RESUMEN

ABSTRACT: A 33-year-old woman was referred for radioiodine 6 months after total thyroidectomy and neck dissection for papillary thyroid cancer. Posttherapy whole-body 131 I scintigraphy showed not only the known activity in the neck but also accumulated activity in both feet. SPECT/CT revealed focal uptake in bilateral great toenails. On further clinical evaluation and follow-up, the patient was diagnosed as paronychia of the great toenails.

Full-thickness skin wounds are have continued to be reconstructive challenges in dermal and skin appendage regeneration, and skin substitutes are promising tools for addressing these reconstructive procedures. Herein, the one-step fabrication of a cell sheet integrated with a biomimetic hydrogel as a tissue engineered skin for skin wound healing generated in one step is introduced. Briefly, cell sheets with rich extracellular matrix, high cell density, and good cell connections were integrated with biomimetic hydrogel to fabricate gel + human skin fibroblasts (HSFs) sheets and gel + human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) sheets in one step for assembly as a cell sheet-laden hydrogel (CSH). The designed biomimetic hydrogel formed with UV crosslinking and ionic crosslinking exhibited unique properties due to the photo-generated aldehyde groups, which were suitable for integrating into the cell sheet, and ionic crosslinking reduced the adhesive force toward the substrate. These properties allowed the gel + cell sheet film to be easily released from the substrate. The cells in the harvested cell sheet maintained excellent viability, proliferation, and definite migration abilities inside the hydrogel. Moreover, the CSH was implanted into a full-thickness skin defects to construct a required dermal matrix and cell microenvironment. The wound closure rate reached 60.00 ± 6.26% on the 2nd day, accelerating mature granulation and dermis formation with skin appendages after 14 days. This project can provide distinct guidance and strategies for the complete repair and regeneration of full-thickness skin defects, and provides a material with great potential for tissue regeneration in clinical applications.

Objective: To study subclinical thyroid dysfunction (SCTD)-subclinical hyperthyroidism and subclinical hypothyroidism-in Chinese patients in relation to body mass index (BMI) and to determine whether a difference between sexes exists. Methods: This cross-sectional study recruited 13,503 healthy participants (8,345 male, 5,158 female) who participated in a health examination. Clinical data, including anthropometric measurements and serum parameters, were collected. The association between SCTD and the BMI of each sex was analyzed separately by stratifying the data by SCTD type and regarding BMI as a categorical or as a continuous variable in different models. The odds ratio of SCTD was calculated from binary logistic regression models. Results: The prevalence of both subclinical hyperthyroidism and subclinical hypothyroidism was significantly lower in males compared to females. For subclinical hypothyroidism, we found no significant association with BMI in females. In males, there was a significant negative relationship between BMI and subclinical hypothyroidism. For subclinical hyperthyroidism, we did not find any significant relationship with BMI in either sex after stratifying the data and treating BMI as a categorical or as a continuous variable. Conclusion: For subclinical hyperthyroidism, no significant effect was found in either sex. For subclinical hypothyroidism, high BMI was associated with lower rates of subclinical hypothyroidism in males, and no significant correlation was found in females. The mechanism of this sex-specific association between BMI and SCTD needs more verification. Mean platelet volume (MPV) is a determinant of activation and variability of platelets (PLT). The focus of this study was to to investigate MPV values in patients with and without metabolic syndrome (MS). It also evaluates the association between them. There are close connections among MPV, MS, and cardiometabolic risk. We compiled age, body mass index, blood cell counts, MPV, and other data of 59976 self-reported healthy volunteers (28428 male, 31548 female), 24.65% of who have MS. The mean age of the group was 48.21 years old. The data was grouped by sex and values of data between men and women groups were analyzed by independent sample's t-test. The relationship between sex and MS was evaluated by chi-square tests. Crude odd ratios of MS between MPV quartiles and 95% confidence intervals were analyzed by binary logistic regression in this study. We found women had higher levels of MPV (10.09 vs. 9.98, P < 0.01) and PLT (228.68 vs. 212.11, P < 0.01) than men. In females, the prevalence of MS was higher in low MPV group than in high MPV groups. The odds of having MS were significantly lower in higher MPV quartiles compared with MPV Quartile 1 in women (Adjusted OR < 1, P < 0.01). This study indicated that MS was inversely associated with MPV in females only.

OBJECTIVE: The association between subclinical thyroid dysfunction and waist circumference (WC) is still controversial, especially from the perspective of sex differences. We aimed to explore the impact of sex on this relationship in a large Chinese cohort. METHODS: This cross-sectional study recruited 13,505 healthy participants (8,346 males, 5,159 females) who were enrolled in a health check program. Clinical data were collected. The association between subclinical thyroid dysfunction and WC of both sexes was analyzed separately after dividing WC into quartiles. Odds ratios (ORs) were calculated by binary logistic regression models, and linear regression analysis was also performed. RESULTS: The prevalence rates of subclinical hyper-and hypothyroidism were significantly lower in males. Binary logistic regression models showed that WC in females with subclinical hypothyroidism had a detrimental effect with an OR of 1.011, but the effect disappeared when we included other covariates. The other ORs indicated no significant effects. The weak negative relationship between WC and thyrotropin was also indicated by linear regression analyses with very low R2 values. CONCLUSION: The current research did not show WC as a risk factor for subclinical thyroid dysfunction in either sex. Regional and ancestral origin differences may account for the variations with other studies.
