RESUMEN

Research indicates that fear of progression (FoP) may be a transdiagnostic construct underlying anxiety in people with chronic health conditions. Theories propose that interpretation of illness-related symptoms (such as pain) might be an important mechanism driving the development of FoP. However, FoP has rarely been studied in diabetes. In this study, we assessed FoP, pain, health threat-related interpretation bias, emotional states, and treatment-adherence in 198 participants with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes and an age and gender-matched control group. We hypothesised that 1) people with diabetes will be more likely to interpret ambiguous stimuli as health threat-related than people without diabetes, 2) amongst those with diabetes, pain severity and interpretation bias will be associated with more severe levels of FoP, and 3) interpretation bias will moderate the relationship between pain severity and FoP in people with diabetes, such that the positive association between pain and FoP will become stronger when people have greater interpretation bias. Our results confirmed that people with diabetes were more likely to interpret ambiguous information as health threat-related compared to people without diabetes, with a large effect (d=0.84). Moreover, people with diabetes who reported persistent pain were more likely to interpret ambiguous stimuli as health threat-related (d=0.49). Amongst people with diabetes, pain severity and interpretation bias were significantly associated with FoP. However, we did not find evidence that interpretation bias moderated the relationship between pain and FoP and these relationships could not be accounted for by general psychopathology. PERSPECTIVE: People with diabetes had greater health threat-related interpretation bias than people without diabetes, especially for those with persistent pain and more severe fear of progression (FoP). Both pain severity and interpretation bias were associated with greater FoP, but interpretation bias did not moderate the relationship between pain and FoP.

Climate and land-use change are key drivers of global change. Full-factorial field experiments in which both drivers are manipulated are essential to understand and predict their potentially interactive effects on the structure and functioning of grassland ecosystems. Here, we present 8 years of data on grassland dynamics from the Global Change Experimental Facility in Central Germany. On large experimental plots, temperature and seasonal patterns of precipitation are manipulated by superimposing regional climate model projections onto background climate variability. Climate manipulation is factorially crossed with agricultural land-use scenarios, including intensively used meadows and extensively used (i.e., low-intensity) meadows and pastures. Inter-annual variation of background climate during our study years was high, including three of the driest years on record for our region. The effects of this temporal variability far exceeded the effects of the experimentally imposed climate change on plant species diversity and productivity, especially in the intensively used grasslands sown with only a few grass cultivars. These changes in productivity and diversity in response to alterations in climate were due to immigrant species replacing the target forage cultivars. This shift from forage cultivars to immigrant species may impose additional economic costs in terms of a decreasing forage value and the need for more frequent management measures. In contrast, the extensively used grasslands showed weaker responses to both experimentally manipulated future climate and inter-annual climate variability, suggesting that these diverse grasslands are more resistant to climate change than intensively used, species-poor grasslands. We therefore conclude that a lower management intensity of agricultural grasslands, associated with a higher plant diversity, can stabilize primary productivity under climate change.

The attentional bias literature has consistently failed to take context into account. We developed a novel paradigm in immersive virtual reality (VR) with pain stimuli where it would be adaptive or nonadaptive to attend to the stimuli. Participants had to indicate the location of the stimuli. Seventy participants were recruited. The VR-attention task assessed overall attentional bias (the tendency to prioritize pain compared with nonpain stimuli) and attentional alignment (the tendency to attend to pain more in adaptive than nonadaptive situations). Pain tolerance and threshold were measured using electrocutaneous stimulation and thermal pain. We conducted 2 (context: adaptive vs nonadaptive) × 2 (congruence: congruent vs incongruent) Analysis of Covariance, controlling for threat. Participants responded to pain probes more quickly in adaptive than nonadaptive contexts. There was an overall bias away from pain-related stimuli (avoidance) in reaction time to the target. There was also an interaction where avoidance was greater in nonadaptive contexts, indicative of attentional alignment. For gaze behavior, both attentional alignment and attentional bias were observed for latency to first fixation on the target, such that participants showed vigilance for pain particularly in the adaptive context. Attentional alignment was correlated with threshold and tolerance from electrocutaneous stimulation but not thermal pain. In conclusion, we found overall attentional biases indicating vigilance (latency to first fixation) and avoidance (response to target). We also found that participants evidenced a pattern of attention favoring adaptive over nonadaptive contexts (attentional alignment). It was attentional alignment, but not overall attentional bias, that predicted pain tolerance and threshold. PERSPECTIVE: The study explored attentional processes in pain through a novel paradigm designed in VR. The results found that positive attentional alignment, or the tendency to attend to pain more in adaptive contexts rather than nonadaptive contexts, predicted pain outcomes.

