiological investigations. However, the technical quality of the post was deemed suboptimal.

OBJECTIVES: When dental practitioners encounter a defective restoration, they are faced with a crucial decision whether to repair or replace it. This study aims to explore international preferences for repair procedures and the clinical steps taken during the repair process. METHOD: An 11-question survey was distributed to dentists across 21 countries via different platforms. The survey comprised two sections: the first included five questions aimed at gathering demographic information, while the second consisted of six questions focusing on participants' practices related to the repair of composite or amalgam restorations A meta-analysis was employed to ascertain the pooled odds ratio of repairing versus replacement. The statistical analysis was carried out using the RevMan 5.3 program and forest plots were generated using the same program to visualize the results. RESULTS: The survey was completed by 3680 dental practitioners. The results indicated a strong tendency to repair defective composite restorations (OR: 14.23; 95% CI: 7.40, 27.35, p<0.001). In terms of amalgam, there was a significant tendency to replace the restorations (OR: 0.19; 95% CI: 0.12, 0.30, p<0.001). When repairing restorations, the most common protocols were etching with orthophosphoric acid and creating an enamel bevel, regardless of the restorative material used. CONCLUSION: The findings of this study indicate that there exists a knowledge gap among dental practitioners regarding restoration repair. It is imperative that dental practitioners receive proper education and training on restoration repair, to ensure the usage of adequate protocols and restoration survival.

BACKGROUND: The educational process in the field of endodontics commences with preclinical exercises to enhance students' proficiency in cleaning, shaping, and performing root canal fillings. Therefore, this study aimed to radiographically evaluate the technical quality of root canal fillings performed by preclinical students on extracted teeth at the College of Dentistry, University of Ha'il, Saudi Arabia. METHODS: A total of 788 extracted human teeth received root canal treatment by undergraduate students. The samples were then gathered and radiographically assessed using the three quality criteria of length, density, and taper. The category of root canal fillings was classified as either acceptable or unacceptable. The criteria for evaluating the acceptability of filling quality were defined based on the presence of adequate length, density, and taper. The effectiveness of root canal fillings was also evaluated in relation to the tooth type, sex, and treatment year. The agreement between the examiners was evaluated using Cohen's kappa test, and the relationship between the research variables was determined using the chi-squared test. The significance threshold was set at 0. 05. RESULTS: The overall quality of root filling was determined to be satisfactory in 532 (67.5%) of 788 endodontically treated extracted teeth. The majority of the research sample (88.1%) had enough length, 89.6% had adequate density, and 86.4% had acceptable taper. The quality of anterior teeth was substantially better than that of posterior teeth (p < 0.001). Our findings showed that the quality of root canals was better in 2022 than it had been in earlier years (p = 0.001). The three RCT quality criteria differed significantly when compared between sexes (p = 0.002). CONCLUSIONS: The quality of the root canal fillings completed by undergraduate students was rated as acceptable. The findings of the research suggest that the implementation of routine assessments to evaluate the technical competence of undergraduate dental students performing root canal treatments could provide significant insights into the efficacy of the curriculum requirements.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the study was to determine the facial divergence and lip position combinations that are most and least preferred, and to investigate whether age or gender has an impact on these preferences. METHODS: The current investigation was carried out on a sample of 1077 individuals who were not experts in the field (253 men and 824 females). The research employed black silhouette photographs of profiles featuring different lip locations and profile divergences. The recruitment of participants was conducted in order to assess the attractiveness of the profiles, employing a Likert scale. The various positions of the lips and variations in facial profiles were thoroughly categorized. Results were analyzed using the Chi-square test. RESULTS: The findings of the research demonstrated that aesthetic perceptions displayed diversity when considering different lip locations and profile divergences. It was shown that neutral lip positions were predominantly favored, accounting for approximately 40.2% of the total frequencies in the anterior diverging group. It is noteworthy to highlight the aesthetically pleasing features exhibited by those with the most prominent lip position, occurring at a frequency of 10.9% in straight-diverging group. In the posterior divergent group, the most protruded lip position, showed very attractive aesthetics with frequency (7.1%). Gender, age, region, and level of education had significant influence on aesthetic perception. CONCLUSIONS: The variety of aesthetic preferences is influenced by the location of the lips and the divergence of the facial profile, resulting in different outcomes within the categories of anterior, straight, and posterior divergence. Clinicians are advised to customize the treatment regimen in order to correspond with the unique desires and preferences of the patient.

