OBJECTIVES: To evaluate in vitro the effects of nano-sized sodium trimetaphosphate (TMPnano) and sodium fluoride (F) added to a 17.5 % hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) bleaching gel on the color change, enamel mechanical and morphological properties, and H2O2 transamelodentinal diffusion. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Bovine enamel/dentin discs (n = 180) were divided according to the bleaching gel: 17.5 % H2O2 (17.5 % HP); 17.5 % H2O2 + 0.1 % F (HP/F); 17.5 % H2O2 + 1 % TMPnano (HP/TMPnano); 17.5 % H2O2 + 0.1 % F + 1 % TMPnano (HP/F/TMPnano) and 35 % H2O2 (35 % HP). The gels were applied for 40 min on three sessions, each session spaced 7 days apart. The total color change (ΔE*ab) according to the Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) L*a*b* color change measured by CIEDE2000 (ΔE00), whitening index (ΔWID), surface hardness (SH), surface roughness (Ra), cross-sectional hardness (ΔKHN), and transamelodentinal diffusion were assessed. Enamel surfaces were examined using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDS) analysis. The data were analyzed using ANOVA, followed by the Student-Newman-Keuls test (p < 0.05). RESULTS: ΔE*ab, ΔE00, and ΔWID values were comparable among the gels that produced a bleaching effect post-treatment (p < 0.001). The HP/F/TMPnano group exhibited lower mineral loss (SH and ΔKHN), Ra, and H2O2 diffusion compared to the 17.5 % HP and 35 % HP groups, which had the highest values (p < 0.001). SEM/EDS analysis revealed surface changes in all bleached groups, though these changes were less pronounced with F/TMPnano. CONCLUSIONS: The 17.5 % HP gel containing F/TMPnano maintains the bleaching effect while reducing enamel demineralization, roughness, H2O2 diffusion, and enamel morphological changes. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Low-Concentration H2O2 bleaching gel containing F/TMPnano can be used as a novel approach to enhance safety and maintain the performance of aesthetic effects.

Background: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate if rapid maxillary expansion improves the activity of the masticatory muscles (masseter and temporal) in patients with unilateral posterior crossbite. Material and Methods: Searches were performed in PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane Library, and grey literature. A manual search of orthodontic journals was also performed. Randomized clinical trials or longitudinal prospective studies were eligibles. Meta-analyses were conducted using R software with the "Meta" package, applying mean differences with a 95% confidence interval. Risk of bias was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa scale, and evidence certainty was evaluated using GRADE. Results: Nine articles were included. Qualitative analysis showed that RME treatment in patients with unilateral posterior crossbite showed a positive correlation with improvement in masseter and temporalis muscle activity. Meta-analyses indicated a significant difference for all models of muscle activity after treatment with rapid maxillary expansion, except for the temporal muscle in the force exerted on the maximum voluntary clenching on cotton rolls. The studies showed low bias risk, and the evidence certainty for each analysis was generally low to very low. Conclusions: This investigation demonstrated the benefits of R rapid maxillary expansion in treating unilateral posterior crossbite and its potential therapeutic effects on the masticatory muscles. This study assessed the features of the 100 most-cited papers on diabetes mellitus (DM) in dentistry using bibliometric measures. A search of the most cited papers on DM using journals included in the category "Dentistry, Oral Surgery and Medicine" in the Web of Science database up to January 2023 was performed. The complete bibliographic records of the selected papers were exported in plain text or Research Information Systems (RIS) file format. The following bibliometric indicators were collected: title, year, authors, number of citations, mean number of citations, institution, country, continent, study design, journal, impact factor, and keywords. Graphical bibliometric networks were created using the VOSviewer software. The number of citations for the 100 most-cited papers in DM research ranged from 111 to 566. Six papers each had more than 400 citations. Most were observational studies (n = 50) from the United States (USA) (n = 23) and were published in the Journal of Periodontology (30%; n=30). Robert Genco was the most cited author and contributed the most to the top 100 articles (3,653 citations; n = 13). The VOSviewer map of co-authorship showed the existence of clusters in research collaboration. The most prolific institutions were the Universities of Buffalo and Michigan (n = 6 each). "Diabetes mellitus" was the most frequent keyword, with 31 occurrences. In conclusion, the most cited studies that investigated the relationship between dentistry and DM were in periodontology. Observational studies, primarily from the USA, have been the most cited thus far.

