Despite the remarkable biological effects of berberine (BBR), particularly on fertility, its bioavailability is low. This study aims to test the effectiveness of novel nanostructured biloalbuminosomes (BILS) of BBR and its metabolite berberrubine (M1) in treatment of testicular and prostatic lesions. M1 was semi-synthesized from BBR using microwave-assisted reaction. The solvent evaporation method was used to prepare BBR-BILS and M1-BILS by three different concentrations of sodium cholate (SC) or glycocholate (SG), along with the incorporation of bovine serum albumin (BSA). The prepared BILS were fully characterized. Male infertility was induced by cadmium (Cd) at 5â¯mg/kg and lead (Pb) at 20â¯mg/kg contaminated water for 90â¯days, followed by treatment with BBR, M1, and their BILS (BBR-BILS and M1-BILS) for 45â¯days. Blood male infertility markers, testicular and prostatic oxidative stress status, autophagy, inflammation, along with testicular and prostatic concentrations of Cd and Pb, and histopathology of both tested tissues were determined using standardized protocols. The optimal BBR-BILS and M1-BILS nano-preparations, containing 30â¯mg SC, were chosen based on the best characterization properties of the preparations. Both nano-preparations improved heavy metals-induced testicular and prostatic deformities, as they reduced Bax and elevated Bcl-2 expressions in both tissues. Moreover, they activated the mTOR/PI3K pathway with a marked reduction in AMPK and activated LC-3II protein levels. Consequently, testicular and prostatic architecture and functions were improved. This study is the first to report the preparation of BBR and M1 BILS nano-preparations and proved their superior efficacy compared to free drugs against testicular and prostatic deformities by attenuating oxidative stress-induced excessive autophagy, offering a new hope to manage male infertility.

BACKGROUND: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rehabilitation is a common intervention after ACL reconstruction. Since different types of exercise can influence muscle and kinematic parameters in diverse ways, the training order between the knee and ankle joints may also change gait parameters. PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate whether the training sequence of the knee and ankle joints (knee followed by ankle training or vice-versa) in an ACL reconstruction (ACLR) rehabilitation program has any effects on knee extension and flexion torques. METHODS: Forty-two men (aged 20-30 years) with ACLR participated in this study. They were randomly allocated to receive one of two interventions: (A) knee joint training followed by ankle training or (B) ankle joint training followed by knee training. After five weeks (four weeks of intervention and one-week washout), participants crossed from one group to another for an additional four weeks. Knee extension and flexion torques were assessed during the stance phase of the gait cycle before and after the intervention program. RESULTS: Two-way Mixed-design MANOVA showed that knee extension torque improved significantly in both groups after training (p = 0.001, Cohen's D = 0.65), while the knee flexion torque increased significantly only in group B (p= 0.001, Cohen's D = 0.97). When comparing both groups, patients of group B presented significant improvements in the post-training mean values of all tested variables compared with group A. CONCLUSION: Starting a post-ACLR rehabilitation program with ankle training followed by knee training is better to improve knee flexion and extension torques during the stance phase of the gait cycle than starting the program by training the knee first, followed by the ankle. Future studies using a mixed-gender sample and different types of ACLR operations are necessary to examine whether similar improvements will happen as well as to test their effects on many sports activities.