Attention biases towards disease-relevant cues have been implicated in numerous disorders and health conditions, such as anxiety, cancer, drug-use disorders, and chronic pain. Attention bias modification (ABM) has shown that changing attention biases can change related emotional processes. ABM most commonly uses a modified dot-probe task, which has received increasing criticism regarding its reliability and inconsistent findings. The purpose of the present review was thus to systematically review and meta-analyse alternative tasks used in ABM research. We sought to examine whether alternative tasks significantly changed attention biases and emotional outcomes, and critically examined whether relevant sample, task and intervention characteristics moderated each of these effect sizes. Seventy-four (completer n = 15,294) study level comparisons were included in the meta-analysis. Overall, alternative ABM designs had a medium effect on changing biases (g = 0.488), and a small, but significant effect on improving clinical outcomes (g = 0.117). We found this effect to be significantly larger for studies which successfully changed biases compared to those that did not. Across all tasks, it appeared that targeting engagement biases results in the largest change to attention biases. Importantly, we found tasks incorporating gaze-contingency - encouraging engagement with non-biased stimuli - show the most promise for improving emotional outcomes.

Background: To evaluate the technique of transtibial pull-out repair with tibial interference screw fixation for medial meniscus posterior root (MMPR) tear by reporting on short-term outcomes and complications. Methods: All MMPR repairs performed between January 2019 and August 2021 (n = 70) were retrospectively screened regarding demographic data and surgical parameters. The patients were questioned for performed revision surgery, symptoms and complications. The Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) for pain, Lysholm Knee Score and International Knee Documentation Committee Subjective Knee Form (IKDC) questionnaires were used to evaluate clinical outcome. In cases of revision surgery for re-tear the mode of failure was intraoperatively classified (patients with re-tear were excluded from the clinical follow-up examination). The influence of demographic and treatment parameters (surgical and rehabilitation) on the incidence and mode of re-tear and clinical scores was evaluated. Results: After 2.3 ± 0.7 years, 62 patients (88.6 %) were available for follow-up. There were no direct intra- or postoperative complications. No revision was performed due to symptoms related to the tibial fixation material. The mean surgery time was 33.5 ± 10.8 min. The overall re-tear rate was 17.7 % (11 patients) of whom 10 were treated surgically and one conservatively. Primary mode of failure was suture cut-out from the meniscus (70 %). The NRS, Lysholm Knee Score and subjective IKDC were obtained in 38 patients and improved from 6.8 ± 2.4, 40.1 ± 23.9 and 32.8 ± 16.3 to 2.2 ± 2.2, 80.5 ± 16.3 and 63.0 ± 13.9, respectively (all p < 0.001). No influence was observed from demographic and treatment parameters on re-tear rates or clinical Scores. Conclusions: Tibial interference screw fixation is a fast and promising technique for MMPR transtibial pull-out repair. In the presented technique, utilizing non-absorbable locking sutures alongside tibial interfenrence screw fixation, the primary mode of failure was suture cut-out from the meniscus.

For terrestrial plant communities, the increase in frequency and intensity of drought events is considered as one of the most severe consequences of climate change. While single-species studies demonstrate that drought can lead to relatively rapid adaptive genetic changes, the evolutionary potential and constraints to selection need to be assessed in comparative approaches to draw more general conclusions. In a greenhouse experiment, we compare the phenotypic response and evolutionary potential of two co-occurring grassland plant species, Bromus erectus and Trifolium pratense, in two environments differing in water availability. We quantified variation in functional traits and reproductive fitness in response to drought and compared multivariate genetic variance-covariance matrices and predicted evolutionary responses between species. Species showed different drought adaptation strategies, reflected in both their species-specific phenotypic plasticity and predicted responses to selection indicating contrasting evolutionary potential under drought. In T. pratense we found evidence for stronger genetic constraints under drought compared to more favourable conditions, and for some traits plastic and predicted evolutionary responses to drought had opposing directions, likely limiting the potential for adaptive change. Our study contributes to a more detailed understanding of the evolutionary potential of species with different adaptive strategies in response to climate change and may help to inform future scenarios for semi-natural grassland ecosystems.

