RESUMEN

In this original research, we present the results in terms of effectiveness and safety of bimekizumab for hidradenitis suppurativa in real clinical practice. Results indicated significant improvement in all activity scores and patient-reported outcomes at week 16, including a notable decrease in mean IHS4 from 27.1 to 15.6 (p < 0.001), HS-PGA from 5.1 to 3.2 (p < 0.001), VAS pain from 8.3 to 4.7 (p < 0.001) and DLQI from 21.6 to 12.6 (p < 0.001). Bimekizumab, administered every 2 or 4 weeks, was well-tolerated with no discontinuations and no new safety concerns identified. These findings corroborate the drug's effectiveness and favourable safety profile observed in phase 3 clinical trials, supporting its use in real-world clinical practice for treating HS.

Gaze direction and pupil dilation play a critical role in communication and social interaction due to their ability to redirect and capture our attention and their relevance for emotional information. The present study aimed to explore whether the pupil size and gaze direction of the speaker affect language comprehension. Participants listened to sentences that could be correct or contain a syntactic anomaly, while the static face of a speaker was manipulated in terms of gaze direction (direct, averted) and pupil size (mydriasis, miosis). Left anterior negativity (LAN) and P600 linguistic event-related potential components were observed in response to syntactic anomalies across all conditions. The speaker's gaze did not impact syntactic comprehension. However, the amplitude of the LAN component for mydriasis (dilated pupil) was larger than for miosis (constricted pupil) condition. Larger pupils are generally associated with care, trust, interest, and attention, which might facilitate syntactic processing at early automatic stages. The result also supports the permeable and context-dependent nature of syntax. Previous studies also support an automatic nature of syntax (fast and efficient), which combined with the permeability to relevant sources of communicative information, such as pupil size and emotions, is highly adaptive for language comprehension and social interaction.

Hospital sewage is an ecosystem that facilitates the transfer of antibiotic and heavy metal resistance genes and the interaction of human and environmental bacteria. In this environment, we have detected the presence of 7 KPC-2 and BEL-1 co-producing E. coli isolates of two different clones over a 10-month period in the same hospital. All isolates carried blaKPC-2 and the operon mer on the same IncP plasmid of similar size and an IncN plasmid of different size each clone carrying blaBEL-1. Both IncN-blaBEL-1 plasmids shared a 77 kb region containing blaBEL-1 alongside with fosE, bla OXA-10 and aac(6')-1b genes in a class 3 integron within a Tn3 transposon. The major IncN plasmid contained in addition a region homolog to P1-like bacteriophage RCS47, including the lytic RepL and lysogenic proteins, but other phage regions were incomplete. The characters such as the temporal persistence in sewage, the absence of colonized patients in the hospital or in the region, the presence of a p1 phage-plasmid fusion and the infrequent class 3 integron as genetic platform would indicate that BEL-1-producing isolates could have been generated in situ by adaptation to human sewage. Part of the microbiota in these discharges could be explained by the interactions of sewage ecosystems and not derive directly from the hospital.

