RESUMEN

Herein, n-type pure and Zn2+-doped monoclinic bismuth oxide nanoparticles were synthesized by the citrate sol-gel method. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), photoluminescence (PL) analysis, ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy, and Hall effect measurements were used to study the effect of Zn2+ on the structural, optical, and electrical properties of nanoparticles. XRD revealed the monoclinic stable phase (α-Bi2O3) of all synthesized samples and the crystallite size of nanoparticles increased with increasing concentration of dopant. Optical analysis illustrated the red shift of absorption edge and blue shift of band gap with increasing concentration of dopant. Hall Effect measurements showed improved values (2.79 × 10-5 S cm-1 and 6.89 cm2/V·s) of conductivity and mobility, respectively, for Zn2+-doped α-Bi2O3 nanoparticles. The tuned optical band gap and improved electrical properties make Zn2+-doped α-Bi2O3 nanostructures promising candidates for optoelectronic devices. The degradation of methylene blue (MB, organic dye) in pure and zinc-doped α-Bi2O3 was investigated under solar irradiation. The optimum doping level of zinc (4.5% Zn2+-doped α-Bi2O3) reveals the attractive photocatalytic activity of α-Bi2O3 nanostructures due to electron trapping and detrapping for solar cells.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Despite the growing use of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) in cancer treatment, data regarding ICI-associated pericardial disease are primarily derived from case reports and case series. ICI related pericardial disease can be difficult to diagnose and is associated with significant morbidity. We conducted a systematic review to further characterize the epidemiology, clinical presentation, and outcomes of this patient population. METHODS: A search of four databases resulted in 31 studies meeting inclusion criteria. Patients > 18 years old who presented with ICI mediated pericardial disease were included. Intervention was medical + surgical therapy and outcomes were development of cardiac tamponade, morbidity, and mortality. RESULTS: Thirty- eight patients across 31 cases were included. Patients were majority male (72%) with a median age of 63. Common symptoms included dyspnea (59%) and chest pain (32%), with 41% presenting with cardiac tamponade. Lung cancer (81%) was the most prevalent, and nivolumab (61%) and pembrolizumab (34%) were the most used ICIs. Pericardiocentesis was performed in 68% of patients, and 92% experienced symptom improvement upon ICI cessation. Overall mortality was 16%. DISCUSSION: This study provides the most comprehensive analysis of ICI-mediated pericardial disease to date. Patients affected were most commonly male with lung cancer treated with either Nivolumab or Pembrolizumab. Diagnosis may be challenging in the setting of occult presentation with normal EKG and physical exam as well as delayed onset from therapy initiation. ICI-associated pericardial disease demonstrates high morbidity and mortality, as evidenced by a majority of patients requiring pericardiocentesis.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: In severe cases of coronary artery disease, percutaneous coronary intervention provide promising results. The stent used could be a drug-eluting stent (DES) or a titanium-nitride-oxide coated stent (TiNOS). AIM: To compare the 5-year effectiveness and safety of the two stent types. METHODS: The following systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted in accordance with the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analysis guidelines, and PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, and Cochrane Central were searched from inception till August 2023. Primary outcomes were major adverse cardiac events (MACE), cardiac death, myocardial infarction (MI), cardiac death or MI, and ischemia-driven total lesion revascularization (ID-TLR). RESULTS: Four randomized controlled trials (RCT), which analyzed a sum total of 3045 patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) after a median follow-up time of 5 years were included. Though statistically insignificant, an increase in the ID-TLR was observed in patients receiving TiNOSs vs DESs. In addition, MI, cardiac death and MI, and definite stent thrombosis (DST) were significantly decreased in the TiNOS arm. Baseline analysis revealed no significant results with meta-regression presenting non-ST elevated MI (NSTEMI) as a statistically significant covariate in the outcome of MACE. CONCLUSION: TiNOS was found to be superior to DES in terms of MI, cardiac death or MI, and DST outcomes, however, the effect of the two stent types on ID-TLR and MACE was not significant. A greater number of studies are required to establish an accurate comparison of patient outcomes in TiNOS and DES.

