RESUMEN

Bradyrhizobium diazoefficiens can live inside soybean root nodules and in free-living conditions. In both states, when oxygen levels decrease, cells adjust their protein pools by gene transcription modulation. PhaR is a transcription factor involved in polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) metabolism but also plays a role in the microaerobic network of this bacterium. To deeply uncover the function of PhaR, we applied a multipronged approach, including the expression profile of a phaR mutant at the transcriptional and protein levels under microaerobic conditions, and the identification of direct targets and of proteins associated with PHA granules. Our results confirmed a pleiotropic function of PhaR, affecting several phenotypes, in addition to PHA cycle control. These include growth deficiency, regulation of carbon and nitrogen allocation, and bacterial motility. Interestingly, PhaR may also modulate the microoxic-responsive regulatory network by activating the expression of fixK2 and repressing nifA, both encoding two transcription factors relevant for microaerobic regulation. At the molecular level, two PhaR-binding motifs were predicted and direct control mediated by PhaR determined by protein-interaction assays revealed seven new direct targets for PhaR. Finally, among the proteins associated with PHA granules, we found PhaR, phasins, and other proteins, confirming a dual function of PhaR in microoxia.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to analyze social inequalities in the use and access of physiotherapy service and its clinical and socio-economic determinants in women diagnosed with breast cancer in the hospital network of Barcelona. METHODS: Data from 2235 women belonging to the mixed (prospective and retrospective) DAMA Cohort were analyzed, including demographic, socio-economic, clinical, and breast cancer treatment outcomes. To determine the influence of such variables on access to physiotherapy, different Poisson regression models with robust variance (obtaining Prevalence Ratios and confidence intervals) were estimated. RESULTS: Although when experiencing different chronic and acute symptoms, only between 20 and 35% of women visited physiotherapist. Two out of 3 women reported to have received insufficient information about medical care and rehabilitation. Age of women, job occupation, education level, having a mutual or private insurance, as well as outcomes related to breast cancer, appear to be factors influencing the access to physiotherapy. CONCLUSIONS: Social and economic inequalities exist on the access to physiotherapy by women diagnosed with breast cancer, which is generally low, and may clearly impact on their functional recovery. Promoting strategies to reduce social bias, as well as improve communication and patient information regarding physiotherapy may be of interest for a better health care in breast cancer diagnosed women.

Perinatal stress experienced by mothers of very premature newborns may influence the mother's milk and the infant's intestinal microbiota. This prospective study of mothers of very preterm infants fed with mother's own milk (MOM) was carried out in a tertiary hospital over a 2-year period. The assessment of maternal stress in 45 mothers of 52 very preterm newborns using the parental stress scale (PSS:NICU) revealed an inverse relationship between stress and MOM production in the first days of life (p = 0.012). The greatest contributor to stress was the one related to the establishment of a mother-child bond. Maternal stress was lower in mothers in whom the kangaroo method was established early (p = 0.011) and in those with a higher educational level (p = 0.032). Levels of fecal calprotectin (FC) decreased with the passage of days and were directly correlated with birthweight (p = 0.044). FC levels 7 days post-delivery were lower in newborns that received postnatal antibiotics (p = 0.027). High levels of maternal stress resulted in progressive decreases and increases in the proportions of Firmicutes and Proteobacteria species, respectively, over 15 days post-delivery, both in MOM and in fecal samples from premature newborns. These findings underscore the importance of recognizing and appropriately managing maternal stress in neonatal units, given its marked influence on both the microbiota of maternal milk and the intestinal microbiota of premature newborns.