BACKGROUND: Bibliometric analysis is a critical indicator of the influence and relevance of scientific papers, whilst also highlighting key contributors and gaps in knowledge in a scientific field. OBJECTIVES: To update and analyse the 100 most-cited papers in regenerative endodontics from 2019 to 2023. METHODS: A search of the most-cited recent papers focusing on regenerative endodontics using journals included in the category, 'Dentistry, Oral Surgery & Medicine', in the Clarivate Web of Science database from 2019 to 2023 was performed. Three researchers conducted the study selection and data extraction. Data extraction included publication title and year, authors, number and mean number of citations, institution, country and continent, study design, journal title, keywords and research topic. Citation counts were also collected in Google Scholar and Scopus databases. Graphical bibliometric networks were created using VOSviewer software. RESULTS: The number of citations of the 100 most-cited articles ranged from 6 to 85. Most were published in 2020 (n = 48), principally in the Journal of Endodontics (47%), followed by International Endodontic Journal (13%), Journal of Dental Research (6%) and Dental Materials (6%). Laboratory study was the most common study design amongst the included papers (n = 47), followed by narrative reviews (n = 17) and observational studies (n = 16). The most frequent first author on the top three most-cited papers was Hacer Aksel, whilst Adham A. Azim (n = 6; 89 citations) contributed most to the top 100 articles. The institution from which most articles originated was the University of Hong Kong (China) (n = 5; 81 citations), whereas the corresponding authors were predominantly from the United States of America (USA) (n = 31; 560 citations). The VOSviewer map of co-authorship demonstrated research collaborative clusters. 'Regenerative endodontics' and 'stem-cells' were the most employed keywords (37 and 36 occurrences respectively). DISCUSSION: The current study was designed not only to showcase the most influential papers in regenerative endodontics since 2019 but also to provide a better understanding of global research in this area over the last five years. CONCLUSIONS: This bibliometric analysis highlighted papers, authors, institutions and keywords in regenerative endodontics. The 100 most-cited papers primarily consisted of laboratory studies published in the USA, focusing on evaluating biomaterials and scaffold design strategies in contact with stem cells. Clinical studies and systematic reviews representing higher levels of scientific evidence are currently not the most influential in the regenerative endodontic field.

The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis (SRM) was to evaluate the effectiveness of the adjunctive use of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) in non-surgical periodontal treatment (NSPT) in subjects with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and periodontitis. This SRM was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42023410180) and followed the guidelines of PRISMA 2020. Searches were performed in different electronic databases. Risk of bias was performed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool (RoB 2.0) for randomized clinical trials (RCT). Meta-analysis was performed using Rev Man software. The mean difference (MD) measure of effect was calculated, the random effect model was applied with a 95% confidence interval, and heterogeneity was tested by the I2 index. The certainty of the evidence was rated using GRADE. A total of 1118 records were screened, and four studies were included. There was a greater reduction in the microbial load of periodontopathogens after NSPT with aPDT. Meta-analysis showed that probing depth (post 3 and 6 months) and clinical attachment loss (post 6 months) were lower for the aPDT-treated group than the NSPT alone: MD -0.39 [-0.74; -0.05], p = 0.02; MD -0.70 [-0.99; -0.41], p < 0.0001; MD -0.84 [-1,34; -0.34], p = 0.0001, respectively. Overall, the studies had a low risk of bias and, the certainty of evidence was rated as moderate. It is suggested that aPDT is a promising adjuvant therapy, showing efficacy in the reduction of the microbial load and in some clinical parameters of individuals with periodontitis and HIV.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this work was to evaluate the antibiofilm and anticaries properties of the association of arginine (Arg) with calcium glycerophosphate (CaGP) and fluoride (F). METHODS: An active attachment, polymicrobial biofilm model obtained from saliva and bovine teeth discs were used. After the initial biofilm growth period, the enamel discs were transferred to culture medium. The treatment solutions were added to the culture media to achieve the desired final concentration. The following groups were used: negative control (Control); F (110 ppm F); CaGP (0.05 %); Arg (0.8 %) and their associations (F + CaGP; Arg + F; Arg + CaGP; Arg +F + CaGP). The following analyses were carried out: bacterial viability (total bacteria, aciduric bacteria and mutans streptococci), pH assessment of the spent culture medium, dry weight quantification, evaluation of surface hardness loss (%SH) and subsurface mineral content. Normality and homoscedasticity were tested (Shapiro-Wilk and Levene's test) and the following tests were applied: two-way ANOVA (acidogenicity), Kruskall-Wallis (microbial viability) and one way ANOVA (dry weight, %SH, mineral content). RESULTS: The association Arg + F + CaGP resulted in the lowest surface hardness loss in tooth enamel (-10.9 ± 2.3 %; p < 0.05). Arg +F + CaGP exhibited highest values of subsurface mineral content (10.1 ± 2.9 gHAP/cm3) in comparison to Control and F (p < 0.05). In comparison to Control and F, Arg +F + CaGP promoted the highest reduction in aciduric bacteria and mutans streptococci (5.7 ± 0.4; 4.4 ± 0.5 logCFU/mL, p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The Arg-F-Ca association demonstrated to be the most effective combination in protecting the loss of surface hardness and subsurface mineral content, in addition to controlling important virulence factors of the cariogenic biofilm. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Our findings provide evidence that the Arg-F-Ca association showed an additive effect, particularly concerning protection against enamel demineralization. The combination of these compounds may be a strategy for patients at high risk of caries.

