RESUMEN

A nematic phase breaks the point-group symmetry of the crystal lattice and is known to emerge in correlated materials. Here we report the observation of an intra-unit-cell nematic order and associated Fermi surface deformation in the kagome metal ScV6Sn6. Using scanning tunnelling microscopy and scanning tunnelling spectroscopy, we reveal a stripe-like nematic order breaking the crystal rotational symmetry within the kagome lattice itself. Moreover, we identify a set of Van Hove singularities adhering to the kagome-layer electrons, which appear along one direction of the Brillouin zone and are annihilated along other high-symmetry directions, revealing rotational symmetry breaking. Via detailed spectroscopic maps, we further observe an elliptical deformation of the Fermi surface, which provides direct evidence for an electronically mediated nematic order. Our work not only bridges the gap between electronic nematicity and kagome physics but also sheds light on the potential mechanism for realizing symmetry-broken phases in correlated electron systems.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Crocin has a good prospect in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD), but the mechanisms underlying its neuroprotective effects remain elusive. This study aimed to investigate the neuroprotective effects of Crocin and its underlying mechanisms in AD. METHODS: AD mice were set up by injecting Aß25-35 solution into the hippocampus. Then, the AD mice were injected intraperitoneally with 40 mg/kg/day of Crocin for 14 days. Following the completion of Crocin treatment, an open-field test, Y-maze test and Morris water maze test were conducted to evaluate the impact of Crocin on spatial learning and memory deficiency in mice. The effects of Crocin on hippocampal neuron injury, proinflammatory cytokine expressions (IL-1ß, IL-6, and TNF-α), and PI3K/AKT signaling-related protein expressions were measured using hematoxylin and eosin staining, Western blot, and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) experiments, respectively. RESULTS: Crocin attenuated Aß25-35-induced spatial learning and memory deficiency and hippocampal neuron injury. Furthermore, the Western blot and qRT-PCR results showed that Crocin effectively suppressed inflammation and activated the PI3K/AKT pathway in Aß25-35-induced mice. CONCLUSION: Crocin restrained neuroinflammation via the activation of the PI3K/AKT pathway, thereby ameliorating the cognitive dysfunction of AD mice.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a common degenerative brain disorder with limited therapeutic options. Curcumin (Cur) exhibits neuroprotective function in many diseases. We aimed to explore the role and mechanism of Cur in AD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Firstly, we established AD mice by injecting amyloid-ß1-42 (Aß1-42) solution into the hippocampus. Then, the AD mice received 150 mg/kg/d Cur for 10 consecutive days. The Morris water maze test was conducted to evaluate the cognitive function of the mice by hidden platform training and probe trials. To assess the spatial memory of the mice, spontaneous alternation behavior, the number of crossing the novel arm and the time spent in the novel arm during the Y-maze test was recorded. Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick end labeling (TUNAL) assay were performed to assess the pathological damage and apoptosis of brain tissues. The number of damaged neurons was inspected by Nissl staining. Immunohistochemical staining was then performed to detect Aß1-42 deposition. The levels of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-a), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß) in serum and hippocampus, the contents of super oxide dismutase (SOD) and malondialdehyde (MDA) in brain tissues were assessed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Additionally, B-cell lymphoma-2 (Bcl-2), Bcl-2 associated X protein (Bax), RelA (p65) protein expressions and Adenosine 5'-monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) phosphorylation were tested using Western blot. RESULTS: Cur not only improved cognitive function and spatial memory, but also alleviated the pathological damage and apoptosis of brain tissues for AD mice. Meanwhile, upon Cur treatment, the number of damaged neurons in AD mice was decreased, the level of Aß1-42 in AD mice was significantly decreased. Furthermore, the AD mice treated with Cur exhibited lower TNF-a, IL-6, IL-1ß and MDA levels and a higher SOD content. Besides, Cur also downregulated p65 expression and upregulated AMPK phosphorylation. CONCLUSION: Cur may improve AD via suppressing the inflammatory response, oxidative stress and activating the AMPK pathway, suggesting that Cur may be a potential drug for AD.