BACKGROUND: The present study aimed to examine the prevalence of radix entomolaris (RE) in the mandibular permanent molar within a specific sub-population in Saudi Arabia. METHODS: A comprehensive analysis was conducted on 499 cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans of a mandibular molar from a sample of Saudi patients aged between 18 and 65. The primary objective of this study was to investigate the anatomical characteristics of mandibular permanent molars, specifically focusing on the number of roots present. The chi-square test was employed to examine the relationship between various variables. RESULTS: In the case of mandibular first molars, it was observed that 95.3% of these molars exhibited a bifurcated root structure. In comparison, the remaining 4.7% displayed a triradicular configuration within the sample population under investigation. Although there were some variations, no significant differences in the number of roots were observed between males and females or left and right sides (p > 0.05). In the case of mandibular second molars, it was observed that 96.9% of them exhibited a bifurcated root structure, whereas 2.5% displayed a trifurcated root configuration, and a mere 0.6% possessed a single root. There were no statistically significant variations in the number of roots between males and females or left and right sides (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The identification of RE was observed in the mandibular molars. Moreover, the discovered RE roots were predominantly found in the mandibular first molar, displaying a tendency for bilateral occurrence in both male and female individuals.

OBJECTIVE:  In this work, the influence of glass fiber posts with different designs on the root stress that had endodontic treatment was examined using the finite element method. METHOD:  Using two distinct materials (metal and glass fiber) and two different prototypes (tapered and parallel-sided), four three-dimensional (3D) finite element models of an upper central incisor were made and studied. Each 3D model received an oblique loading of 100 N. All forces were dispatched as distributed pressure to the aforementioned region. There were no considerations made for potential stresses when performing the endodontic procedure. The endodontic treatment was conducted without taking into account any potential stressors. The root stresses were then recorded. RESULTS: The largest tensile stress is often focused at the apical third of the post and post/cement contact, as well as at the coronal third of the root on both the labial and palatal sides of the root, independent of the post's design and material. Restoration of endodontically treated maxillary central incisors with glass fiber posts has been shown to have less stress concentration than titanium posts. Regardless of the post materials employed, the tapered post design generated a higher tensile stress distribution than the parallel side design. CONCLUSIONS:  Prefabricated fiber posts used in model restoration resulted in more evenly distributed stress and less concentrated stress on the root. Reduction in modulus of elasticity of post materials used generally shows less stress concentration.

