Background: Limited data exist on the prognostic value of changes in pulse pressure (PP, the difference between systolic and diastolic blood pressure) during hospitalization for patients with coronary artery disease who have undergone percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Methods: In the Clinical Deep Data Accumulation System (CLIDAS), we studied 8,708 patients who underwent PCI. We aimed to examine the association between discharge PP and cardiovascular outcomes. PP was measured before PCI and at discharge. Patients were divided into five groups (quintiles) based on the change in PPQ1 (-18.0 ± 9.9 mmHg), Q2 (-3.8 ± 2.6), Q3 (reference; 3.7 ± 2.0), Q4 (11.3 ± 2.6), and Q5 (27.5 ± 11.2). We then analyzed the relationship between PP change and outcomes. Results: The mean patient age was 70 ± 11 years, with 6,851 (78 %) men and 3,786 (43 %) having acute coronary syndrome. U-shaped relationships were observed for the incidence rates of major adverse cardiac or cerebrovascular events (MACCE, a composite endpoint of cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, and stroke), revascularization, and hospitalization for heart failure (HF). After adjusting for confounding factors, higher PP at discharge was associated with an increased risk of MACCE (adjusted hazard ratio 1.41; 95 %CI, 1.06-1.87 in Q5 [73.9 ± 9.3 mmHg]). Evaluating PP change revealed a U-shaped association with MACCE (1.50; 1.11-2.02 in Q1 and 1.47; 0.98-2.20 in Q5). Additionally, Q5 had a higher risk for hospitalization for HF (1.37; 1.00-1.88). Conclusions: Our findings demonstrate a U-shaped association between changes in PP and cardiovascular outcomes. This data suggests the significance of blood pressure control during hospitalization for patients who have undergone PCI.

Background: Polypharmacy is associated with an increased risk of adverse events due to the higher number of drugs used. This is particularly notable in patients with chronic coronary syndrome (CCS), who are known to use a large number of drugs. Therefore, we investigated polypharmacy in patients with CCS, using CLIDAS, a multicenter database of patients who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention. Method and results: Between 2017 and 2020, 1411 CCS patients (71.5 ± 10.5 years old; 77.3 % male) were enrolled. The relationship between cardiovascular events occurring during the median follow-up of 514 days and the number of drugs at the time of PCI was investigated. The median number of drugs prescribed was nine. Major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), defined as cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, stroke, heart failure, transient ischemic attack, or unstable angina, occurred in 123 patients, and all-cause mortality occurred in 68 patients. For each additional drug, the adjusted hazard ratios for MACE and all-cause mortality increased by 2.069 (p = 0.003) and 1.102 (p = 0.010). The adjusted hazard ratios for MACE and all-cause mortality were significantly higher in the group using nine or more drugs compared to the group using eight or fewer drugs (1.646 and 2.253, both p < 0.001). Conclusion: This study showed that an increase in the number of drugs used for CCS may be associated with MACE and all-cause mortality. In patients with CCS, it might be beneficial to minimize the number of medications as much as possible, while managing comorbidities and using guideline-recommended drugs.

The Japanese Society of Hypertension have established a blood pressure (BP) target of 130/80 mmHg for patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). We evaluated the data of 8793 CAD patients in the Clinical Deep Data Accumulation System database who underwent cardiac catheterization at six university hospitals and the National Cerebral and Cardiovascular Center (average age 70 ± 11 years, 78% male, 43% with acute coronary syndrome [ACS]). Patients were divided into two groups based on whether or not they achieved the guideline-recommended BP of <130/80 mmHg. We analyzed the relationship between BP classification and major adverse cardiac and cerebral event (MACCE) separately in two groups: those with ACS and those with chronic coronary syndrome (CCS). During an average follow-up period of 33 months, 710 MACCEs occurred. A BP below 130/80 mmHg was associated with fewer MACCEs in both the overall (hazard ratio [HR] 0.83, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.70-1.00, p = 0.048) and the ACS group (HR 0.67, 95%CI 0.51-0.88, p = 0.003). In particular, stroke events were also lower among those with a BP below 130/80 mmHg in both the overall (HR 0.69, 95%CI 0.53-0.90, p = 0.006) and ACS groups (HR 0.44, 95%CI 0.30-0.67, p < 0.001). In conclusion, the achievement of BP guidelines was associated with improved outcomes in CAD patients, particularly in reducing stroke risk among those with ACS.