RESUMEN

Wound healing is a challenging clinical problem and efficient wound management is essential to prevent infection. This is best done by utilizing biocompatible materials in order to complete the healing in a rapid manner, with functional and esthetic outcomes. In this context, the zein protein fulfills the criteria of the ideal wound dressing which include non-toxicity and non-inflammatory stimulation. Zein gels containing rutin were prepared without any chemical refinement or addition of gelling agents in order to obtain a natural formulation characterized by antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties to be proposed for the treatment of burns and sores. In vitro scratch assay showed that the proposed gel formulations promoted cell migration and a rapid gap closure within 24 h (~90 %). In addition, the in vivo activities of rutin-loaded zein gel showed a greater therapeutic efficacy in Wistar rats, with a decrease of the wound area of about 90 % at day 10 with respect to the free form of the bioactive and to DuoDERM®. The evaluation of various markers (TNF-α, IL-1ß, IL-6, IL-10) confirmed the anti-inflammatory effect of the proposed formulation. The results illustrate the feasibility of exploiting the peculiar features of rutin-loaded zein gels for wound-healing purposes.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy in patients with pulmonary hypertension (PH) is associated with a heightened risk of medical complications including right heart failure, pulmonary edema, and arrhythmias. Our study investigated the association between PH and these complications during delivery. METHODS AND RESULTS: The National Inpatient Sample was used to identify delivery hospitalizations from 2011 to 2020. Multivariable logistic regression was performed to study the association of PH with the primary outcomes of in-hospital medical and obstetric complications. A total of 37 482 207 delivery hospitalizations in women ≥18 years of age were identified, of which 9593 patients had PH. Pregnant patients with PH had higher incidence of complications during delivery including preeclampsia/eclampsia, arrhythmias, and pulmonary edema among others, compared with those without PH. Pregnant patients with PH also had a higher incidence of in-hospital mortality compared with those without PH (0.51% versus 0.007%). In propensity-matched analyses, PH was still significantly associated with a higher risk of in-hospital mortality (odds ratio [OR], 5.02 [95% CI, 1.82-13.90]; P=0.001), pulmonary edema (OR, 9.11 [95% CI, 6.34-13.10]; P<0.001), peripartum cardiomyopathy (OR, 1.85 [95% CI, 1.37-2.50]; P<0.001), venous thromboembolism (OR, 12.60 [95% CI, 6.04-26.10]; P<0.001), cardiac arrhythmias (OR, 6.11 [95% CI, 4.97-7.53]; P<0.001), acute kidney injury (OR, 3.72 [95% CI, 2.86-4.84]; P<0.001), preeclampsia/eclampsia (OR, 2.24 [95% CI, 1.95-2.58]; P<0.001), and acute coronary syndrome (OR, 2.01 [95% CI, 1.06-3.80]; P=0.03), compared with pregnant patients without PH. CONCLUSIONS: Delivery hospitalizations in patients with PH are associated with a high risk of mortality, pulmonary edema, peripartum cardiomyopathy, venous thromboembolism, arrhythmias, acute kidney injury, preeclampsia/eclampsia, and acute coronary syndrome.

RESUMEN

Transposable elements (TEs) are a major component of eukaryotic genomes and are present in almost all eukaryotic organisms. TEs are highly dynamic between and within species, which significantly affects the general applicability of the TE databases. Orthoptera is the only known group in the class Insecta with a significantly enlarged genome (0.93-21.48 Gb). When analyzing the large genome using the existing TE public database, the efficiency of TE annotation is not satisfactory. To address this limitation, it becomes imperative to continually update the available TE resource library and the need for an Orthoptera-specific library as more insect genomes are publicly available. Here, we used the complete genome data of 12 Orthoptera species to de novo annotate TEs, then manually re-annotate the unclassified TEs to construct a non-redundant Orthoptera-specific TE library: Orthoptera-TElib. Orthoptera-TElib contains 24,021 TE entries including the re-annotated results of 13,964 unknown TEs. The naming of TE entries in Orthoptera-TElib adopts the same naming as RepeatMasker and Dfam and is encoded as the three-level form of "level1/level2-level3". Orthoptera-TElib can be directly used as an input reference database and is compatible with mainstream repetitive sequence analysis software such as RepeatMasker and dnaPipeTE. When analyzing TEs of Orthoptera species, Orthoptera-TElib performs better TE annotation as compared to Dfam and Repbase regardless of using low-coverage sequencing or genome assembly data. The most improved TE annotation result is Angaracris rhodopa, which has increased from 7.89% of the genome to 53.28%. Finally, Orthoptera-TElib is stored in Sqlite3 for the convenience of data updates and user access.