ß-lactam resistance is a significant global public health issue. Outbreaks of bacteria resistant to extended-spectrum ß-lactams and carbapenems are serious health concerns that not only complicate medical care but also impact patient outcomes. The primary objective of this work was to express and purify two soluble recombinant representative serine ßlactamases using Escherichia coli strain as an expression host and pET101/D as a cloning vector. Furthermore, a second objective was to evaluate the potential, innovative, and safe use of galloylquinic acid (GQA) from Copaifera lucens as a potential ß-lactamase inhibitor.In the present study, blaCTX-M-15 and blaKPC-2 represented genes encoding for serine ß-lactamases that were cloned from parent isolates of E. coli and K. pneumoniae, respectively, and expression as well as purification were performed. Moreover, susceptibility results demonstrated that recombinant cells became resistant to all test carbapenems (MICs; 64-128 µg/mL) and cephalosporins (MICs; 128-512 µg/mL). The MICs of the tested ß-lactam antibiotics were determined in combination with 4 µg/mL of GQA, clavulanic acid, or tazobactam against E. coli strains expressing CTX-M-15 or KPC-2-ß-lactamases. Interestingly, the combination with GQA resulted in an important reduction in the MIC values by 64-512-fold to the susceptible range with comparable results for other reference inhibitors. Additionally, the half-maximal inhibitory concentration of GQA was determined using nitrocefin as a ß-lactamase substrate. Data showed that the test agent was similar to tazobactam as an efficient inhibitors of the test enzymes, recording smaller IC50 values (CTX-M-15; 17.51 for tazobactam, 28.16 µg/mL for GQA however, KPC-2; 20.91 for tazobactam, 24.76 µg/mL for GQA) compared to clavulanic acid. Our work introduces GQA as a novel non-ß-lactam inhibitor, which interacts with the crucial residues involved in ß-lactam recognition and hydrolysis by non-covalent interactions, complementing the enzyme's active site. GQA markedly enhanced the potency of ß-lactams against carbapenemase and extended-spectrum ß-lactamase-producing strains, reducing the MICs of ß-lactams to the susceptible range. The ß-lactamase inhibitory activity of GQA makes it a promising lead molecule for the development of more potent ß-lactamase inhibitors.

The bacterial light-dependent energy metabolism can be divided into two types: oxygenic and anoxygenic photosynthesis. Bacterial oxygenic photosynthesis is similar to plants and is characteristic for cyanobacteria. Bacterial anoxygenic photosynthesis is performed by anoxygenic phototrophs, especially green sulfur bacteria (GSB; family Chlorobiaceae) and purple sulfur bacteria (PSB; family Chromatiaceae). In anoxygenic photosynthesis, hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is used as the main electron donor, which differs from plants or cyanobacteria where water is the main source of electrons. This review mainly focuses on the microbiology of GSB, which may be found in water or soil ecosystems where H2S is abundant. GSB oxidize H2S to elemental sulfur. GSB possess special structures-chlorosomes-wherein photosynthetic pigments are located. Chlorosomes are vesicles that are surrounded by a lipid monolayer that serve as light-collecting antennas. The carbon source of GSB is carbon dioxide, which is assimilated through the reverse tricarboxylic acid cycle. Our review provides a thorough introduction to the comparative eco-physiology of GSB and discusses selected application possibilities of anoxygenic phototrophs in the fields of environmental management, bioremediation, and biotechnology.

BACKGROUND: Previous meta-analyses have shown mixed results regarding the association between eating disorders (EDs) and type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). Our paper aimed to analyse different EDs and disordered eating behaviours that may be practiced by patients with T1DM. METHODS: A literature search of PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science was conducted on 17 January 2023, using the key terms "T1DM," "Eating Disorders" and "Bulimia." Only observational controlled studies were included. The Revman software (version 5.4) was used for the analysis. RESULTS: T1DM was associated with increased risk of ED compared with nondiabetic individuals (RR = 2.47, 95% CI = 1.84-3.32, p-value < 0.00001), especially bulimia nervosa (RR = 2.80, 95% CI = 1.18-6.65, p-value = 0.02) and binge eating (RR = 1.53, 95% CI = 1.18-1.98, p-value = 0.001). Our analysis has shown that increased risk of ED among T1DM persisted regardless of the questionnaire used to diagnose ED; DM-validated questionnaires (RR = 2.80, 95% CI = 1.91-4.12, p-value < 0.00001) and generic questionnaires (RR = 2.03, 95% CI = 1.27-3.23, p-value = 0.003). Prevalence of insulin omission/misuse was 10.3%; diabetic females demonstrated a significantly higher risk of insulin omission and insulin misuse than diabetic males. CONCLUSION: Our study establishes a significant and clear connection between EDs and T1DM, particularly bulimia and binge eating, with T1DM. Moreover, female diabetics are at higher risk of insulin misuse/omission. Early proactive screening is essential and tailored; comprehensive interventions combining diabetes and ED components are recommended for this population, with referral to a specialised psychiatrist.

