Abstract Introduction: Aquatic birds (AB) are usually associated with wetlands, which provide refuge, food, and/or nesting sites for resident and migratory species. Despite their ecological importance, there is little knowledge on AB in some tropical environments, such as those found on the Colima coast. Objective: To investigate the spatial and temporal composition of the AB community in Juluapan Lagoon, Colima, Central Mexican Pacific. Methods: Monthly counts were conducted between June 2017 and May 2018 during low-tide conditions to record habitat use by AB. Species richness and bird counts were obtained to compare sampling areas; mean richness and number of individuals were compared between seasons. Results: We detected 53 species and 5 750 individuals. The highest species richness and relative abundance values were obtained in winter at the lagoon area farthest from the connection with the marine system, where anthropogenic activity is lower. Diversity was greater in zones 2 and 3 in spring, summer, and fall. Muddy flats were the most used environment, and the most frequent activity was resting. Nesting activity was only recorded in the middle of the lagoon at the mangrove during spring. "Shorebirds" and "waders" were the most dominant groups in the bird community of the Juluapan lagoon. Conclusions: This coastal wetland is a site of great biological importance for aquatic birds; thus, conservation measures should be implemented, and there should be a continuous study of the effects of anthropogenic pressure.


Resumen Introducción: Las aves acuáticas (AA) son usualmente relacionadas a los humedales debido a que éstos funcionan como sitios de refugio, alimentación y anidación de diferentes especies residentes y migratorias. Sin embargo, el conocimiento sobre las aves acuáticas en algunos humedales es nulo. Objetivo: Investigar la composición espacio-temporal de la comunidad de AA en la laguna Juluapan, Colima, en el Pacífico Central Mexicano. Métodos: Entre junio de 2017 y mayo de 2018 se llevaron a cabo conteos mensuales en condiciones de marea baja para registrar el uso de hábitat de las AA. Se obtuvieron valores de riqueza de especies y número de individuos para realizar comparaciones entre zonas de muestreo, así como el promedio del número de especies y número de individuos para comparaciones entre temporadas. Resultados: Se registraron un total de 53 especies y 5 750 individuos. Los valores de riqueza de especies y densidad de individuos fueron más altos durante invierno, en la zona más alejada al ambiente marino, donde la actividad antropogénica es menor. La diversidad tuvo valores más altos en la zona 2 y 3, durante primavera, verano y otoño. El ambiente más explotado por las aves fueron las planicies lodosas; y el descanso fue la actividad más frecuente. Asimismo, la actividad de anidación sólo se registró en el manglar de la zona media durante primavera. Las "aves playeras" y "aves zancudas" fueron los grupos más predominantes en la comunidad de aves de la laguna Juluapan. Conclusiones: Este humedal costero es un sitio de gran importancia biológica para aves acuáticas, por lo que resulta necesario la implementación de medidas de conservación, así como el estudio de los efectos por la presión antropogénica.

BACKGROUND: The study aimed to investigate the impact of lymph node ratio (LNR) on survival in patients with resectable gallbladder adenocarcinoma. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the National Cancer Database from 2004 to 2020. We included patients with gallbladder adenocarcinoma who had undergone resection of the primary site as well as adequate lymphadenectomy. Exclusions comprised patients with distant metastasis and missing key data. LNR was calculated as a proportion of positive lymph nodes (LNs) to examined LNs. RESULTS: Patients were stratified into LNR groups: LNR0 - 343 patients (55%); 168 (26.9%) patients with LNR < 30%; and 113 (18.1%) with LNR ≥ 30%. The mean age was 67.3 ± 10.7 years, with 71.6% being female and 75.8% identifying as white. The mean overall survival (OS) was 52.8 months for the LNR0 group, 36.3 months for LNR < 30%, and 27 months for LNR ≥ 30% (p < 0.001). The difference in survival was significant when adjusted for adjuvant chemotherapy status and surgical margins using Cox regression - HR 3.2 (2.4-4.5 95% CI) for LNR < 30% and HR 4.9 (3.5-6.8 95% CI) for LNR ≥ 30%. CONCLUSION: The study suggests that LNR is a valuable prognostic factor for resectable gallbladder cancer patients and could potentially guide treatment decisions.