RESUMEN

This innovative work aims to develop highly biocompatible and degradable nanoparticles by encapsulating haemoglobin (Hb) within poly-ε-caprolactone for novel biomedical applications. We used a modified double emulsion solvent evaporation method to fabricate the particles. A Scanning electron microscope (SEM) characterized them for surface morphology. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopies (UV-visible) elucidated preserved chemical and biological structure of encapsulated haemoglobin. The airproof equilibrium apparatus obtained the oxygen-carrying capacity and P50 values. The DPPH assay assessed free radical scavenging potential. The antibacterial properties were observed using four different bacterial strains by disk diffusion method. The MTT assay investigates the cytotoxic effects on mouse fibroblast cultured cell lines (L-929). The MTT assay showed that nanoparticles have no toxicity over large concentrations. The well-preserved structure of Hb within particles, no toxicity, high oxygen affinity, P50 value, and IC50 values open the area of new research, which may be used as artificial oxygen carriers, antioxidant, and antibacterial agents, potential therapeutic agents as well as drug carrier particles to treat the cancerous cells. The novelty of this work is the antioxidant and antibacterial properties of developed nanoparticles are not been reported yet. Results showed that the prepared particles have strong antioxidant and antibacterial potential.

RESUMEN

Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are RNA molecules that regulate gene expression at several levels, including transcriptional, post-transcriptional, and translational. They have a length of more than 200 nucleotides and cannot code. Many human diseases have been linked to aberrant lncRNA expression, highlighting the need for a better knowledge of disease etiology to drive improvements in diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic methods. Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are one of the leading causes of death worldwide. LncRNAs play an essential role in the complex process of heart formation, and their abnormalities have been associated with several CVDs. This Review article looks at the roles and relationships of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in a wide range of CVDs, such as heart failure, myocardial infarction, atherosclerosis, and cardiac hypertrophy. In addition, the review delves into the possible uses of lncRNAs in diagnostics, prognosis, and clinical treatments of cardiovascular diseases. Additionally, it considers the field's future prospects while examining how lncRNAs might be altered and its clinical applications.

RESUMEN

We study potential non-targeted effects of a large-scale national conditional cash transfer program-Peru's Juntos-on the fertility and reproductive decisions of adult beneficiaries. We use an event study design, exploiting time and geographic variation in the rollout of the program, to identify the causal effects of the program. We find that Juntos decreases the number of children that adult beneficiaries have and that these effects persist over time. We explore various mechanisms and find that Juntos does not affect fertility preferences but rather empowers women to avoid unwanted births. We provide evidence that this decrease is most likely due to better access to and more extensive use of modern birth control methods.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is an established revascularisation strategy for multivessel and left main coronary artery disease. Although aspirin is routinely recommended for patients with CABG, the optimal antiplatelet regimen after CABG remains unclear. We evaluated the efficacies and risks of different antiplatelet regimens (dual (DAPT) versus single (SAPT), and dual with clopidogrel (DAPT-C) versus dual with ticagrelor or prasugrel (DAPT-T/P)) after CABG. METHODS: We followed Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines and performed a comprehensive literature search using PubMed, Ovid Medline, Ovid Embase and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials. Data were extracted and pooled using random-effects models and Review Manager (V.5.4). RESULTS: Among the 2970 article abstracts screened, 215 full-text articles were reviewed and 38 studies totaling 77 447 CABG patients were included for analyses. DAPT compared with SAPT was associated with significantly lower all-cause mortality (OR 0.65 with 95% CI 0.50 to 0.86; p=0.002), cardiovascular mortality (OR 0.53, 95% CI 0.33 to 0.84; p=0.008), and major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events (MACCE) (OR 0.68, 95% CI 0.51 to 0.91; p=0.01), but higher rates of major (OR 1.30, 95% CI 1.08 to 1.56; p=0.007) and minor bleeding (OR 1.87, 95% CI 1.28 to 2.74; p=0.001) after CABG. DAPT-T/P compared with DAPT-C was associated with significantly lower all-cause (OR 0.43, 95% CI 0.29 to 0.65; p≤0.0001) and cardiovascular mortality (OR 0.44, 95% CI 0.24 to 0.80; p=0.008), and no differences on other cardiovascular or bleeding outcomes after CABG. CONCLUSION: In patients with CABG, DAPT compared with SAPT and DAPT-T/P compared with DAPT-C were associated with reduction in all-cause and cardiovascular mortality, especially in patients with acute coronary syndrome. Additionally, DAPT was associated with reduction in MACCE, but higher rates of major and minor bleeding. An individualised approach to choosing antiplatelet regimen is necessary for patients with CABG based on ischaemic and bleeding risks.