INTRODUCTION: The left-digit bias (LDB), a numerical-related cognitive bias, not only potentially influences decision-making among the general public but also that of medical practitioners. Few studies have investigated its role in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). METHODS: We retrospectively included all consecutive patients with OHCA witnessed by family members registered in the All-Japan Utstein Registry of the Fire and Disaster Management Agency between January 1, 2005, and December 31, 2020. Target outcomes were the percentage of bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (BCPR) performed by family members or paramedics and the percentage of prehospital physician-staffed advanced cardiac life support (ACLS). Using a nonparametric regression discontinuity methodology, we examined whether a significant change occurred in the percentages of BCPR and ACLS at the age thresholds of 60, 70, 80, and 90 years, which would indicate the presence of LDB. RESULTS: Of the 1,930,273 OHCA cases in the All-Japan Utstein Registry, 384,200 (19.9%) cases witnessed by family members were analyzed. The mean age was 75.8 years (±SD 13.7), with 38.0% (n = 146,137) female. We identified no discontinuities in the percentages of chest compressions, mouth-to-mouth ventilation, or automated external defibrillator (AED) usage by family members for the age thresholds of 60, 70, 80, and 90 years. Moreover, no discontinuities existed in the percentages of chest compressions, advanced airway management, and AED usage by paramedics or prehospital ACLS by physicians for any of the age thresholds. CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, our study did not find any evidence that age-related LDB affects medical decision-making in patients with OHCA.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: Diabetic retinopathy is characterised by neuroinflammation that drives neuronal and vascular degenerative pathology, which in many individuals can lead to retinal ischaemia and neovascularisation. Infiltrating macrophages and activated retina-resident microglia have been implicated in the progression of diabetic retinopathy, although the distinct roles of these immune cells remain ill-defined. Our aim was to clarify the distinct roles of macrophages/microglia in the pathogenesis of proliferative ischaemic retinopathies. METHODS: Murine oxygen-induced retinopathy is commonly used as a model of ischaemia-induced proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR). We evaluated the phenotype macrophages/microglia by immunostaining, quantitative real-time RT-PCR (qRT-PCR), flow cytometry and scRNA-seq analysis. In clinical imaging studies of diabetic retinopathy, we used optical coherence tomography (OCT) and OCT angiography. RESULTS: Immunostaining, qRT-PCR and flow cytometry showed expression levels of M1-like macrophages/microglia markers (CD80, CD68 and nitric oxide synthase 2) and M2-like macrophages/microglia markers (CD206, CD163 and macrophage scavenger receptor 1) were upregulated in areas of retinal ischaemia and around neo-vessels, respectively. scRNA-seq analysis of the ischaemic retina revealed distinct ischaemia-related clusters of macrophages/microglia that express M1 markers as well as C-C chemokine receptor 2. Inhibition of Rho-kinase (ROCK) suppressed CCL2 expression and reduced CCR2-positive M1-like macrophages/microglia in areas of ischaemia. Furthermore, the area of retinal ischaemia was reduced by suppressing blood macrophage infiltration not only by ROCK inhibitor and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 antibody but also by GdCl3. Clinical imaging studies of diabetic retinopathy using OCT indicated potential involvement of macrophages/microglia represented by hyperreflective foci in areas of reduced perfusion. CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION: These results collectively indicated that heterotypic macrophages/microglia differentially contribute to retinal ischaemia and neovascularisation in retinal vascular diseases including diabetic retinopathy. This adds important new information that could provide a basis for a more targeted, cell-specific therapeutic approach to prevent progression to sight-threatening PDR.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: In advanced atherosclerotic lesions, macrophage deaths result in necrotic core formation and plaque vulnerability. Cyclophilin D (CypD) is a mitochondria-specific cyclophilin involved in the process of cell death after organ ischemia-reperfusion. However, the role of CypD in atherosclerosis, especially in necrotic core formation, is unknown. Therefore, this experiment aims to clarify the role of CypD in necrotic core formation. METHODS: To clarify the specific role of CypD, encoded by Ppif in mice, apolipoprotein-E/CypD-double knockout (Apoe-/-Ppif-/-) mice were generated. These mice were fed a high-fat diet containing 0.15 % cholesterol for 24 weeks to accelerate atherosclerotic lesion development. RESULTS: Deletion of CypD decreased the necrotic core size, accompanied by a reduction of macrophage apoptosis compared to control Apoe-/- mice. In RAW264.7 cells, siRNA-mediated knockdown of CypD attenuated the release of cytochrome c from the mitochondria to the cytosol induced by endoplasmic reticulum stress inducer thapsigargin. In addition, necroptosis, induced by TNF-α and caspase inhibitor, was attenuated by knockdown of CypD. Ly-6Chigh inflammatory monocytes in peripheral blood leukocytes and mRNA expression of Il1b in the aorta were decreased by deletion of CypD. In contrast, siRNA-mediated knockdown of CypD did not significantly decrease Il1b nor Ccl2 mRNA expression in RAW264.7 cells treated with LPS and IFN-γ, suggesting that inhibition of inflammation in vivo is likely due to decreased cell death in the atherosclerotic lesions rather than a direct action of CypD deletion on the macrophage. CONCLUSIONS: These results indicate that CypD induces macrophage death and mediates necrotic core formation in advanced atherosclerotic lesions. CypD could be a novel therapeutic target for treating atherosclerotic vascular diseases.