INTRODUCTION: The decline in dental caries has been attributed to the widespread use of fluoride (F). Two forms of presentation are fluoridated toothpaste (FT) and mouthwash (MW), widely used by the population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study aimed to evaluate in vitro the effects of combining FT and MW, whether supplemented with sodium trimetaphosphate (TMP) or not, on dental enamel demineralization. Bovine enamel blocks (n = 60) were selected based on initial surface hardness (SHi) and divided into 5 experimental groups (n = 12 each): I) Placebo Toothpaste (without F/TMP); II) 1100 ppm F Toothpaste (FT); III) 1100F associated with a MW at 100 ppm F (FT + MW 100F); IV) 1100F associated with a MW at 225 ppm F (FT + MW 250F); and V) 1100F associated with a MW at 100 ppm F supplemented with 0.4 % TMP (FT + MW 100F-TMP). The blocks were treated twice a day, undergoing 5 pH cycles over 7 days. Thus, the percentage change in surface hardness (%SH), integrated subsurface hardness loss (ΔKHN), and the concentration of F, phosphorus (P), and calcium (Ca) in the enamel were determined. The data were submitted to ANOVA and Student-Newman-Keuls test (p < 0.001). RESULTS: The 1100F group was statistically inferior to the groups associated with MW for %SH, ΔKHN, and the concentration of P and Ca in the enamel (p < 0.001). Blocks treated with FT + MW 225F and FT + MW 100F-TMP showed significantly lower %SH compared to the other groups (p < 0.001). The FT + MW 100F - TMP group exhibited the lowest depth mineral loss (ΔKHN), and higher concentration de P in enamel (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The adjunct use of MW with FT produces a greater protective effect in inhibiting enamel demineralization, and the supplementation of TMP to the MW with 100F provides a superior effect compared to MW with 225F. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: This combination of treatments could be regarded as one of several alternative fluoride supplements for subjects at elevated risk of caries.

OBJECTIVES: This systematic review and meta-analysis (SRM) aimed to evaluate the efficacy of laser phototherapy (LPT) on the reduction in postoperative pain (PP) of endodontic origin after conventional/non-surgical reintervention of root canals. METHODS: This SRM was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42021243500) and followed the guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis. Meta-analysis was conducted using R software with the "META" package, the mean difference (MD) measure of effect was calculated, and the fixed effect model was applied with a 95% confidence interval (CI). The Cochrane collaboration scale was used to assess the risk of bias and the GRADE tool to assess the quality of evidence. RESULTS: Initially, 1028 articles were found, and five articles were included. Most studies were classified as "low" risk of bias. Of the five clinical studies, four showed a significant decrease in PP after endodontic reintervention in the LPT groups compared to the control group, especially in the first four days after the intervention. In symptomatic teeth with multiple roots, LPT led to less PP at 24 h (MD -0.52 [-1.03; -0.02] p = .04). However, no significant difference between the groups was found at 48 and 72 h (p > .05). The certainty of the evidence was classified as low. CONCLUSION: Despite the limitations of this SRM, LPT was shown to be a promising alternative for reducing and controlling PP in conventional endodontic reintervention. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The use of LPT in endodontic reintervention may be a safe and promising alternative to clinically efficacious agent for use in the management of PP in this procedure.