RESUMEN

In this retrospective study, spanning from 1999 to 2020, we examined mortality trends related to SICM (substance-induced cardiomyopathy) among individuals aged 75 and older. A total of 473,408 SICM-related deaths were identified, with detailed data on the place of death available for 454,632 cases, revealing that a significant proportion occurred in medical facilities (45.43 %), nursing homes (24.67 %), hospices (4.21 %), and at home (25.69 %). Our analysis of age-adjusted mortality rates (AAMR) showed an overall decline from 1999 to 2020, decreasing from 14.5 to 7.7 per 10,000 population, with an initial increase from 1999 to 2001 followed by a subsequent decline. Gender-based analysis indicated consistently higher AAMRs for elderly men compared to elderly women. Moreover, we observed variations in AAMRs based on race and ethnicity, with NH Black or African American individuals having the highest AAMRs. Geographic disparities were notable, with states like Delaware having AAMRs twice as high as Utah. The Southern region consistently exhibited the highest AAMR, followed by the Midwestern, Northeastern, and Western regions. Furthermore, metropolitan areas consistently had higher AAMRs than nonmetropolitan areas, although both showed declining trends over the study period. These findings provide valuable insights into SICM-related mortality patterns among the elderly population, emphasizing the importance of considering demographic and geographic factors in public health planning and interventions.

RESUMEN

Cardiovascular disease, particularly coronary heart disease, is becoming more common among those living with HIV. Individuals with HIV face an increased susceptibility to myocardial infarction, also known as a heart attack, as compared to the general population in developed countries. This heightened risk can be attributed mainly to the presence of effective antiretroviral drugs and the resulting longer lifespan. Some cardiac issues linked to non-antiretroviral medications, including myocarditis, endocarditis, cardiomyopathy with dilation, pulmonary hypertension, and oedema of the heart, may affect those not undergoing highly active antiretroviral therapy (ART). Impaired immune function and systemic inflammation are significant contributors to this phenomenon after initiating highly aggressive antiretroviral treatment ART. It is becoming more challenging to determine the best course of treatment for HIV-associated cardiomyopathy due to new research suggesting that protease inhibitors might have a negative impact on the development of HF. Currently, the primary focus of research on ART medications is centered on the cardiovascular adverse effects of nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors and protease inhibitors. This review paper thoroughly evaluates the advancements achieved in cardiovascular disease research and explores the potential implications for prospects. Additionally, it considers the field's future prospects while examining how ART might be altered and its clinical applications.

