RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To assess oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in edentulous subjects before and after 3, 6, 9, and 12 months of oral rehabilitation with conventional complete dentures (CDs) and to compare their OHRQoL to dentate subjects. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 148 subjects were selected and divided into three groups: G1 = edentulous in maxillary arch (n = 68, mean age = 61.37 ± 8.91 years); G2 = completely edentulous (n = 50, mean age = 65.14 ± 8.91 years); and G3 = control group (dentate, n = 30, mean age = 60.03 ± 6.88 years). OHRQoL was assessed using the Brazilian version of the Oral Health Impact Profile-Edentulous (OHIP-EDENT) questionnaire at four different times: baseline (pretreatment) and 3, 6, 9, and 12 months after oral rehabilitation with a new CD. The data showed nonparametric distribution and were submitted to Kruskal-Wallis test (± = .05). RESULTS: The impact of OHRQoL was higher for the edentulous groups compared to the control group at baseline (P < .05). Treatment significantly improved OHRQoL after 3 months of prosthesis use, and this effect was maintained during all 12 months of evaluation (P > .05). CONCLUSION: Oral rehabilitation with conventional CDs in one or both arches improved OHRQoL in edentulous patients after 3 months of prosthesis use, and its effect was maintained for up to 12 months.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the effects of grape juice (Vitis labrusca L.) on dyslipidemia, resistance to insulin, and left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) in mice homozygous for the absence of the LDL receptor gene (LDLr -/-) under a hyperlipidemic diet. METHODOLOGY: We divided 30 male mice (3 months old) into three groups (n = 10); the HL group was fed a high-fat diet, the HLU group received a high-fat diet and 2 g/kg/day of grape juice, and the HLS group was fed a high-fat diet and simvastatin (20 mg/kg/day). We assessed the blood pressure profile of the mice. We also determined the levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) and lipid profile, glycemic and insulinemic profiles, and calculated the HOMA-IR. Cardiomyocyte hypertrophy, interstitial collagen deposit, and the expression of CD40 ligand (CD40L) and metalloproteinases 2 and 9 were assessed immunohistologically. RESULTS: After 60 days, the mice treated with grape juice showed similar results as those of the group treated with simvastatin. The use of grape fruit attenuated dyslipidemia and insulin resistance and significantly increased the levels of high cholesterol density lipoproteins (HDLc). The antioxidant potential of phenolic compounds associated with the increase in HDLc levels in the mice of the HLU group prevented the development of LVH and arterial hypertension since it inhibited the inflammatory response induced by the CD40 pathway and its ligand CD40L. Consequently, there was a lower expression of MMP-2 and MMP-9 and lower serum levels of CRP. CONCLUSION: Grape juice has a hypolipidemic and cardiac protective potential, presenting a similar effect as that of simvastatin through a direct antioxidant action of phenolic compounds, or indirectly, via antioxidant action and anti-inflammatory activity of the HDLc. These results suggest that grape juice is a functional food possessing a high potential to prevent cardiovascular diseases.

RESUMEN

ABSTRACT The control of dyslipidemia by using herbal products is an important subject for studies. In this study, we evaluated the effects of dry Passiflora incarnata L. extract over dyslipidemia, left ventricular hypertrophy, and hepatic oxidative stress of LDL receptor knockout mice (LDLr-/-). Forty 4-month old male LDLr-/- mice were distributed into four groups: Group standard diet; Group standard diet and 200 mg/kg of body weight of Passiflora incarnata L. leaf dry extract; Group high-fat diet; Group high-fat diet and 200 mg/kg of body weight of Passiflora incarnata L. leaf dry extract. After 30 days, Passiflora incarnata L. dry extract reduced the effects of the high-fat diet, with a decrease of total cholesterol, triglycerides, and increase of high-density lipoprotein (HDL), as well as a reduction of C-reactive protein, alkaline phosphatase and insulin. There was no effect on glucose, Homa index and enzymes aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase. However, the prevention of left ventricular hypertrophy occurred, as well as lipid peroxidation and the production of carbonyl proteins, which are both oxidative stress markers. In conclusion, Passiflora incarnata L. dry extract acts in the prevention of dyslipidemia, consequently, hindering the occurrence of hepatic oxidative stress and the development of left ventricular hypertrophy by the increase of serum HDL, in mice that had the effects of a high-fat diet.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND/AIM: School is a place with a high frequency of dental trauma, and several studies have shown that teachers' knowledge in how to act during acute dental emergencies is lacking. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the knowledge and actions of a group of Brazilian school teachers relative to dental trauma in permanent teeth. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional, observational study, from 27, schools randomized by lot was performed. All 205 teachers in the 27 schools answered a structured and self-administered questionnaire. The questionnaire contained questions about the participants' education level, work experience and first-aid training, as well as knowledge about and attitudes towards dental trauma in permanent teeth as well as their experience in dental emergency situations. RESULTS: Of the 205 teachers, 91.2% reported having no knowledge about dental trauma and 16.6% of teachers had seen cases of acute dental trauma. Among the 205 teachers, 23.9% had received first-aid training and 4.1% had been educated in dental trauma. Regarding actions of acute injuries to permanent teeth, the teachers showed a significant error rate. No association was found between the level of education and first-aid training or experience with dental trauma. In relation to the experience of the teacher, association was found when managing trauma to soft tissue. CONCLUSION: The knowledge and actions of Brazilian schoolteachers in relation to care of acute injuries in permanent teeth were inconsistent and based on unfounded concepts, beliefs and intuition, and lack of training. Continuing education of teachers in oral care due to a dental trauma should be a good plan of action.

RESUMEN

Pentasomy of the x chromosome is a rare syndrome of unknown incidence and there are few reports in the scientific literature, especially in terms of dental care for patients with this syndrome. The aim of this study was to report the dental care given to an adolescent with pentasomy of the X chromosome. The patient presented a cleft palate, impacted teeth, malocclusion, high caries activity, gingivitis and multiple tooth loss due to caries. Despite the difficulties of carrying out the dental work due to involuntary movements and the initial lack of collaboration from the patient the overall dental care was completed on an outpatient basis. The therapeutic success of the treatment was strongly supported by the significant cooperation and relationship that grew up along the period of the treatment, as well as the desire to have the treatment done by both the patient and her parents.

This study evaluated the flexural strength of In Ceram Zirconia in 20 specimens, simulating a fixed partial denture.Methodology: a total of 20 specimens in the form of bar with the following dimensions: 20mm long, 1.2 mm thick and 4mm wide and divided into two groups: Group A with span distance of 12mm and Group B with span distance of 18mm, simulating one and two pontics respectively. Samples were submitted in loading test with three points, fractographic analysis and scanning electron microscopy. Results: ANOVA, single factor did not found significant statistically difference in the results of flexural strength between groups A and B, but the result of stress and rupture strength showed the opposite. Conclusion: increasing the distance between the supports did not reduce the flexural strength of the material. There is a higher stress concentration when the distance between the supports increases, this represent a tendency to break for prostheses with greater length...
