RESUMEN

Background: Glyphosate herbicide (GH) is widely used worldwide. It has a higher fatality rate than expected. GH-poisoned cases are increasingly reported. Acute kidney injury in poisoned patients is one of several predictors of GH mortality. The aim of this study was to determine whether estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) could predict kidney injury in GH intoxication. Methods: This was a retrospective study conducted at the emergency department (ED) of a single hospital between January 2004 and December 2021. A total of 434 patients presented with GH intoxication via oral ingestion, and 424 were enrolled. Their demographic characteristics, laboratory variables, complications, and mortality were analyzed to determine clinical predictors associated with GH-induced mortality using a logistic regression analysis. The relationship between GH intoxication and eGFR was determined based on the results of dominance analysis. Additionally, the comparison of creatinine and eGFR was performed through receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. Results: A total of 424 GH-poisoned patients were enrolled. Of them, 43 (10.1%) died. In the multivariable analysis, initial GCS (OR: 0.874; 95% CI: 0.765−0.998, p = 0.047), albumin (OR: 0.874; 95% CI: 0.765−0.998, p = 0.027), pH (OR: 0.002; 95% CI: 0.000−0.037, p < 0.001), QTc interval (OR: 1.018; 95% CI: 1.007−1.029, p = 0.001), and eGFR (OR: 0.969; 95% CI: 0.95−0.989, p = 0.003) were independent factors for predicting in-hospital mortality. In the dominance analysis of the relative importance of the predictive factors, pH accounted for the largest proportion at 35.8%, followed by QTc (20.0%), GCS (17.3%), eGFR (17.0%), and albumin (9.9%). Additionally, eGFR had a larger area under the ROC curve (0.846; 95% CI, 0.809−0.879) than that of creatinine (0.811; 95% CI, 0.771−0.848, p = 0.033). Conclusion: In sum, eGFR, considered a surrogate of renal function, was a useful prognostic factor for mortality in glyphosate herbicide-poisoned patients.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) is a clinical disease that is diagnosed by the loss of ovarian function before the age of 40. Despite recent progress in molecular diagnosis, the genetic etiology of POI is not well established. The aim of this study is to reveal pathogenic genetic variants involved in POI. STUDY DESIGN AND MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: To reveal pathogenic genetic variants involved in POI, whole exome sequencing was performed in nonconsanguineous family members with POI. Constitutional variants were filtered against population databases and a missense mutation of natriuretic peptide C (NPPC) (c.131A>G, p.Q44R) was selected as a convincing candidate mutation among 14 heterozygous mutant alleles in 13 genes. RESULTS: The wild-type NPPC and mutant NPPC (NPPC131A>G) were expressed in HeLa cells, and cells expressing NPPC131A>G secreted unique peptides. The ProP 1.0 Server, a neural network prediction tool, predicted the presence of a cleavage site at the substituted arginine residue (p.Q44R) of NPPC. The molecular weight of predicted cleaved peptides processed from mutant NPPC precursor corresponded to that of the actual mutant peptide. The cGMP synthetic activity of NPR2-expressing cells was significantly decreased by interaction with the mutant NPPC peptide compared with wild-type NPPC. CONCLUSIONS: The peptide generated by a rare mutation of NPPC might influence paracrine C-type natriuretic peptide (CNP)-mediated preantral follicle development and/or sustain meiotic arrest in oocytes. We therefore suggest that a mutation of the NPPC gene is involved in the pathogenesis of POI.

RESUMEN

Semiconductor-type gas sensors, composed of metal-oxide semiconductors and porous zeolite materials, are attractive devices for bio-gas detection, particularly when used as bio-gas sensors such as electronic nose application. Previous studies have shown such detection can be obtained with a separate gas concentrator and a sensor device using zeolites and oxide semiconductors of WO3 nanoparticles. By applying the gas concentrator, porous molecular structures alter both the gas sensitivity and the selectivity, and even can be used to define the sensor characteristics. Based on such a gas sensor design, we investigated the properties of an array of three sensors made of a layer of WO3 nanoparticles coated with zeolites with different interactions between gas molecule adsorption and desorption. The array was tested with four volatile organic compounds, each measured at different concentrations. The results confirm that the features of individual zeolites combined with the hybrid gas sensor behavior, along with the differences among the sensors, are sufficient for enabling the discrimination of volatile compounds when disregarding their concentration.

