RESUMEN

PURPOSE: There is growing evidence that preterm infants born to mothers with chorioamnionitis (CAM) have increased risk of various neonatal morbidities and long-term neurological disorders; however, the effect of CAM on postnatal growth remains insufficiently investigated. This study evaluated the effect of histological CAM on postnatal growth trajectories in very preterm infants using a nationwide neonatal database in Japan. METHOD: A multicenter retrospective study was conducted using clinical data of 4220 preterm neonates who weighed ≤ 1500 g and were born at < 32 weeks of gestation between 2003-2017 (CAM group: n = 2110; non-CAM group: n = 2110). Z-scores for height and weight were evaluated at birth and 3 years of age. Univariable and multivariable analyses were conducted to evaluate the effect of histological CAM on ΔZ-scores of height and weight during the first three years with a stratification by infant sex and the stage of histological CAM. RESULTS: Multivariable analyses showed that histological CAM was associated with accelerated postnatal increase (ΔZ-score) in weight (ß coefficient [95% confidence interval]; 0.10 [0.00 to 0.20]), but not in height among females (0.06 [- 0.04 to 0.15]) and not in height and weight among males (0.04 [- 0.04 to 0.12] and 0.02 [- 0.07 to 0.11], respectively). An interaction analysis demonstrated no significant difference in the effect of histological CAM on the ΔZ-scores of height and weight during the first three years between male and female infants (height, p = 0.81; weight p = 0.25). CONCLUSIONS: Intrauterine exposure to maternal CAM contributes to accelerated postnatal weight gain in female preterm infants during the first three years.

Delta brushes are spontaneous neural activities observed in preterm electroencephalograms (EEGs) and are thought to reflect the activities of subplate neurons in the developing brain. We investigated the haemodynamic responses associated with delta brushes in five preterm infants at two time points (at 33 or 34, and 36 weeks of postmenstrual age), using simultaneous EEG-functional near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). An automated detection algorithm was developed to identify the brush components of delta brushes in the bipolar EEG envelope; we placed eight EEG electrodes. An eight-channel NIRS device was placed around the head of each infant to measure changes in oxy- and deoxy-haemoglobin (Hb) concentrations. Haemodynamic grand averages were calculated for local brushes in each NIRS channel. We classified the responses into five patterns based on changes in oxy- and deoxy-Hb signals (positive in-phase/anti-phase, negative in-phase/anti-phase, and unclassified) and evaluated the relationship between the locations of NIRS measurements and those of brushes, as well as the haemodynamic response patterns and infant age at the time of recording. In all the 10 recordings, we found that positive responses (oxy-Hb increases) predominated, not only in the corresponding areas but also in remote areas. Particularly, notable responses were observed in the bilateral temporal areas. Among the positive responses, the proportion exhibiting an anti-phase pattern was 12% at 33 to 34 weeks of postmenstrual age and 54% at 36 weeks of postmenstrual age. Our unexpected finding of remarkable temporal responses to localised neuronal activity supports the hypothesis that the insula is the most strongly interconnected hub in the developing brain.

Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), associated with high mortality and neurological sequelae, lacks established treatment except therapeutic hypothermia. Clinical-grade multilineage-differentiating stress-enduring (Muse) cells (CL2020) demonstrated safety and efficacy in nonclinical HIE rat models, thereby leading to an investigator-initiated clinical trial to evaluate CL2020 safety and tolerability in neonatal HIE as a single-center open-label dose-escalation study with 9 neonates with moderate-to-severe HIE who received therapeutic hypothermia. Each patient received a single intravenous injection of CL2020 cells between 5 and 14 days of age. The low-dose (3 patients) and high-dose (6 patients) groups received 1.5 × 106 and 1.5 × 107 cells/dose, respectively. The occurrence of any adverse event within 12 weeks following CL2020 administration was the primary endpoint of this trial. No significant changes in physiological signs including heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen saturation were observed during or after administration. The only adverse event that may be related to cell administration was a mild γ-glutamyltransferase level elevation in one neonate, which spontaneously resolved without any treatment. All patients enrolled in the trial survived, and normal developmental quotients (≥ 85) in all 3 domains of the Kyoto Scale of Psychological Development 2001 were observed in 67% of the patients in this trial. CL2020 administration was demonstrated to be safe and tolerable for neonates with HIE. Considering the small number of patients, a randomized controlled confirmatory study is warranted to verify these preliminary findings and evaluate the efficacy of this therapy.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: The brains of preterm infants exhibit altered functional connectivity (FC) networks, but the potential variation in sleep states and the impact of breathing patterns on FC networks are unclear. This study explores the evolution of resting-state FC from preterm to term, focusing on breathing patterns and distinguishing between active sleep and quiet sleep. METHODS: We recruited 63 preterm infants and 44 healthy-term infants and performed simultaneous electroencephalography and functional near-infrared spectroscopy. FC was calculated using oxy- and deoxyhemoglobin signals across eight channels. First, FC was compared between periodic breathing (PB) and non-PB segments. Then sleep state-dependent FC development was explored. FC was compared between active sleep and quiet sleep segments and between preterm infants at term and term-born infants in each sleep state. Finally, associations between FC at term, clinical characteristics, and neurodevelopmental outcomes in late infancy were assessed in preterm infants. RESULTS: In total, 148 records from preterm infants and 44 from term-born infants were analyzed. PB inflated FC values. After excluding PB segments, FC was found to be elevated during active sleep compared to quiet sleep, particularly in connections involving occipital regions. Preterm infants had significantly higher FC in both sleep states compared to term-born infants. Furthermore, stronger FC in specific connections during active sleep at term was associated with unfavorable neurodevelopment in preterm infants. CONCLUSIONS: Sleep states play a critical role in FC development and preterm infants show observable changes in FC.

BACKGROUND: Antenatal corticosteroids (ACS) are administered to prevent neonatal complications and death in women at risk of imminent preterm birth. Internationally, the optimal interval from ACS to delivery (ACS-to-delivery interval) is within seven days; however, evidence in Asian populations specifically is limited. This study aimed to investigate the association between ACS-to-delivery interval and the incidence of neonatal complications in Japan. METHODS: This retrospective observational study enrolled singleton neonates born preterm at < 32 weeks of gestational age between 2012 and 2020 at two tertiary centers. A total of 625 neonates were divided into the following four groups according to the timing of ACS (measured in days): no ACS (n = 145), partial ACS (n = 85), ACS 1-7 (n = 307), and ACS ≥ 8 (n = 88). The following outcomes were compared between the groups: treated respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), severe intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH), treated patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), necrotizing enterocolitis, sepsis, bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), treated retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), periventricular leukomalacia, and death discharge. RESULTS: The ACS 1-7 group had significantly decreased adjusted odds ratios (ORs) for treated RDS (0.37 [95% confidence interval: 0.23, 0.57]), severe IVH (0.21 [0.07, 0.63]), treated PDA (0.47 [0.29, 0.75]), and treated ROP (0.50 [0.25, 0.99]) compared with the no ACS group. The ACS ≥ 8 group also showed significantly reduced adjusted ORs for RDS (0.37 [0.20, 0.66]) and treated PDA (0.48 [0.25, 0.91]) compared with the no ACS group. However, the adjusted ORs for BPD significantly increased in both the ACS 1-7 (1.86 [1.06, 3.28]) and ACS ≥ 8 groups (2.94 [1.43, 6.05]) compared to the no ACS group. CONCLUSIONS: An ACS-to-delivery interval of 1-7 days achieved the lowest incidence of several complications in preterm neonates born at < 32 weeks of gestational age. Some of the favorable effects of ACS seem to continue even beyond ≥ 8 days from administration. In contrast, ACS might be associated with an increased incidence of BPD, which was most likely to be prominent in neonates delivered ≥ 8 days after receiving ACS. Based on these findings, the duration of the effect of ACS on neonatal complications should be studied further.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to clarify surgical complications associated with open surgery for congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). METHODS: We performed an exploratory data analysis of the clinical characteristics of surgical complications of neonates with CDH who underwent laparotomy or thoracotomy between 2006 and 2021. Data of these patients were obtained from the database of the Japanese CDH Study Group. RESULTS: Among 1,111 neonates with left or right CDH, 852 underwent open surgery (laparotomy or thoracotomy). Of these 852 neonates, 51 had the following surgical complications: organ injury (n = 48; 6% of open surgeries); circulatory failure caused by changes in the organ location (n = 2); and skin burns (n = 1). Injured organs included the spleen (n = 30; 62% of organ injuries), liver (n = 7), lungs (n = 4), intestine (n = 4), adrenal gland (n = 2), and thoracic wall (n = 2). Fourteen of the patients who experienced organ injury required a blood transfusion (2% of open surgeries). The adjusted odds ratio of splenic injury for patients with non-direct closure of the diaphragm was 2.2 (95% confidence interval, 1.1-4.9). CONCLUSION: Of the patients who underwent open surgery for CDH, 2% experienced organ injury that required a blood transfusion. Non-direct closure of the diaphragmatic defect was a risk factor for splenic injury.