Four mononuclear CoII complexes of formula [Co(L)(SCN)2(CH3OH)0.5(H2O)0.5]·1.5H2O·0.75CH3OH (1), [Co(L1)Cl2]·H2O·2CH3CN (2), [Co(L1)(SCN)2]·1.5H2O·CH3OH (3) and [Co(L1)]ClO4·2CH3OH (4) were prepared from the N6-tripodal Schiff base ligands (S)P[N(Me)NC(H)2-Q]3 (L) and (S)P[N(Me)NC(H)1-ISOQ]3 (L1), where Q and ISOQ represent quinolyl and isoquinolyl moieties, respectively. In 1, the L ligand does not coordinate to the CoII ion in a tripodal manner but using a new N,N,S tridentate mode, which is due to the fact that the N6-tripodal coordination promotes a strong steric hindrance between the quinolyl moieties. However, L1 can coordinate to the CoII ions either in a tripodal manner using CoII salts with poorly coordinating anions to give 4 or in a bisbidentate fashion using CoII salt-containing medium to strongly coordinating anions to afford 2 and 3. In the case of L1, there is no steric hindrance between ISOQ moieties after coordination to the CoII ion. The CoII ion exhibits a distorted octahedral geometry for compounds 1-3, with the anions in cis positions for the former and in trans positions for the two latter compounds. Compound 4 shows an intermediate geometry between an octahedral and trigonal prism but closer to the latter one. DC magnetic properties, HFEPR and FIRMS measurements and ab initio calculations demonstrate that distorted octahedral complexes 1-3 exhibit easy-plane magnetic anisotropy (D > 0), whereas compound 4 shows large easy-axis magnetic anisotropy (D < 0). Comparative analysis of the magneto-structural data underlines the important role that is played not only by the coordination geometry but also the electronic effects in determining the anisotropy of the CoII ions. Compounds 2-3 show a field-induced slow relaxation of magnetization. Despite its large easy-axis magnetic anisotropy, compound 4 does not show significant slow relaxation (SMR) above 2 K under zero applied magnetic fields, but its magnetic dilution with ZnII triggers SMR at zero field. Finally, it is worth remarking that compounds 2-4 show smaller relaxation times than the analogous complexes with the tripodal ligand bearing in its arms pyridine instead of isoquinoline moieties, which is most likely due to the increase of the molecular size in the former one.

Background: The study aimed to compare the amount of extrusion, the time taken to achieve apical patency and duration for removing filling material during the retreatment of teeth filled with NeoMTA 2® (Avalon Biomed, Houston, TX, USA), a calcium silicate hydraulic cement and AHPlus™ (Denstsply, Konstanz, Germany), a resin-based cement, using continuous rotation and asymmetric reciprocating rotation instruments. Material and Methods: 60 monoradicular human teeth were selected and instrumented with Race #35.06 (FKG Dentaire, La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland). The teeth were randomly assigned to two groups based on the cement used for filling (n = 30 each) AHPlus™ and NeoMTA 2®. Both groups were obturated with gutta-percha, using the lateral condensation technique. During non-surgical retreatments, each group was further divided into two subgroups: D-Race (FKG) and Reciproc (VDW, Munich, Germany) (n = 15 each). The total time to achieve apical patency and complete the retreatment were recorded. Extruded debris were collected and weighted. Student t-tests were employed for mean comparisons to assess significant differences between variables. Results: No statistically significant differences were found in terms of type of cement and apical extrusion. Regarding the rotation system, using the Reciproc system resulted in longer time to achieve patency and retreatment times compared to D-Race system, with statistically significant differences (P< 0.05). Conclusions: All systems used in retreatment led to apical extrusion. Apical patency was achieved in all cases. Key words:D-Race, Reciproc, calcium silicate-based cement, root canal retreatment.

PURPOSE: This study aims to describe a novel approach to medial epicanthoplasty in patients with blepharophimosis-ptosis-epicanthus inversus syndrome (BPES) and evaluate the surgical outcome of this technique. METHODS: A retrospective, noncomparative, interventional case series involving 22 BPES patients who underwent medial epicanthoplasty using the Lambda-Double-Fixation technique (LDFT) performed by a single surgeon. Pre- and postoperative measurements of inner intercanthal distance (DIC) and horizontal palpebral fissure (HPFL) were recorded. Concurrent or staged ptosis surgery and lateral cantholysis, along with any complications, were documented. RESULTS: The mean age of the patients was 2.9 ± 2.2 years. Preoperatively, the mean DIC measured 34.0 ± 2.7 mm, significantly reducing to 23.7 ± 2.1 mm postoperatively (p < 0.001). A notable increase in mean HPFL was observed in both eyes postoperatively: right eye form 18.4 ± 2.4 mm to 23.7 ± 1.8 mm (p < 0.001) and left eye from 18.3 ± 2.4 mm to 23.8 ± 1.9 mm (p < 0.001). Postoperative scars were barely visible in all patients. CONCLUSION: LDFT is a simple and reproducible technique for medial epicanthoplasty in BPES. Our results affirm that LDFT induces a physiologically concave reshaping of the medial canthal region, optimizing access to the peritarsal zone and ensuring a secure fixation of the new canthus. These benefits lead to a reduction in ICD and an increase in HPFL, leading to a cosmetically appealing postoperative outcome.

