Transdermal drug delivery systems are highly appealing as a convenient drug delivery manner applicable to a wide variety of drugs. While most delivery relies on only passive diffusion and suffers low transdermal efficiencies. Ultrasound motivation promotes drug transdermal penetration but still calls for improvement, because only a thin proportion of the ultrasound energy is applied on the drug delivery patch and most ultrasound energy is wasted in deeper portions of biotissues. In this work, we develop a transdermal patch for enhanced drug delivery. The combination of microsized air pockets and the piezoelectric soft structure enable the conversion of an intended proportion of ultrasound energy into electric energy. The intensified drug flow and synergistic ultrasound pressure and electric field function simultaneously to enhance drug transdermal delivery. The delivery efficacy is related to the power of the ultrasound motivation, the size of the microscopic air pockets, and the chemical structure of the drug molecules. The temperature of the patch within the delivery process remains in the safe range, and the mild temperature elevation causes color changes of the thermochromic patch, used to indicate effective ultrasound-patch matching. A model delivery patch for pain release is constructed, and animal experiments indicate that the drug blood concentrations are 100% higher than the delivery using only ultrasound and even more remarkably enhanced when compared to only electric-field-motivated delivery or static delivery without external motivations.

Purpose: Compared with traditional photothermal therapy (PTT, >50°C), mild PTT (≤45°C) is a promising strategy for tumor therapy with fewer adverse effects. Unfortunately, its anti-tumor efficacy is hampered by thermoresistance induced by overexpression of heat shock proteins (HSPs). In our previous study, we found bufalin (BU) is a glycolysis inhibitor that depletes HSPs, which is expected to overcome thermotolerance of tumor cells. In this study, BU-loaded multifunctional nanoparticles (NPs) were developed for enhancing the mild PTT of colorectal cancer (CRC). Methods: Fe3O4 NPs coated with the polydopamine (PDA) shell modified with polyethylene glycol (PEG) and cyclic arginine-glycyl-aspartic peptide (cRGD) for loading BU (Fe3O4@PDA-PEG-cRGD/BU NPs) were developed. The thermal variations in Fe3O4@PDA-PEG-cRGD/BU NPs solution under different conditions were measured. Glycolysis inhibition was evaluated by measuring the glucose uptake, extracellular lactate, and intracellular adenosine triphosphate (ATP) levels. The cellular cytotoxicity of Fe3O4@PDA-PEG-cRGD/BU NPs was analyzed using a cell counting kit-8 assay, Calcein-AM/PI double staining, and flow cytometry in HCT116 cells. The magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) performance and anti-tumor therapeutic efficacy of Fe3O4@PDA-PEG-cRGD/BU NPs were evaluated in HCT116-tumor bearing mice. Results: Fe3O4@PDA-PEG-cRGD/BU NPs had an average diameter of 260.4±3.5 nm, the zeta potential of -23.8±1.6 mV, the drug loading rate of 1.1%, which had good thermal stability, photothermal conversion efficiencies and MRI performance. In addition, the released BU not only killed tumor cells but also interfered with glycolysis by targeting the steroid receptor coactivator 3 (SRC-3)/HIF-1α pathway, preventing intracellular ATP synthesis, and combating HSP-dependent tumor thermoresistance, ultimately strengthening the thermal sensitivity toward mild PTT both in vitro and in vivo. Conclusion: This study provides a highly effective strategy for enhancing the therapeutic effects of mild PTT toward tumors.