Background: The goal of the present research was to employ CBCT imaging to assess the root and canal anatomy of maxillary second molars in a population from the Hail province of Saudi. The effects of gender and side were taken into account. Methods: The investigation included a sample size of 499 completely developed right and left untreated maxillary second molars obtained from 250 Saudi people. The root morphology of each tooth was evaluated. The examination also included an analysis of the canal morphology for each tooth, utilizing Vertucci's categorization. The effect of genders as well as sides was recorded. Results were analyzed using the Chi-square test. Results: 464 teeth had three roots (93.0%), whereas 20 teeth (4.0%) had two roots. One root was recorded in 7 (1.4%) of the study sample, whilst 8 (1.6%) had four roots. Although there were no significant differences between the left and right sides (p = .075), gender had a significant influence on the number of roots (p = .030). 240 M (48.1%) had three canal orifices, and 247 (49.5%) had four root canal orifices. Eight molars (1.6%) had two canal orifices, while one and five canal orifices were found in 3 (0.6%) and one (0.2%), respectively. Gender had a significant impact on the number of root canal orifices (p = .039). The observed differences in the orifices of the root canals between the left and right sides were not statistically significant (p = .059). The prevalence of MB2 in maxillary second molars was found to be 49.7%. In the mesiobuccal root, the Vertucci type I configuration had the highest canal frequency (50.3%), followed by the Vertucci types II (14.4%), IV (13.8%), V (12.0%), and III (7.6%), and VI (1.8%). The prevalence of Vertucci type I canal configurations was found to be higher in the distobuccal root (99.4%) and palatal root (98.2%) of maxillary second molars. Conclusions: Significant variations in root canal anatomy were observed within the Saudi population. The majority of the subjects from Saudi Arabia in this study exhibited the presence of maxillary second molars with three roots. Approximately half of the sample under investigation exhibited the presence of the four canals.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of khat extract on the color stability of five different provisional restorative materials (PRMs). METHODS: In this study, 50 specimens were fabricated from five different PRMs with different techniques. Twenty specimens were digitally fabricated of poly-methyl methacrylate (PMMA) CAD/CAM milling and 3D printing PRMs, while the other thirty specimens were manually fabricated of three different PRMs: PMMA self-cured (SC) acrylic resin, light-cured (LC) composite, and Bis-acrylic SC composite. Milling and 3D printing machines were used to fabricate the digital specimens, while the manual specimens were fabricated using a metallic mold. The material was placed in the mold, covered by a polyester stripe, and held between two glass slabs with a constant load for 30 s. After setting, the specimens were removed and checked. Ten disc-shaped specimens with 2 ± 0.3 mm thickness and 10 ± 0.3 mm diameter were prepared from each of the tested PRM. Then all the specimens were polished. Five specimens of each PRM were immersed in khat extract, while the other five were immersed in distilled water medium as a control group. The color measurements were recorded before and after 1 and 7 days of immersion using a spectrophotometer. The immersion media were renewed every 24 h and kept along with the specimens at 37 °C. The T test, paired T test, and ANOVA analysis of variance were used to analyze the results. The Bonferroni test was used for post-hoc multiple comparisons. RESULTS: The interaction between the tested PRMs, the media, and the duration of immersion time was statistically significant (p < 0.05). PMMA CAD/CAM milling PRM was the most stable in color, and this was statistically significant (p < 0.05). The LC composite PRM composite was the least stable in color and was statistically insignificant (p > 0.05) when compared to the 3D printing and Bis-acrylic SC composite PRMs, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated that khat extract medium has a high staining ability on the tested PRMs. CAD/CAM milling PRM was the most stable in color and could therefore be used as a long-term provisional. The increase in immersion time was a significant factor in the color change of the tested PRMs. The color of the 3D-printed PRM was the most affected over time.

AIM: The aim of this study was two-folded: i) to assess the prevalence of Distolingual Canal (DLC) and Radix Entomolaris (RE) in Mandibular First Molars (M1Ms), using Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) images and ii) to assess the impact of sociodemographic factors on the prevalence of these conditions worldwide. METHODS: CBCT images were scanned retrospectively and the ones including bilateral M1Ms were included in the study. The evaluation was performed by 1 researcher in each country, trained with CBCT technology. A written and video instruction program explaining the protocol to be followed step-by-step was provided to all observers to calibrate them. The CBCT imaging screening procedure consisted of evaluating axial sections from coronal to apical. The presence of DLC and RE in M1Ms (yes/no) was identified and recorded. RESULTS: Six thousand three hundred four CBCTs, representing 12,608 M1Ms, were evaluated. A significant difference was found between countries regarding the prevalence of both RE and DLC (P < .05). The prevalence of DLC ranged from 3% to 50%, and the overall prevalence was 22% (95% CI: 15%-29%). RE prevalence ranged from 0% to 12%, and the overall prevalence was 3% (95% CI: 2%-5%). There were no significant differences between left and right M1Ms or between genders for either DLC or RE (P > .05). CONCLUSION: The overall prevalence of RE and DLC in M1Ms was 3% and 22%. Additionally, both RE and DLC showed substantial bilaterally. These variations should be considered by endodontic clinicians during endodontic procedures in order to avoid potential complications.