Antioxidant activity can be evaluated using cyclic voltammetry (CV). The aim of this work is to verify the efficacy of CV in evaluating the synergistic effect of bioactive compounds, such as phenolic and amino acid compounds, on antioxidant activity. Therefore, three types of model solutions were prepared: individual model solution (phenol and amino acid), (b) binary model solutions (phenol-phenol and amino acid-amino acid) and (c) mixed phenol-amino acid solutions. Electrochemical measurement conditions were optimized for phenolic compounds (pH 3.0, 1.0 g/L and 100 mV/s) and for amino acids (pH 7.0, 2.0 g/L for amino acids and 100 mV/s), and, for each solution, the functional groups responsible of the anodic and cathodic peaks were established. The peak anodic potential (Epa) and the onset potential (Eon) were two parameters of great importance. The first one was used to classify the solutions according to their antioxidant potential. In general, all the binary and mixed solutions had lower values of Epa than the corresponding individual model solution, which indicates an improvement in the antioxidant potential. The second one was used to evaluate the synergistic effects of phenolic compounds and amino acids.

OBJECTIVES: To estimate the incidence of pneumonia diagnosis in elderly patients in Spanish emergency departments (ED), need for hospitalization, adverse events and predictive capacity of biomarkers commonly used in the ED. METHODS: Patients ≥65 years with pneumonia seen in 52 Spanish EDs were included. We recorded in-hospitaland 30-day mortality as adverse events, as well as intensive care unit (ICU) admission among hospitalizedpatients. Association of 10 predefined variables with adverse events was calculated and expressed as odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval (CI), as well as predictive capacity of 5 commonly used biomarkers in the ED (leukocytes, hemoglobin, C-reactive protein, glucose, creatinine) was investigated using area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC-ROC). RESULTS: 591 patients with pneumonia attended in the ED were included (annual incidence of 18,4 per 1000 inhabitants). A total of 78.0% were hospitalized. Overall, 30-day mortality was 14.2% and in-hospital mortality was 12.9%. Functional dependency was associated with both events (OR=4.453, 95%CI=2.361-8.400; and OR=3.497, 95%CI=1.578-7.750, respectively) as well as severe comorbidity (2.344, 1.363-4.030, and 2.463, 1.252-4.846, respectively). Admission to the ICU during hospitalization occurred in 3.5%, with no associated factors. The predictive capacity of biomarkers was only moderate for creatinine for ICU admission (AUC-ROC=0.702, 95% CI=0.536-0.869) and for leukocytes for post-discharge adverse event (0.669, 0.540-0.798). CONCLUSIONS: Pneumonia is a frequent diagnosis in elderly patients consulting in the ED. Their functional dependence and comorbidity is the factor most associated with adverse events. The biomarkers analyzed do not have a good predictive capacity for adverse events.

Quinoa is a facultative halophyte with excellent tolerance to salinity. In this study, the epidermal bladder cell complex (EBCc) of quinoa leaves was studied to determine their cellular characteristics and involvement in salt tolerance. We used light microscopy, confocal RAMAN microscopy, confocal fluorescence microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and environmental scanning electron microscopy complemented by energy dispersive X-ray analysis. Ionic content was quantified with flame atomic absorption spectroscopy and with flame emission photometry. Results show that: (i) the number of EBCcs remains constant but their density and area vary with leaf age; (ii) stalk cells store lipids and exhibit thick walls, bladder cells present carotenes in small vesicles, oxalate crystals in vacuoles and lignin in their walls and both stalk and bladder cells have cuticles that differ in wax and cutin content; (iii) chloroplasts containing starch can be found on both stalk and bladder cells, and the latter also presents grana; (iv) plasmodesmata are observed between the stalk cell and the bladder cell, and between the epidermal cell and the stalk cell, and ectodesmata-like structures are observed on the bladder cell. Under high salinity conditions, (v) there is a clear tendency to accumulate greater amounts of K+ with respect to Na+ in the bladder cell; (vi) stalk cells accumulate similar amounts of K+ and Na+; (vii) Na+ accumulates mainly in the medullary parenchyma of the stem. These results add knowledge about the structure, content, and role of EBCc under salt stress, and surprisingly present the parenchyma of the stem as the main area of Na+ accumulation.