BACKGROUND: The posterior tibial slope has been identified as an anatomic risk factor for anterior cruciate ligament insufficiency and reruptures after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. Anterior tibial closing wedge osteotomy for correction of sagittal plane deformities has the potential to cause an unintended change in coronal plane alignment. PURPOSE: To evaluate the effects of anterior tibial closing wedge osteotomies for correction of posterior tibial slope on coronal plane alignment using an infratuberosity surgical approach and to identify predictive factors for a change in medial proximal tibial angle (MPTA). STUDY DESIGN: Case series; Level of evidence, 4. METHODS: This study reports on retrospectively obtained data from radiographic measurements of 38 anterior tibial closing wedge osteotomies. All patients underwent revision anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction and had undergone ≥1 previous anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. In all patients, an infratuberosity approach was used with angular stable plate fixation. Pre- and postoperative radiographs were examined retrospectively to detect changes in the sagittal and coronal plane alignment (posterior tibial slope and MPTA). A multivariate regression analysis was used to identify predictors for a change in MPTA. RESULTS: The study group consisted of 14 women and 24 men whose mean ± SD age at the index procedure was 31.6 ± 8.7 years (range, 17-51 years). Posterior tibial slope decreased significantly (by 7.2° ± 2.3°; P < .001) from 14.6° ± 2.0° preoperatively to 7.4° ± 2.1° postoperatively. MPTA decreased significantly by 1.3° ± 1.5° (P = .005) from pre- to postoperative measurement. Mean wedge height was 9.3 ± 1.1 mm. A lower preoperative MPTA (coefficient = 0.32; P = .017; 95% CI, 0.06-0.59) and larger wedge height (coefficient = 0.48; P = .029; 95% CI, 0.05-0.9) were significant predictive factors for a decrease in MPTA. CONCLUSION: Anterior tibial closing wedge osteotomy for posterior tibial slope reduction resulted in a slight but significant decrease of the MPTA in the coronal plane. These changes were dependent on the preoperative MPTA and the wedge height.

Virtual reality (VR) is a promising tool for training life skills in people with intellectual disabilities. However, there is a lack of evidence surrounding the implementation, suitability, and effectiveness of VR training in this population. The present study investigated the effectiveness of VR training for people with intellectual disabilities by assessing (1) their ability to complete basic tasks in VR, (2) real-world transfer and skill generalisation, and (3) the individual characteristics of participants able to benefit from VR training. Thirty-two participants with an intellectual disability of varying severity completed a waste management training intervention in VR that involved sorting 18 items into three bins. Real-world performance was measured at pre-test, post-test, and delayed time points. The number of VR training sessions varied as training ceased when participants met the learning target (≈ 90% correct). A survival analysis assessed training success probability as a function of the number of training sessions with participants split by their level of adaptive functioning (as measured on the Adaptive Behaviour Assessment System Third Edition). The learning target was met by 19 participants (59.4%) within ten sessions (Mdn = 8.5, IQR 4-10). Real-world performance significantly improved from pre- to post-test and pre- to delayed test. There was no significant difference from post- to delayed test. Further, there was a significant positive relationship between adaptive functioning and change in the real-world assessment from the pre-test to the post- and delayed tests. VR facilitated the learning of most participants, which led to demonstrations of real-world transfer and skill generalisation. The present study identified a relationship between adaptive functioning and success in VR training. The survival curve may assist in planning future studies and training programs.

The UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration calls for upscaling restoration efforts, but many terrestrial restoration projects are constrained by seed availability. To overcome these constraints, wild plants are increasingly propagated on farms to produce seeds for restoration projects. During on-farm propagation, the plants face non-natural conditions with different selection pressures, and they might evolve adaptations to cultivation that parallel those of agricultural crops, which could be detrimental to restoration success. To test this, we compared traits of 19 species grown from wild-collected seeds to those from their farm-propagated offspring of up to four cultivation generations, produced by two European seed growers, in a common garden experiment. We found that some plants rapidly evolved across cultivated generations towards increased size and reproduction, lower within-species variability, and more synchronized flowering. In one species, we found evolution towards less seed shattering. These trait changes are typical signs of the crop domestication syndrome, and our study demonstrates that it can also occur during cultivation of wild plants, within only few cultivated generations. However, there was large variability between cultivation lineages, and the observed effect sizes were generally rather moderate, which suggests that the detected evolutionary changes are unlikely to compromise farm-propagated seeds for ecosystem restoration. To mitigate the potential negative effects of unintended selection, we recommend to limit the maximum number of generations the plants can be cultivated without replenishing the seed stock from new wild collections.

PURPOSE: To determine the prevalence of an "increased posterior tibial slope (PTS)" (PTS ≥ 12°) in a population with one, two or ≥ three anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) graft insufficiencies. Furthermore, to investigate whether the prevalence of an increased PTS and the absolute PTS increases with an increasing number of ACL graft insufficiencies, as well as to determine the survival time of the first ACL graft. METHODS: Patients diagnosed with an ACL graft insufficiency between January 2021 and March 2022 were included. The PTS was measured using the proximal anatomical tibial axis on long lateral knee radiographs. Patients were divided into 3 groups depending on the number of ACL graft insufficiencies: group A (1 graft insufficiency), group B (2 graft insufficiencies) and group C (≥ 3 graft insufficiencies). The prevalence of increased PTS and absolute PTS between groups was compared alongside the survival of the first ACL graft between patients with or without increased PTS. RESULTS: Two-hundred and six patients (147 males/59 females) met the inclusion criteria. 73 patients showed an increased PTS [prevalence 35% [95% confidence interval (CI) (29%; 42%)]. 155 patients were found in category A, 42 patients in B and 9 patients in C. The prevalence of increased PTS for group A, B and C was, 32% [95% CI (25%; 40%)], 38% [95% CI (23%; 53%)] and 78% [95% CI (51%; 100%)], respectively. The prevalence of increased PTS and mean PTS did not increase significantly between group A and B. However, both parameters increased significantly between group A and C, and group B and C (p < 0.05). The survival time of the first ACL graft in patients with or without an increased PTS was 3 (interquartile range (IQR) 5) and 6 years (IQR 9), respectively (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: There is a 35% prevalence of increased PTS in the studied ACL graft insufficient patient cohort. The survival of the first ACL graft is shorter in patients with an increased PTS. Surgeons should be aware of the high prevalence of increased PTS when consulting patients for revision ACL reconstruction as it is an important risk factor for recurrent instability.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to prospectively evaluate the clinical and radiological results of double level osteotomy (distal femoral lateral closed wedge and proximal tibial medial open wedge) in medial osteoarthritis and varus malalignment due to bifocal deformity of femur and tibia. METHODS: From 2017 to 2019 all cases of DLO in osteoarthritic varus malaligned knees with bifocal deformity (femoral and tibial deformity) were prospectively enrolled into this observational therapeutic study. Evaluation was performed preoperatively, at six, twelve, 18 and 24 months with regard to survival (not requiring arthroplasty), functional outcome [subjective International Knee Documentation Committee score (IKDC), Oxford Knee Score (OKS), Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome score (KOOS) and Tegner Activity Scale], pain level (numeric rating scale), subjective satisfaction (rating 1-5), radiographic parameters on a pre-and postoperative full leg x-rays (mechanical axis, mechanical proximal tibial and distal femoral angles) and complications. For statistical evaluation student's t test, Mann-Whitney U test and Wilcoxon-signed-rank test were used. RESULTS: Fifty-two consecutive cases in 48 patients were enrolled in the study. Three cases were excluded, resulting in a follow-up rate of 94%. No arthroplasties were performed within follow-up. All functional outcome scores substantially and significantly increased as early as six months after the index procedure and further increased until final follow-up (p < 0.001). Pain level significantly decreased (p < 0.001). At final follow-up all patients stated that they would retrospectively undergo the operation again, and rated the result with 4.5 ± 0.6 out of 5 (3-5). Radiographic parameters were within physiological limits postoperatively. No severe complications occurred. CONCLUSIONS: Double level osteotomy has excellent short-term results while maintaining physiological radiographic parameters. Therefore, it should be an integral part and standard procedure in realignment surgery for monocompartimental osteoarthritis. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: IV (prospective observational therapeutic study).