RESUMEN

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia, and ginsenoside Rg2 (Rg2) is proven to inhibit AD's progression. This study investigates the potential benefits of Rg2 treatment on 3xTg-AD mice. Following 6 weeks of gavage treatment, Rg2-treated 3xTg-AD mice exhibited improved spatial recognition memory behaviors, regional cerebral blood flow, and histopathological injury of the hippocampus, which were observed through a Y-maze test, laser Doppler flowmetry, and hematoxylin-eosin staining. Additionally, Rg2 treatment caused a decrease in the levels of amyloid beta 25-35, TNF-α, IL-1ß, and IL-6, as measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, as well as a reduction in mRNA levels of IL-1ß and IL-6 in 3xTg-AD mouse brains using quantitative real-time PCR. In particular, NeuN and CD31 levels were inhibited and GFAP level was elevated in 3xTg-AD mice that were observed through immunofluorescence, and these levels were all antagonized by Rg2, suggesting the effects of Rg2 on neurovascular damage, astrocyte activation, and neuronal loss. Furthermore, Western blot and qRT-PCR assays showed that Rg2 blocked the expression of ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 in 3xTg-AD mice. By Western blot, the ratios of p-ERK/ERK and p-MAPK/MAPK in 3xTg-AD mice were upregulated by Rg2 treatment, suggesting the neuroprotective effects of Rg2 may be related to the MAPK-ERK pathway. In summary, this study demonstrated the potential of Rg2 to improve AD and provided a scientific basis for research on the biological mechanism of AD and the development of Rg2.

RESUMEN

Uneven lighting conditions often occur during real-life photography, such as images taken at night that may have both low-light dark areas and high-light overexposed areas. Traditional algorithms for enhancing low-light areas also increase the brightness of overexposed areas, affecting the overall visual effect of the image. Therefore, it is important to achieve differentiated enhancement of low-light and high-light areas. In this paper, we propose a network called correcting uneven illumination network (CUI-Net) with sparse attention transformer and convolutional neural network (CNN) to better extract low-light features by constraining high-light features. Specifically, CUI-Net consists of two main modules: a low-light enhancement module and an auxiliary module. The enhancement module is a hybrid network that combines the advantages of CNN and Transformer network, which can alleviate uneven lighting problems and enhance local details better. The auxiliary module is used to converge the enhancement results of multiple enhancement modules during the training phase, so that only one enhancement module is needed during the testing phase to speed up inference. Furthermore, zero-shot learning is used in this paper to adapt to complex uneven lighting environments without requiring paired or unpaired training data. Finally, to validate the effectiveness of the algorithm, we tested it on multiple datasets of different types, and the algorithm showed stable performance, demonstrating its good robustness. Additionally, by applying this algorithm to practical visual tasks such as object detection, face detection, and semantic segmentation, and comparing it with other state-of-the-art low-light image enhancement algorithms, we have demonstrated its practicality and advantages.

RESUMEN

Recent experiments report a charge density wave (CDW) in the antiferromagnet FeGe, but the nature of the charge ordering and the associated structural distortion remains elusive. We discuss the structural and electronic properties of FeGe. Our proposed ground state phase accurately captures atomic topographies acquired by scanning tunneling microscopy. We show that the 2 × 2 × 1 CDW likely results from the Fermi surface nesting of hexagonal-prism-shaped kagome states. FeGe is found to exhibit distortions in the positions of the Ge atoms instead of the Fe atoms in the kagome layers. Using in-depth first-principles calculations and analytical modeling, we demonstrate that this unconventional distortion is driven by the intertwining of magnetic exchange coupling and CDW interactions in this kagome material. The movement of Ge atoms from their pristine positions also enhances the magnetic moment of the Fe kagome layers. Our study indicates that magnetic kagome lattices provide a material candidate for exploring the effects of strong electronic correlations on the ground state and their implications for transport, magnetic, and optical responses in materials.