In wineries, wastewater production and solid waste generation can pose serious environmental threats. Winery wastewater production has a seasonal behavior and needs a treatment system that can adapt to these fluctuations while reducing costs, and environmental impacts and promoting other winery activities. The implementation of constructed wetlands (CWs) has been demonstrated to be a competitive solution for winery wastewater and sludge treatment. In this article, worldwide experiences over the last 25 years of CWs for winery wastewater treatment are reviewed. The review shows that the application of hybrid CWs coupled with anaerobic digestion can reduce >90 % of the organic pollutants and solids from winery wastewater while avoiding clogging. These efficiencies and advantages can be also attained with French vertical systems. Not only CWs have a good technical performance, but they also reduce up to >90 % the environmental impacts associated with winery wastewater treatment. It is due to low energy requirements, no chemicals consumption and avoidance of off-site management and transportation practices. In terms of costs, CWs can reduce up to 60 times the costs associated with winery wastewater treatment and management. More efforts should be made in order to define the social benefits of this technology and the quality of the recovered resources (e.g. treated water, fertilizer) in order to promote the circular economy without compromising human and ecosystem health.

White adipose tissue (WAT) distribution is sex dependent. Adipocyte hyperplasia contributes to WAT distribution in mice driven by cues in the tissue microenvironment, with females displaying hyperplasia in subcutaneous and visceral WAT, while males and ovariectomized females have visceral WAT (VWAT)-specific hyperplasia. However, the mechanism underlying sex-specific hyperplasia remains elusive. Here, transcriptome analysis in female mice shows that high-fat diet (HFD) induces estrogen signaling in adipocyte precursor cells (APCs). Analysis of APCs throughout the estrous cycle demonstrates increased proliferation only when proestrus (high estrogen) coincides with the onset of HFD feeding. We further show that estrogen receptor α (ERα) is required for this proliferation and that estradiol treatment at the onset of HFD feeding is sufficient to drive it. This estrous influence on APC proliferation leads to increased obesity driven by adipocyte hyperplasia. These data indicate that estrogen drives ERα-dependent obesogenic adipocyte hyperplasia in females, exacerbating obesity and contributing to the differential fat distribution between the sexes.

BACKGROUND: Inhaled ethanol in the early stages of SARS-CoV-2 infection may reduce the viral load, decreasing progression and improving prognosis. The ALCOVID-19 trial was designed to study the efficacy and safety of inhaled ethanol in older adults at initial phases of infection. METHODS: Randomized, triple-blind, placebo-controlled phase II clinical trial. Experimental group (n = 38) inhaled 65° ethanol through an oxygen flow, while in the control group (n = 37), water for injection was used. General endpoint was to evaluate disease progression according to the modified World Health Organization (WHO) Clinical Progression Scale. Specific effectiveness endpoints were body temperature, oxygen saturation, viral load assessed by cycle threshold (Ct) on real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), analytical biomarkers and use of antibiotics or corticosteroids. Specific safety outcomes were the absence of ethanol in plasma, electrographic, analytical, or respiratory alterations. RESULTS: In the intention-to-treat population, no differences were found regarding disease progression. Mean Ct values increased over time in both groups, being numerically higher in the ethanol group, reaching a value above 33 only in the ethanol group on day 14, a value above which patients are considered non-infective. No differences were found in the other specific effectiveness endpoints. Inhaled ethanol was proven to be safe as no plasma ethanol was detected, and there were no electrocardiographic, analytical, or respiratory alterations. CONCLUSIONS: The efficacy of inhaled ethanol in terms of the progression of SARS-CoV-2 infection was not demonstrated in the present trial. However, it is positioned as a safe treatment for elderly patients with early-stage COVID-19.

Poly(amide-triazole) and poly(ester-triazole) synthesized from d-galactose as a renewable resource were applied for the synthesis of nanoparticles (NPs) by the emulsification/solvent evaporation method. The NPs were characterized as stable, spherical particles, and none of their components, including the stabilizer poly(vinyl alcohol), were cytotoxic for normal rat kidney cells. These NPs proved to be useful for the efficient encapsulation of cilostazol (CLZ), an antiplatelet and vasodilator drug currently used for the treatment of intermittent claudication, which is associated with undesired side-effects. In this context, the nanoencapsulation of CLZ was expected to improve its therapeutic administration. The carbohydrate-derived polymeric NPs were designed taking into account that the triazole rings of the polymer backbone could have attractive interactions with the tetrazole ring of CLZ. The activity of the nanoencapsulated CLZ was measured using a matrix metalloproteinase model in a lipopolysaccharide-induced inflammation system. Interestingly, the encapsulated drug exhibited enhanced anti-inflammatory activity in comparison with the free drug. The results are very promising since the stable, noncytotoxic NP systems efficiently reduced the inflammation response at low CLZ doses. In summary, the NPs were obtained through an innovative methodology that combines a carbohydrate-derived synthetic polymer, designed to interact with the drug, ease of preparation, adequate biological performance, and environmentally friendly production.