Organs-on-chips are microphysiological systems that allow to replicate the key functions of human organs and accelerate the innovation in life sciences including disease modeling, drug development, and precision medicine. However, due to the lack of standards in their definition, structural design, cell source, model construction, and functional validation, a wide range of translational application of organs-on-chips remains a challenging. "Organs-on-chips: Intestine" is the first group standard on human intestine-on-a-chip in China, jointly agreed and released by the experts from the Chinese Society of Biotechnology on 29th April 2024. This standard specifies the scope, terminology, definitions, technical requirements, detection methods, and quality control in building the human intestinal model on a chip. The publication of this group standard will guide the institutional establishment, acceptance and execution of proper practical protocols and accelerate the international standardization of intestine-on-a-chip for translational applications.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether high concentration iodinated contrast media (CM), compared with low concentration CM, could reduce pain and discomfort levels in patients who had level II and III venous conditions. METHODS: This prospective, single-center study enrolled patients who had level II and III venous conditions and underwent abdominal contrast-enhanced CT scan between July 2021 and February 2022. The venous condition to establish peripheral venous access for CM injection was graded using the Intravenous Access Scoring system, of which level II and III indicated poor venous condition and difficult venous access. Patients received iomeprol 400 in high concentration group and ioversol 320 in low group at an identical iodine delivery rate of 1.12 gI/s. The primary outcomes were pain and comfort levels. The secondary outcomes included adverse events and image quality. Patients rated pain intensity via Numerical Rating Scale and comfort level via Visual Analogue Scale with higher scores indicating higher levels of pain and discomfort. Quantitative and qualitative image assessment were compared between two groups. Continuous variables were compared using Student's t test or Mann-Whitney U test. Categorical variables were compared using χ2 test, χ2 test for trend or Fisher's exact test. RESULTS: A total of 206 patients (mean age, 60.13 ± 12.14 years; 81 males) were included with 99 in the high concentration group and 107 in the low concentration group. The high group had significantly lower pain scores (median 1 [IQR: 0-2] vs 2 (IQR 2-4), p < 0.001) and comfort scores (1 [IQR: 0-3] vs 3 [IQR: 2-5], p < 0.001) than the low group. Incidence of CM extravasation did not significantly differ (1.0 % vs 4.5 %, p = 0.214). No hypersensitivity reaction was observed. Qualitative assessment showed higher clarity scores of intrahepatic hepatic artery and portal vein in the high group. Quantitative assessment results were comparable between two groups. CONCLUSION: High concentration iodinated CM could lower pain intensity and improve comfort levels without comprising image quality of CT scan. High concentration CM is a preferable choice in patients with poor venous conditions during contrast-enhanced CT scan.

INTRODUCTION: To explore the mechanisms of labor by investigating the autophagy of placental and fetal membranes tissue in normal pregnant women. METHODS: Placenta and fetal membranes were collected from women with singleton pregnancies without any medical complications and from women who delivered vaginally (labor-initiated group; L group) or by caesarean section (labor-noninitiated group; NL group). Autophagosomes were observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Immunofluorescence and western blotting (WB) were used to detect protein levels of the autophagy markers LC3A and LC3B. TEM, immunohistochemistry (IHC), and WB were used to compare autophagy in different parts of the placenta and fetal membranes in the L and NL groups. The expression of LC3B/LC3A, ROCK1, and ROCK2 in the placenta of nonpregnant and pregnant rats was detected by WB and IHC. RESULTS: TEM and IHC results showed an increase in the number of autophagosomes and autophagic lysosomes in the L group, and WB results indicated an increase in the LC3B/A ratio between the placenta and fetal membranes in the L group. Autophagy was significantly increased on the maternal side of the placenta in the L group, and the level of autophagy became higher near rupture in the fetal membranes and near the point where the umbilical cord joins the placenta in the L group. The LC3B/A ratio increased and ROCK1 and ROCK2 levels decreased in postnatal rats. DISCUSSION: Autophagy can occur in the placenta and fetal membranes and its activity is higher at the onset of labor, suggesting a role in labor.