We have synthesized cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4) using the sucrose auto-combustion method and subsequently employed the in situ polymerization technique to fabricate ternary composites comprising CoFe2O4, polyaniline (PANI), and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). In this novel investigation, we explored the influence of varying MWCNTs ratios on these composites' structural, magnetic, thermal, and electrical properties. The crystal structures of the synthesized composites were analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), while Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy revealed changes in bonding patterns, including the disappearance of ferrite bonds and the emergence of new ones. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images illustrated a complete coating of PANI on both MWCNTs and CoFe2O4 particles, resulting in a substantial reduction in magnetization compared to pure CoFe2O4 ferrite due to PANI's nonmagnetic nature. Vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) measurements confirmed this reduction, indicating a decrease to 7.3 emu.g-1. Thermal analysis demonstrated an enhancement in thermal stability with increasing MWCNTs content, as evidenced by an increase in the temperature equivalent for half decomposition (T50) from 486 to 522 °C for composites with 40% MWCNTs. Moreover, the electrical conductivity showed a corresponding rise with MWCNTs content, increasing from 3.1 × 10-3 Ω-1.cm-1 to 2.2 × 10-2 Ω-1.cm-1, possibly indicating charge transfer from PANI to MWCNTs. To assess practical applications, we investigated the ability of the composite with 40% MWCNTs to remove phenol red (PR) dye from aqueous solutions. Through a systematic study of adsorption parameters and kinetics, we determined optimal conditions for effective dye removal and elucidated the underlying adsorption mechanism. Our results demonstrated the composite's efficiency in dye removal, with a 6.4 mg·g-1 capacity for PR dye, highlighting its potential for environmental remediation efforts.

In this work, a novel adsorbent called magnetite/MXene (Fe3O4/Ti3C2) nanocomposite was prepared, characterized, and applied for the removal of organic dye, malachite green dye (MG), from both real water and model solutions. Numerous techniques were used to characterize the prepared Fe3O4/Ti3C2 nanocomposite: XRD, SEM, TEM, FTIR, and surface area analysis. The outcomes showed that the Al layer had been selectively etched, that the MAX phase (Ti3AlC2) had been transformed into layered Ti3C2 MXene, that the cubic Fe3O4 phase had been prepared, and that the prepared Fe3O4 NPs had been evenly distributed on the MXene surface. Also, SEM pictures showed the successful etching of the MAX phase and the formation of the ultrathin multi-layered MXene, which the Fe3O4 NPs covered upon forming the Fe3O4/Ti3C2 nanocomposite at the surface and inside the ultrathin multi-layered MXene. The effect of different operational parameters affecting the removal process was explored and optimized. The MG dye was removed mostly within 60 min, with a 4.68 mg/g removal capacity using 5 mg of the Fe3O4/Ti3C2 nanocomposite. The removal was examined from both kinetic and thermodynamic perspectives, and the findings demonstrated the spontaneity of the removal process as well as the applicability of fractal-like pseudo-first-order and fractal-like pseudo-second-order kinetics when compared to other kinetics models. The Fe3O4/Ti3C2 nanocomposite was used to remove MG dye from real spiked environmental water samples, and the results revealed the successful remediation of the real samples from the organic dye by the Fe3O4/Ti3C2 nanocomposite. Accordingly, Fe3O4/Ti3C2 nanocomposite could be considered a potential adsorbent for the environmental remediation of polluted water.

PURPOSE: We aimed to evaluate the effect of cervical disc herniation (CDH) and lumbar disc herniation (LDH) on female sexual functioning before and after surgical intervention. METHODS: The current study was conducted from February 2022 to February 2023. A total of 100 sexually active female patients in their reproductive phase who were diagnosed with CDH and LDH based on physical examination and previous magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) results, as well as 50 healthy females, were enrolled. The female subjects were evaluated using the validated Arabic version of the female sexual function index (ArFSFI), a 0 to 10 visual analogue scale (VAS), the Oswestry disability index (ODI) and Beck's depression index (BDI). RESULTS: The baseline ArFSFI domains and total scores were greatest in the controls, followed by the CDH group. The ArFSFI domains and total scores were greatest in the control group, followed by the postoperative ArFSFI domains and total scores in the cervical group. The variations in satisfaction, pain, and overall ArFSFI ratings were significant across research groups. The difference in desire, arousal, lubrication, and orgasm was substantial in the lumbosacral group, but there were no significant changes between the cervical and control groups. Postoperatively, ArFSFI domains and overall scores improved in both of the cervical and lumbar groups. Both research groups' ODI score and grade improved after surgery. Finally, both groups' BDI score and grade improved after surgery. CONCLUSION: Female sexual dysfunctions caused by CDH and LDH improved considerably after surgery.

