RESUMEN

The application of hydroxyapatite (HA)-based templates is quite often seen in bone tissue engineering since that HA is an osteoconductive bioceramic material, which mimics the inorganic component of mineralized tissues. However, the reported osteoconductivity varies in vitro and in vivo, and the levels of calcium (Ca) release most favorable to osteoconduction have yet to be determined. In this study, HA-based templates were fabricated by melt-extrusion 3D-printing and characterized in order to determine a possible correlation between Ca release and osteoconduction. The HA-based templates were blended with poly(lactide-co-trimethylene carbonate) (PLATMC) at three different HA ratios: 10, 30, and 50%. The printability and physical properties of the HA templates were compared with those of pristine PLATMC. In vitro, osteoconductivity was assessed using seeded human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells. A mild rate of Ca release was observed for HA10 templates, which exhibited higher mineralized extracellular matrix (ECM) secretion than PLATMC at 14 and 21 days. In contrast, the high rate of Ca release exhibited by HA30 and HA50 templates was associated with reduced osteoconduction and impeded mineralized ECM secretion in vitro. Similar results were observed in vivo. In the calvarial defect model in rabbit, PLATMC and HA10 templates exhibited the highest amount of new bone formation, with obvious contact osteogenesis on their surfaces. In contrast, HA30 and HA50 exhibited distant osteogenesis and reduced amounts of new bone ingrowth. It is concluded that HA-based templates are osteoconductive only at low rates of Ca release.

Background In applied sciences, statistical models are pivotal for uncovering relationships in complex datasets. The applied linear model establishes associative links between variables. While qualitative predictors are essential, their integration into linear models poses challenges. The dummy variable approach transforms qualitative variables into binary ones for regression analysis. Multilayer Feedforward Neural Networks (MLFFNN) offer validation of regression models, and fuzzy regression offers alternative methods to address the ambiguity of qualitative predictors. This study aims to enhance the integration of qualitative predictors in applied linear models through statistical methodologies. Material and methods This study design involves the transformation of qualitative predictors into dummy variables, the bootstrapping technique to improve the parameter estimates, the Multilayer Feedforward Neural Network, and fuzzy regression. This study uses the programming language R as an analysis tool. Results The multiple linear regression model demonstrates precision and a significant fit (p<0.05), with an R-squared value of 0.95 and mean square error (MSE) of 9.97. Comparing actual and predicted values, fuzzy regression exhibits superior predictability over linear regression. The MLFFNN yields a reduced MSE net of 0.362, indicating enhanced prediction precision for derived models. Conclusion This study presents a precise methodology for integrating qualitative variables into linear regression, supported by the combination of specific statistical methodologies to enhance predictive modeling. By integrating fuzzy linear regression, MLFF neural networks, and bootstrapping, the proposed technique emerges as the most effective approach for modeling and prediction. These findings underscore the efficacy of this method in seamlessly integrating qualitative variables into linear models, ultimately enhancing accuracy and prediction capabilities.

Background Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is a common medical condition that affects a significant portion of the global population. It is a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases (CVD), stroke, and kidney disorders. Objective The objective of this study is to create and validate a model that combines bootstrapping, ordered logistic regression, and multilayer feed-forward neural networks (MLFFNN) to identify and analyze the factors associated with hypertension patients who also have dyslipidemia. Material and methods A total of 33 participants were enrolled from the Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) for this study. In this study, advanced computational statistical modeling techniques were utilized to examine the relationship between hypertension status and several potential predictors. The RStudio (Posit, Boston, MA) software and syntax were implemented to establish the relationship between hypertension status and the predictors. Results The statistical analysis showed that the developed methodology demonstrates good model fitting through the value of predicted mean square error (MSE), mean absolute deviance (MAD), and accuracy. To evaluate model fitting, the data in this study was divided into distinct training and testing datasets. The findings revealed that the results strongly support the superior predictive capability of the hybrid model technique. In this case, five variables are considered: marital status, smoking status, systolic blood pressure, fasting blood sugar levels, and high-density lipoprotein levels. It is important to note that all of them affect the hazard ratio: marital status (ß1, -17.12343343; p < 0.25), smoking status (ß2, 1.86069121; p < 0.25), systolic blood pressure (ß3, 0.05037332; p < 0.25), fasting blood sugar (ß4, -0.53880322; p < 0.25), and high-density lipoprotein (ß5, 5.38065556; p < 0.25). Conclusion This research aims to develop and extensively evaluate the hybrid approach. The statistical methods employed in this study using R language show that regression modeling surpasses R-squared values in predicting the mean square error. The study's conclusion provides strong evidence for the superiority of the hybrid model technique.