To evaluate the effect of 1100 ppm F toothpastes supplemented with micrometric or nanosized ß-CaGP (ß-CaGPm/ß-CaGPn) on artificial enamel remineralization, using a pH cycling model. Enamel blocks with artificial caries were randomly allocated into ten groups (n = 10), according to the toothpastes: without fluoride/ß-CaGPm/ß-CaGPn (negative control); 1100 ppm F (1100F); 1100F plus 0.125%, 0.25%, 0.5%, and 1.0% of ß-CaGPm or ß-CaGPn. The blocks were treated 2×/day with slurries of toothpastes. After pH cycling, the percentage of surface hardness recovery (%SHR); integrated loss of subsurface hardness (ΔKHN); integrated mineral loss (ΔIMR); fluoride (F), calcium (Ca), and phosphorus (P) concentrations in the enamel; polydispersity index (PdI); and zeta potential (Zp) were determined. The data were analyzed by ANOVA (p < 0.001). For Zp/PdI, no significance was observed when comparing the means (p > 0.001). The treatment with 1100F-0.25%ß-CaGPn led to %SHR â¼57 higher when compared to the 1100F group (p < 0.001). The lowest ΔKHN was observed for the 1100F-0.25%ß-CaGPn group (p < 0.001). The ΔIMR was lower (â¼201%) for the 1100F-0.25%ß-CaGPn when compared to 1100F (p < 0.001). The association of ß-CaGPm and ß-CaGPn to 1100F did not influence its F concentration (p > 0.001). The highest increase in Ca and P was observed for 1100F-0.25%ß-CaGPn (p < 0.001). The addition of 0.25%ß-CaGPn to 1100F toothpaste was able to promote an additional remineralizing effect of artificial caries lesions.

The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis (SRM) was to evaluate whether bioceramic sealers have better penetration capacity in dentinal tubules and antimicrobial activity when compared to AH Plus® sealer. This SRM was recorded in the Open Science Framework database and followed the guidelines of the PRISMA 2020. Five databases were searched by two independent reviewers. Only in vitro studies that evaluated the effects of bioceramic sealers on dentinal tubule penetration and antimicrobial activity outcomes compared to AH Plus® sealer were included. Meta-analysis was conducted using R software, using the effect measure of the standardized mean difference (SMD) and inverse variance method. A modified Joanna Briggs Institute's Checklist was used for the risk of bias assessment. A total of 1486 studies were identified, and only 54 studies that fulfilled our eligibility criteria were included in this review. There was no statistical difference between the sealers evaluated for dentinal tubule penetration, in the thirds evaluated: coronal SMD 0.58 [0.14; 1.31], p = 0.12; middle SMD 0.07 [0.54; 0.39], p = 0.75; and apical SMD 0.08 [0.73; 0.56], p = 0.80. Both sealers demonstrated similar antimicrobial action (SMD [3.42; 5.32], p = 0.67 and SMD 0.67 [1.89; 0.55], p = 0.28). The studies presented a low risk of bias. Based on the in vitro studies included and according to the limitations of the present review, the data suggest that bioceramic and AH Plus® sealers present similar penetration capacity in dentinal tubules and antimicrobial effect, making them suitable materials to be considered in clinical practice.

The primary objective of this in vitro study was to investigate the erosive potential of enamel under the use of clear aligners (CA), by simulating in vivo conditions experienced by patients who do not remove their CA during the consumption of acidic beverages. In addition, the difference in erosion protection conferred by artificial and human saliva was also evaluated. Sound-extracted human premolars (n = 20) had half of their surfaces protected with acid-resistant nail polish and were randomly distributed into two experimental groups (n = 10): teeth immersed in human saliva or artificial saliva. All teeth had half of their lingual surfaces enclosed by a CA device. The erosive challenges consisted of individual immersion of each sample in citrus acid three times a day, intermediated by immersion in human saliva or artificial saliva for 2 h, during ten days of the erosive protocol. The enamel mineral content was analyzed by high-resolution microtomography. The differential mineral concentration profiles were obtained by subtracting the profile of the mineral concentration of the exposed area and enamel under the CA area from the respective sound area (control). In addition, enamel wear and enamel volume loss were measured. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was also performed to analyze the enamel surface. Data were analyzed by two-way ANOVA, followed by the Student-Newman-Keuls test. The enamel wear was higher in teeth immersed in artificial saliva, when compared to human saliva (p < 0.001). The volume loss of the exposed enamel area was lower for tooth immersed in human saliva than in artificial saliva (p < 0.001), during the acid challenge protocol. The use of CA during acid challenges promoted wear and mineral loss of dental enamel, being these changes more pronounced on the enamel surface under the CA. These results open a new path for the development of further studies adopting clinical protocols that promote more accurate responses in the clinical practice during orthodontic treatment.

