The parameters of ABC, blood gases, content of nonorganic phosphorus, 2,3 DPG and ATP in erythrocytes were studied in 161 patients with diffuse peritonitis during the early postoperative period. Considerable alterations of the oxygen transport function of blood in these patients were found. The use of Obzidan and monosubstituted potassium phosphate prevents a decrease of nonorganic phosphorus, 2,3 DPG and ATP in erythrocytes, improves the oxygen supply of the organism. The time of treatment is shorter.

Under study was the functional state of erythrocytes and hemoglobin in 57 patients with cancer of the cardia during the combined therapy, including preoperative gamma-radiation and surgery. The following tests were employed: the total hemoglobin content (Hb), the number of erythrocytes, hematocrit (Ht), average content and concentration of Hb in an erythrocyte, the level of fetal Hb, acid erythrograms, the reaction of transhemination, catalase and peroxidase activity, the erythrocyte volume. It was found that the patients examined developed anemia, associated with the reduced acid resistance of erythrocytes and a delayed rate of oxygen delivery to the tissues. Preoperative telegamma therapy renders preoperatively (the initial 24--48 hours) no appreciable effect on the condition of erythrocytes and Hb function. Postoperatively, greater shifts were noted in patients subjected to radiation therapy. There is an increased content of Hb, Ht, fetal Hb, average content and concentration of Hb in erythrocytes, an enhanced reaction of transhemination.

Under study was the status of microcirculation in surgical and combination treatment (with radiotherapy) in patients with cancer of the esophagus and gastric cardia. The method of isotope semiresorption from the muscle depot (64) of patients and the arterio-venous difference for water after the technic of V. P, Kaznacheev and A. A. Dzizinski (26 patients) were employed. The state of microcirculation was found to be dependent on the degree of emaciation, preoperative telegamma therapy and the postoperative complications. The mostly impaired microcirculation was noted in emaciated patients with developing complication who were subjected to radiotherapy.

Forty patients with tumors of the esophagus, cardia and rectum, subjected preoperatively to gamma-therapy (500 rad for 6 days) and 24 patients subjected only to the operation (the control group) were examined for the heart rate, arterial pressure, minute and stroke heart volumes and circulatory volume (AFS--J131) before and after irradiation and 1, 3, 5 days following the operation. Gamma-therapy was found to result in more poor hemodynamic indices whether the heart is irradiated or not. In irradiation of the heart region (cancer of the esophagus and cardia) much poorer hemodynamic indices were noted.

Under study were the indices of the acid-base condition of blood in 49 patients with rectal cancer at different stages of the combined therapy (intensive telegamma therapy and surgery). The control group comprised 47 analogous patients subjected to surgical therapy solely. A mixed respiratory-metablic acidosis with signs of tissue hypoxia was noted prior to the treatment. Following irradiation and during the operative procedure these changes would aggravate. In irradiated patients these disorders are manifest to a greater extent and age dependent on the duration of the operative procedure, blood losses and the amount of transfused donor blood. If there are no complications, then such disorders resume their initial level or are normalized to the 1st-3d day postoperatively. To correct metabolic acidosis in the irradiated patients more intesive medication measures would be required.

It is found that in irradiated patients subjected to abdomino-perineal extirpation of the rectum, a decrease of arterial pressure, blood volume, minute heart volume is more pronounced than in control patients.