AIM: To investigate the relationship between the developmental quotient (DQ) at age 3 years and the need for educational support at school age in extremely preterm infants. METHODS: A total of 176 infants with a gestational age of <28 weeks were analyzed. The total DQ and subscales were evaluated using the Kyoto Scale of Psychological Development (KSPD) test. Neurodevelopment at age 3 years was stratified using total DQ in a conventional (DQ < 70 as developmental delay, DQ 70- <85 as subnormal, DQ ≥85 as normal) and a modified way (subdividing normal into DQ 85- <93 as low-normal and DQ ≥93 as high-normal). The prevalence of future educational support was compared for each stratum. Additionally, subscales were compared between those with and without educational support in each total DQ stratum. RESULTS: In conventional stratification, the prevalence of educational support was 32 (63 %) for developmental delay, 14 (24 %) for subnormal, and 10 (15 %) for normal. In modified stratification, the prevalence was 8 (26 %) for low-normal and 2 (5 %) for high-normal. While there was no significant difference in the odds of educational support between the normal and subnormal, the low-normal had significantly higher odds compared to the high-normal (OR 6.00; 95 % CI, 1.16-30.95, p = 0.03). Among the low-normal stratum, the language-social subscale was significantly lower in those with educational support. CONCLUSION: Setting high thresholds for total DQ and evaluating detailed subscales at age 3 years may be useful for developmental follow-up in extremely preterm infants.

Coccomyxa sp. KJ is a unicellular green microalga that accumulates abundant lipids when cultured under nitrogen-deficient conditions (KJ1) and high nitrogen levels when cultured under nitrogen-sufficient conditions (KJ2). Considering the different characteristics between KJ1 and KJ2, they are expected to have different effects on rumen fermentation. This study aimed to determine the effects of KJ1 and KJ2 on in vitro ruminal fermentation, digestibility, CH4 production, and the ruminal microbiome as corn silage substrate condition. Five treatments were evaluated: substrate only (CON) and CON + 0.5% dry matter (DM) KJ1 (KJ1_L), 1.0% DM KJ1 (KJ1_H), 0.5% DM KJ2 (KJ2_L), and 1.0% DM KJ2 (KJ2_H). DM degradability-adjusted CH4 production was inhibited by 48.4 and 40.8% in KJ2_L and KJ2_H, respectively, compared with CON. The proportion of propionate was higher in the KJ1 treatments than the CON treatment and showed further increases in the KJ2 treatments. The abundances of Megasphaera, Succiniclasticum, Selenomonas, and Ruminobacter, which are related to propionate production, were higher in KJ2_H than in CON. The results suggested that the rumen microbiome was modified by the addition of 0.5-1.0% DM KJ1 and KJ2, resulting in increased propionate and reduced CH4 production. In particular, the KJ2 treatments inhibited ruminal CH4 production more than the KJ1 treatments. These findings provide important information for inhibiting ruminal CH4 emissions, which is essential for increasing animal productivity and sustaining livestock production under future population growth.