This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the efficacy of dexlansoprazole (a proton pump inhibitor-PPI) in resolving heartburn, reflux, and other symptoms and complications resulting from gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). The study followed PRISMA 2020 and was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42020206513). The search strategy used MeSH and free terms appropriately adapted for each database. Only randomized clinical trials (RCTs) were included. The Cochrane tool (RoB 2.0) was used to assess the risk of bias, and the certainty of evidence was rated using GRADE. Ten RCTs were included. Dexlansoprazole outperformed the placebo and other PPIs in the resolution of heartburn and reflux symptoms in patients with GERD, with benefits during and after treatment, especially in those with moderate and severe symptoms. The meta-analyses indicated that dexlansoprazole at doses of 30 and 60 mg had more 24 h heartburn-free days and nights compared to the placebo medications; no difference was reported between dexlansoprazole at doses of 30 and 60 mg in heartburn-free nights. A low bias risk and a moderate certainty of evidence were observed. This review confirms the therapeutic effect of dexlansoprazole (placebo-controlled) and its improvements in GERD symptoms compared to another PPI. However, the interpretation of the results should be carried out cautiously due to the small number of included studies and other reported limitations.

Graphical bibliometric networks were created using the VOSviewer software. The number of citations for the 100 most-cited papers in DM research ranged from 111 to 566. Six papers each had more than 400 citations. Most were observational studies (n = 50) from the United States (USA) (n = 23) and were published in the Journal of Periodontology (30%; n=30). Robert Genco was the most cited author and contributed the most to the top 100 articles (3,653 citations; n = 13). The VOSviewer map of co-authorship showed the existence of clusters in research collaboration. The most prolific institutions were the Universities of Buffalo and Michigan (n = 6 each). "Diabetes mellitus" was the most frequent keyword, with 31 occurrences. In conclusion, the most cited studies that investigated the relationship between dentistry and DM were in periodontology. Observational studies, primarily from the USA, have been the most cited thus far.
RESUMEN
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate in vitro the effects of sodium fluoride (F) and nano-sized sodium trimetaphosphate (TMPnano) added to a 35% hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) bleaching gel on the color alteration, enamel mechanical and morphological properties, and H2O2 transamelodentinal diffusion. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Bovine enamel/dentin discs (n = 180) were divided according to the bleaching gel: 35% H2O2 (HP); 35% H2O2 + 0.1% F (HP/F); 35% H2O2 + 1% TMPnano (HP/TMPnano); 35% H2O2 + 0.1% F + 1% TMPnano (HP/F/TMPnano) and 35% H2O2 + 2% calcium gluconate (HP/Ca). The gels were applied 3 times by 40 min; once each 7-day. The Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) L*a*b* total color alteration (ΔE), color alteration by CIEDE2000 (ΔE00), whitening index (ΔWID), surface (SH) and cross-sectional hardness (ΔKHN), surface roughness (Ra), and transamelodentinal diffusion were determined. Enamel surfaces were evaluated by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and X-ray Dispersive Energy (EDX). Data were submitted to ANOVA, followed by the Student-Newman-Keuls test (p <0.05). RESULTS: ΔE, ΔE00, and ΔWID were similar among the gels that promoted a bleaching effect after treatment (p <0.001). Mineral loss (SH and ΔKHN), Ra, and H2O2 diffusion were lower for HP/F/TMPnano; the HP and HP/Ca groups presented the highest values (p <0.001). For SEM/EDX, surface changes were observed in all bleached groups, but less intense with TMPnano. CONCLUSIONS: Gels containing F/TMPnano do not interfere with the bleaching effect and reduce enamel demineralization, roughness, H2O2 diffusion, and morphological changes. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Whitening gels containing F/TMPnano can be used as a new strategy to increase safety and maintain clinical performance.