The COVID-19 pandemic impacted personal and professional life. For academics, research, teaching, and service tasks were upended and we all had to navigate the altered landscape. However, some individuals faced a disproportionate burden, particularly academics with minoritized identities or those who were early career, were caregivers, or had intersecting identities. As comparative endocrinologists, we determine how aspects of individual and species-level variation influence response to, recovery from, and resilience in the face of stressors. Here, we flip that framework and apply an integrative biological lens to the impact of the COVID-19 chronic stressor on our endocrine community. We address how the pandemic altered impact factors of academia (e.g., scholarly products) and relatedly, how factors of impact (e.g., sex, gender, race, career stage, caregiver status, etc.) altered the way in which individuals could respond. We predict the pandemic will have long-term impacts on the population dynamics, composition, and landscape of our academic ecosystem. Impact factors of research, namely journal submissions, were altered by COVID-19, and women authors saw a big dip. We discuss this broadly and then report General and Comparative Endocrinology (GCE) manuscript submission and acceptance status by gender and geographic region from 2019 to 2023. We also summarize how the pandemic impacted individuals with different axes of identity, how academic institutions have responded, compile proposed solutions, and conclude with a discussion on what we can all do to (re)build the academy in an equitable way. At GCE, the first author positions had gender parity, but men outnumbered women at the corresponding author position. Region of manuscript origin mattered for submission and acceptance rates, and women authors from Asia and the Middle East were the most heavily impacted by the pandemic. The number of manuscripts submitted dropped after year 1 of the pandemic and has not yet recovered. Thus, COVID-19 was a chronic stressor for the GCE community.

When we perform an action, self-elicited movement induces suppression of somatosensory information to the cortex, requiring a correct motor-sensory and inter-sensory (i.e. cutaneous senses, kinesthesia, and proprioception) integration processes to be successful. However, recent works show that blindness might impact some of these elements. The current study investigates the effect of movement on tactile perception and the role of vision in this process. We measured the velocity discrimination threshold in 18 sighted and 18 blind individuals by having them perceive a sequence of two movements and discriminate the faster one in passive and active touch conditions. Participants' Just Noticeable Difference (JND) was measured to quantify their precision. Results showed a generally worse performance during the active touch condition compared to the passive. In particular, this difference was significant in the blind group, regardless of the blindness duration, but not in the sighted one. These findings suggest that the absence of visual calibration impacts motor-sensory and inter-sensory integration required during movement, diminishing the reliability of tactile signals in blind individuals. Our work spotlights the need for intervention in this population and should be considered in the sensory substitution/reinforcement device design.

La hiperhidrosis primaria es una patología frecuente que representa un motivo de consulta dermatológica común, se caracterizada por una sudoración excesiva en regiones axilares, plantares, palmares o craneofaciales que aparece generalmente en la pubertad o en la adolescencia, sus portadores con frecuencia desarrollan discapacidad psicológica como síntomas de depresión, ansiedad y auto aislamiento social. Objetivo. Identificar el impacto la hiperhidrosis primaria produce en la calidad de vida de los pacientes, mediante el análisis de la efectividad de tratamientos disponibles para la mejora de síntomas generados antes su padecimiento. Metodología. En la revisión sistemática se recopiló información científica en Pubmed, Scopus y Taylor & Francis, la información obtenida fue de artículos originales y metaanálisis comprendido entre enero de 2011 a diciembre de 2022, la ecuación de búsqueda "hiperhidrosis", "psicología", "salud mental" y "calidad de vida. Resultados. Se obtuvo 127 fuentes entre PubMed, Scopus, Taylor & Francis, se revisó y eliminó los duplicados y los artículos carentes de información de interés, seleccionando 41 artículos, y posteriormente se aplicó a los artículos restantes los criterios de inclusión y exclusión, obteniéndose finalmente 8 artículos para el análisis. Conclusión. El principal impacto psicológico de la hiperhidrosis primaria es la ansiedad y la depresión, las cuales se pueden evidenciar con mayor prevalencia en pacientes de sexo femenino y la repercusión principal en la vida diaria es el aislamiento social, donde el apoyo de sus familiares juega un papel importante en las recuperaciones del paciente, además se desconoce la causa directa de la enfermedad, siendo su causa multifactorial.