This study is aimed to determine knowledge and practices on radiation protection among radiographers in nuclear medicine department. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among radiographers in nuclear medicine departments in four health institutions in Malaysia. A set of questionnaires was distributed to 17 respondents using convenience sampling. Approximately more than 75% and 44% - 56% of the radiographers have good knowledge of radiation protection and frequent adherence to radiation protection practices, respectively. Levels of education and length of service were statistically correlated with radiation protection knowledge and practices attributes (p < 0.05), respectively. More training is necessary for knowledge and practice improvement.

The present study focuses on ileosigmoid knotting (ISK), an infrequent but potentially lethal surgical emergency. ISK is more frequently observed in males and is prevalent in regions with high rates of sigmoid volvulus. The current medical scenario revolves around the intricate intertwining of the ileum and sigmoid colon, leading to a complicated volvulus. This condition often results in acute intestinal obstruction, which can subsequently cause bowel necrosis. The clinical presentation of the condition is characterized by symptoms such as abdominal distention, pain, vomiting, and obstipation, which can be misleading as they are similar to other common abdominal conditions. A delay in definitive diagnosis and intervention is likely, which can lead to severe consequences such as peritonitis, bowel necrosis, sepsis, and even septic shock. Our case report discusses an instance of ISK presenting as an acute abdomen requiring an emergency laparotomy and detorsion of the volvulus-knotted segment, followed by an elective sigmoidectomy. The significance of a heightened level of suspicion, prompt decision-making, and timely surgical intervention in achieving better patient outcomes cannot be overstated. The objective is to enhance the medical community's understanding of ISK, focusing on early diagnosis and effective treatment of this rare but life-threatening disease.

Objectives: Clinical reasoning (CR) is important in health professions, because it ensures patient safety and decreases morbidity. CR should be introduced early in medical school. Health educators play a major role in advocating for the use of CR among students; however, educators themselves can be a barrier to the incorporation of CR; consequently, CR training sessions for educators have been proposed as a potential solution. This scoping review was conducted to highlight studies on CR training among health educators. Methods: A scoping review was performed to identify studies on CR training sessions for health educators. PubMed, SciVerse Scopus, Web of Science Core Collection, EBSCO Medline Complete and ERIC databases were searched with terms including clinical reasoning, diagnostic reasoning, teacher and trainer, to identify articles published between 1991 and 2021. Results: The initial search yielded 6587 articles; after careful selection, n = 12 articles were included in this scoping review. Most CR training sessions were in the medical field, were conducted in North America, and involved clinical educators. The sessions focused on the fundamentals and steps of CR; biases and debiasing strategies; and learners' difficulties with various teaching formats, such as didactic presentations, facilitated small group sessions with case discussions, roleplay, and use of tools and a mobile application. Educators and students had positive perceptions regarding the conduct and effectiveness of the training sessions. Conclusions: These training sessions were rated highly; however, longitudinal feedback regarding the application of learnt CR teaching strategies is necessary.