The mastoid process has attracted the attention of several researchers due to its protected position at the base of the skull and the fact that it is relatively compact, in addition to being highly resistant and dimorphic, considered as a gold standard anatomical structure in the determination of the sexual dimorphism of skulls. However, intrinsic and extrinsic factors may influence this anatomical structure over time, providing contradictory and ambiguous data. Therefore, other anatomical structures need to be evaluated concurrently with the mastoid process to provide better accuracy and reliability of skull sexual dimorphism data. Thus, the objective of this systematic review was to evaluate the degree of reliability of the mastoid process to determine sexual dimorphism compared to other dimorphic structures, since there are still no systematic reviews on the subject in the literature. This review follows the guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) and was recorded in the Prospective International Systematic Reviews Registry (PROSPERO) (CRD 42023395167 Systematic Registry) (CRD420223). The inclusion criteria for selecting the studies were based on the PICO question: "Are skull anatomical structures reliable as alternatives to determine sexual dimorphism compared to the mastoid process?". A literature search for studies was performed in the MEDLINE Scopus, Web of Science, LILACS, and Cochrane Library databases. The Kappa agreement presented an approval level of (k = 0.93). This systematic review analyzed 13 ex-vivo studies published between 2008 and 2023. The risk of bias was considered low in 12 of the studies, and high in 1 study. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that even with the limitations of this systematic review, quantitative and qualitative analyses are essential in sexual identification of human skulls, and different anatomical structures can be used as references in addition to the mastoid process, with high reliability and precision, among them the; glabella, frontal profile, superciliary arch, bizygomatic width, maximum cranial length, and nasal height.
RESUMEN
The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis (SRM) was to assess postoperative pain (PP) after endodontic treatment with bioceramic root canal sealer compared to AH Plus® sealer. This SRM was carried out in accordance with the items on the PRISMA 2020 checklist and Cochrane guidelines and registered in PROSPERO (CRD42021259283). Only randomized clinical trials (RCTs) were included. Meta-analysis was conducted using R software, the standardized means difference (SMD) measure of effect was calculated for quantitative variables, and the odds ratio (OR) for binary variables. The Cochrane tool (RoB 2.0) was used to assess the risk of bias, and the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) approach was used to assess the quality of evidence. Qualitative and quantitative analysis included 18 and 17 studies, respectively. For quantitative variables, the bioceramic root canal sealer presented less occurrence of postoperative pain than the AH Plus® sealer in 24 h (SMD - 0.17 [- 0.34; - 0.01], p = 0.0340). For binary variables, there was no difference observed between the sealers evaluated, except for sealer extrusion where the bioceramic group had lower post-filling material extrusion (OR 0.52 [0.32; 0.84], p = 0.007). Regarding the risk of bias analysis, low risk was observed for most domains, except allocation that was considered unclear, while the certainty of evidence ranged from moderate to low. The results showed that bioceramics sealers reduced postoperative endodontic pain only after 24 h and showed less sealer extrusion compared to the AH Plus® sealer. However, more robust and standardized clinical trials are needed to confirm the results with less heterogeneity and higher quality of evidence.