Primary hyperhidrosis is a common pathology that represents a common reason for dermatologic consultation, characterized by excessive sweating in axillary, plantar, palmar or craniofacial regions that usually appears at puberty or adolescence, its carriers often develop psychological disability such as symptoms of depression, anxiety and social self-isolation. Objective. To identify the impact of primary hyperhidrosis on the quality of life of patients, by analyzing the effectiveness of available treatments for the improvement of symptoms generated before the condition. Methodology. In the systematic review, scientific information was collected in Pubmed, Scopus and Taylor & Francis, the information obtained was from original articles and meta-analysis from January 2011 to December 2022, the search equation "hyperhidrosis", "psychology", "mental health" and "quality of life". Results. We obtained 127 sources among PubMed, Scopus, Taylor & Francis, reviewed and eliminated duplicates and articles lacking information of interest, selecting 41 articles, and then applied the inclusion and exclusion criteria to the remaining articles, finally obtaining 8 articles for analysis. Conclusion. The main psychological impact of primary hyperhidrosis is anxiety and depression, which are more prevalent in female patients, and the main repercussion in daily life is social isolation, where the support of family members plays an important role in the patient's recovery, and the direct cause of the disease is unknown, being its cause multifactorial.

Objetivo. Identificar o impacto da hiperidrose primária na qualidade de vida dos pacientes, analisando a eficácia dos tratamentos disponíveis para a melhora dos sintomas gerados antes da doença. Metodologia. Na revisão sistemática, foram coletadas informações científicas no Pubmed, Scopus e Taylor & Francis, as informações obtidas foram de artigos originais e meta-análises entre janeiro de 2011 e dezembro de 2022, a equação de busca "hyperhidrosis", "psychology", "mental health" e "quality of life". Resultados. Obtivemos 127 fontes do PubMed, Scopus, Taylor & Francis, revisamos e eliminamos duplicatas e artigos sem informações de interesse, selecionando 41 artigos e, em seguida, aplicamos os critérios de inclusão e exclusão aos artigos restantes, obtendo finalmente 8 artigos para análise. Conclusão. O principal impacto psicológico da hiperidrose primária é a ansiedade e a depressão, que são mais prevalentes em pacientes do sexo feminino, e a principal repercussão na vida diária é o isolamento social, em que o apoio dos familiares desempenha um papel importante na recuperação do paciente. Além disso, a causa direta da doença é desconhecida, pois é multifatorial.

The synthesis, structure and magnetic properties of homometallic hexanuclear lanthanide complexes [Ln6(HL)4(tfa)4(S)2]·2NO3·x H2O·yMeOH (1, Ln = Gd, S = MeOH, x = 0, y = 0; 2, Ln = Tb, S = H2O, x = 2, y = 2; 3, Ln = Dy, S = MeOH, x = 0, y = 2; 4, Ln = Er, S = MeOH, x = 0, y = 2). [(H4L) = 6-((bis(2-hydroxyethyl)amino)-N'-(2-hydroxybenzylidene)picolinohydrazide) (tfa = trifloroacetylacetone)] are reported. These hexanuclear assemblies are made up of two trinuclear triangular sub-units linked through the oxygen atoms of two phenoxide bridging groups in a corner sharing arrangement. Magnetic studies reveal that 1 displays a magnetocaloric effect with a maximum value of -ΔSm = 21.03 J kg-1 K-1 at T = 3 K and under an applied field change ΔB = 5 T. Complex 3 shows slow relaxation of magnetization even under zero applied field although a clear maximum in the ac susceptibility plots cannot be seen. However, under an optimal applied field of 0.2 T, clear maxima are observed in the out-of-phase (χ''M) component of the ac susceptibility in the temperature range 3.5 K (2 kHz) to 10.5 K (10 kHz). The temperature dependence of the relaxation times could be fitted to the sum of Orbach, Raman and QTM relaxation processes affording the following parameters: τo = 3.4(9) × 10-8 s, Ueff = 94(2) K, BRaman = 16.43(1) K-n s-1, n = 3.2(3) and τQTM = 0.0044(3) s. 4, under an applied magnetic field of 0.2 T, shows slow relaxation of magnetization through a thermally activated Orbach process with Ueff = 18.2(9) K and τo = 3.5(3) × 10-8 s.