BACKGROUND: The pipeline embolization device (PED) has been increasingly used to treat brain aneurysms; however, concerns have been raised about braid stability with newer drawn filled tubing technology devices. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate braid stability of PED early generations using data from the PREMIER trial. METHODS: All consecutive intracranial aneurysms treated with PED (Classic and Flex) within the PREMIER trial were reviewed for braid stability (fish mouthing, foreshortening, braid bump, braid collapsing). Immediate postprocedure cone-beam CT and angiography were compared with 1- and 2- years' follow-up. Analyses included safety, measured with the modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score, including +1 mRS point and a good clinical outcome (mRS score 0-2), vessel stenosis ≥50%, effectiveness measured with Raymond-Roy Scale, and re-treatment rates. RESULTS: 133/141 aneurysms had a complete dataset. 8/133 (6%) aneurysms showed braid deformations. Inter-reader agreement was excellent (κ=0.83). Braid deformations were statistically significantly associated with in-stent vessel stenosis >50% (P=0.029), without impact on effectiveness or safety. Fish mouthing was found in 1/133 (0.75%) at 1 year, causing >50% vessel stenosis. Foreshortening occurred in 6/133 (4.5%), and braid bump in 1/133 (0.75%) associated with severe in-stent stenosis. Four other cases (3.0%) of asymptomatic in-stent stenosis due to neointimal hyperplasia were seen without braid changes. No new braid stability deformations were found at the 2-year follow-up. CONCLUSION: Our study demonstrates excellent braid stability among patients treated with the PED Classic and Flex in the PREMIER trial. Within the uncommon braid changes observed, none affected the PED safety or efficacy. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: NCT02186561.

RESUMEN

Understanding the brain requires studying its multiscale interactions from molecules to networks. The increasing availability of large-scale datasets detailing brain circuit composition, connectivity, and activity is transforming neuroscience. However, integrating and interpreting this data remains challenging. Concurrently, advances in supercomputing and sophisticated modeling tools now enable the development of highly detailed, large-scale biophysical circuit models. These mechanistic multiscale models offer a method to systematically integrate experimental data, facilitating investigations into brain structure, function, and disease. This review, based on a Society for Neuroscience 2024 MiniSymposium, aims to disseminate recent advances in large-scale mechanistic modeling to the broader community. It highlights (1) examples of current models for various brain regions developed through experimental data integration; (2) their predictive capabilities regarding cellular and circuit mechanisms underlying experimental recordings (e.g., membrane voltage, spikes, local-field potential, electroencephalography/magnetoencephalography) and brain function; and (3) their use in simulating biomarkers for brain diseases like epilepsy, depression, schizophrenia, and Parkinson's, aiding in understanding their biophysical underpinnings and developing novel treatments. The review showcases state-of-the-art models covering hippocampus, somatosensory, visual, motor, auditory cortical, and thalamic circuits across species. These models predict neural activity at multiple scales and provide insights into the biophysical mechanisms underlying sensation, motor behavior, brain signals, neural coding, disease, pharmacological interventions, and neural stimulation. Collaboration with experimental neuroscientists and clinicians is essential for the development and validation of these models, particularly as datasets grow. Hence, this review aims to foster interest in detailed brain circuit models, leading to cross-disciplinary collaborations that accelerate brain research.

In 2023, a second wave of the global mpox epidemic, which is mainly affecting men who have sex with men (MSM), was observed in some countries. Herein, we benefited from a large viral sequence sampling (76/121; 63%) and vast epidemiological data to characterise the re-emergence and circulation of the Monkeypox virus (MPXV) in Portugal during 2023. We also modelled transmission and forecasted public health scenarios through a compartmental susceptible-exposed-infectious-recovered (SEIR) model. Our results suggest that the 2023 mpox wave in Portugal resulted from limited introduction(s) of MPXV belonging to C.1.1 sublineage, hypothetically from Asia, followed by sustained viral transmission and potential exportation to other countries. We estimated that the contribution of the MSM high sexual activity group to mpox transmission was 120 (95% CrI: 30-3553) times higher than that of the low sexual activity group. However, among the high sexual activity group, vaccinated individuals likely contributed approximately eight times less [0.123 (95% CrI: 0.068-0.208)] than the unvaccinated ones. Vaccination was also linked to potential reduced disease severity, with a Mpox Severity Score of 6.0 in the vaccinated group compared to 7.0 in unvaccinated individuals. Scenario analysis indicated that transmission is highly sensitive to sexual behaviour, projecting that a slight increase in the MSM sub-population with high sexual activity can trigger new mpox waves. This study strongly supports that continued vaccination, targeted awareness among risk groups and routine genomic epidemiology is needed to anticipate and respond to novel MPXV threats (e.g. global dissemination of clade I viruses).