Anthropogenic chemicals in freshwater environments contribute majorly to ecosystem degradation and biodiversity decline. In particular anthropogenic organic micropollutants (AOM), a diverse group of compounds, including pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and industrial chemicals, can significantly impact freshwater organisms. AOM were found to impact genetic diversity of freshwater species; however, to which degree AOM cause changes in population genetic structure and allelic richness of freshwater macroinvertebrates remains poorly understood. Here, the impact of AOM on genetic diversity of the common amphipod Gammarus pulex (Linnaeus, 1758) (clade E) was investigated on a regional scale. The site-specific AOM levels and their toxic potentials were determined in water and G. pulex tissue sample extracts for 34 sites along six rivers in central Germany impacted by wastewater effluents and agricultural run-off. Population genetic parameters were determined for G. pulex from the sampling sites by genotyping 16 microsatellite loci. Genetic differentiation among G. pulex from the studied rivers was found to be associated with geographic distance between sites and to differences in site-specific concentrations of AOM. The genetic diversity parameters of G. pulex were found to be related to the site-specific AOM levels. Allelic richness was significantly negatively correlated with levels of AOM in G. pulex tissue (p < 0.003) and was reduced by up to 22% at sites with increased levels of AOM, despite a positive relationship of allelic richness and the presence of waste-water effluent. In addition, the inbreeding coefficient of G. pulex from sites with toxic AOM levels was up to 2.5 times higher than that of G. pulex from more pristine sites. These results indicate that AOM levels commonly found in European rivers significantly contribute to changes in the genetic diversity of an ecologically relevant indicator species.

BACKGROUND: People with Down syndrome face various learning challenges. Introducing new and enjoyable experiences in learning settings may improve learning outcomes. Immersive and interactive technologies such as virtual reality can be used to deliver rich visual experiences in classrooms. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility and benefits of virtual reality exposure for people with Down syndrome in learning settings. METHODS: To address this aim, we used a within-subjects design to assess the effect of a brief virtual reality drawing experience and conventional drawing experience on subsequent behavior in 16 participants. RESULTS: Large positive effects were found for virtual reality drawing (t15=5.020, P<.001) and conventional drawing (t15=3.720, P=.002) in improving subsequent behavior in a learning setting. Irrespective of the intervention, the participant's mood, attention, and overall behavior significantly improved. No significant differences were found between the interventions (t15=-0.648; P=.53). CONCLUSIONS: This study's results are encouraging for researchers and educators interested in using virtual reality for people with Down syndrome, as virtual reality was found to be highly feasible. Recommendations are made for researchers and educators interested in providing virtual reality experiences for people with Down syndrome.

Immersive virtual reality (VR) can cause acute sickness, visual disturbance, and balance impairment. Some manufacturers recommend intermittent breaks to overcome these issues; however, limited evidence examining whether this is beneficial exists. The aim of this study was to examine whether taking breaks during VR gaming reduced its effect on postural sway during standing balance assessments. Twenty-five people participated in this crossover design study, performing 50 min of VR gaming either continuously or with intermittent 10 min exposure/rest intervals. Standing eyes open, two-legged balance assessments were performed immediately pre-, immediately post- and 40 min post-exposure. The primary outcome measure was total path length; secondary measures included independent axis path velocity, amplitude, standard deviation, discrete and continuous wavelet transform-derived variables, and detrended fluctuation analysis. Total path length was significantly (p < 0.05) reduced immediately post-VR gaming exposure in the intermittent rest break group both in comparison to within-condition baseline values and between-condition timepoint results. Conversely, it remained consistent across timepoints in the continuous exposure group. These changes consisted of a more clustered movement speed pattern about a lower central frequency, evidenced by signal frequency content. These findings indicate that caution is required before recommending rest breaks during VR exposure until we know more about how balance and falls risk are affected.