Objectives: Anatomy is a fundamental pillar of medical knowledge that bridges basic medical science knowledge and clinical practice. However, integrated modern medical curricula have reduced the anatomy teaching content, and cadaveric dissection is no longer conducted. Medical graduates who lack anatomy knowledge are anticipated to be inadequately equipped for safe clinical practice. This study was aimed at exploring clinical year students' experiences regarding their anatomy learning during the preclinical phase in Malaysian medical schools. The findings reflect how the students' preclinical anatomy training prepared them for their clinical years of study. Methods: A qualitative phenomenology study using the focus group discussion method was conducted on 30 final-year students from four public universities. Four focus group discussion sessions were conducted, and students' responses were transcribed and converted to electronic formats. The transcripts were analyzed thematically with ATLAS.ti software. Results: The first-cycle coding of the text analysis generated 157 open codes based on the phrases used by the participants. The subsequent coding cycle produced 16 axial codes-groups of open codes with similar features. During the final coding cycle, the content and interrelations between the axial codes were categorized into six codes: (1) preclinical anatomy learning experience, (2) anatomy content and teaching, (3) anatomy-related competency, (4) the importance of anatomy knowledge in clinical practice, (5) the importance of early exposure to applied clinical anatomy, and (6) suggestions for future anatomy education. Conclusions: The six identified themes reflected students' perceptions of their anatomy learning experience, the challenges that they faced during their preclinical years, and their opinions regarding the anatomy knowledge and skills that are functionally relevant during the clinical years. Their responses also echoed the need to improve anatomy teaching and learning, thereby emphasizing the importance of early clinical integration and application.

We report the case of a 44-year-old gentleman who underwent coarctation repair at the age of 7 years. He was lost to follow-up and represented. Computed tomography scan demonstrated a 9.8-cm diameter aortic aneurysm involving the distal aortic arch and proximal descending aorta. Open surgery was performed to repair the aneurysm. The patient made an unremarkable recovery. He was followed up 12 weeks later, and significant improvement in preoperative symptoms was observed. This case demonstrates the importance of long-term follow-up.

Introduction: During airway infection, upregulation of proinflammatory cytokines and subsequent immune cell recruitment is essential to mitigate bacterial infection. Conversely, during prolonged and non-resolving airway inflammation, neutrophils contribute to tissue damage and remodeling. This occurs during diseases including cystic fibrosis (CF) and COPD where bacterial pathogens, not least Pseudomonas aeruginosa, contribute to disease progression through long-lasting infections. Tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) 5 is a metalloenzyme expressed by alveolar macrophages and one of its target substrates is the phosphoglycoprotein osteopontin (OPN). Methods: We used a knockout mouse strain (Trap5-/-) and BALB/c-Tg (Rela-luc)31Xen mice paired with siRNA administration or functional protein add-back to elucidate the role of Trap5 during bacterial infection. In a series of experiments, Trap5-/- and wild-type control mice received intratracheal administration of P.aerugniosa (Xen41) or LPS, with mice monitored using intravital imaging (IVIS). In addition, multiplex cytokine immunoassays, flow cytometry, multispectral analyses, histological staining were performed. Results: In this study, we found that Trap5-/- mice had impaired clearance of P. aeruginosa airway infection and reduced recruitment of immune cells (i.e. neutrophils and inflammatory macrophages). Trap5 knockdown using siRNA resulted in a decreased activation of the proinflammatory transcription factor NF-κB in reporter mice and a subsequent decrease of proinflammatory gene expression. Add-back experiments of enzymatically active TRAP5 to Trap5-/- mice restored immune cell recruitment and bacterial killing. In human CF lung tissue, TRAP5 of alveolar macrophages was detected in proximity to OPN to a higher degree than in normal lung tissue, indicating possible interactions. Discussion: Taken together, the findings of this study suggest a key role for TRAP5 in modulating airway inflammation. This could have bearing in diseases such as CF and COPD where excessive neutrophilic inflammation could be targeted by pharmacological inhibitors of TRAP5.

BACKGROUND: Cavernous venous malformation is an uncommon entity that occurs in around 0.5% of the general population. Cerebellar cavernous venous malformation accounts for 1.2-11.8% of intracranial cavernous venous malformation cases. Patients are commonly asymptomatic until a hemorrhage occurs. In approximately 20% of the cases, cavernous venous malformation and developmental venous anomalies occur together, called mixed vascular malformation. Our case report reveals the imaging features of the mixed vascular malformation and highlights the appropriate imaging modality and sequence to detect the abnormalities. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 15-year-old Malay male, a healthy young male who presented with dizziness, vomiting, and mild headache for 1 month. Computed tomography brain imaging at presentation revealed cerebellar hemorrhage with multiple cavernous venous malformation and coexisting developmental venous anomalies, which was then confirmed by magnetic resonance imaging. The patient was started on dexamethasone 4 mg four times a day, observed in the ward, and discharged well without neurological sequelae. CONCLUSION: A cavernous malformation with concurrent developmental venous anomalies requires accurate diagnosis. Our case report contributes to the literature on the imaging diagnosis of this disease, which is beneficial for current and future reference.