Vascular calcification, which is a major complication of diabetes mellitus, is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Osteogenic differentiation of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) is one of the key mechanisms underlying vascular calcification. Emerging evidence suggests that macrophage-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) may be involved in calcification within atherosclerotic plaques in patients with diabetes mellitus. However, the role of macrophage-derived EVs in the progression of vascular calcification is largely unknown. In this study, we investigated whether macrophage-derived EVs contribute to the osteogenic differentiation of VSMCs under high glucose conditions. We isolated EVs that were secreted by murine peritoneal macrophages under normal glucose (EVs-NG) or high glucose (EVs-HG) conditions. miRNA array analysis in EVs from murine macrophages showed that miR-17-5p was significantly increased in EVs-HG compared with EVs-NG. Prediction analysis with miRbase identified transforming growth factor ß receptor type II (TGF-ß RII) as a potential target of miR-17-5p. EVs-HG as well as miR-17-5p overexpression with lipid nanoparticles inhibited the gene expression of Runx2, and TGF-ß RII. Furthermore, we demonstrated that VSMCs transfected with miR-17-5p mimic inhibited calcium deposition. Our findings reveal a novel role of macrophage-derived EVs in the negative regulation of osteogenic differentiation in VSMCs under high glucose conditions.

Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has impacted on cardiovascular disease. However, it remains unclear whether the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted on disease severity and patients' prognosis of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in Japan. MethodsâandâResults: We retrospectively accumulated data from the Japanese Registry of All Cardiac and Vascular Diseases-Diagnosis Procedure Combination (JROAD-DPC) study (April 2019 to March 2021). Patients were divided into a before COVID-19 pandemic group or a during COVID-19 pandemic group. The proportion of patients who presented with cardiogenic shock (Killip class IV) was compared between groups, in association with 30-day mortality as the primary outcome. Killip class IV AMI significantly increased in the during COVID-19 pandemic group (15.7% vs. 14.5% in the before pandemic group, P<0.0001). The 30-day mortality was higher in the during COVID-19 pandemic group (9.6% vs. 9.2% in the before COVID-19 pandemic group, P=0.049). However, there was no significant difference in the adjusted 30-day mortality in each Killip class between the before and during COVID-19 pandemic groups. Conclusions: During the early stage of the COVID-19 pandemic in Japan, 30-day mortality of AMI increased, mainly because of the increase of Killip class IV AMI patients. However, irrespective of the COVID-19 pandemic, the adjusted 30-day mortality of each Killip classification group was unchanged.