ABSTRACT Objective : To determine the levels of proinflammatory cytokines around miniscrews with and without loading, used during orthodontic treatment. Material and Methods : A descriptive longitudinal study was executed with a sample of ten miniscrews inserted in patients that attended a dental clinic. Saliva and peri-implant crevicular fluid samples were taken: at baseline (T0), 24 hours after insertion (T1), 1 week after insertion (T2), 24 hours after loading (T3). The samples obtained were processed by immunoassay and read with a flow cytometer. Results : Data analysis was performed using the SPSS program version 21.0. To verify normal distribution, Kolmogorov-Smirnov test was used, followed by ANOVA to compare and determine statistical significance. Levels of inflammatory mediators in the peri-implant crevicular fluid at T1 had the following order of average values: IL-8>IL-1β >IL-6>TNF-α>IL-10>IL-12p70. Higher values were found 24 hours post-insertion. Salivary levels found were lower but the previously mentioned order was maintained. Statistically significant intergroup differences were found for IL-1β and IL-8 in the peri-implant crevicular fluid. The Scheffe post hoc test showed that there were no statistically significant differences when making an intragroup pair comparison of each mediator level in a given evaluation time. No statistically significant differences were found in saliva inter and intra-group for all the evaluated inflammatory mediators. Conclusions : The miniscrew loading did not generate an increase of the concentrations of the cytokines greater than the effect caused by the insertion per se. The highest levels of inflammatory mediators were found 24 hours post-insertion of the miniscrew.


RESUMEN Objetivo : Determinar los niveles de citocinas inflamatorias alrededor de mini-implantes con y sin carga, durante el tratamiento ortodóntico. Material y métodos : Se realizó un estudio descriptivo longitudinal con una muestra de diez mini-implantes. La toma de muestras de saliva y líquido crevicular peri-implantario fue realizada en cuatro tiempos: basal (T0), 24 horas post-inserción (T1), 1 semana post-inserción (T2), 24 horas post-carga (T3). Fueron procesadas mediante una técnica de inmunoensayo y citometría de flujo. Resultados : El análisis de los datos se realizó con el programa SPSS versión 21.0. Para verificar la distribución normal se utilizó la prueba de Kolmogorov-Smirnov, seguida de la prueba ANOVA para comparar y determinar la significancia estadística. Los niveles de mediadores inflamatorios en el líquido crevicular peri-implantario en T1 tuvieron el siguiente orden de valores promedio: IL-8> IL-1β> IL-6> TNF-α> IL-10> IL-12p70. Los valores más altos se encontraron 24 horas post-inserción. Los niveles en saliva fueron menores pero se mantuvo el orden mencionado. Se hallaron diferencias estadísticamente significativas entre grupos para IL-1β e IL-8 en el líquido crevicular peri-implantario. Posteriormente, la prueba post hoc de Scheffe demostró la ausencia de diferencias estadísticamente significativas en la comparación de pares intragrupo de cada mediador. No se encontraron diferencias estadísticamente significativas inter e intragrupo para todos los mediadores inflamatorios evaluados en saliva. Conclusiones : La carga del mini-implante no generó un aumento en la concentración de citocinas mayor que el provocado por la inserción per se. Los niveles más altos se encontraron 24 horas después de la inserción.