This study aimed to improve the dispersibility of phenolic compounds from black rice bran through the encapsulation process within nanoemulsion. The study focused on assessing the stability of the nanoemulsions, which were prepared using a combination of surfactants with distinct hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) values and sunflower oil under different thermal treatments and storage conditions. The study revealed a significant correlation between the mixed surfactant HLB value and the nanoemulsions properties, including average particle size, polydispersity index (PDI), and ζ-potential. Specifically, an increase in the HLB value was associated with a decrease in the initial average particle size. The encapsulated polyphenols exhibited remarkable stability over a storage period of up to 30 days at different temperatures with no significant changes observed in particle size or PDI. The study also investigated the impact of different ionic strengths (0.2, 0.5, and 1.00 mol L-1 NaCl) on the physical stability and antioxidant black rice bran extract nanoemulsion, and the results revealed that adding NaCl influenced the particle size and surface charge of the nanoemulsions. Total phenolic content and DPPH results demonstrated a significant impact of salt concentration on antioxidant properties, with varying trends observed among the HLB formulations. Furthermore, the behavior of the encapsulated extracts during digestion was examined, and their antioxidant activity was evaluated.

Seahorses, part of the small marine teleost fish family Syngnathidae, are increasingly under threat due to habitat degradation and overfishing. Notably used in traditional Chinese medicine, these fish have demonstrated significant pharmacological and cosmetic properties. In Morocco, however, seahorses are minimally exploited. This study aims to explore the biodiversity of Moroccan seahorses, focusing on identifying species from the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts both morphologically and molecularly, and evaluating their antioxidant activity. The research involved collecting 62 dried seahorses from local fishermen. These specimens were subjected to detailed morphological and molecular identification through the DNA barcoding method, concentrating on the mitochondrial marker Cytochrome Oxidase I (COI) gene. Following DNA extraction and amplification, the sequences were analyzed for species identification and phylogenetic relationships. Additionally, the antioxidant activities of the seahorses were quantified using assays such as ABTS, reducing power, phosphomolybdenum, and ß-carotene-linoleic acid. The combined morphological and molecular analyses consistently identified all specimens as Hippocampus hippocampus, and phylogenetic trees suggested a close relation with European and Turkish counterparts. Furthermore, the antioxidant assays revealed significant activity, with the ABTS assay showing an IC50 of 14.571 mg/mL ± 0.334, and the ß-carotene-linoleic acid assay showing an IC50 of 1.273 mg/mL ± 0.166. The reducing power and phosphomolybdenum assays recorded EC50 values of 1.868 mg/mL ± 0.033 and 1.156 mg/mL ± 0.112, respectively. These results confirm the high antioxidant potential of Moroccan seahorses, suggesting their therapeutic value and necessitating measures for their biodiversity preservation at a national level.

Patient-derived organoid models hold promise for advancing clinical cancer research, including diagnosis and personalized and precision medicine approaches, and cytology, in particular, plays a pivotal role in this process. These three-dimensional multicellular structures are heterogeneous, potentially maintain the cancer phenotype, and conserve the genomic, transcriptomic, and epigenomic patterns of the parental tumors. To ensure that only tumor tissue is used for organoid development, cytologic validation is necessary before initiating the process of organoid generation. Here, we explore the technology of tumor organoids and discuss the fundamental application of cytology as a simple and cost-effective approach toward organoid development. We also underscore the potential application of organoid development in drug efficacy studies for lung cancer and head and neck tumors. Additionally, we stress the importance of using fine-needle aspiration to generate tumoroids.