BACKGROUND: The Atrial Fibrillation and Ischemic Events with Rivaroxaban in Patients with Stable Coronary Artery Disease (AFIRE) trial demonstrated non-inferior efficacy endpoints for rivaroxaban monotherapy versus combination therapy (rivaroxaban plus a single antiplatelet) and superior safety endpoints in patients with atrial fibrillation and stable coronary artery disease. AIMS: This post hoc analysis investigated whether the AFIRE trial results reflected the presence or absence of prior revascularisation. METHODS: Among 2,215 patients, 1,697 (76.6%) had previously undergone revascularisation, and the remaining 518 (23.4%) had not undergone prior revascularisation. The primary efficacy endpoint was a composite of stroke, systemic embolism, myocardial infarction, unstable angina requiring revascularisation, or death from any cause, while the primary safety endpoint was major bleeding. RESULTS: In 1,697 patients with prior revascularisation, the efficacy and safety endpoints were superior for monotherapy versus combination therapy (efficacy: hazard ratio [HR] 0.62, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.45-0.85; p=0.003; safety: HR 0.62, 95% CI: 0.39-0.98; p=0.042). Among 518 without prior revascularisation, there were no significant differences in endpoints (efficacy: HR 1.19, 95% CI: 0.67-2.12; p=0.554; safety: HR 0.47, 95% CI: 0.18-1.26; p=0.134). There was borderline interaction of the efficacy endpoints (p=0.055) between two treatments. The safety benefit of monotherapy on any bleeding was significant in patients without prior revascularisation (HR 0.59, 95% CI: 0.38-0.93; p=0.022). CONCLUSIONS: In high-risk thrombosis patients with a history of prior revascularisation, rivaroxaban monotherapy versus combination therapy demonstrated favourable safety and efficacy outcomes.

The 87thAnnual Meeting of the Japanese Circulation Society (JCS2023) was held in March 2023 in Fukuoka, Japan, marking the first in-person gathering after the COVID-19 pandemic. With the theme of "New Challenge With Next Generation" the conference emphasized the development of future cardiovascular leaders and technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI). Notable sessions included the Mikamo Lecture on heart failure and the Mashimo Lecture on AI in medicine. Various hands-on sessions and participatory events were well received, promoting learning and networking. Post-event surveys showed high satisfaction among participants, with positive feedback on face-to-face interactions and the overall experience. JCS2023, attended by 17,852 participants, concluded successfully, marking a significant milestone in post-pandemic meetings, and advancing cardiovascular medicine.

BACKGROUND: Precise mapping of the Purkinje fiber network is essential in catheter ablation of Purkinje-related ventricular arrhythmias (PrVAs). We sought to evaluate the mapping ability of a multi-spline duodecapolar catheter (PentaRay) for PrVAs. METHODS: Mappings of Purkinje fibers by PentaRay catheters were compared with those by conventional mapping catheters in consecutive patients undergoing catheter ablation of PrVAs from 2015 to 2022. RESULTS: Sixteen PrVAs (7 premature ventricular contractions or non-reentrant fascicular tachycardias [PVCs/NRFTs] and 9 fascicular ventricular tachycardias [FVTs]) were retrospectively studied. In PVCs/NRFTs, earliest preceding Purkinje potentials (PPs) could be recorded by the PentaRay catheters but not by the mapping and ablation catheters in 5 cases. At the earliest PP sites, the precedence from the QRS onset was greater, and the amplitude of the preceding potentials was higher in the PentaRay catheter compared with those in the mapping and ablation catheter (-62.0 ± 42.8 vs. -29.4 ± 34.2 ms, P = 0.02; 0.45 ± 0.43 vs. 0.09 ± 0.08 mV, P = 0.02). In FVTs, late diastolic potentials (P1) were recorded by the PentaRay catheters but not by the mapping and ablation catheters or the linear duodecapolar catheter in 2 cases. The amplitude of P1 was higher in the PentaRay catheter compared with that in the linear duodecapolar catheter and the mapping and ablation catheters (0.72 ± 0.49 vs. 0.17 ± 0.18 vs. 0.27 ± 0.21 mV, P = 0.0006, P = 0.002). The localized critical PPs, defined as the earliest preceding potentials in PVCs/NRFTs and P1 in FVTs, could be recorded in all the patients by the PentaRay catheter. The mapping ability of critical PPs of PrVAs was better with the PentaRay catheter than with the conventional mapping catheters (16/16 vs. 9/16, P = 0.004 by McNemar exact test). CONCLUSIONS: The PentaRay catheter has clinical advantages in mapping of the Purkinje fiber network to reveal critical PPs as ablation targets of PrVAs.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the association between heart failure (HF) severity measured based on brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) levels and future bleeding events after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). BACKGROUND: The Academic Research Consortium for High Bleeding Risk presents a bleeding risk assessment for antithrombotic therapy in patients after PCI. HF is a risk factor for bleeding in Japanese patients. METHODS: Using an electronic medical record-based database with seven tertiary hospitals in Japan, this retrospective study included 7160 patients who underwent PCI between April 2014 and March 2020 and who completed a 3-year follow-up and were divided into three groups: no HF, HF with high BNP level and HF with low BNP level. The primary outcome was bleeding events according to the Global Use of Streptokinase and t-PA for Occluded Coronary Arteries classification of moderate and severe bleeding. The secondary outcome was major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE). Furthermore, thrombogenicity was measured using the Total Thrombus-Formation Analysis System (T-TAS) in 536 consecutive patients undergoing PCI between August 2013 and March 2017 at Kumamoto University Hospital. RESULTS: Multivariate Cox regression showed that HF with high BNP level was significantly associated with bleeding events, MACE and all-cause death. In the T-TAS measurement, the thrombogenicity was lower in patients with HF with high BNP levels than in those without HF and with HF with low BNP levels. CONCLUSIONS: HF with high BNP level is associated with future bleeding events, suggesting that bleeding risk might differ depending on HF severity.