Purpose: This study aimed to describe stroke survivors' experiences receiving telemedicine visits at the Lone Star Stroke Consortium during the COVID-19 pandemic. Materials and Methods: A qualitative descriptive phenomenological design was applied to gather patients' telemedicine experiences through in-depth interviews, using a study guide. Audio-recorded interviews were conducted via ZOOM and transcribed verbatim. Two independent reviewers used the Giorgi descriptive method to analyze the data and search for the essence of stroke survivors' follow-up telemedicine experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic. Results: Fifteen underserved patients were recruited: mean age, 51.8 (15.7), and 9 (60%) females. Three themes emerged: (1) vivid memory of the stroke acute phase, (2) poststroke care experiences, and (3) perceived telemedicine experiences. Conclusions: The phenomenon of follow-up telemedicine visits during COVID-19 pandemic, as experienced by the stroke survivors, was positive. It showed patients' improved care access for poststroke visits. Telemedicine was satisfactory, except where the full medical exam was needed. Study findings highlight the individual approach was important, as well as the need for reliable internet and training to improve patients' technological skills. A hybrid approach for post-pandemic follow-up visits (in-person and telemedicine) was recommended by stroke survivors. These findings suggest that telemedicine is feasible and effective for poststroke care. Additional strategies are needed to improve future telemedicine integration into the continuum of care.

Community engagement (CE) is widely acknowledged as a way to enhance the ethics, rigor, and impact of research. Additionally, CE is a demonstrated way to integrate Indigenous and colonial (western) research systems. For these reasons and others, designers of the Multi-site Implementation Evaluation of Tribal Home Visiting (MUSE) used a community-engaged approach to study the implementation of federally funded home-visiting programs across 17 Indigenous communities throughout the United States. This paper describes MUSE's community-engaged approach and its practical applications from the perspective of the MUSE study team. The paper highlights key outcomes attributable to CE, addresses barriers to CE, and details responses to these barriers and their impacts. Adding to the rich evidence base demonstrating the value of community-engaged approaches, MUSE demonstrates that in-depth CE is feasible and valuable in multisite studies done in partnership with Indigenous communities.


La incorporación de la comunidad es reconocida ampliamente como una manera de mejorar la ética, el rigor y el impacto de la investigación. Adicionalmente, la incorporación de la comunidad es una manera que ha demostrado la integración de los sistemas de investigación indígenas y coloniales (occidentales). Por estas y otras razones, quienes diseñaron el programa de Implementación de la Evaluación de Visitas a Casa en Múltiples Lugares Tribales (MUSE) hicieron uso de un acercamiento de participación de la comunidad para estudiar la implementación de programas de visitas a casa subvencionados federalmente a lo largo de 17 comunidades indígenas esparcidas dentro de los Estados Unidos. Este ensayo describe el acercamiento de participación comunitaria de MUSE y sus aplicaciones prácticas desde la perspectiva del equipo de estudio de MUSE. El estudio enfatiza los resultados claves atribuibles a la participación de la comunidad, aborda barreras relacionadas con la participación de la comunidad y detalla las respuestas a esas barreras y al impacto que ellas ejercen. Como un aporte más a la rica base de evidencias que demuestra el valor de los acercamientos de participación comunitaria, MUSE demuestra que una profunda participación de la comunidad es posible y de mucho valor en múltiples estudios realizados en conjunto con las comunidades indígenas.

