RESUMEN

Alkaline earth metal oxide (MgO, CaO, SrO) catalysts supported on BEA zeolite were prepared by a wet impregnation method and tested in the transesterification reaction of rapeseed oil with methanol towards the formation of biodiesel (FAMEs-fatty acid methyl esters). To assess the influence of the SiO2/Al2O3 ratio on the catalytic activity in the tested reaction, a BEA zeolite carrier material with different Si/Al ratios was used. The prepared catalysts were tested in the transesterification reaction at temperatures of 180 °C and 220 °C using a molar ratio of methanol/oil reagents of 9:1. The transesterification process was carried out for 2 h with the catalyst mass of 0.5 g. The oil conversion value and efficiency towards FAME formation were determined using the HPLC technique. The physicochemical properties of the catalysts were determined using the following research techniques: CO2-TPD, XRD, BET, FTIR, and SEM-EDS. The results of the catalytic activity showed that higher activity in the tested process was confirmed for the catalysts supported on the BEA zeolite characterized by the highest silica/alumina ratio for the reaction carried out at a temperature of 220 °C. The most active zeolite catalyst was the 10% CaO/BEA system (Si/Al = 300), which showed the highest triglyceride (TG) conversion of 90.5% and the second highest FAME yield of 94.6% in the transesterification reaction carried out at 220 °C. The high activity of this system is associated with its alkalinity, high value of the specific surface area, the size of the active phase crystallites, and its characteristic sorption properties in relation to methanol.

Periodontitis is a complex condition. Left untreated, it leads to tooth loss and the need for prosthetic treatment. The incidence of periodontitis is steadily increasing, so new methods are being sought to aid in the diagnosis of the disease. Among the methods postulated is the determination of concentrations of bioactive compounds which include extracellular matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). These enzymes are present in various structural elements of the stomatognathic system. The most promising enzyme of this group appears to be metalloproteinase 8 (MMP-8). MMP-8 assays are performed in gingival fluid or saliva, and MMP-8 levels have been shown to be higher in patients with periodontitis compared to healthy subjects and correlated with some clinical parameters of the condition and the severity of the disease. In addition, the preliminary usefulness of this enzyme in evaluating the effectiveness of periodontal treatment and doxycycline therapy has been demonstrated. Determination of the active form of MMP-8 (aMMP-8) in oral rinse fluid using off-the-shelf assays shows the highest potential. Despite reports about aMMP-8 and promising data on the role of MMP-8 in periodontal diagnosis, a clear determination of the usefulness of this enzyme requires further research.

Educating the general population about dental trauma is of public health interest. The aim of this scoping review was to map research on traumatic dental injuries (TDIs) education in the general population and to identify the most relevant methods of knowledge transfer. PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science All Databases, reference lists, and grey literature were searched. Articles in English published between 2000 and 2020 were included. A total of 32 articles fulfilled inclusion criteria. The most frequently tested modality was lecture/seminar/workshop. Studies focused mainly on teachers and medical staff as target groups. Post-intervention evaluation showed an increase in knowledge. In long-term follow-up, a decrease in knowledge was found. The effectiveness of different modalities varied. Studies comparing single-modal and multimodal approaches did not confirm the effect of combined methods. Printed materials are a practical mode for laypeople. Lectures should be reserved for professions with high probability of coming into contact with a TDI victim. The Internet can be a promising tool to educate people. Educators have to choose the method of communication most appropriate for the target population. The education should include topics related to dental trauma prevention. Further research is needed to investigate the effectiveness of multimodal TDI education.

OBJECTIVES: Composition of saliva reflects the condition of the oral cavity. THE AIM OF THE STUDY: Investigation of the concentrations of MMP-1 (Matrix metalloproteinase-1), MMP-2 (Matrix metalloproteinase-2) and fibronectin in the saliva of patients planned for endodontic treatment or surgical extraction. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Seventy-five patients with caries and 14 healthy subjects were included in the study. Subjects were divided into group 1, in which 50 patients were planned for endodontic treatment, and group 2, in which 25 patients were planned for surgical extraction. For the measurements, we used a surface plasmon resonance imaging biosensor. RESULTS: We found higher levels of MMP-1, MMP-2 and fibronectin in the saliva of patients planned for dental treatment than in healthy donors. We found lower concentrations of MMP-2 in subjects planned for surgical extraction, than in patients planned for endodontic treatment; however, there were no such differences in salivary concentrations of MMP-1 and fibronectin. There were no statistically significant differences in MMP-1 concentrations in the saliva before and after any type of dental treatment, but contrary to that, we found a statistically significant decrease in MMP-2 concentrations after endodontic treatment and after surgical extraction. We found a significant rise in the concentrations of fibronectin after surgical extraction but not after endodontic treatment. CONCLUSIONS: The concentrations of MMP-1 and MMP-2 in the saliva of our patients with caries were increased in comparison to healthy individuals, but after the treatment-so sanation of the oral cavity-we noted a decrease in matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) levels. MMPs can be found in gingival crevicular fluid and saliva, carious dentin and plaque. According to our observations, the main source of MMPs in patients with caries is probably carious dentin. Increase in the salivary levels of fibronectin (FN) after surgical extraction may be connected with soft tissue injury caused by surgical extraction. Our results are another example of the fact that higher salivary concentrations of MMP-1, MMP-2 and FN can reflect the health status of the oral cavity in patients with caries.