OBJECTIVES: We sought to investigate the 1-year outcomes, including all-cause and cardiovascular mortality, major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs), and major bleeding, of patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with or without the revived directional coronary atherectomy (DCA) catheter in a Japanese nationwide registry. BACKGROUND: Clinical data regarding the midterm outcomes of patients undergoing PCI with DCA are scarce in contemporary real-world practice. METHODS: We analyzed the data of 74,764 patients who underwent PCI at 179 hospitals from January 2017 to December 2018. The baseline characteristics and 1-year outcomes of patients with stable coronary artery disease or unstable angina who underwent PCI with or without DCA were assessed. RESULTS: Overall, 431 patients (0.6%) underwent PCI with DCA. Patients in the DCA group were younger and predominantly male, with fewer comorbidities than patients in the non-DCA group. Stentless PCI with DCA following additional drug-coated balloon (DCB) angioplasty was the dominant strategy in the DCA group (43.6%). One-year outcomes, including all-cause mortality (1.2% in the DCA group vs. 2.5% in the non-DCA group, respectively, p = 0.075), cardiovascular death (0.9% vs. 1.0%, p = 0.69), MACEs (1.9% vs. 1.8%, p = 0.96), and nonfatal major bleeding requiring readmission (1.2% vs. 1.4%, p = 0.62), were comparable between the two groups. In the DCA group, 1-year outcomes were comparable, regardless of whether the stent or DCB was used. CONCLUSIONS: One-year clinical outcomes after PCI with DCA in patients with stable coronary artery disease or unstable angina are acceptable, regardless of stent use.