Sex hormones play a pivotal role in physiology and disease. Estrogen, the female sex hormone, has been long implicated in having protective roles against obesity. However, the direct impact of estrogens in white adipose tissue (WAT) function and growth is not understood. Here, we show that the deletion of estrogen receptor alpha (ERα; Esr1) from adipocytes using Adipoq-credoes not affect adipose mass in male or female mice under normal or high-fat diet (HFD) conditions. However, loss of ERα in adipocyte precursor cells (APs) via Pdgfra-cre leads to exacerbated obesity upon HFD feeding in both male and female mice, with s.c. adipose (SWAT)-specific expansion in male mice. Further characterization of these mice revealed infertility and increased plasma levels of sex hormones, including estradiol in female mice and androgens in male mice. These findings compromise the study of estrogen signaling within the adipocyte lineage using the Pdgfra-crestrain. However, AP transplant studies demonstrate that the increased AP hyperplasia in male SWAT upon Pdgfra-cre-mediated ablation of ERα is not driven by AP-intrinsic mechanisms but is rather mediated by off-target effects. These data highlight the inherent difficulties in studying models that disrupt the intricate balance of sex hormones. Thus, better approaches are needed to study the cellular and molecular mechanisms of sex hormones in obesity and disease.

Ultrasound-guided vascular access (USG-VA) is recommended by international practice guidelines but information regarding its use in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) is lacking. Our objective was to assess neonatologist's perceptions and current implementation of USG-VA in Spain. This was a nationwide online survey. The survey was composed of 37 questions divided in 4 domains: (1) neonatologist's background, (2) NICU characteristics, (3) personal perspectives about USG-VA, and (4) clinical experience in USG-VA. One-hundred and eighty survey responses from 59 NICUs (62% of Spanish NICUs) were analyzed. Most neonatologists (81%) perceive that competence in USG-VA is indispensable or very useful in clinical practice. However, 64 (35.5%) have never used USG-VA in real patients. Among neonatologists with some experience in USG-VA most perform less than 5 procedures per year (59% in venous access and 80% in arterial access) and a 38% and 60% have never used USG for venous and arterial access, respectively, in very low birth weight infants (VLBWI). More than a half of neonatologists (55.5%) use US to check catheter tip location but a 46.6% always perform a radiography for confirmation. Spanish neonatologists report that resident/fellow training in USG-VA is absent (52.2%) or unstructured (32%) in their units. The lack of adequate training is identified by a 60% of neonatologists as the most important barrier for implementation of USG-VA and 87% would recommend that future neonatologists receive formal training. CONCLUSION: Spanish neonatologists perceive that USG-VA is important in clinical practice but currently, these techniques are largely underused. Our results indicate that specific training in USG-VA should be implemented in the NICU. WHAT IS KNOWN: • Ultrasound-guided vascular access is recommended as the preferred method for central venous access and arterial line placement in children and adults. • The degree of current implementation of ultrasound for vascular access in the NICU and the perceptions of neonatologist about its use are largely unknown. WHAT IS NEW: • Most neonatologists consider that competence in ultrasound-guided vascular access is an indispensable aid for clinical practice. • However, most neonatologists are not adequately trained in ultrasound-guided vascular access and the technique is largely underused.

Inhaled administration of ethanol in the early stages of COVID-19 would favor its location on the initial replication sites, being able to reduce the progression of the disease and improving its prognosis. Before evaluating the efficacy and safety of this novel therapeutic strategy in humans, its characterization is required. The developed 65° ethanol formulation is stable at room temperature and protected from light for 15 days, maintaining its physicochemical and microbiological properties. Two oxygen flows have been tested for its administration (2 and 3 L/min) using an automated headspace gas chromatographic analysis technique (HS-GC-MS), with that of 2 L/min being the most appropriate one, ensuring the inhalation of an ethanol daily dose of 33.6 ± 3.6 mg/min and achieving more stable concentrations during the entire treatment (45 min). Under these conditions of administration, the formulation has proven to be safe, based on histological studies of the respiratory tracts and lungs of rats. On the other hand, these results are accompanied by the first preclinical molecular imaging study with radiolabeled ethanol administered by this route. The current ethanol formulation has received approval from the Spanish Agency of Medicines and Medical Devices for a phase II clinical trial for early-stage COVID-19 patients, which is currently in the recruitment phase (ALCOVID-19; EudraCT number: 2020-001760-29).