BACKGROUND: The efficacy and safety of prophylactic full-dose anticoagulation and antiplatelet therapy in critically ill COVID-19 patients remain uncertain. METHODS: COVID-PACT (Prevention of Arteriovenous Thrombotic Events in Critically-ill COVID-19 Patients Trial) was a multicenter, 2×2 factorial, open-label, randomized-controlled trial with blinded end point adjudication in intensive care unit-level patients with COVID-19. Patients were randomly assigned to a strategy of full-dose anticoagulation or standard-dose prophylactic anticoagulation. Absent an indication for antiplatelet therapy, patients were additionally randomly assigned to either clopidogrel or no antiplatelet therapy. The primary efficacy outcome was the hierarchical composite of death attributable to venous or arterial thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, clinically evident deep venous thrombosis, type 1 myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke, systemic embolic event or acute limb ischemia, or clinically silent deep venous thrombosis, through hospital discharge or 28 days. The primary efficacy analyses included an unmatched win ratio and time-to-first event analysis while patients were on treatment. The primary safety outcome was fatal or life-threatening bleeding. The secondary safety outcome was moderate to severe bleeding. Recruitment was stopped early in March 2022 (≈50% planned recruitment) because of waning intensive care unit-level COVID-19 rates. RESULTS: At 34 centers in the United States, 390 patients were randomly assigned between anticoagulation strategies and 292 between antiplatelet strategies (382 and 290 in the on-treatment analyses). At randomization, 99% of patients required advanced respiratory therapy, including 15% requiring invasive mechanical ventilation; 40% required invasive ventilation during hospitalization. Comparing anticoagulation strategies, a greater proportion of wins occurred with full-dose anticoagulation (12.3%) versus standard-dose prophylactic anticoagulation (6.4%; win ratio, 1.95 [95% CI, 1.08-3.55]; P=0.028). Results were consistent in time-to-event analysis for the primary efficacy end point (full-dose versus standard-dose incidence 19/191 [9.9%] versus 29/191 [15.2%]; hazard ratio, 0.56 [95% CI, 0.32-0.99]; P=0.046). The primary safety end point occurred in 4 (2.1%) on full dose and in 1 (0.5%) on standard dose (P=0.19); the secondary safety end point occurred in 15 (7.9%) versus 1 (0.5%; P=0.002). There was no difference in all-cause mortality (hazard ratio, 0.91 [95% CI, 0.56-1.48]; P=0.70). There were no differences in the primary efficacy or safety end points with clopidogrel versus no antiplatelet therapy. CONCLUSIONS: In critically ill patients with COVID-19, full-dose anticoagulation, but not clopidogrel, reduced thrombotic complications with an increase in bleeding, driven primarily by transfusions in hemodynamically stable patients, and no apparent excess in mortality. OBJECTIVES: To assess the immunohistochemistry phenotype of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) in breast cancer (BC) and to correlate it with histological and clinical prognostic factors. METHODS: This retrospective study utilized COX-2 monoclonal antibody in an immunohistochemistry staining of tissue microarrays slides of 570 cases of previously diagnosed BC and with 52 of normal breast tissues from breast specimens resected for benign lesions or reconstruction (fibroadenoma and normal breast epithelium). This project was carried out in the Laboratory of pathology, King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, between September 2019 and September 2021. RESULTS: The present data showed an important connection between the COX-2 expression phenotype and BC compared to benign breast tissues (p=0.034). The expression pattern of COX-2 was allied significantly with some factors which distinguished aggressive subtypes of BC, such as stage, distant metastases, lymphovascular invasion, and poor survival. CONCLUSION: Cyclooxygenase-2 is a valuable marker that could facilitate BC diagnosis and prognosis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of this review is to summarize the impacts of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on aquaculture input supply, production, distribution, and consumption. RECENT FINDINGS: The COVID-19 pandemic-related lockdowns, social distancing, supply chain disruptions, and transport restrictions affect seafood production, distribution, marketing, and consumption. Recommendations are suggested to overcome these challenges. The COVID-19 has led to disruption of aquaculture practices worldwide. The pandemic has adversely affected the aquaculture input supply of fish stocking and feeding, which, in turn, has impacted aquaculture production. Moreover, the COVID-19 crisis has had adverse effects on value addition to aquaculture products, through the restrictions of seafood marketing and exporting. Aquatic food production is vulnerable to the effects of COVID-19 outbreak; hence, adaptation strategies must be developed to cope with the challenges. There is an urgent need for collaboration among key stakeholders to rebuild the supply chain of inputs and fish marketing for sustainable aquaculture practices. International agencies, donors, government and non-governmental organizations, researchers, and policymakers need to develop policies to support aquaculture production and supply chains.