OBJECTIVE: Antenatal corticosteroids (ACS) is a well-established treatment for women at risk of preterm birth that improves neonatal outcomes. However, several concerns have been raised regarding the potential long-term adverse effects of ACS on the offspring's developing brain. Here we investigated the association between ACS and subcortical segmental volumes in preterm infants at term-equivalent age. STUDY DESIGN: This retrospective observational study was conducted using the clinical data of preterm singleton infants born between 220/7 and 336/7 gestational weeks at Nagoya University Hospital in 2014-2020. Subcortical volumes of the bilateral thalami, caudate nuclei, putamens, pallidums, hippocampi, amygdalae, and nuclei accumbens were evaluated using an automated segmentation tool, Infant FreeSurfer, and compared between neonates exposed to a single course of ACS (n = 46) and those who were not (n = 13) by multiple linear regression analysis (covariates: postmenstrual age at magnetic resonance imaging, infant sex, and gestational age at birth). We compared each subcortical volume stratified by gestational age at birth (<28 vs. ≥28 gestational weeks). RESULTS: Multivariate analyses revealed significantly smaller volumes in the bilateral amygdalae (left, p < 0.03; right, p < 0.03) and caudate nuclei (left, p < 0.03; right, p = 0.04) in neonates with ACS. Significantly smaller volumes in these regions were observed only in neonates born at 28 weeks of gestation or later. CONCLUSIONS: ACS was associated with smaller volumes of the bilateral amygdalae and caudate nuclei at term-equivalent age. This association was observed exclusively in infants born at 28 weeks of gestation or later.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Vibegron for the treatment of residual overactive bladder (OAB) symptoms after laser vaporization of the prostate (photo-selective vaporization of the prostate, contact laser vaporization of the prostate, and thulium laser vaporization). METHODS: This randomized, open-label, parallel-group, single-center superiority trial with a 12-week observation (jRCTs071190040) enrolled male patients with OAB aged 40 years or older who had undergone laser vaporization of the prostate for not less than 12 weeks and not more than 1 year earlier. Patients were allocated to receive Vibegron 50 mg once daily or follow-up without treatment for 12 weeks. RESULTS: Forty-seven patients were enrolled between January 2020 and March 2023. The median age (interquartile range) was 75.5 (72.5-78.5) years for the Vibegron group and 76.5 (71.0-81.0) years for the control group. The intergroup difference in the mean change (95% confidence interval) in the 24-hour urinary frequency at 12 weeks after randomization was -3.66 (-4.99, -2.33), with a significant decrease for the Vibegron group. The Overactive Bladder Symptom Score, International Prostate Symptom Score, IPSS storage score, and Overactive Bladder Questionnaire score significantly improved for the Vibegron group. Voided volume per micturition also increased for the Vibegron group. CONCLUSIONS: The administration of 50 mg of Vibegron once daily for 12 weeks showed significant improvement compared with follow-up without treatment in bladder storage (OAB) symptoms after laser vaporization of the prostate for symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia.

No effective technique exists for removing adhesive remnants following bracket debonding. We propose that fluorescence imaging using europium ions (Eu3+) offers an effective solution for minimizing iatrogenic enamel damage. This study aimed to assess the impact of different mixing ratios of monomer mixtures on the photoluminescence and flexural properties of a newly developed fluorescent adhesive. Four monomer blends with varying urethane dimethacrylate (UDMA) to triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA) ratios were prepared and polymerized. The blends contained 0.1 wt% of tris(1,3-diphenyl-1,3-propanedionato)(1,10-phenanthroline) Eu(III), [Eu(DBM)3Phen], as the phosphor. Optical measurements and flexural tests were conducted for each resin specimen. The emission spectra exhibited narrow bands corresponding to the 4f-4f transitions of the Eu3+ ions. The photoluminescence properties remained unaffected by the mixing ratio, whereas the mechanical properties tended to improve with higher UDMA content. We conclude that the Eu(DBM)3Phen-containing resin shows promise as a fluorescent orthodontic adhesive that contributes to preserving enamel health.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Anti-IgLON5 disease is an autoimmune neurodegenerative disorder characterized by various phenotypes, notably sleep and movement disorders and tau pathology. Although the disease is known to be associated with the neuronal cell adhesion protein IgLON5, the physiologic function of IgLON5 remains elusive. There are conflicting views on whether autoantibodies cause loss of function, activation of IgLON5, or inflammation-associated neuronal damage, ultimately leading to the disease. We generated IgLON5 knockout (-/-) mice to investigate the functions of IgLON5 and elucidate the pathomechanism of anti-IgLON5 disease. METHODS: IgLON5 knockout (-/-) mice underwent behavioral tests investigating motor function, psychiatric function (notably anxiety and depression), social and exploratory behaviors, spatial learning and memory, and sensory perception. Histologic analysis was conducted to investigate tau aggregation in mice with tauopathy. RESULTS: IgLON5-/- mice had poorer performance in the wire hang and rotarod tests (which are tests for motor function) than wild-type mice. Moreover, IgLON5-/- mice exhibited decreased anxiety-like behavior and/or hyperactivity in behavior tests, including light/dark transition test and open field test. IgLON5-/- mice also exhibited poorer remote memory in the contextual fear conditioning test. However, neither sleeping disabilities assessed by EEG nor tau aggregation was detected in the knockout mice. DISCUSSION: These results suggest that IgLON5 is associated with activity, anxiety, motor ability, and contextual fear memory. Comparing the various phenotypes of anti-IgLON5 disease, anti-IgLON5 disease might partially be associated with loss of function of IgLON5; however, other phenotypes, such as sleep disorders and tau aggregation, can be caused by gain of function of IgLON5 and/or neuronal damage due to inflammation. Further studies are needed to elucidate the role of IgLON5 in the pathogenesis of anti-IgLON5 diseases.