One of the most important parameters in the identification process in forensic Medicine and Dentistry is the determination of sex through the skull, based on morphological and metric dimorphism. Photogrammetry is an affordable option that allows the reconstruction of position, orientation, shape, and size, allowing the performance of quantitative and qualitative analyzes to identify the sex of the individual. However, there are few systematic reviews in the literature validating whether photogrammetry is a reliable methodology for sexual identification using human skulls. Therefore, the objective of the current systematic review was to validate whether photogrammetry of dry skulls is reliable as a method for calculating sex in human identification. This revision follows the guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) and was recorded in the Prospective International Systematic Reviews Registry (PROSPERO) (CRD420223 Systematic Registry) (CRD420223). The inclusion criteria for selecting the studies were based on the PICO question: "Is test photogrammetry reliable as a method for estimating sex in human identification?". A literature search for studies was performed in the databases MEDLINE Scopus, Web of Science, LILACS, and the Cochrane Library. The Kappa agreement presented an approval level of (k = 0.93). This systematic review analyzed 11 ex-vivo studies published between 2001 and 2021. The risk of bias was considered low in 8 of the studies, and high in 3 studies. Based on this systematic review, it can be concluded that the photogrammetry method is viable and reliable in identifying sexual dimorphism.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this systematic review and meta-analysis (SRM) was to answer the question as to whether the use of ultrasonic irrigation (UI) results in better antimicrobial activity in root canal disinfection compared to conventional irrigation (CI). METHODS: A literature search was performed in the main scientific databases, carried out until October 2021. The eligibility criteria were randomized clinical trials (RCTs). Two meta-analyses were conducted using R software with the "META" package. The mean difference (MD) and odds ratio (OR) measure of effect were calculated. The fixed effect model was applied with a 95% confidence interval. The Cochrane collaboration scale was used to assess risk of bias and the GRADE tool to assess the quality of evidence. RESULTS: A total of 1782 records were screened, and 12 studies meeting the criteria were included in this review. A low risk of bias was observed for most domains, except allocation concealment that was considered unclear. The certainty of evidence was classified as moderate in the OR meta-analyses and low in the MD meta-analyses. Ultrasonic irrigation resulted in a better antimicrobial effect in both meta-analyses, MD 1.42 [1.60; 1.23] p < 0.0001, I2 = 80%; and OR 3.86 [1.98; 7.53] p< 0.0001, I2 = 28.7%. CONCLUSION: Within the limitations of this SRM, UI presented better antimicrobial efficacy than CI. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: UI should be used by clinicians as it promotes better antimicrobial efficacy in patients undergoing endodontic treatment.

OBJECTIVE: The study evaluated the effect of solutions containing fluoride (F) and/or sodium trimetaphosphate (TMP) and F/TMP on the inhibition of MMP-2 and MMP-9, and on dentin remineralization in vitro. DESIGN: Bovine root dentin blocks were prepared, and caries-like lesions were induced in two thirds of the surface. Blocks were then randomly divided into 13 groups/solutions (n = 10): Placebo; 0.3 %, 1 % and 3 % NaOH-hydrolyzed TMP; 0.3 %, 1 % and 3 % TMP; 250, 500 and 1100 ppm F; 250 ppm F + 0.3 % TMP; 500 ppm F + 1 % TMP and 1100 ppm F + 3 % TMP. One third of each specimen was treated with the respective solutions in pH-cycling. The mineral concentration (gHAp × cm-3 × µm) was determined by computed X-ray microtomography, and data submitted to ANOVA and Student-Newman-Keuls' test (p < 0.05). The ability of the solutions to inhibit MMP-2 and MMP-9 activity was assessed by zymography. RESULTS: F/TMP association led to less mineral loss in the deeper region of the lesion and reduced the depth of lesions when compared to its counterpart without TMP (p < 0.001). 3 % TMP (hydrolyzed or not), 500 ppm F and 1100 ppm F completely inhibited MMP-2 activity, while for MMP-9 such effects were only achieved by treatment with 1100 ppm F + 3 % TMP. CONCLUSION: Treatment with 1100 ppm F + 3 % TMP fully inhibits the gelatinolytic activity of MMPs-2 and - 9 and shows greater remineralizing capacity in artificial caries lesions in dentin. However, hydrolyzing TMP does not improve its anti-proteolytic activity and its remineralizing capacity.

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the effectiveness of the use of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) in root canals disinfection in cases of endodontic retreatments. METHODS: This Systematic Review was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42021260013) and followed the guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA). Searches were performed in the electronic databases PubMeb, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, Web of Science, Clinical Trials and Cochrane Library. Methodological quality and risk of bias were assessed by the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool for randomized clinical trials (RCT) and by the Newcastle-Ottawa (NOS) qualifier for non-RCT (prospective) studies. Meta-analysis was performed using R software, version 3.6.3 with the "META" package assistant by the RStudio platform. The odds ratio (OR) measure of effect was calculated and the random effect model was applied with a 95% confidence interval, and heterogeneity tested by the I2 index. The certainty of evidence was rated using GRADE. RESULTS: Regarding the 1513 studies screened, 10 met the eligibility criteria and were included, and 8 used in the quantitative synthesis. Meta-analysis showed that all of studies data presented a significant difference before and after of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy in the microbial load reduction in secondary endondontic infections (OR 0.15 [0.07; 0.32], p < 0.0001). Overall, the studies had a low risk of bias and, the analysis of evidence by GRADE assessment was rated as moderate. CONCLUSION: It is suggested that aPDT is a beneficial and promising tool, showing efficacy in reducing the microbial load in cases of endodontic retreatment.