Background Thrombocytopenia poses a risk of bleeding in patients with chronic coronary syndrome after coronary intervention. However, whether thrombocytopenia also increases the bleeding risk in patients with atrial fibrillation and chronic coronary syndrome remains unclear. Methods and Results This study evaluated the AFIRE (Atrial Fibrillation and Ischemic Events With Rivaroxaban in Patients With Stable Coronary Artery Disease) trial. Thrombocytopenia was defined as platelet count <100 000/mm3 level at enrollment. Primary end points included incidence of major bleeding based on the International Society on Thrombosis and Hemostasis criterion and major adverse cardiovascular ischemic events (cardiac death, myocardial infarction, and stroke). A total of 2133 patients were classified into the thrombocytopenia (n=70) and nonthrombocytopenia (n=2063) groups. Major bleeding was significantly higher in the thrombocytopenia group than in the nonthrombocytopenia group (10.0% versus 4.1%, P=0.027). The thrombocytopenia group tended to have a higher risk of major adverse cardiovascular ischemic events (11.4% versus 6.2%, P=0.08). The bleeding incidence was significantly higher in patients with thrombocytopenia receiving combination therapy with rivaroxaban and a single antiplatelet drug (thrombocytopenia group, 14.3%, versus nonthrombocytopenia group, 5.0%; hazard ratio, 3.18 [95% CI, 1.27-7.97], P=0.014). Thrombocytopenia was an independent predictor of major bleeding (hazard ratio, 2.57 [95% CI, 1.19-5.56], P=0.017). Conclusions Among patients with atrial fibrillation and chronic coronary syndrome, thrombocytopenia was significantly associated with increased risk of major bleeding. Selecting drugs for patients with thrombocytopenia continuing antithrombotic therapy should be given special consideration. Background: Heart failure (HF) is associated with a high bleeding risk after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Additionally, major bleeding events increase the risk of subsequent major adverse cardiac events (MACE). However, whether brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) levels and major bleeding events following PCI are associated with MACE and all-cause death remains unknown. This study aimed to investigate the impact of HF severity or bleeding on subsequent MACE and all-cause death. Methods: The Clinical Deep Data Accumulation System (CLIDAS), a multicenter database involving seven hospitals in Japan, was developed to collect data from electronic medical records. This retrospective analysis included 7160 patients who underwent PCI between April 2014 and March 2020 and completed a three-year follow-up. Patients were divided according to the presence of HF with high BNP (HFhBNP) (>100 pg/ml) and major bleeding events within 30 days post-PCI (30-day bleeding): HFhBNP with bleeding (n = 14), HFhBNP without bleeding (n = 370), non-HFhBNP with bleeding (n = 74), and non-HFhBNP without bleeding (n = 6702). Results: In patients without 30-day bleeding, HFhBNP was a risk factor for MACE (hazard ratio, 2.19; 95% confidence interval, 1.56-3.07) and all-cause death (hazard ratio, 1.60; 95% confidence interval, 1.60-2.23). Among HFhBNP patients, MACE incidence was higher in patients with 30-day bleeding than in those without bleeding, but the difference was not significant (p = 0.075). The incidence of all-cause death was higher in patients with bleeding (p = 0.001). Conclusions: HF with high BNP and bleeding events in the early stage after PCI might be associated with subsequent MACE and all-cause death.

Background: Recent revisions of clinical guidelines by the Japanese Circulation Society, American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology, and European Society of Cardiology updated the management of antithrombotic strategies for patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). However, the extent to which these guidelines have been implemented in real-world daily clinical practice is unclear. MethodsâandâResults: We conducted surveys on the status of antithrombotic therapy for patients with AF undergoing PCI every 2 years from 2014 to 2022 in 14 cardiovascular centers in Japan. The primary use of drug-eluting stents increased from 10% in 2014 to 95-100% in 2018, and the use of direct oral anticoagulants increased from 15% in 2014 to 100% in 2018, in accordance with the revised practice guidelines. In patients with acute coronary syndrome, the duration of triple therapy within 1 month was approximately 10% until 2018, and increased to >70% from 2020. In patients with chronic coronary syndrome, the duration of triple therapy within 1 month was approximately 10% until 2016, and >75% from 2018. Since 2020, the most common timing of discontinuation of dual antiplatelet therapy to transition to anticoagulation monotherapy during the chronic phase of PCI has been 1 year after PCI. Conclusions: Japanese interventional cardiologists have updated their treatment strategies for patients with AF undergoing PCI according to revisions of clinical practice guidelines.

Oxysterols have been implicated in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases. Serum levels of oxysterols could be positively correlated with cholesterol absorption and synthesis. However, physiological regulation of various serum oxysterols is largely unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between clinical factors and cholesterol metabolism markers, and identify oxysterols associated with cholesterol absorption and synthesis in patients with coronary artery disease. Subjects (n = 207) who underwent coronary stenting between 2011 and 2013 were studied cross-sectionally. We measured lipid profiles including serum oxysterols. As for the serum biomarkers of cholesterol synthesis and absorption, oxysterol levels were positively correlated with campesterol and lathosterol. Covariance structure analysis revealed that dyslipidemia and statin usage had a positive correlation with "cholesterol absorption". Statin usage also had a positive correlation with "cholesterol synthesis". Several oxysterols associated with cholesterol absorption and/or synthesis. In conclusion, we elucidated the potential clinical factors that may affect cholesterol metabolism, and the associations between various oxysterols with cholesterol absorption and/or synthesis in patients with coronary artery disease.