Plants are affected by many environmental factors during their various stages of growth, among which salt stress is a key factor. WRKY transcription factors play important roles in the response to stress in plants. In this study, SmWRKY40 from eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) was found to belong to the subfamily of WRKY transcription factor group II, closely related to the evolution of wild tomato ScWRKY40 (Solanum chilense). The expression of SmWRKY40 could be induced by several abiotic stresses (drought, salt, and high temperature) and ABA to different degrees, with salt stress being the most significant. In Arabidopsis thaliana, the seed germination rate of SmWRKY40 overexpression seedlings was significantly higher than those of the wild type under high concentrations of NaCl and ABA, and root elongation of overexpression lines was also longer than wild type under NaCl treatments. SmWRKY40 overexpression lines were found to enhance Arabidopsis tolerance to salt with lower ROS, MDA, higher soluble protein, proline accumulation, and more active antioxidant enzymes. The expression level of genes related to stress and ABA signaling displayed significant differences in SmWRKY40 overexpression line than that of WT. These results indicate that SmWRKY40 regulates ABA and salt stress responses in Arabidopsis.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Acori graminei Rhizoma is a commonly used traditional Chinese medicine for treating TD, with its main component being calamus volatile oil. Volatile Oil from Acori graminei Rhizoma (VOA)can protect nerve cells and alleviate learning and memory disorders. However, the mechanism of anti-tic of VOA is still unclear. AIM OF THE STUDY: We aimed to explore the effects of Volatile Oil from Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma (VOA) on striatal dopaminergic and glutamatergic systems and synaptic plasticity of rats with Tic Disorder (TD), as well as its pharmaceutical mechanism against TD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study involved 48 (three-week-old) Sprague Dawley (SD) rats, which were randomly divided into two primary groups: Control (8) and TD (40). Rats in the TD group were injected intraperitoneally with 3,3-iminodipropionitrile (IDPN) to construct the TD rat model. They were divided into five subgroups: Model, Tiapride, VOA-high, VOA-medium, and VOA-low (N = 8). After modeling, VOA was administrated to rats in the VOA groups through gavage (once/day for four consecutive weeks), while rats in the blank control and model groups received normal saline of the same volume. The animals' behavioral changes were reflected using the stereotypic and motor behavior scores. After interferences, patterns of striatal neurons and the density of dendritic spines were investigated using H&E and Golgi staining, and the ultrastructure of striatal synapses was examined using Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). Furthermore, Ca2+ content was determined using the Ca2+ detector, and Dopamine (DA) and Glutamate (GLU) contents in serum and striatum were detected through ELISA. Finally, DRD1, DRD2, AMPAR1, NMPAR1, DAT, VMAT2, CAMKⅡ, and CREB expression in the striatum was detected using Quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR), Western Blotting (WB) and Immunohistochemical (IHC) methods. RESULTS: Compared to rats in the blank control and model groups, rats in the VOA groups showed lower stereotypic behavior scores. Furthermore, rats in the VOA groups exhibited relieved, neuron damage and increased quantities of neuronal dendrites and dendritic spines Additionally, based on TEM images show that, the VOA groups showed a clear synaptic structure and increased amounts of postsynaptic dense substances and synaptic vesicles. The VOA groups also exhibited reduced Ca2+ contents, and upregulation of DRD1, DRD2, DAT, AMPAR1, and NMPAR1 and downregulation of VMAT-2, CAMKⅡ, and CREB in the striatum. CONCLUSIONS: In summary, VOA could influence synaptic plasticity by tuning the dopaminergic and glutamatergic systems, thus relieving TD.

With the continuous increasing threat of drug-resistant bacteria induced cutaneous wound infections, there is a growing demand for novel effective antibiotics-alternative antibacterial strategies for clinical anti-infective therapy. Here, we report the fabrication and antibacterial efficacy of Ag2S@H-CeO2 photonic nanocomposites with rough surface through in-situ growth of Ag2S nanoparticles on CeO2 hollow spheres. With excellent photothermal property and peroxidase-like activity, as well as increased bacterial adhesion, the photonic nanocomposites demonstrated a broad-spectrum synergistic antibacterial effect against Gram-positive, Gram-positive bacteria and fungi as well biofilm in vitro. Significantly, the nanocomposites can effectively eradicate drug-resistant bacteria such as Gram-positive methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Gram-negative extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli (ESBL E. coli). Notably, in vivo assessments validated its synergistic therapeutic potential in the treatment of MRSA-infected cutaneous wounds, all while maintaining excellent biosafety and biocompatibility. Our study offers a competitive and promising strategy for the development of a multifunctional synergistic antibacterial platform poised to effectively treat drug-resistant bacteria-infected cutaneous wounds.

