RESUMEN

Populations at the leading front of a range expansion must rapidly adapt to novel conditions. Increased epigenetic diversity has been hypothesized to facilitate adaptation and population persistence via non-genetic phenotypic variation, especially if there is reduced genetic diversity when populations expand (i.e., epigenetic diversity compensates for low genetic diversity). In this study, we use the spatial distribution of genetic and epigenetic diversity to test this hypothesis in populations of the white-footed mouse (Peromyscus leucopus) sampled across a purported recent range expansion gradient. We found mixed support for the epigenetic compensation hypothesis and a lack of support for expectations for expansion populations of mice at the range edge, which likely reflects a complex history of expansion in white-footed mice in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Specifically, epigenetic diversity was not increased in the population at the purported edge of the range expansion in comparison to the other expansion populations. However, input from an additional ancestral source populations may have increased genetic diversity at this range edge population, counteracting the expected genetic consequences of expansion, as well as reducing the benefit of increased epigenetic diversity at the range edge. Future work will expand the focal populations to include expansion areas with a single founding lineage to test for the robustness of a general trend that supports the hypothesized compensation of reduced genetic diversity by epigenetic variation observed in the expansion population that was founded from a single historical source.

Water magnetization and geoprocessing are increasingly utilized tools in weed management. Our objective was to study the influence of water magnetization on herbicide efficiency and to verify whether there is a relationship between control scores and the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). In the laboratory experiment, water was subjected to magnetization and evaluated with respect to four characteristics. In the field experiment, plots of Brachiaria grass were subjected to treatments in a factorial scheme (6 × 2 + 1). Six herbicidal factors (doses of glyphosate and glyphosate + 2,4-D) and the magnetization or absence of magnetization of the spray solution were evaluated and compared against the control treatment (without spraying). Weed control assessments were carried out six times. Images were obtained using an embedded multispectral camera to determine the NDVI values. Data related to water characteristics were analyzed using the t test. Weed control and NDVI data were subjected to analysis of variance and are presented in regression graphs. Dispersion analysis of NDVI data was performed according to the control scores. The magnetization process decreased the pH of the water and increased the surface tension, but it did not influence the control scores or the NDVI. As the glyphosate dose was increased, the control scores were higher and the NDVI values were lower. Magnetized water did not affect the biological efficiency of the herbicides, and there was a strong correlation between the control scores and the NDVI values.

Nosso objetivo foi estudar a influência da magnetização da água na eficiência do herbicida e verificar se existe uma relação entre os escores de controle e o índice de vegetação por diferença normalizada (NDVI). No experimento de laboratório, a água foi submetida à magnetização e avaliada em relação a quatro características. No experimento de campo, parcelas de capim-braquiária foram submetidas a tratamentos em esquema fatorial (6 × 2 + 1). Seis fatores herbicidas (doses de glyphosate e glyphosate + 2,4-D) e a magnetização ou ausência de magnetização da calda foram avaliados e comparados com o tratamento controle (sem pulverização). To analyse the cost-effectiveness, in daily clinical practice, of the strategy of treating to the target of clinical remission (CR) in patients with established rheumatoid arthritis (RA), after 2 years of treatment with biological therapy. Adult patients with established RA were treated with biological therapy and followed up for 2 years by a multidisciplinary team responsible for their clinical management. Treatment effectiveness was evaluated by the DAS28 score. The direct costs incurred during this period were quantified from the perspective of the healthcare system. We calculated the cost-effectiveness of obtaining a DAS28 < 2.6, considered as CR. The study included 144 RA patients treated with biological therapies. After 2 years of treatment, 32.6% of patients achieved CR. The mean cost of achieving CR at 2 years was 79,681 ± 38,880 euros. The strategy of treatment to the target of CR is considered the most effective, but in actual clinical practice in patients with established RA, it has a high cost.

RESUMEN

One of the most important problems in the pharmacy department of a hospital is stock management. The clinical need for drugs must be satisfied with limited work labor while minimizing the use of economic resources. The complexity of the problem resides in the random nature of the drug demand and the multiple constraints that must be taken into account in every decision. In this article, chance-constrained model predictive control is proposed to deal with this problem. The flexibility of model predictive control allows taking into account explicitly the different objectives and constraints involved in the problem while the use of chance constraints provides a trade-off between conservativeness and efficiency. The solution proposed is assessed to study its implementation in two Spanish hospitals.

Biological drugs have proven efficacy and effectiveness in treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), although none has been shown to be superior. Few studies have evaluated the cost-effectiveness of biological drugs in real-life clinical conditions. The objective of this study was to compare the cost-effectiveness of infliximab, etanercept and adalimumab in achieving clinical remission (DAS28 < 2.6) when used as initial biological therapy. Patients were diagnosed with RA who began treatment with infliximab, etanercept or adalimumab in the Reina Sofia Hospital (Cordoba, Spain) between January 1, 2007, and December 31, 2012. Effectiveness was measured as the percentage of patients who achieved clinical remission after 2 years. The cost analysis considered the use of direct health resources (perspective of the healthcare system). Cost-effectiveness was calculated by dividing the total mean cost of each treatment by the percentage of patients who achieved remission. One hundred and thirty patients were included: 55 with infliximab, 44 with adalimumab and 31 with etanercept. After 2 years, 45.2 % of patients with adalimumab achieved clinical remission, versus 29.1 % with infliximab (p = 0.133) and 22.7 % with etanercept (p = 0.040), with no differences between etanercept and infliximab (p = 0.475). The average total cost at 2 years was €29,858, €25,329 and €23,309 for adalimumab, infliximab and etanercept, respectively, while the mean cost (95 %CI) to achieve remission was €66,057 (48,038­84,076), €87,040 (78,496­95,584) and €102,683 (94,559­110,807), respectively. Adalimumab was more efficient than etanercept (p < 0.001) and infliximab (p = 0.026), with no differences between etanercept and infliximab (p = 0.086). Adalimumab was the most cost-effective treatment in achieving clinical remission in real-life clinical conditions in RA patients during the study period.