People with neurodevelopmental disorders are often considered unsuitable or incapable of working in open employment. When employment is available, tasks are often limited, and opportunities for career development are restricted. Policy and funding constraints leave people with disabilities without an opportunity to develop skills due to the additional time and costs for employers. To overcome these barriers, virtual environments have been proposed as a safe and reliable solution for training. An important prerequisite for a wider uptake of training in virtual environments are demonstrations that the training leads to improved performance in the real world. This is particularly true for people with neurodevelopmental disorders, as transferring learnings from one context to another can be challenging. A systematic review was conducted to assess whether training in virtual environments can be used to improve real-world vocational skills in people with neurodevelopmental disorders. After a systematic search in six databases, eight out of the initially identified 1,806 articles met the inclusion criteria. The findings from these eight studies demonstrate that people with neurodevelopmental disorders can transfer vocational skills from virtual environments to real-world settings. With substantial technological improvements, a surge in accessibility, and improved affordability, there is a need to build upon the promising results identified in this review.

Anthropogenic micropollutants alter chemical and ecological conditions of freshwater ecosystems and impact aquatic species that live along the pollution gradient of a river. Species sensitivity to micropollutants depends on the site-specific exposure; however, it remains unclear to what degree this sensitivity relates to the species' genetic structure. Here, we explored the relationship between the toxic sensitivity and genetic structure of the amphipod species Gammarus pulex (Linnaeus, 1758) along an organic micropollutant gradient in the Holtemme River in central Germany. We determined the river's site-specific micropollutant patterns and analyzed the genetic structure of G. pulex using nuclear and mitochondrial genetic markers. Furthermore, we examined the exposure sensitivities and bioaccumulation of the commonly detected insecticide imidacloprid in G. pulex from different sites. Our results show that throughout the Holtemme River, G. pulex forms a well-connected and homogeneous population with no observable pollution-related differences in the genetic structure. However, G. pulex from polluted sites responded more sensitively to imidacloprid; survival times for half of the amphipods were up to 54% shorter, the percentage of immobile individuals increased up to 65%, and the modeled imidacloprid depuration rate was lower in comparison to amphipods from non-polluted sites. Altogether, these results suggest that the level of sensitivity of G. pulex amphipods to micropollutants in the river depends on the degree of pollution: amphipods may thrive in food-rich but polluted habitats; yet, their sensitivity is increased when chronically exposed to organic micropollutants.

BACKGROUND: Virtual reality (VR) exergaming has the potential to target sedentary behavior. Immersive environments can distract users from the physical exertion of exercise and can motivate them to continue exergaming. Despite the recent surge in VR popularity, numerous users still experience VR sickness from using head-mounted displays (HMDs). Apart from the commonly assessed self-reported symptoms, depth perception and cognition may also be affected. Considering the potential benefits of VR exergaming, it is crucial to identify the adverse effects limiting its potential and continued uptake. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate the consequences of playing one of the most popular VR exergames for 10 and 50 min on aspects of vision, cognition, and self-reported VR sickness. METHODS: A total of 36 participants played an exergame, called Beat Saber, using an HMD. A repeated measures within-subject design was conducted to assess changes in vision, cognition, and well-being after short (10 min) and long (50 min) durations of VR exposure. We measured accommodation, convergence, decision speed, movement speed, and self-reported sickness at 3 test periods-before VR, immediately after VR, and 40 min after VR (late). RESULTS: Beat Saber was well tolerated, as there were no dropouts due to sickness. For most participants, any immediate aftereffects were short-lived and returned to baseline levels after 40 min of exiting VR. For both short and long exposures, there were changes in accommodation (F1,35=8.424; P=.006) and convergence (F1,35=7.826; P=.008); however, in the late test period, participants returned to baseline levels. Measures on cognition revealed no concern. The total simulator sickness questionnaire (SSQ) scores increased immediately after VR (F1,35=26.515; P<.001) and were significantly higher for long compared with short exposures (t35=2.807; P=.03), but there were no differences in exposure duration in the late test period, with scores returning to baseline levels. Although at a group level, participants' sickness levels returned to baseline 40 min after VR exposure, approximately 14% of the participants still reported high levels of sickness in the late test period after playing 50 min of Beat Saber. We also showed that the participants who experienced a high level of sickness after a short exposure were almost certain to experience a high level of symptoms after a longer exposure. CONCLUSIONS: Irrespective of the duration of exposure, this study found no strong evidence for adverse symptoms 40 min after exiting VR; however, some individuals still reported high levels of VR sickness at this stage. We recommend that users commit to a waiting period after exiting VR to ensure that any aftereffects have deteriorated. Exergames in HMDs have the potential to encourage people to exercise but are understudied, and the aftereffects of exergaming need to be closely monitored to ensure that VR exergames can reach their full potential.