BACKGROUND: Regenerative endodontics (RET) refers to biologically based procedures that aim to restore damaged tooth structures and reinstate the pulp-dentine complex to its normal physiological state. AIM: The purpose of this study was to examine the attitudes and practices of endodontists and paediatric dentists regarding RET. DESIGN: A survey was conducted among endodontists and paediatric dentists from 13 countries. A number of factors were evaluated, including frequency of RET application, followed guidelines, disinfection techniques, intracanal medication type, scaffold type, preferred coronal seal material, and follow-up period. RESULTS: Among the 1394 respondents, 853 (61.2%) and 541 (38.8%) were endodontists and paediatric dentists, respectively. Almost half (43%) of participants have not performed RET yet. The American Association of Endodontics guideline (47.3%) was selected as the primary source for the clinical protocol. The most frequently selected irrigant solution was 1.5%-3% NaOCl at the first (26.1%) and second (13.6%) sessions. A blood clot (68.7%) and MTA (61.9%) were the most frequently selected scaffold type and coronal barrier. Most participants preferred a 6-month follow-up period. CONCLUSION: According to this survey, deviations exist from current RET guidelines regarding all aspects evaluated. Standardizing clinical protocols and adhering to available guidelines would help to ensure more predictable outcomes.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to assess the association between different behavioral factors and the prevalence of dental caries among children attending the dental clinic in a sample from the Hail and Tabuk regions, Saudi Arabia. METHOD: A cross-sectional study design was employed to determine the burden of dental caries in teeth and key associated factors among 6-12-year-old children who attended different dental clinics. The data was recruited from Hail and Tabuk districts, Saudi Arabia. The study included only Saudi nationals, whose parents could fill out the self-administered questionnaire and provide informed consent for their child's dental examination at clinics. Children underwent a simple dental examination based on the World Health Organization diagnostic criteria for oral health surveys. The Decayed, Missed, Filled Tooth (DMFT) index developed by the World Health Organization (WHO) was utilized to assess dental caries. Descriptive statistics were performed to describe categorical variables. The mean DMFT was compared between girls' and boys' and the children from Hail and Tabuk regions using the Mann-Whitney U-test. The chi-square test was used to examine the association between different behavioral factors and the prevalence of dental caries. RESULTS: Of the total 399 children examined, 203 (50.9%) were boys, whilst 196 (49.1%) were girls. The prevalence of dental caries was correlated with the cleaning tool, parental educational level, dental visits, and sugar consumption (p < 0.05). However, brushing frequency failed to demonstrate a correlation with the prevalence of dental caries (p > 0.05). The total mean DMFT for the studied sample was 7.81 (SD ± 1.9). Caries' experience was made up mainly of decayed teeth. Decayed teeth made up an average of 3.30 (SD ± 1.07). The total mean of missing and filling teeth was 2.51 (SD ± 0.99) and 1.99 (SD ± 1.26) respectively. There was no statistically significant difference in the mean DMFT and gender or between Hail and Tabuk (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Saudi Arabia continues to have a high prevalence of dental caries compared to the global norm.

BACKGROUND: An additional canal found in the mandibular first molar (M1M) is the middle mesial canal (MMC), which is often missed during root canal treatment. In this study, the prevalence of MMC in M1M on cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images was evaluated in 15 countries, along with the effect of some demographic factors on its prevalence. METHODS: Deidentified CBCT images were scanned retrospectively, and the ones including bilateral M1Ms were included in the study. A written and video instruction program explaining the protocol to be followed step-by-step was provided to all observers to calibrate them. The CBCT imaging screening procedure consisted of evaluating three planes (coronal, sagittal, and axial) after a 3-dimensional alignment of the long axis of the root(s). The presence of an MMC in M1Ms (yes/no) was identified and recorded. RESULTS: In total, 6304 CBCTs, representing 12,608 M1Ms, were evaluated. A significant difference was found between countries (P < .05). MMC prevalence ranged from 1% to 23%, and the overall prevalence was 7% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 5%-9%). No significant differences were found between the left and right M1M (odds ratio = 1.09, 95% CI: 0.93, 1.27; P > .05) or between genders (odds ratio= 1.07, 95% CI: 0.91, 1.27; P > .05). As for the age groups, no significant differences were found (P > .05). CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of MMC varies by ethnicity, but it is generally estimated at 7% worldwide. Physicians must pay close attention to the presence of MMC in M1M, especially for opposite M1Ms, due to the prevalence of MMC being significantly bilateral.