RESUMEN

This paper describes an X-pinch device recently developed at Seoul National University (SNU). The SNU X-pinch device is designed and fabricated to accommodate various diagnostics as well as conduct versatile experiments. It is easy to change the capacitance of the pulse generator because the capacitor bank has a modular design without insulation oil or gas. This allows us to perform a variety of experiments with a wide capacitance range from 80 to 800 nF. The operating voltage of the SNU X-pinch device is controlled from 20 to 100 kV by adjusting the gas pressure inside a triggered spark-gap switch. Triggering of the spark-gap switch is synchronized with the operation of a pulsed laser to diagnose the X-pinch plasma at the proper time. A large vacuum chamber precisely machined from an aluminum mono-block is attached to the top of the pulse generator. It is designed to accommodate not only various X-pinch loads but also various diagnostic apparatus such as optical components. Initial experiments with the SNU X-pinch device have successfully generated x rays with wires of various materials and sizes. The device will be used not only to explore the dynamics of X-pinch plasmas but also as a test stand for diagnostics of high-energy-density plasmas.

RESUMEN

Graphene (G)-based two dimensional (2D) mesoporous materials combine the advantages of G, ultrathin 2D morphology, and mesoporous structures, greatly contributing to the improvement of power and energy densities of energy storage devices. Despite considerable research progress made in the past decade, a complete overview of G-based 2D mesoporous materials has not yet been provided. In this review, we summarize the synthesis strategies for G-based 2D mesoporous materials and their applications in supercapacitors (SCs) and lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The general aspect of synthesis procedures and underlying mechanisms are discussed in detail. The structural and compositional advantages of G-based 2D mesoporous materials as electrodes for SCs and LIBs are highlighted. We provide our perspective on the opportunities and challenges for development of G-based 2D mesoporous materials. Therefore, we believe that this review will offer fruitful guidance for fabricating G-based 2D mesoporous materials as well as the other types of 2D heterostructures for electrochemical energy storage applications.

RESUMEN

Kinetochore, a protein super-complex on the centromere of chromosomes, mediates chromosome segregation during cell division by providing attachment sites for spindle microtubules. The NDC80 complex, composed of four proteins, NDC80, NUF2, SPC24 and SPC25, is localized at the outer kinetochore and connects spindle fibers to the kinetochore. Although it is conserved across species, functional studies of this complex are rare in Arabidopsis. Here, we characterize a recessive mutant, meristem unstructured-1 (mun-1), exhibiting an abnormal phenotype with unstructured shoot apical meristem caused by ectopic expression of the WUSCHEL gene in unexpected tissues. mun-1 is a weak allele because of the insertion of T-DNA in the promoter region of the SPC24 homolog. The mutant exhibits stunted growth, embryo arrest, DNA aneuploidy, and defects in chromosome segregation with a low cell division rate. Null mutants of MUN from TALEN and CRISPR/Cas9-mediated mutagenesis showed zygotic embryonic lethality similar to nuf2-1; however, the null mutations were fully transmissible via pollen and ovules. Interactions among the components of the NDC80 complex were confirmed in a yeast two-hybrid assay and in planta co-immunoprecipitation. MUN is co-localized at the centromere with HTR12/CENH3, which is a centromere-specific histone variant, but MUN is not required to recruit HTR12/CENH3 to the kinetochore. Our results support that MUN is a functional homolog of SPC24 in Arabidopsis, which is required for proper cell division. In addition, we report the ectopic generations of stem cell niches by the malfunction of kinetochore components.