BACKGROUND: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a highly prevalent, complex, heterogeneous, polygenic endocrine disorder characterized by metabolic and reproductive dysfunction that affects 8-13% of women of reproductive age worldwide. The pathogenesis of PCOS has not been fully clarified and includes genetics, obesity, and insulin resistance (IR). Oxidative stress (OS) of PCOS is independent of obesity. It can induce IR through post-insulin receptor defects, impair glucose uptake in muscle and adipose tissue, and exacerbate IR by reducing insulin secretion from pancreatic ß-cells. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of Calorie Restricted Diet (CRD), High Protein Diet (HPD), and High Protein and High Dietary Fiber Diet (HPD+HDF) on body composition, insulin resistance, and oxidative stress in overweight/obese PCOS patients. METHODS: A total of 90 overweight/obese patients with PCOS were selected to receive an 8- week medical nutrition weight loss intervention at our First Hospital of Peking University, and we randomly divided them into the CRD group (group A), the HPD group (group B), and the HPD+HDF group (group C), with 30 patients in each group. We measured their body composition, HOMA-IR index, and oxidative stress indicators. The t-test, Mann-Whitney U test, analysis of variance (ANOVA), and Kruskal-Wallis H test were used to compare the efficacy of the three methods. RESULTS: After eight weeks, the body weights of the three groups decreased by 6.32%, 5.70% and 7.24%, respectively, and the Visceral Fat Area (VFA) values decreased by 6.8 cm2, 13.4 cm2 and 23.45 cm2, respectively, especially in group C (p >0.05). The lean body mass (LBM), also known as the Fat-Free Mass (FFM) values of group B and group C after weight loss, were higher than that of group A (p >0.05). After weight loss, the homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) index and malondialdehyde (MDA) were decreased. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) was increased in all three groups (p >0.05), and the changes in SOD and MDA in group B and group C were more significant (p >0.05). HOMA-IR index positively correlated with body mass index (BMI) (r=0.195; p >0.05); MDA positively correlated with percent of body fat (PBF) (r=0.186; p >0.05) and HOMA-IR index (r=0.422; p >0.01); SOD positively correlated with LMI/FFMI (r=0.195; p >0.05), negatively correlated with HOMA-IR index (r=-0.433; p >0.01). CONCLUSION: All three diets were effective in reducing the body weight of overweight/obese patients with PCOS by more than 5% within 8 weeks and could improve both insulin resistance and oxidative stress damage. Compared with CRD, HPD and HPD+HDF diets could better retain lean body mass and significantly improve oxidative stress damage. CLINICAL TRIAL NUMBER: ChiCTR2100054961.

Detection of the moisture content (MC) and freshness for loquats is crucial for achieving optimal taste and economic efficiency. Traditional methods for evaluating the MC and freshness of loquats have disadvantages such as destructive sampling and time-consuming. To investigate the feasibility of rapid and non-destructive detection of the MC and freshness for loquats, optical fiber spectroscopy in the range of 200-1000 nm was used in this study. The full spectra were pre-processed using standard normal variate method, and then, the effective wavelengths were selected using competitive adaptive weighting sampling (CARS) and random frog algorithms. Based on the selected effective wavelengths, prediction models for MC were developed using partial least squares regression (PLSR), multiple linear regression, extreme learning machine, and back-propagation neural network. Furthermore, freshness level discrimination models were established using simplified k nearest neighbor, support vector machine (SVM), and partial least squares discriminant analysis. Regarding the prediction models, the CARS-PLSR model performed relatively better than the other models for predicting the MC, with R 2 P and RPD values of 0.84 and 2.51, respectively. Additionally, the CARS-SVM model obtained superior discrimination performance, with 100% accuracy for both calibration and prediction sets. The results demonstrated that optical fiber spectroscopy technology is an effective tool to fast detect the MC and freshness for loquats.