BACKGROUND: Excessive body weight has been related to lower cognitive performance. One of the mechanisms through which excess body weight may affect cognition is inflammation. HYPOTHESIS: Our hypothesis is that both body mass index (BMI) and circulating levels of inflammatory biomarkers will be negatively related to cognitive performance. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SETTING: Users of the public health centres of the Consorci Sanitari de Terrassa (Terrassa, Spain) between 2010 and 2017 aged 12-21 years. PARTICIPANTS: One hundred and five adolescents (46 normoweight, 18 overweight, 41 obese). MEASUREMENTS: Levels of high sensitivity C-reactive protein, interleukin 6, tumour necrosis factor α (TNFα) and fibrinogen were determined from blood samples. Cognitive performance was evaluated and six cognitive composites were obtained: working memory, cognitive flexibility, inhibitory control, decision-making, verbal memory, and fine motor speed. A single multivariate general lineal model was used to assess the influence of the four inflammatory biomarkers, as well as participants' BMI, sex, and age on the 6 cognitive indexes. RESULTS: An inverse relationship between BMI and inhibitory control (F = 5.688, p = .019; ß = -0.212, p = .031), verbal memory (F = 5.404, p = .022; ß = -0.255, p = .009) and fine motor speed (F = 9.038, p = .003; ß = -0.319, p = .001) was observed. Levels of TNFα and fibrinogen were inversely related to inhibitory control (F = 5.055, p = .027; ß = -0.226, p = .021) and verbal memory (F = 4.732, p = .032; ß = -0.274, p = .005), respectively. LIMITATIONS: The cross-sectional nature of the study, the use of cognitive tests designed for clinical purposes, and the use of BMI as a proxy for adiposity are limitations of our study that must be taken into account when interpreting results. CONCLUSIONS: Our data indicate that some components of executive functions, together with verbal memory, are sensitive to specific obesity-related inflammatory agents at early ages.

INTRODUCTION: Human intestinal spirochetosis (HIE) is a poorly studied clinical entity with variable clinical manifestations. However, in recent years it has gained special relevance because an increasing number of cases have been described in people living with HIV (PWH) and in patients with a history of sexually transmitted infections (STI) or immunosuppression. METHODS: Retrospective review of all HIE cases identified in a tertiary level hospital (Hospital Universitario la Paz, Madrid) between 2014 and 2021. RESULTS: 36 Cases of HIE were identified. Most cases corresponded to males (94%) with a median age of 45 years. 10 patients (29.4%) were PWH and 20 (56%) were men who had sex with men. Although the clinical manifestations were very heterogeneous, the most frequent was chronic diarrhea (47%), and up to 25% of the subjects had clinical proctitis. 39% percent of patients had been diagnosed with an STI in the previous two years, this characteristic being more frequent in PWH (90% vs. 28%; p < 0.01) than in patients without HIV infection. The STI most frequently associated with a diagnosis of HIE was syphilis (31%). CONCLUSION: HIE is frequently diagnosed with other STIs and affects mostly men who have sex with men, which supports that this entity could be considered as a new STI.