RESUMEN

Pairing Li-free transition-metal-based cathodes (MX) with Li-metal anodes is an emerging trend to overcome the energy-density limitation of current rechargeable Li-ion technology. However, the development of practical Li-free MX cathodes is plagued by the existing notion of low voltage due to the long-term overlooked voltage-tuning/phase-stability competition. Here, we propose a p-type alloying strategy involving three voltage/phase-evolution stages, of which each of the varying trends are quantitated by two improved ligand-field descriptors to balance the above contradiction. Following this, an intercalation-type 2H-V1.75Cr0.25S4 cathode tuned from layered MX2 family is successfully designed, which possesses an energy density of 554.3 Wh kg-1 at the electrode level accompanied by interfacial compatibility with sulfide solid-state electrolyte. The proposal of this class of materials is expected to break free from scarce or high-cost transition-metal (e.g. Co and Ni) reliance in current commercial cathodes. Our experiments further confirm the voltage and energy-density gains of 2H-V1.75Cr0.25S4. This strategy is not limited to specific Li-free cathodes and offers a solution to achieve high voltage and phase stability simultaneously.

RESUMEN

Crystal structure prediction has been a subject of topical interest but remains a substantial challenge especially for complex structures as it deals with the global minimization of the extremely rugged high-dimensional potential energy surface. In this paper, a symmetry-orientated divide-and-conquer scheme was proposed to construct a symmetry tree graph, where the entire search space is decomposed into a finite number of symmetry dependent subspaces. An artificial intelligence-based symmetry selection strategy was subsequently devised to select the low-lying subspaces with high symmetries for global exploration and in-depth exploitation. Our approach can significantly simplify the problem of crystal structure prediction by avoiding exploration of the most complex P1 subspace on the entire search space and has the advantage of preserving the crystal symmetry during structure evolution, making it well suitable for predicting the complex crystal structures. The effectiveness of the method has been validated by successful prediction of the candidate structures of binary Lennard-Jones mixtures and the high-pressure phase of ice, containing more than 100 atoms in the simulation cell. The work therefore opens up an opportunity toward achieving the long-sought goal of crystal structure prediction of complex systems.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Tenecteplase is a modified recombinant tissue-plasminogen activator, which is effective and safe in the treatment of acute ischemic stroke. However, the therapeutic dose of tenecteplase has been controversial. The purpose of this study is to systematically investigate the efficacy and safety of different doses of tenecteplase thrombolytic therapy for acute ischemic stroke. METHODS: Computer retrieval of English databases (PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library) and Chinese databases (CNKI, Wanfang, Viper, and Chinese Biomedical Database) is conducted for a randomized controlled clinical study on thrombolytic treatment of acute ischemic stroke with different doses of tenecteplase from the establishment of the database to October 2020. Two researchers independently conduct data extraction and literature quality evaluation on the quality of the included studies, and meta-analysis is conducted on the included literatures using RevMan5.3 software. OUTCOME: In this study, National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score, Modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score scale, symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage (SICH) incidence, All-cause mortality, and so on are used to evaluate the efficacy and safety of tenecteplase thrombolytic therapy in acute ischemic stroke with different doses. CONCLUSION: This study will provide reliable evidence-based evidence for the clinical application of different doses of tenecteplase in thrombolytic therapy for acute ischemic stroke. RESUMEN