RESUMEN

Interactive wound dressings have displayed promising outcomes in enhancing the wound healing process. This study focuses on creating a nanocomposite wound dressing with interactive and bioactive properties, showcasing potent antioxidant effects. To achieve this, we developed cerium oxide nanoparticles utilizing curcumin as both the reducing and capping agent. Characterization techniques such as SEM, EDX, DLS, Zetasizer, FTIR, and XRD were utilized to analyze the cerium oxide nanoparticles synthesized through a green approach. The image analysis on the obtained TEM images showed that the curcumin-assisted biosynthesized CeO2NPs have a size of 18.8 ± 4.1 nm. The peaks located at 28.1, 32.7, 47.1, 56.0, 58.7, 69.0, and 76.4 correspond to (111), (200), (220), (311), (222), (400), and (331) crystallographic planes. We applied the Debye-Scherrer equation and observed that the approximate crystallite size of the biosynthesized NPs is around 8.2 nm based on the most intensive broad Bragg peak at 28.1°. The cerium oxide nanoparticles synthesized were integrated into an alginate hydrogel matrix, and the microstructure, porosity, and swelling behavior of the resulting wound dressing were assessed. The characterization analyses provided insights into the physical and chemical properties of the green-synthesized cerium oxide nanoparticles and the alginate hydrogel-based wound dressing. In vitro studies demonstrated that the wound dressing based on alginate hydrogel exhibited favorable antioxidant properties and displayed hemocompatibility and biocompatibility. Animal studies conducted on a rat full-thickness skin wound model showed that the alginate hydrogel-based wound dressing effectively accelerated the wound healing process. Overall, these findings suggest that the alginate hydrogel-based wound dressing holds promise as a highly effective material for wound healing applications.

RESUMEN

An accurate classification of upper limb movements using electroencephalogram (EEG) signals is gaining significant importance in recent years due to the prevalence of brain-computer interfaces. The upper limbs in the human body are crucial since different skeletal segments combine to make a range of motions that helps us in our trivial daily tasks. Decoding EEG-based upper limb movements can be of great help to people with spinal cord injury (SCI) or other neuro-muscular diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), primary lateral sclerosis, and periodic paralysis. This can manifest in a loss of sensory and motor function, which could make a person reliant on others to provide care in day-to-day activities. We can detect and classify upper limb movement activities, whether they be executed or imagined using an EEG-based brain-computer interface (BCI). Toward this goal, we focus our attention on decoding movement execution (ME) of the upper limb in this study. For this purpose, we utilize a publicly available EEG dataset that contains EEG signal recordings from fifteen subjects acquired using a 61-channel EEG device. We propose a method to classify four ME classes for different subjects using spectrograms of the EEG data through pre-trained deep learning (DL) models. Our proposed method of using EEG spectrograms for the classification of ME has shown significant results, where the highest average classification accuracy (for four ME classes) obtained is 87.36%, with one subject achieving the best classification accuracy of 97.03%.Clinical relevance- This research shows that movement execution of upper limbs is classified with significant accuracy by employing a spectrogram of the EEG signals and a pre-trained deep learning model which is fine-tuned for the downstream task.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: There is currently no thromboembolic risk stratification tool for amyloid cardiomyopathy (ACM) and the current survival staging systems for ACM have only modest discriminatory ability. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to evaluate the prognostic value of left atrial (LA) strain to predict incident thrombotic event (TE) and improve survival staging systems in ACM. METHODS: The authors identified patients with light chain (AL) or transthyretin (ATTR) ACM and no history of atrial fibrillation (AF) at diagnosis. Three components of LA strain (reservoir, conduit, and contractile) were measured and their predictive value for TE and mortality was determined. In addition, the authors evaluated the incremental utility of adding LA strain to current prognostic staging systems. RESULTS: The authors included 448 patients (50.2% AL; 49.8% ATTR) with median follow-up of 3.8 years. There were 64 (14.3%) TE cases, 103 (23%) AF cases, and 234 (52.2%) deaths. Notably, 75% of TEs occurred without preceding AF documented. LA strain reservoir and LA contractile strain significantly predicted both events: HRs for TE were 2.22 (95% CI: 1.27-3.85; P = 0.006) and 2.63 (95% CI: 1.25-5.00; P = 0.01) per SD decrease in LA strain reservoir and LA contractile strain, respectively. The respective HRs for mortality were 1.32 (95% CI: 1.09-1.59; P < 0.001) and 1.49 (95% CI: 1.22-1.75; P < 0.001). Also, LA strain reservoir and LA contractile strain significantly improved the C-statistics of the Mayo AL staging from 0.65 to 0.68 and 0.70, respectively (P ≤ 0.02); Mayo ATTR staging (0.73 to 0.79 and 0.80, respectively; P < 0.001); and Gillmore ATTR staging (0.70 to 0.79 and 0.80, respectively; P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: LA strain identifies ACM patients with high thrombotic risk (independent of AF) and improves current ACM-specific survival staging.