RESUMEN

Annual plants complete life cycle in a year while perennial plants maintain growth for several years. Arabis alpina, a polycarpic perennial, is a close relative of monocarpic annual Arabidopsis. Pajares is an accession of A. alpina requiring vernalization, a long-term cold for flowering. Arabidopsis shows holistic flowering whereas Pajares shows idiographic flowering, producing axillary branches under variable developmental phases from juvenile, adult vegetative to reproductive phases. To understand the molecular mechanism behind diverse phases of axillary branches, we analyzed the levels of primary miR156 expressions because miR156-SPL module is a key regulator for developmental phase transition. We found that in Pajares, miR156 levels were highly variable among the axillary branches, which causes differential sensitivity to vernalization. Thus, the axillary branches expressing high levels of miR156 remain in juvenile phase even after vernalization, whereas the axillary branches expressing low levels of miR156 produce flowers after vernalization. In contrast, every axillary branches of Arabidopsis winter annual Sy-0 expressed similar levels of miR156 and synchronously responded to vernalization, which causes holistic flowering. Therefore, we suggest that variable miR156 expression levels and the resulting differential response to vernalization among axillary branches are distinctive features determining polycarpic perenniality of A. alpina Pajares.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: We analyzed the long-term results of ascending aortic replacement and arch aortic replacement in acute DeBakey type I aortic dissections to measure the differences in the distal aortic changes with extension of the aortic replacement. METHODS: We reviewed 142 cases of acute DeBakey type I aortic dissections (1996-2015). Seventy percent of the cases were ascending aortic replacements, and 30% of the cases underwent total arch aortic replacement, which includes the aorta from the root to the beginning of the descending aorta with the 3 arch branches. Fourteen percent (20 cases) resulted in surgical mortality and 86% of cases that survived had a mean follow-up period of 6.6±4.6 years. Among these cases, 64% of the patients were followed up with computed tomography (CT) angiograms with the duration of the final CT check period of 4.9±2.9 years. RESULTS: There were 15 cases of reoperation in 13 patients. Of these 15 cases, 13 cases were in the ascending aortic replacement group and 2 cases were in the total arch aortic replacement group. Late mortality occurred in 13 cases; 10 cases were in the ascending aortic replacement group and 3 cases were in the total arch aortic replacement group. Eight patients died of a distal aortic problem in the ascending aortic replacement group, and 1 patient died of distal aortic rupture in the total arch aortic replacement group. The follow-up CT angiogram showed that 69.8% of the ascending aortic replacement group and 35.7% of the total arch aortic replacement group developed distal aortic dilatation (p=0.0022). CONCLUSION: The total arch aortic replacement procedure developed fewer distal remnant aortic problems from dilatation than the ascending aortic replacement procedure in acute type I aortic dissections.

RESUMEN

A kinetic study is reported for the Michael-type reactions of X-substituted ß-nitrostyrenes (1a-j) with a series of cyclic secondary amines in MeCN. The plots of pseudo-first-order rate constant k(obsd) vs [amine] curve upward, indicating that the reactions proceed through catalyzed and uncatalyzed routes. The dissection of k(obsd) into Kk2 and Kk3 (i.e., the rate constants for the uncatalyzed and catalyzed routes, respectively) revealed that Kk3 is much larger than Kk2, implying that the reactions proceed mainly through the catalyzed route when [amine] > 0.01 M. Strikingly, the reactivity of ß-nitrostyrene (1g) toward piperidine decreases as the reaction temperature increases. Consequently, a negative enthalpy of activation is obtained, indicating that the reaction proceeds through a relatively stable intermediate. The Brønsted-type plots for the reactions of 1g are linear with ß(nuc) = 0.51 and 0.61, and the Hammett plots for the reactions of 1a-j are also linear with ρX = 0.84 and 2.10 for the uncatalyzed and catalyzed routes, respectively. The reactions are concluded to proceed through six-membered cyclic transition states for both the catalyzed and uncatalyzed routes. The effects of the substituent X on reactivity and factors influencing ß(nuc) and ρX obtained in this study are discussed.

RESUMEN

This study evaluated the reduction effect of non-point source pollution by applying best management practices (BMPs) to a 1.21 km2 small agricultural watershed using a SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) model. Two meter QuickBird land use data were prepared for the watershed. The SWAT was calibrated and validated using daily streamflow and monthly water quality (total phosphorus (TP), total nitrogen (TN), and suspended solids (SS)) records from 1999 to 2000 and from 2001 to 2002. The average Nash and Sutcliffe model efficiency was 0.63 for the streamflow and the coefficients of determination were 0.88, 0.72, and 0.68 for SS, TN, and TP, respectively. Four BMP scenarios viz. the application of vegetation filter strip and riparian buffer system, the regulation of Universal Soil Loss Equation P factor, and the fertilizing control amount for crops were applied and analyzed.
