The communication outlines the present-day potentialities of X-ray diagnosis and maxillofacial surgery in recognizing and treating congenital and acquired deformities of the visceral cranium.

X-ray changes in the skull bones of children and adolescents with the first-second branchial arches syndrome are analyzed. Roentgenograms and sonograms of various parts of the skull of 66 patients are analyzed. The syndrome involves underdevelopment of half of the mandible and the condylar process and changes in the bones of the median zone of the face, temporal bone, base of the skull, and nasal cavity. The patients were divided into 3 groups with different degrees of mandibular deformations, requiring different treatment strategies.

Analysis of x-ray parameters of the facial skull in 102 children and adolescents directed for orthodontic treatment because of occlusion abnormalities showed that the changes in the dentition ratio are caused by disorders in the growth and formation of facial bones and skull base. X-ray characteristics of different types of such disorders are presented.

Changes in the facial skull of 74 patients with untimely synostosis of craniocerebral sutures and pathologic shape of the cerebral skull are characterized. All the patients presented with shortened base of the skull, gross deformations of the facial skull. Certain regularities in the formation of these defects were distinguished.

Analysis of seventy-seven monocular photographs of the fundus oculi of normal subjects and patients with various glaucoma stages has brought the authors to a conclusion on the diagnostic value of the symptom of the optic disk 'outlining' vessels, phenomenon of the optic disk 'sinking', phenomenon of retinal nerve fiber 'loss', and reduced number and diameter of the retinal vessels in the patients with initial stages of glaucoma.