BACKGROUND: Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) suture anchors are frequently used in Bankart shoulder stabilisation. This study analyzed the primary stability and revisability of PEEK anchors in-vitro in case of primary Bankart repair and revision Bankart repair after failed primary repair. METHODS: To simulate primary Bankart repair, 12 anchors (Arthrex PEEK PushLock® 3.5 mm) were implanted in 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11 o'clock positions in cadaveric human glenoids and then cyclically tested. To simulate revision Bankart repair, 12 anchors were implanted in the same manner, over-drilled and 12 new anchors of the same diameter were implanted into the same bone socket as the primary anchors and then cyclically tested. The maximum failure loads (Fmax), system displacements, force at clinical failure and modes of failure were recorded. RESULTS: One primary anchor failed prematurely due to a technical problem. Three out of 12 revision anchors (25%) dislocated while setting the 25 N preload. The Fmax, the displacement and clinical failure of the remaining 9 revision anchors were non-significant when compared to the 11 primary repair anchors. The main mode of failure in the primary and revision Bankart surgery group was suture slippage. Anchor dislocations were observed four times in the primary and once in the revision repair groups. CONCLUSIONS: Revision Bankart repair using PEEK anchors of the same diameter in a pre-existing bone socket is possible but bears high risk of premature anchor failure and can jeopardize the reconstruction. PEEK suture anchor in revision Bankart surgery should be implanted in a new bone socket if possible.

In many settings, sports training can be difficult to organize, logistically complicated and very costly. Virtual environments (VE) have garnered interest as a tool to train real-world sports skills due to the realism and flexibility that they can deliver. A key assumption of VE-based training is that the learned skills and experiences transfer to the real world, but do they? Using PRISMA guidelines, this systematic review evaluated the available evidence regarding the transfer of motor skills from VE training to real-world sporting contexts. The initial search identified 448 articles, but only 4 of these articles met basic criteria necessary to assess real-world transfer. Key factors regarding the study design, learner characteristics and training environment of these studies are considered. In a relatively new area of research, the findings from these 4 articles are encouraging and provide initial support for the notion that skills training in a VE can improve real-world performance in sports. However, for a wider uptake of VEs in sports training, it is important that more research demonstrates real-world transfer. Study design recommendations are suggested for researchers, developers or trainers who are considering demonstrating real-world transfers from virtual to real-world environments.

The freshwater amphipod species Gammarus pulex (Linnaeus, 1758) is widespread across Europe and Asia and is able to live in a broad range of environmental conditions. Yet, it is of great interest to which degree it is able to tolerate and adapt to the current rapid anthropogenic environmental changes affecting its habitat, such as pollution, changes in river morphology, and invasions of alien gammarid species. Microsatellite primers for genetic population studies with G. pulex have been developed but due to the existence of several genetically different lineages within the species, the application of these primers is not always successful. In order to investigate the impacts of anthropogenic environmental changes on the spatio-genetic patterns of G. pulex lineage E in streams in the Saale river catchment in Germany, we designed eleven novel polymorphic microsatellites for this lineage using a high-throughput sequencing approach. These microsatellites enabled highly specific characterization of three closely related populations. The results show genetically distinct populations reflected by both a principal coordinates analysis and an analysis of molecular variance. Several of the newly designed microsatellite primers also enabled successful cross-amplification of the respective microsatellites in specimens of G. pulex lineage C, while only two microsatellites were amplified successfully and showed polymorphisms for all of the analyzed specimens of G. fossarum Koch, 1836. The microsatellites identified here are suitable for future assessments of micro-evolutionary dynamics of G. pulex from central Germany.