The aim of this study was to quantify and compare greenhouse gas (GHG) (i.e. carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrous oxide (N2O) and methane (CH4)) emissions from two full-scale winery wastewater and sludge treatment systems (i.e. constructed wetlands (CWs) and activated sludge system) located in Galicia (Spain). GHG fluxes were measured using the static chamber method in combination with an on-site Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) gas analyser in the CWs system. These on-site innovative techniques proved to be very accurate and reliable. In the activated sludge treatment systems, the floating chamber method in combination with the FTIR gas analyser was used. Measurements were carried out during the vintage season, when winery wastewater has the highest flow and loads, and the rest of the year. Emission rates of CO2, N2O and CH4 in the CWs units (i.e. vertical flow, horizontal subsurface flow and sludge treatment wetlands) ranged from 1.35E+02 to 7.54E+04, 1.70E-01 to 3.09E+01 and - 3.05E+01 to 1.79E+03 mg m-2 day-1, respectively. In the case of the activated sludge units (i.e. reactor, secondary settler and sludge storage tank) emission rates of CO2, N2O and CH4 ranged from 1.56E+04 to 1.43E+05, 1.13E+01 to 4.75E+01 and 2.52E+01 to 1.01E+03 mg m-2 day-1, respectively. Seasonally, daily and instantaneous variability in emissions as well as spatial variability was found. Comparing CWs with the activated sludge system, surface emission rates were lower in the CWs system in both seasons considered. Results highlighted that CWs are suitable technologies that can help to reduce GHG emissions associated with winery wastewater treatment.

OBJECTIVE: Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) approach remains controversial. We aim to evaluate whether echocardiography-guided (EchoG) PDA closure (to reduce drug exposure) and 24-h continuous ibuprofen infusion (24 h-IB) (to reduce peak concentration), compared with EchoG PDA closure plus conventional bolus (bolus-IB), reduces severe bowel adverse event rate in preterm infants with hemodynamically significant (hs) PDA. STUDY DESIGN: The study design is a multicenter, blinded, randomized controlled trial. Infants with <28 weeks of gestation underwent routine echocardiographic assessment (18-72 h of birth); infants with 28-33 weeks were screened only in cases where PDA was clinically suspected. HsPDA was considered if ductal diameter >1.5 mm and indicators of pulmonary overflow, systemic hypoperfusion, or both were present. Pharmacodynamic effect of CYP450 genotypes was also analyzed. RESULTS: One hundred forty-six infants [median gestational age 26 (25-28) weeks; median birth weight 881 (704-1,100) g] were randomized to 24 h-IB (n = 70) or bolus-IB (n = 76) study group at 86 (58-140) h from birth. Groups were comparable regarding perinatal and neonatal clinical data, but higher prevalence of male sex in the bolus-IB group was found. Neither severe bowel adverse event rate [10% (24 h-IB) and 2.6% (bolus-IB), p = 0.1] nor ductal closure rate was different between the study groups. Postnatal age and peripheral SaO2 at treatment start and pulmonary hemorrhage were associated with severe bowel events, independent of treatment group allocation. CYP2C8 genetic polymorphisms were associated with ibuprofen efficacy (p = 0.03). CONCLUSIONS: Ibuprofen intravenous continuous infusion compared with bolus infusion in preterm infants with hsPDA shows similar rates of success and does not reduce the prevalence of severe bowel events.