Rumen microbes are crucial in the anaerobic fermentation of plant polysaccharides to produce volatile fatty acids. However, limited information exists about the specific microbial species and strains in the rumen that affect carcass traits, and it is unclear whether there is a relationship between rumen metabolic functions and these traits. This study investigated the relationship between the rumen microbiome and carcass traits in beef cattle using 16S rRNA amplicon and shotgun sequencing. Metagenomic sequencing was used to compare the rumen microbiome between high-carcass weight (HW) and low-carcass weight (LW) cattle, and high-marbling (HM) and low-marbling (LM) cattle. Prokaryotic communities in the rumen of HW vs. LW and HM vs. LM were separated using 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing. Notably, shotgun metagenomic sequencing revealed that HW cattle had more methane-producing bacteria and ciliate protozoa, suggesting higher methane emissions. Additionally, variations were observed in the abundances of certain glycoside hydrolases and polysaccharide lyases involved in the ruminal degradation of plant polysaccharides between HW and LW. From our metagenome dataset, 807 non-redundant metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) of medium to high quality were obtained. Among these, 309 and 113 MAGs were associated with carcass weight and marbling, respectively.

OBJECTIVES: Teriparatide [TPTD; human parathyroid hormone (hPTH1-34)] is an anti-osteoporotic drug with bone anabolic effects. Clinical and preclinical studies have indicated that TPTD has value in oral and maxillofacial bone therapies, including jawbone regeneration, periodontal tissue repair, and the treatment of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw. However, it is unclear whether the craniofacial bones respond to TPTD similarly to the axial and appendicular bones. Recent studies showed that TPTD acts on both osteocytes and osteoblasts. This study aimed to characterize distinct craniofacial bone sites, with a focus on morphometric changes in osteocytic lacunae in ovariectomized rats receiving TPTD. METHODS: Conventional bone histomorphometric analyses of mandibular and parietal bone sections were conducted. High-resolution confocal imaging-based three-dimensional fluorescence morphometric analyses of osteocytic lacunae in distinct mandibular and parietal bone sites were conducted. RESULTS: We observed dynamic changes in the morphometric characteristics of osteocytic lacunae specifically in alveolar and other mandibular bone sites upon TPTD administration. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that osteocytes in mandibular bone (specifically, alveolar bone) have unique functional characteristics of osteocytic perilacunar remodeling.

INTRODUCTION: The effects of hydrocortisone (HDC) administration to extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infants on later development remain unclear. This study examined the association between HDC dosage during neonatal period and neurodevelopmental outcomes in ELBW infants. METHODS: This study was a retrospective cohort study conducted in eight centers in Japan. The subjects of this study were ELBW infants born between April 2015 and March 2017. The association between postnatal total HDC dosage up to 36 weeks postmenstrual age and the developmental quotient (DQ) at 3 years of age was examined. Multiple linear regression evaluated the association, adjusting for weeks of gestation, birth weight, and the presence of bronchopulmonary dysplasia, late-onset circulatory collapse, intracranial hemorrhage, necrotizing enterocolitis, and sepsis. RESULTS: This study included 218 ELBW infants, of whom 144 underwent a developmental test at 3 years of age. Simple linear regression analysis revealed a significant association between total HDC dosage and DQ at 3 years of age (coefficients: -2.65, 95% CI: -3.73, -1.57). Multiple linear regression analysis adjusted for the presence of bronchopulmonary dysplasia and late-onset circulatory collapse also revealed a significant association between total HDC dosage and DQ at 3 years of age (coefficients: -2.66, 95% CI: -3.89, -1.42). CONCLUSION: Higher total HDC dosage up to 36 weeks postmenstrual age in ELBW infants was associated with impaired neurodevelopmental outcomes. Although HDC is often needed in the treatment of ELBW infants, clinicians should be aware that an increased dose of HDC may be associated with impaired neurodevelopmental outcomes.