BACKGROUND: The study's objective was to use CBCT to ascertain the root and root canal anatomy of the permanent maxillary first molars in a Yemeni population. It was considered how gender affected the prevalence of root canal morphology. METHODS: A sample of 373 CBCT records of maxillary permanent first molars belonging to 373 Yemeni individuals (162 males and 211 females) aged between 12 and 65 years were included in this study. Using CBCT on the teeth, the root form and canal morphology for each root based on Vertucci's classification were evaluated. The distribution of MB2 occurrence was documented. The prevalence and resemblance of the men and females were investigated. The Chi-square test was performed to evaluate the findings. RESULTS: Of the 373 maxillary first molars studied, the three separated root form was found in 94.9% of the studied MFMs while the two fused and one separate root form was found in 4.5%. The majority of the three-rooted MFMs (82.6%) had more than three root canals (four canals in 77.2% and five canals in 5.4%). The prevalence of MB2 was as high as 82.3% of the three-rooted MFMs. Vertucci type II configuration was the most frequent canal type (25%) followed by Vertucci type III (23.1%) and Vertucci type I (17.7%) in the mesiobuccal root. Vertucci type I was the most prevalent canal configuration in the distobuccal root and palatal root of the three-rooted MFMs (96% and 99.5%, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: The maxillary first molars' root canal morphology indicated notable variations among a Yemeni population. The maxillary first molars of most of the Yemeni participants in this study had three roots and four canals. In light of the high occurrence of MB2 (82.3%) in permanent maxillary first molars, our findings emphasize the need of searching for and using cutting-edge techniques to locate the MB2 canals. Males outnumbered females in proportion.

BACKGROUND: The objective of the study was to retrospectively assess the clinical performance of dental prostheses, single crowns, and three-unit bridges to identify clinical biological and mechanical complications in the Ha'il province of Saudi Arabia. METHODS: The study was conducted between March 2021 to October 2021 and included 421 patients who underwent crown and tooth-supported fixed partial denture (FPD) procedures at the Dental Polyclinics Center in the Ha'il region of Saudi Arabia from 2010-2020. The planned sampling approach was applied. Patients who underwent crown and FPD placements at the dental center within the scheduled period were identified through clinical assessments. The inclusion criteria were met by patients with three-unit FPDs and a single crown containing a natural contralateral tooth or teeth. A total of six general dentists conducted clinical exams. Patient satisfaction and technical and biological issues were the evaluation criteria for crowns and FPDs. The frequency and percentage of the various characteristics employed in the current investigation were ascertained using cross-tabulation. The Chi-square test was employed to assess the associations between categorical variables, with p-values ≤ 0.05 considered significant.  Results: Marginal integrity was recorded in 332 participants (78.9%), which was satisfactory for the majority of the restoration. The acceptance morphology was present in 252 (59.9%) restorations. The highest rate of the restorations 274 (66.2%) had satisfactory color. In 86 cases (20.4%), there was visible periodontal depth of at least 5 mm. Three hundred and six (72.7%) of the fixed restorations had gingival bleeding connected to them, and 96 (22.8%) teeth had periapical lesions. A total of 311 patients (73.9%) reported they were satisfied with their fixed restorations. CONCLUSIONS: The technical and biological complications noted in the current study were not higher compared with other studies of crowns and fixed dental prostheses. The majority of patients were satisfied with the restoration.

