RESUMEN

In this study, risk of exposure to adult patients in some common radiological procedures was estimated at selected diagnostic centers in Lagos State, Nigeria using estimated average effective doses. The results showed that pelvis lateral (LAT) examination with the lowest estimated mean effective dose level (2.61) recorded the highest probability of cancer incidence and mortality occurrences, while lumbar anteroposterior (AP) had the lowest (3.61). A high sum total of probability of fatal cancers and the total weighted probability of non-fatal cancer in a single exposure to low-dose ionizing radiation were recorded in pelvic procedure among others. Also, a high-percentage mortality increase of solid cancers was recorded in chest PA examination (53.7%), while the lowest was in lumbar spine radiography (with lumbar AP = 0.14%, lumbar LAT = 0.15%). The data obtained suggested the possibility of having higher percentage mortality and cancer-related incidence in the chest.

RESUMEN

Some nutritional parameters were investigated in 62 healthy Nigerian female subjects of low socio-economic status. The percentage body fat (% BF) and some biochemical parameters, High and Low Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol (HDL-C and LDL-C), Total Plasma Cholesterol (TC), Triglyceride (TG), Uric Acid (UA), Urinary Creatinine (U-Cr), Creatinine in plasma (P-Cr) and Creatinine clearance (Cr-CI), were evaluated. Also determined were the Body Mass Index (BMI), Packed Cell Volume, Systolic and Diastolic Blood Pressure (BP-I, BP-2), various skin-fold measurements and body circumferences. Reference values were then established for these various parameters and the correlation between the various variables determined. When the subjects were stratified into four groups (underweight, normal, overweight, and obese) based on their BMI, significant differences (ANOVA, p < 0.05) were observed in LDL-C, Cr-CI, BP-I, as well as 10 out of the 13 anthropometric parameters. These differences could possibly provide diagnostic/prognostic insight for the four groups and the many important diseases associated with them. The hip circumference, in particular, has such a high correlation with both BMI and % BF that it is being suggested as a substitute for these two important parameters in Nigerian women of low socio-economic background.

RESUMEN

The thermoluminescence (TL) and other properties of calcium halophosphate fluorescent coating powder were studied in detail with the sole aim of ascertaining its suitability for use as a dosimetric material. The shape of the glow curve (peaks at about 125 degrees C and 350 degrees C) as well as its fairly linear dose response even at very high doses are indicative of its suitability. Optical properties of the material were studied using Infrared spectroscopy (IR) and UV-Visible spectrophotometry. The IR spectrum shows a prominent peak at 3425.9 cm(-1) indicating the presence of OH and N-H bonds. The material absorbs sharply at wavelength between 196 nm and 220 nm. The material exhibits high transmittance at various peaks with corresponding wavelengths from 300 to 831 nm. This material can also find application in radiation therapy associated with very high accident dosimetry as well as in material testing.