In view of poor hydrothermal resistance of impregnation prepared catalysts (Cu5Ce5W9Ti-I), this paper aims to enhance thermal and hydrothermal resistance of Cu/Ce based catalysts for Hg0 oxidation via flame synthesis technology. The result found that the flame synthesis method could form nanoscale Cu10Ce10W9Ti-F particles with smaller lattice size (8-25 nm), more stable carrier structure and more oxygen vacancies. The inter-doping and inter-substitution of Ce, Cu and Ti oxides created more oxygen vacancies (Ce3+) and L-sites (O2-). Furthermore, the carrier TiO2 of Cu10Ce10W9Ti-F existed in form of highly thermostable rutile rather than anatase. High Hg0 oxidation efficiency (MOE) of 83.9-99.7% at 100-450 °C proved excellent oxidation activity of Cu10Ce10W9Ti-F catalyst. Moreover, the thermal and hydrothermal treatment (700 °C) only decreased MOE by less than 5% since L-sites kept fine thermostability of Cu10Ce10W9Ti-F. The flame synthesis was proven to be a promising catalyst preparation method to enhance thermal and hydrothermal resistance.

RESUMEN

The frequency shifts and lattice dynamics to unveil the vibrational properties of platinum diselenide (PtSe2) are investigated using pressure-dependent polarized Raman scattering at room temperature up to 25 GPa. The two phonon modes Eg and A1g display similar hardening trends; both the Raman peak positions and full widths at half-maximum have distinct mutation phenomena under high pressure. Especially, the split Eg mode at 4.3 GPa confirms the change of the lattice symmetry. With the aid of the first-principles calculations, a new pressure stabilization structure C2/m of PtSe2 has been found to be in good agreement with experiments. The band structures calculations reveal that the new phase is a novel type-I Dirac semimetal. The results demonstrate that the pressure-dependent Raman spectra combined with theoretical predictions may open a new window for searching and controlling the phase structure and Dirac cones of two-dimensional materials.