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to evaluate the knowledge, and awareness of dentists in Ha'il, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, regarding the use of endocrown as post-endodontic restorations, utilizing an online questionnaire. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out among dental practitioners working in Ha'il, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Dentists who practice in the Ha'il were included in the current study. The survey study involved a sample size of 245 participants. The researchers employed the snowball sampling technique in this investigation. The validated, closed-ended questionnaires were disseminated to the entire sample of selected dental practitioners using electronic mail. The initial section of the survey encompassed inquiries pertaining to the demographic characteristics of the participants, encompassing variables such as gender, years of professional experience, and workplace. The subsequent section of the survey focused on assessing the participants' knowledge and opinions regarding the endocrown technique. The Chi-square test was employed to assess the associations between categorical variables. RESULTS: The most of participants 228 (93.1%) had knowledge about endocrown and 94 (38.4%) of them received information from their educational institutions. Among the responses of the participants, 232 (94.7%) expressed their preference for utilizing endocrown restorations specifically for molar teeth. Moreover, 183 (74.7%) of respondents indicated that the endocrown is preferred when there is a restricted amount of inter-arch space available. A majority of respondents 152 (62.0%) indicated that the ferrule does not exert any influence on the endocrown. A majority of participants 135 (55.1%) expressed a preference for utilizing lithium disilicate ceramic in the fabrication of endocrown. The most of participants 209 (85.3%) opted to use resin cement for the purpose of cementation. The characteristics of gender, experience, and working place were found to have a significant relationship with the knowledge of the participants about endocrown (p <0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The study participants need to enhance their knowledge and awareness pertaining to the utilization of endocrowns as a post-endodontic treatment.

BACKGROUND: The study's goal was to use Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) to assess the root and root canal anatomy of mandibular second molars with C-shaped root canal configurations in residents of the Hail district. The impact of gender and side on the frequency of root canal morphology was considered. METHODS: The sample size for this study was 304 untreated mandibular second molars with completely developed roots on the right and left sides. Using CBCT on the teeth, the root form and canal morphology for each root are based on Vertucci's classification. The occurrence of canals in the shape of a C. The prevalence and resemblance of the left and right sides or men and females were investigated. The Chi-square test was performed to evaluate the findings. RESULTS: Of the 304 mandibular second molars studied, 286 teeth had two roots (94.1%), whilst 13 (4.3%) were C-shaped root canal systems. 77 molars (25.3%) had two canal orifices, 219 (72.0%) had three canal orifices, and six (2.0%) and one (0.3%) had four and five root canal orifices, respectively. Type IV was the most common for mesial root, accounting for 57.7% of the sample (n = 176). For distal root, the most common occurrence was type I, which occurred 282 times (96.60%). The most prevalent root canal morphology was the presence of two canals in the mesial root and one canal in the distal root of teeth with two distinct roots (variant 3). (69.4%). The overall prevalence of C-shaped root canal systems is (4.3%) (n = 13). CONCLUSIONS: The patient's race is an undeniable factor that influences root canal anatomy. The root canal morphology of mandibular second molars revealed significant differences between Saudi subpopulations. The majority of mandibular second molars had two roots and three root canals. When treating these molars, the presence of a C-shaped root canal system must be taken into account.

Objectives: The efficacy of root canal therapy is dependent on a thorough understanding of both normal and aberrant root canal morphology. As a result, the purpose of this study was to use CBCT to characterize the exact root and canal morphology of mandibular premolars in a Saudi subpopulation. Methods: The current study included 1000 mandibular premolars (507 first premolars and 493 second premolars) with completely developed roots. CBCT was performed to assess the shape of the roots and to classify the canal anatomy according to Vertucci's classification. The incidence and similarity of the left and right sides, as well as men and women, were investigated. The data were examined using the chi-square test. Results: Of the 507 mandibular first premolars analyzed, 484 (95.5%) had one root, whereas 23 (4.5%) had two roots. Of the 493 mandibular second premolars analyzed, 489 (99.2%) had one root, whereas four teeth had two roots (0.8%). There were no statistically significant variations in the number of roots identified across groups (p > 0.05). The most prevalent in mandibular first premolars was type I, accounting for 70.0% (n = 355) of the studied sample, followed by type II (14.2%, n = 72) and type IV (10.1%, n = 51). For mandibular second premolar, type I had the highest incidence (449 (91.1%)), followed by type II (5.7%, n = 28). Conclusion: In a Saudi subpopulation, the majority of mandibular first and second premolar teeth had a single root with a type I canal system. On the other hand, numerous roots with various canal classifications were found.