PURPOSE: Infants born to mothers with chorioamnionitis (CAM) are at increased risk of developing adverse neurodevelopmental disorders in later life. However, clinical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies examining brain injuries and neuroanatomical alterations attributed to CAM have yielded inconsistent results. We aimed to determine whether exposure to histological CAM in utero leads to brain injuries and alterations in the neuroanatomy of preterm infants using 3.0- Tesla MRI at term-equivalent age. METHODS: A total of 58 preterm infants born before 34 weeks of gestation at Nagoya University Hospital between 2010 and 2018 were eligible for this study (CAM group, n = 21; non-CAM group, n = 37). Brain injuries and abnormalities were assessed using the Kidokoro Global Brain Abnormality Scoring system. Gray matter, white matter, and subcortical gray matter (thalamus, caudate nucleus, putamen, pallidum, hippocampus, amygdala, and nucleus accumbens) volumes were evaluated using segmentation tools (SPM12 and Infant FreeSurfer). RESULTS: The Kidokoro scores for each category and severity in the CAM group were comparable to those observed in the non-CAM group. White matter volume was significantly smaller in the CAM group after adjusting for covariates (postmenstrual age at MRI, infant sex, and gestational age) (p = 0.007), whereas gray matter volume was not significantly different. Multiple linear regression analyses revealed significantly smaller volumes in the bilateral pallidums (right, p = 0.045; left, p = 0.038) and nucleus accumbens (right, p = 0.030; left, p = 0.004) after adjusting for covariates. CONCLUSIONS: Preterm infants born to mothers with histological CAM showed smaller volumes in white matter, pallidum, and nucleus accumbens at term-equivalent age.

Viruses have a potential to modify the ruminal digestion via infection and cell lysis of prokaryotes, suggesting that viruses are related to animal performance and methane production. This study aimed to elucidate the genome-based diversity of rumen viral communities and the differences in virus structure between individuals and cattle breeds and to understand how viruses influence on the rumen. To these ends, a metagenomic sequencing of virus-like particles in the rumen of 22 Japanese cattle, including Japanese Black (JB, n = 8), Japanese Shorthorn (n = 2), and Japanese Black sires × Holstein dams crossbred steers (F1, n = 12) was conducted. Additionally, the rumen viromes of six JB and six F1 that were fed identical diets and kept in a single barn were compared. A total of 8,232 non-redundant viral genomes (≥5-kb length and ≥50% completeness), including 982 complete genomes, were constructed, and rumen virome exhibited lysogenic signatures. Furthermore, putative hosts of 1,223 viral genomes were predicted using tRNA and clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeat (CRISPR)-spacer matching. The genomes included 1 and 10 putative novel complete genomes associated with Fibrobacter and Ruminococcus, respectively, which are the main rumen cellulose-degrading bacteria. Additionally, the hosts of 22 viral genomes, including 2 complete genomes, were predicted as methanogens, such as Methanobrevibacter and Methanomethylophilus. Most rumen viruses were highly rumen and individual specific and related to rumen-specific prokaryotes. Furthermore, the rumen viral community structure was significantly different between JB and F1 steers, indicating that cattle breed is one of the factors influencing the rumen virome composition.IMPORTANCEHere, we investigated the individual and breed differences of the rumen viral community in Japanese cattle. In the process, we reconstructed putative novel complete viral genomes related to rumen fiber-degrading bacteria and methanogen. The finding strongly suggests that rumen viruses contribute to cellulose and hemicellulose digestion and methanogenesis. Notably, this study also found that rumen viruses are highly rumen and individual specific, suggesting that rumen viruses may not be transmitted through environmental exposure. More importantly, we revealed differences of viral communities between JB and F1 cattle, indicating that cattle breed is a factor that influences the establishment of rumen virome. These results suggest the possibility of rumen virus transmission from mother to offspring and its potential to influence beef production traits. These rumen viral genomes and findings provide new insights into the characterizations of the rumen viruses.