Gomphrena celosioides, popularly known as perpétua, perpétua brava, bachelor´s button and prostate globe amarahth, is used for the treatment of urinary tract disorders, kidney stones, for skin diseases, infectious diseases, gastrointestinal and respiratory conditions. Rich in phenolic acids and flavonoids, this plant has therefore a potential for use in cancer prevention. Given the above, the present research aimed to evaluate the carcinogenic effect of the ethanolic extract of G. celosioides (EEGc) in an alternative model of Drosophila melanogaster and the genotoxic and antigenotoxic effects in Swiss mice. The larval survival test and the detection of epithelial tumor clones were performed in D. melanogaster. The tested EEGc concentrations were 0.96, 1.92, 3.85 and 7.70 mg/mL. In Swiss mice, the genotoxicity and antigenotoxicity of doses of 100, 1,000 and 2,000 mg/Kg were evaluated. The results showed that EEGc at a concentration of 7.70 mg/mL reduced (p<0.05) larval survival. However, EEGc was not carcinogenic, and the lowest concentration (0.96 mg/mL) prevented (p<0.05) the basal occurrence of epithelial tumors. In mice, EEGc at the highest dose (2,000mg/Kg) increased the frequency of genomic lesions (p<0.05). Yet, none of the doses caused chromosomal lesions (p>0.05). When associated with cyclophosphamide, EEGc was antigenotoxic (p<0.05). The percentages of reduction of genomic damage ranged from 33.39 to 63.23% and of chromosomal damage from 20.00 to 77.19%. In view of the above, it is suggested that EEGc is not carcinogenic, has an antigenotoxic effect and chemopreventive properties.

Interfacial strain engineering in ferroic nanomembranes can broaden the scope of ferroic nanomembrane assembly as well as facilitate the engineering of multiferroic-based devices with enhanced functionalities. Geometrical engineering in these material systems enables the realization of 3-D architectures with unconventional physical properties. Here, 3-D multiferroic architectures are introduced by incorporating barium titanate (BaTiO3, BTO) and cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4, CFO) bilayer nanomembranes. Using photolithography and substrate etching techniques, complex 3-D microarchitectures including helices, arcs, and kirigami-inspired frames are developed. These 3-D architectures exhibit remarkable mechanical deformation capabilities, which can be attributed to the superelastic behavior of the membranes and geometric configurations. It is also demonstrated that dynamic shape reconfiguration of these nanomembrane architectures under electron beam exposure showcases their potential as electrically actuated microgrippers and for other micromechanical applications. This research highlights the versatility and promise of multi-dimensional ferroic nanomembrane architectures in the fields of micro actuation, soft robotics, and adaptive structures, paving the way for incorporating these architectures into stimulus-responsive materials and devices.

Introduction: It is important to take into account variations in structures related to dental pulp for planning the most adequate endodontic treatment management. The objective of this study was to determine the morphology of roots and canals of maxillary first premolars (MFPs) using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Materials and Methods: This retrospective study included a sample of 392 CBCTs of Peruvian adults proportionally selected by sex, age, and quadrant. One MFP per individual was selected for evaluation by a calibrated evaluator based on the number of roots and canal configuration according to the Vertucci classification (VC; Cohen's κ ≥ 0.834). Pearson's χ 2 and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used with a significance level of P < 0.05. Results: Most MFP presented double roots (59.9%) and were VC type IV (52%). Morphology showed a nonsignificant difference by quadrants (P=0.994). A significant positive association was found between the presence of double roots and type IV in men and with older age, while single roots and type I and II were associated with women and younger age (P < 0.05). Double roots were associated with VC type IV (86%) and single roots with types III (34%), II (32%), and I (26%; P < 0.001). Conclusions: MFPs in a Peruvian sample presented a higher frequency of double roots with two separate canals. The morphology of root and canals was associated with age and sex.