In recent years, research on microplastics has mostly focused on thermoplastic materials, and there is a lack of research on the pollution status and environmental behavior of tire microplastics, a type of rubber elastomers. In order to investigate the aging and small-sized particles release characteristics of tire microplastics in various environmental media, the aging process of two different tire microplastics, one for cars and the other for electric bicycles, was simulated in dry and aquatic environments under laboratory conditions. The results showed that the tire microplastics would be aged after 30 d of UV illumination, which was manifested by the roughness of the surface and the appearance of cracks and flaking. The Fourier infrared spectra showed that the carbonyl index of the surface also increased. In addition, tire microplastics released a large number of small sub-micron particles under the influence of UV illumination and hydrodynamic action, and the number of particles released from car tire microplastics in aquatic environments reached 694.8 million particles per milliliter of solution at 30 d of the UV light condition, among which 694.6 million particles with a particle size of less than 1 µm were released, which was approximately 100 times of that in the dark condition. The study showed that tire microplastics in aquatic environments were more susceptible to aging and released more small particles under light conditions and that car tire microplastics released more small particles than electric bicycle tire microplastics, posing ecological and environmental risks.

Transparent passive cooling materials can cool targets environmentally without interfering with light transmission or visual information reception. They play a prominent role in solar cells and flexible display cooling. However, achieving potent transparent cooling remains challenging, because light transmission is accompanied by thermal energy. Here we propose to realize effective passive cooling in transparent materials via a microscale phase separation hydrogel film. The poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-acrylamide) hydrogel presents light transmittance of >96% and infrared emissivity as high as 95%. The microphase-separated structure affords a higher enthalpy of evaporation. The film is highly adhesive. In field applications, it reduces temperatures by 9.14 °C compared to those with uncovered photovoltaic panels and 7.68 °C compared to those for bare flexible light-emitting diode screens. Simulations indicate that energy savings of 32.76-51.65 MJ m-2 year-1 can be achieved in typical tropical monsoon climates and temperate continental climates. RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: ChangPu YuJin Tang (CPYJT) is a Chinese herbal formula that has been shown to be an effective therapeutic strategy for pediatric patients with Tourette Syndrome (TS). Using an integrated strategy of network pharmacology and animal model, the aim of this study was to investigate the mechanism of CPYJT in the treatment of TS. METHODS: Compound libraries of CPYJT were established using databases, such as the Traditional Chinese Medicine Systems Pharmacology Database and Analysis Platform (TCMSP). The TCMSP database and Swiss Target Prediction database were used to predict the targets. The above results were constructed into a CPYJT-Drug-Component-Target network. Moreover, TS targets were predicted using GeneCards and other databases. The targets corresponding to the potential ingredients in CPYJT and the targets corresponding to TS were taken as the intersections to construct the CPYJT-TS network. The target network was analysed by PPI using the string database. GO and KEGG enrichment analyses were performed on the target network. The whole process was performed using Cytoscape 3.7.2 to make visual network diagrams of the results. CPYJT was characterised by Ultra-Performance Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry (UHPLC-MS). Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) was used to observe the structural changes of CPYJT on the neuronal cells of the IDPN model rats. RT-PCR and Western Blot were used to analyse the changes in the mRNA and protein expression levels of BDNF, TrkB, PI3K, and AKT in the cortex, striatum, and thalamus brain regions after CPYJT administration in IDPN model rats. RESULTS: Network pharmacology and UHPLC-MS studies revealed that CPYJT acted on the TS through multiple neurotransmitters and the BDNF/TrkB and PI3K/AKT signalling pathways. CPYJT ameliorated neurocellular structural damage in the cortex, striatum, and thalamus of TS model rats. Additionally, CPYJT up-regulated the levels of BDNF, TrkB, PI3k, and AKT in the cortex, striatum, and thalamus of TS model rats. CONCLUSION: It was found that CPYJT protected neuronal cells from structural damage in multiple brain regions and affected the expression levels of BDNF, TrkB, PI3K, and Akt in the cortex, striatum, and thalamus during TS treatment.

Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) causes millions of premature deaths each year worldwide. Oxidative potential (OP) has been proposed as a better metric for aerosol health effects than PM2.5 mass concentration alone. In this study, we report for the first time online measurements of PM2.5 OP in wintertime Beijing and surroundings based on a dithiothreitol (DTT) assay. These measurements were combined with co-located PM chemical composition measurements to identify the main source categories of aerosol OP. In addition, we highlight the influence of two distinct pollution events on aerosol OP (spring festival celebrations including fireworks and a severe regional dust storm). Source apportionment coupled with multilinear regression revealed that primary PM and oxygenated organic aerosol (OOA) were both important sources of OP, accounting for 41 ± 12 % and 39 ± 10 % of the OPvDTT (OP normalized by the sampled air volume), respectively. The small remainder was attributed to fireworks and dust, mainly resulting from the two distinct pollution events. During the 3.5-day spring festival period, OPvDTT spiked to 4.9 nmol min-1 m-3 with slightly more contribution from OOA (42 ± 11 %) and less from primary PM (31 ± 15 %). During the dust storm, hourly-averaged PM2.5 peaked at a very high value of 548 µg m-3 due to the dominant presence of dust-laden particles (88 % of total PM2.5). In contrast, only mildly elevated OPvDTT values (up to 1.5 nmol min-1 m-3) were observed during this dust event. This observation indicates that variations in OPvDTT cannot be fully explained using PM2.5 alone; one must also consider the chemical composition of PM2.5 when studying aerosol health effects. Our study highlights the need for continued pollution control strategies to reduce primary PM emissions, and more in-depth investigations into the source origins of OOA, to minimize the health risks associated with PM exposure in Beijing.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the effect of recombinant human thrombopoietin (rhTPO) on platelet (PLT) reconstitution after autologous peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (APBSCT) in patients with multiple myeloma (MM). METHODS: The clinical data of 147 MM patients who were diagnosed in the First Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University and received APBSCT as the first-line therapy were retrospectively analyzed. According to whether rhTPO was used during APBSCT, the patients were divided into rhTPO group (80 cases) and control group (67 cases). The time of PLT engraftment, blood product infusion requirements, the proportion of patients with PLT recovery to≥50×109/L and≥100×109/L at +14 days and +100 days after transplantation, and adverse reactions including the incidence of bleeding were compared between the two groups. RESULTS: There were no significant differences between the two groups in sex, age, M protein type, PLT count at the initial diagnosis, median duration of induction therapy before APBSCT, and number of CD34+ cells reinfused (all P >0.05). The median time of PLT engraftment in the rhTPO group was 10 (6-14) days, which was shorter than 11 (8-23) days in the control group (P < 0.001). The median PLT transfusion requirement in the rhTPO group during APBSCT was 15(0-50)U, which was less than 20 (0-80)U in the control group (P =0.001). At +14 days after transplantation, the proportions of patients with PLT≥50×109/L in the rhTPO group and the control group were 66.3% and 52.2%, while the proportions of patients with PLT≥100×109/L were 23.8% and 11.9%, respectively, with no significant differences (all P >0.05). At +100 days after transplantation, the proportion of patients with PLT≥50×109/L in rhTPO group and control group was 96.3% and 89.6%, respectively (P >0.05), but the proportion of patients with PLT≥100×109/L in rhTPO group was higher than that in control group (75.0% vs 55.2%, P =0.012). There was no difference in the overall incidence of bleeding events in different locations during period of low PLT level of patients between the two groups. In rhTPO group, the rhTPO administration was well tolerated, and the incidences of abnormal liver and kidney function and infection were similar to those in the control group. CONCLUSION: When MM patients undergo first-line APBSCT, subcutaneous injection of rhTPO can shorten the time of platelet engraftment, reduce the transfusion volume of blood products, and be well tolerated, moreover, more patients have achieve a high level of PLT recovery after transplantation, which is very important for ensuring the safety of APBSCT and maintenance therapy.