Chenopodium quinoa Willd. is a crop species domesticated over 5000 years ago. This species is highly diverse, with a geographical distribution that covers more than 5000 km from Colombia to Chile, going through a variety of edaphoclimatic conditions. Quinoa grains have great nutritional quality, raising interest at a worldwide level. In this work, by using shotgun proteomics and in silico analysis, we present an overview of mature quinoa seed proteins from a physiological context and considering the process of seed maturation and future seed germination. For this purpose, we selected grains from four contrasting quinoa cultivars (Amarilla de Maranganí, Chadmo, Sajama and Nariño) with different edaphoclimatic and geographical origins. The results give insight on the most important metabolic pathways for mature quinoa seeds including: starch synthesis, protein bodies and lipid bodies composition, reserves and their mobilization, redox homeostasis, and stress related proteins like heat-shock proteins (HSPs) and late embryogenesis abundant proteins (LEAs), as well as evidence for capped and uncapped mRNA translation. LEAs present in our analysis show a specific pattern of expression matching that of other species. Overall, this work presents a complete snapshot of quinoa seeds physiological context, providing a reference point for further studies. Background: The aim of this study was to compare the cytotoxicity of calcium silicate-based endodontic sealer, Bio-C® Sealer, with other calcium silicate-based sealers: BioRoot™ RCS, one silicon-based sealer combined with calcium silicate particles: GuttaFlow® Bioseal, one resin MTA-based root canal sealer: MTA Fillapex®, and an epoxy resin-based sealer: AH Plus®. Material and Methods: NIH 3T3 fibroblasts were cultured and sealers extracts were obtained. Cytotoxicity was evaluated by the MTS assay and the optical densities of the solutions were measured with a microplate reader. This study was designed with one sample for each control group and n=10 for each treatment group of the different sealants. The results were classified according to the degree of cell viability and underwent statistical analysis with the ANOVA test (p<0.05). The samples were examined under an inverted microscope to evaluate the effect of each sealer on fibroblast cell morphology. Results: Cells incubated with GuttaFlow® Bioseal extract showed the highest cell viability without statistically significant differences with the control group. BioRoot™ RCS and Bio-C® Sealer showed moderate (tending to slight) cytotoxicity and both AH Plus® and MTA Fillapex® showed severe cytotoxicity in comparison with the control group (p<0.05). AH Plus® and MTA Fillapex® were not significantly different from one another; nor was BioRoot™ RCS from Bio-C® Sealer. Microscope examination found that fibroblasts in contact with GuttaFlow® Bioseal and Bio-C® Sealer presented the most similar aspects to the control group both in terms of number and shape. Conclusions: Bio-C® Sealer showed moderate (tending to slight) cytotoxicity compared with the control group, GuttaFlow® Bioseal showed no cytotoxicity, BioRoot™ RCS moderate-slight cytotoxicity and AH Plus® and MTA Fillapex® severe cytotoxicity. PURPOSE: This work aims to describe patients hospitalized in internal medicine wards in terms of nutrition and sarcopenia. It also seeks to evaluate short- and long-term mortality related to malnutrition and sarcopenia. METHODS: This cross-sectional study collected data on consecutive patients admitted to a single center's internal medicine ward. Patients were recruited in May and October 2021. Malnutrition was determined by the Mini-Nutritional Assessment-Short Form (MNA-SF) and sarcopenia by the Strength, Assistance in walking, Rise from a chair, Climb stairs, and Falls questionnaire (SARC-F scale) and handgrip strength test. Patients who were hospitalized for >48 hours were excluded. RESULTS: The sample included 619 patients with a mean ± SD age of 76.0 ± 14.8 years of which 50.6% were women. Patients were classified into three groups based on malnutrition: group 1 (MNA-SF 12-14 points) (no risk) included 158 patients, group 2 (MNA-SF 8-12 points) (high risk) included 233 patients, and group 3 (MNA-SF 0-7 points) (malnourished) included 228 patients. Malnourished patients had more dysphagia, significantly lower protein and albumin levels, and significantly higher inflammatory marker levels and pressure ulcers. In-hospital mortality was significantly higher in groups 2 and 3 (p < .00001). The worst outcome (mortality and readmissions or mortality) was more common among malnourished patients (p = .0001). Inflammation, comorbidity, and sarcopenia were most closely associated with negative outcomes. CONCLUSION: Malnutrition upon admission is associated with worse short- and long-term outcomes in internal medicine inpatients. Sarcopenia, multimorbidity, and inflammation-measured by albumin, C-reactive protein, or their ratios-are key risk factors. Early identification of malnutrition and sarcopenia through active screening is important in caring for internal medicine patients.

The replacement of pyridine by 1-methyl-imidazol in the arms of a N6-tripodal ligand allows preparing two new CoII complexes with quasi-ideal triangular prismatic geometry, which behave as SIMs (Single Ion Magnets) at zero dc field with enhanced axial magnetic anisotropy, magnetic relaxation times and magnetic hysteresis.