RESUMEN

The competition between SO2 and elemental mercury (Hg0) for active sites was an important factor for suppressing the Hg0 oxidation properties of catalysts. There were obvious differences in properties of basicity and acidity between SO2 and Hg0. Raising the SO2 resistance via adjusting the basicity and acidity sites of catalysts was promising for reducing the competition between SO2 and Hg0. This study aimed to form multiple active sites with different basicities via Cu, Fe, Mn, and Sn doping. The results indicated that Cu doping had the best modification performance. Five percent CuO doping could significantly improve the SO2 resistance of CuO(5)-CeO2(5)-WO3(9)/TiO2 and increase the mercury oxidation efficiency (MOE) from 54.7 to 85.5% in the condition (6% O2, 100 ppm NO, 100 ppm NH3, and 100 ppm SO2). CO2 temperature-programmed desorption analysis showed that CuO(5)-CeO2(5)-WO3(9)/TiO2 exhibited weak basic sites (CeO2), medium-strong basic sites (Cu-O-Ce), and strong basic sites (CuO). Therefore, the CuO in the Ce-O-Cu structure was prioritized for the reaction with acid gas SO2 and protected CeO2 from SO2 poisoning. This study prepared a highly SO2-resistant catalyst for Hg0 oxidation. This research and development will be conducive for use in Hg0 oxidation in actual coal-fired flue gases.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: China has achieved zero indigenous malaria case report in 2017. However, along with the increasing of international cooperation development, there is an increasing number of imported malaria cases from Chinese nationals returning from malaria-affected countries. Previous studies have focused on malaria endemic areas in China. There is thus limited information on non-endemic areas in China, especially on the performance of malaria surveillance and response in health facilities. METHODS: A comparative retrospective study was carried out based on routine malaria surveillance data collected from 2013 to 2017. All imported malaria cases reported within the mainland of China were included. Variables used in the comparative analysis between cases in former endemic and former non-endemic areas, included age, gender and occupation, destination of overseas travel, Plasmodium species and patient health outcome. Monthly aggregated data was used to compare seasonal and spatial characteristics. Geographical distribution and spatial-temporal aggregation analyses were conducted. Time to diagnosis and report, method of diagnosis, and level of reporting/diagnosing health facilities were used to assess performance of health facilities. RESULTS: A total of 16 733 malaria cases, out of which 90 were fatal, were recorded in 31 provinces. The majority of cases (96.2%) were reported from former malaria endemic areas while 3.8% were reported from former non-malaria endemic areas. Patients in the age class from 19 to 59 years and males made the highest proportion of cases in both areas. There were significant differences between occupational categories in the two areas (P <  0.001). In former endemic areas, the largest proportion of cases was among outdoor workers (80%). Two peaks (June, January) and three peaks (June, September and January) were found in former endemic and former non-endemic areas, respectively. Time between the onset of symptoms and diagnosis at clinics was significantly different between the two areas at different level of health facilities (P <  0.05). CONCLUSIONS: All the former non-endemic areas are now reporting imported malaria cases. However, the largest proportion of imported cases is still reported from former endemic areas. Health facilities in former endemic areas outperformed those in former non-endemic areas. Information, treatment, and surveillance must be provided for expatriates while capacity building and continuous training must be implemented at health facilities in China.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the correlation between the behavioral performance and the expressions of substance P (SP) and neurokinin-1 receptor (NK-1R) in the posterior horn of the L5-S2 spinal cord in rats with chronic prostatitis (CP). METHODS: A CP model was made in 30 adult male SD rats by intraperitoneal injection of 0.5 ml dyphtheria pertussis tetanus (DPT) vaccine and mixed solution of 1 ml prostatein extract and complete adjuvant in a 1∶1 ratio, and another 10 rats were injected with the same volume of normal saline as controls. At 45 (n = 10), 60 (n = 10) and 90 days (n = 10) after modeling, the behavioral changes of the rats were observed by open-field and sucrose consumption tests, the prostatic indexes and levels of serum TNF-α, IL-1ß, IL-2 and IL-10 were obtained, and the expressions of SP and NK1-R in the L5-S2 spinal cord were determined by immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: Compared with the controls, the CP model rats showed obviously decreased horizontal and vertical movement scores and sucrose consumption, particularly in the 90 d group (P < 0.05), significantly reduced prostatic indexes in the 45 d, 60 d and 90 d groups (all P < 0.05), even lower in the 90 d than in the 45 d and 60 d groups (P < 0.05). Edema and lymphocytes were increased in the prostatic tissue with the prolonged time of modeling. The levels of serum TNF-α, IL-1ß, IL-2 and IL-10 were markedly elevated in all the CP rats as compared with those in the controls (P < 0.05), and so were the expressions of SP and NK-1R in the L5-S2 spinal cord (P < 0.05), even more significantly in the 90 d than in the 45 d and 60 d groups (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Rats with chronic prostatitis are characterized by behavioral manifestation of depression, increased levels of serum TNF-α, IL-1ß, IL-2 and IL-10, and a time-dependent upregulation of the expressions of SP and NK-1R in the posterior horn of the L5-S2 spinal cord, which suggests a correlation between the behavioral performance and the expressions of SP and NK-1R in the L5-S2 spinal cord of the rats.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVERecurrent aneurysms after coil embolization remain a challenging issue. The goal of the present study was to report the authors' experience with recurrent aneurysms after coil embolization and to discuss the radiographic classification scheme and recommended management strategy.METHODSAneurysm treatments from a single institution over a 6-year period were retrospectively reviewed. Ninety-seven aneurysms that recurred after initial coiling were managed during the study period. Recurrent aneurysms were classified into the following 5 types based on their angiographic characteristics: I, pure recanalization inside the aneurysm sac; II, pure coil compaction without aneurysm growth; III, new aneurysm neck formed without coil compaction; IV, new aneurysm neck formed with coil compaction; and V, newly formed aneurysm neck and sac.RESULTSAneurysm recurrences resulted in rehemorrhages in 6 cases (6.2%) of type III-V aneurysms, but in none of type I-II aneurysms. There was a significantly higher proportion of ophthalmic artery aneurysms and complex internal carotid artery aneurysms presenting as types I and II than presented as the other 3 types (63.3% vs 16.4%, p < 0.001). In contrast, for posterior communicating artery aneurysms and anterior communicating artery aneurysms, a higher proportion of type III-V aneurysms was observed than for the other 2 types, but without a significant difference in the multivariate model (56.7% vs 23.3%). In addition, giant (> 25 mm) aneurysms were more common among type I and II lesions than among type III and IV aneurysms (36.7% vs 9.0%, p = 0.001), which exhibited a higher proportion of small (< 10 mm) lesions (65.7% vs 13.3%, p < 0.001). A single reembolization procedure was sufficient to occlude 80.0% of type I recurrences and 83.3% of type II recurrences from coil compaction but only 65.6% of type III-V recurrences from aneurysm regrowth.CONCLUSIONSAneurysm size and location represent the determining factors of the angiographic recurrence types. Type I and II recurrences were safely treated by reembolization, whereas type III-V recurrences may be best managed surgically when technically feasible.

