RESUMEN

This study documents the anatomy of the deep attachments of the superficial fasciae within the temporal and periorbital regions. A highly organized and consistent three-dimensional connective tissue framework supports the overlying skin and soft tissues in these areas. The regional nerves and vessels display constant and predictable relationships with both the fascial planes and their ligamentous attachments. Knowledge of these relationships allows the surgeon to use the tissue planes and soft-tissue ligaments as intraoperative landmarks for the vital neurovascular structures. This results in improved efficiency and safety for aesthetic procedures in these regions.

RESUMEN

Lipoplasty (i.e., liposuction) is the most commonly performed cosmetic surgical procedure in the United States. During the past 20 years, there have been dramatic technological advancements in both surgical technique and equipment used to improve postoperative outcomes. As a result, perioperative nurses are faced with the challenge of providing quality care for this patient population in a variety of ambulatory surgical settings with highly specialized equipment. Perioperative team members play significant roles in the coordination of individualized patient-focused care, which includes detailed instructions and education, appropriate use and care of equipment, and postoperative follow-up. The efforts of the team members contribute to positive surgical outcomes, as well as to overall patient satisfaction.

RESUMEN

Prespore-specific antigen (PsA) is a putative cell-adhesion molecule of the cellular slime mould Dictyostelium discoideum, which has a similar molecular architecture to several mammalian cell-surface proteins. It has an N-terminal globular domain presented to the extracellular environment on an O-glycosylated stem (glycopeptide) that is attached to the cell membrane through a glycosyl-PtdIns anchor. The sequence of PsA suggests that PsA may belong to a new family of cell-surface molecules and here we present information on the structure of the N-terminal globular domain and determine the reducing-terminal linkage of the O-glycosylation. To obtain a sufficient amount of pure protein, a secreted recombinant form of PsA (rPsA), was expressed in D. discoideum and characterised. 1H-NMR spectra of rPsA contained features consistent with a high degree of beta-sheet in the N-terminal globular domain, a feature commonly observed in cell-adhesion proteins. Solid-phase Edman degradation of the glycopeptide of rPsA indicated that 14 of the 15 threonines and serines in the spacer region were glycosylated. The chemical structures of the O-glycosylations were determined to be single N-acetylglucosamine residues.

RESUMEN

The pneuPAC Model 2-R pneumatic logic ventilator with a new air entrainment valve that offers the option of an FIO2 of 1.0 or 0.45 is described. Its robustness, portability, variable FIO2, choice of positive end expiratory pressure and pressure relief valves make it versatile and suitable for transporting critically ill patients, as well as for resuscitation use when adverse conditions may be encountered. Two new medical air compressors, one mains driven and the other battery powered, designed for use with the ventilator, are also described. The function of the ventilator with the new valve was assessed using a piped gas supply and then reassessed when powered by the compressors.