RESUMEN. El objetivo del presente estudio fue analizar la modificación de la conducta de los participantes del Programa Vida Sana, dirigido por el Ministerio de Salud de Chile (MINSAL) en relación a cuatro aspectos asociados al nivel de Actividad Física. Participaron 43 mujeres (entre 15 a 59 años) que ingresaron al programa que se realiza en un Centro de Salud Familiar (CESFAM) de la comuna de Chiguayante. Para el desarrollo del estudio se aplicó el Cuestionario Internacional del Actividad Física (IPAQ) en un pre y post test. El Grupo fue divido en cuatro subgrupos por rango etarios: Adolescentes 14 a 19 años, Jóvenes 20 a 29 años, Adulto-Joven 30 a 39 años y Adultos sobre 40 años. En base a los resultados obtenidos, estos arrojan un aumento significativo de los METS en los diferentes Dominios estudiados de cada categoría. Es decir, la conducta de los participantes, comparándolo con el pre y post test, manifestó un cambio conductual positivo en ellos al finalizar el programa.


ABSTRACT. The aim of this study is to analyze behavior modification of the Healthy Life Program participants, implemented by the Ministry of Health of Chile (MINSAL) related to four aspects associated with Physical Activity. Forty-three women participated (between 15 and 59 years old) who entered the program held in Family Health Center in Chiguayante County.To develop the study, the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) was applied in a pre and post-test. The Group was divided into four subgroups by age range: Adolescents 14 to 19 years, Youth 20 to 29 years, Adult-Youth 30 to 39 years, and Adults over 40 years. Based on the results obtained, these show a significant increase in METS in the different domains studied for each category. In other words, the participants' behavior, compared with the pre and post-test, showed a positive behavioral change.

Background: Emerging evidence indicates a potential role for monocytes in COVID-19 immunopathology. We investigated two soluble markers of monocyte activation, sCD14 and sCD163, in COVID-19 patients, with the aim of characterizing their potential role in monocyte-macrophage disease immunopathology. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study of its kind. Methods: Fifty-nine SARS-Cov-2 positive hospitalized patients, classified according to ICU or non-ICU admission requirement, were prospectively recruited and analyzed by ELISA for levels of sCD14 and sCD163, along with other laboratory parameters, and compared to a healthy control group. Results: sCD14 and sCD163 levels were significantly higher among COVID-19 patients, independently of ICU admission requirement, compared to the control group. We found a significant correlation between sCD14 levels and other inflammatory markers, particularly Interleukin-6, in the non-ICU patients group. sCD163 showed a moderate positive correlation with the time lapsed from admission to sampling, independently of severity group. Treatment with corticoids showed an interference with sCD14 levels, whereas hydroxychloroquine and tocilizumab did not. Conclusions: Monocyte-macrophage activation markers are increased and correlate with other inflammatory markers in SARS-Cov-2 infection, in association to hospital admission. These data suggest a preponderant role for monocyte-macrophage activation in the development of immunopathology of COVID-19 patients.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous congenital candidiasis (CCC) is a rare condition consisting of invasive fungal infection of the epidermis and dermis that mostly affects preterm infants. Maternal vaginal candidiasis is present in half of the cases, although the occurrence of invasive candidiasis during pregnancy or peripartum period is exceptional. CASE REPORT: We present the case of a full-term infant that was born by vacuum-assisted vaginal delivery to an apparently healthy 33 year-old woman with no history of intravenous drug use or vaginal candidiasis during pregnancy. The newborn showed a diffuse maculopapular rash with respiratory distress and bilateral interstitial lung infiltrates, requiring nasal continuous positive airway pressure support. Blood cultures obtained from the mother due to intrapartum fever yielded Candida albicans. Cultures of vaginal discharge and neonate skin also yielded C. albicans with the same in vitro susceptibly pattern. No alternative source for candidemia was identified. The clinical course after starting a systemic antifungal therapy was favorable in both the mother and the neonate, with clearance of candidemia and resolution of the skin lesions. CONCLUSIONS: CCC must be considered in full-term newborns with maculopapular rash at birth or during the first days of life. The absence of alternative sources for bloodstream infection in the present case suggests a potential etiopathogenic relationship between CCC and maternal candidemia. It is reasonable to rule out postpartum candidemia when CCC is suspected.