The pandemic outbreak of COVID-19 caused by the new severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) is a global health burden. To date, there is no highly effective antiviral therapy to eradicate the virus; as a result, researchers are racing to introduce new potential therapeutic agents. Alternatively, traditional immunity boosters and symptomatic treatment based on natural bioactive compounds are also an option. The 3-chymotrypsin-like protease (3CLpro) crystal structure, the main proteolytic enzyme of SARS-CoV-2, has been unraveled, allowing the development of effective protease inhibitors via in silico and biological studies. In COVID-19 infected patients, the loss of lung function, and mortality are reported to be linked to several inflammatory mediators and cytokines. In this context, the approach of introducing immunomodulatory agents may be considered a dual lifesaving strategy in combination with antiviral drugs. This study aims to provide immunomodulatory natural products exhibiting potential protease inhibitory activities. Selected groups of alkaloids of different classes and two prenylated phenylpropanoids from the Brazilian green propolis were in silico screened for their ability to inhibit COVID-19 3CLpro protease. Results showed that compounds exhibited binding energy scores with values ranging from -6.96 to -3.70 compared to the reference synthetic protease inhibitor O6K with a binding energy score of -7.57. O6K binding energy was found comparable with lead phytochemicals in our study, while their toxicity and drug-likeness criteria are better than that of O6K. The activities of these molecules are mainly ascribed to their ability to form hydrogen bonding with 3CLpro crucial amino acid residues of the catalytic site. In addition, the molecular dynamics simulations further showed that some of these compounds formed stable complexes as evidenced by the occupancy fraction measurements. The study suggested that the major immunomodulators 3ß, 20α-diacetamido-5α-pregnane, (20S)-(benzamido)-3ß-(N,N-dimethyamino)-pregnane, and baccharin are 3CLpro inhibitors. Biological screenings of these phytochemicals will be valuable to experimentally validate and consolidate the results of this study before a rigid conclusion is reached, which may pave the way for the development of efficient modulatory bioactive compounds with dual bioactions in COVID-19 intervention. INTRODUCTION: We aimed to assess the sexual and the reproductive functions in males post COVID-19 infection in Beni-Suef Governorate. METHODS: One hundred men were recruited in the current study. All participants were assessed by the Arabic validated version of the International Index of the Erectile Function 5 (ArIIEF-5), semen analysis, and Hospital Depression and Anxiety Scale (HADS). Finally, morning testosterone serum level was measured. RESULTS: There were significant decreases in the sperm total motility, the ArIIEF-5 score, and serum total testosterone in the post COVID-19 patients after 3 months when compared to the controls. However, there were significant increases in the sperm total motility, the ArIIEF-5 score, and serum total testosterone in the post COVID-19 patients after 6 months group when compared to the post COVID-19 patients after 3 months group. Moreover, there was a significant increase in the HADS score in the post COVID-19 patients after 3 months when compared to the controls. In contrast, there was a significant decrease in the HADS score in the post COVID-19 patients after 6 months when compared to the post COVID-19 patients after 3 months. CONCLUSION: Our study had shown temporary impairment of sexual and reproductive functions in post COVID-19 convalescent males especially after 6 months from the onset of the infection.

INTRODUCTION: Galectin-1 (Gal-1) and galectin-3 (Gal-3) are expressed by many immune cells and receive considerable attention in the context of immunity. We aimed to compare between seminal plasma and serum levels of Gal-1 and Gal-3 in azoospermic patients and fertile men. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted at the andrology outpatient clinic from January (2022) to September (2022). A total of 90 participants were enrolled and divided into two equal groups: azoospermic and normal group. Semen analysis was done for all participants. Hormonal profile including FSH, LH, serum prolactin, total testosterone and estradiol was performed as well as assessment of serum and seminal levels of Gal-1 and Gal-3 by ELISA commercial kits. Finally, scrotal Duplex was done in standing and supine position. RESULTS: Serum and seminal levels of Gal-1 and Gal-3 were statistically significant higher in azoospermic patients compared with normal individuals (p < 0.001 for all). In addition, in healthy individuals there were statistically significant positive correlations between serum levels of Gal-1 and age, FSH, LH levels (r = 0.296, p = 0.005; r = 0.333, p = < 0.001; r = 0.312, p = 0.003, respectively) and serum levels of Gal-2 and FSH and LH (r = 0.436, p < 0.001; r = 0.350, p < 0.001, respectively), whereas serum Gal-3 showed a borderline positive correlation with age (r = 0.2, p = 0.059). Additionally, statistically significant positive correlations between seminal levels of Gal-1 and Gal-3 and free testosterone in healthy individuals were reported (r = 0.205, p = 0.053; r = 0.219, p = 0.038, respectively). On the other hand, there were negative correlations between serum and seminal levels of Gal-1 and Gal-3, total and progressive sperm motility, sperm count and abnormal sperm forms in healthy individuals (r = -0.382, p < 0.001; r = -0.405, p < 0.001; r = -0.376, p < 0.001; r = -0.364, p < 0.001) (r = -0.394, p < 0.001; r = -0.467, p < 0.001; r = -0.413, p < 0.001; r = -0.433, p < 0.001); (r = -0.372, p < 0.001; r = -0.377, p < 0.001; r = -0.317, p = 0.002; r = -0.311, p = 0.003)(r = -0.445, p < 0.001; r = -0.498, p < 0.001; r = -0.453, p < 0.001; r = -0.463, p < 0.001, respectively). Furthermore, statistically significant positive correlations between serum levels of Gal-1 and Gal-3 and age in azoospermic patients were reported (r = 0.511, p < 0.001; r = 0.390, p = 0.008, respectively). On the other hand, there were negative correlations between seminal Gal-1 and estradiol (E2) and seminal Gal-3 and FSH and LH in azoospermic patients (r= -0.318, p = 0.033; r = -0.322, p = 0.031; r = -0.477, p < 0.001, respectively). Also, negative correlations between serum Gal-3 and total and free testosterone in azoospermic patients were detected (r = -0.396, p = 0.007; r = -0.375, p = 0.011, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Elevated serum and seminal levels of Gal-1 and Gal-3 have detrimental effects on spermatogenesis. Furthermore, the current study demonstrated potential regulatory effects of reproductive hormones on Gal-1 and Gal-3. Thus, future studies are needed to confirm such findings.