RESUMEN

In-situ high-pressure synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction studies up to 21 GPa of CVD-grown silicon 2D-nanosheets establish that the structural phase transitions depend on size and shape. For sizes between 9.3(7) nm and 15.2(8) nm we observe an irreversible phase transition sequence from I (cubic) → II (tetragonal) → V (hexagonal) during pressure increase and during decompression below 8 GPa the emergence of an X-ray amorphous phase. High-angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) images of this X-ray amorphous phase reveal the formation of significant numbers of 1D nanowires with aspect ratios > 10, which are twinned and grow along the <111> direction. We discovered a reduction of dimensionality under pressure from a 2D morphology to a 1D wire in a material with a diamond structure. MD simulations indicate the reduction of thermal conductivity in such nanowires.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Tengchong County was one of the counties located at the China-Myanmar border with high malaria incidence in the previous decades. As the pilot county for malaria elimination at the border area, Tengchong County is aiming to be the first county to achieve malaria elimination goal. A cross-sectional entomological survey was carried out to evaluate the feasibility of elimination approach and assess the receptivity of malaria reintroduction. METHODS: Light traps associated with live baits were used to investigate the abundance of adult mosquitoes in nine villages in Tengchong County. Light traps were set to collect adult mosquitoes in both human houses and cowsheds from dusk till dawn in each site. RESULTS: A total of 4948 adult Anopheles mosquitoes were collected from May to December in two villages. Of the mosquitoes were captured, 24.2% were in human houses and 75.8% in cowsheds. The peak of abundance occurred in July for An. sinensis and in September-October for An. minimus (s.l.) Ten Anopheles species were collected, the most prevalent being An. sinensis (50.3%), An. peditaeniatus (31.6%) and An. minimus (s.l.) (15.8%), contributing to 97.6% of the sample. Potential breeding sites were also investigated and a total of 407 larvae were collected, with An. sinensis (50.1%) and An. minimus (s.l.) (46.2%) as predominant species. Ponds and rice fields were the two preferred breeding sites for Anopheles mosquitoes; however, the difference between the number of adults and larvae captured suggest other breeding sites might exist. Both An. sinensis and An. minimus (s.l.) were found zoophilic with human blood index as 0.21 and 0.26, respectively. No Plasmodium positive Anopheles specimens were found by PCR among 4,000 trapped mosquitoes. CONCLUSIONS: Although no indigenous malaria cases have been reported in Tengchong County since 2013, there is still a risk from the presence of vectors in the context of human population movements from neighboring malaria endemic areas. The presence of An. sinensis, associated to rice fields, is particularly worrying. Sustained entomological surveillance is strongly suggested even after malaria elimination certification.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The China-Myanmar border region presents a great challenge in malaria elimination in China, and it is essential to understand the relationship between malaria vulnerability and population mobility in this region. METHODS: A community-based, cross-sectional survey was performed in five villages of Yingjiang county during September 2016. Finger-prick blood samples were obtained to identify asymptomatic infections, and imported cases were identified in each village (between January 2013 and September 2016). A stochastic simulation model (SSM) was used to test the relationship between population mobility and malaria vulnerability, according to the mechanisms of malaria importation. RESULTS: Thirty-two imported cases were identified in the five villages, with a 4-year average of 1 case/year (range: 0-5 cases/year). No parasites were detected in the 353 blood samples from 2016. The median density of malaria vulnerability was 0.012 (range: 0.000-0.033). The average proportion of mobile members of the study population was 32.56% (range: 28.38-71.95%). Most mobile individuals lived indoors at night with mosquito protection. The SSM model fit the investigated data (χ2 = 0.487, P = 0.485). The average probability of infection in the members of the population that moved to Myanmar was 0.011 (range: 0.0048-0.1585). The values for simulated vulnerability increased with greater population mobility in each village. CONCLUSIONS: A high proportion of population mobility was associated with greater malaria vulnerability in the China-Myanmar border region. Mobile population-specific measures should be used to decrease the risk of malaria re-establishment in China.