Climate action was among one of the main targets for the United Nation Sustainable Development Goals (i.e. UN SDG: 13), which is to "take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts". The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is also concurred to improve climate change's mitigation and adaptation strategies along with the SDG's goals. Thermal tolerance has been proposed as one of the possible adaptation strategies for animals affected by anthropogenic effects and excess heat from climate change. However, no scientometrics analysis of thermal tolerance research has been conducted to date. As a result, the goal of this study was to gather information from the literature to determine the current state of thermal tolerance, development trends, and current research. Researchers will be able to better understand the trends and development of the thematic research area of thermal tolerance by using scientometric analysis to generate data on thermal tolerance. For frequency, co-occurrence, co-citation, clustering, and burst analysis, CiteSpace software was used. The scientometric review of thermal tolerance studies from 1970 to 2021 (5243 studies) reveals significant increases in the size of the literature, the frequency of citations, and the hotspots investigated. Susan Lindquist and the Journal of Thermal Biology are the most influential authors and journals, respectively. The most common clusters related to the thematic area of thermal tolerance are oxygen consumption and heat shock protein, with climate change and temperature being one of the most popular keywords. We concluded that, along with the thriving field and climate change issues, thermal tolerance is becoming one of the future research interests. In addition, knowing the current trends and developments of thermal tolerance in aquatic species is important for various stakeholders.

INTRODUCTION: Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumour (MPNST) is an uncommon malignant neoplasm of childhood with unfavourable prognosis. Only a limited number of cases have been reported in children less than 12 years of age, and approximately one-half arise from a benign peripheral nerve sheath tumour, especially in the background of neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). Primary MPNST in children is even rarer. CASE REPORT: A 3-year-old Malay girl presented with painful right axillary swelling for six months, initially treated as axillary lymphadenitis and she defaulted follow up. She came back four months later with enlargement of the swelling. The previous biopsy was reported as Schwannoma, which correlates with a benign peripheral nerve sheath tumour's MRI findings. The final diagnosis after debulking surgery was consistent with MPNST. She succumbed to death 20 months after her initial diagnosis of advanced MPNST and lung metastasis. PATHOLOGICAL FINDINGS: Grossly, a huge partly circumscribed soft tissue mass was noted arising from a nerve with a solid greyish yellowish myxoid cut surface. Spindle-shaped cells arranged in a herringbone pattern alternated with areas of myxoid hypocellular areas exhibited marked pleomorphism, brisk mitosis, and extensive necrosis are seen microscopically. Immunohistochemistry shows patchy S100 protein staining with loss of expression of H3K27me3. CONCLUSION: Although MPNST is rare in the paediatric age group, the diagnosis should be considered in children without NF1 with a rapidly evolving and painful mass in the peripheral nerve distribution. In this case, the diagnosis was delayed and made after surgery. Due to its morphologic heterogeneity and lack of specific immunohistochemical markers, MPNST remains a diagnostic challenge.

Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole is an active agent against Burkholderia pseudomallei and is being used in intensive and maintenance phases of melioidosis therapy. In this study, we evaluated the bactericidal activities of ß-lactams (imipenem, ceftazidime and amoxicillin- clavulanate) alone and in combinations with trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole against B. pseudomallei . Four clinical strains of B. pseudomallei were selected based on different genotypes that are frequently found in Malaysia. The minimum inhibitory concentrations of trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, ceftazidime, imipenem and amoxicillin-clavulanate were determined using microdilution broth method. The bactericidal activities and synergy effects of ß-lactams and/or trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole were evaluated by checkerboard and static time-kill analyses at 1×MIC concentration of each antibiotic. Using checkerboard method, the ß-lactam/trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole combinations exhibited ΣFIC of 0.75-4.00. In time-kill analysis, ceftazidime/trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole combination demonstrated synergy against three strains (less 2.25-2.41 log 10 CFU/mL compared to the most active antibiotic monotherapy) whereas imipenem/trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole combination regimen showed synergy against one strain (less 3.32 log 10 CFU/mL). No antagonist effect or major re-growth was observed in all combination regimens, whereas 11 out of 12 of ß-lactam monotherapy regimens were associated with re-growth of bacteria. However, all ß-lactam monotherapy regimens exhibited rapid and stronger killing activities against BUPS/07/14, in the initial 12 hours compared to ß-lactam/ trimethoprim- sulfamethoxazole combination regimens. The combination of ß-lactams with trimethoprim- sulfamethoxazole demonstrated better killing effect at 24 hours compared to monotherapy and no major bacterial regrowth was observed. Nevertheless, delay in killing activities of ß-lactam/trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole combination regimens against BUPS/07/14 need further examination because this phenomenon can lead to treatment failure in some patients.

BACKGROUND: Surgical site infections (SSIs) following lower extremity amputations (LEAs) are a major cause of patient morbidity and mortality. The objectives of this study are to investigate the annual incidence of SSI and risk factors associated with SSI after LEA in diabetic patients. METHODS: LEAs performed on diabetic patients between 2005 and 2017 were retrospectively analyzed from the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database. Incidence rates were calculated and analyzed for temporal change. Multivariable logistic regression was conducted to identify the independent predictors of SSIs in LEA. RESULTS: In 21,449 diabetic patients, the incidence of SSIs was 6.8% after LEA, with an overall decreasing annual trend (P = 0.013). Amputation location (below-knee in reference to above-knee) [OR (95% CI): 1.35 (1.20 - 1.53), P <0.001], smoking [OR (95% CI): 1.25 (1.11 - 1.41), P <0.001)], female sex [OR (95% CI): 1.16 (1.03 - 1.30)], preoperative sepsis [OR (95% CI): 1.24 (1.10 - 1.40), P <0.001], P = 0.013], emergency status [OR (95% CI): 1.38 (1.17 - 1.63), P <0.001], and obesity [OR (95% CI): 1.59 (1.12 - 2.27), P = 0.009] emerged as independent predictors of SSIs, while moderate/severe anemia emerged as a risk-adjusted protective factor [OR (95% CI): 0.75 (0.62 - 0.91), P = 0.003]. Sensitivity analysis found that moderate/severe anemia, not body mass index (BMI) class, remained a significant risk factor in the development of SSIs in below-the-knee amputations; in contrast, higher BMI, not preoperative hematocrit, was significantly associated with an increased risk for SSI in above-the-knee amputations. CONCLUSIONS: The incidence of SSIs after LEA in diabetic patients is decreasing. Overall, below-knee amputation, smoking, emergency status, and preoperative sepsis appeared to be associated with SSIs. Obesity increased SSIs in above-the-knee amputations, while moderate/severe preoperative anemia appears to protect against below-the-knee SSIs. Surgeons should take predictors of SSI into consideration while optimizing care for their patients, and future studies should investigate the role of preoperative hematocrit correction and how it may influence outcomes positively or negatively.