OBJECTIVE: Gangliosides GD2 and GD3 have been proposed to be of significance in diagnosis of ovarian masses. We aim to study serum GD2 and GD3 gangliosides as predictors of oncological outcomes among high grade serous (HGS) ovarian cancer (OC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study including biobanked serum samples of HGS OC treated between 2005-2016. Serum GD2 and GD3 concentrations were quantified using indirect ELISA and analyzed with respect to survival. RESULTS: Sixty patients were included. Patients with GD3>12.8ng/mL had shorter PFS when compared to patients with lower level; median 31 vs. 67 months, p =.005. Patients with GD2> 7.1ng/mL had shorter median PFS than those with lower level of (23 vs. 52 months, p =.024.) Patients with GD3>14.5ng/mL had shorter OS vs. patients with lower level (median 31 vs. 70 months, p =.002). In a Cox regression, following adjustment for age, CA-125, disease stage and age, serum elevated GD3 was independently associated with short PFS (adjusted hazard ratio 2.0, 95% CI 1.1-3.8, p=.024). In a separate Cox regression, elevated GD2 was independently associated with PFS (adjusted hazard ratio3.0 (1.2-7.7). p=.019. High serum GD3 and GD2 were independently associated with short OS as well. CONCLUSIONS: High levels of serum GD2 and GD3 in HGS OC were associated with shorter PFS and OS. GD3 is superior to GD2 as a biomarker for prognosis.

PURPOSE: While treatments for primary brain tumors increase survival, they have cognitive sequelae. Neurocognition's anatomical distribution makes it susceptible to brain damage. This study aims to evaluate the contribution of radiotherapy on short-term cognitive impairment. METHODS/PATIENTS: Using a prospective database of cognitive rehabilitation in adults operated on for primary brain tumors, a retrospective sub-analysis of the contribution of radiotherapy was performed. Thirty-four subdivisions of 12 neurocognitive regions were delineated in 48 irradiated patients and 30 non-irradiated patients. In the first group, the correlation between radiation dose and deterioration was evaluated. In all patients, the impact of tumor and surgical changes on dysfunction was calculated and compared with dose-dependent response. RESULTS: The correlation between cognitive status and radiation dose is especially strong and significant in the left hemisphere and in specific subdivisions such as the posterior hippocampus or the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, with the left prevailing over posterior dominance. Memory is the most affected domain 1 month after radiotherapy, as attention is three months later. The hippocampus is involved in various cognitive domains in addition to memory. The prefrontal subregions and the genu of the corpus callosum are more affected by the relationship with disease and surgical changes than by radiation exposure. Patients ongoing a course of radiotherapy do not benefit from concurrent cognitive rehabilitation. CONCLUSIONS: There is a correlation between the dose of radiation received by several encephalic regions and degree of short-term domain-specific cognition decline, considering other factors of risk and cognitive rehabilitation.

Nonlinear optical materials of atomic thickness, such as non-centrosymmetric 2H transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers, have a second-order nonlinear susceptibility (χ(2)) whose intensity can be tuned by strain. However, whether χ(2) is enhanced or reduced by tensile strain is a subject of conflicting reports. Here, we grow high-quality MoSe2 monolayers under controlled biaxial strain created by two different substrates and study their linear and nonlinear optical responses with a combination of experimental and theoretical approaches. Up to a 15-fold overall enhancement in second-harmonic generation (SHG) intensity is observed from MoSe2 monolayers grown on SiO2 when compared to its value on a Si3N4 substrate. By considering an interference contribution from different dielectrics and their thicknesses, a factor of 2 enhancement of χ(2) was attributed to the biaxial strain: substrate interference and strain are independent handles to engineer the SHG strength of non-centrosymmetric 2D materials.

Menopause is associated with reduced endothelial-dependent vasodilation and increased cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. Dietary nitrate, a non-pharmacological approach, may increase vasodilatory capacity consequentially reducing CVD risk. We investigated macro- and microvascular function after acute nitrate supplementation in postmenopausal females (PMF). Vascular function was studied with flow-mediated vasodilation (FMD) and near-infrared post occlusive reactive hyperemia (PORH). Incremental handgrip exercise was performed to investigate blood flow and tissue oxygenation. We hypothesized acute dietary nitrate would not impact resting endothelial measures but would increase post ischemic vasodilation and incremental exercise blood flow. Late-phase PMF (n = 12) participated in a randomized crossover design with 140 mL of nitrate-rich (NR) beetroot juice or nitrate-poor black currant juice. Testing included a 5-min FMD, a 3-min ischemic exercise FMD, and incremental exercise at 10%, 15%, and 20% maximal voluntary contraction to measure blood flow and pressure responses. A p ≤ 0.05 was considered significant. One-way ANOVA indicated lower resting pressures, but no change to FMD, or PORH in either protocol. Two-way repeated measures ANOVA indicated NR supplementation significantly reduced mean arterial pressure at rest and during incremental exercise at all intensities without changes to blood flow. Acute nitrate is effective for resting and exercising blood pressure management in PMF.