Soluble solid content (SSC), firmness, and color (L*, a*, and b*) are important physicochemical indices for assessing the quality and maturity of kiwifruits. Therefore, this research aimed to realize the nondestructive detection and visualization map for the physicochemical indices of kiwifruits at different maturity stages by hyperspectral imaging coupled with the chemometrics. To further improve the detection accuracy and working efficiency of the models, competitive adaptive reweighted sampling (CARS) and successive projection algorithm were employed to choose feature wavelengths for predicting the physicochemical indices of kiwifruits. Multiple linear regression (MLR) was designed to develop simplified detection models based on feature wavelengths for determining the physicochemical indices of kiwifruits. The results showed that 32, 18, 26, 29, and 32 feature wavelengths were extracted from 256 full wavelengths to predict the SSC, firmness, L*, a*, and b*, respectively, with the CARS algorithm. Not only was the working efficiency of the CARS-MLR model improved, but the prediction accuracy of the CARS-MLR model for determining the physicochemical indices was also at its relative best. The residual predictive deviations of the CARS-MLR model for determining the SSC, firmness, L*, a*, and b* were 3.09, 2.90, 2.32, 2.74, and 2.91, respectively, which were all above 2.3. Compared with the model based on the full spectra, the CARS-MLR model could be used to predict the physicochemical indices of kiwifruits. Finally, the visualization map for the physicochemical indices of kiwifruits at different maturity stages was generated by calculating the spectral response of each pixel on the kiwifruit samples with the CARS-MLR model. This made the detection for the physicochemical indices of kiwifruits more intuitive. This study demonstrates that hyperspectral imaging coupled with the chemometrics is promising for the nondestructive detection and visualization map for the physicochemical indices of kiwifruits, and also provides a novel theoretical basis for the nondestructive detection of kiwifruit quality.

Objectives: Incident stroke was associated with cognitive dysfunction after stroke and even before stroke. However, cognitive trends prior to myocardial infarction (MI) and the timeline of cognitive decline in a few years following incident MI remain unclear, especially among the Chinese population. We aimed to evaluate whether MI was associated with cognitive change both before and after MI in China. Methods: This cohort study included 11,287 participants without baseline heart problems or stroke from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. The exposure was self-reported MI. The outcomes were scores of cognitive functions in five domains, which reflected abilities of episodic memory, visuospatial abilities, orientation, attention and calculation, and global cognition as a summary measure. A Linear mixed model was constructed to explore cognitive function before and after incident MI among the MI participants and the cognitive trends of participants free of MI. Results: During the 7-year follow-up, 421 individuals [3.7% of 11,287, mean (SD) age, 60.0 (9.0) years; 59.1% female] experienced MI events. The cognitive scores of participants of both the MI group and the control group without MI declined gradually as time went by. The annual decline rate of the MI group before incident MI was similar to that of the control group during the whole follow-up period. Incident MI was not associated with acute cognitive decline in all five cognitive domains. Moreover, MI did not accelerate the cognitive decline rate after MI compared with the pre-MI cognitive trends. The decline rate of cognitive function after MI was similar to the rate before MI. Conclusions: Different from stroke, participants who had an MI did not show steeper cognitive decline before MI. MI was not associated with acute cognitive decline and accelerated decline in several years after MI. Future studies are needed to learn the mechanisms behind the different patterns of cognitive decline between MI and stroke.