RESUMEN

Elemental sulfur (S0) is always produced during bio-denitrification and desulfurization process, but the S0 yield and purification quality are too low. Till now, no feasible approach has been carried out to efficiently recover S0. In this study, we report the S0 generation and recovery by a newly designed, compact, biofilm formed membrane filtration reactor (BfMFR), where S0 was generated within a Thauera sp. strain HDD-formed biofilm on membrane surface, and then timely separated from the biofilm through membrane filtration. The high S0 generation efficiency (98% in average) was stably maintained under the operation conditions with the influent acetate, nitrate and sulfide concentration of 115, 120 and 100 mg/L, respectively, an initial inoculum volume of approximate 2.4 × 108 cells, and a membrane pore size of 0.45 µm. Under this condition, the sulfide loading approached 62.5 kg/m3·d, one of the highest compared with the previous reports, demonstrating an efficient sulfide removal and S0 generation capacity. Particular important, a solid analysis of the effluent revealed that the recovered S0 was adulterated with barely microorganisms, extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs), or inorganic chemicals, indicating a fairly high S0 recovery purity. Membrane biofilm analysis revealed that 80.7% of the generated S0 was accomplished within 45-80 µm of biofilm from the membrane surface and while, the complete membrane fouling due to bacteria and EPSs was generally observed after 14-16 days. The in situ generation and timely separation of S0 from the bacterial group by BfMFR, effectively avoids the sulfur circulation (S2- to S0, S0 to SO42-, SO42- to HS-) and guarantees the high S0 recovery efficiency and purity, is considered as a feasible approach for S0 recovery from sulfide- and nitrate-contaminated wastewater.

RESUMEN

Titanium dioxide has been widely used as an efficient transition metal oxide photocatalyst. However, its photocatalytic activity is limited to the ultraviolet spectrum range due to the large bandgap beyond 3 eV. Efforts to reduce the bandgap to achieve a broader spectrum range of light absorption have been successfully attempted via the experimental synthesis of dopant-free metastable surface structures of rutile-type TiO2 (011) 2 × 1. This new surface phase possesses a reduced bandgap of ∼2.1 eV, showing great potential for an excellent photocatalyst covering a wide range of visible light. There is a need to establish the atomistic structure of this metastable surface to understand the physical cause for the bandgap reduction and to improve the future design of photocatalysts. Here, we report computational investigations in an effort to unravel this surface structure via swarm structure-searching simulations. The established structure adopts the anatase (101)-like structure model, where the topmost 2-fold O atoms form a quasi-hexagonal surface pattern and bond with the unsaturated 5-fold and 4-fold Ti atoms in the next layer. The predicted anatase (101)-like surface model can naturally explain the experimental observation of the STM images, the electronic bandgap, and the oxidation state of Ti4+. Dangling bonds on the anatase (101)-like surface are abundant making it a superior photocatalyst. First-principles molecular dynamics simulations have supported the high photocatalytic activity by showing that water and formic acid molecules dissociate spontaneously on the anatase (101)-like surface.