There is a lack of consensus on quality indicators suitable for neonatal transport. The aim of this study is to make a proposal for specific quality indicators for newborn transport. A retrospective descriptive study was performed (2009 to 2015) where twenty-four indicators were selected, evaluated and classified according to the 6 dimensions of quality of the Institute of Medicine. Among the 24 evaluated quality metrics, there were 3 of them which needed a correction when evaluating neonatal transport performance, because they were significantly correlated with gestational age. They were (a) stabilisation time, (b) prevalence of newborn arterial hypotension (defined by gestational age) and (c) unnoticed hypothermia at referral hospital.Conclusion: Quality evaluation through the definition of specific metrics in newborn transport is feasible. These indicators should be defined or adjusted for newborn population to measure the actual performance of the transport service.What is Known:• Quality indicators may help in defining metrics for clinical practice, promoting benchmarking and defining areas of improvement.• Newborn characteristics call for a specialised care, and quality measure during newborn transport require specific metrics. Quality metrics for paediatric transport have been defined using Delphi method. Some of these measures need to be specific for newborn, due to their intrinsic characteristics.What is New:• Using evidence-based literature and our newborn transport experience, specific quality indicators for newborn transport are suggested.• Data analysis shows how some indicators need to be adjusted for gestational age.

Quorum sensing (QS) is a communication mechanism between bacteria that allows specific processes to be controlled, such as biofilm formation, virulence factor expression, production of secondary metabolites and stress adaptation mechanisms such as bacterial competition systems including secretion systems (SS). These SS have an important role in bacterial communication. SS are ubiquitous; they are present in both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria and in Mycobacterium sp. To date, 8 types of SS have been described (T1SS, T2SS, T3SS, T4SS, T5SS, T6SS, T7SS, and T9SS). They have global functions such as the transport of proteases, lipases, adhesins, heme-binding proteins, and amidases, and specific functions such as the synthesis of proteins in host cells, adaptation to the environment, the secretion of effectors to establish an infectious niche, transfer, absorption and release of DNA, translocation of effector proteins or DNA and autotransporter secretion. All of these functions can contribute to virulence and pathogenesis. In this review, we describe the known types of SS and discuss the ones that have been shown to be regulated by QS. Due to the large amount of information about this topic in some pathogens, we focus mainly on Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Vibrio spp.

A Life Cycle Assessment was carried out in order to assess the environmental performance of constructed wetland systems for winery wastewater treatment. In particular, six scenarios which included the most common winery wastewater treatment and management options in South-Western Europe, namely third-party management and activated sludge systems, were compared. Results showed that the constructed wetland scenarios were the most environmentally friendly alternatives, while the third-party management was the worst scenario followed by the activated sludge systems. Specifically, the potential environmental impacts of the constructed wetlands scenarios were 1.5-180 and 1-10 times lower compared to those generated by the third-party and activated sludge scenarios, respectively. Thus, under the considered circumstances, constructed wetlands showed to be an environmentally friendly technology which helps reducing environmental impacts associated with winery wastewater treatment by treating winery waste on-site with low energy and chemicals consumption.

Environments co-contaminated with heavy metals and hydrocarbons have become an important problem worldwide, especially due to the effect of metals on hydrocarbon degrading microorganisms. Pseudomonas extremaustralis, a bacterium isolated from a pristine pond in Antarctica, showed high capabilities to cope with environmental stress and a very versatile metabolism that includes alkane degradation under microaerobic conditions. In this work, we analyzed P. extremaustralis' capability to resist high copper concentrations and the effect of copper presence in diesel biodegradation. We observed that P. extremaustralis resisted up to 4 mM CuSO4 in a rich medium such as LB. This copper resistance is sustained by the presence of the cus and cop operons together with other efflux systems and porins located in a single region in P. extremaustralis genome. When copper was present, diesel degradation was negatively affected, even though copper enhanced bacterial attachment to hydrocarbons. However, when a small amount of glucose (0.05% w/v) was added, the presence of CuSO4 enhanced alkane degradation. In addition, atomic force microscopy analysis showed that the presence of glucose decreased the negative effects produced by copper and diesel on the cell envelopes.