BACKGROUND: Optimum oral health is impossible to achieve without managing dental caries. The first step to manage dental caries at a community level is to know its prevalence and trend. Unfortunately, the prevalence of dental caries at the national/regional level is not known in many developing countries. Pakistan is no exception. The present meta-analysis was planned to document the prevalence of dental caries at the national, as well as regional level. This paper will serve as a baseline for making future health policies, and health promotion activities in the country. METHODS: Literature was searched through various databases, such as PubMed, SCOPUS, and Web of science using: "Prevalence", "Dental Caries", "Dental Decay" and "Severity" as keywords. Any study that reported the prevalence of dental caries, and was conducted in the Pakistani population was included. Thirty studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Quality assessment of all the included studies was performed using Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) critical appraisal checklist for prevalence studies. MedCalc software was used to analyze the data. RESULTS: In total 27,878 subjects were included in a meta-analysis from 30 studies. The prevalence estimate of dental caries at the national level was 56.62% (95% CI: 49.54 to 63.57). The I2 value was 99.07% (95% CI: 98.94 to 99.18), (I2 > 75%) indicating heterogeneity, hence pooled proportion was reported using a random-effect model. The prevalence estimate of dental caries in Sindh was 58.946% (95% CI: 43.796 to 73.274), and in Punjab, it was 55.445% (95% CI: 44.174 to 66.44), whilst in Baluchistan and KPK combined was 51.168% (95% CI: 22.930 to 79.004). CONCLUSION: Based on the existing data nearly 60% of the Pakistani population have dental caries. The proportion is almost the same in all provinces. Most of the included studies were found to be of high risk.

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to use CBCT to look into the root canal morphology of maxillary premolars in a Saudi Arabian subpopulation and associate the results to existing canal morphology classifications. METHODS: The sample size for this analysis was 500 right and left untreated maxillary first and second premolars with fully formed roots from 250 Saudi residents (125 male and 125 female). The following observations were made using CBCT on the teeth related: (1) The number and morphology of roots; (2) The canal morphology for each root according to Vertucci's classification. The frequency and similarities between the right and left sides, as well as between females and males, were studied. The Chi-square test was used to assess the results. RESULTS: Of the 500 maxillary first premolars studied, 199 teeth had one root (39.8%), whilst 293 (58.6%) were two-rooted. Three-rooted maxillary first premolars were found in 8 (1.6%). For maxillary second premolars, 416 premolars had one root (83.2%), whilst 79 (15.8%) had two roots and the rest 5 (1.0%) were three roots. There were significant differences of number of root were found between groups (p > 0.05). For maxillary first premolar, Type IV was the most frequent, accounting for 57.8% of the sample (n = 289), followed by type II (32.8%, n = 164). For maxillary second premolar, Type I was mainly occurrence 302 (60.4%), followed by Type II (16.4%, n = 82). CONCLUSIONS: The majority of maxillary first premolars had two roots and two root canals, while one root and one root canal was the most common anatomical configuration for maxillary second premolars. Additional canal forms do occur on occasion, and clinicians should pay close attention to them.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify and characterize root and canal morphology and the prevalence of C-shaped canals of mandibular second molars (MSMs) in a Yemeni population using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). METHODS: Three-dimensional digital images of 500 MSMs with mature roots were taken from 250 Yemeni individuals and analyzed for the following features: number of roots, shape and type of roots, type of canal configuration in each root, prevalence of C-shaped canal, and primary variations in the morphology of root and canal systems. Chi square and Fisher's exact tests were employed for statistical analysis. RESULTS: 89.6% of MSMs had two separate roots, 9% had two fused roots, 0.6% had three separate roots and 0.8% had one root. Mesial root was mostly ribbon-shaped (60.5%) and distal root was mostly kidney-shaped (50.7%). Type II and Type I canal configurations were the most frequent in mesial (56.9%) and distal (91.3%) roots, respectively. C-shaped canals were found in 9%. Six variants were found with variant 3 being the most common (71%). CONCLUSION: Yemeni MSMs are mainly two-rooted. The prevalence of three- and one-rooted MSMs was relatively low. Various canals configurations were found in MSMs among this sample of Yemeni population. The clinicians should consider C-shaped roots and canals when treating Yemeni MSMs and should be aware of their morphological variations to ensure successful root canal treatment. Although bilateral similarity of many anatomical features of MSMs was found, individual evaluation of each MSM is necessary while performing endodontic treatment on both sides.