INTRODUCTION: The fruit oil from Acrocomia aculeata (Macauba or Bocaiuva) is highly rich in antioxidants and other bioactive compounds, emerging as a natural source of high potential for the modulation of chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs), like diabetes. Its effects on chronic NCDs are poorly studied yet. Our review aimed to evaluate the therapeutic results of pharmaceutical preparations containing Acrocomia aculeata pulp oil that are used for chronic NCDs. METHOD: A search was performed using PICO acronyms in English, Portuguese, and Spanish languages in the MEDLINE®, PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, LILACs, and CENTRAL Cochrane Library databases. The degree of agreement for selection and eligibility was significant (Kappa= 0.992; 95% CI: 0.988-0.996). The difference between the intervention and control groups for blood glucose reduction was 63.5 ± 69.5 mg/dL (p<0.0001). RESULT: Overall, an improvement percentage of 55.1 ± 0.1 was observed for the variables associated with chronic NCDs, which represented 89.96% of the relative risk reduction (efficacy). CONCLUSION: The Acrocomia aculeate pulp oil exhibited promising results in experimental studies for glycemic control and reduction of a specific tumor, indicating a good potential to be explored for chronic NCDs treatment.

Synthesis of nanoparticles (NPs) for many different uses requires the development of environmentally friendly synthesis protocols. In this article, we present a simple and environmentally friendly method to synthesize lead oxide (PbO) NPs from the plant material of the Mangifera indica. Analytical techniques such as spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and microscopy were used to characterize the synthesized PbO NPs, and their photo-electrocatalytic and antifungal properties were also evaluated. H2O2 was used to investigate the efficacy of removing methylene blue dye. At a range of pH values, H2O2 was used to study the role of hydroxyl radicals in the breakdown of methylene blue dye. Methylene blue dyes are more easily eliminated due to increased generation of the *OH radical during removal. Dye degradation was also significantly affected by the aqueous medium's pH. Additionally, the electrocatalytic properties of the PbO NPs adapted electrode were studied in CH3COONa aqueous solution using cyclic voltammetry. Excellent electrocatalytic properties of the PbO NPs are shown by the unity of the anodic and cathodic peaks of the modified electrode in comparison to the stranded electrode. Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus niger, and Candida glabrata were some fungi tested with the PbO NPs. Against A. flavus (40%) and A. niger (50%), and C. glabrata (75%), the PbO NPs display an excellent inhibition zone. Finally, PbO NPs were used in antioxidant studies with the powerful antioxidant 2, 2 diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH). This study presents a simple and environmentally friendly method for synthesizing PbO NPs with multiple uses, including photo-electrocatalytic and antimicrobial activity.