Some of Vibrio species is well known as pathogenic bacteria in aquaculture and the marine industry. Its infection is able to generate a massive outbreak and affect the fish population, especially for net caged fish such as seabass. This study was conducted to investigate the prevalence of Vibrio spp. isolated from seabass (Lates calcarifer) in Sri Tujuh Lagoon, Tumpat, Kelantan. Then, to determine the antibiotic resistance in Vibrio isolates. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to detect Vibrio species using specific primer VR169 and VR744 with estimation base pair size band, 597 bp and further identified by sequencing. On the other hand, antibiotic susceptibility tests were continued by using 13 types of antibiotics; kanamycin (K30), chloramphenicol (C30), neomycin (N10), ampicillin (AMP10), nitrofurantoin (F300), tetracycline (TE30), streptomycin (S10), norfloxacin (NOR10), ciprofloxacin (CIP5), nalidixic acid (NA30), gentamicin (CN10), doxycycline (DO30) and sulfamethoxazole (SXT100). As a result, 14 Vibrio isolates were identified, including Vibrio fluvialis (n=6), Vibrio parahaemolyticus (n=3), Vibrio harveyi (n=2) and each isolate for Vibrio vulnificus, Vibrio alginolyticus and Vibrio spp. The results showed that all isolates were sensitive to most antibiotics except ampicillin, neomycin and streptomycin. The MAR index value was ranging from 0 to 0.31. This study demonstrates the prevalence of Vibrio spp. in seabass and the report on multidrug resistance strains that could be of concern to the fish farmers. In addition, data from this study can be further used in fish disease management plans.

COVID-19 has spread rapidly worldwide. The role of fomites in facilitating onward transmission is plausible. This study aimed to determine the presence of viable virus and its persistence on the surfaces of fomites in wards treating COVID-19 patients in Malaysia. This study was conducted in two stages. First, environmental sampling was performed on random days in the intensive care unit (ICU) and general wards. Then, in the second stage, samples were collected serially on alternate days for 7 days in two selected general wards. In Stage 1, a total of 104 samples were collected from the surfaces of highly touched and used areas by patients and healthcare workers. Only three samples were tested positive for SARS-COV-2. In Stage 2, three surface samples were detected positive, but no persistence of the virus was observed. However, none of the SARS-CoV-2 RNA was viable through tissue culture. Overall, the environmental contamination of SARS-CoV-2 was low in this hospital setting. Hospitals' strict infection control and the compliance of patients with wearing masks may have played a role in these findings, suggesting adherence to those measures to reduce occupational exposure of COVID-19 in hospital settings.

STUDY DESIGN: Randomized experimental study. OBJECTIVE: Compared to able-bodied people, patients with paraplegia due to thoracic spinal cord injury (SCI) are at an increased risk of heat illnesses during exercise due to impaired thermoregulatory responses. To overcome this limitation, we investigated the performance of three phase change material (PCM) cooling vests of different melting temperatures (Eijsvogels, #49) and coverage area of the trunk. METHODS: Sixteen participants were divided into three groups according to their injury level. All were tested for V20 full vest (20°C Tm, 75% coverage). Mid-thoracic and high-thoracic groups were tested for V14 vest (14°C Tm, 75% coverage). The mid-thoracic group was tested for V20 half vest (20°C Tm, 50% coverage). The participants performed a 30-min arm-crank exercise followed by a recovery period inside a controlled hot climatic chamber. The heart rate, segmental skin (Tskin), and core temperature (Tcore) values were recorded, and subjective questionnaires were taken. RESULTS: Compared to no vest (NV) test, all the vests showed an effective decrease in Tskin values of the trunk. However, the decrease in Tskin was not enough to induce a significant decrease in Tcore in all three groups. Mid-thoracic and low-thoracic groups showed a reduction in the increasing Tcore by the end of the exercise and recovery period. Finally, the level of thermal comfort was enhanced for the three groups. CONCLUSION: The effectiveness of cooling vests for persons with paraplegia is dependent on injury level and thus the ratio of sensate to insensate skin. Future studies necessitate the investigation of the cooling effects of PCM vests at a lower Tm with a larger sample size.