BACKGROUND: Cancer is the fourth leading cause of death in adolescents and young adults (AYA) worldwide. Although successful treatment of cancer in AYA has increased in recent years in most of the world, this is not true for many low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) where over 80% of all AYA live. This study investigated the needs of AYA with cancer in parts of Latin America (LATAM) through the perspectives of non-physician health care providers and partners. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews (in Spanish) were conducted with non-physician partners from Mexico, Peru, Central America, and the Caribbean over Zoom. Participants were recruited through previously identified local physicians and international non-physician professionals working in these countries. Transcripts were coded and key themes identified until thematic saturation was reached (Atlas.ti). FINDINGS: Thirty participants representing eight countries were interviewed, providing 1202 min of transcript data. Data were organized into barriers, facilitators, and strategies to improve the delivery of health care for AYA with cancer in LATAM at the patient- (e.g., financial barriers, continued schooling), parent- (e.g., limited medical literacy, advocacy), and hospital-level (e.g., structural barriers, increasing funding). INTERPRETATION: There are many similarities in the barriers and facilitators to AYA care between LATAM and high-income countries (HIC); however, some characteristics are more unique to LATAM, for example, strict age restrictions for pediatric care and abandonment of therapy. As LATAM countries continue to build cancer control programs, there is an opportunity to consider our identified barriers, facilitators, and strategies to address the unique needs of AYA with cancer.

Steal syndrome is characterized by the disruption of blood flow from specific vascular territories due to perfusion via collateral vessels bypassing an obstructed artery segment. In the neurovascular setting, this can lead to entities such as subclavian steal syndrome or the less prevalent double steal phenomenon, primarily associated with atherosclerosis. We present a case of an early 80s patient with cerebrovascular insufficiency who exhibited neurological deficits during mastication. The angiographic evaluation showed occlusion at the origins of the left common carotid and of the brachiocephalic trunk. This configuration caused the left vertebral artery to be the only vessel filling anterograde. The flow in the right vertebral artery is retrograde, filling the subclavian and the right common carotid artery. Endovascular revascularization of the brachiocephalic trunk was successfully performed using a Gore Viabahn VBX Balloon Expandable Stent (W.L. Gore & Associates, Flagstaff, AZ, USA), leading to symptom resolution.

The reactivity of unprecedented CCC-NHC Au(iii) pincer complexes has been investigated, employing a novel methodology for their preparation. Notably, this marks the inaugural case of CCC-NHC Au(iii) pincer complexes with a central aryl moiety where the two arms of the pincer ligand consist of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHC). The stability conferred by the CCC-NHC ligand facilitated the isolation of elusive Au(iii) species, encompassing Au(iii)-formate, Au(iii)-F, Au(iii)-Me, and Au(iii)-alkynyl. Our study also unveiled the elusive Au(iii)-H species, offering valuable insights into its formation, stability, and reactivity. While the CCC-NHC Au(iii)-H complex remains stable at room temperature, its decomposition becomes conspicuous at elevated temperatures (>60 °C), exhibiting a more pronounced tendency under acidic conditions compared to basic ones. Through comprehensive experiments, we indirectly demonstrated the potential of Au(iii)-formate to undergo ß-hydride elimination, becoming a key step in the dehydrogenation of formic acid. Theoretical calculations revealed variations in the reactivity of Au(iii)-H species towards sodium hydride and formic acid, highlighting a link between σ-donation from the pincer ligand and reaction energetics. Pincers with lower electron donation favored the reaction with sodium hydride but impeded the reaction with formic acid, whereas those with higher electron donation exhibited the opposite behavior. Additionally, the CCC-NHC Au(iii) pincer complex exhibited Lewis acid behavior, catalyzing the synthesis of phenols. In summary, the CCC-NHC Au(iii) pincer complex emerges as a versatile platform for isolating reactive species and unraveling elementary catalytic steps.