The ongoing development of novel drugs for breast cancer aims to improve therapeutic outcomes, reduce toxicities, and mitigate resistance to chemotherapeutic agents. Doxorubicin (Dox) is known for its significant side effects caused by non-specific cytotoxicity. In this study, we investigated the antitumor activity of galloylquinic acids (BF) and the beneficial role of their combination with Dox in an Ehrlich ascites carcinoma (EAC)-bearing mouse model, as well as their cytotoxic effect on MCF-7 cells. The EAC-mice were randomized into five experimental groups: normal saline, Dox (2 mg/kg, i.p), BF (150 mg/kg, orally), Dox and BF combined mixture, and a control group. Mice were subjected to a 14-day treatment regimen. Results showed that BF compounds exerted chemopreventive effects in EAC mice group by increasing mean survival time, decreasing tumor volume, inhibiting ascites tumor cell count, modulating body weight changes, and preventing multi-organ histopathological alterations. BF suppressed the increased levels of inflammatory mediators (IL-6 and TNF-α) and the angiogenic marker VEGF in the ascitic fluid. In addition, BF and their combination with Dox exhibited significant cytotoxic activity on MCF-7 cells by inhibiting cell viability and modulating Annexin A1 level. Moreover, BF treatments could revert oxidative stress, restore liver and kidney functions, and normalize blood cell counts.

Purpose: This study sought to assess the prevalence of thrombocytopenia (TCP), underlying aetiologies of chronic liver disease, and the grading and prognostic systems for chronic liver disease (CLD) using non-invasive biomarkers: the Fibrosis index and the Model for End-Stage Liver Disease-Na (MELD-Na) Score, respectively. Patients and Methods: This was a 15-month multi-centric cross-sectional study of 105 patients with chronic liver disease (CLD). The study was conducted using Sept 2019 to Nov 2020 admission records of CLD patients from Ma'abar City in Dhamar Governorate, Yemen. Results: A total of 63 (60%) and 42 (40%) patients were identified as thrombocytopenic and non-thrombocytopenic, respectively. The means ± SD of the MELD score and FI were 19 ± 7.302 and 4.1 ± 1.06. TCP prevalence among leukopenic and non-leukopenic patients was 89.5% and 53.5%, respectively (P = 0.004). Likewise, the prevalence of traditional-ultrasonography-diagnosed cirrhotic patients needing liver transplantation (LT) was 82.3% versus 61.3% among corresponding non-cirrhotic patients (P = 0.000). Conclusion: The prevalence of TCP among the participants of this study was similar to the global rate. However, the prevalence of decompensation was much higher among CLD patients than that found elsewhere, highlighting a need to improve methods for the early diagnosis of CLD in Yemen. This study also identified problems with the diagnostic work-up for non-infectious aetiologies of CLD. The findings suggest the need to improve clinician awareness about effective diagnostic strategies for these aetiologies.

The present study compared seminal calbindin 2 (CALB 2) levels and semen parameters in men with and without varicocele. CALB 2 is also known as calretinin and 29 kDa calbindin. The study was a case-control study conducted from April (2021) to March (2022) in the andrology department at Beni-Suef University hospital. The study included four matched groups: group (I) were controls (fertile normozoospermic men without varicocele) (n=24). Group (II) were fertile normozoospermic men with varicocele (n=24). Group (III) were infertile oligoasthenoteratozoospermia (OAT) men without varicocele (n=24). Group (IV) were infertile OAT men with varicocele (n=24). The lowest levels of seminal CALB 2 were found in patients with severe oligozoospermia which showed a statistically significant difference when compared to seminal CALB 2 in patients with normal, mildly low, or moderately low sperm counts. There were significant negative correlations between sperm concentration, sperm motility and percentage of normal sperm forms and seminal CALB 2. Seminal plasma CALB 2 may play a role in the negative impact of varicocele on the semen parameters especially sperm concentration, sperm motility and percentage of sperm normal forms. Future studies are needed to verify these findings.

The production of green hydrogen in water electrolyzers is limited by the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). State-of-the-art electrocatalysts are based on Ir. Ru electrocatalysts are a suitable alternative provided their performance is improved. Here we show that low-Ru-content pyrochlores (R2MnRuO7, R = Y, Tb and Dy) display high activity and durability for the OER in acidic media. Y2MnRuO7 is the most stable catalyst, displaying 1.5 V at 10 mA cm-2 for 40 h, or 5000 cycles up to 1.7 V. Computational and experimental results show that the high performance is owed to Ru sites embedded in RuMnOx surface layers. A water electrolyser with Y2MnRuO7 (with only 0.2 mgRu cm-2) reaches 1 A cm-2 at 1.75 V, remaining stable at 200 mA cm-2 for more than 24 h. These results encourage further investigation on Ru catalysts in which a partial replacement of Ru by inexpensive cations can enhance the OER performance.
